- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Yukon Football Coaches Show on the
- 0:02Speaker 1: Yukon Sports networt Husky's head back up north to Upstate
- 0:06Speaker 1: New York the JMA Wireless Dome. They'll play Syracuse radio coverage,
- 0:11Speaker 1: beginning with Bob Joyce hosting the Heart Autogroup countdown to
- 0:14Speaker 1: kick off at ten thirty on site, and then Wayne
- 0:18Speaker 1: and Adam and myself for the game broadcast at noon.
- 0:21Speaker 1: So right here on the Yukon Sports Network, be sure
- 0:24Speaker 1: to tune it in as Yukon takes on an acc opponent.
- 0:28Speaker 1: And Jim, I know you don't look ahead, You kind
- 0:31Speaker 1: of stay in the moment. I think the team reflects that,
- 0:33Speaker 1: which is kind of cool. You got to do that obviously,
- 0:37Speaker 1: But this one, this one is meaningful. This is one
- 0:40Speaker 1: of the regional powers in our area. You got to
- 0:44Speaker 1: put them Syracuse BC, and now I think Yukon climbing
- 0:47Speaker 1: into that echelon. This one matters in a big picture
- 0:52Speaker 1: kind of way. I think, well, yeah it does.
- 0:56Speaker 2: And you know, my job is to keep us focused
- 0:58Speaker 2: on what's right in front of us.
- 1:02Speaker 3: But you know, like we're all human, right.
- 1:07Speaker 2: And so as I work to keep these players focused
- 1:11Speaker 2: on this game, and just today's practice and today's meetings.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Minds tend to wander at times. And we know that
- 1:19Speaker 2: this is a team that beat us last year. We
- 1:20Speaker 2: know that it's a team that we recruit against. It's
- 1:23Speaker 2: well we'd like to recruit against, you know. We know
- 1:26Speaker 2: it's a real regional matchup. So while you try as
- 1:29Speaker 2: hard as you can not to overemphasize or underemphasize any
- 1:32Speaker 2: game and stay consistent in your approach, I think that
- 1:35Speaker 2: it's just human nature that you know, your anxiety, your anticipation,
- 1:41Speaker 2: your urgency picks up at certain times. But we always
- 1:45Speaker 2: want to be able to operate at a high level
- 1:47Speaker 2: so that we don't have dips in our season, you know,
- 1:50Speaker 2: So that's always my focus. I don't really talk about
- 1:54Speaker 2: the significance of a game other than our goal is
- 1:57Speaker 2: to go out and play well and win it. But
- 2:00Speaker 2: you know, listen, we're all human, and so some of
- 2:01Speaker 2: that slips in there sometimes. But you're the only one
- 2:05Speaker 2: that I'm going to acknowledge that too. Yeah, you and
- 2:07Speaker 2: all the listeners.
- 2:10Speaker 4: I know, I get you to say something about that.
- 2:13Speaker 3: You got me, You got me.
- 2:15Speaker 4: You didn't want to say anything, but you had to.
- 2:17Speaker 1: I didn't want to start an argument with you, and
- 2:19Speaker 1: I know, I freaking I appreciate you listening an hour
- 2:23Speaker 1: at a time anytime.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Uh. We're going to talk to mel Brown a little
- 2:26Speaker 4: later in the.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Show, and he talks about uh, he talks about the
- 2:30Speaker 1: running back situation and what you got with the committee thing,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and but also he talks about running on turf versus grass.
- 2:39Speaker 3: He likes turf.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And I said to myself, with a guy with that
- 2:43Speaker 1: kind of speed, I understand what about you?
- 2:46Speaker 4: You coached on all the surfaces, what do you what's your.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Take on a game played on you know, artificial stuff
- 2:54Speaker 1: and a game played on regular grass?
- 2:55Speaker 4: How different really is it?
- 2:57Speaker 3: It depends on the grass.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Like if we're play at the Rent, I love the
- 3:02Speaker 2: grass because there's not a better manicured field in all
- 3:07Speaker 2: the football in my opinion than the Rent and what
- 3:11Speaker 2: those guys do down there to keep it just in
- 3:14Speaker 2: tiptop shape. And it doesn't matter if it's you know,
- 3:16Speaker 2: August thirtieth or it's late in November. That place, that
- 3:20Speaker 2: grass is always awesome. But if our players and guys
- 3:23Speaker 2: like no, I want to go inside and play, I'm
- 3:25Speaker 2: go inside and play with them as well, so I
- 3:28Speaker 2: like grass. I just I like it as long as
- 3:31Speaker 2: it's good grass, you know. So I just like good
- 3:34Speaker 2: football on any surface, how about that?
- 3:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm with you.
- 3:37Speaker 1: The one thing about indoor football though, to me, especially
- 3:41Speaker 1: when you're on the road, the home team has the
- 3:43Speaker 1: support of their crowd. Obviously, last year the Orange were
- 3:47Speaker 1: six and one at home. I think they won four
- 3:49Speaker 1: of those games by one score, including one against U Khon.
- 3:53Speaker 4: I think it.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Helps when you got the crowd behind you. Your indoors,
- 3:56Speaker 1: the sound is different. It's harder on your quarterback, thank
- 4:00Speaker 1: the visiting quarterback, because you know it's negative stuff coming
- 4:03Speaker 1: from the stands. It is really a home field advantage,
- 4:07Speaker 1: isn't it to that team that you know plays indoors
- 4:11Speaker 1: when they host a team?
- 4:12Speaker 3: I think so sure.
- 4:13Speaker 2: I mean, just you know, if they have educated fans
- 4:15Speaker 2: with Syracuse fans, are they knowing to cheer? They know
- 4:18Speaker 2: him to be quiet? They know and it's important to
- 4:19Speaker 2: be loud. But I'm gonna tell you this last week
- 4:23Speaker 2: at the Rent, our fans were obnoxious. It was awesome,
- 4:27Speaker 2: And I say obnoxious in a kind and loving and
- 4:30Speaker 2: appreciative way. The rint get is loud, all right, and
- 4:33Speaker 2: it's not an easy place to play. And if we
- 4:35Speaker 2: can keep you know, playing well and get people to
- 4:37Speaker 2: come and support us, it'll be a great place.
- 4:39Speaker 3: But you go to a place like Syracuse.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I think what's important in a game like this is
- 4:43Speaker 2: when you're playing inside, is if you can get a lead,
- 4:45Speaker 2: or if you can have some success running the ball
- 4:48Speaker 2: and not give the opponent too much to cheer about,
- 4:51Speaker 2: or if it's a third and long situation where you
- 4:53Speaker 2: know they're going to get rowdy and get on their feet,
- 4:54Speaker 2: if you can convert and get them to sit down
- 4:56Speaker 2: real quick. Again, we don't pay a lot of attention
- 4:59Speaker 2: to the crowd. That would not be something that would
- 5:01Speaker 2: be beneficial to us. But you know, it's always a
- 5:05Speaker 2: factor when you're on the road. You know, that's why
- 5:07Speaker 2: you practice with crowd noise and things like that. The
- 5:09Speaker 2: best thing you can do on the road is go
- 5:11Speaker 2: play good football and keep them in their seats walking
- 5:14Speaker 2: towards the exits.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Man, no doubt about it.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Yeah, good crowd at the Rent announced over thirty seven places,
- 5:22Speaker 1: pretty full. It sounded good. I like the I really
- 5:25Speaker 1: like the tailgate thing. We get there early.
- 5:27Speaker 2: We need to get the tailgaters in Mike, I know
- 5:31Speaker 2: the stadium earlier, and I'm going to give them another
- 5:33Speaker 2: incentive to come in early. Okay by our band, Like,
- 5:38Speaker 2: our band is outstanding. Okay, our cheer squads are outstanding.
- 5:44Speaker 2: So it's not just about the football game. It's about
- 5:48Speaker 2: college environment and supporting the band and our cheer squads
- 5:53Speaker 2: and our Yale squads and our student body in there.
- 5:57Speaker 2: And it's I know it's fun to sit out there
- 6:00Speaker 2: ol Gate. Look, I mean I haven't tailgated much in
- 6:02Speaker 2: my life, but I think it would be fun.
- 6:04Speaker 3: But the fun is in the in the stands. Man Like,
- 6:08Speaker 3: our band is excellent, excellent.
- 6:11Speaker 2: And as much as our players want the support, and
- 6:13Speaker 2: I think have earned the support, our band earns it too.
- 6:17Speaker 2: So let's get people in the stadium. You can, Can
- 6:20Speaker 2: you bring your drinks in? Maybe we should. You should
- 6:22Speaker 2: start a petition to get a policy where you can
- 6:25Speaker 2: bring outside alcohol in the stadium.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Part of the band.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I got two words on that. One fat chance that's happening.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I like your idea. I do like it. We got
- 6:35Speaker 1: to get them in there. I listen, I talk about
- 6:37Speaker 1: it all the time. Trust me, I'm with you on
- 6:39Speaker 1: that all right, We're gonna take quick break back with
- 6:41Speaker 1: Jim Morriless, the U Coms Football Coaches Show on lear Field.
- 6:48Speaker 5: Husky Pride is in full swing. Academic minds, they're hard
- 6:52Speaker 5: at work and play. As a supporter of all things Husky,
- 6:57Speaker 5: Travelers is proud to sponsor you and it's exciting sports
- 7:01Speaker 5: programs from football.
- 7:04Speaker 4: To basketball, it's a hockey.
- 7:07Speaker 3: We're Husky all the way.
- 7:09Speaker 5: Travelers in Yukon committed to the young people who are
- 7:13Speaker 5: the future of Connecticut.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Listen closely.
- 7:19Speaker 6: Did you hear that that's the sound of employees being productive.
- 7:23Speaker 6: They're so efficient because they partnered with Xerox to manage
- 7:26Speaker 6: workplace technology from advanced printers to automating your workflows to
- 7:30Speaker 6: IT solutions. Our local experts ensure your business run smoothly.

- 7:40Speaker 6: make work work.
- 7:46Speaker 7: The exclusive home of the Huskies is the Yukon Sports
- 7:51Speaker 7: Network from Learfield.
- 7:58Speaker 8: Hear that that's the sound of your life perfectly being perfect,
- 8:07Speaker 8: beating in rhythm to the world you've created. But every
- 8:11Speaker 8: time you drive after drinking, the music gets drowned out.
- 8:18Speaker 8: Your life sounds pretty great. Don't let a buzz ruin it.
- 8:22Speaker 8: Buzz driving is drunk driving. Don't drive buzzed. A message
- 8:25Speaker 8: from Nitsa in the AD Council.
- 8:28Speaker 9: When you're high, you feel different, you think different, you
- 8:31Speaker 9: talk different, you draw different, you listen to music different.
- 8:35Speaker 9: But you probably knew that the problem is you also
- 8:38Speaker 9: drive different, and not in a good way. That's why
- 8:42Speaker 9: driving high is illegal everywhere. So if you're high, just
- 8:46Speaker 9: don't drive. Make a plan to get a sober ride
- 8:49Speaker 9: because if you feel different, you drive different. Brought to
- 8:53Speaker 9: you by Nitza and the AD Council.
- 9:09Speaker 7: The Yukon Football Coaches Show continues on the Yukon Sports Network,
- 9:13Speaker 7: presented by Brown, Payne, DRIs and Scott. Once again, here's
- 9:17Speaker 7: Mike Crispino coming up a little bit later on the
- 9:20Speaker 7: Yukon Football Coaches Show.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Will be talking to mel Brown, the running back and
- 9:24Speaker 1: the defensive back Devon Pringle number two and we're with
- 9:27Speaker 1: Jim Mora on Mike Crispino. I want to talk about
- 9:29Speaker 1: Devon Pringle for a second, coach because interesting guy. He
- 9:33Speaker 1: came from Grand Valley State. Now, a lot of folks
- 9:35Speaker 1: at Yukon football fans are starting to get the idea
- 9:39Speaker 1: that you've got to go out and you got to recruit,
- 9:41Speaker 1: You got to get transfers, you got to improve the
- 9:44Speaker 1: squad every year to keep improving Yukon football. And Devon Pringle,
- 9:49Speaker 1: to me, is an interesting guy. Four years at Grandville,
- 9:51Speaker 1: Grand Valley State, which is on the Lake Michigan up
- 9:55Speaker 1: there in the in the state, and it's a small school,
- 9:59Speaker 1: but they got a pretty good history with football.
- 10:03Speaker 4: It's a Division two thing.
- 10:04Speaker 1: And I'm just curious, when you go looking for people
- 10:07Speaker 1: or when they reach out to you, how do you
- 10:10Speaker 1: approach analyzing what a guy can do for you, how we.
- 10:13Speaker 4: Can help the Yukon Husky football team.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Well, we have a certain profile that we're looking for,
- 10:19Speaker 2: physical and mental, emotional, character wise, so you know, we
- 10:24Speaker 2: kind of put them through our filter and if they're
- 10:26Speaker 2: a fit, then we recruit them hard. Devin was a fit.
- 10:29Speaker 2: You know, he's an experienced guy. He's got the size
- 10:34Speaker 2: that fits within the range that we're looking for. He
- 10:37Speaker 2: can run, he's a great kid, he's a hard worker.
- 10:40Speaker 2: He came very well recommended, you know, as you mentioned Mike,
- 10:44Speaker 2: he comes from what we think is a really good program.
- 10:46Speaker 2: He's going well coached, When you watch the film of him,
- 10:48Speaker 2: you saw good technique work. You saw a guy that
- 10:50Speaker 2: finished that played with confidence. And it's like that with
- 10:53Speaker 2: all these transfers. As you watch film of them, you
- 10:56Speaker 2: get their measurables, which is their highweight speed arm Leland,
- 11:00Speaker 2: you know, any number that you can find, if you
- 11:02Speaker 2: can find track numbers on him, you know whether it
- 11:04Speaker 2: be shot put, whether it be you know, one hundred meters,
- 11:08Speaker 2: two hundred meters, whatever it is. So you can see
- 11:11Speaker 2: who they are as a performer, as an athlete, and
- 11:14Speaker 2: then you have to do your research off the field
- 11:17Speaker 2: and find out what type of person they are. Are
- 11:19Speaker 2: they going to fit into our culture? Are they going
- 11:21Speaker 2: to add to what we're trying to be. Are they
- 11:23Speaker 2: going to take away from what we're trying to be?
- 11:26Speaker 2: Are they going to bring positive energy or negative energy?
- 11:29Speaker 2: And if we're not going to take guys, they're going
- 11:30Speaker 2: to bring negative energy. And Devin, you know, he checked
- 11:34Speaker 2: every single box and he has not disappointed one single day.
- 11:39Speaker 2: He's exactly who we thought he was and more and
- 11:43Speaker 2: we're very fortunate to have him on our team.
- 11:45Speaker 1: And I thought along those same lines, you had to
- 11:48Speaker 1: replace the defensive line this year you have been Smiley,
- 11:52Speaker 1: Where's number one?
- 11:53Speaker 4: The redshirt senior?
- 11:55Speaker 1: You got Vincent Carol Jackson in the middle of the
- 11:58Speaker 1: defensive tackle, Stefan Wright grad student, Where's number ninety two?
- 12:03Speaker 1: I thought all those guys as the game progress seem
- 12:06Speaker 1: to get better and better.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Maybe I'm wrong on that, but no, you're right.
- 12:10Speaker 2: You know, it's a whole new group, and you know,
- 12:12Speaker 2: they're replacing some longtime Huskies, you know, Jelawnie and dal
- 12:18Speaker 2: and price Yates and Langston Hardy and you know, we
- 12:23Speaker 2: could go back even one year with Eric Watts. I mean,
- 12:25Speaker 2: those guys had made a name for themselves around here,
- 12:28Speaker 2: and we're really good players and big parts of building
- 12:30Speaker 2: this program. And so it was not just replacing the
- 12:34Speaker 2: football player, but replacing the man in the locker room,
- 12:38Speaker 2: in the weight room and in the meal room, and
- 12:40Speaker 2: just the personality they brought. And you know, certain it
- 12:43Speaker 2: takes some time to integrate into a new system, into
- 12:47Speaker 2: a new program, and those guys have done a really
- 12:49Speaker 2: nice job of it. And it feels like they're home now.
- 12:52Speaker 2: You know, it doesn't feel like they're brand new. It
- 12:55Speaker 2: feels like they've been here and been with us, and
- 12:56Speaker 2: they understand what we're about, and they've added value to
- 12:59Speaker 2: our program. And you know, that's the scary part of
- 13:02Speaker 2: the portal is you don't always know a guy as.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Well as you'd like to know them when you bring
- 13:08Speaker 3: them on to your team.
- 13:09Speaker 2: And fortunately for us at this point, you know, we
- 13:12Speaker 2: brought in some good, good young.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Men and the linebackers is speaking of that as well.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Taekwon King, whereas number ten came from Temple Brian Parnham.
- 13:22Speaker 1: They were in on a lot of plays and I
- 13:24Speaker 1: was calling their names quite a bit, Donovan Branch, these guys.
- 13:29Speaker 1: As the game can't seemed to progress, We're in on
- 13:33Speaker 1: more plays. They were at the point of, you know,
- 13:36Speaker 1: attack more and more it seemed, so I thought that
- 13:40Speaker 1: was progress.
- 13:41Speaker 3: How did you vote that? Just like you you know,
- 13:44Speaker 3: it was new guys.
- 13:45Speaker 2: I mean, if you think about the guys that played,
- 13:48Speaker 2: Umar is the only one that had played any snaps
- 13:50Speaker 2: for us at the linebacker position. He and Amir Renwick,
- 13:54Speaker 2: and those were very very limited plays. And so you
- 13:57Speaker 2: mentioned Taekwon, you mentioned Brian who both came in and
- 14:00Speaker 2: did a really nice job. You know, SIONI, who wasn't
- 14:04Speaker 2: with us last year, came in and played, so we
- 14:06Speaker 2: had I think we played one to five or six
- 14:09Speaker 2: linebackers because we don't really consider Donovan a linebacker. He's
- 14:13Speaker 2: kind of, you know, he's kind of that linebacker d
- 14:16Speaker 2: lineman mixed with like a true linebacker. None of those
- 14:19Speaker 2: guys had played significant snaps for us, But as the
- 14:22Speaker 2: game went on, you saw them learn and grow and
- 14:25Speaker 2: get better. And that just has to continue. They got
- 14:28Speaker 2: to practice with a purpose every single day and then
- 14:31Speaker 2: they've got to make huge strides on Saturdays against our opponents. Yeah.
- 14:35Speaker 1: A quick thought on the secondary too, You probably well,
- 14:39Speaker 1: you know who played how many players? I don't know exactly,
- 14:42Speaker 1: but it seemed to me you left the secondary kind
- 14:45Speaker 1: of alone. You didn't substitute as much in the secondary
- 14:49Speaker 1: in the second half.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Was there a purpose to that?
- 14:51Speaker 1: Did you want to see more of your cornerback play
- 14:55Speaker 1: or something of that nature.
- 14:56Speaker 2: We well, you know, we had to make the sub
- 14:58Speaker 2: early when Malachi went and so Moy came in and
- 15:03Speaker 2: did a good job.
- 15:04Speaker 3: We wanted to let our corners play.
- 15:06Speaker 2: We made a switch at corner and got Devin out
- 15:09Speaker 2: of there and gave Cam a little bit more work.
- 15:11Speaker 3: We wanted to.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Get Osiris in who's a freshman and get him some
- 15:15Speaker 2: work at corner.
- 15:17Speaker 3: So yeah, we were pretty steady there at safety.
- 15:19Speaker 2: In the second half, we got number fourteen, Tyrese Mills
- 15:23Speaker 2: in there and he did a really.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Nice job for us.
- 15:26Speaker 2: So I feel like, you know, we were pretty consistent
- 15:30Speaker 2: back there, but we got the guys in that needed
- 15:32Speaker 2: to get some work because we know they're going to
- 15:34Speaker 2: be playing for us.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Yeah, Ken Cam Chadwick, obviously number thirteen is an outstanding cornerback.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Devon Pringle. We just talked about where's number two at
- 15:43Speaker 1: the corner and Melachi went down in a heap there
- 15:48Speaker 1: during the game. I don't know what was the extent
- 15:50Speaker 1: of what happened with him. It was he unable to
- 15:52Speaker 1: return because of injury. What was happening there.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Yeah, he took a shot. It was not a head injury.
- 16:00Speaker 2: It was you know, it was an internal thing. And
- 16:03Speaker 2: our medical staff is outstanding, from our athletic trainers to
- 16:07Speaker 2: our doctors. He was taken actually he was taken to
- 16:10Speaker 2: the hospital where he was checked out and released later
- 16:13Speaker 2: that night. I was back with the team on Sunday.
- 16:16Speaker 2: He's in great spirits. He won't be able to play
- 16:18Speaker 2: this week, but he'll be back next week. So scary moment. Yeah,
- 16:23Speaker 2: it was scary for me. I know it was scary
- 16:25Speaker 2: for his teammates and everyone affiliated with this program. But
- 16:29Speaker 2: like I said, our medical staff is top, top, top
- 16:32Speaker 2: of the line, and they took great care of him immediately.
- 16:35Speaker 1: It's Malachi McClain junior. He wears number seven all right
- 16:38Speaker 1: back with Jim Moore. We got a couple more minutes
- 16:40Speaker 1: with him, and then we've been talking to Melo Brown
- 16:42Speaker 1: and Devin Pringle as we continue on the Yukon Football
- 16:45Speaker 1: Coaches Show.
