- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a Hallmark Review podcast. I'm Megan,
- 0:03Speaker 1: and in today's mini episode, you're going to hear a
- 0:05Speaker 1: conversation I had with Steve Basick, star of Garage Sale Mysteries,
- 0:10Speaker 1: Murder Takes the Stage, premiering on Saturday, September 19th, 2026. Enjoy! Hi, Steve.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I'm Megan with Girls Gone Hallmark. Thank you so much
- 0:29Speaker 1: for your time today.
- 0:31Speaker 2: My pleasure.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Good to meet you.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Excited to talk about Garage Sale Mysteries. Welcome back. It's
- 0:36Speaker 1: been a big hiatus from the series. Can you describe
- 0:39Speaker 1: what it was like being back after such a long
- 0:41Speaker 1: time away from this group?
- 0:43Speaker 3: Well, you know, you had to pinch me. It wasn't
- 0:47Speaker 3: really happening.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:49Speaker 4: So, yeah, no, I was, you know, I was a
- 0:52Speaker 4: little nervous about it as well.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 0:55Speaker 4: This long and you know obviously you know I wasn't
- 1:01Speaker 4: in touch with some of the well actually most of
- 1:03Speaker 4: the people I just we all kind of went our
- 1:05Speaker 4: separate ways and it was almost like Christmas you know
- 1:08Speaker 4: who's going to be there when are we going to
- 1:10Speaker 4: be there I knew a little bit about scheduling and
- 1:12Speaker 4: then you know just I get seeing Laurie and Kevin
- 1:18Speaker 4: and Sarah and Connor I get to see Ava but
- 1:22Speaker 4: and the cat and some of the same same crew
- 1:25Speaker 4: as well. It was like, we were just, let's just,
- 1:29Speaker 4: let's just continue.
- 1:31Speaker 3: It was awesome. All the way from, you know, even,
- 1:34Speaker 3: even our, our, our drivers.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:37Speaker 3: And I was super excited.
- 1:39Speaker 4: Some of our drivers knew about the excitement that was,
- 1:42Speaker 4: they were in chat rooms and, and forums that way.
- 1:45Speaker 4: They knew more about it than I knew about it.
- 1:47Speaker 4: So a little bit of heat, which was, which was
- 1:50Speaker 4: also making me a little nervous because I'm going to Oh,
- 1:53Speaker 4: expectations are going.
- 1:54Speaker 3: To be high.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Sure.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Absolutely. People are big fans of this series. And speaking
- 1:59Speaker 1: of crew, we've got to, as far as I can tell,
- 2:01Speaker 1: new writer and director on this one. Um, so what
- 2:04Speaker 1: was that like? Did that, how did that change things?
- 2:08Speaker 1: Was that kind of helpful maybe to have someone new
- 2:11Speaker 1: after this time away?
- 2:13Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I mean, creatively I was, you know, when
- 2:17Speaker 2: you do so many of them, we, we collaborate a
- 2:20Speaker 2: little bit and, you know, uh, The writer I didn't
- 2:24Speaker 2: get a.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Chance to meet, but I've known Paula. She was our
- 2:29Speaker 4: director from way back when. And she's also from the
- 2:35Speaker 4: school of let's come together and let's make this the
- 2:38Speaker 4: best dang thing we can make, right?
- 2:40Speaker 3: Well, there wasn't any. It still had a great flow
- 2:45Speaker 3: to it. So it was similar. It was very similar.
- 2:48Speaker 3: A little bit of new blood there.
- 2:50Speaker 4: But really still, we're trying to stay true to the
- 2:56Speaker 4: way we did it before. So it's not going to be,
- 2:59Speaker 4: it's not bumpy. It's not like, oh, this is a
- 3:00Speaker 4: different show. No, this is the same show.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it feels cohesive.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 3:07Speaker 4: That's the right word, cohesive. So I felt that even
- 3:11Speaker 4: though having someone with new eyes on it, as far
- 3:14Speaker 4: as the director is concerned, I think that, you know,
- 3:17Speaker 4: she definitely did her homework.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:21Speaker 4: But it was able to also allow us to play,
- 3:26Speaker 4: which is nice to have that trust.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:29Speaker 4: You know, and that's tough for someone coming into it
- 3:32Speaker 4: as a newbie. And yeah, I love the courage. I
- 3:36Speaker 4: thought it was a lot, and she was great.
- 3:38Speaker 3: A lot of fun. All was awesome.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Yeah, that's an interesting balance to strike, right? In terms
- 3:43Speaker 1: of like coming in and being a leader, but also
- 3:45Speaker 1: acknowledging the deep bench that you've got This is a franchise,
- 3:52Speaker 1: as you well know, with a deep back catalog. And
- 3:56Speaker 1: there may be those that are either newer to the
- 3:58Speaker 1: channel or just new to this franchise that may not
- 4:01Speaker 1: have seen all or any of the previous movies. And,
- 4:05Speaker 1: you know, I think the nice thing is these movies
- 4:06Speaker 1: do stand alone. But if someone wants to get a
- 4:09Speaker 1: sense of the vibe for the crew, is there a
- 4:12Speaker 1: movie or two that you can point them to without
- 4:15Speaker 1: assigning them 16 movies of cramming in the next week
- 4:18Speaker 1: and a half?
- 4:20Speaker 3: I mean, watch this one.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:24Speaker 4: I mean, let's stay current. And then, actually, when I
- 4:27Speaker 4: love a show, sometimes I will start. You know, I'll
- 4:31Speaker 4: jump in a little bit later and I'll go, okay,
- 4:33Speaker 4: I got to go back and see how this got here.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Sure.
- 4:36Speaker 3: So I wouldn't wait.
- 4:38Speaker 4: I say, you know, watch the movie on September 19th.
- 4:44Speaker 3: And then, yeah, go back and watch them all.
- 4:47Speaker 1: See how we got here. Yeah.
- 4:49Speaker 3: I start with the icing and then eat the cake.
- 4:52Speaker 4: I love it.
- 4:53Speaker 1: We have a segment on our show called Did You
- 4:55Speaker 1: See That? where we talk about moments that casual viewers
- 4:58Speaker 1: might have missed. And sometimes they're funny moments. Sometimes it's
- 5:01Speaker 1: an Easter egg. Sometimes it's something that has a deeper
- 5:04Speaker 1: meaning to someone on the cast or crew. Is there
- 5:06Speaker 1: a specific moment in this movie that you want viewers
- 5:09Speaker 1: to look out for?
- 5:10Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Again, not having seen the movie, it's hard to know
- 5:15Speaker 3: what stayed in. but I don't have one specifically. That's
- 5:20Speaker 3: a great question, though. I am trying to incorporate some
- 5:23Speaker 3: stuff from my real life. I don't know if it
- 5:24Speaker 3: made it, though.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Got it.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Because I think we had a pretty big script, so.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Any additions worked.
- 5:36Speaker 4: I mean, for the fact that I'm a freestyle dancer,
- 5:39Speaker 4: they wouldn't add that.
- 5:42Speaker 3: That's a joke.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I got it.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Thank you. I'm not Ray Gunn. I'm not Ray Gunn
- 5:46Speaker 3: from the Olympics.
- 5:49Speaker 4: I mean, but I want to, I think me and
- 5:53Speaker 4: Kevin O'Grady should do a dance off.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Hey, that's our next series dance team with Steve and Kevin.
- 6:02Speaker 1: There we go. So when I got to know when
- 6:05Speaker 1: it comes to mysteries, I never ever guess who the
- 6:08Speaker 1: killer is. I need to know if you're as good
- 6:11Speaker 1: of a sleuther as your onscreen wife is, or if
- 6:14Speaker 1: you are as surprised as the audience by the outcome
- 6:16Speaker 1: of these movies.
- 6:18Speaker 4: I would say I am as good because I do
- 6:20Speaker 4: love a good mystery.
- 6:22Speaker 3: I really do.
- 6:23Speaker 4: If I'm given all the information, if I, and I mean,
- 6:26Speaker 4: I'm talking about as Steve watching a movie, I'll go,
- 6:29Speaker 4: I'll go.
- 6:30Speaker 3: If I, if I paid attention. Yeah.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Because you can see, if you can see the red herrings,
- 6:34Speaker 4: you can see, you know, if you're in the business,
- 6:37Speaker 4: you want, I want, I don't want to be watching
- 6:40Speaker 4: for that.
- 6:40Speaker 3: I want to be in a way, you know, I
- 6:43Speaker 3: want to be pulled into it. But sometimes I, I'll
- 6:47Speaker 3: know why they're going to try to mislead.
- 6:49Speaker 4: And then sometimes there's a mislead to mislead the mislead.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Yes.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Because, you know, we go, oh, oh, they know because
- 6:58Speaker 4: audiences are sophisticated now.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Well, before I let you go, is there one thing
- 7:03Speaker 1: that you want viewers to know going into this movie
- 7:06Speaker 1: other than to tune in on September 19th? What do
- 7:09Speaker 1: you want them to know heading into this?
- 7:12Speaker 4: It was like we hadn't had this seven-year gap. I
- 7:17Speaker 4: think that if anything, it felt like the cast and
- 7:20Speaker 4: crew were more cohesive, more connected. We were able to
- 7:25Speaker 4: bounce off each other. And I think that it translates.
- 7:29Speaker 4: I think that it's going to translate into a very
- 7:32Speaker 4: enjoyable hour and a half of their life where they
- 7:36Speaker 4: can go back to visiting with the Shannons.
- 7:39Speaker 3: At least that's what I felt.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Well, I agree with you. It's a good time. I
- 7:43Speaker 1: can't wait for people to see it. Thank you so
- 7:44Speaker 1: much for your time.
- 7:45Speaker 4: It was as much fun. I'd say it's probably the
- 7:49Speaker 4: most in terms of humor, but it's not like, you know,
- 7:52Speaker 4: in-your-face humor. I think that we definitely had a lot
- 7:57Speaker 4: of that. We had to hold back a little bit,
- 7:58Speaker 4: I think. It's a tough, you know, when you're talking
- 8:01Speaker 4: about murder.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Right.
- 8:02Speaker 1: You want to walk the line.
- 8:05Speaker 3: But that's how we relieve. I think that's the fine balance.
- 8:10Speaker 4: And I think that's what I think that Hallmark does
- 8:13Speaker 4: it very well, but I also think Roswell Mysteries does it.
- 8:16Speaker 4: This franchise has been able to find that fine line.
- 8:20Speaker 3: You look at Laurie. She's such a lovely person. You
- 8:25Speaker 3: get distracted. Oh, there's a murder? What about that smile?
- 8:29Speaker 3: What is a murder? Let's have them over for dinner, honey.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Let's just have them over. Meatloaf, honey. Meatloaf is a murder.
- 8:37Speaker 3: That should be the next title.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Hey, there you go. Well, Steve, thank you so much
- 8:42Speaker 1: for your time. I appreciate it. Thanks always.
