- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset, coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy. Into the world.
- 0:21So welcome to the coop and let's start your day off in a
- 0:24fantastic way. Hey everybody, good morning from
- 0:29the chicken coop. So let's talk about leaving
- 0:32things for later. We all do it, we all say it, we
- 0:35all understand it, but I'd like to give you a little reminder
- 0:39about later. And later is a very tricky
- 0:43subject, because yes, there are. Times when you say.
- 0:46Well, that's on my schedule for later and that's not what I'm
- 0:49talking about. I'm not talking about things
- 0:51that are scheduled. I'm talking more about the
- 0:55things that we know we want to do, but we don't prioritize
- 1:00them. And the other day I was working
- 1:03with a client and every so often people will get stuck.
- 1:07And just so everyone knows when you're listening to this, I am
- 1:10full blown in the middle of doing chores this morning.
- 1:13So I I'm doing this while I'm doing chores with you.
- 1:16So you will hear the background noise of this because I do not
- 1:20have voice isolation on for this call.
- 1:24So you will hear everything just like you normally do.
- 1:26It's just I'm not doing chores. I'm usually done, but it's very
- 1:30early and I'm trying to get to the garden before I have to go
- 1:35out and do some other chores today and it gets too damn hot.
- 1:37So we're doing chores together. Anyway, back to this.
- 1:41So one of the things that was really important for me is to
- 1:45understand her level of commitment to certain things
- 1:49that she was working on. So every so often I will jump on
- 1:52a call with a client when they're really, really stuck
- 1:55about why they're not getting more and more things done and
- 2:00you know, important things, things that we know she wants to
- 2:03inherently do, but she's just not getting them done.
- 2:06So we jump on a Zoom call and I will whiteboard with them
- 2:10certain things that I know I'll make them give me all the
- 2:14categories of their life. And then we start to talk about
- 2:16the categories and then we start to talk about levels of
- 2:19commitment and we go through the whole thing.
- 2:22And there was this major distinction in the process of
- 2:24this because while everything, when she you talk to her,
- 2:28everything is always, Oh no, no, this is super important.
- 2:31It's super important. It's not as though she's rating
- 2:34them with numbers and saying, oh, this is a 10 or this is a
- 2:38nine and then this is a 7 or this is a six.
- 2:41So once we started diving into that, we were really able to
- 2:44understand why some things were just being left behind.
- 2:48And, and that's, that's the, the crazy part about all of this is
- 2:51that when stuff starts to get left behind, you look at it and
- 2:55you go, well, I want to do it. There's no question.
- 2:57I want, I want it. So the reason is what am I
- 3:01doing? Why am I not following through?
- 3:03Why am I not taking the, the, the time to do what I said I
- 3:06needed to do or wanted to do? And the big thing comes down.
- 3:11It's just not at the hierarchy of where you want it to be.
- 3:14I mean, that's the truth. If you go back and you really
- 3:16start measuring things about how important something is to you,
- 3:20you're going to start to see that ultimately a big part of
- 3:24the reason that you are where you are is because it's just not
- 3:29a high enough priority. And that high enough priority is
- 3:33such a big deal. I mean, it is such a big deal
- 3:36because once you start to recognize, wait a minute, I said
- 3:40this was really important to me. But once I started using numbers
- 3:43instead of words, everything changed.
- 3:46So when you start to rate something like for instance,
- 3:48when I was on this call with her and we were working through it,
- 3:52she rated something as an 8.5. Now you might be laughing, OK,
- 3:57somebody actually said 8.5, yes, but this is what it's all about,
- 4:008.5. And then the another one was
- 4:03like a 10. So as soon as she said a ten, I
- 4:06knew even that little smidge of a difference, even that little
- 4:09teeny weeny smidge of a difference makes a huge
- 4:13difference to her attention and focus in an outcome on
- 4:16something. So I was able to say, do you see
- 4:19right here, this is what I'm talking about.
- 4:21This is the difference. This is where we have the
- 4:23biggest struggle and, and right away it was like, oh, there's an
- 4:27understanding with that. Yup, I see.
- 4:30So you either have to change your approach so you get stuck
- 4:33out of later or recognize that you're just going to keep
- 4:37repeating the same pattern over and over and over again and
- 4:40getting frustrated. And here's the part of this
- 4:42that's so challenging is that we recognize all of this.
- 4:48We start saying, I'll do it later, I'll do it later.
- 4:50But you know what happens later? You lose interest and then one
- 4:54day turns into two turns into 10 and a night turns into another
- 4:57night and on before you know it, somebody's grown up and you've
- 5:01missed out on stuff. Life keeps going by and you
- 5:04don't want to get to that point where you're like, I don't even
- 5:07have a chance to do this anymore because now I physically can't
- 5:11do this for whatever reason, God forbid, or something else
- 5:15happens. Or you just say, oh, you know
- 5:17what, now this person person doesn't even want to take the
- 5:20trip with me or do those things. So it's really important to
- 5:23remember. Don't put it off and understand
- 5:27the the, the relativeness of doing something later or making
- 5:31sure something's a priority. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:34you have a blessed day and I'll see you tomorrow.
- 5:36Bye.
