- 0:01Want to know the most important thing?
- 0:04There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:08Chad #1180 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:12yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:15you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:16And this message is dedicated to Maddie Smith on her birthday.
- 0:20Happy birthday Maddie, here's the upgrade.
- 0:23You can live under the tyranny of the urgent, but upgraded the
- 0:26king makes the most important thing king.
- 0:30Here's the story. At PayPal, Peter Thiel gave
- 0:35every employee exactly 1 responsibility.
- 0:39Not a roll with three or four pillars.
- 0:41One thing, and he made a rule to go with it.
- 0:44If you walked into his office to talk about anything other than
- 0:46your one assigned priority, he wouldn't have the conversation.
- 0:50Even the annual review forms asked for one line, the single
- 0:54most valuable thing you contributed.
- 0:57Keith Raboy lived under that system and resented it at the
- 1:00time. Years later, he explained why it
- 1:03worked, and his explanation is the part worth keeping.
- 1:06Picture yourself writing today's To Do List.
- 1:08At the top is the problem that would actually change
- 1:11everything. But you don't know how to solve
- 1:13it. So you drift down to problem 2.
- 1:17When you do know how to solve, and you solve it, you cross it
- 1:20off. You feel productive.
- 1:23Now multiply that by an entire company.
- 1:26If everyone is quietly trading their hardest problem for their
- 1:29third hardest, the whole organization stays busy and the
- 1:33one problem that matter never gets touched.
- 1:37Not because anyone was lazy, because everyone was busy.
- 1:41There's a term for this productive avoidance.
- 1:45Teal found a second benefit he didn't expect. 1 clear
- 1:48responsibility per person meant nobody competed over the same
- 1:52turf, and less competition meant less conflict.
- 1:55His own metaphor was internal conflict.
- 1:57As a company's autoimmune disease, the stated cause of a
- 2:01death is always something external, a rival, a bad
- 2:05quarter. But what actually kills it is
- 2:08the fighting nobody outside ever saw.
- 2:11PayPal was constantly on the brink of failing.
- 2:14It had no margin for anyone to do work on the fourth most
- 2:17important thing. And neither do you.
- 2:20The better story to tell yourself is I know what my most
- 2:24important thing is, and that's the most important thing I'm
- 2:26working on. Not the one you've already
- 2:29mastered. Not the one that's easiest to
- 2:31cross off today. The most important thing is to
- 2:34make the most important thing the most important thing.
- 2:37That's the most important thing. Tell me a story of pinpointing
- 2:42and focusing on the most important thing to from
