Transcript
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: Cool, it's time for another opening crack.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: How are we doing tonight, fellas?
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: That was subtle.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: That was our first bottle.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was just gonna say, yeah, this is not a can that we're opening to.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: No, we're moving it into glass.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Does it still count as an opening crack?
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: The opening.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Doesn't have the same.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: It doesn't work like that.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: You nailed it.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: Once again, time for the opening crack, the sideshow to the DD show that we normally do where we taste and rank some epic brews.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: It is time, though, that we do a Christmas brew.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: Next week is Christmas.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: How's everybody feeling about that?
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: Almost ready.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Almost ready.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: We gotta start shopping.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: I still got some gifts to buy.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: Well, that's a problem.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: Christmas is next week.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: You just print out the picture, right?
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: And be like, in transit.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: I should do better under pressure.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: I ordered it.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: It'll be here next Thursday.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: It's fine.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: It's fine.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: Don't worry about us, guys.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: Don't judge too harshly.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Like straight no chaser.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: Do I listen to it?
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: An a cappella group.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: They've got a pretty good song about Christmas.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: We'll listen to it later.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Look it up.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: Look it up.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: Brett and I are both like, what?
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Can't believe you don't know this.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: Anyway, okay, let's actually get to the beer here.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: Holiday beer.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: Who wants to intro our holiday beer?
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: Phil, you brought it.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: You intro it.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: We have beer.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Uh this is beer, it's called Shiner Holiday Cheer.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: And it is brewed by Spenzel Brewery.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Uh not gonna lie, I thought that Shiner beers were brewed by Shiner, and they're not.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: They're brewed by Spenzel Brewery uh in Shiner, Texas.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: That is where the shiner comes from.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: But this beer um is a nail brewed with peaches and pecans.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: And I think so far, first taste that it's delicious.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: It is quite good.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: I really like this.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, this is like straight out of Super the Super Mario movie, like peaches, peaches, peaches, peaches.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: It's okay.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: So it says it it's it's brewed with peaches and pecans.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: Peaches are definitely very forward, but that pecan note underneath it, like just kind of mellows it out and takes off like the fruity edge to it.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: It's really good.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: It's a smooth fruity beer.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: Uh Brett, what are we looking at as far as packaging?
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Uh it's got the you know, Christmasy snowflakes and that sort of thing on it.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Oh, the snowflakes are like this one's like hop buds.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Oh, it is.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, it is like wheats.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: And wheats, yes.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: Okay, that's really cool.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: Okay, that's super clever.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: Special brewing, you get bonus points for that because that was that's pretty deep.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: Sneaky.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: Very sneaky.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: I like this.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: Uh I think Phil said that it's an ale brewed with peaches and pecans, but uh, but specifically, Untapped says it is a Dunkelweizen, uh, which is a Bavarian-style dark wheat ale.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: Um, I will say it doesn't well when I think dark wheat ales, I think like heavy malt beers, like something that has like stronger flavor to it.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: This is not, this is very mellow.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: I feel like a lot of times too, when I think of like a dunkelweizen, that I think like bready, and I don't necessarily get that here.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Agreed, like yeastiness to it.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I agree.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: I don't get that either.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: But that and that could they may have done that intentionally just with those peaches.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: Peaches are a strong flavor, it's pretty sweet.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: Um, what do you guys think as far as taste profile beyond the peaches and pecans?
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Are you tasting anything else in there?
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Hold on, savoring.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Give me a moment while I run it across my palate.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: I don't really pick up on a lot more other than that myself, but it's got a full pic flavor to it, but it's not more than that.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Like that's all that's what it is.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Like it's it has just enough like malt, I feel like, that it it is a full mouth feel, but it's not it doesn't taste malty.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: I don't feel like I agree with that at all.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: It's like right there.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but whatever it is, uh the special brewing company like balanced this out extremely well.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: Like if you're gonna brew a dunkelweizen and yet you're gonna get other flavors in there that take the priority, like the main show, you have to be very careful about the balance of that malt in there.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: And it's like it has to be the right, for lack of a better term, it has to be that right maltiness because if it's too dark, you're gonna taste that breadiness and stuff.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: You know, holiday beers are notorious for being overbearing.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Like, yes, they're so flavorful, there's so one uh minute season of when they taste right.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: This one I would drink for an extended period of time.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Like I would drink this all winter.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it doesn't come across as heavy to me.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: No, like it has that full mouthfeel, but it is not a heavy beer.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: I think that leads to some of that.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: Like, because Christmas beers tend to be heavy, they're very spice forward and heavy beers.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: That's the difference, though.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: So I think we notice the peaches and we notice the pecans, and there's kind of this absence of those spices.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: But I think that's why it's delicious.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: Because so many of those other beers just hit it hard, totally, sometimes too hard, you know.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: By the time you're done with lots of cinnamon, lots of yeah, all those.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: It doesn't have it, it's clean, right?
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: And and I do feel like so.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: This is obviously a seasonal beer for uh shiner, but you you gave this to me in June, like right off the ice, cold.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: It would be a solid beer, yeah.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: It would be just as good then.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: Um, ABV on this comes across as a 5.4, which I also feel like is low for most dunkles.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: I feel like they're typically higher in ABB, so it's very drinkable beer.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: And in terms of bitterness, the IBU units, uh, only a 22, so there's not a whole lot of hoppiness in here.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: You do get a little bit of it, like lingering on your palate a hit a little bit, but not nothing crazy.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: I do really, really like this.
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: Um, but we're gonna move on to talking about uh bringing the DD into this, if you will.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: So, what uh where are you finding this?
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: What pub?
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: What's it called?
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: Phil, what you got?
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: I have decided that in Silvery Moon there is a little cafe called uh Candy's Cheerful Cafe.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: And she serves holiday cheer every day of the year.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: Ooh.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: It's like one of those Santa Christmas stores that's open in the middle of June.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Okay, love it.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: I'm down.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: I'm down.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to decide if she also makes the ornaments and like sells them year-round to oh, she has to.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: I feel like she does.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: She totally does.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: She's very jolly.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: How do you define jolly?
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Uh, I'm going to uh someplace we haven't touched on.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Far to the west, the elven glade, where you are gonna find the tipsy tap room and toppled tinkard.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: With a mouthful.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Uh, but at that, at uh the elves like to dine on this one, and it is the peach fuzz mead.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Ooh, I like that.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Yes, yeah.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Makes me think of Fuzzy Nables, which is still accurate.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean it works.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Also fits.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: They probably also serve that there.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: Sure, yeah.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, I'm going far north, uh, just south of Icewind Dale to Raven Rock, uh, at the Frosty Griffin Tavern, where you will find the North Star Nectar.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: Ooh, that's a good one.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: And that's where this bad boy is.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: Go in there and get your bot, get you uh uh uh uh what are these things?
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: Tangard is that the word you're searching for.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: I probably don't.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: It's been a long day.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: You get yourself a tankard of North Star and flagon.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: North Star Nectar.
- 8:35SPEAKER_02: I can't even keep my alliterations right.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: Okay, sorry about that.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: Um, all right, so Yearnay, boys.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: Do you like this beer?
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: What do you think?
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: Big thumbs up for me.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: Ooh, sorry, I was busy taking another drink.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: Thumbs up.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: Thumbs up for me.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: So this is actually what two beers in a row that have gotten green sweetness.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's after the start that we had during season two with the uh pistachio and the pickles.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: Okay, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have brought that up.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Uh, but now before we uh wrap this up, let's talk about where this falls on our uh uh challenge rating.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: So one being cream males, domestics, two or twenty, not two, twenty being double IPA's Imperial Stouts.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: Where are you throwing this on the scale, boys?
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: And this follows the same challenge rating that DD follows from a challenge rating one and all the way up even beyond 20.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but uh I'm gonna go low, like a four.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: Like this one I would encourage somebody to try that doesn't like beer, but if they like fruit, if they like peaches, yes, try this one.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: I'm close to that.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: I think I might go like a six though.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: I would get them to try it, but I think they would have a problem with the slight like punch.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just the slight like malty-ish taste at the end.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go five.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: I I agree with hey, I I was gonna say three, but but Phil makes a really good point.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: I I think I think taste-wise, flavor profile is low.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: Agreed.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: The mouthfeel is is what brings it up for me.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: If it had a clean finish, then absolutely.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: But it does linger on your page.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: It does, yeah.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna go a five.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: I'm not quite as high as you because I think I think the peaches are just so damn good that it it it pulls its weight.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: And as a reminder, that's not like if we're recommending it or not.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: It's just for a non-beer drinker, I'm coming in, how are they gonna handle it?
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so so the lower the score, if you're not a beer drinker, the more likely you are to try this.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: Or if you're your average Bud Light course light drinker, how likely are you to try this?
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Personal CR would be like a one.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Oh, absolutely.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: For for just us, yeah, this is the bottom of the pile.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: Very drinkable.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think that's gonna do it for that's gonna do it for this bonus episode.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: Stay tuned for more beer reviews in the future.
