Latest / Brainwaves / Tron: Ares with The Movie Guy
Transcript
- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Two Shot
- 0:11Tuesday. We are extremely lucky and
- 0:15honored to have once again the movie guy, Rob Peetz in studio
- 0:19to discuss Tron Aries, a movie Rob, you and I saw at the time
- 0:24of this recording not long ago, and we both have ideas and
- 0:28opinions on this thing. Jay, this is 1 you didn't see,
- 0:31but I expect that you'll be chiming in with some other
- 0:34knowledge, maybe from the comic world.
- 0:36We don't know. I don't want to spoil anything.
- 0:39Let's have our first shot and then let's get into Tron Aries
- 0:43in theaters as we speak. Mike, how would you like me to
- 0:46kick this off? I'm doing a non alcoholic show
- 0:49tonight. So in spirit of Tron though,
- 0:52I've got some kool-aid squeezy in one of these containers here.
- 0:57So kool-aid squeezy for me. Over to you, Barry.
- 1:00OK, well I'm definitely enjoying a little bit of alcohol tonight.
- 1:03It is the 12 year Bushmills. It's a favorite.
- 1:07And Robert, what have you got? What concoction?
- 1:11I think I'm having the same thing I had last time, which is
- 1:13the ginger ale flavored water. Nice Which?
- 1:15Is OK, quite tasty. So I got.
- 1:16To try it. All right, yeah, it's good I'm
- 1:18the only one boozing. Cheers.
- 1:21Tension. OK, before we get started, can I
- 1:27just say this because I think it's well worth mentioning.
- 1:30You know, you were on two weeks ago, Rob hour to talk about 1
- 1:34battle after another, our most viewed episode in history.
- 1:38I'm just going to say already. So people are excited to hear
- 1:42you and Barry talk about movies on the YouTube channel and and
- 1:45in our regular podcasting platform.
- 1:47So we rushed you back here is basically what's happening.
- 1:49So before your rates started going up?
- 1:51Right. Yeah.
- 1:53I don't have a lot of experience with Tron.
- 1:54I saw the original Tron, I have no memory of it.
- 1:57I saw the second Tron, I have very little memory of it.
- 2:00It's not. It's this movie that doesn't
- 2:02stick with me, so I'm, well, I don't.
- 2:05Let let me just pop right in straight away and say I think
- 2:08that's the case for most people. Tron Tron in general, is, is a,
- 2:13an interesting concept. And I'm talking about the
- 2:16original movie, The the follow up movie from 2010 or whatever
- 2:19it was. It's an interesting concept, but
- 2:22it's never quite been executed all that well.
- 2:24The the story itself has always been a little wishy washy,
- 2:28convoluted, not that great. So let's just say that this
- 2:31movie continues that that sort of exercise in somewhat dull
- 2:36storytelling. But all the movies have in
- 2:39common. The the one thing they have in
- 2:41common is that they all look great.
- 2:42They all have a pretty interesting soundtrack and
- 2:45that's where this movie kind of is equal to the other movies,
- 2:48so. And they all are Jeff Bridges in
- 2:50one form or another. Yeah, yeah, now.
- 2:54Ham fist, ham fisted in this case, but yeah.
- 2:57Yeah, our the the first red flag might be our lead is what's his
- 3:03name? Jared Leto.
- 3:05Jared Leto I got to think and this occurred to me and you can
- 3:10tell me what you thought, but when you get down on the list to
- 3:13go, the lead of our movie is going to be.
- 3:15Jared Leto, that's. Usually the first sign of
- 3:19trouble. Not that he's a terrible actor,
- 3:21but just that his movies tend to go nowhere.
- 3:24I'm thinking of Morbius. I'm thinking of just about every
- 3:28Jared. He wasn't the the well received
- 3:30Joker in the Suicide Squad. Like he sort of peeked at Fight
- 3:34Club. Well, on on the way to the
- 3:36theater, I mentioned that that was, you know, the the thing I
- 3:39was looking least forward to was seeing Jared Leto in any movie
- 3:42at all. Not a fan.
- 3:43I don't really care either way. I think he's had a couple of
- 3:46good movies where he's just his, his blank expression has suited
- 3:49the part. So it worked.
- 3:51But I don't, I don't know that Barry really understood that and
- 3:53I sort of tried to explain it to him, but it doesn't really
- 3:56matter. The fact of the the fact of the
- 3:58matter is with this particular movie is that this is a passion
- 4:00project. It turns out I had no idea going
- 4:03into this. I had to read about it
- 4:04afterwards. This is a Jared Leto.
- 4:06I noticed that he had a credit as producer on the movie when
- 4:09the movie started. So I went and looked into this.
- 4:12This is a Jared Leto passion project there.
- 4:14There was a whole other movie that was supposed to be made
- 4:17instead about about 10 years ago that never took off.
- 4:21I think Tomorrow World or Tomorrowland or whatever.
- 4:24That movie with George Clooney, George Clooney, that that kind
- 4:26of failed and it scared Disney. So they pulled back on the next
- 4:29legacy, Tron legacy sort of continuation with Olivia Wilde
- 4:33and whoever, Sam Wise or Sam Sam Wise, Genji.
- 4:37Yes. Oh yeah, sounds right.
- 4:38It's best when there's a Hobbit in it.
- 4:40The guy's name was Sam. I don't I don't know whatever
- 4:42that guy. And I guess somewhere down the
- 4:44line, Jared Leto tried to get this thing made and he ended up,
- 4:48you know, I think that he was directly involved in getting 9
- 4:50Inch Nails to score the thing because he's a bit of a
- 4:52musician, quote UN quote himself.
- 4:55And that 30 seconds from. Mars is that that's Jared Leto's
- 4:57band, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 4:59Sure, let's not promote it. OK, Liam.
- 5:01Wow, say OK, well I'm going to jump in here because both of you
- 5:04guys are are clearly drinking the haterade when it comes to
- 5:08Jared Leto and that's fine and you're entitled to your opinion.
- 5:10I am a defender of Mr. Leto. I don't have a problem with him.
- 5:14I think he's fine. Requiem for a Dream, amazing.
- 5:18Blade Runner 2049, he was great in that too.
- 5:21You guys mentioned the ones that were.
- 5:22He was awful. I never saw Morbius thankfully,
- 5:24but I've heard that that's terrible.
- 5:27I mean, how do you phrase when you say I don't don't have a
- 5:29problem with him, he's. Fine, he's fine.
- 5:32And also like he's a handsome guy versus, you know, and
- 5:35that's, you know, you, you want someone who's half decent
- 5:38looking, you know, in a movie, presumably.
- 5:42But Rob, you had a different take on it.
- 5:44You felt his eyes were too close together.
- 5:46What? Do you?
- 5:46I feel like what do you. Go into that a little bit
- 5:48further. Unpack that a bit.
- 5:51I just think he's got bizarre eyes and I think that he's a
- 5:54strange looking cat. I know that he's probably
- 5:56considered somewhat attractive in in modeling circles, but.
- 6:00I think a lot of, I think a. Lot of models look weird
- 6:03sometimes, you know, and I think he's one of them.
- 6:05I've always said that he reminds me of of the what if Macaulay
- 6:10Culkin grew up as that as that kid and and still look the same.
- 6:15That's how Jared Leto looks. He looks like a grown up kid
- 6:18version, like, whereas whereas Macaulay Culkin doesn't look the
- 6:21same anymore. He looks kind of bizarre.
- 6:23He's, you know, he's, he's older.
- 6:24Jared Leno has retained that that visual.
- 6:27OK, OK, This is this is the positivity podcast is something
- 6:32not a. Fan, I don't care either way to
- 6:34be honest with you. I just don't go see his movies
- 6:37generally. So I'm being kind of ham again,
- 6:39ham fisted into watching him in this movie.
- 6:41Now, let's let's just say straight up, he wasn't terrible
- 6:45in this movie because the movie is about he's playing on a a
- 6:48program and a program is generally a fairly wooden thing.
- 6:51So he matched fairly well. I would say that that overall he
- 6:56was OK as as this particular character.
- 6:59Nice. Well you know what?
- 7:01This is what happens. I have to say that Tron, as I
- 7:05was saying, I don't know it very well.
- 7:07I don't have any experience with it.
- 7:10How well do you need to have known the 1st 2 movies to make?
- 7:12Sense of this one. I don't think you really do.
- 7:15I mean, honestly, the the there's a there's a big
- 7:17exposition dump at the very beginning of this movie that
- 7:19sort of very quickly explains a bunch of the things that have
- 7:22happened in the last two movies. But I will say that it kind of
- 7:25ignores the second movie, although it does does kind of
- 7:28touch on it, but it overall kind of ignore ignores the second
- 7:32movie, which is weird because the second movie actually was a
- 7:35continuation of the first story. This is kind of like a semi
- 7:40reboot continuation. It's it's odd.
- 7:43I don't really understand it why they didn't just continue the
- 7:46second movie. There was a good plot line set
- 7:48up. So basically they remade the
- 7:50second movie. Now, now, Barry, who's been with
- 7:53us the whole time except that we're a video podcast and people
- 7:58may have noticed you sidle away, Barry.
- 8:00So let's pause before we go into our second shot and why don't
- 8:02you let all of our audience know exactly what's been happening?
- 8:06Were you going to sign up for the Jared Leto Fan Club while we
- 8:08were gone? I think that's got to be.
- 8:10I did that, but I also at the same time it took out some
- 8:13delicious jerk chicken from the oven that is dinner.
- 8:16Tonight. You can't let that stuff sitting
- 8:17around or, you know, be in the oven too long.
- 8:20It's going to dry out, Jay. Yeah, it's a podcast that you
- 8:23can enjoy on your break, but not the podcast you can make your
- 8:25chicken too, because. That is a good point.
- 8:28All right, sailing. Points.
- 8:30Let's move to shot #2 then we're going to move away from some of
- 8:32the Jared Leto hating, and we're going to move into some of the
- 8:34other aspects of the Tron franchise as a whole.
- 8:38So Barry, why don't you kick us off and shot him?
- 8:40OK, And there's no hating on Mr. Leto for myself, Just he's fine.
- 8:44I want to make as you say. I want to make.
- 8:46That clear? I'm just a different he's.
- 8:48I don't care either way. Anyway, yeah, there is some
- 8:50things I want to talk about in this movie.
- 8:51But first, a shot of 12 year Bushmills.
- 8:54Man oh man, it's delicious. Roberts, what about yourself?
- 8:58Same old, same old fake ginger ale.
- 9:00And Jay, you're keeping it clean.
- 9:01Over there fruit punch. OK, cheers.
- 9:05Cheers. Chin, chin.
- 9:09Now, Rob, you mentioned the soundtrack, and this is very
- 9:11much worth pointing out. Nine Inch Nails did an original
- 9:15soundtrack for Tron Aries. It was so good.
- 9:19The soundtrack, it's almost like a character in the movie, like
- 9:23truly it helps to drive the action forward, even when
- 9:26there's long like longish sequences of just kind of racing
- 9:29through the grid. This music is building.
- 9:32It's it's helping moving the story along.
- 9:34I thought it was fantastic. That was definitely a highlight
- 9:37for me. I don't know how you felt, Rob.
- 9:39Yeah, same. Because it it kept the movie
- 9:41consistently upbeat and had some really cool sort of interesting
- 9:45sound effects. So it's 9 Inch Nails with
- 9:47Atticus Ross, I believe. So they've done a bunch of
- 9:49soundtracks together over the years and David Fincher's stuff
- 9:52and things like that. So it was.
- 9:54Yeah, it was an interesting mix of, you know, electronica.
- 9:58It's mostly always all electronica, but it does call
- 10:01back to the old days as well. The the original soundtrack was
- 10:03done by Wendy Carlos who was responsible for the a couple of
- 10:07Kubrick soundtracks which were the Clockwork Orange soundtrack
- 10:10and the Shining soundtrack. But she was a pioneer in
- 10:14electronics back in the late 60s into the 70s and 80s.
- 10:19Now is this like? Is this like, you know, Queen
- 10:23doing Flash Gordon? Is it like that pervasive?
- 10:26Not at all like that. There's not, it's not, it's not
- 10:29song after song, OK? It's an actual sound after.
- 10:31Song, but it is a is a full instrumental soundtrack.
- 10:34The last movie Legacy was done by by Daft Punk and and they
- 10:38that was a great soundtrack. So the whole movie kind of took
- 10:41on that vibe as well. Yeah, and I guess that's one
- 10:43thing we could say about the trilogy, is that the sound.
- 10:46So I mean, for Better, for worse is, you know, a very key
- 10:51component. It helps to move the story along
- 10:53when the story, as you pointed out earlier, Rob, is not the
- 10:56most exciting and it's not the most groundbreaking.
- 10:58We've seen this kind of before. But having that, you know,
- 11:03robust soundtrack certainly does help.
- 11:05Let's just say, let's just say the story is like a combination
- 11:08of Jurassic Park 2, the one where all the dinosaurs go into
- 11:12the into the city meets like a Kaiju movie meets Terminator 2
- 11:16or Terminator 3. You combine those two movies,
- 11:19you got this movie, you know, So it's, it's, it's pretty basic,
- 11:24pretty basic stuff. But it looks at fantastic in
- 11:27IMAX too. We should say to our audience,
- 11:30if anyone is considering going to see it in the theater, see it
- 11:33in IMAX because it is the. Sequences were great, amazing.
- 11:36It was a beautifully, beautifully put together film.
- 11:38At times there were some really cool action set pieces.
- 11:41There was a great I think my favorite part was kind of the
- 11:44middle section of the movie. The first section kind of was a
- 11:47little, I wouldn't say slow, but it was a little there.
- 11:50There's really not much character development in this
- 11:52movie either. So you're kind of just, it's the
- 11:53way modern movies are made. They throw you in, they they
- 11:56show you who these people are. They give them, I don't know,
- 11:58like a like a minute long scene where they kind of establish
- 12:03their their their reasoning for being who they are and what they
- 12:06want to be. And then they kind of move
- 12:08forward and you just that just happens, right?
- 12:10So in this case, Jared Leto is is this kind of antagonist
- 12:14initially that sort of very quickly turns into a protagonist
- 12:18and kind of heart of Gold becomes, yeah, right away.
- 12:21I could tell right away that this was, he was not going to
- 12:23remain gold. Yeah, kind of a bad guy.
- 12:26Yeah, how could he? He is the Terminator in this
- 12:28movie for the most part, right? The good Terminator.
- 12:32The good Terminator, and he has a bit of a sense of humor in
- 12:34this movie as well. So for somebody like me who has
- 12:39now forgotten the first Tron, take us through Tron.
- 12:42Is there kind of an overarching thing you can say about Tron?
- 12:45Like, well, there is what? Does I?
- 12:47Yeah, I saw. I rewatched the original Tron
- 12:50just a couple of days ago. I didn't get very far.
- 12:52I was sharing this with Rob via text earlier.
- 12:55I got about 25 minutes in and fell asleep.
- 12:58Now, that's not really a knock on the movie.
- 12:59It's also, it was Thanksgiving and I had pigged out, so you
- 13:03know. That doesn't help, but it
- 13:04doesn't help. What I learned is from watching
- 13:08the first movie is the the company Ncon, which is like
- 13:11this, you know, might as well be Google.
- 13:14Like they're the ones who are responsible for creating the
- 13:16video game where this grid exists.
- 13:20Jeff Bridges character is. Jeff Bridges character was.
- 13:22The original leader of of he. Was but he wasn't the CEO.
- 13:25There was a there was a guy above him who's like the owner
- 13:27of the company. So when Tron legacy was like.
- 13:29VP of HR, Was that what he was? What was?
- 13:31I don't know. He was the guy that created.
- 13:33He was the guy that created the the the program the original
- 13:36game, correct? He worked on a.
- 13:38Developer. Yeah, but the the guy at the
- 13:40head of the table of of Encom, as we learn now in in Tron
- 13:44Aries, it's his grandson who's now it's the same family.
- 13:49That's about the only through line that I could pick up from
- 13:52the original you guys. It's the same family.
- 13:55Yeah, it's not right, but it's OK.
- 13:57It doesn't matter. But it is right.
- 13:58It's there. There's a different grandfather.
- 14:00Different. Yeah, but it's a different
- 14:01company. There was.
- 14:03The same company? Encon.
- 14:03Encon. No, I know, I know ENCOM is the
- 14:06company that Jeff Bridges founded with the video game, but
- 14:09there was a there was AI, can't remember the name of the company
- 14:12DuPont or I don't remember the name.
- 14:13I think it's DuPont. It's not DuPont it.
- 14:15Was Anheuser Busch. No, it's not that.
- 14:17Basically, Dillinger Dillinger Industries industries were the.
- 14:22The competitors when the 1st. Competition to the competition
- 14:26and they've always been trying to get one up.
- 14:29That's true. Is sort of the antagonist in
- 14:31this movie is the Dillinger family not not the income family
- 14:37I. Invite you to rewatch the 1st 20
- 14:39minutes of Tron. It'll it'll.
- 14:41Before you fall asleep. I just saw it like, you know, 48
- 14:44hours ago, so fresh on his mind. It's, it's the same family that
- 14:47that grandfather of Encon passed the torch to the grandson.
- 14:52And he's the guy. He's that little, that nerd guy.
- 14:55He's not. Yeah.
- 14:58He's, he's like the tattooed, sort of skinnier guy who wants
- 15:01to be like a, you know, the younger CEO he took over from
- 15:06from his mother to Gillian Anderson, so.
- 15:08No, there's. A picture.
- 15:09There's a picture of the guy, the grandfather.
- 15:11It's the same actor. Very.
- 15:12You guys were in the same movie, right?
- 15:14You guys are in the same movie. Just confusion.
- 15:16Her but I. It's Dillinger.
- 15:17It's it's Dillinger. It's.
- 15:19Forgettable is what I'm hearing. It's the other.
- 15:21It's the other company. Some family feud pulling people
- 15:24together. Only through line through.
- 15:26Tron I don't know but. In Tron Legacy, Killian Murphy
- 15:31plays the relative of the Dillinger Company, so he becomes
- 15:36the leader of Dillinger in the second movie and the third
- 15:38movie. I forgot he was in that.
- 15:40He's gone or whatever and watch 20 Minutes, this other guy, this
- 15:43younger guy, all right with Gillian Anderson.
- 15:46It's that time of the show where we talk about star ratings and,
- 15:51and anything else you might want our audience to know about Tron
- 15:54if you're trying to sell it to them or you don't have to.
- 15:57Barry, we're going to start with you because you did watch 20
- 15:59minutes of the original and then went into Tron or you watched
- 16:03the original after Tron. I I don't know what order you
- 16:07watched them in, but. Well, because I hadn't really
- 16:09seen the original in its entirety.
- 16:10When I mentioned this on my walk home with Rob, he's like, you
- 16:13haven't seen the first Tron. I go, no, not, you know, in a
- 16:16complete piece. And that still hasn't happened
- 16:18because like I said, OK, I only got 20 minutes in.
- 16:20How's Aries? I'll get there.
- 16:22I enjoyed Aries as a visual feast.
- 16:24I thought the music was great. It was a fun time at the movies.
- 16:28It didn't overstay its welcome. But like Rob alluded to, it's
- 16:31not going to grab you too much in in terms of story.
- 16:34And they did. I was happy to see Jeff Bridges,
- 16:36but like also Rob mentioned, they kind of shoehorn him in
- 16:40there. It doesn't make sense that he
- 16:41would be aging. If it's like his image on the
- 16:44grid, why wouldn't they just have him look like he did in the
- 16:4780s? But they don't do that.
- 16:49So the I don't know. It was nice to see you back.
- 16:52He felt like he he was doing some of the hey man and all this
- 16:55sort of like dude isms. Yeah, that was cool.
- 16:57Definitely injected dude isms into it.
- 16:59Yeah, he did. And also they they kind of did
- 17:01explain his aging in the second movie.
- 17:03So they did OK. But they didn't really explain
- 17:05why he was where he was in the third movie.
- 17:08Yeah, I did like the fact there's one spoiler.
- 17:10I think we can share one spoiler, Rob.
- 17:12Jared Leto's character does go to the original grid, so you get
- 17:16to see that in, which I thought was kind of cool.
- 17:19Nice. It was interesting.
- 17:20OK, what's your rating? Let's get a rating.
- 17:23I'm going to go ahead and give it a a solid 3 out of five, A
- 17:273.5 for the soundtrack, though, because 9 inch nails.
- 17:30They really, you know, delivered with this one.
- 17:32So I'm going to say 3.5 because it gets an extra bump for the
- 17:36for the music. Music was fantastic.
- 17:38We'll give it to you. OK, Rob, how about you?
- 17:41You know, oddly, I'm going to agree there's about a three 3.5
- 17:44somewhere in there. It's not a it's not an offensive
- 17:47movie by any means. It was fun to watch, some great
- 17:49action sequences. The music was great overall, and
- 17:53Jared Leto didn't really let me down or anything.
- 17:56He was fine. Once you got past the eyes being
- 17:59too close together, you're able to.
- 18:01Yeah, fine, fine, fine radiates through from both of you
- 18:04gentlemen for Jared go. So let's let's leave it at that.
- 18:08The whole thing was passable. Yeah, Jared gets the win.
- 18:11Jared gets the win on that one. Great.
- 18:12So 3.5, guys, this is our penultimate episode of our fifth
- 18:17season, our second to last episode, Barry.

- 18:29for whatever movie antics you 2 have got cooked up.
- 18:31We can't wait to hear that. Maybe for the bride there.
- 18:34There's a movie called Bride coming up that looks pretty cool

- 18:41And there's Frankenstein. Are they?
- 18:43Coming around sometime, Frankenstein's on Netflix I
- 18:45believe. That's maybe next month.
- 18:47OK, All right. I thought it was.
- 18:48A and Christian Bale. Christian Bale's in Bride.
- 18:51Yeah, he he's he plays Frankenstein.
- 18:54In bride but not. In Monster, yeah.
- 18:56It's kind of like a it looks like a Bonnie and Clyde version
