- 0:26Speaker 1: massively disappointing game. loser on Sunday at home against the Raiders.
- 0:33Speaker 1: It felt like you stole one on the road that
- 0:36Speaker 1: you deserve to win against Baltimore, but as an 8.5-point underdog,
- 0:39Speaker 1: you went and did so much heavy lifting to limit
- 0:42Speaker 1: Lamar and Derrick Henry to rally in the second half,
- 0:47Speaker 1: and you just gave it back on Sunday with the
- 0:51Speaker 1: loss at home to the Raiders where you blew an
- 0:53Speaker 1: 11-point lead in the second half. four turnovers in the
- 0:57Speaker 1: fourth quarter, which is just unfathomable. It is impossible to
- 1:02Speaker 1: win an NFL game when you turn the ball over
- 1:04Speaker 1: four times in the fourth quarter. It should go without saying.
- 1:07Speaker 1: And Kellen Moore met with reporters on Monday to sort
- 1:10Speaker 1: of recap the game after having the opportunity to let
- 1:13Speaker 1: it marinate, digest, watch the film, and kind of talk
- 1:18Speaker 1: about the emotion of losing a game like that.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that was one thing for me, just
- 1:24Speaker 2: the emotions of that game. There's a lot of the
- 1:27Speaker 2: rhythm and stuff. But I think we all have to
- 1:31Speaker 2: step away from that at times, from time to time.
- 1:33Speaker 2: We all have to do a better job of that.
- 1:35Speaker 2: But we had our opportunities in this game. I think
- 1:38Speaker 2: that's the big thing that you notice is obviously we
- 1:41Speaker 2: weren't able to finish it, but we had opportunities within
- 1:43Speaker 2: even that fourth quarter to get this thing done.
- 1:45Speaker 1: The reason I feel... differently about this loss than I
- 1:49Speaker 1: do in recent years is because this is the first
- 1:51Speaker 1: time I've looked at the Saints as an actual contending team.
- 1:56Speaker 1: One of the years with Derek Carr, I believe it
- 1:58Speaker 1: was 24. Similarly, they lost a game at home early
- 2:07Speaker 1: in the season to the Giants.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Maybe it was 20.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I'm trying to find it right now. Forgive me. I'm
- 2:11Speaker 1: doing this kind of off the top of my head
- 2:12Speaker 1: because I hadn't thought about this in a long time.
- 2:14Speaker 1: But I think it was 2024 where they lost a
- 2:16Speaker 1: home game to the Giants where they had the game won.
- 2:20Speaker 1: And it was one of those where you look back
- 2:21Speaker 1: and you go, that's that's the type of game that
- 2:23Speaker 1: when you lose a game like that, it's you look
- 2:27Speaker 1: back at the end of the season.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Oh, here.
- 2:29Speaker 1: No, here it was. It was it was 2021. Forgive me.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So it was the first year after Breeze's after Breeze's retirement.
- 2:37Speaker 1: And of course, that was the year where they started
- 2:39Speaker 1: at the fantastic start to the season. Jameis was doing well.
- 2:42Speaker 1: There were five and two at the start. and then
- 2:44Speaker 1: he tore his ACL. But they lost an overtime game
- 2:46Speaker 1: to the Giants where they led by two scores in
- 2:48Speaker 1: the fourth quarter and gagged it away, went to overtime,
- 2:51Speaker 1: and lost. And those are the types of games where,
- 2:56Speaker 1: and the Saints that year finished 9-8 and just missed
- 2:59Speaker 1: the playoffs. And that's what I fear for this team.
- 3:03Speaker 1: And I wouldn't normally bring this up, wouldn't have brought
- 3:06Speaker 1: this up in recent years for New Orleans because we
- 3:08Speaker 1: know they weren't a contending team. They were bad. They
- 3:10Speaker 1: were not a contender. They were, despite what the franchise
- 3:14Speaker 1: might have fancied themselves as. With Derek Carr, they were
- 3:16Speaker 1: never going to be a contending team, so it really
- 3:18Speaker 1: didn't matter. You were trying to develop young players and
- 3:21Speaker 1: look toward the future. At least that's the way I
- 3:23Speaker 1: was sort of approached it, and certainly last year. But
- 3:27Speaker 1: this is a team that I think, with Tyler Shuck,
- 3:30Speaker 1: went into this offseason with the approach that they were
- 3:32Speaker 1: investing in their shortcomings to try to win. It's why
- 3:37Speaker 1: they were, look, you could look at New Orleans a
- 3:38Speaker 1: year ago, they were poor, they were one of the
- 3:41Speaker 1: worst teams in the NFL running the football. Well, they
- 3:44Speaker 1: got David Edwards. They spent the money on Travis Aitken.
- 3:48Speaker 1: They feel like, okay, we think Tyler Shuck could be
- 3:50Speaker 1: our franchise. Great. You go draft Jordan Tyson. You brought
- 3:56Speaker 1: Devon Bailey in a year ago. You draft Oscar Delp.
- 3:59Speaker 1: You bring in Noah Fant. You went and got him weapons.
- 4:01Speaker 1: You got him protection and weapons to say, let's see
- 4:03Speaker 1: what this looks like. And so for the first time,
- 4:06Speaker 1: it really feels like they're making a move to be
- 4:08Speaker 1: a contender. And I don't think this team is a contender.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Super Bowl contender or even an NFC contender. But I
- 4:15Speaker 1: do believe they are capable of being a playoff team
- 4:17Speaker 1: and winning a bad division as we've seen. That's been
- 4:18Speaker 1: the point all along. Can they go 9-8 and win
- 4:20Speaker 1: a bad division? I mean, the Panthers won the division
- 4:23Speaker 1: last year at 8-9 with a losing record. If the
- 4:25Speaker 1: Saints win nine games, I mean, you've seen the first
- 4:28Speaker 1: three weeks of this NFL season with this division. You
- 4:30Speaker 1: get to nine, it certainly feels like you're going to
- 4:32Speaker 1: win this division at nine. And that's why you look
- 4:34Speaker 1: at a game like the one against the Raiders or
- 4:37Speaker 1: And I can even stomach the loss to Detroit because
- 4:39Speaker 1: your undoing early, digging that deficit, was your fault. Now,
- 4:43Speaker 1: you were brilliant in the second half after the back-to-back
- 4:47Speaker 1: turnovers to start the third quarter, but those were Tyler
- 4:49Speaker 1: Shuck's turnovers. Those were things he did. This is one
- 4:55Speaker 1: of those where the undoing is just hard to stomach.
- 5:00Speaker 1: The four turnovers in the fourth quarter blowing an 11-point lead.
- 5:03Speaker 1: when it felt like you had it there for the
- 5:05Speaker 1: taking to go to 2-1, lead the division, and then
- 5:08Speaker 1: you're going to have an emotional Monday night football game
- 5:09Speaker 1: a week from tonight against Atlanta Falcons, and then you
- 5:12Speaker 1: start to look forward ahead. Minnesota is still a little
- 5:16Speaker 1: bit of an unknown to me right now. Kyler Murray
- 5:19Speaker 1: had the concussion week one, was it a dozen plays,
- 5:22Speaker 1: 16 plays into his first start. Then he comes back.
- 5:28Speaker 1: And then you go to the Giants who are going
- 5:29Speaker 1: to be without Jackson Dart. We'll talk about them in
- 5:31Speaker 1: a moment. Then you go to Paris to play Pittsburgh,
- 5:34Speaker 1: who was so inept offensively the first two weeks, and
- 5:36Speaker 1: then they beat the Bengals on Sunday. You know, what
- 5:41Speaker 1: are they? And I guess my point is there's opportunity here.
- 5:47Speaker 1: But the Saints team, I think, is still learning with
- 5:49Speaker 1: a young coach and a young roster how to win
- 5:51Speaker 1: football games, like how to close. When you lead by
- 5:54Speaker 1: 11 at home, late in the third quarter, you have
- 6:00Speaker 1: to finish that game. And they didn't. And that's why
- 6:02Speaker 1: it's so massively disappointing that it finished the way it did,
- 6:06Speaker 1: because it was a game you were expected to win,
- 6:07Speaker 1: you were at home, you were leading by two scores late,
- 6:10Speaker 1: and you blew it. It is notable, though, that a
- 6:14Speaker 1: couple of the Saints opponents coming up had some really
- 6:18Speaker 1: impactful news here on Monday. We'll start with the Giants,
- 6:22Speaker 1: because as I mentioned, in week six, the Saints are
- 6:24Speaker 1: going to New York. You have these back-to-back-to-back home games
- 6:27Speaker 1: with Raiders, Falcons, Vikings, and then you go to New York.
- 6:30Speaker 1: So a week ago, the Giants lost Jackson Dart for
- 6:33Speaker 1: the season with a knee injury. It's very unfortunate, but
- 6:36Speaker 1: they have Jameis Winston there as their backup. It's why
- 6:38Speaker 1: he was there. He's a proven starter in the NFL.
- 6:41Speaker 1: We all know the Jameis story. Big plays, he'll make
- 6:45Speaker 1: the wow plays. He's just a turnover machine. That's what
- 6:48Speaker 1: he's been his whole career. It's what he'll be in
- 6:49Speaker 1: New York. But today, John Harbaugh talked about, they traded Jameis.
- 6:56Speaker 1: with the Vikings for J.J. McCarthy, the former number 10
- 6:58Speaker 1: overall pick, which traded to the Giants for a fifth rounder.
- 7:02Speaker 1: So the Giants now have Jameis and J.J. as their
- 7:06Speaker 1: two quarterbacks, two former first-round picks who have kind of
- 7:09Speaker 1: been now cast-offs to see what they can be. And
- 7:12Speaker 1: here was Harbaugh talking about the trade for McCarthy.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Well, we've been talking about it ever since I think
- 7:17Speaker 3: Jackson got hurt that we would need to add quarterback, quarterbacks.
- 7:21Speaker 3: That's part of the process. We've been turning over every stone.
- 7:25Speaker 3: This was an opportunity that kind of came up and
- 7:27Speaker 3: able to finish the deal off this morning. Really glad,
- 7:31Speaker 3: really happy, very excited to add J.J. McCarthy. I think
- 7:34Speaker 3: he's a strong young quarterback, has some experience in the
- 7:39Speaker 3: National Football League, obviously was a very high draft pick,
- 7:42Speaker 3: very talented player, and is going to make us a
- 7:44Speaker 3: stronger football team. So excited about it, think it makes
- 7:47Speaker 3: us better.
- 7:47Speaker 1: There's part of me that respects Minnesota's decision to cut bait.
- 7:51Speaker 1: You know, there is the... the sunk cost fallacy where
- 7:58Speaker 1: effectively at some point when you recognize like this is
- 8:02Speaker 1: not going to work, move on. Don't continue to invest
- 8:05Speaker 1: resources into something that you know is not going to work.
- 8:07Speaker 1: So if Minnesota used the 10th pick on this guy
- 8:11Speaker 1: and they realize he is not going to be a
- 8:13Speaker 1: starting quarterback in this league and you can recoup an asset,
- 8:17Speaker 1: I get it. And it's interesting for Minnesota as well
- 8:19Speaker 1: because their starting quarterback right now is one of those
- 8:22Speaker 1: guys on the flip side, who's Kyler Murray. who was
- 8:25Speaker 1: the number one overall pick and got a $ 200 million
- 8:27Speaker 1: deal from Arizona. And then they ship them up to Minnesota. So, um,
- 8:31Speaker 1: in a very similar move, I am one of those
- 8:34Speaker 1: that kind of firmly believes that teams give up too
- 8:36Speaker 1: early on these top quarterbacks. I think Sam Darnold is
- 8:38Speaker 1: a great example of that. He just won a super bowl.
- 8:40Speaker 1: He won 14 games in Minnesota. He's very clearly a
- 8:42Speaker 1: capable starting quarterback in the NFL. You don't think the jets,
- 8:45Speaker 1: which is they could have a do over and have
- 8:47Speaker 1: Sam Darnold back. Um, Baker Mayfield's a great example of that,
- 8:50Speaker 1: who you don't think Cleveland wishes they could have a
- 8:52Speaker 1: do-over with Baker and have him back in Cleveland. But
- 8:56Speaker 1: time will tell what may happen with J.J. McCarthy, but
- 8:58Speaker 1: it's notable because the Saints will be up in New
- 9:00Speaker 1: York here in just a few weeks. Also of note
- 9:03Speaker 1: for the Giants, really disappointing news, is that their great
- 9:06Speaker 1: edge rusher Brian Burns, who was second in the NFL
- 9:08Speaker 1: in sacks last year behind only Myles Garrett, he tore
- 9:11Speaker 1: his ACL. He's done for the season. for a Saints
- 9:15Speaker 1: offensive line that may not have Kelvin Banks back when
- 9:18Speaker 1: they go to the Giants. The Giants' best pass rusher
- 9:22Speaker 1: isn't going to be there as Brian Burns is done
- 9:25Speaker 1: for the year. So it's not anything that I think
- 9:28Speaker 1: should be in any way celebrated, but it is certainly
- 9:30Speaker 1: newsworthy when a player of that caliber is lost. Now,
- 9:33Speaker 1: the other thing that we have to mention as well
- 9:35Speaker 1: as it pertains to the Saints is they will play
- 9:38Speaker 1: twice against Tampa Bay. Now, they don't play Tampa until
- 9:42Speaker 1: later in the season, But Baker Mayfield is going to
- 9:45Speaker 1: be out with a thumb injury, as Todd Bowles disclosed.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Give us the update on Baker. We understand that there
- 9:51Speaker 1: was no ligament or tendon damage.
- 9:52Speaker 3: What does that mean in terms of how much time.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Has been given?
- 9:55Speaker 3: Yeah, it's consistent with everything we thought it was, dislocation.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Right now, we're probably talking a minimum.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Of three weeks.
- 10:01Speaker 1: A minimum of three? Yes. So thumb dislocation, minimum of
- 10:06Speaker 1: three weeks. The Bucs are already 0-3, and as we've mentioned,
- 10:09Speaker 1: 2% of teams in the NFL that start 0-3 have
- 10:12Speaker 1: ever made the playoffs. None have ever won a Super Bowl.
- 10:14Speaker 1: So really, the Bucs are likely cooked. They're 0-3, and
- 10:17Speaker 1: now they don't have Baker. The Saints don't play Tampa
- 10:20Speaker 1: until December. They play in Tampa on December 20th, and
- 10:23Speaker 1: then the final game of the regular season is the
- 10:25Speaker 1: Saints-Bucks in the Dome. So Baker will be back by then,
- 10:30Speaker 1: but by then the Bucks season likely will be over.
