Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / Sam Altman's Nuclear Power Company Oklo Set to Go Public
Transcript
- 0:00Hi everybody and welcome back to the Elon Musk podcast, where we
- 0:03delve into the world of technology and innovation.
- 0:05Today we're spotlighting Sam Altman, founder of Open AI
- 0:09Visionary, with an ambitious plan to reshape the future of
- 0:12clean energy now. And his focus Oclo, A
- 0:15groundbreaking nuclear technology startup which has
- 0:19recently revealed its plans to go public next year.
- 0:22Altman, alongside former Global Banking CEO of Citigroup Michael
- 0:26Klein, have cofounded a special purpose acquisition company on S
- 0:29Pack known as Alt C Acquisition Corp, to facilitate the process.
- 0:34Now OCLO, under Altman stewardship aims to
- 0:36revolutionize power generation by miniaturization of nuclear
- 0:40reactors, providing accessible clean energy to communities
- 0:43around the globe. Now, Oclo's nuclear fission
- 0:46technology involves creating micro reactors housed in smaller
- 0:50power plants. To generate nuclear power
- 0:52without creating nuclear waste at all, and if successful, this
- 0:56could allow remote locations to access power autonomously, a
- 0:59critical game changer in today's energy landscape.
- 1:03And with the upcoming public offering expected to inject $500
- 1:06million in Oclo's operations, the company plans to expedite
- 1:11the construction of its first microreactor.
- 1:14Meanwhile, Altman, a known proponent of both a I and clean
- 1:17energy innovations, is invested significantly in Helion.
- 1:20Another nuclear energy company broadening his approach to
- 1:23advancing nuclear energy research.
- 1:25Now stay tuned as we delve deeper into the nuclear energy
- 1:29topic and Sam Altman will be taking a quick break, but don't
- 1:33go anywhere. We'll be back shortly.
- 1:35More on Oclo's exciting journey and Sam Altman's vision for a
- 1:39clean energy future. Oclo's pursuit of clean energy
- 1:42begins with its attempt to miniaturize nuclear power
- 1:44generation. The company is currently working
- 1:46on perfecting the science behind nuclear fission.
- 1:49The process that is typically associated with huge traditional
- 1:53nuclear power plants. By reducing the scale of the
- 1:56reactor, AKLO seeks to create a more manageable and arguably a
- 2:00more safe version of the energy sources that we're used to.
- 2:05Established in 2013 by Carolyn Cochran and Jacob DeWitt, who
- 2:08currently serve as the Chief Operating Officer and CEO,
- 2:11respectively, AKLO had a serendipitous encounter with
- 2:15Altman in its founding year. It was through a meeting with
- 2:18DeWitt and Cochran that Altman discovered Oclo's potential,
- 2:21eventually inviting this startup to join Y Combinator, the
- 2:24renowned startup accelerator group.
- 2:27Now this encounter, as reported by CNBC, marked the beginning of
- 2:30Altman's involvement in Oclo's vision for the future of nuclear
- 2:34power. And since its founding, OCLO is
- 2:36raised approximately $50 million, with DeWitt disclosing
- 2:39this figure in a recent interview with Fortune.
- 2:42Data from the deal tracking website Pitch Book further
- 2:45indicates that Oclo received an additional grant of around
- 2:48$420,000 from the US Department of Energy.
- 2:52The upcoming public offering is expected to inject an additional
- 2:55$500 million into Oclo's coffers, earmarked for the
- 3:00construction of its first microreactor.
- 3:03Into its words, going public has anticipated to attract the right
- 3:07kind of financing and at a larger scale given the
- 3:09similarities of what's been done.
- 3:11And other power generation technologies with similar power
- 3:15sales models. Oclo's business model is
- 3:18inspired by those of burgeoning renewable energy firms, which
- 3:21leverage their public status to attract financing.
- 3:24Oclo's unique approach to nuclear energy involves creating
- 3:27smaller power plants that house their micro reactor technology.
- 3:31Based on the designs available on Oclo's website, these power
- 3:34plants will resemble Nordic mountain lodges and beyond their
- 3:39aesthetically pleasing designs. These power plants have a
- 3:42transformative goal to generate nuclear power without creating
- 3:46any nuclear waste and if successful, Oclo's micro
- 3:50reactors could potentially operate autonomously.
- 3:53Critical feature considering their design for deployment in
- 3:56very remote locations. And according to the Witt,
- 4:00Oclo's micro reactors could serve 2 distinct markets in the
- 4:03future. The first comprises of
- 4:05facilities such as data centers and military bases that seek to
- 4:08boost their power capacity. Will lack access to an existing
- 4:12power grid. The 2nd includes companies they
- 4:14make to meet their decarbonization goals through
- 4:17innovative means. A promotional video featuring
- 4:20the Wits highlights Oclo's ambitious goals.
- 4:23They say building 1 plant is relatively easy.
- 4:26The fun part is thinking about how you build hundreds or even
- 4:30thousands. This underscores the company's
- 4:33large scale aspirations for the future.
- 4:36Now OCLO has already secured a permit from the Department of
- 4:38Energy. To construct its first micro
- 4:41reactor at the Idaho National Laboratory, a premier US Center
- 4:45for nuclear research, and the company expects this plan to be
- 4:48operational by about 2026 or 2027 and will receive used
- 4:53nuclear fuel from the laboratory to power its micro reactor.
- 4:57For Altman, though, Oclo is only a part of his broader vision for
- 5:00the future, this vision hinged on advancements in a I and
- 5:03energy has spurred him to invest $375 million, his highest.
- 5:08Personal investment to date at Helion, another nuclear energy
- 5:12company, and then return Microsoft, which has reportedly
- 5:15invested 13 billion in open AI. That's also Altman's recently
- 5:20agreed to purchase energy from Helion, started in 2028.
- 5:24And in the grand scheme of things, Altman's simultaneous
- 5:27investments in Oclo and Helion represent a broader approach to
- 5:31advancing nuclear energy research while Helion delves
- 5:34into nuclear fusion. Which combines unstable atoms to
- 5:37create energy. OCLO works on nuclear fission, a
- 5:41process that releases energy by splitting atoms.
- 5:44And despite the infancy of nuclear fusion technology, a
- 5:47significant milestone was achieved in December of 2022
- 5:50when scientists from the Department of Energy reported a
- 5:53net energy gained from a nuclear fusion reactor.
- 5:56In an interview with CNBC, Outman cited the lowering of
- 6:00energy costs as a key enabler of a better future for humanity.
- 6:04This perspective aligns with Altman's larger narrative, which
- 6:07has garnered attention following the release of the revolutionary
- 6:10A I Language Model ChatGPT in November, he said.
- 6:14I think we can have a much, much better world, and that's from
- 6:18Insider in April. Altman's future focus thinking
- 6:21resonates with DeWitt nocla. Altman's future focus thinking
- 6:25resonates with DeWitt and Oclo, with a CEO noting that such a
- 6:28perspective is what's really important to provide clarity on
- 6:32what problems to focus on. While running the daytoday
- 6:36operations of Oclo keeps the wit grounded in immediate concerns
- 6:40like plant construction and public offerings.
- 6:42The longterm vision of Altman inspires him to dream of a
- 6:45future where Oclo provides energy at planetary scales for a
- 6:50billion plus years Now. Thank you so much for listening
