- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:13It's Tuesday, It's the 26th of May, and it's great to have your
- 0:17company on this Tuesday as we continue reading through the
- 0:22book of Acts. And today we come to a part of
- 0:24the story that troubles a number of people.
- 0:27It is the story of this husband and wife who try to trick the
- 0:31Holy Spirit by keeping some money back and lying and they
- 0:34drop dead. And some people like how on
- 0:38earth can a loving God just kill people because of this this kind
- 0:42of deception? What about the opportunity to to
- 0:44repent and, and, and change their ways?
- 0:47Well, brilliantly for us, we've just finished reading the story
- 0:50of Joshua. Where do you remember that
- 0:53little bit about that guy named Akan who stole some precious
- 0:56items from the city of Jericho when God said do not take
- 1:00anything? And then when he was found out,
- 1:03he and his family were stoned? And so as Luke is now writing
- 1:07the book of Acts, he's drawing this parallel to say that this
- 1:11is the same God with the same absolute holiness which must be
- 1:15honoured. So he tells this story and he
- 1:18writes it in this way where it's clearly this divine act of
- 1:21judgement that ends their lives. So that we are in no doubt that
- 1:25this is not a new religion, but this is a continuation of the
- 1:29religion of Yahweh, the Israelites, God who has made
- 1:34himself known in Jesus. And then of course, the apostles
- 1:38will continue to do some wonderful things today.
- 1:40So let's dive in together friends and read together Acts
- 1:44Chapter 5. But there was a certain man
- 1:56named Ananias who, with his wife Zafira, sold some property.
- 2:02He brought part of the money to the apostles, claiming it was
- 2:05the full amount. With his wife's consent, he kept
- 2:08the rest. Then Peter said, Ananias, why
- 2:13have you let Satan fill your heart?
- 2:15You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for
- 2:18yourself. The property was yours to sell
- 2:21or not sell as you wished, and after selling it, the money was
- 2:25also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like
- 2:29this? You weren't lying to us, but to
- 2:32God. As soon as Ananias heard these
- 2:36words, he fell to the floor and died.
- 2:39Everyone who heard about it was terrified.
- 2:42Then some young men got up, wrapped him in a sheet and took
- 2:46him out and buried him. About 3 hours later, his wife
- 2:50came in. Not knowing what had happened.
- 2:52Peter asked her, was this the price you and your husband
- 2:56received for your land? Yes, she replied, that was the
- 3:00price. And Peter said, how could the
- 3:03two of you even think of conspiring to test the spirit of
- 3:07the Lord like this? The young men who buried your
- 3:10husband are just outside the door, and they will carry you
- 3:13out too. Instantly she fell to the floor
- 3:17and died. When the young men came in and
- 3:20saw that she was dead, they carried her out and buried her
- 3:24beside her husband. Great fear gripped the entire
- 3:28church and everyone else who heard what had happened.
- 3:31The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and
- 3:34wonders among the people, and all the believers were meeting
- 3:38regularly at the temple in the area known as Solomon's
- 3:41Colonnade, but no one else dared to join them.
- 3:45Even though all the people had high regard for them, yet more
- 3:49and more people believed and were brought to the Lord, crowds
- 3:53of both men and women. As a result of the apostles
- 3:57work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and
- 4:00mats so that Peter's shadow might fall across some of them
- 4:04as he went by. Crowds came from the villages
- 4:07around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil
- 4:11spirits, and they were all healed.
- 4:15The high priest and his officials, who were Sadducees,
- 4:18were filled with jealousy. They arrested the apostles and
- 4:21put them in the public gaol. But an Angel of the Lord came at
- 4:25night, opened the gates of the gaol and brought them out.
- 4:29Then he told them, go to the temple and give the people this
- 4:34message of life. So at Daybreak the apostles
- 4:37entered the Temple, as they were told, and immediately began
- 4:41teaching. When the high priest and his
- 4:43officials arrived, they convened the High Council, the full
- 4:47assembly of the elders of Israel.
- 4:50Then they sent to the apostles to be brought from the gaol for
- 4:52trial. But when the Temple guards went
- 4:55to the gaol, the men were gone. So they returned to the council
- 4:59and reported. The gaol was securely locked,
- 5:03with the guards standing outside.
- 5:05But when we opened the gates, no one was there.
- 5:09When the captain of the temple guard and the leading priests
- 5:12heard this, they were perplexed, wondering where it would all
- 5:16end. Then someone arrived with
- 5:18startling news. The men you put in gaol are
- 5:22standing in the temple teaching the people.
- 5:26The captain went with his temple guards and arrested the
- 5:29apostles, but without violence, for they were afraid the people
- 5:33would stone them. Then they brought the apostles
- 5:36before the high council, where the high priest confronted them.
- 5:40We gave you strict orders, never again to teach in this man's
- 5:44name, he said. Instead you have filled all
- 5:48Jerusalem with your teaching about him, and you want to make
- 5:52us responsible for his death. But Peter and the apostles
- 5:56replied, We must obey God rather than any human authority.
- 6:02The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead after you
- 6:06killed him by hanging him on a cross.
- 6:09Then God put him in the place of honour at his right hand as
- 6:13Prince and Saviour. He did this so the people of
- 6:17Israel would repent of their sins and be forgiven.
- 6:20We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy
- 6:23Spirit who is given by God to those who obey Him.
- 6:28When they heard this, the High Council was furious and decided
- 6:32to kill them. But one member, a Pharisee named
- 6:36Gamaliel, who was an expert in religious law and respected by
- 6:40all the people, stood up and ordered that the men be sent
- 6:43outside the council chamber for a while.
- 6:46Then he said to his colleagues, Men of Israel, take care what
- 6:51you were planning to do to these men.
- 6:54Some time ago there was that fellow Theodus who pretended to
- 6:58be someone great. About 400 others joined him, but
- 7:03he was killed and all his followers went their various
- 7:06ways. The whole movement came to
- 7:08nothing after him. At the time of the census there
- 7:12was Judas of Galilee. He got people to follow him, but
- 7:16he was killed too, and all his followers were scattered.
- 7:21So my advice is, leave these men alone.
- 7:25Let them go. If they are planning and doing
- 7:28these things merely on their own, it will soon be overthrown.
- 7:32But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them.
- 7:37You may even find yourselves fighting against God.
- 7:43The others accepted his advice. They called the apostles and had
- 7:47them flogged. Then they ordered them never
- 7:50again to speak in the name of Jesus, and they let them go.
- 7:54The apostles left the High Council rejoicing that God had
- 7:58countered them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus.
- 8:03And every day in the temple and from house to house, they
- 8:06continued to teach and preach this message.
- 8:10Jesus is the Messiah. Well, Lord, I think it's fairly
- 8:24safe to say that this point in time, 2000 years later and
- 8:29billions of billions of believers through time, your
- 8:34church is your church. This is not merely a movement of
- 8:38our own conjuring, our own cognition, but this is your
- 8:43spirit and your church for your people, saved and loved by you.
- 8:48Oh, thank you that you don't turn your back on this crooked
- 8:53world, but that you continue to love it and you continue to draw
- 8:58us back to you and to build your church so that there will be a
- 9:01light in this world of people in your community who can show that
- 9:08there is a different way of being and share this good news
- 9:11of what Jesus has done for us. So Lord, inspire us to be your
- 9:17church, not simply to attend a church or to be a member of the
- 9:21church, but let us be your church, your Spirit filled
- 9:26evangelistic presence, sharing this wonderful news of your love
- 9:31and forgiveness to all. Ah, you are the best.
- 9:35And we are just so grateful that you choose us to be your
- 9:39brothers and sisters. And we pray this in your name,
- 9:41Jesus, Amen.
