- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, Paul Slacktiz. This is a big joy.
- 0:02Speaker 2: I'm here with Suki Ray, a good friend for a
- 0:04Speaker 2: long long time, and she's going to share some of
- 0:07Speaker 2: her memoirs, memories and other good things with us right here,
- 0:12Speaker 2: right now, and with the ducks.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Is that we're lucky ducky all right, Suki Ray, go
- 0:18Speaker 1: for it.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Thanks for the memories anyway, Thank you Paul for having me.
- 0:24Speaker 3: It's always a joy to be with you on Good
- 0:26Speaker 3: News broadcast. This is my memoir. I don't even know
- 0:30Speaker 3: if you can see it. Can you see it?
- 0:32Speaker 1: We can't see Make it a little straighter, a little
- 0:36Speaker 1: uh yeah.
- 0:38Speaker 3: You can't. You can't see it well. But anyway, it's
- 0:40Speaker 3: called Divine Tuning and it's about my Yellow Brook road
- 0:46Speaker 3: track on the music business. In the music business.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Oh yeah, y hey, you can play the flute like
- 0:54Speaker 1: nobody's John Pierre Rapaul. He learned from her.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Okay, I don't think I don't think you're accurate about
- 1:02Speaker 3: that Paull. But that was a different Paull, not John
- 1:04Speaker 3: Pierre Paul. That's all slap because anyway, this is my
- 1:08Speaker 3: musical memoir. It's complete with original poetry and song lyrics
- 1:15Speaker 3: and It's basically about my life, even from when I
- 1:18Speaker 3: was a kid to when I put on my auto
- 1:22Speaker 3: biographical musical. So I'm going to read a few short excerpts.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Is that okay, lucky Yes, Lucky duckies, Ucky duckies, let
- 1:33Speaker 3: me try to okay. So this portion is from the prologue,
- 1:39Speaker 3: which is based on my musical, which came out two
- 1:42Speaker 3: thousand and five, presented it at that point. It's from
- 1:46Speaker 3: I Don't want to be, I want to Be. The adrenaline. Oh,
- 1:51Speaker 3: and I forgot to say it's about the time the
- 1:54Speaker 3: vice president of Columbia Records and and ire came down
- 1:57Speaker 3: to hear my band play. I'm not going to tell
- 1:59Speaker 3: you them much more about it, but here it goes.
- 2:02Speaker 3: The adrenaline in the room ricocheted off the walls like
- 2:05Speaker 3: Mexican jumping beams. Was I hallucinating from homeopathic remedies? It
- 2:10Speaker 3: was my big break really about to happen in an hour.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Doctor George Butler, VP of Columbia Records, was limmoing down
- 2:18Speaker 3: to hear my band play. At six o'clock tonight. My group,
- 2:23Speaker 3: the Twilight People, and I, drenched in anxiety and sweat,
- 2:26Speaker 3: were running down don't make waves. For the fourteenth time,
- 2:31Speaker 3: I had footed the bill for the Dingy Mildewed rehearsal
- 2:34Speaker 3: space at Broadway in eighty sixth Street for the main event.
- 2:38Speaker 3: This was my project. Project was the word that all
- 2:42Speaker 3: the musicians used when you ask them what they were doing,
- 2:45Speaker 3: although probably behind closed doors, most of them were picking
- 2:49Speaker 3: their cuticles and waiting for a phone that rarely, if
- 2:54Speaker 3: ever rang.
- 2:57Speaker 1: What were you going to ask me, Pauling, I'm trying
- 3:01Speaker 1: not to think about what you're talking about. Okay, with
- 3:05Speaker 1: the cuticles, go.
- 3:06Speaker 3: On, okay, okay, the cuticles. I'm gonna raise one more
- 3:10Speaker 3: short excerpt. This is from my tenure, if you would
- 3:14Speaker 3: call it that, playing music for an organization called Muni
- 3:18Speaker 3: Music under New York, and most of the time for
- 3:21Speaker 3: many years I played in Grand Central Station. Of all places,
- 3:26Speaker 3: my illustrious tenure with Muni could translate into a Netflix series.
- 3:31Speaker 3: I'm sure the entire roster of acts had their own
- 3:34Speaker 3: share of colorful experiences. Here is one of the true,
- 3:38Speaker 3: unforgettable tales of what happened to me while I was
- 3:41Speaker 3: playing at Grand Central one Saturday during my twelve to
- 3:46Speaker 3: three shifts. A producer came up to inform me he
- 3:49Speaker 3: was shooting a commercial and I needed to stop playing immediately.
- 3:53Speaker 3: I showed him my permit and I explained to him
- 3:56Speaker 3: that this was my time slot. He reiterated he needed quiet.
- 4:01Speaker 3: I'll be glad to stop playing, but would you mind
- 4:04Speaker 3: paying me? I queried. He went to ask the director.
- 4:08Speaker 3: He came back and asked me how much I wanted.
- 4:10Speaker 3: I told him one hundred dollars would suffice. He handed
- 4:13Speaker 3: me the bills and I sat quietly for an hour.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Then I resumed playing and he came back again. He
- 4:19Speaker 3: repeated at his earlier demand. I gave him my requirements.
- 4:23Speaker 3: He came back with another one hundred dollars. I packed
- 4:26Speaker 3: up and left. I made more that day not playing
- 4:30Speaker 3: than I ever did.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Playing as a New York story for you. That's beautiful.
- 4:39Speaker 1: And so are you humming on that flute lately? Are
- 4:43Speaker 1: you working it? Are you playing somewhere?
- 4:46Speaker 3: I'm working it. I'm actually playing tonight, which is New
- 4:49Speaker 3: Year's Eve?
- 4:50Speaker 1: Oh wow?
- 4:51Speaker 3: Yeah, at the Integral Yoga Center. I've been with this
- 4:54Speaker 3: group for about seven years. It's called the Moon Kurtan
- 4:58Speaker 3: Band moon Man. The time is Hindu chanting and spiritual
- 5:09Speaker 3: music it's just one of the many types of music
- 5:12Speaker 3: I play.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Oh, and I think that's very interesting. We like that
- 5:16Speaker 1: spirituality aspect, I know, the integral yoga. You know, I'm
- 5:22Speaker 1: a yoga instructor certified.
- 5:24Speaker 3: I do not know you were a yoga instructor, but
- 5:28Speaker 3: I do know you're an ordained interfaith minister as I
- 5:31Speaker 3: am too.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Yes, I know. Let's let's let's let's do a ceremony
- 5:36Speaker 1: for each other here home shot. Yeah, so you were
- 5:42Speaker 1: doing good, we're doing good. So you're playing tonight? And
- 5:44Speaker 1: so what are there will be some of the kinds
- 5:46Speaker 1: of So you are you? You're a flower? Is it
- 5:48Speaker 1: a floutest or a flutist? What are you?
- 5:51Speaker 3: How many times does one ask this question? Is it
- 5:54Speaker 3: a potato? Potato? Tomato? Tomato, potato tomato?
- 6:00Speaker 1: That's called that's called the whole thing off? All right?
- 6:05Speaker 3: I mean, you know everyone's going to ask that question,
- 6:08Speaker 3: probably at least a few times a day. Is it
- 6:12Speaker 3: a flutist or flattest whatever, flounce or flutes your boat?
- 6:16Speaker 3: Is enough?
- 6:18Speaker 1: All right, We're going to go with that answer. So
- 6:22Speaker 1: can people like pick up your new book here and
- 6:25Speaker 1: what's the name of it? Again?
- 6:26Speaker 3: Well, they can pick it up right here.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Here it is, I'm over to your house.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm expecting a few thousand people in the next
- 6:35Speaker 3: few hours. No, it's on Amazon dot com. Oh, it's
- 6:39Speaker 3: actually my second book. But I believe I was on
- 6:42Speaker 3: your show for the first one, which is a book
- 6:45Speaker 3: about I wrote an Israel of poetry. But this is
- 6:49Speaker 3: not quite that.
- 6:51Speaker 1: This is different. Do you got one more thing you
- 6:53Speaker 1: can read to us right now? And oh, one thing
- 6:57Speaker 1: as we go into the new year of twenty twenty five.
- 7:00Speaker 3: But it's not spiritual. I'd have to it might take
- 7:03Speaker 3: a while.
- 7:05Speaker 1: It doesn't have to be spiritual, you know, there's okay,
- 7:09Speaker 1: this with just.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Okay, okay. This is actually some of my song lyrics
- 7:16Speaker 3: which I'm including in the book.
- 7:18Speaker 1: So everybody, here's what I suggest you to do. This
- 7:20Speaker 1: is what I do. I don't know if you like
- 7:22Speaker 1: to do it, but this is what I do when
- 7:24Speaker 1: I actually really want to hear something. Because I'm a visualizer.
- 7:28Speaker 1: So if I'm watching you now, you're beautiful you, Suki Ray.
- 7:32Speaker 3: And I'm saying thank you to the beautiful.
- 7:34Speaker 1: You, and I see this gorgeous background of a late
- 7:39Speaker 1: Caserine lake and trees. If I really want to hear
- 7:42Speaker 1: something and think. I do this in the show Jeopardy. Also,
- 7:46Speaker 1: I close my eyes and I listen to the words
- 7:49Speaker 1: that are being said because I basically can't do two
- 7:52Speaker 1: things at once. It's what it boils down to, because
- 7:56Speaker 1: I'm a visual guy and it's hard. So please share
- 7:59Speaker 1: with me, and my eyes are going to be closed.
- 8:01Speaker 1: So that's what I'm going to do.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Okay. So this is near the closing of the book,
- 8:08Speaker 3: in which I say, I make some comments about my experiences,
- 8:15Speaker 3: and I also share the lyrics from one of my songs.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Okay.
- 8:21Speaker 3: I have always been a seeker, even when groping in
- 8:23Speaker 3: the darkness, I've had the power to redeem myself with
- 8:27Speaker 3: my own lyrics. Here they are. We walk this way
- 8:31Speaker 3: so many times before in loneliness and fear. But I
- 8:35Speaker 3: don't have to worry anymore because I feel a presence
- 8:37Speaker 3: near me. I call out to the spirit divine. Now
- 8:41Speaker 3: she's come to set me free. I'm waiting for the light,
- 8:45Speaker 3: waiting for the light. I'm waiting for the light to
- 8:49Speaker 3: shine on me.
- 8:51Speaker 1: That's beautiful. When we got the sirens in the back, sih,
- 8:56Speaker 1: it was perfect. There was actually they were whistling and
- 9:00Speaker 1: they were joining the show. That's a beautiful thing, Suki
- 9:03Speaker 1: rengratulations name in the book and where do we go
- 9:05Speaker 1: to get it again?
- 9:07Speaker 3: Thank you so much, Paul. It's called Divine Tuning, a
- 9:11Speaker 3: musical memoir, and you can get it presently on Amazon
- 9:17Speaker 3: dot com. Look for Suki Ray s u k I
- 9:20Speaker 3: last name r A E.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Oh.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I forgot to mention. It's either e book or paperback.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Oh, okay, that's a that's an important Sukie Ray's a
- 9:35Speaker 1: beautiful person and boy, she can play the through. She
- 9:39Speaker 1: taught Joan Pierre Rampaul how to play.
- 9:44Speaker 3: It's a great exaggerator. And Paul, we want to see
- 9:47Speaker 3: you on the comedy night.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Okay, I'm uh uh I'll laugh my way to the stage. Okay,
