- 0:02SPEAKER_01: Pod.
- 0:06SPEAKER_01: Pod.
- 0:09SPEAKER_01: Welcome back to another episode of Say Who, Say Pod.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: He's Danny O'Neill in a sports coat and a sweatshirt.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: Rocking the Mike McDonald look today.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: It's a fashion hoodie.
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: Fashion hoodie, Christian, and it's purple.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: Or eggplant.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: I'm Christian Capel.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: The Washington Huskies are 4-1.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: Woo-hoo!
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: Standard issue, regular old 24-20 win at Maryland.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Hit the window, by the way.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Hit the narrow window of a Washington win and a Maryland cover.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: I think it came down to 4.5 or 5.5 by kickoff, so...
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Not easy to do.
- 0:48I'm going to be very interested to hear about Danny's watching
- 0:51experience because
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: it was one that I think is extremely difficult to pull off in 2025.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: And you'll know.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: It's less hard when you live on the East Coast.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Fair enough.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Less difficult when you live on the East Coast.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Before we do,
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: of course,
- 1:08I'll let you know that today's episode of Say Who Say Pod is
- 1:11brought to you by our
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: good friends at Chuck Olson,
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Kia,
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: and Shoreline.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: Family owned and operated by a family of University of Washington grads.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: Locally owned and operated since when, Danny?
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: 1964.
- 1:251964,
- 1:25just after the mythical national championship that we shouldn't
- 1:28claim but do.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: It was still fresh in the minds of...
- 1:3218-year-olds have been 14 when they experienced their first
- 1:35national title,
- 1:37sort of.
- 1:39The friendly low-pressure sales staff and a competitively
- 1:44priced selection of
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: vehicles we hope you'll make.
- 1:45Chuck Olson,
- 1:46Kia,
- 1:46and Shoreline your next destination for all of your vehicle
- 1:49buying needs.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: If you do, ask for our friend Henry Olson.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: And if you talk to Henry, tell him who SayPod sent you.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Say who?
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Say pod.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: Danny did not watch the game live on television.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Danny recorded the game, time-capsuled it.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: I'm curious how you went about this.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Did you go on Do Not Disturb?
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: Did you tell people not to approach you?
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: How'd you do it?
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: No, I will not tell anyone.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: Given my friends,
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: and I will say I 100% deserve this,
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: if I told most of my really good friends what I was doing,
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: they would make efforts to ruin it for me,
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: which,
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: totally fair.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: Uh,
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: our first New York friends are leaving the city,
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: which is if it's something of a rite of passage in New York,
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: once you've been here for a certain amount of time,
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: because people do just leave the city.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: They kind of decide I've had enough and there's like, I'm getting out.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: Um, and two of our friends had their going away party.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: So we trundled over to Brooklyn and I got back and
- 2:52oh it was it was probably about 6 30 6 30 or 7 when i got back
- 2:58and plopped my butt
- 3:00so that is over yes i think so but it was it was going to be a
- 3:05touch and go uh
- 3:06scenario of whether it was over or not and then watched it on i
- 3:09don't even know
- 3:10what they call it now i have youtube tv so i don't think it's
- 3:12dvr but i had
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: recorded it on it was in my library
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: The unlimited cloud, the limitless cloud of YouTube TV.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: At any point, did you want to quit or fast forward?
- 3:25no one of the one of the real benefits of doing the time
- 3:29capsule is that you can
- 3:31skip through the commercials which i've when you're watching a
- 3:35stinker of a
- 3:36performance the commercials are the most excruciating because
- 3:40then you have to make
- 3:40yourself switch back and no i was i was committed to the long
- 3:45haul of it i never
- 3:46interrupted it the only change we did have is once the mariners
- 3:50game started
- 3:51I had a separate TV that because you can't do picture in
- 3:56picture with a recorded
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: event and a live event.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: So, yeah.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: So I had a I had a separate TV that I brought out a separate screen,
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: not a full TV,
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: but a separate screen,
- 4:07my backup computer monitor that I brought out so I could have
- 4:10that set up to the
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: live feed.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: Watch the Mariners live as I was finishing the UW game recorded.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: You can at least like pick your picture-in-picture programs now, right?
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: It used to be like a preset thing.
- 4:25Like,
- 4:25oh,
- 4:25you can watch these four games at a time or these four games or
- 4:28these two games.
- 4:28But if you want to watch this one and this one,
- 4:31you can't like customize it.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: You can at least customize it now.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: But they got to make the recording an option too.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you can't do that.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: You can't mix live.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: It's like the two streams in Ghostbusters that can't cross.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: You can't do live and record it at the same time.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: Otherwise, I think things will start smoking.
- 4:47At what point did you believe there was even the slightest
- 4:49chance that they might actually win?
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: I didn't feel terrible about the game at halftime.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: I didn't think they were going to win, but I felt like they had a shot.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: If you would ask me to give their chances,
- 5:02I would have given them a 25% to 30% chance of winning that
- 5:06game at halftime.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah,
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: because...
- 5:09And the two factors that I would have pointed to of as much as
- 5:14Maryland is
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: dominated...
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: it's not that big of a lead.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: And they've also, they've been unsustainably good on third down.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: A lot of those are makeable third downs,
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: and I don't want that to come across as they got lucky,
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: but you're not going to consistently string together that many third down
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: conversions.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: So I felt like things could change.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: Now,
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: I didn't see how they would end up changing,
- 5:41which I don't think it had as much to do with Washington's
- 5:44third down defense as it
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: did to Maryland's edge pass rushers,
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: just weren't the same.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: One of them was ejected,
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: and the other one was not the same player in the second half,
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: probably because he twisted his ankle.
- 5:55But when they went down 20,
- 5:57I was like,
- 5:58yeah,
- 5:58okay,
- 5:58that's probably not going to happen.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: I still thought they'd come back and make it interesting.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: But it was, I never fully gave up hope.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: I was mad,
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: but I never fully got the,
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: there's no chance they're coming back and winning this game.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: So at halftime,
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: I was thinking it was kind of reminding me,
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: and if Washington were going to come back and win or make it a game,
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: it was going to need to play out this way,
- 6:23of the 2006 game against UCLA where Dan Howell had to pick six
- 6:28at Husky Stadium.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: UCLA got up 16 to nothing in that game in the first half.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: They were completely dominating, but that 16 is a seven and three threes.
- 6:39So they're moving the ball like crazy and they're getting into
- 6:42scoring position,
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: so to speak,
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: but they're settling for field goals most of the time.
- 6:47And you think,
- 6:47you know,
- 6:48there's no reason to think Washington is going to win this
- 6:50game.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: UCLA is completely outplaying them, but.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: One touchdown is all they're going to need to get back in it.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: And UCLA is going to pay for having settled for so many field goals.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: And they score a touchdown right before halftime at 16-7 at halftime.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: And then I don't think Howell's pick six was the...
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: I think the pick six either gave them the lead or expanded the lead.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: They won 29-19.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: And, you know, things just completely changed after halftime.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: The parallel here...
- 7:22And one thing I think I kind of overlooked in my coverage was
- 7:27how huge it was for
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: them to hold Maryland to a field goal after DeMond Williams Jr.'
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: 's interception in the first quarter.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, they started that possession.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: They got a penalty at the tail end of the return.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: Started that possession at the 14-yard line, right?
- 7:40So other than forcing a turnover or missing the kick,
- 7:44that's as good as you can do.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:46And Mikel Esteen goes up and intercepts a pass that Malik
- 7:49Washington probably
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: shouldn't have thrown late in the first half.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: They don't get points off that, but it gave him a chance.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: I think the defense,
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: I get that it's frustrating in the first half watching Maryland play.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: not really be all that efficient or explosive at all,
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: but just converting third downs,
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: getting four yards,
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: getting four yards,
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: getting four yards.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: Like I say, averaging four yards per play is not good at all.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: But if you get exactly four yards on every play, then you'll never punt.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: So like, I think it kind of,
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: The fact that they were able to convert so many third downs,
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: score that touchdown in the first half,
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: and move the ball,
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: sustain some drives a little bit,
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: belied just how kind of inefficient they were.
- 8:33And I think on the whole,
- 8:34how tight and pretty decent Washington's defense was playing.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: And the final numbers bore that out.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, Maryland averaged...
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: 3.6 yards per play in the first half.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: And what was it, 4.2 for the game or maybe four flat?
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: You'll take that on the road against anybody, anytime.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 8:55And as someone who has covered a Pete Carroll defense for a
- 8:58long time,
- 8:59I have seen that...
- 9:01sort of approach which is don't get beat don't give up big
- 9:04place the way you get
- 9:05beat the quickest way to get beat is to give up big place and
- 9:08you make them make
- 9:09that play time after time after time the check down the short
- 9:13pass and eventually
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: your offense if you have an explosive offense
- 9:19will be able to catch up,
- 9:21will put some pressure on them,
- 9:23and pressure changes it.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: It becomes harder to execute under pressure.
- 9:26Like you,
- 9:27by making them accept,
- 9:30and look,
- 9:30they had two 16 play drives in the first half.
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: One resulted in a touchdown, the other one led to a field goal.
- 9:35But these are the reasons why when people cite the number of
- 9:38plays and time of
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: possession,
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: the single most important metric
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: or measurement of an offense is efficiency.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: How efficient are you with your opportunities?
- 9:52And that goes for length of play and putting yourself in
- 9:54position to score.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: Expected points added.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: EPA is the best measurement.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: How efficient are you?
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: Maryland was great at controlling the ball.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: Not really that efficient and not that dangerous.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: You mentioned EPA.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, success rate.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: And our guy, Stats of War, Parker Fleming on Twitter,
- 10:14Did we really get beat that bad chart every week that measures
- 10:18the net success rate
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: margins for each game?
- 10:22Some metrics base success rate on a certain percentage of yards
- 10:28gained on first,
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: second,
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: third,
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: or fourth down.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: His is based on
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: whether you had positive or negative EPA on any given play.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: So it's a little bit different.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: But Washington,
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: wasn't like an overwhelming margin,
- 10:41but it was a comfortable enough one that if they'd lost the
- 10:44game with that margin,
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: you'd go,
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: whoa,
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: that's a pretty backwards result for a losing team.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: Washington's EPA per play in this game,
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: this is per gameonpaper.com,
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: which is a resource I cite a lot if you read my site at onmontlake.com,
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: finished in the 75th percentile in this game in EPA per play.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Maryland finished 33rd.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: So that's not a game Washington should lose.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: And,
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 11:12part of why they were able to create that margin is because of
- 11:16the way that they
- 11:16played on their final four possessions and the way that
- 11:19Maryland played on its
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: final four possessions.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: And that was the ballgame.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: But,
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 11:23this was a team that it was the kind of game that if you're if
- 11:28you're not going to
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: beat Maryland in the Big Ten,
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: who are you going to beat?
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: But it's on the road.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: East Coast, Maryland's coming off a bye.
- 11:36And I think there's reason to believe this Maryland team is a
- 11:40lot better than they
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: were a year ago.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: They lost all that they lost in the transfer portal.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: We talked last week about Malik Washington.
- 11:47You saw some of his skills,
- 11:48but at the same time,
- 11:49I thought they schemed him pretty good.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Didn't really hurt them a ton.
- 11:54That drop pass on third and eight in the fourth quarter could
- 11:58have changed things a little bit.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: You could tell he really wanted that one.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Put it right where it needed to be, too.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just perfect throw.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: Perfect throw.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: At the same time, you could tell he's very poised.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: I think already he does a really good job playing within that system.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: As he progresses,
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: I think you're going to see them put more and more and more on him,
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: and he's really got a chance to
- 12:19to be a star um those edge rushers are dudes too zaheer mathis
- 12:24is like yeah if they
- 12:26can hold on to this freshman class they've got um they got a
- 12:30chance to like take a
- 12:31step back to being like a seven eight win program which they
- 12:34had been for several
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: seasons before they went four and eight last year so
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: that's a big athletic defense they have.
- 12:42I'm going to be very interested to see how they fare through
- 12:45the rest of Big Ten
- 12:46play because I'm not surprised that they gave Washington some
- 12:49problems up front.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: Now, Zaheer Mathis, I'm going to be watching him going forward.
- 12:56He absolutely had his way on the edge against Washington's
- 13:02backup left tackle.
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: That's just how it was.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:05It's possible that a bigger,
- 13:08better left tackle,
- 13:09not bigger because McCree's huge,
- 13:11but...
- 13:13might be able to use size to slow him down more than more than
- 13:17mccrea was able to
- 13:18um but his mobility and and the and the length he has like he
- 13:24he looks like a
- 13:25pretty devastating player i i was i was really impressed with
- 13:28him and and i want to
- 13:30give him credit because he stayed in the game after he he got
- 13:33rolled up on by one
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: of his teammates it was on a tackle of jonah coleman
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: He stayed in the game,
- 13:38but I just think it was pretty clear he wasn't as devastating
- 13:43coming off the edge
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: after that as he had been the first two,
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: two and a half quarters.
- 13:49Five pressures,
- 13:51three hurries,
- 13:52a sack,
- 13:53and a quarterback hit for Zaheer Mathis per PFF.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: What did you think was going on with DeMont?
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: You know, he just seemed a little off.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 14:06He talked and Jed Fish talked about some of the coverage stuff
- 14:08that Maryland was doing.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: Similar to Ohio State, Jed Fish said anyway, in that they were...
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: they were not going to let Denzel Boston beat them deep.
- 14:20I don't think they were giving Washington a ton of one-on-one
- 14:24looks with him
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: outside,
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: or maybe they're trying to disguise to show man coverage before the snap,
- 14:31but then rolling a safety over and effectively getting a double
- 14:34team on him.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 14:37The reason I would put it more on like it was just kind of an
- 14:41off half by Daman Williams Jr.
- 14:43is how badly he missed that throw to Denzel Boston up the seam
- 14:47to the point where
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: like I figured,
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: oh,
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: he must have been expecting him to break differently.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:52And Jed Fish said it was not a miscommunication that he just
- 14:55threw it behind him.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: It just maybe it slipped a little bit or whatever.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: But like, that's not a that's not a throw he misses.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 15:01I have a couple working theories and I'd be interested to hear
- 15:04your appraisal of my
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: sort of from the couch theories.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: The first one is that that interception really rattled him.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: And he's he's very conscientious about taking care of the ball.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: He's not someone that he's super accurate passer.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: We know this about he does not.
- 15:20He's not reckless when even when he's running around and he is
- 15:24someone who is very
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: conscientious about protecting the ball.
- 15:27And that the interception rattles him and caused him to hold on
- 15:31to the ball a
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: little bit more and maybe doubt himself a little bit.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: Like,
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: I don't know,
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: which is a hard thing for any quarterback,
- 15:36but we're still talking about a quarterback in his first full
- 15:39year as a starter,
- 15:40starting on the road against a team that has some momentum and
- 15:44believes in itself
- 15:44and sees this as a chance to have a sort of plant your flag
- 15:47game and who has a
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: couple of freaking demons coming off the edge against him.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: That he was just, he was rattled.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: That rattled him for the first half.
- 15:57The other question I had is that I think you've seen him have
- 16:04less room when he scrambles.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: These past two games and clearly Ohio State,
- 16:10some of that just comes down to the to the speed that that they
- 16:14have and the
- 16:15linebacker was spying on him who shouldn't be allowed to play
- 16:18linebacker given how
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: fast he is.
- 16:20I think there should be just an exception like he's too fast to
- 16:23play linebacker.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: He has to play further back from the line of scrimmage.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:27And that that caused him a little bit of indecision,
- 16:30like he didn't want to run.
- 16:32Then when he did run,
- 16:33there wasn't as much space to run,
- 16:34and it all kind of caved in on him.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: What do you think of my two theories?
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: The one being he was rattled,
- 16:41the second one being the lack of room to run kind of made him
- 16:45feel a little more
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: compressed or caged in.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you're spot on with him being rattled.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: I think you could see him holding the ball a little bit.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: It was a little more hesitant to let it rip.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: He's,
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: like Jed Fish pointed out,
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: he made that same throw three times against Ohio State.
- 17:01But it's a little different when you're a sophomore with only a
- 17:05handful of starts
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: under your belt.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: I guess seven now.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: But then,
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: maybe when you're a senior and you miss a throw like that,
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: you're like,
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: oh,
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: I made that throw a hundred times in games.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: It's nothing.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: Just shake it off, move on to the next play.
- 17:16But when you're still relatively earlier in your career and
- 17:19you're on the road and
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: nothing else is going right,
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: I could see,
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: OK,
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: now I really got to prioritize the ball.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: We really got to value possessions.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: I cannot throw another pick.
- 17:31Maybe some of the lack of room scrambling against Ohio State,
- 17:36too,
- 17:36influences those decisions.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Because I don't know if he was as squeezed in this game.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: It seemed like there were opportunities in the first half to take off.
- 17:45And it seemed like he took those opportunities in the second
- 17:48half and got...
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: they had two runs in this game longer than 10 yards.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: And they're both his.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: And one was the 20-yard scramble.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: That was a huge play to turn...
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: what could have been an incompletion into a big game, moving the chains.
- 18:06And then the other was the 10-yard design run on their final
- 18:10possession that
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: allowed them to ice the clock.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: They didn't have to run the ball, by the way, on the next two plays.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: I don't know how many people noticed or cared because nobody fumbled,
- 18:20but could have easily just snapped it and rolled out and slid
- 18:23or taken a couple
- 18:24steps backward on the kneel down and not put the ball in harm's
- 18:28way in any way on
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: those plays.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: I loved the design keeper.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: I thought that was a great play.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: I thought it was a pretty badass.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: And I'm not as big a fan of the speed option into the boundary,
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: but when you've got some ganas,
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: when you've got some guts as a play caller like Jed Fish has,
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: that's the benefit you get.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: That's a pretty gutsy call.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: And I loved it.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: And it worked great.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: They finally got Deckard to Graff involved.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: I think people had kind of been waiting on that.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: And
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: Really, I think, is the get into the teeth of Big Ten play here.
- 19:03You're going to see more and more teams roll coverage to take
- 19:06Denzel Boston away.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: If I'm scheming against Washington,
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: those of us out here,
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: like,
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: I think we've seen enough of Desmond Roebuck so far to know that,
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: like,
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: he's going to be a pretty good player.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: Throw Vines Bright in there, too.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: Both of those true freshmen are players right now.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: But if I'm scheming against Washington,
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: I'm not looking at that receiver core and seeing a,
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: a Romo Dunze,
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: Jalen McMillan,
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: Jalen Polk,
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: number two and three,
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: right?
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: There's one dude above and beyond.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: There's one dude you can say, we don't want this guy to beat us.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: And I think if,
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 19:46if concern over Denzel Boston takes attention off of Desmond
- 19:52Roebuck or Raiden
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: Vinesbright,
- 19:54I think Jed Fish could be just okay with that because I think
- 19:59they really believe
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: in those guys.
- 20:00And you saw Desmond Roebuck get a one-on-one opportunity in the
- 20:04fourth quarter and
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: DeMond Williams Jr.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: made a perfect throw.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: By the way,
- 20:09There's an end zone view of that play where you can see Roebuck
- 20:13running the route,
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: and as he starts to track the ball,
- 20:16he speeds up and gets himself in the most efficient way
- 20:20possible to exactly where
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: he needed to be to catch that ball in stride with a foot in bounds.
- 20:25That ball tracking ability and that just kind of natural feel
- 20:29for where exactly on
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: the field do I need to get to to maximize our yardage on this play is
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: you either have that or you don't, you know?
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: And he's like,
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: that's what,
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: he's 5'10 and 180 pounds,
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: and he doesn't run a 4'4,
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: and he's never going to be a sub-11,
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: 100-meter guy,
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: and all,
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: like,
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: what separates him?
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Like, that...
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: And the fact that he catches everything.
- 20:54But that sort of innate ability to track the ball and get to
- 21:00exactly where you need
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: to get to in fluid motion and make the play,
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: I think you're going to see a lot of that from him.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: It was an impressive catch.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: You know what I think of every time he catches the ball, Christian?
- 21:11SPEAKER_02: This is credit to you or blame to you, however you want to say it.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: Every time he catches the ball, I'm like, really?
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: Arizona didn't want it?
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: They didn't just trip over themselves?
- 21:21How do you let that guy get out of the state without laying
- 21:23down in front of the car?
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: That dude's a baller.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: He's a baller.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: Vines Bright is a baller.
- 21:30The catch that Vines Bright had,
- 21:33I thought that might be one of the more pivotal plays.
- 21:35The third down catch early in the second half where he makes
- 21:41it,
- 21:42runs the route perfectly.
- 21:44SPEAKER_02: It's an out route over toward the sticks.
- 21:48I thought that as much as anything,
- 21:50that was a turning point in how their offense executed.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: That on a critical third down play where they're really at a point where
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: OK,
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: if you don't get something here,
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: there's you're not going to have a chance to win this game.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: Like you're it has to happen now.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: And maybe that was part of the breakthrough where there's no more.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: OK, we're OK.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: If we just score here, we don't need to press.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: We don't need it's like, OK, dude, it's got it's got it now or never.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: It's got to happen now.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: You've got to cut it loose.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: And that was a great connection those two made.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: Fiennes Bryant's big too.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: for a true freshman playing in the slot in Jed Fish's offense,
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: like he definitely presents a little bit of a different target than,
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: Giles Jackson was good for them last year.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: Had a good year,
- 22:32but you could see him maybe getting a little more done after
- 22:36the catch as he
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: progresses in his career.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: Like I think he's going to be that,
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: stronger slot guy who's going to have a chance to break tackles and
- 22:46Be interested to see how they can maybe scheme up more
- 22:48opportunities for him,
- 22:49too.
- 22:51I'm glad you mentioned the Arizona thing with Roebuck again,
- 22:54not to harp on it.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: But we talked about initially,
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: like,
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: well,
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: he was he developed such a relationship with Jed Fish and Kevin Cummings.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: And,
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: when he left for Washington,
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: was he just signed,
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: sealed,
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: delivered to go with that staff no matter what?
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: Look,
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: I think they really wanted him,
- 23:13and I think if they'd really turn the pressure on in a very
- 23:17competitive battle with
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: multiple other schools,
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't bet against Jed Fish to Washington landing Desmond Roebuck.
- 23:23But part of recruiting is not just throwing the towel in when
- 23:29you have a shot,
- 23:31right?
- 23:32And so I think as evidence of the fact that it was silly for
- 23:38the Arizona staff to
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: not pursue him,
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: Who was the one other school pushing for him before signing day, Danny?
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: It was the Arizona State Sun Devils and Kenny Dillingham.
- 23:54So either your head coach is a relentless recruiter and doesn't
- 24:00take no for an
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: answer and is never say never.
- 24:03Kenny Dillingham probably knew he was not going to get Desmond
- 24:06Roebuck away from
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: Washington,
- 24:08but he saw the talent and wanted him and wasn't going to back
- 24:13off until there was
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: no chance.
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: That's recruiting.
- 24:17And so if you're the head coach in Tucson and you don't even
- 24:21initiate contact with
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: Desmond Roebuck after you take the job,
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: either outcome is non-optimal.
- 24:27If I'm an Arizona fan,
- 24:28either you looked at Desmond Roebuck and Roebuck and thought,
- 24:30nah,
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: We don't want him.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: Or you looked at Desmond Roebuck and thought,
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: yeah,
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: he's a good player,
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: but Jed Fish is all over him.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: And I don't know.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: It's probably not worth our time.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: I don't like either one of those if I'm an Arizona fan.
- 24:46I would definitely say he would have to be the kind of player
- 24:49where you're going to
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: have to tell me no 500 times.
- 24:52And even then,
- 24:52I'm still going to ask you because you're the kind of player I
- 24:55want.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: I just...
- 24:56Those are the kind of football players you want on a college
- 24:59football team.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: And that's especially true if you're a team like,
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: quite frankly,
- 25:05Washington is in the Big Ten and Arizona is where you're not
- 25:07going to win.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: You're not going to have the highest rated recruits,
- 25:12SPEAKER_02: recruiting classes in your respective conferences.
- 25:14It's going to be about getting guys who are have a
- 25:18competitiveness and a fire about
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: them,
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: about the way they play,
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: as opposed to just raw stars on your recruiting profile.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: what was the most negative thought you had watching this game?
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: Like, how bad did it get for you mentally, and at what point?
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: The worst point was,
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: oh,
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: man,
- 25:42I don't know how you come out of that game against Ohio State
- 25:45feeling that there's
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: progress,
- 25:47and look at how they played in the first half here and think
- 25:50that it was actually
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: progress.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: Like, that's really what it came, whereas, oh...
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: I thought this team was beyond laying a stinker like this.
- 26:01Because it felt like Maryland on offense wasn't doing anything
- 26:05extraordinary.
- 26:07SPEAKER_02: And Washington was just feeble on offense.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: Like their offense, that offense looked bad.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: And...
- 26:14It felt like anything that you thought you saw in the Ohio
- 26:18State game was a product
- 26:20of Ohio State being conservative as opposed to Washington
- 26:24having shown progress.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: So I would say that that was one of the worst halves just in terms of
- 26:31competitiveness from a Washington team that I'd seen since the
- 26:34Ty Willingham era.
- 26:36like that where really i just i just felt that they were off
- 26:40and just it was feeble
- 26:42like they weren't that offense didn't do anything and that that
- 26:48that part surprised
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: me um
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: And to their credit,
- 26:53like they came and flipped it around and they deserve a ton of
- 26:57credit for that.
- 26:57And I think that those sort of moments are really important for
- 27:01teams because it
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: forces you when things can you can you get out of a slump?
- 27:08like the people this was one of the interesting from base uh it
- 27:11was the farm
- 27:12director for the mariners he talked about everybody goes into
- 27:15slumps it's a part of
- 27:16baseball you have to do it getting out of a slump like that's a
- 27:19skill avoiding a
- 27:21slump you can't do that in baseball like you're going to have
- 27:24that but getting out
- 27:25of a slump that is something you can get better at that is
- 27:29something you can learn
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: to do and for for washington in this game
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: like that goes a long way toward sort of the experience,
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: the confidence that comes with,
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: Hey,
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: we took a game that was headed in one direction.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: We planted our foot, we pushed back and we got it over the hump.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Like it was really meaningful results in, in that way.
- 27:49The positives of the comeback to me clearly outweigh the
- 27:53negatives of a two
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: quarter,
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: no show on the part of the offense.
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: I mentioned this in my story, but like,
- 28:03I don't know that I've ever seen a comeback like that that was
- 28:05not sparked by one
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: big,
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: like,
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: massive EPA play,
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: for example.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: Like,
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: it's 20 to—you kick the field goal,
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: it's 20 to 3,
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: and then you get a pick 6 on the next play from scrimmage,
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: and boom,
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: it's 20 to 10.
- 28:22And you're right back in it,
- 28:24and then immediately your sideline's going nuts,
- 28:27and you—
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: decidedly have the momentum.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: Everyone on Maryland side is thinking, Oh my God, here we go again.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: We're going to collapse.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: We're going to be September, Maryland.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: Um, I, uh,
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: For them to fall behind by 20 points and then just go field goal,
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: touchdown,
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: touchdown,
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: touchdown,
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: and hold Maryland to punt,
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: punt,
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: punt,
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: turnover on downs.
- 28:52Like,
- 28:53I don't know how many three-score third-quarter comebacks go
- 28:57that way without –
- 28:59a punt return for a touchdown or block punt for a touchdown or
- 29:02a turnover deep in
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: their end or whatever.
- 29:04Like I know I've said this before,
- 29:06but,
- 29:06um,
- 29:07to me,
- 29:07that's what made it most remarkable.
- 29:09And like,
- 29:09obviously there were things that broke in Washington's way,
- 29:13right?
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: You got to catch breaks along the way.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 29:16so here math is not being a hundred percent throughout the
- 29:18fourth quarter,
- 29:20Sidney Stewart getting ejected late in the first half to really
- 29:23take some heat off
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: the pass rush.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: You big, big drop on third down there in the fourth quarter by Maryland.
- 29:31But also,
- 29:32like,
- 29:34this is,
- 29:35you saw this throughout,
- 29:36like,
- 29:36the Mike Leach era at Washington State.
- 29:39This is the downside to not being able to run the ball is when
- 29:42you get up 20 to
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: nothing,
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: 20 to three,
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: and you don't feel like you can lean on your running game at all.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: They ran the ball four times in the second half.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 29:51They were up 13-0 at halftime and 20-3 the next time they got
- 29:55the ball back and
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: didn't run the ball.
- 29:58And I don't think it's because it just didn't occur to them
- 30:02that they should do that.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: I think it's because they're not a good running team.
- 30:05They didn't have the confidence that they could lean on that
- 30:09aspect of their game.
- 30:10And,
- 30:11you know,
- 30:12Jet Fish would point to that probably,
- 30:14like if Washington felt that way.
- 30:17Jed Fish would point to that as something they need to clear up
- 30:19because you're not
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: going to win games in the Big Ten doing that in particular.
- 30:22So not having like a really reliable running game,
- 30:26I think really hurt Maryland too.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: And,
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: there was the,
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: what did,
- 30:30so I wrote that the taunting penalty on Maryland was among the
- 30:35worst I'd ever seen.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: But folks pointed out,
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: and rightfully so,
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: that there'd been,
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: I think,
- 30:41some warnings issued by the officiating crew to Maryland's
- 30:45defense in particular
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: about taunting and talking and all those sort of things.
- 30:50So it might have been like a lifetime achievement award rather
- 30:54than just a one-off,
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: like,
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: hey,
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: this individual thing in a vacuum is not okay.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:02SPEAKER_02: What is that celebration?
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: I always refer to it as the seatbelt, but I don't think it is.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: Was it like sheathing a sword, like putting the sword back in the hilt?
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: It is a seatbelt.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: So I got this wrong.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: Devon Banks did it.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: You remember Devon Banks had that huge game against Boise State in 2023,
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: had four pass breakups,
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: almost had an interception.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: Now plays for Boise State, by the way.
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: He did it after a big pass breakup.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: And I did a feature on him that week and I wrote,
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: I think I described it as like a sword sheathing maneuver.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: And someone at Washington was a couple of days later was like,
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: oh,
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: by the way,
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: like that celebration is like,
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: it's a,
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: It's a seatbelt.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: It's like, you know.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: I'm wrapping you up.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, put you in the car seat and put the seatbelt on you.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: Like, you're not going anywhere.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: So,
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: you see that,
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: like,
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: my thing is,
- 31:49even if they'd been warned a bunch or they're doing a bunch of
- 31:51trash talking,
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: whatever,
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: like,
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: he wasn't standing over him.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: He was yards away from him.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: Every,
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: like,
- 31:57is there going to be a college football game across the country
- 31:59on a given Saturday
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: where someone doesn't do that celebration?
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: I just thought it was, I thought it was weak.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: I thought it was a very weak call, too.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: It also, was it on second down?
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: Was it after a second down play?
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: It was on first down.
- 32:14SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 32:14So first and goal from the seven becomes...
- 32:16And then it was first and goal from the three.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: Instead of second and goal from the seven.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: Like, it wasn't a huge impact penalty.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: I just thought it was lame.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: I thought it was a lame call.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: But beyond that, I mean, mostly it was their offense.
- 32:30I think after Washington's comeback started,
- 32:32I can't,
- 32:34is it like five first downs that they got?
- 32:36They had two straight three and outs where they just ran three
- 32:39plays and had to punt.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: And then they had two drives were six and seven plays after that.
- 32:45SPEAKER_02: They just, they didn't have any offense to go to.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: And some of that is...
- 32:51that when when you rely upon consistently stringing together
- 32:55third downs,
- 32:56that becomes tough.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: And not only that,
- 32:58when you apply pressure like that's you make the other team
- 33:01come through in those
- 33:02SPEAKER_02: moments.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: And that becomes a challenge.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: Can you sustain it?
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: Are you able to do it?
- 33:10Maryland was in position to convert that third down on the pass
- 33:12that was lobbed.
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: It didn't happen.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: And that's part of the make them execute in big moments.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: So I thought the penalty was lame.
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure how much that had to do with the outcome.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: I just...
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: Maryland,
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: if they were going to win that game,
- 33:29needed to have built a bigger lead when Washington was busy
- 33:32doing nothing.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: And instead, they really couldn't.
- 33:37SPEAKER_02: And maybe that's like Washington's defense deserves some credit there by,
- 33:41SPEAKER_02: hey,
- 33:41SPEAKER_02: we're not going to give up any big plays.
- 33:43SPEAKER_02: We're going to make them slowly and incrementally earn it.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: And yeah,
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: they're going to have 13 points at halftime,
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: and they're going to score a touchdown early in the second half,
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: and we're still going to be in it.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: It's going to be a three-score game at that point.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: 21 first downs for Washington in the second half, to your point.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: Seven for Maryland.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: Maryland had 18 first downs in this game.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: You know how many first downs rushing they had?
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: Ooh.
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: I can't think of one, so I'll guess one.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: There were two.
- 34:19so it's a it's and you know the pep hamilton is their offensive
- 34:23coordinator
- 34:25obviously very experienced long track record there they throw a
- 34:28lot of short passes
- 34:29right they throw a lot of quick passes that has long been an
- 34:33extension of the
- 34:33running game in college football um and i think malik
- 34:37washington is he handles that
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: well right like he's
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: I don't know if that's exactly how they want to play or if that's,
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: we have a true freshman quarterback.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: And so let's simplify things slash.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: We also can't really run the ball.
- 34:52And so this is going to be how we're going to kind of get this
- 34:54incremental yardage
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: on early downs.
- 34:56SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 34:59It's just such a wild second-half box score for a game that was
- 35:0620 to nothing.
- 35:06They outgained them in the second half,
- 35:10290 to 127,
- 35:1321 first downs to 7 first downs.
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: Washington's 4 of 6 on third down.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: Maryland's 2 of 6 and 0 for 1 on fourth down.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: Washington runs 44 plays to Maryland's 28.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: They possess the ball almost twice as long, which is...
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: Not always an indicator of success in this game.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: I think it was because when you're up 20-3, possessing the ball is good.
- 35:36Even if it doesn't end in points,
- 35:38that's sort of a win in itself,
- 35:39and Maryland couldn't do that.
- 35:44I'm not sure I've ever covered another Washington game where
- 35:48you went from
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: thinking,
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: this is the worst result of this head coach's tenure,
- 35:55to this is probably the most encouraging thing this team has
- 35:59done since Jed Fish
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: got to Washington.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: Am I wrong?
- 36:03SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's a good point.
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: I hadn't thought about that because you do,
- 36:06SPEAKER_02: because I did come away feeling like,
- 36:07SPEAKER_02: okay,
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: yeah,
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: man,
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: Jed's got a backbone and his team's tough.
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: No, I think that's accurate.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: The other games that flipped,
- 36:15SPEAKER_02: the UCLA game was a good call because I wouldn't have remembered that,
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: but that totally.
- 36:20I was thinking of the Arizona game,
- 36:21the Mason Foster pick return against Arizona.
- 36:24SPEAKER_02: It was a night game.
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: And that's Sark, right?
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: Yes, that was his first year, 2009.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: But Sark's signature moment that year was the USC victory.
- 36:38And giving up a Hail Mary to Arizona State where they got a
- 36:45receiver completely
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: behind their secondary in Tempe.
- 36:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that was...
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: Weird things happen in the desert, man.
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: No, I would agree with you.
- 36:54I think that's a very accurate call of feeling like,
- 36:57man,
- 36:57he did not have this.
- 36:59SPEAKER_02: They're just not ready to go.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: And whatever you thought you saw last week against Ohio State,
- 37:04SPEAKER_02: this is a team that's going to scuffle.
- 37:07SPEAKER_02: They're probably going to win seven games.
- 37:08SPEAKER_02: That was how I felt very much.
- 37:11at the end of the first half,
- 37:13or at the very least,
- 37:14when Maryland scored to go up 20-0.
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: That's how I felt.
- 37:18It's like,
- 37:18this is a team that is going to have to hustle to win seven
- 37:21games.
- 37:22And instead came away feeling like they should be really proud
- 37:25of the way they
- 37:25SPEAKER_02: played in that game.
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: Like that showed a lot of toughness,
- 37:29and that is going to be one for a young team that will be a
- 37:33very important game.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: Still some injury concerns.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: Carver Willis was wearing a large brace on his right leg at this game.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: He did travel.
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he traveled.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: That made me encouraged.
- 37:45SPEAKER_02: Am I wrong about that?
- 37:47Yeah,
- 37:47I don't know,
- 37:48because I don't think there was any chance he was going to
- 37:51play.
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: No, but that's a long flight.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: And maybe this is all I've always been accustomed to.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: If a guy with an injury doesn't need to fly, he shouldn't fly.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: So I kind of took that almost as a positive sign.
- 38:06SPEAKER_02: But then I was like, I have no idea what it means.
- 38:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't really know.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: I asked Jed Fish yesterday about Willis and Durfee in particular.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: Are these long-term injuries?
- 38:18And he said that they don't have an indication right now that
- 38:23they should be too
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: long-term,
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: which,
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: you know.
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: I think that means we might see them before the year's over.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: It's very hard to say.
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: They have not ruled them out for a potential return in the bowl game.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: I'll say this.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: I, and I think I said as much, the week of the Ohio State game.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: It's not about the words on paper, but about the vibe.
- 38:48I did not get the vibe from Jed Fish or Ryan Walters that they
- 38:52were expecting
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: Takario Davis to play against Ohio State,
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: and he didn't.
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: Just the way they were talking about it,
- 38:59the way they were talking about other guys who were going to
- 39:02have to play if he
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: didn't play,
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: Dylan Robinson in particular,
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: was
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: I just thought like,
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: man,
- 39:09typically you'd think he's going to do everything he can to
- 39:11play in this game in
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: particular,
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: but the way these guys are talking about him,
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: it's not pointing to him playing to me.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: He made the trip too, worked out before the game.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: They're just trying to...
- 39:24Trying to protect that rib,
- 39:26that can be a tricky thing,
- 39:27and they're all different.
- 39:29We don't know if he broke it,
- 39:31if he cracked it,
- 39:33if it's just a rib or what.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: Who knows?
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: But I will say all that to say,
- 39:42the way they're talking about him now does seem a little more
- 39:45genuinely optimistic.
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: Like, I think they really truly do believe he's close.
- 39:51And so this would be the first week where I wouldn't be
- 39:55surprised to see him play.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: I wasn't certain he was out against Ohio State.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: I wasn't certain he was out against Maryland,
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: but I would have been surprised to see him in either of those games.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: I'm not certain one way or the other this week,
- 40:09but the way they're talking about him has got me now at a place
- 40:13where if he does
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: play,
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: I won't be surprised.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: So you're welcome for the clarity on that situation.
- 40:23What we're going to do is we're going to make a meter and it's
- 40:25going to have your
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: head,
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: Christian,
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: and we're going to put it on the,
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: it'll be the Christian surprise meter.
- 40:30SPEAKER_02: And I'm going to have you take like five or six different pictures.
- 40:33There'll be like emoji versions of Christian about how
- 40:36surprised he would be if so-and-so plays.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: And this week it would be,
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: what I'm getting is like maybe a slightly like,
- 40:43SPEAKER_02: hmm,
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: yeah,
- 40:45SPEAKER_02: I could see that.
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: Like, oh, all right.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: Whereas if he'd played against Ohio State, it would have been, hmm.
- 40:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah,
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: it would have been that,
- 40:55SPEAKER_01: and it would have been,
- 40:56SPEAKER_01: okay,
- 40:57they're a little bit more savvy at this gamesmanship thing than
- 41:01I thought.
- 41:01SPEAKER_02: They're cagey.
- 41:01SPEAKER_02: There's some gamesmanship going on.
- 41:04uh fish all but conceded on monday that carver willis won't be
- 41:09playing this week um
- 41:11and it's a short week too so that doesn't help durfee to my
- 41:14knowledge did not make
- 41:15the trip to maryland it's always hard to say someone wasn't
- 41:20there um when there's
- 41:23100 plus people in their traveling party and like did you lay
- 41:26eyes on every single
- 41:27SPEAKER_01: one but
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 41:28Carver Willis and Takario Davis and Javon Parker were very
- 41:31prominently there and
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: saw them and,
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: in the mix and the celebration.
- 41:36I got to imagine if Durfee had been there,
- 41:37he would have been doing the same.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: So don't know.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: They don't think it's too long term.
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: But I will say this on the surprise meter.
- 41:47SPEAKER_01: I would be surprised to see him play on Friday against Rutgers.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: But what the hell do I know?
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: They do think they're getting Javon Parker back this week.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: we'll see where he fits into the D line rotation.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: I think, um,
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: They feel a lot better about the available bodies there,
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: and they don't necessarily,
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: like,
- 42:05I'd be pretty surprised if he goes out and plays 25 snaps in
- 42:09his first game back.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: I think they can afford to maybe ease him into things a bit.
- 42:14And I think it would also just be meaningful for him to get on
- 42:18the field against
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: Rutgers in particular because that's who he got hurt against last year.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: And so,
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 42:24what better way to make your season debut coming back from that
- 42:27Achilles injury?
- 42:28SPEAKER_01: I guess he had a knee thing, too.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: Fish said it wasn't just one thing.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: And,
- 42:33SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 42:33maybe there's some symbolism there for him to enjoy if he can
- 42:36get on the field and
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: feel good for at least a few snaps.
- 42:38SPEAKER_01: And they also think that Zadrius Rainey-Saleh,
- 42:41SPEAKER_01: the star freshman linebacker,
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: is going to be available.
- 42:45SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 42:46SPEAKER_02: He was in uniform.
- 42:47SPEAKER_02: Has he been in uniform before I saw him?
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: He's been in uniform, yeah.
- 42:49So him and Manu suited up for like two or three games before
- 42:53Manu came back.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: They weren't on the exact same timeline.
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: Manu's ACL was like a month before Rainy Saleh's.
- 43:01SPEAKER_01: But he's been practicing.
- 43:03And I'm very curious to see,
- 43:07like,
- 43:07if he goes out and plays double-digit snaps at linebacker,
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: that will be quite the statement about their belief in his future.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: If as a true freshman coming off an ACL injury in game six,
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: they're immediately throwing him into the rotation.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: So, you know, we'll see there.
- 43:25SPEAKER_01: I kind of think it's a,
- 43:28get your feet wet on special teams a bit and maybe mix him in
- 43:30at linebacker,
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: give him a look,
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: see how he can help you.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: but I don't know,
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: maybe they've seen something in practice and Ryan Walters talked about,
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: uh,
- 43:39SPEAKER_01: his football IQ,
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: how impressive he is.
- 43:41SPEAKER_01: And I think kind of like Jacob Manu, he's not, um,
- 43:46He's the kind of guy who impresses people just by sort of how
- 43:50he carries himself,
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: like,
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: off the field.
- 43:53SPEAKER_01: He's an energy guy.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: I think he's got some, like, natural leadership skills.
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: Brian Odom,
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: their linebackers coach,
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: talked about how,
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: in the spring,
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: he's like,
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: I haven't seen him do any football stuff yet,
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: but...
- 44:06SPEAKER_01: boy, you can't miss him when he walks in a room.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: He's the kind of guy who just lights up a room and very self-assured,
- 44:12SPEAKER_01: very confident,
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: plays like it.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: So I think that their defense could use some of that edge too.
- 44:19SPEAKER_01: Again, true freshman coming off an ACL injury in game six of the season.
- 44:25I don't know how much you should expect him to play at
- 44:29linebacker in particular,
- 44:30but
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: You know, you could also get him a little bit of action this week.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: Build reps, build reps.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: We'll see what they do with Jacob Manu in the redshirt situation.
- 44:40SPEAKER_01: He's played two games now.
- 44:42SPEAKER_01: He's got two left.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: If they want to preserve it,
- 44:45might just see him let it go and play the whole year and hope
- 44:48that he can get an
- 44:49extra year back at the end because they changed the eligibility
- 44:52thing or whatever.
- 44:52SPEAKER_01: But...
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: Zadris Rainey-Saleh is,
- 44:56SPEAKER_01: if not this year,
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: and maybe this year,
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: but if not this year,
- 44:59I think you're looking for something from him to get folks
- 45:04excited about what he
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: can be as a sophomore and going forward.
- 45:07SPEAKER_02: So this is a question that cannot be asked of anyone that's associated or
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: affiliated with the team,
- 45:12SPEAKER_02: but it occurred to me,
- 45:14SPEAKER_02: watching Manu play,
- 45:15SPEAKER_02: clearly snaps somewhat limited still on Saturday,
- 45:19SPEAKER_02: though he looked really good,
- 45:21SPEAKER_02: and him blowing up that screen was one of the more devastating plays.
- 45:24SPEAKER_02: seeing Rainy Saleh in uniform,
- 45:26SPEAKER_02: which I had not noticed before,
- 45:28SPEAKER_02: and thinking to myself,
- 45:30SPEAKER_02: man,
- 45:31SPEAKER_02: they're really developing,
- 45:33SPEAKER_02: depending on how many guys they keep next year.
- 45:36SPEAKER_02: Like, this could be a team that is really ready to pop a year from now.
- 45:40Does that ever enter your mind when you look at how the
- 45:43roster's made up and where
- 45:44SPEAKER_02: guys are and maybe some of the bare spots on the roster?
- 45:47SPEAKER_02: Because clearly, especially after the injury to Alupta,
- 45:54middle linebacker was a spot that's missing and their little
- 45:56light on the defensive
- 45:57line though javon parker coming back that you really feel like
- 46:01if depending on how
- 46:03many guys they retain that this this could be a team that is
- 46:06primed to pop a year
- 46:07from now yeah i think a lot of stuff has been pointing to year
- 46:10three um some folks
- 46:14have been pointing to the big 10 schedule in year three since
- 46:17it was released
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: before last season um and it's i will say like i
- 46:23SPEAKER_01: Nebraska and USC are both on it.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: So,
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: like,
- 46:26those are two programs that could maybe be seen as making a
- 46:29move a little bit this
- 46:31SPEAKER_01: year,
- 46:31SPEAKER_01: and we'll see.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: You know, no one really trusts Lincoln Riley.
- 46:35SPEAKER_02: I'll say that on Nebraska.
- 46:36Nebraska looks,
- 46:37even though they've got the crazy quarterback,
- 46:39I don't know about USC.
- 46:41SPEAKER_02: They got Michigan this week.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: They've got Penn State coming to Seattle, but...
- 46:47SPEAKER_01: They'll be a different team than they are this year.
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: And how good are they this year?
- 46:51SPEAKER_02: What happens when Penn State comes to the West Coast?
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: So they do play at Autzen.
- 46:57SPEAKER_01: It's not an easy schedule,
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: and it could look,
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: I think,
- 46:59SPEAKER_01: a lot more difficult by the time it rolls around.
- 47:01But point being,
- 47:02like,
- 47:02yeah,
- 47:02year three's kind of been circled a little bit.
- 47:04SPEAKER_01: Tamar Williams Jr.
- 47:05SPEAKER_01: will be a junior.
- 47:07Adam Mohamed is right there to take over for Jonah Coleman at
- 47:11running back.
- 47:12They really like these young receivers,
- 47:13though they'll be replacing Denzel Boston.
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: Decker DeGraff will be a junior.
- 47:17SPEAKER_01: John Mills will be a sophomore.
- 47:19SPEAKER_01: Landon Hatchett will be a senior.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: Drew Azapardi will be a senior.
- 47:23I think you're going to expect true freshmen like Derek Coleman
- 47:26Brusa to be involved.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: Maybe Cody Green, their five-star offensive tackle commit gets involved.
- 47:32SPEAKER_01: Brian Bonner,
- 47:34four-star running back recruit who we talked about being one of
- 47:36their best running
- 47:37SPEAKER_01: back recruits of the internet era.
- 47:39SPEAKER_01: Maybe he's able to help out right away.
- 47:41SPEAKER_01: So,
- 47:43You know,
- 47:44I think they return some guys on the interior D-line who can
- 47:47help them.
- 47:47SPEAKER_01: I would imagine that they'll target that position in the portal again.
- 47:51That's kind of the one spot where they haven't built the depth
- 47:55through the 25 and
- 47:56SPEAKER_01: 26 recruiting classes.
- 47:59SPEAKER_01: You've got another year of Alex McLaughlin.
- 48:01SPEAKER_01: Ryland Dillard Allen will be a sophomore.
- 48:03SPEAKER_01: Dylan Robinson will be a sophomore.
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: Zadrius Rainey-Saleh will be either a redshirt freshman or a sophomore.
- 48:08I imagine they're not going to bother redshirting him even
- 48:10halfway through the year.
- 48:11SPEAKER_01: He's not a five-year player.
- 48:14SPEAKER_01: There's a lot to like.
- 48:15SPEAKER_01: It's a young core.
- 48:17And I think I've heard some people kind of compare this team to
- 48:22Chris Peterson's
- 48:232015 team where Jake Browning and Trey Adams and Myles Gaskin
- 48:29are starting at
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: critical offensive positions as true freshmen.
- 48:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: Buda Baker and Sidney Jones are sophomores.
- 48:36Azeem Victor and Keyshawn Bearia are starting at linebacker for
- 48:39the first time.
- 48:40You're seeing what you've got in Elijah Qualls and Greg Gaines
- 48:44and Vita Vea.
- 48:45SPEAKER_01: And,
- 48:45SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: is this a core that's going to go on to win its league and,
- 48:50SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: be one of the top four teams in the country next year?
- 48:53SPEAKER_01: I don't know about that, but I do think you're kind of seeing –
- 48:57you're seeing flashes of young talent that does sort of point
- 49:00to next year having
- 49:01SPEAKER_01: some real potential.
- 49:02And,
- 49:02you know,
- 49:03the biggest piece of that is having DeMond Williams Jr.,
- 49:06right?
- 49:07Like having the quarterback figured out and assuming he
- 49:09continues to progress and
- 49:10SPEAKER_01: impress through the rest of this year.
- 49:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I, you know,
- 49:15SPEAKER_01: The way that people were talking about Illinois coming into this year,
- 49:19SPEAKER_01: I think that could be Washington.
- 49:20SPEAKER_01: No!
- 49:21SPEAKER_02: No!
- 49:21SPEAKER_02: Depending on how it plays out.
- 49:23SPEAKER_02: We don't want any of the bad juju of the over-hyped... No, no, no.
- 49:28SPEAKER_01: We're not talking about results, Danny.
- 49:29SPEAKER_01: The over-promise, under-deliver...
- 49:31SPEAKER_01: We're not talking about results.
- 49:32SPEAKER_01: We're not talking about outcomes.
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: We're not talking about reality.
- 49:35SPEAKER_01: We're talking about the attention economy.
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there we go.
- 49:38I do think they will be positioned to be heavily featured in
- 49:42the attention economy
- 49:44SPEAKER_01: going into next season.
- 49:46SPEAKER_01: And however it plays out, it plays out.
- 49:47SPEAKER_02: They're going to have a lot of the technical term for that is buzz.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: Buzz.
- 49:53SPEAKER_02: They'll have a lot of buzz coming into next year.
- 49:58SPEAKER_01: What's all Buzz McFarlane got for us?
- 50:00SPEAKER_02: Oh, Ian McFarlane.
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 50:02SPEAKER_02: I wonder if his nickname, if he's ever been called Buzz.
- 50:06SPEAKER_02: Could you see that?
- 50:07SPEAKER_02: Buzz McFarlane?
- 50:09SPEAKER_02: Buzz McFarlane.
- 50:10SPEAKER_02: Our conversation with IP McFarlane from IPMcFarlane.com.
- 50:14SPEAKER_00: That was about how we drew it up, right?
- 50:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, go on the road, get a 24-20 win against a solid team.
- 50:25SPEAKER_00: You know, throw for a couple touchdowns, run for one.
- 50:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, like, this is what we were looking for.
- 50:32We don't need to dwell on the fact that I shut off a UW game in
- 50:38the second quarter
- 50:39for the first time in my life and rejoined my wife on the
- 50:46little vacation we were
- 50:47SPEAKER_00: on by the pool.
- 50:51SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 50:51SPEAKER_00: I mean,
- 50:53SPEAKER_00: if we are going to dwell on it,
- 50:55SPEAKER_00: the hero of the weekend is Patrick,
- 51:00the LSU fan by the pool that started speaking with me and
- 51:06called me a word that I
- 51:07SPEAKER_00: don't know if we say on Say Who Say Pod for not watching my team.
- 51:14SPEAKER_00: So I did get back to the room and see the end of that.
- 51:16SPEAKER_00: I...
- 51:20SPEAKER_00: At the risk of saying another word,
- 51:22SPEAKER_00: I think this word's okay on Say Who Say Pod,
- 51:26SPEAKER_00: but at the risk of that,
- 51:28SPEAKER_00: my question this week,
- 51:35SPEAKER_00: is this team a little light in the ass?
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: I love the skill positions.
- 51:44SPEAKER_00: I thought the comeback was really exciting, and I think they have it.
- 51:49SPEAKER_00: I don't think they have much chance against Oregon,
- 51:50but I think they have a chance against every other team on
- 51:53their schedule.
- 51:56SPEAKER_00: But as the injuries continue to pile up,
- 51:59SPEAKER_00: as the gauntlet of Big Ten bruising schedules continues,
- 52:07is the slim nature of the posteriors of UW's big people going
- 52:17to be a problem?
- 52:19SPEAKER_00: I apologize about the recent sound quality.
- 52:21SPEAKER_00: My new mic is on order.
- 52:23So you can see this ugly mug with slightly better sound quality
- 52:29going forward.
- 52:31SPEAKER_00: Be good.
- 52:32SPEAKER_00: Go Dawgs.
- 52:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're a little light.
- 52:36SPEAKER_02: and maybe it's not light because it's not weight,
- 52:39SPEAKER_02: but I would say that their defensive line,
- 52:42their defensive line is not as strong as maybe even your
- 52:48average Big Ten defensive
- 52:49SPEAKER_02: line.
- 52:50SPEAKER_02: That would be my impression.
- 52:53SPEAKER_02: But I thought that the issue that you saw
- 52:56SPEAKER_02: I thought the issue you saw on Saturday,
- 52:58SPEAKER_02: especially in the first half,
- 52:59SPEAKER_02: was just coming around the edge.
- 53:01SPEAKER_02: And Maryland's got a couple of pretty dynamic edge rushers.
- 53:04And on the left side with a backup left tackle,
- 53:07Washington was clearly outmatched there.
- 53:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they've certainly gotten bigger.
- 53:15SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 53:17it's funny that Jed Fish talks about getting bigger and looking
- 53:20at Maryland's
- 53:21SPEAKER_01: defense,
- 53:21SPEAKER_01: and,
- 53:21SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 53:22SPEAKER_01: that's what the Big Ten looks like.
- 53:24SPEAKER_01: It's, you know, long, strong athletes everywhere.
- 53:28SPEAKER_01: I think Washington has that in the secondary.
- 53:35SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 53:37SPEAKER_01: Even with Takario Davis out, because Dylan Robinson is huge too.
- 53:40SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 53:42SPEAKER_01: Alex McLaughlin's a bit slight, but he's 6'2".
- 53:44SPEAKER_02: That dude is a tackler.
- 53:47SPEAKER_01: And he hits.
- 53:48SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 53:49SPEAKER_02: I love him.
- 53:50SPEAKER_01: Him and him and Rylan Dillard Allen together next year.
- 53:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 53:55SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 53:55that's kind of a that's like a potential enforcer back end that
- 54:00they they haven't
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: had in a while.
- 54:02SPEAKER_01: But like a linebacker,
- 54:04SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 54:05SPEAKER_01: Buddha Alukta,
- 54:06SPEAKER_01: Devin Bryant and Jacob Manu are all on the smaller side.
- 54:11they're not the big long athletes that you probably would
- 54:15target out of high school.
- 54:17SPEAKER_01: Um, but you know, neither is Desmond Roebuck.
- 54:19SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 54:20And so like when you see certain traits,
- 54:22then,
- 54:23then you're okay taking it on.
- 54:25SPEAKER_01: But yeah, like they don't have a, they don't have a ton of size upfront.
- 54:29SPEAKER_01: I'm,
- 54:31SPEAKER_01: It's been,
- 54:31SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 54:31SPEAKER_01: their two biggest defensive linemen,
- 54:33SPEAKER_01: Samote Pepa and Logan Sagapalu,
- 54:34SPEAKER_01: who play pretty much exclusively nose tackle in five down fronts,
- 54:39SPEAKER_01: have not gotten on the field a ton.
- 54:40SPEAKER_01: I think Sagapalu was dealing with an injury.
- 54:42SPEAKER_01: He basically isn't part of the rotation.
- 54:46SPEAKER_01: And Pepa is playing like seven to ten snaps.
- 54:50SPEAKER_01: Maybe he played a little more against Ohio State.
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: You know, Bryce Butler's 6'5 and 320.
- 54:55SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 54:57SPEAKER_01: I think the Parker twins are both pretty good size.
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:02SPEAKER_01: They don't have,
- 55:03SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 55:04SPEAKER_01: Ontario Thompson is not the heaviest,
- 55:07SPEAKER_01: but,
- 55:07SPEAKER_01: like,
- 55:07SPEAKER_01: you look at that guy and don't think he's undersized,
- 55:10SPEAKER_01: right?
- 55:12SPEAKER_01: They don't have the big,
- 55:13SPEAKER_01: long,
- 55:13SPEAKER_01: like,
- 55:14SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 55:15SPEAKER_01: 6'4",
- 55:17SPEAKER_01: crazy nimble at 330 pounds or whatever,
- 55:20SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: just these high-level,
- 55:23early-round NFL draft prospects like Ohio State and Alabama and
- 55:28Georgia seem to
- 55:28SPEAKER_01: churn out every year.
- 55:31SPEAKER_02: Throw Michigan in there, too.
- 55:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:35SPEAKER_02: And then Oregon's edge rushers are insane.
- 55:38SPEAKER_02: Oregon has some incredible talent at edge rush.
- 55:41SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I think what you said is accurate.
- 55:44Washington is not threatening to be among the three most
- 55:48dominant defensive lines.
- 55:50SPEAKER_02: It's not an inadequate line either, though.
- 55:54SPEAKER_02: Their defense is more formidable than it was last year.
- 55:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah,
- 55:59and I think the biggest upgrade is just not having too
- 56:05precipitous of a drop-off
- 56:06SPEAKER_01: between number one and number five in the interior D-line rotation.
- 56:11It's not that you'd put one through three up against anybody in
- 56:15the league,
- 56:16but you feel pretty good about rolling your fourth and fifth
- 56:20guys through there for
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: whatever duty is needed.
- 56:23SPEAKER_01: And I think that helps one through three play better.
- 56:25SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I look...
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: Sebastian Valdez is proving to be a pretty good football player, right?
- 56:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 56:35SPEAKER_01: And so they put a lot on him last year.
- 56:39SPEAKER_01: They didn't have like a ton of talent around him up front.
- 56:43SPEAKER_01: And so that changes things.
- 56:44SPEAKER_01: But like,
- 56:45SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 56:46SPEAKER_01: you go from Sebastian Valdez,
- 56:48SPEAKER_01: Jacob Bandus,
- 56:50SPEAKER_01: and gosh,
- 56:51SPEAKER_01: who played the third most snaps for them on the interior last year?
- 56:53SPEAKER_01: It wasn't Alineas Davis.
- 56:57SPEAKER_01: Someone like Alineas Davis has made a move.
- 56:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it changed so much because Parker got hurt.
- 57:01SPEAKER_02: Well, Parker got hurt at Rutgers.
- 57:03SPEAKER_01: Right, like Javon Parker was their best guy, at least for that game.
- 57:08He was literally just starting to emerge as maybe their very
- 57:12best interior D
- 57:13SPEAKER_01: lineman when they lost him.
- 57:15But look,
- 57:16you went from,
- 57:16oh my gosh,
- 57:18this team is completely different without Javon Parker.
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: Wow, that's a huge loss.
- 57:26SPEAKER_01: To opening this season without him.
- 57:29And now looking at the rotation,
- 57:31and he's not going to step right into the starting lineup.
- 57:37SPEAKER_01: I don't think he's going to play snaps over Alineas Davis.
- 57:41SPEAKER_01: And so you basically have three starters there,
- 57:43SPEAKER_01: Ontario Thompson,
- 57:44SPEAKER_01: Taitai Uyunglele,
- 57:45SPEAKER_01: and Alineas Davis,
- 57:46SPEAKER_01: who played like equal snaps against Maryland,
- 57:48SPEAKER_01: even though,
- 57:49SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 57:50SPEAKER_01: they largely have been in four-man fronts,
- 57:51SPEAKER_01: at least in terms of the D-line and edge personnel they put on the field.
- 57:56SPEAKER_01: And so a lot of times it's just two of those guys.
- 58:00SPEAKER_01: Davis has started here and there.
- 58:02SPEAKER_01: Bryce Butler was the first out there for at least one game.
- 58:06SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 58:06I think it's a good problem to have where you're looking at it
- 58:09and thinking,
- 58:10SPEAKER_01: where does Javon Parker fit in,
- 58:12SPEAKER_01: in the pecking order?
- 58:13Because you would have ended last year thinking he's got a
- 58:16chance to be number one
- 58:18SPEAKER_01: going into 2025.
- 58:18SPEAKER_01: And I don't know that he takes snaps away from,
- 58:24SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 58:26SPEAKER_01: unless you're just trying to lighten the load for everybody,
- 58:29SPEAKER_01: away from Uyunglele Thompson or Alineas Davis,
- 58:33SPEAKER_01: who I think is playing well.
- 58:34SPEAKER_01: So,
- 58:35SPEAKER_01: You know, that's one more body.
- 58:38You're going to have Javon and Armand playing together for the
- 58:41first time.
- 58:43Maybe they can actually get those guys on the field together
- 58:45for the first time.
- 58:45SPEAKER_01: That'd be cool in year four for both of them.
- 58:48So this is as healthy and as deep as they've been on the
- 58:51interior D-line for quite a while.
- 58:54Like,
- 58:55you know,
- 58:55look at how different they were without Tuli Latuli and Asanoa
- 58:58in 2023.
- 58:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:00They didn't have the depth then either,
- 59:02and they played for a national championship.
- 59:04SPEAKER_02: He was dealing with that the whole year.
- 59:05SPEAKER_02: I would say that.
- 59:07SPEAKER_02: Last year,
- 59:08the lack of depth along the defensive line made Washington
- 59:15uncompetitive in
- 59:17SPEAKER_02: multiple games.
- 59:19SPEAKER_02: And that's not happening this year.
- 59:21SPEAKER_02: And against Maryland, Maryland didn't push them around.
- 59:26SPEAKER_02: Maryland basically just chipped away on their defense,
- 59:30SPEAKER_02: but it wasn't like they were blowing Washington off the ball.
- 59:32SPEAKER_02: It wasn't like their offense was able to do whatever it wanted.
- 59:36SPEAKER_02: It was sort of a drip,
- 59:37SPEAKER_02: drip,
- 59:37SPEAKER_02: drip attack that eventually,
- 59:39SPEAKER_02: and eventually they shut the faucet off.
- 59:42SPEAKER_02: But yeah,
- 59:43SPEAKER_02: in general,
- 59:44SPEAKER_02: they definitely could get stronger,
- 59:48SPEAKER_02: but you've seen market improvement there.
- 59:52Yeah,
- 59:52I think they are what they are this year,
- 59:55and the arrow is pointing up.
- 59:58SPEAKER_02: I think that's fair.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 1:00:01I think there's some thought that Derek Coleman-Brusa becomes
- 1:00:03an interior player
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_01: once he gets to Washington.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: They're signing...
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah,
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: I think he's the sort of athlete who can do it all,
- 1:00:13but if he can give you those pass rush skills playing in the
- 1:00:20middle instead of on
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_01: the edge,
- 1:00:22and if you feel like you can get enough else from some of the
- 1:00:25edge rushers you have
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_01: in the program,
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_01: then I think that's probably the path,
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_01: but...
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_01: You know, you never know, right?
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_01: Like every,
- 1:00:32I feel like it's said about every high level edge prospect at
- 1:00:35some point that like,
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_01: oh,
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_01: well,
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_01: but he's got the friend,
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_01: he could,
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_01: he could grow into a three tack or whatever.
- 1:00:41It's even harder to project at Washington with Ryan Walters
- 1:00:43because of the fronts he uses.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_02: I mean, you really, you see five-man fronts.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_02: It is hard to project exactly what they're doing.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_02: But yeah, you do hear it about every elite level pass rusher.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_02: They're like,
- 1:00:56he could put on some weight and be inside because every
- 1:00:58defensive coordinator is
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_02: like,
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_02: man,
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_02: you can get somebody like Aaron Donald.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_02: You see what that guy does to people?
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_02: You don't know how it's going to work out.
- 1:01:07In large part because those guys are never going against people
- 1:01:10that are stronger
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_02: than them when they're in high school.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_01: Fair to assume that Oregon remains number one.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_02: Yes, in our Pac-12 power rankings.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_02: No shakeup at the top.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_02: Although we do have a showdown this week.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_02: It's very interesting, the tiers of the Pac-12.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_02: We have Oregon at the top.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_02: Then we have four teams that are 4-1.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_02: Arizona State, USC, Washington, and Utah.
- 1:01:35Some of this will sort itself out this week because Utah and
- 1:01:38Arizona State.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_02: How do you rank those four?
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_02: ASU, USC, Washington, Utah.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I had...
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_02: I had that order last week, I believe.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_02: I did too.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_02: I'm vaulting Washington ahead of USC.
- 1:01:54Partly because of Lincoln Riley's whining and partly because I
- 1:01:57want to give
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_02: Washington credit for going on the road and beating Maryland.
- 1:02:00Washington did do what USC could not do last year,
- 1:02:02which is win at Maryland.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_01: I'm going to keep the same order, two through five.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_02: Then we've got, well, actually there's five, because five 4-1 teams.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_02: And then there's Arizona.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_02: Arizona is the ranked sixth, I think, very clearly in the conference.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_02: They are not in the conversation with those teams above them.
- 1:02:22They just drubbed Oklahoma State,
- 1:02:24who is one of the worst programs in the country this year.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, incredible how far they've fallen, but we knew that already.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_01: Cal, next at 4-2 is Cal's seventh.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_01: They just got smacked by Duke at home.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_01: Beat down by Duke.
- 1:02:42But,
- 1:02:45I mean,
- 1:02:48obviously not Oregon State or UCLA,
- 1:02:51despite their shocking win over Penn State.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_01: Not Wazoo.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_01: Colorado's struggling too much.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_01: I go Colorado 2-4.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_02: They lost to TCU, but it was respectable.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, on the road.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_01: Another fourth quarter got away from them.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I'll go Cal 7 and Colorado 8.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_01: Then we've got a choice between Stanford and Wazoo.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_02: Stanford, 2-3.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_02: They just edged out San Jose State, 30-29.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_02: Cougs had a bye.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_02: They are 3-2.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_02: Did I have Wazoo ahead of Colorado last week?
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_02: Well, I don't know.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_01: I might have.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_01: I'm comfortable with Wazoo ahead of Stanford.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_02: I would agree with that.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_02: And then now we've got the choice between UCLA, Oregon State.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_02: Does UCLA vault ahead of Stanford?
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_02: I think so.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_02: I read... I think so.
- 1:03:50I read that this was the first time in like 40 years that a top
- 1:03:5310 team had lost to
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_02: a team that was 0-4 or worse.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_02: Essentially meaning,
- 1:04:00which isn't a great because it could be 1-7 and that wouldn't
- 1:04:03qualify for that.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_02: But a winless,
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_02: a team that had played more than four games and gone winless,
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_02: it's the first time a top 10 team had lost to one of those.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_01: I can't think of a more surprising upset than...
- 1:04:19Cal losing like it did to San Diego State was not shocking for
- 1:04:24the fact that like
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_01: San Diego State beat Cal.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's Cal.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_01: But the margin was crazy.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_01: Like I could not possibly have predicted that margin.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_01: UCLA beating Penn State and scoring 42 points.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, UCLA, I thought UCLA was going to go 0-12.
- 1:04:41And that's the Penn State team that has been building toward a
- 1:04:45national championship.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_02: They'd just gone to overtime with Oregon.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_02: Felt like, oh, that's a team you're going to see again.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_02: And then they go out and lose at UCLA.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_02: And now people are talking about James Franklin.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_02: Like, if he loses again, they're probably not getting in the playoff.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_02: And he might be cooked, even though he's got a $50 million buyout.
- 1:05:01Every national writer together in unison after that game had
- 1:05:04the same take of Penn
- 1:05:06State and James Franklin should work out a mutual separation
- 1:05:09and he should take
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_01: another job somewhere.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_02: So funny.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_02: Is that because people just, that James Franklin annoys people?
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_01: Boy, they sure don't like him at Maryland.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_01: Um...
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_01: No, I mean, well, I think he does a little bit.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_01: But I think it's just,
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_01: look,
- 1:05:26you already have been dragging around this reputation that you
- 1:05:30can't win the big
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_01: one.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_01: That's been well earned.
- 1:05:34You're coming off of not winning the big one at home,
- 1:05:36wide out night against a top Big Ten team.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_01: Another chance for a big win.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_01: You don't get it.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_01: And then you go lose at UCLA.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_01: Like,
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_01: if they'd won that game 52 to 10,
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_01: people would still be annoyed about the Oregon loss.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_01: So I think it's like, like, it's been a long time.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_01: You haven't gotten over the hump.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_01: This is a really good program that wins a ton.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_01: That is the envy of most of FBS.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_01: But.
- 1:06:10You know,
- 1:06:10you just can't get over that,
- 1:06:13can't get past that,
- 1:06:14like,
- 1:06:15can't beat good teams thing.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_01: And even last year,
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 1:06:19going to the playoff and they didn't really have to beat
- 1:06:22anybody to get where they
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_01: got last year.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_01: So I could see it just.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_01: I could see how people there can get to a point where I just,
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_01: let's see what someone else can do.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_01: We know what the ceiling is with James Franklin and it's not good enough.
- 1:06:40And I could see whoever they hired to replace him not coming
- 1:06:43anywhere near winning
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_01: as many games as he has there.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_01: Sorry, Oregon State.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_01: Maybe next week.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_02: Lose to Appalachian State.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_02: That one was tough.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_02: Did you see, last thing from me, did you see Sark's quote?
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_01: I didn't, no.
- 1:06:57stark was being grilled about it he asked he asked what there's
- 1:07:00136 uh teams in the
- 1:07:02country you see how many of them would fare if they go up on
- 1:07:06the road to play at
- 1:07:07ohio state and then play at florida it's like totally
- 1:07:13unreasonable to expect a team
- 1:07:15that was ranked number one in the preseason to go play and win
- 1:07:18at one in three
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_02: florida
- 1:07:21That's not what folks want to hear from the head coach at the
- 1:07:27University of Texas.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_02: Joel Anderson, who he played at TCU.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_02: He was a running back at TCU.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_02: I believe was once the fastest 10-year-old in the country.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_02: Maybe it was 12 years old.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_02: At some point, he was a grade school.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_02: He now works at the Ringer.
- 1:07:40He has a thing he uses called LOL Longhorns when Texas does
- 1:07:46something that he deems
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_02: embarrassing,
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_02: and that was an LOL Longhorns.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_01: I'm going to dive a little bit deeper into Rutgers later this week,
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_01: Thursday,
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_01: I guess,
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_01: short week.
- 1:07:57But this is a top 30 passing offense in college football this
- 1:08:02year in both yards
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_01: per attempt and efficiency.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_01: Ethan Kaliak-Manus putting up a lot better numbers than he did last year.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_01: They are on a two-game losing streak,
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_01: having lost to Iowa and Minnesota,
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_01: and they were off last week,
- 1:08:18the third of three consecutive opponents Washington's facing
- 1:08:22with that team coming
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_01: off of a bye.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_01: Before we get going, silver lining to Washington's 9 a.m.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_01: Pacific time kickoff at Michigan on October 18th.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_01: Michigan plays at USC at 4.30 Pacific time this coming Saturday.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_01: So Washington will finish its game against Rutgers at about 9 p.m.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_01: Friday, give or take, at home.
- 1:08:48Penn State,
- 1:08:49or excuse me,
- 1:08:50Michigan will arrive back in Ann Arbor,
- 1:08:53I figure at like 7 a.m.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_01: Sunday or something like that.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_01: After a, what is a 7.30 p.m.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_01: Eastern time kick in Los Angeles.
- 1:09:04SPEAKER_01: So...
- 1:09:05You get not just an extra day of prep going to play at
- 1:09:08Michigan,
- 1:09:09though it is a 9 a.m.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_01: kick.
- 1:09:14You get some additional hours because of the long trip back
- 1:09:17home after what is an
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_01: East Coast night game on the West Coast for Michigan.
- 1:09:21So if you're looking for little advantages or disadvantages,
- 1:09:25just pointing that out.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_02: Feel good about it.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_02: I'm excited.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_02: I'm looking forward to the Friday game.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_02: Looking forward to seeing how they fare at Michigan.
- 1:09:36Last week I said I thought the Michigan game might be the most
- 1:09:38important of the
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_02: season,
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_02: and I really hope that is true.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_02: I hope that it is the most important game for them.
- 1:09:46I think they're about nine and a half point favorites against
- 1:09:48Rutgers this week.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, this is maybe even more so than Maryland.
- 1:09:55This is where like the extra week for Rutgers to prepare could
- 1:09:58show up because
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_01: Washington's coming back from the East Coast on a short week.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_01: Granted,
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_01: it was,
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_01: they get time back coming home and it was a 1230 Pacific time kickoff.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_01: But they're beat up.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_01: It took a lot,
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 1:10:12maybe maybe had a large emotional expenditure to to win that
- 1:10:18Maryland game.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_01: And now you got to turn around and play on a Friday are playing at home.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_01: But I do.
- 1:10:25I think this will be another challenge to to get them up and
- 1:10:27get them ready to play.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_02: It's so much easier when you have the second half they had though.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_02: It's so much like if compared to reversing it,
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_02: what it would feel like this,
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_02: it's so much easier to feel that all of those things are not eliminated,
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_02: but you do get the benefit of feeling like,
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_02: man,
- 1:10:46we figured it out mid game and we've got this thing turned in
- 1:10:49the right direction
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_02: right now.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_02: I'm, I'm, I'm, I am, I am optimistic about this game.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_02: I feel good about where they're headed.
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_01: Thanks to everybody listening everywhere.
