- 0:03Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed to kick start
- 0:06your day in a positive way. I'm your host Andrew McGivern
- 0:10for August 28th. Today is National Burger Day,
- 0:14celebrating America's most iconic sandwich.
- 0:17The hamburger's origin story is delightfully messy, with
- 0:20multiple people claiming to have invented it.
- 0:23Louis Larson is often credited by the Library of Congress for
- 0:27creating the first hamburger in 1900 at his New Haven restaurant
- 0:32when he slapped a Hamburg steak between two pieces of bread for
- 0:36a customer in a hurry. But Charlie Negrine, known as
- 0:39Hamburger Charlie, claimed he invented it in 1885 at a
- 0:43Wisconsin country fair by flattening a meatball between
- 0:47bread so fair goers could eat while walking around.
- 0:51The truth is, the hamburger likely evolved from several
- 0:55practical innovations by different people solving the
- 0:58same problem, how to make meat portable and easy to eat.
- 1:05What started as a simple solution became a global
- 1:08phenomenon representing American ingenuity, convenience, and the
- 1:14beautiful simplicity of a great idea executed well.
- 1:18Which brings us to today's quote from the prolific inventor
- 1:23Thomas Edison, who once said there's a way to do it better.
- 1:32Find it. Edison's philosophy captures
- 1:36perfectly what makes the hamburger such a brilliant
- 1:39invention. Multiple people looked at
- 1:42existing food, meat, bread, the challenge of eating on the go
- 1:48and thought, there's got to be a better way to do this.
- 1:52Whether it was Louis Larson serving his busy workers who
- 1:56needed to eat quickly or Charlie Negreen helping fair goers enjoy
- 2:01their meal while walking around, each inventor saw an everyday
- 2:05problem and refused to accept it and believed that it could be
- 2:10improved. They weren't trying to create a
- 2:14culinary revolution, they were just looking for a better way.
- 2:18That's the beauty of innovation That often starts with someone
- 2:21noticing inefficiency in ordinary situations and asking,
- 2:25why does it have to be this way? The hamburger succeeded because
- 2:29it solved multiple problems at once.
- 2:32It was portable, customizable, affordable, and delicious.
- 2:38Edison understood that improvement isn't just about
- 2:41grand gestures or perfect solutions.
- 2:44It's about persistent curiosity and a willingness to experiment
- 2:48until you find something that works better than what existed
- 2:52before. This makes me think about my own
- 2:56relationship with burgers and how they represent this constant
- 2:59quest for better. I started with basic fast food
- 3:03burgers as a kid, then discovered gourmet burgers with
- 3:06artisanal buns and fancy toppings, and now my favorite
- 3:11burger is the one made on my own barbecue.
- 3:14And my best ever homemade burger is the infamous Titanic burger.
- 3:21It is so tasty with all the fixings, and just like the
- 3:26Titanic, it is huge and it always goes down on its maiden
- 3:31voyage. So today, in honor of National
- 3:35Burger Day, consider where you might apply Edison's philosophy
- 3:39in your own life. What everyday challenges are you
- 3:43accepting as unchangeable when there might be a better way
- 3:48waiting to be discovered? Remember that the best
- 3:52innovations often come from improving ordinary things rather
- 3:55than inventing entirely new ones.
- 3:58Sometimes the most revolutionary idea is simply doing something
- 4:01familiar, just a little bit better.
- 4:06That's going to do it for today. May you always seek better ways
- 4:10and never stop improving the ordinary.
- 4:14I'm Adam McGivern, signing off for now but I'll be back
- 4:19tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod
- 4:24stationed with another daily quote.
