- 0:33Hamster with a blunt pen knife for doing quicker.
- 0:36Quicker. Welcome back to Hamster with a
- 0:38Blunt Pen Knife, the Doctor Who Commentary Podcast.
- 0:41I'm Martin Parsons, a wobbly alien who's been turned into a
- 0:44humanoid for the length of this call.
- 0:45And with me is Mr. Joe Ford, everybody's favorite camp
- 0:49director. Joe, how are you?
- 0:51Well, not entirely transformed into a human being when I'll
- 0:54say, I can still say a little bit of a sort of wobbly around
- 0:58your head. Yeah, sort of aupertune coming
- 1:01out of your head. I did my best.
- 1:04The booth's just behind you there, if you.
- 1:06Want to just go for it one more time?
- 1:09Oh, there we go. How beautiful you look.
- 1:11Now you know, where did you find this body print?
- 1:14Martin Parsons Just. Like a random bald man and this
- 1:18came out. Oh, really?
- 1:20Happy with it. I thought, you know, it was like
- 1:22a a Zygon body print. You know that they had going
- 1:24spare. You've got a job, lot.
- 1:28Took one of those leftover porn stars from the BBV films.
- 1:32Oh no, there's only one. And there's Joe Castleton every
- 1:35time. I'd love to be able to turn into
- 1:38Joe Castleton. That would be.
- 1:39Brilliant. I've seen more of her tits and
- 1:42Fanny than any woman I know. Do you know?
- 1:45Because I don't watch porn so the only porn I've ever seen is
- 1:48Zygon. It's really difficult to watch
- 1:51the autumn films again when you're like, Oh yeah, there you
- 1:55are. I've seen a lot of you and And
- 1:58the same for the Is it Devil of Winter?
- 2:00But what's got the guy who's in Zygon?
- 2:03Oh yeah, he's. To see him and you're like, Oh
- 2:06yeah, seen all of. You well bollock as well with
- 2:09that too, you know. Well, we went and saw Joe
- 2:12Carlson in a fabulous play. She was in a play with John
- 2:15Dorney. It was a French farce.
- 2:16When they were coming in and out of doors, she was playing their
- 2:18old maid, and she was wonderful in it that.
- 2:20Sounds incredible. Yeah.
- 2:22What was it called? It was like it.
- 2:24He was basically like a guy who had all of these different
- 2:28girlfriends and they all turned up at his house at once and they
- 2:31were coming in and out of doors and the maid was basically the
- 2:34one that was trying to hide them all.
- 2:36It was very funny. But oh, Boeing, Boeing, I think
- 2:40that's what it was called. Oh, no, Boeing, Boeing.
- 2:42That's it. That was the joke.
- 2:44Sorry, but Joe Castle was in the bar afterwards and me and Mark
- 2:49were like, Oh my God, there's Joe Castle.
- 2:52I can't go up to her. I've seen her Fanny.
- 2:55I can't go up to her and say Oh my God your tits look even more
- 2:59amazing in real life. There's those interviews they do
- 3:03in the making of where she's like, yeah, I really hope this
- 3:06film wouldn't get released. And here we are.
- 3:10It's it's out. Hey Martin, what all this has to
- 3:13do with Delta and the bannermen, I've no idea.
- 3:16No. Oh, although I do have to say
- 3:20there has been an update. The moon of Delta Magna.
- 3:23Now, in a moment of spectacular lunacy, the Time Lords decided
- 3:29to play pool with planets, and Delta Magna has been renamed.
- 3:34Ravalox, the doctor, the doctors doctor and Perry are walking all
- 3:40over. Her all over Delta?
- 3:41Yeah, exactly. Gosh.
- 3:43She's got Tom Chapman inside her.
- 3:46Oh. No, she's got Glenn Murphy on
- 3:49top of her. Oh boy, Lucky Mayor.
- 3:53She's got to put up with Tony Selby as well.
- 3:54But there we go. And Joan Sims is going to weigh
- 3:58her down a little bit. Tony Selby's trying to sneak in
- 4:03and steal their treasures. Oh God.
- 4:05Can we drag every Doctor Who story into this great narrative?
- 4:09Honestly, this is just getting better and better.
- 4:12Just this is this. Is wonderful, yeah.
- 4:14And of course it all comes back to Mel again, doesn't it?
- 4:17When she realises in the courtroom, you know, oh, how
- 4:20utterly evil. Playing pool with planets, My
- 4:24God. And then typical Steven Moffitt
- 4:26fashion, it's very time behind me because she hasn't even met
- 4:29Delta yet. No, that.
- 4:31And that honestly does. If that were a Stephen Moffatt
- 4:34story, just like, oh, that person we met who's the planet
- 4:37we were on. Surprise you?
- 4:41Oh, yeah, Probably. Yeah.
- 4:42Has there been a line in this where she went?
- 4:44You remind me of this moon I saw once, you know?
- 4:47I mean, I wouldn't take that as a compliment, would you?
- 4:50Have you, have you ever, did you, have you watched Twin
- 4:52Peaks? You know, I do have a bit of
- 4:56trouble with Twin Peaks. I think it's all right for the
- 4:58first season and six episodes. They tie up the mystery.
- 5:03I'm a bit balls. Then this isn't so much for you,
- 5:06but it's just the bit. You get a character that ends up
- 5:08turning into a doorknob, and later on, and later on someone's
- 5:12just like, oh, that doorknob looks like Josie.
- 5:15It's like this. It would be a line, just our
- 5:18Twin Peaks line would be. Oh my God.
- 5:20Yeah. Moon, you know.
- 5:24Well, let's see where we end in Part 3 with this great
- 5:27narrative. All right, the adventures of
- 5:30Delta, the moon in the Time Lord plot.
- 5:35To be continued, of course. No, I was like, yeah, I was
- 5:42like, who's doing? Who's doing what?
- 5:43No, I think I had to pause for a second because I was something
- 5:45like, oh God, fly me to the moon.
- 5:47That's where we end up. Yes, Delta ends up in the
- 5:54Comedia Theatre in Brighton with Sylvester McCoy playing the sex
- 5:59therapist. She's.
- 6:01Like, don't I know you? With my wife and girl, we're so
- 6:07obscure now, people haven't got a fucking clue what we're
- 6:09talking about. Did you used to be a planet?
- 6:14I say what a delicious moon. Oh God, You know the thing I
- 6:21like about Delton the Bannerman is, is Keith Mcculloch's score.
- 6:26It's a, it's a, it's a great score.
- 6:28I mean, the use of the music in general is, and again, it's like
- 6:32we haven't had this sort of, well, we'll get that right at
- 6:37the end with the sort of original song, but even with the
- 6:39use of the 50s songs and stuff, it's great.
- 6:41Just hearing Mr. Sandman in in the store, it's, it's wonderful.
- 6:46But we haven't had that sort of music underscoring since
- 6:52Gunfighters. I was trying to think if we've
- 6:54had it at all. Have we had music particularly?
- 6:56There was a song in Oh no Remembrance is still to come.
- 7:00Remember, it's still to come in the.
- 7:01Cafe There is a song in there, isn't there?
- 7:02I'm like, don't I think you're right.
- 7:05Yeah, I think you could be right.
- 7:06I think there's a song. There's a song in the Cafe and
- 7:08Evil of the Daleks, but it's not really to do with the story, is
- 7:11it? Depending on where the copyright
- 7:13is. Depending on what I'm saying
- 7:14with the remembrance of the Taleks.
- 7:16That's right. Yeah.
- 7:18But oh, I mean, all of that Dick Parton stuff doing la, la, la.
- 7:22It's great. It's.
- 7:25Great. It's and again, it just adds to
- 7:27that. You don't have to know that it's
- 7:30the Dick, but like, you know, you're sort of, it doesn't
- 7:32really matter. It's just if you don't, if you
- 7:33know, it's sort of a funny little wink.
- 7:35If you don't, it's a it's an energetic bit of music and I
- 7:39think it just works for everybody.
- 7:41And you've also got, hang on, it's a lollipop in there as
- 7:43well. Lollipop I.
- 7:44Think it is. I think it's all the cordette
- 7:46stuff is in there. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:48Sublime. Well, look, should we go and
- 7:50enjoy this musical? And see?
- 7:52I mean, we've managed to talk 10 minutes about BBV and all other
- 7:56things, but I suppose we should eventually watch Delta and
- 7:58Development at some point. Yeah, well, you know, why defer
- 8:02your pleasures? Let's dive in head first before
- 8:07Delta becomes a bloody moon. Right.
- 8:10Are you going to? Oh, it's me, isn't it?
- 8:12Yeah, sorry. Yes.
- 8:13How would you like me to count this in?
- 8:16Oh God. Character.
- 8:18Any character. I was going to say, Ray, is that
- 8:20is that inappropriate? Oh no.
- 8:23In 321 Iron Eyes, stars explode. They explained so beautifully,
- 8:35don't they? No.
- 8:36These lovely power graphics. Look at them.
- 8:38Well, this is something, I mean, the graphics, I mean, I know
- 8:41that they're obviously dated and whatever, but I've never quite
- 8:44understood why we had like, you know, model shot of the TARDIS.
- 8:48Why can't we use this computer rendering of the TARDIS?
- 8:52Because that doesn't look any worse than.
- 8:54I mean, you know, it's better than Babylon 5 graphics like.
- 8:57I well indeed. But I would have that between
- 9:01every scene, I'd have that CGI TARDIS flying across because it
- 9:04looks kind of cool. I just it feels weird that they
- 9:06have all these elements, they don't use them.
- 9:08They use it in time of the role and you don't know at the start
- 9:11it's sort. Of In the Rainbow, Yeah, yeah,
- 9:13yeah, that's yeah. But that is that the only time
- 9:15they use the CGI TARDIS? Well, I think.
- 9:17What are those rocks that are sort of flying about the place
- 9:20in the title sequence? Oh, my God.
- 9:24It's Delta's moon. She's exploded and she's all
- 9:28over the title sequence. Oh, man.
- 9:32No, no, don't you worry. There'll be more.
- 9:34OK. But yeah.
- 9:35She can't end like that. No, the last of the shimmering
- 9:39has exploded. What the explosion is.
- 9:43Oh God. Now, do you know in Malcolm
- 9:45Cole's novelisation, there was a misspelling and instead of the
- 9:50doctor peering over that shelf, he ended up peeing over that
- 9:54shelf? Did you know that?
- 9:57No, I have. I remember having heard that as
- 9:59a misspelling. I didn't realise it was from
- 10:00there, so that's probably. Something I'd recommend you know
- 10:03when someone's trying to murder you round.
- 10:05A But when the guy explodes, that's how he has to put the
- 10:07fire out. It's like, daughter, what are
- 10:09you doing? You're pissing all over his blue
- 10:13suede shoes, you know. I'm having a piss 3.
- 10:18Hold, hold. The thought of the rest of McCoy
- 10:21grabbing, grabbing his little 7th Doctor.
- 10:25There's not enough puppets in Doctor Who, is there?
- 10:27No, I like a good puppet, although it's actually Dragon
- 10:30Fire's got puppets too, hasn't it in the in the cantina?
- 10:35Oh, of course it does. It goes first.
- 10:37McCoy does. Now, did you see the state of
- 10:42that shimmer and puppet when it was auctioned off about 10 years
- 10:45ago? Oh.
- 10:46No it didn't. It had decayed if it looks like
- 10:49a green bogey now, and now it looks like a mouldy green bogey.
- 10:52So when people buy these things because they sort of rot, don't
- 10:55they, because they're just rubber, it's like.
- 10:57The brain as well. Someone bought the brain and it
- 10:59was literally like it was sort of poo brown.
- 11:03It was horrible. Now what would you do if you
- 11:07sort of going on a date like that, taking your flowers in?
- 11:10She was cradling what beautiful baby.
- 11:13Oh, I'm all right. Thanks.
- 11:15I'm going to go get the. I'm going to go and see if
- 11:17Rachel's somewhere out there. You didn't put with child on
- 11:20your profile. With really manky child, he's
- 11:24like, would you like some roses? Would you like to eat them?
- 11:27I don't know. The fades of the morning,
- 11:30though, again, it's just something we don't do.
- 11:32Doctor Who? You know.
- 11:34And it's so it's, it's, it's they're thinking of new ways of
- 11:37telling stories. Yeah, and I think the the McCoy
- 11:39era, they do that thing, don't they?
- 11:40Just like people go into bed and ace getting up and being like in
- 11:43a pyjamas and stuff like that. That's really nice.
- 11:47Yeah, in the novelisation of Remembrance of the Dalek, she
- 11:50makes sure that her covers are down a little bit so we can have
- 11:52a good look what kids were reading in the 80s.
- 11:57I haven't read. I was thinking, I've not read
- 11:58the novelization of this. I don't think I've read the
- 12:01novelization of Remembrance. Actually, that's a banger.
- 12:04This one is more sort of script page, but the script is such a
- 12:08delight, why wouldn't you want to read it on the page?
- 12:11No, we've not talked about Malcolm Colt.
- 12:13So he, I, I've only seen one other thing he's done, which is
- 12:19a African horror film called The Bone Snatcher, and he produced
- 12:25and wrote it. Bone Snatcher.
- 12:28It's not great. It's basically the plot is like,
- 12:31there are these scientists out in the desert in Namibia, I
- 12:33think, and they basically are getting attacked by something.
- 12:36And the thing they're getting attacked by is like a colony of
- 12:39ants that kill you to take your bones and kind of like create
- 12:43themselves a sort of skeleton to move around.
- 12:47And I think that sounds scary. Yeah, it's, it's sort of OK.
- 12:51It's like the kind of thing you'd watch like, you know,
- 12:53beyond at like midnight on Channel 5 and you'd be like,
- 12:56yeah, it's all right. It's.
- 12:57Not in Africa, yeah. Yeah, yeah, it's.
- 12:59Filmed in Africa. And filmed in Africa.
- 13:01Yeah, Wow. Is there an eccentric Welsh
- 13:03beekeeper that turns up? Thank them all.
- 13:05Unfortunately not. That's kind of that's kind of
- 13:08exact. It's exactly what you need.
- 13:09But there is that thing. But there is a queen sort of
- 13:12amped thing at the end that kind of gets away and.
- 13:15Say Queen of the bees, queen of the ants.
- 13:18Queen of the Bees. But I get the impression that
- 13:20he's like more into producing and I think he was trying to
- 13:23kind of build up sort of South African film board and stuff.
- 13:28And so maybe that just took him away because I kind of feel like
- 13:31this shows so much invention. Why did we not get more from
- 13:36him? Why have we not had a big finish
- 13:37from him? I mean, I could literally, I
- 13:40think anyone could write an entire story for each one of
- 13:43these guest characters. Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 13:46Yeah, We haven't really talked about Gurunwi.
- 13:48I love, I love Gurunwi. He's my honey honey bee.
- 13:53He's such a sweet guy, just hanging around with his bees.
- 13:57Oh, no, he's just going to warn them and then they are off on
- 13:59their bike. Good God, Ray, wake up, will
- 14:02you? Come on now.
- 14:03Oh. My head you will say your name
- 14:09she's she's. What's happened to Doctor Hula?
- 14:13He's waking up with a woman in all the washing.
- 14:19You know Kate Allman, right? When I interviewed her, she said
- 14:22to her, but she fancied Sylvester McCoy.
- 14:24I mean, somebody had to, I guess, other than his wife.
- 14:29Because. Because Kate Orman said that she
- 14:31didn't. When we did our image of the
- 14:33Fender, she was like, oh, I'd never considered that there was
- 14:35any hanky panky at Fetch Priory. And I was like, Kate, come on.
- 14:39Yeah, Come on, Kate, what were you watching?
- 14:41You wrote the New Adventures, all right.
- 14:43You consider the hanky panky a lot.
- 14:46I think she did to Sylvester McCoy in those books.
- 14:49She must be a pseudo masochist if that's what she does to
- 14:52people. She says, oh, this man's very
- 14:54charming, isn't he? Oh, is that the announcements?
- 14:57Yeah, this is great. But this is a song.
- 14:59Great. But even this, it's like, OK, so
- 15:02but we're paying a character to come in and just do like this
- 15:05one. So paying an actor's coming to
- 15:07do this one scene. Like who's who's budgeting this?
- 15:10Is it the same fellow who's like obsessed with Mr. Burton, like,
- 15:13And he goes, oh, I'm going to stay.
- 15:15Is it him? Oh, he's like, I don't want to
- 15:17go off to Andre Dodd Wells. Yeah, I think that might be.
- 15:19Thank you, Vinny, but you will all have to go.
- 15:23Burton is so. Great.
- 15:25Burton's wonderful. You haven't talked about Burton
- 15:27really did. You ever see the Foot in the
- 15:29Grave episode that that actor was in?
- 15:31I must have. Seen it.
- 15:33It's the one where Margaret and Victor decide to go to the pub
- 15:37and they have to pretend that they don't know each other due
- 15:41to various misunderstandings. So Margaret knows the wife and
- 15:45he knows the husband, but they don't know the other two are
- 15:49married and him. Burton, the actor, is going, oh,
- 15:54apparently her wife is absolutely ghastly.
- 15:58Oh, it's so funny. And then they have to drive
- 16:01Victor home and Margaret doesn't get out because they're
- 16:03pretending that they don't know each other.
- 16:06Oh, it's blissful. I'm going to go watch this now.
- 16:09I think it's season 3 episode 1. What's OK, What's a bit sad of
- 16:13this is that they've got these lovely bikes, but they all look
- 16:16a bit well, they cut it quite well for this one.
- 16:18But with Ray they all look a bit uncomfortable riding the bikes
- 16:21and they're supposed to be all like proper like petrol heads.
- 16:24It's like, oh, it's not really, not really buying.
- 16:26Petrol heads, is that what you were getting?
- 16:29Well, later on she's bouncing up and down.
- 16:33But but Ray and Billy are supposed to be Oh.
- 16:35I see what you mean, Kings and Queens of speed.
- 16:40That's what they are. Now let me get this straight.
- 16:45Are you're telling me I love I love a character like Burton who
- 16:52just literally doesn't accept the it's been like the Brigadier
- 16:55don't accept it, and then he does accept it and then he'll
- 16:58just do anything for the. Doctor Yeah, but all of his
- 17:00lines are saying yes. It's not the Happy Hearts
- 17:03Holiday Club from Bolton. That's just a brilliant line.
- 17:07Where's that been in the last few years in Doctor Who?
- 17:09It's man awaiting an invasion for some other spacemen.
- 17:14I don't know what action I'm doing now.
- 17:18I love it when it goes. What is it?
- 17:19Although there's sort of tea on Mars.
- 17:25But also Mel in her denim is brilliant.
- 17:28She just looks great. This is like what we need her to
- 17:30be. She should have kept this on for
- 17:33dragon fire. Look at that fabulous
- 17:36neckerchief she's got on as well.
- 17:37It's great, yeah. But also this, this is the sort
- 17:41of thing that would be annoying in the Davison era, where it's
- 17:44like, just bring random people into the TARDIS.
- 17:46But Burton's just like, oh, can we go for a spin?
- 17:49This is great. You don't realise this of
- 17:51course, but the there have been 8 entire box sets of Big Finish
- 17:56adventures with the Doctor, Ray and Burton when they just went
- 18:00into the TARDIS there. Yeah.
- 18:03But yeah, it's called. Space bonds and T part 4I.
- 18:06Was going to say, but he had. He got his mind wiped at the
- 18:08last second, didn't he? When he came back it was all
- 18:10very sad. River Song.
- 18:12River Song did it. Sylvester McCoy looked very
- 18:14knowing there. Can't we have a spin?
- 18:16He goes. Oh, maybe later.
- 18:18You know. That's the end of the series.
- 18:23Why haven't they done Delta? I still don't understand.
- 18:28She's an exploded moon now anyway.
- 18:30That's the thing, yeah. We'll catch up.
- 18:32At some point. Don't you love how much he cares
- 18:34about his staff? But it's really, really,
- 18:37genuinely quite sweet and just calling everyone in like they're
- 18:42sending them off. Yeah, it's like you'll all spend
- 18:44the night in tandem. North Wales.
- 18:48I don't really know Wales that well.
- 18:49Is that a nice place? It is a.
- 18:51Lovely place. It's in Paris, it's what I've
- 18:53got friends that live near there.
- 18:54It's it's a really, really pretty part of the world.
- 18:56You know all the best places, you Wales.
- 18:59Cruelly. Oh, my God.
- 19:04The tour of the universe that you've done.
- 19:06Honestly, Delta has got nothing on you.
- 19:11That's it. You're going for one night.
- 19:12They're all looking at each other, right?
- 19:14Who am I going to hook up with tonight?
- 19:15Right? Yeah.
- 19:18I'm not sure I like the yellow. No, but I'd probably I'd also
- 19:23probably just be really invested in like a spin off about these
- 19:25characters as well. What happened once they once
- 19:27they got there? Yeah, what happened to the
- 19:30Skegness Glee Club that came along at the end, You know,
- 19:34because didn't you know, that was another bunch of time
- 19:36travelling aliens? I was about to say, definitely
- 19:39aliens. Yeah.
- 19:42No, Vinny, that's an order. Couldn't they have got out and
- 19:45gone? Oh fucking hell this ain't
- 19:47Disneyland. Like look at these locations
- 19:52though. Oh, picnic by the river.
- 19:55It's but that's the I think also because they went on location, I
- 19:59feel like the location's almost a little bit underused They
- 20:04because you don't really get the sense that it's that it's Barry
- 20:07Island. You occasionally see the
- 20:09distant, like there. You kind of get a bit of a sense
- 20:11of the scale of it. I think the only time I really
- 20:14could tell is Barry Island. It's the bit where the doctor
- 20:18comes in on the bike after the bus exploded and you can see the
- 20:22sea You. Can see the sea.
- 20:23Yeah, that's exactly. It's a beautiful shot.
- 20:26It's lovely, but that's kind of the only time you're like, oh,
- 20:28OK. Man, I would not get on that
- 20:31bike going down the hill like Jesus Christ.
- 20:36I say, everyone in the bus, come on.
- 20:40Oh, he's a good man, Mr. Burton. He really?
- 20:43Is crystal was big enough now? Just about.
- 20:47Yeah, that's almost cooked. Is this the bit where they all
- 20:51die? Where they all care?
- 20:53Massacre tonally. That's very odd, isn't it?
- 20:56Yeah. And I think the problem that is
- 20:58where the budget lets them down in the, it's such a sort of
- 21:03quick. Martin, you've been watching too
- 21:07much propaganda from the A-Team. You know, not everything goes up
- 21:10in a great load of petrol. Sometimes it's just a fucking
- 21:14spark. But I want to see their
- 21:16screaming burning faces. I was raised on the hinge Cliff
- 21:19years. It's all done through Bonnie.
- 21:21You know where she goes? Yes, they're dead.
- 21:25You know, to be fair, but also I do really like that line when
- 21:28he's like just like a captain Mr. Burton and he's like Major,
- 21:30actually. That's a really good line just
- 21:33for the character building that gives you.
- 21:35Look at Don Henderson, underlit like that.
- 21:38God he's scarier than any Dalek. And I also I like the their
- 21:42spaceship design, their massive screen in the moment ship and
- 21:46it's like the Dalek set you get in remembrance later on.
- 21:49Nothing subtle about it, is it? No, not at all.
- 21:52It looks a bit like a killing on battle cruiser when it comes
- 21:54down. You know, they haven't quite got
- 21:58the special effects to a point where they can land a spaceship.
- 22:01No, but they're trying and that I sort of appreciate that
- 22:04they're that they're giving it a go.
- 22:06Yeah, it's that. Well, it's better than when they
- 22:08tried in Silver Nemesis. That is just ghastly, I say,
- 22:13Well, do you know what we're doing now?
- 22:14We're just going around all the beauty spots.
- 22:16Yeah, just popping around, catching up with some good
- 22:18Kelly, catching up with the guest cars.
- 22:21I'd love to do a sort of tour of the locations of Della and the
- 22:24Bannermen, you know? That would be really nice.
- 22:26Yeah, absolutely. On a summer's day, I'd dress up
- 22:29like male get a neckerchief. But all of the places from the
- 22:34McCoy era are just sort of lovely.
- 22:36Go up and. Yeah, they do.
- 22:38There's a lot of, well, there's a lot of sun in the McCoy era as
- 22:41well, isn't? There lot of sun.
- 22:43Yeah, yeah, yeah. Battlefield Silver.
- 22:44Nemesis Survival. Survival.
- 22:47I mean, look, yeah, yeah, yeah. Great, Great show.
- 22:49The Galaxy you get. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:52They had some good, good summers.
- 22:54Yeah, but really. Really.
- 22:55Actually. Although, you know, you only
- 22:57have to compare the summer there to the summer on film in Android
- 23:01Sutara. And you're like, everything
- 23:04looks so much more rich on film, doesn't it?
- 23:06On. Yeah, on film.
- 23:07Yeah, On film, that's true. Yeah.
- 23:10Oh, she's sucking down on that honey there look.
- 23:15But I think Sylvester McCoy is having a great time as we see
- 23:18that messy around with that gait and stuff.
- 23:19He's just enjoying himself immensely.
- 23:22Was that the bit where Kev Mcculloch's doing the riff on
- 23:25the Doctor Who fame chips so great But.
- 23:31I love how Billy is just like he just does not give a shit.
- 23:35He's just like, oh, we're having a nice day out.
- 23:37And she's like, oh, he's like, why is everyone in such a lava?
- 23:41Why is everyone in such a lava? Come on.
- 23:46Oh, he was ionized. Oh God.
- 23:49They'd have to tone her down a bit.
- 23:51Can't imagine her in survival. Can you have a nut lesbian
- 23:53relationship with a cat? Can you?
- 23:58Just smoking around the house in Ghost Light, just fighting with
- 24:02Gwendolyn. Oh my God, stitch this Dracula.
- 24:09Oh, you're a lovely big pussy, aren't you?
- 24:14I don't know, it would have worked, or at least the stories
- 24:17would have been much different. They could just run forever.
- 24:22You know it's true. You're sitting there having a
- 24:24lovely picnic bar stream and a Bannerman war ship comes flying
- 24:28down and ruins your good time. Now you know you said about the
- 24:32explosion. In a minute.
- 24:33Watch their basket go up. Now that's a Big Bang in a
- 24:36minute. Yeah, but they can do
- 24:38pyrotechnics. I think that's why it annoys me
- 24:40a bit that you don't get the bus.
- 24:41I want it, I want, I want the explosion like you get in
- 24:43remembrance. But this is nicely done with the
- 24:46spaceship, the scales, nicely done.
- 24:47They're try. They're trying, really.
- 24:49Hard. We'll always admire ambition
- 24:52especially. Yeah, absolutely.
- 24:53But if it's not quite still better than Babylon five?
- 24:56Yes, far. Better than Babylon 5.
- 24:59Finally, this this pair have reached the plot look.
- 25:03But this little horn is amazing. It's a bugle.
- 25:06This is great. What is it goes Where is he,
- 25:10your Uncle Sam? Where is he, your Uncle Sam?
- 25:15Oh no, it's the tent that goes up in a big flame, isn't it?
- 25:18Oh yeah, Your Uncle Sam, he's great.
- 25:21But it's actually jokes that are actually funny.
- 25:23Like when he's like, this is Jerome P Wise mother calling
- 25:26from Wales in England. That's great.
- 25:29England like it's somewhere really exotic.
- 25:34But I. I don't wonder why he doesn't
- 25:36kill them. No, because it's very on form
- 25:39for him to kill them. Yeah, absolutely.
- 25:41I think that does that. That is the slight problem that
- 25:44he's so nasty, but then he sort of just locks these people up.
- 25:46You're like, why would you do that?
- 25:48I think it was Don Henderson, he said.
- 25:49I'm sorry. I cannot kill Stubby K, I'm
- 25:52really sorry. But we haven't really talked
- 25:55about it yet. But I also really like the the
- 25:57Batterman design with their sort of like funky sunglasses that
- 26:01they've got. I think they look great.
- 26:03I think they're really convincing as a military force.
- 26:06I mean, maybe being taken down by all that honey and bees in
- 26:08episode 3 less so, but so yeah, you're right, the look is great.
- 26:13Yeah, and it's the sort of look they could do in the new series
- 26:15and it wouldn't be embarrassing. It would be kind of cool
- 26:18actually, I think, if they did it.
- 26:19And this is affecting. I know the explosion is
- 26:22terrible, but it's affecting because Mel's had a relationship
- 26:24with these people. She's been partying with them
- 26:26the night before and now they're all dead.
- 26:29I think it's just that it's like that one shot from the gun and
- 26:32then it's like, oh, OK, but then she sells it like really well.
- 26:35That's and she doesn't often get moments when she gets to under
- 26:38play like this. No.
- 26:40And it's and Devrock's so horrible that she gets to really
- 26:43react to it, which is great. I like that he kicks her down
- 26:46and steps on her. Yeah.
- 26:49He's a bro, isn't he? But then the music's like and
- 26:54they're coming. I'm going to see if I can see
- 26:59the sea. It's this bit, isn't it?
- 27:01Yeah, so kick. Kick, kick, Bonnie, go on.
- 27:07Oh, look at their tongues. Brilliant.
- 27:10Yeah, there, that's. Yeah, that's amazing.
- 27:14But like, why would you only have that one shot?
- 27:17They're always shooting in the other direction, aren't they?
- 27:19Yeah. Oh, there's a little bit more
- 27:21there. A little bit, but with those
- 27:22fences in the way. But this is great.
- 27:24He's so horrible to melt. And then Burton coming in.
- 27:27Brilliant. And you know what?
- 27:29Much like Toby, I love somebody that comes in and, you know, he
- 27:33says, oh, kill me instead, you know, yeah, I'd like to be that
- 27:36person, but I know I wouldn't be.
- 27:38Take Martin instead. Fine, That's fine.
- 27:41Slowly pushed me to the front. Actually, no.
- 27:45Good grief. Yeah, you'd be right at the back
- 27:47of the pack. There's a few more I get in
- 27:49front of you, you know, Dylan Reece, you know.
- 27:53Dylan to the front. That's right.
- 27:55Yeah, James. Yeah.
- 27:56There you go. Oh, Sun Dapple trees.
- 27:59Beautiful. Beautiful.
- 28:01Really, really lovely. I mean, this could be anywhere,
- 28:04right? You could play Doctor Who?
- 28:06Yeah, in your local woods. Absolutely.
- 28:08And then you can get, you know, Silver Nemesis, much like we
- 28:10take the piss out of it. But the whole thing splashing
- 28:12around in the river, that's there's a lot of fun to be out
- 28:14there. Oh.
- 28:15Man, Belinda, you really are terrible.
- 28:18She's due to change. Singing time is near.
- 28:21She's really wooden, isn't she? But I feel like she's so I
- 28:25there's something about her, I feel like she's really
- 28:27committed. Like she's sort of like.
- 28:30You could say that about a lot of performance, right?
- 28:34Well, you said that about Mart Tyler.
- 28:37Oh God, yeah, don't be true. Hungry for my soul.
- 28:41She was very committed. Oh, did you hear?
- 28:45Oh, there she went. It's his bees that are calling
- 28:48us. She.
- 28:49Oh, bless her. Oh, now, now this is how you do
- 28:53it. Look, he underplays everything.
- 28:54It's so cash. Yeah.
- 28:56Have a bit of honey. There you go.
- 28:59But I know there's because have you seen there's that trailer
- 29:01that we sort of like narrate always.
- 29:04He's like, I've seen strange lights in the sky, but nothing
- 29:08like and it's that it's really it's really sweet and he is, he
- 29:11is. It's always where you know, it's
- 29:13like, are they a Time Lord? He 100%.
- 29:16He is one of the timeless doctors, I'm telling you.
- 29:18Yeah. He's a timeless Dr., isn't?
- 29:21He, Joe Martin, went, oh God, I'm changing.
- 29:23Oh, hello, Hello. They call me the beekeeper.
- 29:29Oh, I can't be bothered with this division business or no,
- 29:33no, no, there's like we're in Grubbler, he's eating that.
- 29:37That's that's amazing. What a great idea.
- 29:39I think it's salmon, isn't it? They said.
- 29:42Salmon, it's inside the pork. It's.
- 29:44In pork, yeah, but that but how brilliant.
- 29:48Just I just want to say McCoy aces this and I don't think he
- 29:54very often aces when he gets a lot of dialogue.
- 29:57But all of that sort of, you may think that might is right, but I
- 30:00can assure you, you won't get away with it.
- 30:01He's really good in this. And I think it works quite well
- 30:04because Gavrock so hissibly evil.
- 30:08He's just there, like jumping on his meat, his horrible hands, a
- 30:13spit on your justice. He's got little pig hands,
- 30:15doesn't he? They're horrible.
- 30:16Oh God, on my match if you went on a date and he took his gloves
- 30:20off. I'm right?
- 30:23Thanks. I've been sure heavy finger in.
- 30:26No you ain't, man. You are not.
- 30:28Oh God. Let me touch you.
- 30:32It'll be more like fisting with an hand like that, wouldn't it?
- 30:35Oh God, almost. So I'm so sorry.
- 30:37Club. I mean, this is the sort of
- 30:40scene that Colin Baker could do in his sleep.
- 30:43Oh God, yeah, You know. Yeah, you will go to trial for
- 30:46the genocide of the Shamrons life.
- 30:50You know about life, Gavron. Yeah.
- 30:51It's a it's really nicely sort of thought through.
- 30:55Lies, treachery and murder are your currency.
- 30:59Yeah, it's fabulous. And actually, I love the
- 31:02cliffhanger. The Zinger.
- 31:04It's great. It's great.
- 31:05Actually, I think I went a bit too far.
- 31:07Yeah, it's that that, and then you get in remembrance with the
- 31:11I think I might have miscalculated, which are both
- 31:13lovely little cliffhangers. Again, it's another sort of way
- 31:17of and it, it works far better than stuff like Davidson going,
- 31:20oh, not again when he's about to be beheaded again for the second
- 31:24time that season. I mean, doesn't it end on Bonnie
- 31:27sort of looking at the camera going?
- 31:29That's going to happen now, yeah.
- 31:31I think I may have got a little too, but I just think he looks
- 31:36great. But he says yes.
- 31:37Well. You know, I think he has very
- 31:41powerful eyes. Sylvester McCoy, he.
- 31:43Has he's got a brilliantly expressive face as well and he
- 31:47can sometimes go over, he can easily go over the top with a
- 31:51face like that, but sometimes when he controls it, he's he's
- 31:54really, really brilliant. He's got a deranged, eccentric
- 31:57mouth, unfortunately, and sometimes dialogue comes out in
- 32:00a very unusual way. But yeah, I mean, he could cut
- 32:04you down with a look. But even just in, you know, the
- 32:07TV movie where he's not speaking, which many would say
- 32:10is his finest performance, but you know.
- 32:13But I didn't say that in that recent commentary.
- 32:15Yes, timely malfunction the Master, but he's out there.
- 32:20Him just walking around is so doctor ish, like it's so great.
- 32:25Him just sat reading a book is brilliant.
- 32:27Like I just love that. What?
- 32:28Don't you remember that bit where he realizes a sort of
- 32:31cummy master has broken out of his prison in Natalia and the
- 32:34camera just zooms in on his face looking horrified?
- 32:38Yeah, do it with a look, McCoy, don't you?
- 32:41Don't you say words. Oh, it'd be a bit tricky on Big
- 32:44Finish. You know, I recently did Live
- 32:4734, you know, which was an absolute zinger.
- 32:50But Sylvester McCoy was only in one episode's worth of
- 32:52materials. That could be why I've got to
- 32:55say, right? I mean, the plot is just mad,
- 32:58right? There is really no plot despite
- 33:00we're just running around the countryside.
- 33:02Who gives a? Fuck yeah.
- 33:03You don't care at all. You're not.
- 33:05It's not like one of those kind of new series stories where it
- 33:10drags and you're like, what we actually doing?
- 33:12What's this about? Because you're having so much
- 33:14fun, it doesn't matter at all. But it's also is what it's not
- 33:18like something like Oh dear. And I don't mind this story, but
- 33:22it's miserable, like Attack of the Side Men where you're sort
- 33:26of, you're hanging out with a load of boring heavies and this
- 33:29who are really aggressive with and they're just sort of walking
- 33:31over a Gray miserable quarry. Here we're hanging out with the
- 33:35funniest group of characters you can possibly think of.
- 33:38Yeah. Beautiful setting whilst great
- 33:40musics playing. And they're all in it from I'm
- 33:44puffing Goron we, but they're all in it basically from the
- 33:46beginning. So it's not like in SAC and
- 33:48Cybermen where every 10 minutes you get a new group of
- 33:50characters that you also don't particularly care about.
- 33:53But then it's like, oh, and then the Kryons are here.
- 33:55OK, great. But like in this, you're like,
- 33:57no, we've kind of met everyone. We know everyone's relationships
- 34:02in and relationships, the kind of relationships we haven't seen
- 34:05necessarily much or at all in Doctor Who.
- 34:08And we know what everyone's about.
- 34:10We know who the villains are and we're just watching them
- 34:13interact and that's really, really pleasant to watch.
- 34:17Well, and what's also pleasant is I think Andrew Cartmer
- 34:20realises that our Eric often forgot is that people are really
- 34:26lovely to hang about with when they are lovely people, right.
- 34:30So with that, just charming, funny people are really nice.
- 34:34You know, I mean, you could probably name a handful of
- 34:36people in those five years that Eric Script edited, but there's
- 34:40not many. No.
- 34:41And often, often when you would want to hang out with them, it's
- 34:44because they're such an asshole or, you know, like.
- 34:47Like Joe Bell, do you remember? Joe Bell.
- 34:49Yeah. I was gonna say, but or like
- 34:50Rula Lenska, you know, because she's such a kind of bitch that
- 34:53you sort of hang out. She's not.
- 34:55She's not really like a nice person, but she's just going to
- 34:58be really withering about everyone.
- 34:59You're like, yeah, I can. I like hanging out with shock
- 35:01eye. Do you serve humans here?
- 35:05You know, like, yeah, usually they're just very arch and
- 35:08that's why they're fun to hang around.
- 35:10With it's true actually that the McCoy era a time of the Rani
- 35:15yeah, I kind of like wonder and whatever like that that that
- 35:19supporting cast but. After that before she turns into
- 35:22a skellington. But yeah, it's on for a bit.
- 35:26But it is quite nice that you do have these supporting casts
- 35:30where you are invested. You, I think it's pretty much
- 35:35every McCoy story, you have at least one or two of the support.
- 35:38You're sort of really invested. You care about them.
- 35:41You don't want bad things to happen to them.
- 35:44I'd forgotten how in Happiness Patrol you sort of.
- 35:48Leslie Dunlop. Leslie Dunlop You really do care
- 35:51for those characters and it that's that's kind of that's
- 35:55really sweet and it and it does make you engage with the story
- 36:00in a different way that you're like, I actually really hope
- 36:02these people survive. And a lot of the time, they do.
- 36:06It's it's tricky to get that so instantly right.
- 36:08Actually, Leslie Dummell's character that just that line of
- 36:11I woke up 1 morning. Oh, there was a million Blues
- 36:13songs and start like that. No, but I did wake up 1 morning.
- 36:16And then she can give her back story as to why she's unhappy.
- 36:20Yeah, Happiness Patrol. And you instantly like her,
- 36:22right? And Ace instantly lives her and
- 36:24their friends straight away. And she's always got a mate,
- 36:26hasn't she? Ling Tai in Battlefield.
- 36:29Oh fuck me. When she gets out of the car and
- 36:31goes, I just love her. Who else is Who else is she
- 36:36hanging around with in? Well, survival, she gets a whole
- 36:40bunch, doesn't she? All Mags from Great show.
- 36:43Oh, Mags. Yeah, yeah, I swell.
- 36:45Yeah. Often Lady Painful in Nemesis.
- 36:49All. Things shall soon be mine.
- 36:54Oh, no, of course. The most likeable character?
- 36:56Mrs. Remington, Of course. Obviously, yeah, actually that's
- 36:59true. That's possibly though that is
- 37:01maybe one of the problems in Silver Nemesis is that you don't
- 37:07really have a gang of people for them to hang out with.
- 37:11They're just kind of running the doctrine ace.
- 37:12They're kind of running around and it's like Richard is sort of
- 37:16likeable. I suppose that's by the end by
- 37:19the end. After she, yeah, I'll see what
- 37:21it's like here. They're just sort of gathering
- 37:23people by the scene. Yeah, yeah, they've got a big
- 37:26bunch of mates. And even in like Cursor Fenrick,
- 37:29I mean, she doesn't sort of stay friends with Gene and Phyllis,
- 37:31but she tries to be friends with Gene and Phyllis.
- 37:33Like, you know, she gives a go and then you've got grandma and
- 37:37Kathleen and stuff. And that's that's, that's really
- 37:39nice those those relationships and and Wainwright and there's
- 37:42people that you actually really get upset when they get killed
- 37:45off and ghost lights full of interesting and kooky characters
- 37:49and things like that. That's what you really want, I
- 37:52think. And I think Carmel understand,
- 37:55like you said, exactly. He understands that you need to
- 37:57have people that you're gonna root for outside of just the
- 38:00doctor and his friend. Whereas the Saywood stuff was
- 38:03like, you know, the only ones that are coming out of this
- 38:05alive and the doctor and his friends.
- 38:07And even then, not always. Most of them when.
- 38:11You know, so eventually goes and the first script we get is
- 38:14terror of the Vervoids, you know, and I just love everybody
- 38:16in that. Oh yeah.
- 38:18Mostly because they're all terrible hands.
- 38:21Yeah, but that is something actually talking about Chris
- 38:23Clough. I think Chris Clough has a
- 38:24really good sense of a really good way of expressing the scale
- 38:30of things. So in Terror of the Vervoids,
- 38:31you get those brilliant scenes where you have the guy fighting
- 38:35the Ver void into the Pulveriser and then getting killed.
- 38:38But it's like there is sort of like a battle going on outside
- 38:43of the scenes that we're seeing and that in the lounge when
- 38:45they're trying to fight them off that.
- 38:47I think that's a really neat way of showing the scale of events
- 38:52without having to, you know, use any particular budget to do it.
- 38:56The the my only issue with Chris Cloth is that he checked out
- 39:01come Silford Nemesis. Oh, yeah.
- 39:03He barely bothers to point a camera in that It's Yeah, like,
- 39:07I think it's fun and delirious and actually there is a sense of
- 39:10space to it. There's lots of location work
- 39:13and yeah, fast locations. Yeah, the hanger stuff is good.
- 39:16But man, oh man, you know you betrayed me.
- 39:19Have I taught you nothing? Oh, throw the dust at the side.
- 39:22I mean, it's just so lame the. Director that that is very true
- 39:26actually. Maybe that's why they didn't
- 39:28think of the new series. I wonder if this is his finest
- 39:32achievement actually down in the Bannerman in terms of a tone and
- 39:36acing it. I think it's I I do really like
- 39:40Terror of the Vervoids as well, but I think it probably is this.
- 39:45I think it probably, although I mean that I know, I don't know
- 39:47how much they consulted him, but that re rejigged version of
- 39:50terror of the Vervoids I thought was so much fun.
- 39:53Take, you know, the bit without the trial scenes and like, oh,
- 39:56that was that was an absolute riot.
- 39:59Wow, Martin Brown's study. I think it's the vocabulary of
- 40:03all humans. So antediluvian.
- 40:09I suppose we should go and have some fun and watch episode 3
- 40:13where things just get even more delightful.
- 40:16Yes, let's do it.
