Latest / Paranormal Lens - A Crossroads Of Curiosities, LLC Production / Pere Cheney: NEW documentary reveals the truth behind Michigan’s most famous haunting
Transcript
- 0:00Hidden in North Michigan is a clearing in the
- 0:02woods. This field I'm walking through, you wouldn't
- 0:05know, used to be a thriving, bustling village.
- 0:08There are 22 ghost towns. Pere Cheney is one of
- 0:11them. If you're thinking of a haunted cemetery
- 0:14in Michigan, this is exactly what you would picture.
- 0:18It's dark, it's secluded. Did you just hear that?
- 0:22Once that sun goes down, it just becomes a different
- 0:26place. This is the story. of Pere Cheney. Oh my
- 0:31god! Plague in the Pines. I don't know what's
- 0:37happening right now. Okay, so we just finished
- 0:44watching a film called Pere Cheney, Plague in the
- 0:50Pines. Not a short film. This is a film film.
- 0:56Feature -length film. Feature -length film film.
- 0:58First ever feature -length film. Film, film.
- 1:03Film, film, film, film, film. And this is not
- 1:06a dream, dream, dream, dream, dream. This is
- 1:09real -life shit. We just finished putting together
- 1:13our first ever feature -length film in collaboration
- 1:16and association with Nunsaucequatch Production
- 1:19and What Goes Bumpin' Late Podcast, also working
- 1:22very closely with the Crawford County Historical
- 1:24Society. We are talking, of course... That's
- 1:27a name suggests about Pere Cheney, very well -known
- 1:31haunted Michigan. So I'd say actually Brie, it's
- 1:34the most famous like urban legend in Michigan.
- 1:38Would you agree? I mean, you're kind of biased
- 1:40because you live right by it. I'm biased because
- 1:42I've known about it my whole life, but I feel
- 1:45like most of like the rankings or things that
- 1:49you see online about most haunted places in Michigan,
- 1:52Pere Cheney is always on the list. And any paranormal
- 1:57investigator you know in Michigan knows about
- 1:59Pere Cheney, has been to Pere Cheney, or wants
- 2:02to go to Pere Cheney. Because that is, like, the
- 2:05ghost town of Michigan. It's so... Of northern
- 2:10lower Michigan. Yeah, yeah. I mean, even in,
- 2:12like, the UP, it's, like, so classic. ghost story
- 2:17like everything falls into place like just perfectly
- 2:19to create the perfect ghost story welcome to
- 2:23our podcast where we take deep dives looking
- 2:25at various topics through a paranormal lens Pere Cheney
- 2:31had 1500 people in it it was you know for the
- 2:34local county seat at one point bustling boomtown
- 2:38Yeah, because the railway came through. That's
- 2:41a significant part of the whole story. And they
- 2:44had hotels, restaurants. It was a thriving village
- 2:48until diphtheria came through. Twice. Twice.
- 2:53And wiped out much of the town. And back then,
- 2:58they didn't know really what to do. So they just
- 3:00stopped the trains from coming in. And everyone
- 3:03was just kind of, if you got diphtheria. Sucks
- 3:06to suck, man. No one's coming in to help you.
- 3:09You're not leaving. You're staying there. You're
- 3:11on your own. They were fully cut off from everywhere
- 3:17else. It was a death sentence. And unfortunately,
- 3:21that led to a decline in the town. I mean, there's
- 3:25all these rumors now about it, like a witch that
- 3:28cursed a town and caused diphtheria. So even
- 3:31in time, the fact that this tragedy, Tragedies
- 3:36dropped to such a scale twice, and the town that
- 3:39was set to be thriving and booming went from
- 3:431 ,500 people to, I think it was, what, at the
- 3:46time when the town eventually got burned down.
- 3:52They say that, you know, some local people from
- 3:55a couple towns over came and burned the city
- 3:57down just because they thought it was cursed.
- 3:59At that time, there was only, like, 18 people
- 4:01living there. So it went from 1 ,500 to 18. And
- 4:05through that fire, everything got destroyed.
- 4:08All the buildings, all the records, all the documentations,
- 4:12all the photos, everything. Nothing exists. This
- 4:15is the most ghost town of ghost towns. Because
- 4:18usually with other ghost towns... There's at
- 4:20least historical records. You can actually look
- 4:24back at the history. Usually, it's not just fully
- 4:28burned down. There's still some records somewhere.
- 4:32And... For a while, I mean, even today, all that
- 4:36remains is the cemetery. So, like, there's this
- 4:38abandoned cemetery in the middle of the woods.
- 4:41I mean, if you go deep in the woods, there are
- 4:43still, like, foundations. Yeah, you can see,
- 4:46like, where buildings used to be if you know
- 4:48what you're looking for. And, of course, a railroad
- 4:50track, which played a big part in this town's
- 4:53history, is still there and is still active.
- 4:56But there's this cemetery. And that's all that
- 4:59remains of this ghost town, literally. For a
- 5:01while. Get this. They don't even know who's buried
- 5:06in that cemetery because for a while, after all
- 5:10the records burned down of, you know, people
- 5:13buried, people that live there, they're like,
- 5:15well, at least we have the headstones that tell
- 5:19us who's buried there. Well, not for long. Yeah.
- 5:24Because all those headstones eventually got vandalized,
- 5:29broke, stolen. Now there's only like five or
- 5:33six headstones you can actually fully make out.
- 5:35So there's only five or six actual names that
- 5:38remain of the entire town. Unfortunately, Pere Cheney
- 5:42was one of those spots that the local high school
- 5:46kids would go to party and drink and have bonfires.
- 5:51And they would vandalize the cemetery. They'd
- 5:54steal headstones. They'd break headstones. Like,
- 5:58who's out there to stop them? It's literally...
- 6:01In the middle of nowhere. Do you think there's
- 6:04someone out there who just has a random headstone
- 6:07in their house from pure shame? Either that or
- 6:11it's hidden under their porch or something. Because
- 6:14they're like, oh shit, I shouldn't have this.
- 6:16I don't know what to do with it. Like someone
- 6:20local? Yeah, definitely. Have you ever been to
- 6:25someone's house and they're just like, look at
- 6:26this headstone I stole? Is that normal? No. Is
- 6:29that like a Grayling thing? I don't think that's
- 6:31legal anyway. Yeah, it's not legal. Most of that
- 6:35happened before my era of being in high school.
- 6:41What about your era, though? Because you are
- 6:44local, to reiterate. Were you ever invited to
- 6:46any Pere Cheney parties? I wasn't invited to any
- 6:48parties. I wasn't that cool. I don't think any
- 6:52of us who's sitting here right now was ever...
- 6:56invited to any parties yeah uh no but my sister
- 7:00she also went to high school in grayling and
- 7:04her friends used to party out there and one of
- 7:08the stories that she always told me was And I
- 7:11knew this person, too. He was out there one night
- 7:14just chilling with his buddies, having a bonfire.
- 7:17I don't think it was at the cemetery. It was
- 7:19at the clearing that we camped at. Yeah, so if
- 7:22you go past the cemetery, there's like a clearing
- 7:24in the woods that used to be like a town hub.
- 7:26Yeah, it used to be where the town was. There's
- 7:28like a bonfire there. People obviously go out.
- 7:31But they were having a bonfire, and all of a
- 7:34sudden they had a little kid run up on them.
- 7:37and at the time they're just like that's super
- 7:40weird like oh my god are you okay little kid
- 7:43like you're in the middle of the woods in the
- 7:45middle of the night and then they were looking
- 7:47at him and they're like you aren't You're wearing
- 7:52period piece clothes. And they're like, oh, my
- 7:54God, like, are you okay? Like, still processing
- 7:56this interaction. Because who would think as
- 7:58it goes? Exactly. Wait, so was the kid having,
- 8:01like, a full -on conversation? No. So they're
- 8:03like, oh, are you okay? Like, do you need help?
- 8:05Like, trying to see what's up with this little
- 8:07kid. And then, poof, gone. He just vanished.
- 8:10So no talking from him. No. Like, he ran up on
- 8:13them. I never heard this. I have told you guys
- 8:17about this multiple times. Okay, this is like
- 8:19the whole situation about like you guys telling
- 8:22me things and I don't remember. Yeah, we were
- 8:24just talking. There's like certain stories we
- 8:26tell Bree and then every time we tell her, like
- 8:28she acts surprised like, you never told me this.
- 8:31This must be the equivalent for us because we
- 8:33filmed a whole feature -length film, film, film,
- 8:36film, film out there. Oops. Hold on. It's not
- 8:45supposed to do that. Now to line up all this
- 8:51shit, extra editing. I hate this. This isn't
- 8:53supposed to be an edited podcast. What? All right,
- 8:56welcome back from that shit. I'm recording to
- 9:00the cloud. But somehow my computer said, nope,
- 9:07you cannot record to the desktop. And I'm like,
- 9:12I'm not recording to the desktop. I don't know
- 9:14what you're talking about. And I still had to
- 9:17stop the recording. Save the file. Restart recording.
- 9:21Let's hope nothing happens again. This isn't
- 9:25the first weird technical issue to happen with
- 9:27Pere Cheney. The whole hard drive issue that happened
- 9:33a couple months ago now. There was one casualty
- 9:39and it just so happened to be... some footage
- 9:42from Pere Cheney. Um, and I didn't realize that
- 9:46until late in the editing. I was like, well,
- 9:49I forgot about that. Yeah, it was, we were, uh,
- 9:51Tara, we were kind of like split up and, and
- 9:53Tara, who's like a witch from Canada that came
- 9:57down to film with us. She was doing a little
- 9:59ritual and, uh, she was in the woods doing that
- 10:03while we were in, uh, the cemetery and other
- 10:06parts of the woods, like kind of separated. and
- 10:10when she was doing her stuff we had a lot of
- 10:13stuff happening uh evp wise we were catching
- 10:16evps same moment she heard voices interrupting
- 10:20her ritual we heard voices on the other side
- 10:24of the woods so it was like really cool things
- 10:26lining up but all our footage is gone um doesn't
- 10:30affect the film or the narrative at all you know
- 10:33you still get out of it that she's out there
- 10:36doing her thing and she's sharing her interpretations
- 10:39of the events and she's hearing voices doesn't
- 10:42necessarily add or detract from the fact that
- 10:44we heard voices as well but still we don't have
- 10:48that footage yeah uh another thing is and this
- 10:52is funny we were editing um i i was lead editor
- 10:56but also tommy uh tombstone uh from a non -sasquatch
- 11:00production he was the director of the film so
- 11:03when we got time we were actually like making
- 11:05uh directorial you know story narrative cuts
- 11:09for the film you know obviously he's directing
- 11:11so uh he's kind of leading um what i'm editing
- 11:14so throughout the process i would be kind of
- 11:17over zoom uh or or uh stream yard just kind of
- 11:22live streaming with each other so uh we're kind
- 11:25of remotely virtually editing together on much
- 11:28of the project um Been doing it for months now,
- 11:33no problems, as soon as the film was done. And
- 11:36we go through to do a final pass of the film
- 11:40before exporting. He is like, hold on, something's
- 11:47happening. And then he gets booted from the stream.
- 11:50And he says, this has never happened before.
- 11:52My internet is out for some reason. And he couldn't
- 11:57access internet on his computer. And he had no
- 12:01idea how to fix it. Finally, he fixed it. Hasn't
- 12:04had any problems before or since. Then last night,
- 12:07we tried watching the film all together for the
- 12:10first time. And literally... Same thing happens.
- 12:13Literally, with one minute left, the last minute
- 12:17of the film, the internet just went out. And
- 12:21I was like, deja vu? But then, we were just chit
- 12:26-chatting. And five minutes later, the internet
- 12:29is back. I didn't even do anything. Yeah. You
- 12:31usually have to, like, reset, you know, the modem
- 12:35or whatever. This is such, like, a typical pattern
- 12:38for us. Yeah. With specifically Pere Cheney. Yeah.
- 12:43So. Because we've had in the past, like, because
- 12:45you're from the area. We've investigated, the
- 12:50two of us, before. you know we started any of
- 12:54this to film i mean the film is a couple years
- 12:56in the making because we were kicking around
- 12:58the idea to do it for like three years and every
- 13:01time we would plan to go up and film something
- 13:04there would be some like i don't know we're like
- 13:07flash flooding warning or like some crazy shit
- 13:09um one of the times too it said like it's gonna
- 13:12be a terrible you know you know how like april
- 13:15sometimes we get like blizzards like like it's
- 13:19like okay Fake spring one, okay, fake spring
- 13:21two, okay, get a blizzard. One time it said,
- 13:24like, there's going to be a blizzard, and we're
- 13:26like, we can't film. Yeah. Some people were driving,
- 13:28you know, several hours, like I said. Canceled
- 13:32the shoot, never ended up snowing at all. Yeah.
- 13:34So it was just, like, weird shit that even, like,
- 13:37up until trying to get out of there. But we've
- 13:40investigated in the past, and we've had, like,
- 13:42voice recorders stop working and stuff. Yeah.
- 13:45Yeah. Voice recorders, cameras, definitely. A
- 13:50bunch of camera issues, my gosh. Always camera
- 13:52issues. I don't think I know of a different place
- 13:57that we've had that many camera issues before.
- 14:00On occasion, we'll have camera issues, but not
- 14:03as often as Pere Cheney. You are guaranteed to
- 14:07have a camera malfunction when you're at Pere Cheney.
- 14:11My phone malfunctioned when I was trying to take
- 14:13photos. All my photos disappeared randomly. half
- 14:19of them pop back up only like only some of them
- 14:21not all of them and another time i think it would
- 14:25be fun because okay so the film is an hour and
- 14:3020 something minutes it's like a feature film
- 14:32film film film film and even then it it could
- 14:38have been a four or five hour film with all the
- 14:41stuff all the stuff that happened so much stuff
- 14:43that was not included exactly so let's start
- 14:45usually when we do these like recaps of like
- 14:50a new project that's out it's all just like so
- 14:53here's the place now go watch the film we don't
- 14:57want to spoil anything let's spend the rest of
- 15:00this episode just talking about all the shit
- 15:02that didn't make the cut and then everyone's
- 15:05gonna be listening like wait wait that didn't
- 15:09make the cut what did make the cut because in
- 15:12other instance that was all on camera angela
- 15:15was you know the photographer of the film She
- 15:18was taking photos. Half her photos disappeared.
- 15:21And then afterwards, some of them reappeared.
- 15:23But still, she has missing files, malfunctions.
- 15:26Remember we were filming back in the foundations?
- 15:30Where the old buildings were? Yeah. A light tipped
- 15:33over. Oh, yeah. I forgot about that, actually.
- 15:36And then one turned back on. And then my lens
- 15:39on my camera, which you have to hold down a button,
- 15:41twist, and pull off. The lens fell off. And I
- 15:46had to catch it. You're so pissed for me. That
- 15:50felt like I was mad. Ghosts, you're not allowed
- 15:55to do that. You can't take an expensive lens
- 15:58off my camera and throw it at a concrete foundation.
- 16:05press and twist yeah it's not possible that whole
- 16:07experience in that foundation that we had that
- 16:10isn't in the film was just so charged like there
- 16:15were so many things that happened and it like
- 16:18thinking about it it really wasn't a lot but
- 16:22just it felt so energetic like there were Because
- 16:27we had the light tip over and then we had the
- 16:29camera lens fall off. And I think we had some
- 16:32creepy voices that were coming through the spirit
- 16:34box, too, that didn't want us there. But, yeah,
- 16:38it's just a weird circumstance. It's weird, but
- 16:42if you're making a film, which this is a film,
- 16:46film, film, film, film. Film, film, film. It's
- 16:48an aesthetic film, too. The whole thing is black
- 16:50and white except for the fire. which anything
- 16:53that's like five years orange so we're like editing
- 16:56and we've been editing for a while and we have
- 17:00a deadline at this point because we're so close
- 17:02to having it finished that now we're in talks
- 17:05with like distribution and stuff which is you
- 17:08know by the time you're hearing this it's streaming
- 17:10currently on paraflix so we're already in talks
- 17:13with paraflix already like we have a date set
- 17:17and we're just like doing like fine tuning stuff
- 17:20like just like fixing like the audio levels and
- 17:22stuff and then tommy's like what if we just swap
- 17:26in a black and white and then make the fire just
- 17:28like no one thing on color is that doable and
- 17:31i'm like you mean by tomorrow then he's like
- 17:36yeah i i don't know can you do that and i'm like
- 17:40editing to like two in the morning get it done
- 17:44So I'm like, yeah, I can do that. So that was
- 17:48like an aesthetic decision in the last minute.
- 17:50But anyways, this is like an aesthetic film.
- 17:54So if you are thinking about us out there, the
- 17:59light, our only light source is on the ground
- 18:01and won't turn on. So it's like dark as can be.
- 18:04You can't film that in general easily. And then
- 18:08the lens is off the camera. You can't film at
- 18:12all. there's no nothing to film yeah so that's
- 18:16hard to put in a film especially if it's just
- 18:19like you're trying to build a narrative like
- 18:20where does it even fit in which is just so crazy
- 18:23because it's like i don't know i feel like we're
- 18:26the same way it's like if if we're making a project
- 18:32like this we're prioritizing the things that
- 18:34benefit the story yes so if we get five evps
- 18:39and one has to do like really like fits right
- 18:45in with like the puzzle pieces fits in with the
- 18:47interviews it helps propel the story forward
- 18:50yes and the other evps are like because we we
- 18:54got a crystal clear evp too that's not in the
- 18:57film got a lot yeah a lot but one in particular
- 18:59so clear says i don't like you what if that doesn't
- 19:05if i did we do If it's between that and something
- 19:10that's... Because if you have to pick and choose,
- 19:12that doesn't contribute to the story at all.
- 19:14Yeah. Not that we're saying that that stuff isn't
- 19:18important and great to catch, but for reasons
- 19:23for filming and creating a production, there's
- 19:26just some things that don't make the cut. And
- 19:30I'm sorry, but every time... Because I'm coming
- 19:33at it from a film perspective. Every time...
- 19:37quote unquote evidence is always going to be
- 19:40the first to go if i have to make cuts because
- 19:43it really at the end of the day think back to
- 19:47any episode of any ghost show you've watched
- 19:49right do you remember how many evps episode uh
- 19:53107 of ghost ventures caught if i told you they
- 19:57caught four evps would that impress you any less
- 20:00than if i told you they caught five evps yeah
- 20:03no But if I told you that was, I'm just making
- 20:06sure, if I told you that was like Alcatraz, would
- 20:10you be like, oh yeah, Alcatraz, I know that place.
- 20:12And you know the story behind the location. The
- 20:16story always is going to... And that's the important
- 20:19thing with this documentary is it isn't like
- 20:24the... doing the ghost hunting and the investigation
- 20:26is just a bonus to what we were trying to do
- 20:29which was trying to do that deep dive into Pere Cheney
- 20:33that hasn't been done before to fit together
- 20:35those puzzle pieces and find those like the history
- 20:38that hasn't really been talked about because
- 20:41like you like we said in the film like there
- 20:45isn't a lot of information out there so that
- 20:48is that was the goal of the of the film was to
- 20:53get this information out and the ghost hunting
- 20:57part the ghost was a bonus yeah it compliments
- 21:01yes well and another thing too we were doing
- 21:03like i said the the main legend if you go online
- 21:07is this the witch what what the hell fucking
- 21:11kidding me as soon as i say the witch the witch
- 21:13okay let us try take three third times the charm
- 21:19also It's funny because the film itself, I had
- 21:24to submit to Paraflex three different times because
- 21:28there's weird export glitches and errors. And
- 21:32like, I would fix one thing like we watched it
- 21:35five million times and I exported. I'm like,
- 21:38OK, it's final. And I'm like, that shot. literally
- 21:41the first shot it's not supposed to lag like
- 21:43that what what the heck so i re -exported after
- 21:45already submitting it and then there was a weird
- 21:47audio glitch that was obnoxious i'm like where
- 21:51did that come from and i'm like all right paraflex
- 21:53third time's the charm so maybe uh we'll continue
- 21:56that trend here but do you think people are gonna
- 21:58watch it it's gonna have any issues hope not
- 22:01hope not um it'd be so interesting but yeah the
- 22:06same issue happened again um where What happened
- 22:10was the first time, which we've done in -person
- 22:12recordings all the time, and I record on this
- 22:14computer all the time for various stuff, freelance
- 22:17stuff. Yeah, he knows what he's doing. I recorded
- 22:20to the cloud so there wouldn't be any issues.
- 22:23Then I said, your computer, like your desktop,
- 22:26you can't record to the desktop. I'm like, I'm
- 22:28not. And then I tried again because I was like,
- 22:31okay, I'll put in the external drive, record
- 22:34to the drive, just so there's no issues. And
- 22:37then I said, yeah you can't you can't record
- 22:40to to the drive i'm like what so i can't record
- 22:43at all so like my computer won't let me record
- 22:45so now i'm in zoom doing a zoom meeting with
- 22:49myself uh just to record via a different different
- 22:54like route to kind of cheat the system um of
- 22:58course right when i mentioned the witch yeah
- 23:01um which my whole witch my whole point was that
- 23:05in the film I made it. It was a fun challenge
- 23:09for me. I had fun. I was like, how long can I
- 23:13go without mentioning the witch at all? Oh, yeah.
- 23:16And it took 20 minutes. I was like, I can't go
- 23:19longer than 20 minutes. But that's such a good
- 23:22idea to do, though. Because that's not the whole
- 23:24story. It's not even like. That's like a legend.
- 23:27Yeah. It's not even fast. It's folklore. Yeah.
- 23:31It's not. That's not proven to be real. It is,
- 23:35yeah. It's not important to, like, the town,
- 23:38really. Yeah. It's an interesting side note.
- 23:42Yeah. But nothing about it can be proven. And
- 23:46then the whole thing, too, there's allegedly
- 23:48a witch's tree where the witch was allegedly...
- 23:52And you will see that everywhere. When you look
- 23:55up this town online, the tree will come up. But
- 23:59there's different reports of what the tree is.
- 24:01Currently, there's a stump that used to be a
- 24:04tree that people leave offerings. A lot of people
- 24:07will tell you that that used to be the tree,
- 24:10the hanging tree. And there's also reports that
- 24:12there was a headstone that the witch was actually
- 24:15buried there. And then the local sheriff in town
- 24:17stole the skull. from this grave and i didn't
- 24:22put that because i didn't want you know the sheriff
- 24:24to that's still alive to arrest us for incriminating
- 24:28him well that's not in there i don't think it
- 24:30was the current sheriff but that's fair that's
- 24:33fair yeah i think it was to be clear that's speculation
- 24:36yeah that's speculation none of this is factual
- 24:40yeah but there's always crazy light and then
- 24:42you heard from as a local person and we also
- 24:46talked to other locals remember when we investigated
- 24:49many years ago this like local emt came out with
- 24:52us too everyone has a different idea of which
- 24:55tree was the hanging tree because he like they
- 24:58told like i remember it as being the one of the
- 25:02oak trees that's all the way in the back and
- 25:04then there's some people who think it's that
- 25:05big one that's right there in the center and
- 25:08it's like what is it yeah and a lot of people
- 25:11say the historical society told us it was that
- 25:13stump with people leave offerings at the front
- 25:16yeah so we didn't even mention the hanging tree
- 25:20or the stump or any of that in the film just
- 25:23because it's like this clear pattern of folklore
- 25:26where you have one seed of a story and different
- 25:30versions of it yeah um but right when we arrived
- 25:34at the stump we did investigate this stump because
- 25:38you have to people you have to right when we
- 25:40showed up to the stump start recording because
- 25:43we've been in the cemetery the whole time already
- 25:45but we haven't looked at the stump so we came
- 25:48up to the stump to like get some footage start
- 25:51like do a session or whatever it starts raining
- 25:55yeah and this is full downpour but it's weird
- 25:59though because it wasn't it didn't have like
- 26:02rain clouds in the sky it was like this it was
- 26:04funny it was and but when it started raining
- 26:07it was like this one little cloud right above
- 26:10us that that was what was downpouring on us but
- 26:14it was still sunny like everything around us
- 26:17was like the sunshine was still showing and stuff
- 26:21yeah so we yeah because like we're like oh my
- 26:24god it's downpouring let's go sit in the cars
- 26:26for a second by the time we got to the cars it
- 26:29was done raining yeah like it was like as soon
- 26:33as we got to the stump it started raining yeah
- 26:36walked away walked back to the stump and it it
- 26:39wasn't a downpour but it was started it was sprinkling
- 26:41just a little bit yeah it was it happened twice
- 26:44it was like what so we just we just didn't really
- 26:48do it we didn't get anything investigating there
- 26:51but it was still a very odd odd coincidence but
- 26:56like it was just coincidental very was it just
- 27:02like when i said I said witch and then the computer
- 27:05died. Should we try? Witch! Oh my god. No. 1,
- 27:112, 3, witch. 1, 2, 3, witch! You have to do it.
- 27:16Kill my computer with the power of the witch.
- 27:19Are we accusing the computer of being a witch?
- 27:23Witch! Witch crap! Oh my god, it did it again!
- 27:28No, I'm kidding. I sentence your computer to
- 27:32death for witchcraft. No, don't do that. No.
- 27:38I think we just wrote out that the witch is in
- 27:42my computer. It's a plague in the pines, not
- 27:46a plague in the... Plague in a ghost in the ghost
- 27:50machine. Would that be the virus? Oh, is this
- 27:54a modern day diphtheria? We did have two rounds
- 27:58of it. Yeah. Yeah, we did. Yeah. What else happened?
- 28:03So we split up. Yeah. A couple times. A couple
- 28:08times. That was kind of, we realized that there's
- 28:11so much ground to cover. And everyone that goes
- 28:14out there only focuses on the cemetery. And that's
- 28:17a mistake. Because that's the only thing that's
- 28:19left. People don't really know about the foundations
- 28:21or anything. Yeah. They're hard to find. You
- 28:24don't really know about them unless you know
- 28:26somebody who knows somebody. Or, you know, a
- 28:29local, which even I as a local didn't know where
- 28:32like the old foundations or the town used to
- 28:35be. Well, something I found most shocking in
- 28:39the film when we were talking with the Historical
- 28:42Society, what you can see as a cemetery now,
- 28:46which Riley Clark, he got some incredible drone
- 28:50video and you can see from. aerial view like
- 28:53there's clearly it's a big cemetery it was four
- 28:57times bigger yeah there's four times as many
- 29:00graves that are even visible in the woods into
- 29:03the woods like the full -grown woods like that's
- 29:08part of the cemetery and there's a mass grave
- 29:10out there there's a mass grave somewhere in the
- 29:12woods yeah but nobody knows where so but what
- 29:17was your guys's favorite that didn't make it
- 29:22into the film. I got it. What is it? The monster
- 29:26on the railroad track. Oh, yeah. We were... There's
- 29:30a creepy moment that happened that made it in
- 29:34the film. This was coming back from the cemetery.
- 29:37Yes. That was in the film. I wasn't with them
- 29:39at this point. We had split up. This was when
- 29:40we split up. I was with... You were in the clearing.
- 29:43Yeah, I was in the clearing at the bonfire. And
- 29:46then, yeah, there at the bonfire, we're... Apparently
- 29:49a little kid ran up on your sister's friend.
- 29:52Oh yeah. Which I didn't know until now. And we
- 29:56were in the cemetery and we were coming back.
- 29:58So we were crossing the railroad tracks to meet
- 30:00back up with them. And Trevor from what was bump
- 30:03in the night saw an end of the railroad tracks.
- 30:07And what he described as like, and again, I'm
- 30:09totally butchering and this is his story, but
- 30:12he saw like a giant shadow mass. He described
- 30:16as like, It was underneath one of the lights.
- 30:21Yeah, there's like streetlights. Yeah. And it
- 30:24was giant. He looked like a monster. Just like
- 30:28a giant thing. And he was like really shaken
- 30:30up. But it was too far to be able to get on camera.
- 30:35You couldn't see. But you could see with your
- 30:36eyes. You saw it too? I did see something go
- 30:40across the railroad track. What did you see?
- 30:43To the extent that you saw. So there's something.
- 30:47I didn't know you saw something. Because I was
- 30:48focused. Because I was doing like double duty.
- 30:50I was doing thermal and all this stuff. So I
- 30:52missed it. Because I didn't have anything in
- 30:55my hand. So I was just like looking down there
- 30:57like he was. I wasn't filming or anything. But
- 31:01you saw it. You definitely acknowledged there
- 31:03was something at the end of the railroad tracks.
- 31:04Oh, 100%. It really scared me too. Was it bigger
- 31:09than like if a person was just down there? Oh,
- 31:11100%. Hmm. I don't know. Interesting. I don't
- 31:16know. I don't know what it was, but it was weird.
- 31:20He definitely saw something, because I kind of
- 31:22saw something, too. I don't think I saw it to
- 31:24the extent he saw it, but... Because he was staring
- 31:27at it. You must have saw it right when it, like,
- 31:29moved away or something. Something like that,
- 31:31yeah. Were there any other moments? I mean, we
- 31:34were talking about, like, a giant monster or
- 31:36something on the end of the railroad tracks,
- 31:39potentially. Were there any moments that surprised
- 31:41you in the moment? But then when it came to actually
- 31:46putting the film together, you're like, yeah,
- 31:50in the grand scheme of things, that didn't really
- 31:53make the cut. Like, I can kind of see why. Because
- 31:57so much happened. Like I was saying, we got so
- 31:59much EVPs. So, so many like small experiences
- 32:03that in the moment we were just like engaged.
- 32:06We did like multiple investigations. We're engaged
- 32:08the whole time. Yeah. Oh, we should. We mentioned
- 32:13this on the podcast. We had a series of EVPs.
- 32:17Oh, yeah. In the film, we have a really clear
- 32:21EVP saying witness when we were asking about
- 32:25the fires. We said, did you witness the fire?
- 32:28Then this really clear voice says witness. It
- 32:30was like a little girl or something. And after
- 32:33that, we had a whole series of responses that
- 32:37were like responding to our questions. And the
- 32:40most memorable one to me was like, oh, do you
- 32:42like playing any games? And it had said ring
- 32:45around the Rosie. Yes. And of course, we didn't
- 32:50hear it at the time. So we're like, oh, do you
- 32:51like playing tag? And then right after that,
- 32:55just a little girl's voice said tag. And then
- 32:58we never heard anything again. That was the most
- 33:01memorable and awesome EVP. It was like it said
- 33:04tag and then ran away. Waiting for us to catch
- 33:08her or something. But you were saying that when
- 33:12you guys went in to look at this or listen to
- 33:16these EVPs to potentially put them in the film.
- 33:20They didn't come across like that. No, they were
- 33:22not there. It did not sound like it. No. But
- 33:24in the moment when we were there in the cemetery,
- 33:27listened to the recordings, we listened to them
- 33:29multiple times, and there was how many of us
- 33:31there who heard this voice? All of us heard it.
- 33:36It was so clear. And for it to just not sound
- 33:40clear at all makes no sense to me. No. We talked
- 33:44about it on this podcast. We did. Yeah. Yeah.
- 33:47and that's the thing it's like in the moment
- 33:49we're like this is this is like that's like peak
- 33:52evidence like we we can end the film on this
- 33:54this is like we're talking to someone they're
- 33:57giving us real indication on who they are you
- 34:00know this ties in with so much of the the story
- 34:04and where it's building and bubbling up to at
- 34:05this point this could be like the the finale
- 34:07this could we could end on this yeah and then
- 34:10you go back and you're like We got 10 EVPs and
- 34:13you can only hear the first one. But you can
- 34:15hear the first one so clear. Yeah, you can hear
- 34:17the first one. That's just mind -blowing. That
- 34:20was like a moment where it's like... They were
- 34:22going to end with it. That's how clear and profound
- 34:26it was. And then the fact that you couldn't even
- 34:30add it. We don't like spoiling things. And we
- 34:33even spoiled that on this. But we were like,
- 34:35we have to talk about this. Because it was so
- 34:38cool. I have never... had that because it was
- 34:42like back -to -back responses to our questions
- 34:45and then it's just you can't hear them do you
- 34:50think it's because we talked about on the podcast
- 34:52like we jinxed it probably If you want to understand
- 35:07why we're laughing, you should watch the film.
- 35:13We're not going to spoil anything. What we're
- 35:17talking about all episode is the stuff that didn't
- 35:19make the cut. So this is not spoilers. So none
- 35:22of what we're talking about is a spoiler. But
- 35:25if you want some peak Shining Sisters bullshit
- 35:29that these two do. They... Mm -hmm. It's gonna
- 35:36haunt your nightmares after watching Pere Cheney
- 35:40Plague in the Pines. Mm -hmm. Yeah. Mm -hmm.
- 35:45Mm -hmm. Mm -hmm. It's gonna be super interesting,
- 35:49like, once this premieres and potentially, like,
- 35:56releases in Grayling at the Rialto. to see what
- 36:01the local population has to say about it, their
- 36:05comments on it. I'm sure they're going to probably
- 36:09be like, oh, I want to share my story. So it
- 36:11would be really cool to be able to have a way
- 36:14to have people submit their experiences and potentially
- 36:19do a follow -up later interviews. Maybe someone
- 36:25will return a headstone. Yeah. No, we were talking
- 36:29like it's an hour 22 or something, hour 23. We
- 36:33can easily, in six months from now, you know,
- 36:36do a couple interviews at a, you know, in -town
- 36:40premiere. Yeah. Have some of this unseen footage
- 36:44that we'll probably be posting on social media,
- 36:46but incorporate some of that. Easily get up to
- 36:49an hour 30 for an extended cut just to kind of
- 36:52keep the momentum going down the road. Might
- 36:56even get up to two hours. Who knows? We might
- 36:59have outtakes from the outtakes. We definitely
- 37:01have enough stuff, yeah. And then also, Pere Cheney
- 37:07is one of 22 ghost towns in Crawford County.
- 37:12So, we have 21 sequels to make, too. I feel like
- 37:18a lot of them are not as well preserved as...
- 37:22Well, I mean... Pere Cheney really isn't preserved
- 37:24either. All that remains is the cemetery. I mean,
- 37:27the only other one that I have kind of been to
- 37:33is Duard. And all that's left of that is like
- 37:38the old stone pillars of a sawmill. That you
- 37:46know of. That I know of. I mean, that's the thing
- 37:49with Pere Cheney. I mean, we'll just end on this.
- 37:52The biggest find was not paranormal. Anyone that
- 37:55thinks that nothing remains of Pere Cheney Ghost
- 37:58Town is actually incorrect. There's lots of bodies
- 38:01that remain. And there's a place you can go that's
- 38:07original to the Pere Cheney Ghost Town and you
- 38:09can actually go inside. It's a structure. But
- 38:12you gotta watch to know more. Because we went
- 38:15inside and it's potentially... just as if not
- 38:19more haunted too in the cemetery similar connections
- 38:23you know to that type of activity experience
- 38:25as well yeah um so if you're curious about a
- 38:31major historical discovery and that's another
- 38:34thing too it's like maybe when this gets out
- 38:37we can get money to preserve it better and yeah
- 38:40who knows who knows make sure that It gets its
- 38:44proper due and people know this place exists
- 38:46and it gets preserved for history. All right.
- 38:50Well, I'm glad the witch let us finish this episode
- 38:53in peace. Took three times to export the movie,
- 38:56three times to record this podcast. Now Ben has
- 39:01to do editing that he didn't want to do. No,
- 39:03I usually don't edit this podcast. Let's just
- 39:08end on another one, two, three witch. Send people
- 39:11home with. With a little bit of mystery and intrigue,
- 39:14okay? One, two, three. Witch! Thanks for listening
- 39:19to this week's episode of Paranormal Lens. If
- 39:22you liked what you heard, every five -star rating
- 39:24and positive review tells the algorithms we're
- 39:27a worthy podcast and pushes us out to more listeners.
- 39:30We appreciate each and every one of you, and
- 39:33we'll see you next Thursday for another paranormal
- 39:35deep dive. Mm -hmm. Mm -hmm.
