- 0:07The Buffalo Bills faced the New York Jets at Shea Stadium for Week 14 of the 1973 NFL season on Sunday, December 16th, 1973.
- 0:16The Jets were coached again by Wee Bubank in his 11th season.
- 0:20The team had steadily declined since winning the Super Bowl in 1969, in part to drone Namath's repeated issues and missed games due to injuries.
- 0:28The Bills had won the AFL Championship in back-to-back years in the mid-1960s under coach Lou Saban.
- 0:34He then left the Bills and Buffalo spiraled into the cellar, only winning a total of nine games in four years from 1968 to 71.
- 0:42There was one bright side to this failure, however, and that was getting the number one draft pick in 1969 and selecting running back OJ Simpson.
- 0:49In 1972, the Bills hired Lou Saban back as their coach, and he decided to center the offense around OJ, giving him 20-25 carries a game, nearly double what he was getting previously.
- 1:00He led the league with 1,251 yards in 1972, and in 1973 he had his eyes on history.
- 1:07He broke the 1,000 yard mark during Week 7 and entered the final game of the season with 1,803 yards, just 60 yards shy of Jim Brown's record and a big game away from taking a shot at 2,000 yards.
- 1:18This audio recording is from the radio broadcast featuring announcers Marty Glickman and Larry Grantham.
- 1:48The first time the two teams played, OJ ran for 123 yards. It's the only time he surpassed 100 yards in his nine previous games against the New York Jets.
- 2:09Well, I think that the New York Jets have a history of playing against the great backs. They play good football games against the better backs. Jim Nance, when he was having his great years up at the New England Patriots, never gained 100 yards against the New York Jets football team.
- 2:23I think Al Atkinson was one of the reasons that Jim Nance never gained that yardage. Al Atkinson, he had to pull back, keep him from getting that yardage, and as you know, Al Atkinson was injured in the Buffalo game up in Buffalo earlier this year and missed a greater part of the ball game.
- 2:38So OJ sent him to the restaurant and 23 yards. We'll have the answers to many of the situations posed by the ball game today. This is Marty Glickman with Larry Grantham, and after station identification and a 90-second message, we'll be back for the Jets-Buffalo Bills football game.

- 4:57From J Stadium in New York City, it's NFL football as the New York Jets beat the Buffalo Bills.
- 5:03Good afternoon, everyone. This is Marty Gluckman with Larry Grantham welcoming you to the New York Jets Radio Network.
- 5:09And before Larry gives you the starting lineup for our last game of the season, let's have this brief message about each of our sponsors.
- 5:16Today's game is brought to you by the Mem Company, makers of famous English leather products for men.
- 5:21English leather power foam shave cream, English leather aftershave, English leather soap on a rope, and English leather deodorant stick.
- 5:31WABY.
- 5:35The Buffalo Bills starting lineup has just been introduced.
- 5:39And along with it, the Raw from the crowd welcoming OJ Simpson back into J Stadium.
- 5:45The New York Jets defensive unit will be introduced now. And to give you the starting lineup, here's Larry.
- 5:50Thank you, Marty. Hello, everybody.
- 5:52First, the defensive starting lineup of the New York Jets, since they did lose the toss and will be kicking the football off.
- 5:58At left end, number 80, John Elliott. At left tackle, number 57, John Little.
- 6:02At right tackle, number 81, Dick Neal. Number 84, right end, Mark Lomas.
- 6:06The linebackers from left to right, Ralph Baker, number 51 to left.
- 6:10John Ebersole, 55, in the middle. And Bill Ferguson, number 58, to right side.
- 6:14The defensive backs, Dennis Howell, left corner, number 20, Berkett Lowen, number 22, at strong safety.
- 6:1927, field wise, free safety.
- 6:22Early Thomas, number 45, will be at right cornerback.
- 6:25And now the starting off is the team of the Buffalo Bills.
- 6:28At the split end position, number 40, JD Heal. Left tackle, 78, Dave Foley. Right tackle, 74, Donny Green.
- 6:35At the left side, number 67, Joe Jeloman-Lurin, at right guard, number 68.
- 6:41And the center, Mike Montler, number 53.
- 6:44The flagger back today will be number 81, Bob Chandler.
- 6:48Running backs will be layer-wide, number 38.
- 6:51And of course, the man who is most likely to care the football in the first play from scrimmage, number 32,
- 6:5661 yards to break Jimmy Brown's all-time rushing record, OJ Sub.
- 7:00The quarterback will be Joe Ferguson.
- 7:02That's Ricky, a quarterback, Larry.
- 7:05It's been announced double the public address system, and you can tell by the reaction of the crowd
- 7:09that your name will start a quarterback the first time the New York Jets have possession of the football.
- 7:15There will be a brief ceremony now here in the snow and the cold,
- 7:20where the New York Jets as a team will present a gift to their departing coach, Wee Bubank.
- 7:27You know, Larry, they talk about Wee being head coach for 20 years, as he has been, nine with Baltimore,
- 7:3311 with the New York Jets, and three world championships.
- 7:37But actually, he's been coaching 46 years in high school, college, in the service,
- 7:45and in both of the major professional football leagues.
- 7:49They're going through the ceremony now around second base of simulating the thoughts,
- 7:53and we want to stay on instead of breaking for the commercial at this juncture
- 7:59so that we can properly hear the comments by the captain of the New York Jets
- 8:05and by the coach of the New York Jets coaching his last ballgame.
- 8:09Larry, this is the most emotional day I believe we could ever be in the life of a head football coach.
- 8:13As you said, 20 years coaching pro football, but many more years just coaching football altogether.
- 8:19But this is, I was in the locker room prior to the game, and Wee Bubank is really emotional.
- 8:24Emerson Booza, number 32, is out at the 35-yard line in front of a pair of microphones,
- 8:29along with Ralph Baker and Winston Hill, three of the old pro veterans of the New York Jets,
- 8:34three of the best have it a play for Wee Bubank.
- 8:37And Wee Bubank in a green great coat, his traditional white base ball cap on the New York Jets.
- 8:46And out from the open end of the stadium comes a small tractor truck, a combination,
- 8:53and as you know, it's all about Wee, and a whole bevy of photographers out at the 35-yard line
- 9:01on the grass portion of the field.
- 9:04And this little tractor truck is plundered out, rolled out.
- 9:09It'll be used by Wee.
- 9:11Trying to pick up his comments now.
- 9:14That's Emerson Booza making the presentation.
- 9:34Emerson Booza saying that his tractor is fully equipped with rotor blades,
- 9:40shoveling facilities for the snow, snow clearing facilities,
- 9:45as well as for the various uses of this tractor truck, which can be used at his home in Long Island.
- 9:52Weeb taking the hands now of his three players out there,
- 9:57and Weeb apparently will not say any words at all.
- 10:00You were with him just a few moments ago before the ball game,
- 10:04before the team came on the field, Larry, and I understand he was quite choked up.
- 10:08He certainly was, Marty, and as we see Coach Eubank get into the riding lawn mower itself,
- 10:13alongside Weston Hill, Ralph Baker, and Emerson Booza,
- 10:16this crowd is really enjoying this whole moment.
- 10:20So we'll be back with more about today's game right after this message.

- 11:06And a great Christmas idea, a One Stop Give certificate.
- 11:11Music playing.
- 11:34Music playing.
- 12:01Music playing.
- 12:20The color guard in the center of the field now, out there alone,
- 12:23as the national anthem was played and sung.
- 12:28A good-sized crowd here, they're still pouring into Shea Stadium.
- 12:32It could be close to capacity today.
- 12:35We don't know how many no-shows will be present.
- 12:37There are patches of open seats here and there at Shea.
- 12:40But despite this 29-degree weather and this falling snow,
- 12:44the place is almost filled as of now, and people are still coming into Shea Stadium.
- 12:50Three men have been activated for the ballgame for the New York Jets, and three deactivated.
- 12:55Jim Nance at fullback for John Riggins, Mike Taylor at linebacker in place of Bill Zapalak,
- 13:01and Gary Petz in the line in place of Bob Cuius.
- 13:04Those three, Nance, Taylor, and Petz, at the action today,
- 13:08Riggins, Zapalak, and Cuius will not be in uniform today.
- 13:12It's a far cry from a year ago for John Riggins when he had twice the total yardage that he has so far this year.
- 13:19It's been a tough year for John Riggins.
- 13:21He didn't come to camp early due to contract problems. He joined the team at the start of the season.
- 13:26He just hadn't really performed as he did a year ago, Marty.
- 13:29So he just hadn't attained the yardage that he had this time of the year.
- 13:33And now ready to kick off is Bobby Houghfield kicking in towards the closed end of Shea Stadium.
- 13:37Waiting at the goal line are Wallace Francis, a rookie, and Ray Jarvis, a third-year man.
- 13:42Here's the kickoff. The kick is a low, twisting kick going over to the far sideline.
- 13:45It might go out of bounds. It's rolling out snow.
- 13:48It's been bounced by Francis along the far sideline up to the 20 to 25 along the far sideline.
- 13:52From a loose ball, it goes out of bounds.
- 13:55And it's still the Buffalo Bills in possession of the football.
- 14:01And with the OJ Simpson's number 32, the same number won by Jimmy Brown as he goes out on the field.
- 14:07We'll keep both track of his yardage during the course of the afternoon.
- 14:10The ball is placed in bounds at the 29-yard line.
- 14:13Well, Marty, do you really think you'd go care the ball in the first place in scrimmage?
- 14:16A lot of points have been made that if he needs 64 carriers to gain 61 yards to set the record today,
- 14:22he'll get those 64 carriers.
- 14:24There's no better place to start than on the first place.
- 14:26That's right. A lineup in the I-formation, a winged tee.
- 14:30Braxton is playing fullback in front of OJ Simpson.
- 14:33Signals are being called. Blanket on the right side of the rest of the ball club is tight.
- 14:36Ferguson takes it. Gives it to OJ.
- 14:38Drives it to the middle goal for five, four yards before he stops up to the 33-yard line.
- 14:43From the 29 of the 33, so give him four yards on the play,
- 14:4757 yards more to go for Jimmy Brown's record.
- 14:50It'll be second and six, the ball at the 33-yard line on the Buffalo Bills.
- 14:56And as we view back, they're in the course of the week.
- 14:59Winning the ball game is primary. Records will come or not.
- 15:04But winning the ball game is most important.
- 15:07It's second and six at the 33-yard line.
- 15:10Again, the I-formation, the sign-blanket on the left side.
- 15:13Bob Chandler is on the flank. The rest of the team is tight.
- 15:15Braxton in front of OJ.
- 15:17Signals are being called by Joe Ferguson, the rookie quarterback.
- 15:19Gives to OJ again. He drives up right tackle.
- 15:21Picks down on the clear of the ball. Up to 40 to 45. He can go all the way.
- 15:24He's doubled and forced, and he's down at the 40-yard line of the New York Jets.
- 15:28A brilliant run again for OJ.
- 15:31He's finally pinned at the 38-yard line of the New York Jets.
- 15:36Big yardage on the play.
- 15:38I believe he's 24 yards there, Marty.
- 15:41On my calculation, kind of quickly, that would leave him with only his number to get,
- 15:4632 yards, to go over the mark.
- 15:48Well, it's first and 10, ball to Buffalo Bills.
- 15:51The ball is at the New York Jets. 38-yard line.
- 15:53The crowd responding to OJ's brilliant run.
- 15:56All but on right tackle, and straight down the field.
- 15:59First and 10 at the 38-yard line of the Jets.
- 16:01Again, the I-formation on the backfield.
- 16:03Braxton in front of OJ.
- 16:05He's got a handoff again, OJ. The same play. Now he swings outside.
- 16:08Cuts up right tackle. He's just at the 35 to the 34-yard line.
- 16:11He picks up 4 yards more.
- 16:13It'll be second and sixth at the 34 of the New York Jets.
- 16:16Three running plays and three times OJ Simpson has carried the ball.
- 16:20Well, what did you expect?
- 16:22I expected him to catch, and he gets 6 to 1 yards to set the record,
- 16:25and then possibly even catch farther, because I think this team wants that
- 16:28rushing record that is within reach set by Miami a year ago.
- 16:32277 yards this afternoon to attain this goal,
- 16:35and I believe they're going out there to get it.
- 16:37It's second and sixth at the 34 of the New York Jets.
- 16:40Flank and T formation down on the flank to the left side of Sparks.
- 16:43Now he comes in motion to the left side.
- 16:45Chandler is moving, running over to the near side.
- 16:47And the handoff goes to Pax. Pax drives up the middle.
- 16:49It goes inside the 25 to the 23-yard line where he stops.
- 16:52Jim Braxton carrying the ball. Big number 34 on the fullback.
- 16:55And he carries it down to the 23-yard line.
- 16:58Another first down for the Buffalo Bills,
- 17:00and they're really chewing up that New York Jets defense,
- 17:03running between the tackles thus far, with the exception of one play,
- 17:06when OJ went outside.
- 17:08Ball is at the 23 of the New York Jets.
- 17:10His first to stand out the 23-yard line as the Buffalo Bills.
- 17:14White jerseys, blue pants, white helmets, red and white trim.
- 17:18Big goal of the line to Skimmick.
- 17:20Again, the wing T formation on the wing is Chandler.
- 17:23Now Chandler again comes in motion to the left side.
- 17:26Braxton in front of OJ, steps in on the I formation.
- 17:28The handoff to OJ, a tap in the middle, he drives downfield.
- 17:31Goes inside the 20 to the 19-yard line.
- 17:33He picks up 4 yards 4.
- 17:35So it'll be second and sixth at the 19-yard line.
- 17:40As this drive continues, it began on the 29 of the New York,
- 17:44rather of the Buffalo Bills.
- 17:46It's now down to the 19 of the New York Jets.
- 17:49Coming over to the near sideline on that last play is Donnie Green.
- 17:52Has an equipment change.
- 17:54Being replaced in there by Bob Pinchion.
- 17:57OJ has carried 4 times thus far for a total of, let's see now, 43 yards.
- 18:04That sounds about right.
- 18:06I think he's got about somewhere in his 20s left to go.
- 18:0920 yards to go for OJ Simpson for that record.
- 18:11Second and sixth at the 19-yard line of the New York Jets.
- 18:13Signals to talk.
- 18:15Handoff to OJ Simpson, drives off right tackle.
- 18:17Fills through this down to the 13-yard line as he picks up 6 yards on the play.
- 18:2213 yards more to go to set a new National Football League record, breaking the old mark of Jimmy Brown.
- 18:29They'll be measuring on this last play.
- 18:31It was second and sixth.
- 18:33And he picks up 6 yards.
- 18:35And the Austins are being called for from the far sideline.
- 18:37Looks like he does have a first half up here, Marty.
- 18:39But this jet defensive team is not doing anything different.
- 18:42OJ and the Bills are just putting the ball straight at them.
- 18:45They're using all different fronts that the Jets have in their repertoire.
- 18:48As we see the referee call the first bounce,
- 18:51they're using the same fronts they've used all year.
- 18:53They didn't change anything for this ball game.
- 18:55They've still got the same defensive unit in there they started a week ago.
- 18:58And they're playing the same type of football.
- 19:00Unfortunately Buffalo is blowing that defensive line out right at the moment and moving the ball upfield.
- 19:06It's first and 10 at the 13-yard line of the New York Jets.
- 19:09No score on the football game.
- 19:11The Bills are picking the ball from the opening kickoff.
- 19:13A boot down to the Jets.
- 19:1413-yard line.
- 19:15First down coming up.
- 19:18A wing-tee formation to the left side.
- 19:20Shandler is on the wing.
- 19:21The rest of the ball club is tight.
- 19:22Handoff again goes to OJ.
- 19:23Sips it right up through to the outside.
- 19:24He cuts inside.
- 19:25Dives down to the 9-yard line.
- 19:27Flies forward.
- 19:28And he was hit down at the 9.
- 19:30He picks up 4 yards more.
- 19:31On every play thus far, he's picked up at least 4 yards,
- 19:35except for that long run, the first of the ball game for him,
- 19:39from his own 33 to the New York Jets' 38-yard line.
- 19:42The ball plays down at the 9.
- 19:44I make it he has some 16, some 12 yards more to go.
- 19:48Either 10 or 12 is right in that neighborhood.
- 19:50I believe our statistician over here says somewhere in the neighborhood is 10 yards.
- 19:54His second and sixth at the 9-yard line.
- 19:56He can't make it on this drive, apparently.
- 19:59His second and sixth at the 9-yard line.
- 20:01Wing-tee to the left side.
- 20:02Signals are being called.
- 20:03And now Simon's taking it for the moment.
- 20:05I probably mark it as thrown down.
- 20:07We don't know the reason why.
- 20:09Flying out of the play.
- 20:10Procedure of some sort, I believe.
- 20:12And the officials are talking together.
- 20:15And here comes the signal now.
- 20:17Timeout is now called by the Buffalo Bills.
- 20:19The reason the flag dropped, Marty, I believe the son rose up and asked for a new football.
- 20:23That wouldn't be a little damp with the snow.
- 20:25But when he moved up, the back yard just called a motion penalty on the Buffalo Bills.
- 20:30So now they've changed it to a timeout.
- 20:32I don't think we'll see any penalty on the play.
- 20:34It's second and sixth at the 9-yard line.
- 20:39Coming back to number 9 again is Donnie Green, number 74, replacing Robert Pinchion.
- 20:43His first drive for the Buffalo Bills.
- 20:45He's ahead of the course by O.J. Simpson, who's picked up all but 10 yards of the 61 yards required.
- 20:55For that new NFL record, it's second and sixth at the 9-yard line.
- 20:59A winged tee to the right side.
- 21:00O.J. Simpson behind Big Jim Braxton.
- 21:03Big Jim is 243 pounds.
- 21:05Handoff to O.J.
- 21:06Trying to swing wide.
- 21:07Tuts off left tackle.
- 21:08He keeps running.
- 21:09He's down to the 4-yard line.
- 21:11Picked up 5 yards more on the play.
- 21:13It'll be third and one.
- 21:15The ball at the 4-yard line.
- 21:16Let's see where they place it.
- 21:17That's a 3-yard line.
- 21:18And it's going to be very close to the first down again.
- 21:20Remember, the series began at the 13.
- 21:22They're now down to the 3.
- 21:23And it is the first down.
- 21:24The signal's just being given.
- 21:25It's first and goal to go at the 3-yard line.
- 21:28He has 4 yards more to go to set that new record of 1,864 yards.
- 21:36But the ball is at the 3-yard line.
- 21:38So I think they'll make it by 1 yard on this drive.
- 21:43I don't think it'll be the only time that they're going to have a football though, Marty.
- 21:46I think it's well within reach now.
- 21:48And I think O.J. will get that here in the first quarter.
- 21:51First and goal to go at the 3.
- 21:538 minutes and 55 seconds remain on the first quarter.
- 21:55No score on the football game.
- 21:57Joe Ferguson calling signals.
- 21:58Looking right and left as he does.
- 22:00It's a blanket speed to the right side.
- 22:02The handoff goes to Braxton.
- 22:03Braxton goes up the middle and goes for a yard, maybe 2, to about the 1- or 2-yard line.
- 22:07A big pile up there and he's stopped by the middle of the line.
- 22:10John Elliott along with John Little and Dick Neal combining to stop him.
- 22:13The ball plays down at the 1-yard line.
- 22:15Second goal to go at the 1.
- 22:18No score on the football game.
- 22:19The drive began on the 29 of the football bills.
- 22:22Now down on the 1-yard line of the New York Jets.
- 22:24And we haven't been given a lot of credit so far to the Jets' defense and who makes the tackles and so forth.
- 22:28We're just trying to keep up with the yardage and see exactly where O.J. Simpson is
- 22:32and so we'll know the exact moment that he breaks the yardage barrier that Jimmy Brown said many years ago.
- 22:37Second and goal to go at the 1-yard line.
- 22:40A blanket tee wide to the right side is Chandler.
- 22:42Signals being called by quarterback Joe Ferguson, number 12.
- 22:45Takes it and he hands it to Braxton who drives to the left and he can't get in there.
- 22:50He's held upright and driven back.
- 22:52Bill Wise leading the defensive charge.
- 22:54Number 27, Bill Wise and John Eversole, number 55, holding big Jim Braxton upright
- 23:00and stopping him at about the 1-yard line again.
- 23:02It's third, goal to go on the 1.
- 23:05Joe Ferguson came over the near sideline, number 12, the quarterback.
- 23:08He's the rookie out of Arkansas.
- 23:11Came over these near sideline.
- 23:12He's perhaps going to play from Coach Lou Saban.
- 23:16Third, goal to go at the 1-yard line.
- 23:19I kind of have a feeling that Mr. O.J. Simpson will carry the football on this play.
- 23:23No score on the ball game.
- 23:24Third, goal to go on the 1.
- 23:26Signals being called by Ferguson.
- 23:27O.J. still needs 4 yards for that new record.
- 23:30Signals are being called.
- 23:32The handoff goes to Braxton.
- 23:33He goes to the goal line and he does not get in.
- 23:35He does not get in.
- 23:37Braxton went off left guard and he did not get in.
- 23:41A fine defensive play made by early Thomas of games, passing up along with Bill Ferguson.
- 23:47So it's fourth and goal to go at the 1 and it looks like it's going to go far.
- 23:51Marty, I believe it's here exactly right there.
- 23:53They're going far. Neither one of these teams can, unless the right circumstances happen,
- 23:58Buffalo can't get into playoffs.
- 23:59The Jets are clearly not going to playoffs, but they're going far down to 1.
- 24:02If they don't make it to that great field position, I don't think they'll throw the ball in the end zone.
- 24:06I think they'll give it to the Jutes.
- 24:07I believe they'll try to get O.J. in the end zone.
- 24:10Fourth and goal to go at the 1-yard line.
- 24:12That's up at the flank of the seat on the right side.
- 24:13Ferguson calling.
- 24:14Signals still calling them.
- 24:16Still calling.
- 24:17Takes a step.
- 24:18He gives to Braxton.
- 24:19Braxton goes to the goal line.
- 24:20He's in.
- 24:21Touchdown.
- 24:22Braxton went in on the zone.
- 24:23That's gone.
- 24:24And Bill Wise is jumping up and down, waving his arms, jumping up and down and saying,
- 24:28oh, no, no, he didn't get in, but Jim Braxton did get in, according to the officials, and
- 24:32that's all that matters.
- 24:33Bill and Bill Wise here trying to stop the play.
- 24:36And of course there we see a more valuable O.J. center than people realize because he
- 24:41led the play.
- 24:42He led Jim Braxton in the end zone, actually, and made one of the key blocks.
- 24:46Seventy-one-yard drive for the Buffalo Bills.
- 24:49And they lead the ballgame by a score of six to nothing.
- 24:52They have a hundred and six yards to go to set a new record for national football league
- 24:57play in a single season for a team of Russia.
- 25:00A little more set by the Dolphins.
- 25:02Signals are being called down.
- 25:03Ball a snap, lays down and booted for the point after, and it's good.
- 25:06There's a timeout on the field that scores.
- 25:09The Buffalo Bills, seven, the New York Jets, nothing.
- 25:11There's nothing like the snap of clean, crisp football weather to heighten your sense of
- 25:15smell, like when you smell burning autumn leaves or hot dogs and hot coffee, her perfume,
- 25:21or the clean, crisp scent of English leather aftershave.
- 25:25And once she smells English leather aftershave or cologne on you, she'll know that unique
- 25:30scent anywhere, outdoors or indoors.
- 25:33So drop her a hint.
- 25:35She'll find a wide variety of English leather at fine stores everywhere.
- 25:39Tell her you're a guy who wears English leather, or nothing at all.
- 25:44When you take a medicine, you should follow label directions, but some people have excuses.
- 25:49Oh, you can read labels in the middle of the night.
- 25:53A tablespoon's gotta work faster than a teaspoon.
- 25:57I can't wait, Ty. Jimmy's crying.
- 26:01Sorry, there is no excuse.
- 26:03The label tells you what it's for, how much to take, and when to take it.
- 26:07Read the label directions.
- 26:09Medicines can't help you if you don't take them right.
- 26:11From the Council on Family Health.
- 26:14W-A-B-Y
- 26:21On that 71-yard drive by the Buffalo Bills, O.J. Simpson carries for 57 of the 71 yards.
- 26:28He needs four yards more, but right now John Lee Pol is ready to kick off for the Buffalo Bills,
- 26:33kicking off to Hank Pajofan and Marjeanne Atkins.
- 26:37He moves forward and boosts the ball out towards the open end of Chase Stadium.
- 26:41A long, good kick coming way out to Marjeanne Atkins.
- 26:44Three yards in the end zone, he's running it out.
- 26:46Along the right sideline, up to the 15, the 20. Hits out at the 20-yard line.
- 26:49Right smack out at the 20, maybe the 21-yard line at the near sideline.
- 26:53So it'll be first and 10 for the New York, just the first time they have possession of the football,
- 26:56and Joe Namath will take over.
- 26:58That's exactly not going Marty, Joe Namath coming in the ball game.
- 27:01You don't really expect to see Joe play on a field such as this,
- 27:04and a snowstorm like we're having here, at least, worries, it's not really a storm.
- 27:09But Joe wanted to play this ball game.
- 27:11I think this is some way to contribute to we do by Joe Namath.
- 27:16First and 10 at the 21-yard line.
- 27:18Maybe in Mississippi this is a snowstorm.
- 27:20It is in Mississippi.
- 27:22First and 10 at the 21, any bell flanks wide to the right side.
- 27:25Eye formation on the backfield.
- 27:26Adam Lee in front of Anderson Boozer, the handoff coach Adam Lee goes up the middle,
- 27:29can't find a hole, tries to swing wide.
- 27:31The line of skimmage, a difference back, a one-yard loss on the play to the 20-yard line.
- 27:35Tony Green, free safety, came smashing up quickly,
- 27:38and the ball placed down at the line of skimmage again, at the 21-yard line.
- 27:41Jerry Patton left tackle defensively, number 77, broke through and stopped Adam Lee at the line of skimmage.
- 27:48He tried to pull around and failed to do so.
- 27:51That left defensive end for the Buffalo Bills is Wal Patelsky, number 85,
- 27:55and I understand the businessmen in Buffalo, New York have put up a $4,000 reward for him
- 28:00to give to multiple sclerosis if he gets a quarterback or slacks a quarterback behind the line of skimmage
- 28:06at least once this afternoon.
- 28:07So we'll keep our eye out for that too.
- 28:09Wal Patelsky, number one draft trust in the NFL a couple of years ago, back to pass his aim,
- 28:13is setting up, throws out to the left flat, and is caught there by Anderson Boozer in the flat.
- 28:17He slips out from under, and he's pinned immediately on the play by Dwight Harrison, the right cornerback.
- 28:23A one-yard gain only up to about the 22-yard line, a pass out into the flat,
- 28:28and as Anderson Boozer tried to maintain his footing, his feet flipped out from under,
- 28:34and it was a completed pass with only for one yard.
- 28:37So it's third and nine at the 22-yard line of the New York Jets.
- 28:40Barcom flanks wide out to the left side, split wide out to the right side as Eddie Bell,
- 28:45eye formation in the backfield, Adam Lee in front of Boozer.
- 28:48Namath, number 12, looking over the defense, now he's under the center,
- 28:51his head swinging right to left as he calls the signal.
- 28:55Regular throw set for the Jets, Namath takes it up six back to pass on third down,
- 28:59sets up now, throws deep down the middle for Eddie Bell, and it's incomplete.
- 29:02Pass is thrown too wide, again that footing is set to the south.
- 29:06The players are beginning to slip the slide all over the field.
- 29:09Bob James was covering Eddie Bell on the play, and the pass is well overthrown.
- 29:14I have the feeling that perhaps Joe was putting it out of reach of anybody.
- 29:17Well, it was a bump and run situation with Bob James, number 20 on Eddie Bell, number seven.
- 29:21He's not the strongest guy physically, but he was trying to get on down the field,
- 29:25and Joe thought he was a little deeper than he really was,
- 29:27so he threw the ball and went over everybody's head.
- 29:29So now the Jets are in a fun situation, Julian Fagan back there to do it.
- 29:33Fagan is standing back on his own eight yard line, twin safeties, one in front of the other,
- 29:37Walker in front of Kehoe, here's the punt now by...
- 29:42and it's high, and coming down to the 43 yard line taken by Walker.
- 29:45Walker goes up the middle and is down at the midfield line.
- 29:49He just forced forward into the Jet territory at the 49 yard line,
- 29:53just on the edge of the outer portion of the skin part of the infield, and our time has come.
- 29:58The score, the Buffalo Bills, seven, the New York Jets, nothing.
- 30:02Let's take a 60 second jet break before this announcement.

- 30:59At an eight screen burst at 620 Columbia Train Park.
- 31:03Bravy 14.
- 31:05It's first and 10 at the 49-yard line, O.J. Simpson in the wing T.
- 31:13He's a deep back in the I.
- 31:15Signals are being called by Ferguson.
- 31:17The handoff goes to O.J., goes off left tackle, slides forward, keeps driving.
- 31:20He's got it! He's got six yards!
- 31:22He's got six yards and I believe he's set a new record.
- 31:28Maybe a penalty marker on that last play. Let's wait and see.
- 31:31The announcement over the public address system and on the huge scoreboard is that O.J. Simpson has just broken a record.
- 31:38He's being pounded on the back by his teammates.
- 31:42And they're going to present O.J. with that football.
- 31:45O.J. Simpson just went for six yards.
- 31:49And O.J. runs over to the near side and the whole squad gathers around him and pounds him on the back.
- 31:56One of the most popular men to play the game.
- 31:59With his teammates and with the opposition.
- 32:02Time has been called here by the officials by acclamation actually.
- 32:07And O.J. Simpson is at the near sideline surrounded by the squad.
- 32:11And now he goes running back on the field.
- 32:13Number 32, wearing the same number that Jimmy Brown wore when he played for the Cleveland Browns.
- 32:18And O.J. Simpson has just gone over Jimmy Brown's record.
- 32:22Not only players on the sideline gave him a standing ovation and a big handshake and all,
- 32:27but the whole band here, Jay Sadie did.
- 32:29I think that speaks well of the fans in New York City itself, Marty.
- 32:33It certainly does.
- 32:35Ball is at the 43 yard line.
- 32:37He picked up six a second and four at the 43.
- 32:39Back to the ball game.
- 32:40Chamberlain goes to the right side and he goes to O.J.
- 32:42He drives up the middle of the fashion floor to the fourth fumble.
- 32:45O.J. fumbles the ball.
- 32:46The Jets recover.
- 32:47O.J. fumbles the ball.
- 32:49And the Jets have recovered the football on the 41 yard line.
- 32:52O.J. made the recovery down at the bottom of the pile.
- 32:57And it looks like it's Dick Neal, number 81, who made the recovery of that football.
- 33:02Kind of ironic, it departed at F.B. Gaines the yardage.
- 33:05The very next play as he drives in the line with the football, he fumbles and the Jets recover.
- 33:11The ghost of Jimmy Brown.
- 33:13Is that exactly the way it happened?
- 33:15Perhaps.
- 33:16O.J. is not from Syracuse either.
- 33:19First and 10 at the 41 yard line for the Jets.
- 33:22The score is 7-9.
- 33:23The Buffalo Bills are leading in the football game.
- 33:25A pro step for the yard.
- 33:27Eddie Bell flanked wide to the right side.
- 33:29Split wide left to Sparke.
- 33:30Namath takes a snap to sack the pass on first down.
- 33:32Now starts the scramble.
- 33:33Throws over to the right side.
- 33:34And it's crossed by Emerson Boulding.
- 33:35He drives upfield.
- 33:36Goes down to the 47, 48 yard line of the Buffalo Bills.
- 33:40He's got the first down.
- 33:41Jim Chyonsky, the middle linebacker.
- 33:43And John Scorop, hand over 55, the left linebacker.
- 33:45Combined to stop him there.
- 33:47But it was good for the first down.
- 33:49O.J. at the sideline.
- 33:52Off the bench, has started to run out there.
- 33:54So he wanted to make the tackle.
- 33:56He's fired up about this ballgame.
- 33:59A first down for the New York Jets.
- 34:01They trail in the ballgame by a score of 7-0.
- 34:04The ball is at the 48 yard line of the Buffalo Bills.
- 34:07First time the Jets are in Buffalo territory.
- 34:09Three minutes and 15 seconds remain in this first quarter.
- 34:12Namath back to pass again on first down.
- 34:14Set up.
- 34:15Throws long.
- 34:16Way down.
- 34:17And it's caught by Barkham.
- 34:18He goes into a touchdown.
- 34:20A touchdown.
- 34:21D. Barkham caught that high, powering pass.
- 34:29Way down the left sideline.
- 34:31At the 10 yard line.
- 34:33He outran Dwight Harrison on the play.
- 34:36A perfect pitch and catch by Joe Namath.
- 34:40D. Barkham.
- 34:41And it's a 7-6 game.
- 34:42Marty, you hear a lot of talk about momentum.
- 34:45And of course the Buffalo Bills came out here this afternoon,
- 34:48took the football and shoved it right at the Jets.
- 34:50O.J. got it yardage.
- 34:51And now maybe it looks like the momentum turned after O.J. got it yardage.
- 34:55He fumbled on the play.
- 34:56And Joe in two plays put an end zone.
- 34:58You know, this could be a fine afternoon to watch football games in the snow at J. Stadium.
- 35:03A 48 yard pass play is the point after 10th.
- 35:05Fagan is holding for Bobby Howfield.
- 35:07Signals are being called.
- 35:09Number 10, Fagan down on one knee.
- 35:11Howfield number three waiting.
- 35:13Sockerspout taking the ball to snap, plays down and kicked and it's through there.
- 35:16There's a timeout on the field on the score of the New York Jets 7.
- 35:19The Buffalo Bills 7.

- 36:26W-A-B-Y.
- 36:29This is Marty Glickman with Larry Granton speaking to you from Snow Sweat Shade Stadium.
- 36:35The snow is falling not too heavily, almost a pleasant snowfall, if you can call it that.
- 36:41Adjusting of snow on the field, there are three minutes and eight seconds remaining in this first quarter.
- 36:45The ballgame is tied at seven.
- 36:47Here's Bobby Howfield kicking off now for the Jets towards the closed end of the field.
- 36:50Over to the far side, taken by Wallace Francis at the ten yard line.
- 36:53He runs up along the right side to the twenty along the far side line, near the thirty yard line,
- 36:56and they wrestle him down at around the thirty yard line.
- 37:00Three of the New York Jets involved on the tackle as Wallace Francis ran it back from the ten to the thirty yard line.
- 37:08Rob Spicer, fine rookie from Indiana, the first man to reach it.
- 37:13Here's some scores from different parts of the country now.
- 37:15Philadelphia playing at Washington in the first period, the Eagles lead the Redskins 3-0.
- 37:21At the Yale Bowl, Minnesota seven, the New York Giants nothing.
- 37:24We'll have those additional scores during the course of the day.
- 37:27It's first and ten now at the thirty yard line of the Buffalo Bills.
- 37:31Signals being called by Joe Ferguson, the rookie quarterback, number twelve.
- 37:35High formation on the backfield with a flanker wide to the right side.
- 37:38A hand up, no, Ferguson goes back to pass, the first pass of the ballgame.
- 37:41He throws out to the right flat and it's incomplete.
- 37:44His arm was grabbed as he tried to throw the ball.
- 37:47Ferguson was coming out of the far side as John Elliott came smashing in and sort of half held Joe Ferguson's arm
- 37:55as he threw it out to the right flat.
- 37:57Ball seemed all the tight end at the right side was the intended receiver.
- 38:01Now, of course, we may have more emotion as we talk about emotion here in the afternoon.
- 38:05O.J. Simpson's team had emotions early in the game.
- 38:08He needed the yardage, he got it, we view banks retiring this afternoon to get.
- 38:11They have a lot of emotion about this ballgame.
- 38:13So it just looks like a heck of an afternoon for football.
- 38:16So it does, Larry, a second and ten at the thirty yard line.
- 38:20Now the Bills going to a split backfield with a flanker to the right side.
- 38:23Braxton and Simpson are side by side.
- 38:26The hand goes to Braxton at the top of the middle.
- 38:28He goes for a fourth yard and he's dropped, dropped at about the thirty-four yard line.
- 38:32Going off his own left side that time.
- 38:35Good tackle made by Ralph Baker who hit him first and early.
- 38:37Thomas came on, number forty-five to help out on the play.
- 38:40The ball plays down at the thirty-three yard line.
- 38:42So it's third and seven at the thirty-three.
- 38:44And now that Jets forward line on defense is beginning to beat the Buffalo line to the charge.
- 38:51At the snap of the ball, they seem to be penetrating into that Buffalo Bills backfield
- 38:55where on that first Buffalo drive, which went seventy-one yards,
- 38:58the Bills offensive linemen were beating them to the charge.
- 39:03It's third and seven at the thirty-three.
- 39:06A spread formation, a slump right and a split left end.
- 39:10Singles being called on third and seven by Joe Ferguson.
- 39:13He's dropped straight back to pass, heads up now.
- 39:15Throws down the middle, high in the air, and it's deflected almost in the center by early Thomas.
- 39:19It was intended for J.D. Hill, was failing over his head.
- 39:23That ball can be tough to handle right now.
- 39:25John Little put a big rush on Joe Ferguson.
- 39:28Ferguson threw an early foul and was leaping high, had his fingertips on it, and couldn't quite hold on.
- 39:33So now that it's fourth and seven at the thirty-three of the Buffalo Bills,
- 39:37the Bills are in punt formation and twin safeties go back for the New York Jets.
- 39:41Spike Jones, number eleven, drops back into punt formation, back on his own nineteen yard line.
- 39:46Twin safeties for the New York Jets, one in front of the other at the twenty-five and thirty-five yard lines.
- 39:52Here's Jones moving forward to kick that ball.
- 39:54It's a pretty spiral.
- 39:56Rocky Turner takes it at the twenty-eight yard line, starts to his right, and then he's hit at the twenty-nine yard line.
- 40:02And the Jets will take over first and ten at their twenty-nine.
- 40:05Rocky Turner, number twenty-nine, running it back for only one yard.
- 40:09Bill Croyle, a linebacker, was the first man to hit him.
- 40:12So it's first and ten now for the New York Jets.
- 40:15The Jets have stopped the Buffalo Bills.
- 40:17The second time the Bills have had the ball.
- 40:19Actually, the third time, because the second time, O.J. Simpson has to pick him up the six yards necessary
- 40:24to set a new NFL record for one season's play.
- 40:27On his first carry after that, he fumbled the ball, and the Jets went for the trying touchdown.
- 40:32Now it's first and ten at the twenty-nine yard line of the Jets.
- 40:35The handoff goes down to Zabuza on the top of the middle, goes for three yards before he stops.
- 40:39Up to the twenty-two yard line, stopped by Jim Chayaski and John Skoropan, linebackers for the Buffalo Bills.
- 40:44It'll be second and seven after thirty-two, Larry.
- 40:46Larry, I think you called it exactly right.
- 40:48The Jets' defensive line now has beaten the Buffalo offensive line, the first.
- 40:51Now the Jets' offensive line seems like they're moving out a little bit, trying to move that Buffalo Bill line around.
- 40:56Joe, is that success flowing early in the game?
- 40:58To bark him there deep a while ago, I think he'll go back to it a little later.
- 41:01Second and seven after thirty-two, a pro set.
- 41:04Adam Lee and Boozer, all the running backs, name it, back to pass.
- 41:07Goes over the middle.
- 41:08It's complete to Parkham after forty-five.
- 41:10He's down to the beginning of the forty-five.
- 41:11It's good for thirteen yards out of first down.
- 41:14Tony Green, pre-safety, made the tackle, along with Dwight Harrison, number twenty-eight.
- 41:18And that's through the forty-five yard line of the New York Jets.
- 41:21And boy, Parkham can be causing that secondary all kinds of trouble.
- 41:26First of that long deep pass and now cutting in over the middle.
- 41:29Well, that was just a man-to-man coverage, Marty.
- 41:31As you said a while ago, a few moments ago, they're putting a stretcher down there on the field.
- 41:35So therefore they have to try to lay off.
- 41:37If you don't, they can resolve it, that sounds.
- 41:38So they're trying to play them off a little bit, but Parkham can come underneath and catch his plan, too.
- 41:43Here's Namath, back to pass again.
- 41:45Looks to throw over the middle and it's incomplete.
- 41:47It's got us to Parkham once more.
- 41:48That tackle was knocked down by Tony Green.
- 41:50Parkham was not his primary receiver.
- 41:52Namath was knocked down on the play.
- 41:54Parkham was not the primary receiver, as we said.
- 41:57We can see Joe Namath looked right, then quickly left out to the left flat.
- 42:01And then he threw down the middle to Parkham.
- 42:03Well, Joe really, as you said, Marty, came back to his second or third receiver.
- 42:07He was looking out here and looked like the rich cast of the tight end.
- 42:10And then he looked in to Eddie Bell and finding both those guys covered, he just tried to go back to opposite sides of Parkham.
- 42:16That's one of his great abilities.
- 42:17Second and ten at the 45.
- 42:18The handoff down goes to Emerson Buza.
- 42:20A tackle to the middle, he drives for nine yards.
- 42:22A pretty run.
- 42:23Pass the midfield line down to the 46-yard line of the Buffalo Fills where Ernie Kellerman, number 24, the strong safety.
- 42:29And Dick Lewis, the linebacker combined, to stop him.
- 42:32A quick smash up the middle and Emerson Buza really broke it right inside of Bob Wood's offensive left tackle.
- 42:40Short guard situation is third and one.
- 42:43The ball is at the place down at the 47-yard line.
- 42:47Just a couple of seconds to go here in this first quarter.
- 42:49The gun should sound momentarily.
- 42:51And there it is before the next play can be run off.
- 42:54That's the end of the first quarter on the score of the Jets 7, the Bill 7.
- 42:58This is Marty Glickman with Larry Grantham speaking to you from Shea Stadium.
- 43:08The snow is falling a bit more heavily now than it did at the start of the ballgame.
- 43:12It started a couple of hours before game time today.
- 43:15And now the yard marks are being pretty well obscured on the grass portion of Shea Stadium.
- 43:23The infield still is pretty easy to see, the white against the brown of the infield, the skin portion.
- 43:30But as the snow continues, it'll be all white before the end of the afternoon.
- 43:34It's third and two at the 47-yard line of the Buffalo Bills.
- 43:37A tight winged tee for the New York Jets.
- 43:39Signals are being called by Joan Namath.
- 43:41Third and two situation.
- 43:43He hands it up to Buza, drives it to the middle and goes for short guardage.
- 43:46He may not have made it.
- 43:47He may not have made it, but it looks as though there's a penalty marker down offside of being called.
- 43:51They have not indicated which team was offside.
- 43:54Just hands on hips by the headlinesman at the far side.
- 43:57And the Jets apparently were not offside.
- 44:00It's against the Buffalo Bills.
- 44:01Well, you can see the discursion of the Buffalo Bills.
- 44:03They came in and it's linemen's part.
- 44:06They evidently lined up offside.
- 44:08Marty, I didn't really see that much movement there in the line.
- 44:11But a moment ago we were talking about the throwing, and the Buffalo did come out throwing on a third series.
- 44:16But they had the wind behind their back.
- 44:17Now I believe Joe has the wind.
- 44:18If any, even though the flags are swirling as normal here in J Stadium, it seems like the ball is tearing better to the opening end maybe.
- 44:25So now Joe may be throwing with the wind a little bit.
- 44:28It's first and 10 at the 42-yard line, and the Jets shift into a regular throw set.
- 44:32They're running back to Adam Lee and Buza and back to pass his name.
- 44:35A setting up now.
- 44:36Looking to throw.
- 44:37Throw it deep down to the right.
- 44:38Deflected high in the air and incomplete.
- 44:40It was deflected through and over the hands of Eddie Bell.
- 44:43He was covered on the play by Robert James, and the ball was through both their hands rather high, and a hard pass thrown by Namath.
- 44:52Again, he looked for a secondary or tertiary receiver because the primary man was not open.
- 44:58And it looked like there that the Bills were trying to get additional pressure on Joe by rushing one of their linebackers.
- 45:03On that particular occasion, it was Scorsese, the left linebacker, who rushed Joe Namath.
- 45:06And he did get a little additional pressure.
- 45:08Joe had to throw the ball before he was quite ready.
- 45:09Eddie Bell was coming open a little late, but he, as you say, threw the ball a little high.
- 45:13It's second and 10 at the 42-yard line.
- 45:15Off the ball for Bills.
- 45:16The score is tied at seven.
- 45:18The opening minutes of this second quarter here at Chase Stadium.
- 45:21No swirling down.
- 45:22Namath going back to pass.
- 45:24Looks downfield.
- 45:25Throw it deep down to the left side.
- 45:26And it's incomplete.
- 45:27Too high intended for G. Falkham.
- 45:29And hit down hard on the play for Namath.
- 45:31Harrison was covering.
- 45:33Falkham deep downfield.
- 45:34And Earl Edwards defensive right end.
- 45:36Smash Namath down to the ground.
- 45:38That would have been illegal, because there was a big rush put on that time by the Buffalo Bills defensive line.
- 45:43And as it was up in Buffalo in the first game of the season, Earl Edwards, the defensive right end, number 73,
- 45:49really gave the Jets a lot of problems.
- 45:51On that occasion, it was Woodhull, the quarterback.
- 45:53And they really had problems with Earl Edwards.
- 45:55I think he singlehandedly kept the Jets in the hole all afternoon,
- 45:58either by hitting the quarterback or creating holding penalties.
- 46:01Now it's third and 10.
- 46:02That's the 42 back to pass.
- 46:03Namath setting up throws down the middle.
- 46:05The bulls are incomplete.
- 46:07And Boones had another chance to get to that football,
- 46:09but he was screened on the play by a linebacker going back with him.
- 46:13Dick Lewis.
- 46:14And there's no penalty marker thrown down.
- 46:16I think that Am may have complained on the play, but nothing is forthcoming.
- 46:20And let's see whether they try a field goal from way out here.
- 46:23The ball is at the 42 yard line.
- 46:25It would be a 49 yard field goal.
- 46:27And looking for Bobby Howfield to come out.
- 46:29I still don't see number three.
- 46:31Looks like a pointing situation.
- 46:32I see Junior Fagan finally trying to have number 10.
- 46:35I believe they'll go ahead and putt the football.
- 46:37That wind can be tough.
- 46:39The flag's down on the field, which marks the end line and the goal line.
- 46:43And back of the goal post.
- 46:46Blowing every which way, but they're clearly blowing down on the faces of the New York Jets.
- 46:50So in punt formation is Junior Fagan on the zone 43.
- 46:53Donnie Walker and Bill Cahill in twin safeties.
- 46:55A low pass, but the kick has gotten away.
- 46:57A high twisting spiral coming down at the eight yard line.
- 47:00And taken there by Walker.
- 47:01Walker starts up to his right and he sits down at about the 17 yard line.
- 47:05Good coverage on the play by the New York Jets.
- 47:08Looks like Rick Harrell, the center, was the first guy down there as normal in those punt situations.
- 47:13Seems the center gets down there before anybody else has a chance.
- 47:15Why? I don't know.
- 47:16Well, maybe he's unobstructed.
- 47:18Head up from the line, there's nobody playing the front of the center.
- 47:21That time Harrell was the man who made the tackle, but David Knight playing an end position,
- 47:26number 82, that's fine.
- 47:27Rookie from William & Mary.
- 47:28He was also downfield.
- 47:30But of course that kills the theory that a lot of coaches put in for old football, Marty,
- 47:33and the fact that they put a man head up on the center, they really try to punish the center.
- 47:37And the reason they would punish him would be to create a bad snap from center on the punt itself
- 47:42and maybe acquire a better field position that way.
- 47:45As a timeout on the field right now, while we have the opportunity,
- 47:48we can sort of recap O.J. Simpson's record-breaking streak today.
- 47:54On the first drive of the Buffalo Bills, they went 71 yards for the touchdown.
- 47:58And on that series of plays, he carried the ball for, as I recall now, 57 yards.
- 48:04That's right, 57 yards.
- 48:05He needed 61 going into the ball game, so he was 4 yards shy.
- 48:09The next time that the Bills had the ball on his first carry, he carried for 6 yards,
- 48:14and thus he broke Jimmy Brown's record.
- 48:17As of this moment, he has 1,865 yards, our unofficial total.
- 48:22It is official that he did break the record, but the specific number of yards is not quite certain,
- 48:26but it's about 1,865 anyhow.
- 48:28Now play is about to be resumed.
- 48:29First and center, the 17-yard line.
- 48:31Chandler goes emotional to the left side.
- 48:32High formation on the backfield.
- 48:34The head of Joseph Braxton drives up the middle
- 48:36and drives up to the 20-yard line where he's held upright by the New York Jets defense.
- 48:40Dick Neal, John Little, Ralph Baker, John Ebersole, all in on the play.
- 48:44A 3-yard gain makes it 2nd and 7 at the 20-yard line.
- 48:47In addition, O.J. has also broken the record for carries during the course of the season.
- 48:51O.J. carried the ball for 307 attempts.
- 48:54Jimmy Brown's old record was 306 in a single season.
- 48:57And of course, he will add to that total this afternoon, you know, Marty.
- 49:00And not that wasn't too good, but if you multiply 4 times 61 yards,
- 49:04he got the first quarter because it is four quarters in this afternoon.
- 49:08That's a lot of yards during the afternoon's work.
- 49:10Sure is. He can go over 2,000 yards if he runs for 197 yards today.
- 49:14It's 2nd and 7 at the 20-yard line.
- 49:16The hand of Joseph Braxton, again, Braxton trying to drive off right tackle.
- 49:20Pubbles the ball, slow rolling around.
- 49:22And he's rolled out of bounds. Let's see where that...
- 49:25I lost sight of that football.
- 49:27Braxton running off his on-right tackle,
- 49:29picked up about 5 yards on the play from the 20 to the 25-yard line.
- 49:33And it's still Buffalo Bill's ball.
- 49:36Tackle was made by Burgess Owens along with Delis Howell and John Elliott.
- 49:40The ball at the 25-yard line, he picked up 5.
- 49:42It's 3rd and 2 at the 25.
- 49:44And since O.J. fumbled the ball, he's not carried to my recollection since that time.
- 49:50Well, maybe Coach Raymond has had a little thought with his quarterback
- 49:53and feeling that such an emotional outburst at the first part of the game.
- 49:56Maybe O.J. needs to settle down a little bit,
- 49:58get his emotions more under control,
- 50:00and care the football a little later on in the action this afternoon.
- 50:03Well, it's 3rd and 2 at the 25.
- 50:05Short yardage situation.
- 50:07It's a tight-winged team and an emotional stander coming across back of the line of scrimmage.
- 50:12Runs along the line now, the hand of Joseph O.J. is running off left tackle,
- 50:15cuts up field, drives out in the open,
- 50:17takes a 5-7-9 yard before he finally stops.
- 50:21Beautiful run by O.J. Simpson.
- 50:23He keeps getting hit as he's carrying that ball,
- 50:26but he maintains his feet, keeps his balance,
- 50:29and keeps spinning and driving and darting,
- 50:31and picks up substantial yardage.
- 50:33He needed 2 for the first round. He picked up 9.
- 50:35The ball is up to the 36-yard line.
- 50:37Not only that, Marty, he's also strong also.
- 50:39Even when you get your hands on him and do hold on to him,
- 50:42he's tough to bring down.
- 50:43So he drives for additional yardage that way, too.
- 50:45That time he took 3 or 4 men to finally stop his fall at Fargrid.
- 50:48So he has a lot of ability.
- 50:50He can come out of the backfield, catch the ball, he blocks, he runs the ball, he does everything.
- 50:54He does it all.
- 50:55His first from 10 at the 36-yard line of the Buffalo Bills.
- 50:57The ball game is tied at 7.
- 50:59Three minutes are gone in this second quarter.
- 51:01And hit back of the line of scrimmage is O.J. Simpson by Ralph Baker.
- 51:05It looked like a quick draw that time, but O.J., coming to take the handoff, was hit
- 51:10as soon as he got the handoff from quarterback Ferguson by Ralph Baker.
- 51:13And Baker may have been blitzing.
- 51:15Was he, Larry?
- 51:16He was blitzing at the point I wanted to make, Marty, that Ralph was blitzing on the play.
- 51:20I would like to think that Ralph is quick enough to read those plays and step in there that quickly,
- 51:24but I do think he was blitzing.
- 51:26A lot of speculation.
- 51:27That time O.J. was hit for a loss.
- 51:29So a lot of speculation about the Jets this afternoon was would they blitz a lot to clog up those holes and stop O.J.
- 51:34I don't think they blitzed much because if he breaks one on the blitz,
- 51:37they don't have that many people to chase him down.
- 51:39Second and 12 out to 34 yard line again, Chandler runs back of his lineman in motion.
- 51:43The handoff goes to Braxton.
- 51:44The power sweeps to the left side, hits back of the line of scrimmage.
- 51:46He drives up to the line of scrimmage and that's all.
- 51:48Nice play by Dick Neal.
- 51:50Dick Neal and John Elliott combining to stop that run by Braxton.
- 51:54This is Jim Braxton, who did not play in that first game, the third game of the season up in Buffalo.
- 51:59Larry Watkins was the pullback in that ball game for O.J. Simpson.
- 52:02Braxton is much bigger in terms of weight.
- 52:05He's 6'1 and 243 pounds.
- 52:07Watkins is 6'2 and 2'30.
- 52:10So it's going to be third and 12 out to 34 yard line.
- 52:14No loss on the last play and no gain.
- 52:16Well now, in these particular situations, the Buffalo Bears are going in there with a wide receiver
- 52:20and taking out Paul Seymour, the fine tight end, the rookie tight end from Notre Dame.
- 52:23And now they've got three wide receivers in the game.
- 52:25Well, the Jets are going to have to come up with some defense to stop this.
- 52:28Third and 12 out to 34. Wallace Francis is the third wide receiver.
- 52:31He's in the slot to the right side.
- 52:33The handoff goes to O.J. Simpson.
- 52:34He's hitting at the line of skimmers, puts through and goes for three yards before he stops.
- 52:38Out to 37 yard line. He picks up three yards and that's all.
- 52:41They try to cross up that Jets defense.
- 52:43I think he calls it automatic.
- 52:45Well, I don't know how he calls it automatic or not, but they spread those receivers out there on the field.
- 52:49Two to one side, two wide receivers to one side, one to the other.
- 52:52But the Jets, to combat that, came up there with that baby blitz.
- 52:55Field wise, really came there rushing, going right to the fans.
- 52:58They had a better fan, but they clogged up a lot of holes and a lot of pursuits to tag along J. Simpson.
- 53:04Ball game is tied at seven. There are 10 minutes and 43 seconds remaining in this first half.
- 53:10Spike Jones drops back to his own 22 yard line, ready for the snap to center.
- 53:15David Knight and Rocky Tower in twin safeties, one in front of the other.
- 53:19And there's the kick, an end over end kick and fairly short.
- 53:21David Knight talks for a fair catch and he makes the fair catch at the 32 yard line of the New York Jets.
- 53:26So the Jets have decent field position, first and 10 on their 32.
- 53:30The ball game is tied at seven.
- 53:33There's a timeline on the field to score. The New York Jets, seven, the Buffalo Bills, seven.
- 53:39Pepperality. Price is incremented to 74.

- 54:48home?
- 54:51Where's your toy?
- 55:02Where's yourhta part 걱정 plosi do?
- 55:04We are nearly 85 now but we are talking years from now about this over 505.
- 55:10We are established.
- 55:12800 yard mark figure right now. His second and five at the 37 yard line of the New York Jets the ballgame is tied at seven.
- 55:18A regular pro set, flanker on the left side, split right end. Namath takes it, heads up to Boozer again, runs up
- 55:23as the outside is on the left end, moves upfield, drives up for a first down and more, and he's not got a bounce right near the midfield line.
- 55:30At the 48 yard line of the New York Jets. It's just another first down.
- 55:33He picked up 11 yards, Emerson Boozer did that time. Ernie Kellerman and Dwight Harrison combined to knock him out of bounds at the New York Jets 48.
- 55:41It's first and 10 at the 48 and boy that Emerson Boozer looks better and better every Sunday out.
- 55:46And also we've said it a few times over the course of the year, Joe Namath looks even better.
- 55:50You know the Buffalo Bills look like they're trying to stop the fast attack of Joe Namath, therefore he's flipping the ball inside Emerson Boozer.
- 55:56And they're catching that line rushing to pass there, kind of off balance and by surprise Emerson Boozer is able to flip through there and get in the secondary
- 56:03and pick up that yardage. So Joe is calling a beautiful game so far.
- 56:07It's first and 10 on the 48. Namath falls down handing off to Emerson Boozer.
- 56:11He had a reach out and hand off the ball to him and Boozer goes to the line of skippers and that's all.
- 56:15The footing is slippery on the skin portion of the infield and they're playing out around second base now on the skin portion of the infield as of this moment.
- 56:23The snow continues to fall fairly heavily now and the off-stripes where play has not taken place near the open end of the stadium around the 15 yard line in,
- 56:33the off-stripes are very difficult to see but on the skin portion of the infield it's getting sloppy now, kind of slippery and wet.
- 56:40It's second and 10 at the 48 yard line. Namath was back to pass in the slump.
- 56:43That's up now. Now he throws deep way downfield and it is deflected and incomplete.
- 56:48And send a deep downfield to Rich Caster and it was knocked down at the last moment by Ernie Kellerman and Tony Green.
- 56:54Whitehouse and also covering on the play. So it'll be third and 10 at the 48 yard line of the New York Jets.
- 57:00And as the ball game rocks along Marty you know it's just a matter of time before Joe Namath going to his big tight end Rich Caster.
- 57:06If you recall the game in Buffalo earlier this season Woodall went to Caster early in the game.
- 57:10It looked like a sure touchdown pass. Caster dropped the football. I think that was a turnaround point in the ball game.
- 57:15But Joe fortunately has forgotten that and he's going to go back to Caster. Caster's too big of a target to let go to waste out there this afternoon.
- 57:23Hank Bjorgman has committed the backfield now replacing Emerson Brewster for this play of third and 10 on the Jets 48 yard line. The ball game is tied at 7.
- 57:31We'll have more scores for you in just a moment. Now the Jets shift to know a pro set. Namath calling signals.
- 57:37Takes the snap. He goes back to pass. Sets up now. Throws the screen out to Willis-Brock complete to Attaway.
- 57:42Attaway can't cut inside the man who makes the tackle. And about the line of scrimmage the 48 yard line so there's no game on the play.
- 57:48John Scorapan made the stop. Here are those scores we talked about. This is the day of decision for five of the eight teams to make the playoff.
- 57:57Atlanta is leading the Wall-Eens in the second quarter. Atlanta 14, New Orleans nothing. In the second period Philadelphia 10, the Washington Redskins 7.
- 58:06And in the second period the Minnesota Vikings 7, the New York Giants nothing.
- 58:10It's fourth and 10 at the 48 yard line. Julian Fagan back on his own 34 yard line ready to get the snap in center. Donnie Walker and Bill Cahill are in twin safeties.
- 58:19Walker the deep man. Here's the punt. A high end over end kick coming down at the 20 yard line.
- 58:25Taken there by Cahill. Cahill drives up along the right side. He loses two men and he's driven out of bounds finally.
- 58:30Not got a bounce on the play by Clif McClain number 42 of the New York Jets.
- 58:34The ball is at the 29 yard line of the Buffalo Bills.
- 58:40Well that sign is taken and the score the Jets 7, the Buffalo Bills 7 will take a 60 second jet break for this announcement.
- 58:48Pepperality. Price is intended for 74. Head Pepper is neither late themselves Pepperality.
- 58:54If it's 74 you've got time for you. Don't knock yourself out running around.
- 58:59Pepperality means low 74 Pepper price. High Pepper trade in plus low Pepper down payment.
- 59:05Pepperality we can tell you we can show you. But until you buy you can't try Pepperality.
- 59:11Head to the home of Pepperality.
- 59:13Head to the home of Pepperality.

- 59:42We're going to break the day at the Santa Maria.
- 59:49This is Marty Glickman with Larry Cranston at Shea Stadium.
- 59:52The Bills have the ball first and 10 on their 29 yard line. The game is tied at 7.
- 59:578 minutes remain in the first half. Chandler goes in motion on the left side peeling off to his left.
- 1:00:01The handoff goes to Braxton. The big fullback drives up the middle goes to about 2 yards and he stops at the 31 yard line.
- 1:00:06Ralph Baker holds him upright and the legs of Braxton kept digging and digging and Baker kept digging with him.
- 1:00:13The two men nose to nose upright just sort of kept each other in place, running in place.
- 1:00:18Looked like two big bulls there Marty Baker, 2 28 63 and Braxton 2 what, 2 43 61.
- 1:00:24So they were just nose to nose digging it out. Nobody was going anywhere.
- 1:00:28Well that makes the second and 8 at the 31 yard line on the Buffalo Bills. The score is tied at 7.
- 1:00:335 formation in the backfield. Braxton in front of O.J. Simpson.
- 1:00:36Signals being called. The handoff goes to O.J. trying to flip right around his own left end.
- 1:00:40He sits down and picks up a couple of yards and a full down finally at the pick up 2 yards by Mark Lomas.
- 1:00:46Lomas boxed that play in. O.J. tried to cut up inside and Mark Lomas grabbed it and pulled him down.
- 1:00:52Helped by John Elliott. The ball is placed down at the 33 yard line. A 2 yard gain makes it 3rd and 6.
- 1:00:58That gives O.J. some 80 yards thus far in the first half.
- 1:01:02It looks like the Jets were trying to cooperate with O.J. and let him get his yard as early in the first quarter and get on out of the game.
- 1:01:07They thought maybe he might go slow down there says Marty because they've stopped him so far in the second quarter since he has achieved his record.
- 1:01:14He's 20 yards past the record held formally by Jimmy Brown.
- 1:01:19It's 3rd and 6. That's a 33 yard line. A passing situation. If Joe Ferguson elects to pass at C.
- 1:01:25He takes it. He does dump straight back setting up. Looks downfield. He's got 5 men down.
- 1:01:29And it's caught by Braxton. The big throwback. He drives to the first down and ball gets inside the 50 yard line of the Jets and right down to about the 47.
- 1:01:37Ralph Baker finally makes the tackle. 5 men were sent downfield that time. The 2 running backs and the 3 pens.
- 1:01:44That is the 2 wide receivers down the tight end. Nobody left in there.
- 1:01:48And he threw to one of the men downfield. The big throwback Jim Braxton for the first down at the Jets 47 yard line.
- 1:01:54He hits the ball on the move a little bit and when you send 5 men out in the pattern that creates 4 men rushing against the 5 offensive line of the Buffalo Fields.
- 1:02:01The Buffalo Fields offensive line has noticed they're blocking for O.J. in the running plays and not so much pass protection for the quarterback.
- 1:02:07Well that person can at the 47 of the New York Jets.
- 1:02:10It was being called by Ferguson. Eye formation on the backfield.
- 1:02:14Handoff goes to O.J. Simpson. Simpson on his cast drives up the middle. Goes to 3 yards. He's down to about the 44 yard line.
- 1:02:20Ralph Baker again makes the tackle for the Jets. Ball placed down at the 43 yard line. It is a 4 yard game.
- 1:02:27Makes it 2nd and 6th at the 43 of the Jets. The ball game is tied at 7.
- 1:02:32With 5 and a half minutes remaining in the first half and the snow continues to swirl here in Shea Stadium.
- 1:02:38No definite wind direction here in the stadium itself although at the top of the stadium the wind is blowing from left to right.
- 1:02:452nd and 6th at the 43 yard line. A north wind I believe it is.
- 1:02:502nd and 6th at the 43 of the Jets. Ball game is tied at 7. Joe Ferguson, number 12, is calling 6.
- 1:02:55Take them. Hands down to O.J. again. Trying to go off left tackle. He breaks down to the cliff of the north.
- 1:02:59And he's pulled down at the 40 yard line of the New York Jets. He picks up 3 yards more.
- 1:03:05And that was your automatic call at the line of scrimmage. Joe Ferguson, the quarterback, I thought did a great job calling because the New York Jets are what we call an odd man line.
- 1:03:14He's a strong left side linebacker with tech inside his defense man.
- 1:03:18So in these situations it always looks like you can get outside and gain yardage.
- 1:03:22It looks like Joe Ferguson came up there, saw the situation, changed the play, gave it to O.J. going outside and he did pick up some yards.
- 1:03:29Tight short yardage situation as Ted Coy comes into the ball game at hand replacing J.D. Hill.
- 1:03:35It's a wing-C to the left side, eye formation on the backfield, 3rd and 2 on the Jets, 39.
- 1:03:40He's going to play on the ball game with the score tied at 7 here on the first half.
- 1:03:44Figgins are being called. Ferguson takes it.
- 1:03:47And just as O.J. O.J. tries to go for the yards, he's drive forward and I think he just about makes it.
- 1:03:51He goes for 2, 2 and a half yards. He was given back but I think his forward progress dropped inside the 37 yard line.
- 1:03:58And let's wait and see. Hill-wise, ball moments.
- 1:04:01He's smashing in to stop the player and we'll wait and see whether or not he has the first down.
- 1:04:07The ball is placed down. They're going to measure on this one. It's going to be very, very close.
- 1:04:11Yarn sticks will be brought out and it's going to be mighty close.
- 1:04:16We watch the official and it is shy by about 4 inches.
- 1:04:21So it's 4 fan inches and let's see whether they go for it.
- 1:04:26No field goal kicker, John Leopold is not going out on the field.
- 1:04:30We won't know for how many. They're going to call time. That's right, they call time.
- 1:04:34They call time on the field. It's a time out on the field to score. The Jets 7, the Bills 7.
- 1:04:39How many of you men listening have a dead fragrance closet?
- 1:04:42That's the closet where all the unfinished aftershave and colognes you've been given keep piling up.
- 1:04:47They just were not right for you.
- 1:04:49English leather on the other hand stays out of a dead fragrance closet.
- 1:04:53English leather is clean, honest scent suits men who lead an active lifestyle.
- 1:04:57So they use English leather day and night until it's all gone and they're ready for some more.
- 1:05:03So come on men, avoid that dead fragrance closet.
- 1:05:06Give her some heavy hints that you wear English leather or nothing at all.

- 1:05:38Prices are available at the Philharmonic Hall box office. Thank you.
- 1:05:42Have an evening in ABY.
- 1:05:45Here's the big play coming up right now.
- 1:05:54It's 4 and about 4 inches for the Buffalo Bills as the New York Jets 42 and a half yard line.
- 1:06:01They line up in a flackety formation.
- 1:06:04Campbell is on the flank, high formation in the backfield, Braxton in front of OJ and they go side by side.
- 1:06:09The Jets defense is back in solidly.
- 1:06:12Ferguson calling signals. They just need it. Just Ferguson in the quarterback keep and he probably made it.
- 1:06:17He dove in on the quarterback keep and let's see where they place that forward progress of the ball.
- 1:06:21That's what counts. It looks as though he made it.
- 1:06:24Dick Neal, John Little, Mark Lomas, John Elliott all in on the play.
- 1:06:27And it looks as though he's got the first down.
- 1:06:30Ball is at the 42 yard line. Yes, there's the single now, first down.
- 1:06:34There was never any question there Marty once he dove across that line.
- 1:06:37Those referees have those quarterbacks out quite conservatively on plays like that.
- 1:06:40And all they've got to do is get to know that it's them or the football up in there and over the line.
- 1:06:45And they usually make the first down in that situation.
- 1:06:48What does a linebacker do in a situation like that? Do they prepare for that by meeting them high, going in high?
- 1:06:52I'll tell you sir about that sometime when we've got a little more time.
- 1:06:55I had that same situation out in Oakland a year ago and I didn't perform too well because the tight end which I had to cover caught a touchdown pass.
- 1:07:01Oh is that so? Let's not forget about it Larry.
- 1:07:04First and center of the 42 yard line, the head of the OJ system, he drives it inside his own right guard, coming back inside, drives over the 42 about the 39 yard line.
- 1:07:12He was hit back at the line of scrimmage but he pulled away and Ralph Baker finally pulled him down.
- 1:07:17Ralph Baker and John Elliott in on the tackle.
- 1:07:20It'll be second and seven at the 39 yard line.
- 1:07:23We make out OJ to now have something like 86 and three, 89 yards.
- 1:07:30Just far in the first half alone and he's caught the broken Jimmy Brown's record already.
- 1:07:35The most yards gained in a single season by a national football league player in the entire history of the NFL.
- 1:07:41It's second and seven at the 39 of the New York Jets. The ball game is tied at seven.
- 1:07:45Ferguson called single, straight back to fast setting up now plenty of time, throws out to the right and is caught waiting for it at J.D. Hill and he's,
- 1:07:52and he's, and he's knocked out of bounds at the 21 yard line. Bob Shantz, number 81, went deep down along the sideline and suddenly buttoned up.
- 1:08:01And as he turned there was a ball, perfectly executed fast play.
- 1:08:05Dennis Howell and Virgil Zellwein combined did not come out of bounds at the 21, a gain of 18 yards and a first and 10.
- 1:08:12Ball to Buffalo Bill, half of New York Jets, 21 yard line.
- 1:08:15And while we're throwing bouquets of roses around about the play call and you got to give Ferguson credit on that one. I think the Jets thought he was going to run the football.
- 1:08:22They were factoring in pretty tight, didn't get much of a pass for it and he just had adequate time to throw and hit Bob Chandler out there to ride flat for the first down.
- 1:08:30It's first and 10 at the 21 yard line. The handoff goes to Braxton that drives up the middle and goes for five yards before he's shot to the 16 yard line.
- 1:08:36Ferguson makes the tackle at the 16. Jim Braxton, built like a fire flood, busts the street up the middle.
- 1:08:43And now there was two minutes left to go in this first half and time has taken us. Time out on the field to score the Jets 7, the Bills 7.
- 1:08:51Two balls to be in that scotch glass. Present Casey Jones and Elgin Baylor.
- 1:08:56Elgin, you've got class. Like your 71 games, you had class.
- 1:09:01Oh, 71.
- 1:09:02For a guy with one shot, you've got class. Like a two ball four and a glass, you've got class.
- 1:09:10Oh no, Casey, you've got class. You were cool when you picked up my pay.
- 1:09:16For a little guy, you really had class. Like a two ball four and a glass, you've got class.
- 1:09:23Oh no, big man, you've got class. Like a champion 15, you've got class.
- 1:09:31But your team cut us off at the pass. Like a two ball four and a glass, you've got class.
- 1:09:39Two balls is one of the best beers in Europe. Now it's made in America.
- 1:09:43The taste of the old country but light like America. American's right, too. Two balls beer. It's got class.
- 1:09:51With Larry Matham, I'm Artie Clickford speaking to you from Shea Stadium.
- 1:09:56As the snow continues to fall, what else do you expect?
- 1:10:00Ball game aside, it's seven. OJ Simpson has set a new National Football League ground gaming record for a single season.
- 1:10:08The New York Jets are being threatened now by the Buffalo Bills.
- 1:10:11We're second and four at the 17 yard line of the Jets. Second and four.
- 1:10:15The signal's being called by Joe Ferguson.
- 1:10:17Braxton in front of OJ Simpson in the I formation.
- 1:10:20Ferguson takes a pitch out wide to OJ. Brugs off left tackle, cuts inside, and he's down into picking up three yards.
- 1:10:26Good run by OJ Simpson from the 17 down to about the 13, 14 yard line.
- 1:10:31Braxton leading the playoff field. Burgess O was making a good tackle.
- 1:10:34Helped by Bill Ferguson, a fine rookie linebacker from San Diego State.
- 1:10:40I always like to see how these rookie quarterbacks perform under this kind of pressure here late in the first half now.
- 1:10:45He's got to work the clock. He's also got to try to move the football down for the first half.
- 1:10:49And it should be very interesting between here and half time.
- 1:10:52Watch this running shows a minute and 25 seconds to go in this first half.
- 1:10:55They have two timeouts left to them. Third and two at the 13 yard line.
- 1:10:59Man in motion comes to the right side. It's Chandler in motion to the right.
- 1:11:02Handoff goes to OJ running off left tackle. Hits back to the right.
- 1:11:05Breakdown to McClure. Goes to the goal line. Cut down OJ Simpson.
- 1:11:08A beautiful off tackle run by OJ. Jim Brugs leading the way once again.
- 1:11:13OJ tricky, driving hard, side stepping in.
- 1:11:17Pupple-hipping is way down. Went into the goal line, untouched.
- 1:11:21What a run by OJ Simpson. Brilliant.
- 1:11:24Just as I say, it's going to be all the less interesting to see how the quarterback used the clock down here.
- 1:11:28This close the hand time, Marty.
- 1:11:31There was a fine run.
- 1:11:33And let's see now, he's up to the...he's over or very close to 100 yards thus far in the first half alone.
- 1:11:39If he gets 197, it'll go over 2,000 yards in one season.
- 1:11:43And he's up close to the 100 yard mark in the first half.
- 1:11:46The score is now 13 to 7.
- 1:11:48Buffalo Bills leader of the New York Jets, John Leapold, ready to try to point after.
- 1:11:51The ball is rolled back to him, but he gets the kick off and it's through there for the point after.
- 1:11:55So there's a timeout on the field to score.
- 1:11:57The Buffalo Bills 14, the New York Jets 7.

- 1:12:52We are told now that O.J. Simpson has 105 yards in the first half.
- 1:13:0118 carries for 105 yards.
- 1:13:04And he's right on his way to getting the record, Marty.
- 1:13:06But we should, we would like to say we have a very interesting halftime.
- 1:13:09Both the New York Jets, Mr. Phil Isen, is in our booth now.
- 1:13:12We'll be our guests at halftime.
- 1:13:14We'll be talking about Wade Dubank and then possibly Joe Namath's situation, a lot of other things at halftime.
- 1:13:19Here's the handoff, pullback, Harrison Booster goes up the middle for about a half yard on a play.
- 1:13:23And that's all.
- 1:13:24It's Earl Isen that's right in, can splash the end.
- 1:13:26McFarland goes to 57 seconds remaining in this first half.
- 1:13:29The Jets are down by a score of 14 to 7.
- 1:13:32And now the Jets are all forth.
- 1:13:34Now the Buffalo Bill is off the dime.
- 1:13:35They want that ball again.
- 1:13:39Buffalo is called dime.
- 1:13:40Here's a second period score.
- 1:13:42The Washington Redskins who trailed Philadelphia 3-0 and 10-7 now lead the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 1:13:48The score of the Redskins 17, the Eagles 10 in the second period.
- 1:13:52Also in the second period, the Minnesota Vikings 7, the New York Giants nothing.
- 1:13:56In the second period, Atlanta 14, New Orleans nothing.
- 1:14:00We'll pause briefly now for station identification on the Jets' set network.
- 1:14:04WABY, Sports Radio 14 Albany, home of the New York Jets.
- 1:14:13WB14.
- 1:14:20With Larry Grantham, Marty Glick reporting.
- 1:14:22Just 52 seconds remaining now before the end of this first half.
- 1:14:25The Jets are trailing by a score of 14 to 7.
- 1:14:28A regular pro strip, second and 10 at the 24 yard line.
- 1:14:31Namacup straight back to pass.
- 1:14:32Set up now.
- 1:14:33Look down for your postie.
- 1:14:34Way down the middle for Falkham.
- 1:14:35And it's incomplete.
- 1:14:37Knocked down at the last moment by Tony Green.
- 1:14:39Incomplete.
- 1:14:42So it'll be third and 10 at the 24 yard line.
- 1:14:45I hear boos out there.
- 1:14:46I wonder why.
- 1:14:47Well, Joe didn't like the call.
- 1:14:48He needed to keep Falkham.
- 1:14:49He thought he was under fear with by Tony Green down there deep down field.
- 1:14:53But you know, it looked like to me the ball kind of hung up in the air.
- 1:14:55Joe tried to go deep to Falkham.
- 1:14:57It looked like he was open momentarily.
- 1:14:58The ball didn't get there quite on time.
- 1:15:01It looked like he kind of hung and Green recovered to knock the football down.
- 1:15:04That makes a third and 10 for the Jets.
- 1:15:06That's the 24 yard line of the Jets.
- 1:15:0845 seconds remain in this first half as they break the huddle and join the line of Schimachetti-Bell Flanks wide out to the right side.
- 1:15:13Deep walk and splits left.
- 1:15:15They go to a pro set.
- 1:15:16Emerson Puzer and Mike Adam Lear are the running backs, let's name it.
- 1:15:19Take the snap.
- 1:15:20Takes the handoff.
- 1:15:21First back sets up now.
- 1:15:22Booze down the middle.
- 1:15:23Deflected and incomplete.
- 1:15:24It went through the hands of linebacker Dick Lewis.
- 1:15:27And it's incomplete.
- 1:15:30So it'll be fourth and 10 at the 24 yard line.
- 1:15:32And it is possible for the Bills to get within range of a field goal before this first half ends.
- 1:15:36It sure is and that play has almost no sense.
- 1:15:39It would have put them in range.
- 1:15:41Walford Elske thought he had that multiple-ferocity fun covered there.
- 1:15:45He hit Joe Williget as he turned the ball loose.
- 1:15:47But unfortunately Joe had gotten rid of the ball and he didn't pick up the money for the multiple-ferocity kids back in Buffalo.
- 1:15:55Begum jumps back to his own 10 yard line ready to punt for the Jets.
- 1:15:58Walker and Cahill in twin safeties.
- 1:16:00Cahill in front of Walker.
- 1:16:02And to his right.
- 1:16:03They're out in the midfield.
- 1:16:04Here's the punt by Begum.
- 1:16:06A short kick.
- 1:16:07End of the run.
- 1:16:08And it's taken by Cahill.
- 1:16:09Cahill runs out to his left.
- 1:16:10Break down on the clear for the moment.
- 1:16:12Down to the 20 yard line.
- 1:16:13And into the fourth corner.
- 1:16:14Down to the 10 yard line.
- 1:16:15He's going to go in.
- 1:16:16Touchdown!
- 1:16:17Touchdown!
- 1:16:20Bill Cahill getting that very short kick.
- 1:16:23Going up the middle and suddenly swinging wide around the left side.
- 1:16:27And in just those few seconds we were talking about field goal position.
- 1:16:31They came up with sixes and probably sevenes in just an hour.
- 1:16:34A fine run back and a very short punt.
- 1:16:37A run back by Bill Cahill.
- 1:16:39And that short punt for the New York Jets by Julian Sagan.
- 1:16:43And at certain times like that it seems like the players don't want to relax, but they do.
- 1:16:47Marty, it seemed like the ball wasn't kicking deep as they thought it was.
- 1:16:50He came shooting in there.
- 1:16:52They gave him a little room to catch the football.
- 1:16:53And when he got the room to catch the ball, he just took it and made one real good cut and got out on the clear and went all the way.
- 1:16:58So it was a great run. He gambled on catching the ball because it was the jet defenders around him when he caught the football.
- 1:17:04But after he once gambled and caught the ball and took it off and cut to his left, he was out on the clear.
- 1:17:09He sure was when he went around his own left side and cutting into the left corner.
- 1:17:13Now there's a momentary delay while they wind up that football.
- 1:17:18And they want to get it out from where it is muddied.
- 1:17:24And now they're set. Schafer holds for Leopold.
- 1:17:28L-E-Y-P-O-L-D-C. A thick fellow, 6'2", 224 pounds.
- 1:17:32Kicks straight away. Signals are being called down for the point after the ball.
- 1:17:35The staff plays down and kicks it up and through there.
- 1:17:38So there's a timeout on the field to score. The football bill is 21. The New York Jets, 7.

- 1:18:53John Leapold, John Leapold takes the ball right out of the end zone.
- 1:19:22He's got a linebacker going back to cover on the play, John Scarpin,
- 1:19:26and Dwight Harrison backing up as well.
- 1:19:28He was covered, as we say, nautically, fore and aft.
- 1:19:32He sure was, Marty. That ball kind of hung up there again on Joe,
- 1:19:35and it was a long throw, but that's the only chance he's got here prior to halftime to get back on the scoreboard.
- 1:19:40Of course, this is, at all times, this is Joe Namath at his fifth.
- 1:19:43When you're down 21 to 7, I know of no other, no better quarterback in professional football
- 1:19:47to bring your team back and get those points on the scoreboard
- 1:19:50and get you back in the ballgame or get ahead in the ballgame.
- 1:19:53It's second and ten after 20, with 17 seconds to go on the half.
- 1:19:55As the quick opener for Emerson Boos, he drives up the field for some three yards on the play,
- 1:19:59and unless somebody calls time, Watts will run out for the end of his first half.
- 1:20:04Eight seconds to go, and Watts keeps running.
- 1:20:06Nobody has called time.
- 1:20:07Down to the two-second mark, and you'll hear the gun in just a moment.
- 1:20:11There it is. That's the end of the first half.
- 1:20:14The Buffalo Bill is 21, and the New York Jets are 7.

- 1:21:29Stadium, along with Marty Clickman.
- 1:21:30Of course, the snow is coming down quite rapidly at the moment.
- 1:21:34Halftime score is the Buffalo Bill 21, the New York Jets 7.
- 1:21:38Early in the ball game, the New York Jets kicked the football off the Buffalo.
- 1:21:42And on the first series, OJ Southern entered today's game needing some 61 yards
- 1:21:47to capture the all-time rushing record for one year, 1,864 yards by Jimmy Brown.
- 1:21:54On the first opening series this afternoon, he carried the ball seven times for a total of 57 yards,
- 1:22:00and of course, it was climaxed by Braxton's one-yard plunge with 628 yards in the first quarter,
- 1:22:05making a score of seven or nothing.
- 1:22:08Then on the next two series, of course, on the next series, OJ Southern carried the ball,
- 1:22:12picked up his six yards, got the rushing yardage total that he needed for the record,
- 1:22:18and then the following play, the ball was handed off to OJ and he fumbled it.
- 1:22:24Of course, as we had talked about earlier, we believe this had a lot to do with the momentum
- 1:22:28that was generated by OJ Southern and the Buffalo Bills prior to the kickoff.
- 1:22:33After attaining the goal, the record he wanted so badly, he had a little letdown.
- 1:22:38He fumbled the football.
- 1:22:39The Jets took over.
- 1:22:40Two plays later, Joe Namath hit Jerome Barkham 48 yards, and the New York Jets set down.
- 1:22:45So with 3.08 left in the first quarter, the score was the New York Jets 7 to the Buffalo Bills 7.
- 1:22:51And then all the action in the second quarter came about in the last two minutes.
- 1:22:55OJ Southern took a handoff from his quarterback, Joe Ferguson, ran the ball 13 yards,
- 1:23:00and then the end zone with 1.12 left and a half, making the score the Buffalo Bills 14,
- 1:23:05the New York Jets 7.
- 1:23:06And then following a three-place series by the New York Jets,
- 1:23:11third down at fourth, Julian Fagan fronted the football,
- 1:23:15and Cahill returned it all the way for a touchdown,
- 1:23:18making the score at halftime here, the New York Jets 7, the Buffalo Bills 21.
- 1:23:23This is Larry Gressom, how they helped Bill Islund,
- 1:23:25and how that concerns our halftime guest in just a moment.
- 1:23:29Pepperality, Chrysler and Plymouth for 74.

- 1:24:02In 1973, Capitol Country will hear the New York Jets in action right here on WAVY's Sports Radio 14 Albany.
- 1:24:11This is Marty Glickman along with Larry Grampin.
- 1:24:13We'll bring you all the Jets action right from the 50-yard line at home and away.
- 1:24:30I'm Larry Grampin along with Marty Glickman at Shade Stadium, New York City, New York.
- 1:24:37Marty had to go down the sidelines at halftime today to present an award to two high school kids from the metropolitan area.
- 1:24:45I had time to guess today and we're awful lucky to have two such outstanding personalities of the New York Jets.
- 1:24:53First, let me introduce the president of the New York Jets football club, Mr. Phil Isman.
- 1:24:58Mr. Isman, we certainly appreciate your coming by and spending time with us.
- 1:25:02Thank you, Larry.
- 1:25:03And our second guest is none other than number 62, normally for the New York Jets in uniform, Al Atkinson.
- 1:25:10Al, we appreciate you coming by too.
- 1:25:13Chigger, it's always good to come by and see you work as a professional.
- 1:25:16Uh-oh, now we've got to explain that nickname that he put out over the airwaves.
- 1:25:20We've been guarding so closely this secret all year.
- 1:25:22But that has been my nickname for some years, Chigger.
- 1:25:25Mr. Isman, of course, this is an emotional day in the life of the New York Jets and an emotional day, of course, for the head coach, Coach Weeby Bay.
- 1:25:34Larry, the first thing I'd like to do is congratulate O.J. Simpson.
- 1:25:38I think he's a great athlete and a great person.
- 1:25:41And if anyone was entitled to the record, he was. Congratulations to him.
- 1:25:46I know, he certainly appreciates that.
- 1:25:47And, of course, we were always pulling for the Jets to win the ball game, but we also, in our own way, was pulling for O.J. Simpson to set the record today.
- 1:25:56He is a fine gentleman and one of the finest first houses in the National Football League today.
- 1:26:00And he is really a credit to the Buffalo Bills and the National Football League.
- 1:26:05I agree with you, Larry.
- 1:26:06Now, to get on with the retirement today of Coach Weeby Bay, I know you've been associated with Coach Weeby Bay in the 11 years he's been here with the New York Jets team.
- 1:26:16Well, Larry, I don't have to tell you because you're an ex-player.
- 1:26:20Weebs a great man and a great coach.
- 1:26:24Nobody will ever equal his record.
- 1:26:26As you know, he's won the championship in both leagues.
- 1:26:30So, unfortunately, it's snowing today and it's kind of a dismal day to go out of football.
- 1:26:38But Weebs will always be a credit to the New York Jets.
- 1:26:42I don't think that the weather really detracts from the importance of the day for Coach Weeby.
- 1:26:50Now, I'm not going to be realizing he's retiring from active coaching today, Mr. Islin,
- 1:26:54but what will his duties be on down the road next year for the New York Jets football team?
- 1:27:00Well, Larry, he'll be in the front office with me.
- 1:27:02He'll be a vice president.
- 1:27:04He's going to be in charge of the negotiations with players.
- 1:27:07We've got a new complex we're going to build for training out in Long Island.
- 1:27:11We've got a lot of work to do.
- 1:27:13And Weebs is going to be right there to help me do it.
- 1:27:15Well, Al, I know this is a sad day in the lives of all the ballplayers.
- 1:27:19Of course, you've played with Coach Eubank a number of years here on the Jet team.
- 1:27:23Right, Larry.
- 1:27:25Weebs I've looked up to as a father image.
- 1:27:29He's always been fair to me as a person and as a player.
- 1:27:33He's been very fair with me throughout my years negotiating with him.
- 1:27:37And as a coach, he brought me along slowly, my rookie year, and I thanked him very much for it.
- 1:27:42When he did give me a chance to play, I thanked him very highly for it.
- 1:27:47You know, he was always good to me both as a man and as a coach.
- 1:27:51Well, Al, you talk like you won't be around Coach Eubank any longer.
- 1:27:56And of course, you won't be around him as a coach, but he will be general manager next year.
- 1:28:00Right, I realize that, Larry.
- 1:28:02And as a general manager, you know, he's been very fair to me.
- 1:28:06And I think in the years to come, the fellows coming up on the team as jet player personnel
- 1:28:14and also as players, they'll find him as a very warm person, a very fair person.
- 1:28:19But I think the few wraps that he has taken in the newspapers aren't really fair ones.
- 1:28:26Are you going to be around him more often? Are you coming back next year?
- 1:28:29Oh, am I going to be back next year?
- 1:28:31Well, as I told a reporter about two weeks ago, if my leg does not come around, the answer is simply no.
- 1:28:39That was Al Atkinson.
- 1:28:41And of course, that was Barbara Sheehan, one of our sidekicks here with WR Radio, throwing that little question at Al.
- 1:28:47This is Larry Grantham, and I'll be back with our hand-time guest,
- 1:28:50President of New York, Justice Phil Isman and Al Atkinson in just a moment.

- 1:29:33Eparality means low 74 pepper price.
- 1:29:36High pepper trade-in plus low pepper down payment.
- 1:29:39Eparality, we can tell you, we can show you.

- 1:29:45Head for the home of Eparality.
- 1:29:47Ted Pepper, Chrysler Plymouth Route 9, Leith & Sells, Eparality.
- 1:29:51Eparality.
- 1:29:55This is Mary Grantham at Chase Stadium, where at half-time the Buffalo Bills lead the New
- 1:30:00York Jets by the score of 21 to 7.
- 1:30:03Marty Glickman is down in the field at the present time, giving an award to a couple
- 1:30:07of high school kids from the metropolitan area.
- 1:30:10And certainly we're missing Marty up here in the booth.
- 1:30:12Barbara Shearer is sitting here.
- 1:30:13We're talking with President of the New York Jets, Mr. Phil Isman, and of course with Al
- 1:30:17Atkinson, the fine middle linebacker who has, unfortunately, a groin injury and has been
- 1:30:22out for several weeks now.
- 1:30:24This isn't, I know, a lot of speculation, a lot of rumors are going around about Joe
- 1:30:28Namer and what his status is with the Jets football team and what his future is in New
- 1:30:33York City.
- 1:30:34Do you have any comments at this point?
- 1:30:35I know the contract negotiations here hasn't started exactly yet, and so therefore I'm
- 1:30:41sure it wouldn't be any definite answer.
- 1:30:43Well, Larry, it's all premature.
- 1:30:46There's been no conversation, no discussion about contracts.
- 1:30:50It's all the way in the future.
- 1:30:52Well, of course, that's what I say.
- 1:30:54It's exactly that.
- 1:30:55It's rumors.
- 1:30:56Now, of course, I don't think, well, from my standpoint and I know the standpoint of
- 1:31:00other former team members or team members, Joe's inability to play this year because
- 1:31:05of injuries, I don't think that in any way detracts from the importance of Joe Namer,
- 1:31:10the quarterback of the New York Jets.
- 1:31:12No, unfortunately he got hurt, Larry.
- 1:31:14There's nothing you can do about that.
- 1:31:16And of course, you're looking forward, I'm sure, to a very successful season next year
- 1:31:21with Joe, a quarterback, and without answers to the middle linebacker also.
- 1:31:25Don't forget Larry, our new coach next year, Charlie Winner.
- 1:31:27Oh, that's right.
- 1:31:28I think he's going to do a great job and once he's complete charge of everything in
- 1:31:33football, it's all his responsibility.
- 1:31:36It's hard for Joe Namer to wonder if he will leave or what all the speculation is.
- 1:31:40What actually will the World Football League or association mean to the NFL?
- 1:31:45Will this be another demuting of talent and franchise throughout the country as in the
- 1:31:52early days of the AM Bell and the NFL?
- 1:31:55Well, I haven't heard much about it.
- 1:31:56It's in its organizational stage and I don't think at this point there's anything to say about it.
- 1:32:02Well, Al, of course, I hadn't had your reaction yet to exactly what's happening down on the
- 1:32:08field today.
- 1:32:09O.J. Spencer's running for a lot of yards.
- 1:32:11He has 105 yards at half time.
- 1:32:13He's been on the record set by Jimmy Brown several years ago with the Cleveland Browns.
- 1:32:18But how would you try to defend against him if you were out there playing this afternoon?
- 1:32:22Well, I'll tell you, Larry, if I was a cowboy, I'd go after a plato.
- 1:32:25If I was a hunter, I'd use a gun.
- 1:32:27But he's got everything going for him.
- 1:32:29He's got a lead 21 to 7.
- 1:32:31He's got a ball control coach, Luke Saban.
- 1:32:34And they're certainly going to come out in a second half, hope to have the ball for maybe 12 minutes,
- 1:32:40run the ball maybe 30, 35 times, and they're not going to pass at all unless they fall behind.
- 1:32:45And to do that, Joe's going to have to put the points on the board real quickly.
- 1:32:49And also, he's got a rookie quarterback going for him.
- 1:32:52He's got a rookie quarterback and he's been concerned of all year.
- 1:32:54And plus, O.J. has gifted this year with the best offensive line Buffalo has had since the championship years of 64 and 65.
- 1:33:01Well, don't you think if you were a young quarterback coming into the National Football League,
- 1:33:05especially playing with a team like the Buffalo Bill and playing with O.J.
- 1:33:09if I was a young quarterback, I think I'd be pulling to give them the football more than I would other runners back.
- 1:33:15I agree with you, Larry.
- 1:33:17And he's gifted right now with two good running backs.
- 1:33:21And I'd hate to be a receiver on the Buffalo Bill.
- 1:33:25They're simply a blocker.
- 1:33:27And when you go in to negotiate, as all receivers do, they like to throw the statistics at the general manager.
- 1:33:33And of course, these poor guys don't have any stats at the end of the year.
- 1:33:36I think if they close out today at 9 and 5, they ought to be giving a nice ball.
- 1:33:42A great day commended.
- 1:33:44This is Larry Grapham, and I'll be back with our half-time guest, Mr. Bill Islund and Al Echolson in just a moment.
- 1:33:49Let the friendly people at Protective Loan give you a hand with Christmas shopping this season.
- 1:33:54Don't let being a bit short of cash wear this holiday season for your family.
- 1:33:58Visit a nearby Protective Loan office and help make this Christmas the marriage of holiday season.
- 1:34:02Protective Loan can help you with up to $2,500 in holiday shopping cash as a fast, personal, one-day service.
- 1:34:08There's a Protective Loan office near you in Albany at 215 Temple Avenue and 11 North Crow Street, and it's connected to you at 1884 State Street.
- 1:34:16Hey, you could have a soulful holiday just by tuning in to your radio to Wavy 14 every Saturday night at 9 and every Sunday night at 10, because the sun is so, and it has such a good sense of instant.
- 1:34:28Right here on Wavy 14. Remember, run a soul Saturday night at 9 and every Sunday night at 10. Right here on Wavy 14.
- 1:34:37Wavy 14, W-A-D-Y.
- 1:34:45Wavy 14.
- 1:34:55Wavy 14.
- 1:35:05I'm Larry Grantham, and at halftime here at Chase Stadium, the store is at Buffalo Bill 21, the New York Jets 7. Our halftime guests have been President of the New York Jets, Mr. Bill Islams and Al Atkinson, former captain and defensive linebacker for the New York Jets, number 62.
- 1:35:20I want to thank both of you for coming by and spending a few moments with us, and in our appreciation, a gift for you, a gift for Motorola.
- 1:35:27Motorola, makers of Quasar color portables, and Quasar works in the drawer, color TV consoles, all with Motorola Instamatic color tuning. Thank you both for coming by and chatting with us briefly, and good luck to the Jets, Mrs. Islams, and of course, Al, good luck to you in whatever your offseason endeavor might be.
- 1:35:44Thanks for having us, Barry. I'm glad you could be with us.
- 1:35:47Okay, and certainly a happy holiday season to both of you. I'm Larry Grantham, and we'll be back with a second half kickoff in just a moment.
- 1:35:53This is Bob Badger, manager of your radio station. The energy crisis is with us for sure, and media of all types are urging all of us to conserve energy.
- 1:36:02As media, we have responsibility to not only talk about energy conservation, but to participate as best we can ourselves, while still fulfilling our public service commitments.
- 1:36:11WABY has taken the following steps to conserve energy here at the station. WABY has discontinued broadcasting between 1 and 5.30 a.m., except on Friday and Sunday nights. The WABY mobile unit has been scheduled for fewer hours on area highways, searching out news.
- 1:36:28We feel we can be fully as effective utilizing the telephone. The WABY transmitter adequately covers Capitol land, utilizing only 1,000 watts of power. And we will keep at that level or less some of our competitors utilize 50 times more energy to provide basically the same service.
- 1:36:45And WABY has stepped up its program of converting from high-energy consuming vacuum tube type equipment to low-drain solid state equipment as supplied by our parent firm, the CCA Electronics Corporation. WABY can say with pride that we consume less energy by far than any other Albany radio station. Thank you for your interest.
- 1:37:06This is WABY.
- 1:37:36And now O.J. Simpson has broken that record here this afternoon. Of course, also along the line of records, O.J. Simpson needs 197 yards this afternoon to go over the 2,000 mark for the year. A 2,000 mark in rushing that's never been accomplished before in the history of professional football.
- 1:37:55At present time, as we said, he has 105 yards and looks like he's on his way to the 2,000 yard mark. The snow is gently falling now. It's not really such a slow storm or blizzard as we had thought it was earlier in the contest.
- 1:38:13But it's still coming down. The playing surface is almost completely blotted out. The lines are drawn for the contest this afternoon now being almost completely covered, especially down the grass portion of the field. The infield being a little darker and a little bit easier to see.
- 1:38:32Well, Marty, welcome back to broadcasting. And I know you did an outstanding job down there on the field and we had outstanding guests at hand signs, which you missed.
- 1:38:39Where do I get my breath? You know, Larry, we're comfortably ensconced here in the booth. This is quite good. There are no major problems up here in terms of wind and snow. But down there on the field, I didn't realize it. It's really fearful out there. This is a real blizzard.
- 1:38:57It's blowing and snowing hard. The snow is fairly wet. The field is really a mess out there now. No way you can really have good footing. And just being out there is real tough. The crowd is mostly under the fans right now as I found out trying to broken field my way through.
- 1:39:15Well, Marty, also at one point I don't think we brought up, but it should be brought up. You know, the worst part about being out there on an afternoon such as this is during the time out.
- 1:39:25You know, when you go out on the field, at times they have TV time out, radio time out, or an official time out or what have you, and you've got to stand out there like an idiot waiting for the action to be resumed.
- 1:39:36But yet you're still getting colder at the same time. You know, you've got to keep moving around out there to try to keep the circulation going and not to get too cold while you're standing on the field waiting for the action to get started.
- 1:39:47And right now, Bridges-Owens and Margie Natchez are waiting underneath that crossbar for the kickoff of the close end of the stadium. Well, I mean, it's rough out there. I didn't realize it was nearly as bad because we say we have this overhang here.
- 1:39:59And we're fairly comfortable. But out there, exposed to the elements, it's really rugged. As comfortable as you can be in 29 degree temperatures being outside even though being slightly exposed outside and with moisture all around you and the wind blowing sometime when you're beating in your face.
- 1:40:16Here's Leapfrog's kickoff now high and quite deep, way up there and it's six yards in the end. Someone is running, seeing him run up by Atkins. He pummels the ball as he runs it out. He's hit down around a 10-yard line and that's about where he is at the 12.
- 1:40:28The ball is so wet and the situation is so bad out there that it's running it out from back of his own goal line and in mid-slide he just dropped the football.
- 1:40:37Well, that's the kind of though that sometimes they pick up run all the way for the touchdown. Marty, I was a little disappointed it didn't go all the way on that one. It seems like when that does happen the defending team kind of relaxes a lot of times and he breaks it for a long game.
- 1:40:50But Margees couldn't quite get away that time. He did just drop the football out of sheer moisture or whatever. I don't see Emerson Boozer out there. I see Hank Bajorson. We haven't heard if he's injured or not.
- 1:41:00Back to pass on the first play is Namath throwing over the middle and it's caught by Caster. It fouls loose and they rule a completed pass. Good for a first down.
- 1:41:09The field judge ruling it a completed pass. He went down to the ground. Then it was fumbled loose. Caster made the grab and the ball was blown dead after the catch of the pass.
- 1:41:19The fumble is recovered by the Bills but it doesn't count. The fumble doesn't but the pass does and they bring it out to about the 28-yard line. Jim Trajanski made the tackle.
- 1:41:28So on the very first play Namath, despite the weather, throws that ball out to the 28. First and 10 out to 28-yard line of the New York Jets. The Jets are turning Bustle away. Score is 21 to 7.
- 1:41:38Hank Bajorcon and Mike Adamley are the running backs out of a froze set. Namath takes the snaps. Ducks back. Hands up on a draw play to Mike Adamley. Hits back over to the line of steamers and throws down for a loss.
- 1:41:47Earl Edwards again that defensive right hand number 73 and Jerry Patton number 77 came up to make the tackle. And it's a two-yard loss on the play back to the 26-yard line making a second and 12 out to 26 of the Jets.
- 1:41:59And of course as we often say in football position there's 90 percent of it. Earl Edwards had great position on Bob Woods. Adamley there was no hole inside. Adamley tried to dodge it outside. Of course they just slid off the block and made the tackle.
- 1:42:12He had great position. A lot of times you can come up with a great play. Let me correct the calling on the yardage on the last one. It's now second and 14 at the 24 of four-yard loss.
- 1:42:21Back to pass is Namath and second and long standing up. Throws down to the right side. And it's caught by Eddie Bell. Showed him a first down by two yards. It's up around the 36-yard line.
- 1:42:29And despite the weather, Joe Namath seems to be firing that ball better in the opening minutes here in the second half than he did in much of the first half.
- 1:42:36Well I think he's going to come out and throw the ball when you're 14 points down as I said right prior to halftime. There's no better quarterback in the league to have throwing the ball for you to get you back in the ball game than Joe Willie.
- 1:42:45And of course at halftime he went over the offensive patterns that the coaches in the locker room thought would work and that's what he's going to at this present time.
- 1:42:53It's third and three out to 36-yard line on the New York Jets. Third and three. A key play coming up right here.
- 1:42:59Throws set. Ball to the New York Jets. Namath is back to pass again. Throws out to the left flat. And it's stopped by Barkham. He had it right in his hands.
- 1:43:06That time you could see Joe Namath on that quick square out left to Barkham. Threw the ball before Barkham even turned. And as Barkham turned there it was, but he just couldn't get his hands out completely enough.
- 1:43:15Well that was bump and run coverage there Marty. The cornerback was up on him bumping and running with G. Barkham.
- 1:43:20And of course you drive down field and you drive deep enough to get that man off of you, away from you so that you can possibly get wide open on the play, get him going back with a good stride or two and then cut away from him.
- 1:43:33Well the timing was sloppy on the play because Joe threw the ball and Barkham turned around as the ball almost got to it.
- 1:43:39It's fourth and three in our front formation. The kick high and fairly deep. And it's being taken once again by Bill Cale. Cale hits down immediately this time by Cliff McLean of the Jets.
- 1:43:52The ball is at the 33 of the Buffalo Bills. There was first and 10 at the 33 yard line of the Buffalo Bills. The Bills were out in front by a score of 21 to 7. O.J. Simpson picked up 105 yards as I recall in the first half.
- 1:44:04He sure did and talking about running backs we just received word that Emerson Bruiser has received a bruise right by. Now I don't know exactly where he stands in his rushing attempts to catch the rushing record for the New York Jets record that is Matt Smale I think holds the record and Bruiser was pushing him quite closely prior to game time but he as a probably won't be active at the game.
- 1:44:25It's first and 10 at the 33 yard line. Joe Ferguson the quarterback. Hands off to Braxton. Braxton drives up the middle on a three power play goes right up to the 40 yard line as he picks up seven yards. John Edgerton now fakers your mind to stop him at the 40.
- 1:44:38So it'll be second and three at the 40 yard line of the Buffalo Bills. Bill Cale is out in front in this four game by a score of 21 to 7. We have some corrected figures for O.J. in that first half.
- 1:44:46He carried 19 times these figures are now official 19 carries in the first half for 108 yards. Of course all it needed was 61 yards to break the record set by the great Jimmy Brown.
- 1:44:58So he's well past that mark. He has yet to carry here in the second yard second half. He needs 89 yards for 2000 yards on the season.
- 1:45:06It's second and three at the 40 yard line. Chandler comes in motion to the right side. Braxton in front of O.J. Simpson. The hand goes to Braxton again. He drives up the middle. Has the first down. Keeps pulling forward and driving for seven yards before he stops up to the 47 yard line.
- 1:45:19Bill Ferguson and Phil Wise finally stop him but he's picked up another first down for the Buffalo Bills in two smashes. Found a big throwback.
- 1:45:28He goes from the 33 up to the 47 of the Buffalo Bills. 14 yards in two seven yard carries. And I'm certainly glad you corrected those yardage for O.J. because we've been giving him a little less credit than he deserves because we gave him credit for 105 yards and it was 108 yards and we do appreciate the correction because he's a fine gentleman and he needs those three yards.
- 1:45:49It's first and 10 at the 47 yard line of the Buffalo Bills. The Bills are leading in the football game by a score of 21 to 7. Four minutes to John in the second half. Chandler comes in motion on the right side. The hand up goes to O.J. Simpson. He drives up left tackle and goes for one yard. That's all. Up to the 48 yard line with John Little.
- 1:46:04He throws him back and going and limping now is Reggie McKenzie that find God who leads so many of the players for O.J. Simpson. McKenzie stays in the line up though. The ball is at the 48 yard line. It's second and nine at the 48 yard line. We see Joe Ferguson. It seems like he ever played. He's close to Bill B. and he comes over here and chats briefly with Coach Lou Saban about the play that's forthcoming. So even though they're not jumping players in and out and calling all the plays I think that a lot of plays are coming from the Buffalo Bills.
- 1:46:32It's second and nine at the 48 yard line of the Buffalo Bills. The Bills are leading in the ball game 21 to 7. Ferguson goes back to pass on second down setting up now a funny about the right side and it's tough by channel at the 40. He was on the inside line. He really won this and it's funny not going to bounce at about the 18 yard line 16 yard line of the New York jet.
- 1:46:52When he gets out of that time for Ferguson to throw that ball and Chantler made the grab he looted one man until Ralph Baker finally pulled him out from the side at the 16 yard line where it's first and 10 at the 16 on the jet.
- 1:47:04And of course the jet went a zone defense that time they weren't up there bumping around. They were just in the regular zone and if it's tight in I took him attacking the Burgess or the strong safety rather short flat area.
- 1:47:15And of course when he was attracted to the tight end and left Bob Chalmers underneath and open it outside and for Chalmers just to lose the tax return to the field for a long game.
- 1:47:24It's first and 10 at the 16 yard line channel now flank wide out to the left side that driving in towards the closed end of Shea Stadium.
- 1:47:31Joe Ferguson the quarterback of the ball club he takes it and he has dropped the back to back and drives it from the middle again and he goes from about four yards on the plate down about the 12 yard line.
- 1:47:39It'll be second and six after 12 Ralph Baker Burgess Owens and Phil Wise combined to stop him. This Jim Braxton is quite a football player and having quite a good day too.
- 1:47:47OJ used only once thus far in the second half on this drive. This drive began on the 33 of the Buffalo Bills and now down to the 12 yard line of the New York Jets.
- 1:47:56And at half time of course the Jets had to talk about defense and OJ's sense of it and had to talk about defense and Braxton quite as much.
- 1:48:03So therefore I think Coach Davis doing a wise thing and then Braxton care the ball because they should be key and the Jets should be key in an OJ defense.
- 1:48:10It's a winged G out of the eye formation and now peeling off to the right side comes Chalmers. A hand off goes to OJ. He drives off to the left guard.
- 1:48:16Break down on McClellan and tells him he's down about the six yard line and he may have the first down.
- 1:48:21The series began at the 16. He's down near the six yard line. And it's a first down. They place the ball down right close to the five yard line.
- 1:48:28It'll be first and goal is over five yards out. Dick Neal, John Little and Phil Wise combined it up.
- 1:48:33OJ, for now until after OJ picked up some six yards more. So he has seven yards thus far unofficially in the second half.
- 1:48:41Ted Troy comes in at tight end replacing J.D. Hill at the wide end. On the short yardage situation it's first and goal to go at the five yard line of the New York Jets.
- 1:48:50The Jets are clearly in the ball game 21 to 7. Chandler planks wide out to the left side of the left of the ball club is tight.
- 1:48:56High formation in the backfield. Braxton in front of OJ Simpson. And now they go into a side by side set.
- 1:49:04Man of motion comes to the right side. Chandler is in motion, still running.
- 1:49:08And the hand off goes to OJ driving off his own left guard. Cuts back inside and goes to the three yard line. He's up to the three.
- 1:49:15John Ebersole makes the tackle. It'll be second and goal to go about three yards out from the New York Jets goal line.
- 1:49:21The Jets are trailing in the ball game 21 to 7. They have to hold here to stay within range of these Buffalo Bills.
- 1:49:28And of course you see the New York Jets now trying to move their defenses around. They think that some of the players may be coming in so they change their defense right prior to snap the ball.
- 1:49:36But of course Ferguson comes out with a quick count and catches it while they're moving. It's really going to be trouble because OJ will be in the end zone before they get their defenses set.
- 1:49:44Again it's a tight wing to the back to side by side. Braxton and OJ second and goal to go on the three yard line. Ferguson calls, signals peeling off to the left side.
- 1:49:52Chandler, the hand off goes to Braxton. He drives off left guard. Goes right to the goal line but not in. He's about a foot or so shy from the goal line.
- 1:49:59Ferguson and Ebersole stop him. It'll be third and goal to go about a yard out.
- 1:50:04Driving in towards the close end of Shea Stadium. There are great big patches of open seats here in Shea now.
- 1:50:09At halftime when I was down on the field and making my way to the field there were thousands and thousands of spectators under the fans getting out from under in the cold and the damp of the snow today.
- 1:50:19It's third, goal to go at the one yard line. Third and goal at the one. 21 to 7 Buffalo Leeds and they're threatening to score again.
- 1:50:27Third and goal. The New York Jets defense digs in. Chandler, Braxton on the left side. The rest of the team is tight.
- 1:50:32Third and goal on the one. Now Chandler comes in motion on the right. Running back of his lineman. Still running. And Ferguson hands off to Braxton and goes in for the touchdown.
- 1:50:40Braxton goes off the middle and goes in for the score and it's now 27 to 7 Buffalo over the New York Jets.
- 1:50:48One of the combinations for Buffalo to get into the playoffs, one of the outside chances they have, is that they were required to score at least 22 points.
- 1:50:56Well now they've scored 27 points and they must hold the Jets to less than 17 and of course so far they've held them to seven.
- 1:51:03There are all kinds of combinations and convolutions of what can happen on the other teams before the Buffalo Bills can get into the playoffs.
- 1:51:10But they had to get at least 22 points and they've done that already. And they had to win the ball game as well.
- 1:51:15Ha ha, it looks like they're doing that pretty headily too Marty. Here's the point after 10 coming up right now.
- 1:51:20Leap ball will kick it. Chandler will hold. They're going to think, oh the ball is now placed down and kicked down and threw it out.
- 1:51:25So there's a timeout on the field. The score on the Buffalo Bills 28 down the New York Jets 7.
- 1:51:30When you think about it, leather has become an important part of today's scene, especially in the clothing men are wearing.
- 1:51:36And so has another kind of love of men wear. English leather trovetries.
- 1:51:40English leather fits the way lots of men live. And women love that clean, honest scent.
- 1:51:45That's why so many women give their men English leather. Everything from English leather aftershave to body towels.
- 1:51:52English leather's handsome gift sets are in fine stores all over town. So tell her you wear English leather or nothing at all.
- 1:52:01When you take a medicine, you should follow label directions. But some people have excuses.
- 1:52:06Eww, you can read labels in the middle of the night.
- 1:52:10A tablespoon has got to work faster than a teaspoon.
- 1:52:14I can't wait, Ty. Jimmy's crying.
- 1:52:17Sorry, there is no excuse. The label tells you what it's for, how much to take, and when to take it.
- 1:52:23Read the label directions. Medicines can't help you if you don't take them right.
- 1:52:27From the Council on Family Health.
- 1:52:30Baby party!
- 1:52:35This is Marty Gleckman with Larry Cranston speaking to you from Shea Stadium on the occasion of the last football game of the year involving the New York Jets.
- 1:52:42They trail the Buffalo Bills by a score of 28 to 7 with 6 minutes and 25 seconds remaining in this third period.
- 1:52:49All kinds of records being set by O.J. Simpson and the Buffalo Bills as well.
- 1:52:53I'll tell you about that field record in just a moment.
- 1:52:56They pull ready to kick off once again for the Buffalo Bills.
- 1:52:59Atkins and Owens in twin safeties at the goal line for the kickoff.
- 1:53:04Here's the booth, high and quite deep, coming down two yards in the end zone.
- 1:53:09He's pulling in there as close as possible so now he does not run about.
- 1:53:12He touches his knee down indicating the automatic touchback.
- 1:53:15These Buffalo Bills had to rush for 177 yards in order to break the Miami Dolphins all-time NFL record for yardage rushed by a team during a season set last year.
- 1:53:28Well, they've surpassed that mark thus far in the ballgame.
- 1:53:31They've rushed for more than 177 yards so they have the all-time rushing record for one season in the NFL, the Buffalo Bills.
- 1:53:38And of course you know about O.J.'s marks already.
- 1:53:41So it's first and 10 now for the New York Jets at the 20-yard line.
- 1:53:44Joe Name is going all the way, flat formation of the right side, running backs of the Joplin and Attenley.
- 1:53:49Emerson Brews are hit from the first half.
- 1:53:51A Brews side.
- 1:53:52Name is throwing on first down deep down to the right side.
- 1:53:54And it's caught by Falken Falken drives past this field, goes for 45 with the Buffalo Bills.
- 1:54:00A deep pattern run by Chief Falken, going from the outside down the far side line and cutting deep over the middle.
- 1:54:07And Joe Name is throwing on a live drive fuller.
- 1:54:10He was tackled by Bob James, number 20 of the Buffalo Bills, at the 45-yard line of the Bills.
- 1:54:15Big play for New York. They picked up 35 yards down the first down to the 45 of the Bills.
- 1:54:20And a lot of football is rhythm, Marty.
- 1:54:22And I believe Joe has caught the rhythm of the Buffalo Bills in the fact that they're on, in a man-to-man coverage most times on first down.
- 1:54:28That time he caught him single covering E. Barkham with Bob James.
- 1:54:31And of course James is a fine cornerback but he just didn't cover Barkham all the way down the field on that one.
- 1:54:35Back to Passage, Name is looking to throw. Now he throws over the middle and it's caught by Katnall.
- 1:54:39It's stopped. In and out of the arms of Rich Castor.
- 1:54:42He was hit immediately when the ball got to him.
- 1:54:44Hit high and hard by Dick Lewis and it's an incomplete pass.
- 1:54:47So it'll be second and ten at the 45-yard line of the Buffalo Bills.
- 1:54:51The New York Jets are trailing in the ball game 28 to 7.
- 1:54:54But Name does have the facility to bring that ball club back with one big play.
- 1:54:58And of course there it looked like that Richard Castor was second here.
- 1:55:01It's a second here to see if G. Barkham looked like what's called a little out pattern.
- 1:55:05But G. Barkham didn't turn around quite as quick as Joe Winn to throw the football.
- 1:55:08So he went to Castor and Adley a tight situation through the ball behind him.
- 1:55:12So it was a tough case.
- 1:55:14Slot formation on the right side. Once again this is the same formation that he completed the pass to Barkham on.
- 1:55:19Barkham goes down field on the pass play and Name is a short back of a line of damage and throws for a loss.
- 1:55:24And do we get that big donation?
- 1:55:28I don't believe so. I believe that was number 71 that attacked him back there.
- 1:55:32Mike Hadish back there behind the line of scrimmage.
- 1:55:35So in fact we got to have Wal Patel because the only guy on the Buffalo Bills defensive line that can collect that money for those victims of multiple feroces back in Buffalo.
- 1:55:45So hopefully for the benefit of the people up there they still get one back this afternoon.
- 1:55:51Well it's third and 18 as a result of an eight-yard loss.
- 1:55:53Third and 18 at the 47-yard line of a jet.
- 1:55:56Mike White to the right side of the belly belt.
- 1:55:58Flip wide left is G. Barkham.
- 1:56:00Pro set. Adam Liam to Jocelyn in the backfield.
- 1:56:03Going back to pass with Name.
- 1:56:04A setting up now. Looking down field and throwing deep.
- 1:56:06Way down field to Barkham and it is incomplete.
- 1:56:09Almost intercepted by Bob James.
- 1:56:11He had both hands on it and he could not hold onto the ball as he and Barkham went down on the ground.
- 1:56:16Well now that was a third down play and they did double cover G. Barkham.
- 1:56:19But it wasn't any secret to the play.
- 1:56:21Joe went back. He thought it was single coverage.
- 1:56:23He just cut loose with the ball down field.
- 1:56:25Unfortunately G. Barkham was double covered with the safety coming over to cover him and almost had to intercept it.
- 1:56:31Here are some further scores.
- 1:56:33In the third quarter Minnesota 17.
- 1:56:35The New York Giants nothing.
- 1:56:37In the second period Kansas City 13.
- 1:56:39San Diego 3.
- 1:56:41In the third quarter Washington 24.
- 1:56:43Philadelphia 13.
- 1:56:45In the second quarter Green Bay 7.
- 1:56:47Chicago Bears nothing.
- 1:56:49Punch formation now Julian Sagan standing back on the zone.
- 1:56:5138-yard line moose hold and gets the kick away.
- 1:56:53It's a high floater way up there.
- 1:56:56And it's caught now by Donnie Walker.
- 1:56:58Walker starts to his left, cuts back to the right and he's tipped up and down by three of the Jets.
- 1:57:02Back on the 16-17 yard line.
- 1:57:05Another score in the third period Atlanta 14.
- 1:57:08New Orleans nothing.
- 1:57:09Here at State Stadium the New York Jets are trailing by a score of 28-7 as the timeout calls.
- 1:57:15The score the Buffalo Bills 28.
- 1:57:17The New York Jets 7.
- 1:57:18We'll take a 60 second jet break for Justin Affleck.

- 1:58:28First man at the 17-yard line, a hand across the fraction.
- 1:58:31He drives up the middle and goes for four yards before he stops at the 21-yard line.
- 1:58:36Straight ahead, a power smash by Jim Braxton has done quite a job for the Buffalo Bill today.
- 1:58:41Not only carrying the ball, but leading the way for O.J. Simpson as well.
- 1:58:45It's going to be second and sixth at the 21 of the Buffalo Bill.
- 1:58:49Four minutes and 55 seconds to go in this third quarter.
- 1:58:52The Buffalo Bill is out in front by a score of 28-7.
- 1:58:55They've dominated the ball, came except for one long scoring pass by Joe Namath, good for 48 yards.
- 1:59:01Chandler goes in motion on the left side, running back of his lineman, still in motion.
- 1:59:05Now the hand goes to O.J. Simpson.
- 1:59:07A tap from the middle, he drives up for one yard and he stops at the 22, maybe the 23-yard line.
- 1:59:11Two yards on the play.
- 1:59:12John Ebersole made the tackle.
- 1:59:14It'll be third and four at the 23-yard line.
- 1:59:17The snow has let up.
- 1:59:19I believe that it's beginning to rain a little bit now.
- 1:59:22Perhaps a combination of rain, sleet, and snow.
- 1:59:24We don't see these swirling flakes any longer, as we did throughout the first half of the ball game and well before the game started.
- 1:59:31But there are, well there's some kind of a grump that's coming down, a combination of rain, sleet, and snow, as he said.
- 1:59:38Now it's third and four at the 23-yard line of the Buffalo Bill.
- 1:59:41They're out in the outfield driving in towards the closed end of Shea Stadium.
- 1:59:45Ferguson takes the snapback, hands off the fraction, they get a drive up the middle once more, and he may have enough for the first down.
- 1:59:50It's going to be very, very close.
- 1:59:52He had to get over the 25 to the 27-yard line.
- 1:59:54The series began on the 17, and he's very close to the 27-28.
- 1:59:59They're going to measure on this one.
- 2:00:02And they are, they signal a first down.
- 2:00:04Oh, they signal a first down, that's what it is, up to the 28-yard line.
- 2:00:07So it's first and 10 after 28.
- 2:00:09And I got a hunch that after the rest of the afternoon we're going to see a lot of this type of football by Buffalo.
- 2:00:14They're going to grind it out, keep it on the ground, and try to keep this part running, keep it moving, and get this game over with now.
- 2:00:20So they're going to try to keep the ball away from Joe Namath also, because they know he has the ability to come back.
- 2:00:25First and 10 at the 28-yard line of the Buffalo Bill.
- 2:00:28Again, Chandler comes in motion, runs right along behind the offensive lineman, keeps in motion.
- 2:00:33Now they have to go to OJ Simpson trying to swing wide, shot back to the line of human support for a loss.
- 2:00:37A three-yard loss on the play, back to the 25-yard line.
- 2:00:40Burgess Owen, strong safety, and Bill Ferguson, the rookie linebacker, combining to stop him.
- 2:00:45And I think that's one time of going to the well once too often, Marty, because they've used that play quite successfully all afternoon.
- 2:00:51They've motioned Chandler away from the play, and the ball off to OJ, going back to the tight end side.
- 2:00:56Burgess Owen came across fast and made the play turn back to the inside and also helped make the tackle.
- 2:01:02And Bill Ferguson just scooted out there from his right linebacker position, that position out there waiting for it.
- 2:01:06And just dropped OJ for the loss.
- 2:01:08Now it's a flanker tee to the right side.
- 2:01:10They shift into a side-by-side set in the backfield, running back to Braxton and Simpson.
- 2:01:15And they have to go to OJ trying to swing wide on the power sweep, cuts in off the tackle, drives upfield, goes up to the 30-yard line.
- 2:01:20This is the 31. He stops the 31-yard line. He picks up 6 yards.
- 2:01:24It'll be third and seven after 31.
- 2:01:27And as you indicate, Larry, they're keeping the ball on the ground, running it off the tackles, up the middle by Braxton, outside by OJ Simpson.
- 2:01:34Not going to let time make by Ralph Vickers and John Eddison.
- 2:01:37John Elliott also went on the play.
- 2:01:39Ball plays down at the 32-yard line, makes it third and six after 32.
- 2:01:43And of course, this is a tough situation for any of the New York Jets players.
- 2:01:47No matter what happens this afternoon, they're not going anywhere except home now.
- 2:01:50It's either four and ten on the season, or five and nine.
- 2:01:53And it's nowhere in the afternoon, the last game of the season.
- 2:01:56Boy, it's tough to know if they decide to get ready to play this football game.
- 2:02:00Well, it's third and six after 32. Ferguson looking over the defense.
- 2:02:05Calling signals, takes a snap. Hands off to OJ. OJ drives up right tackle.
- 2:02:09He breaks down the clear along the near sideline.
- 2:02:11A man has been cut back inside, and Ferguson's almost pulled him down behind as he cuts back inside of early Thomas.
- 2:02:17A fine run by OJ Simpson. He drives down to about the 47-yard line of the New York Jets.
- 2:02:24Boy, that Reggie McKenzie let him upfield, and he really hid behind McKenzie until he made that cut.
- 2:02:29One point I'd like to make, Marty, and I believe you might have stated too, is we both watched the play on our side of the field.
- 2:02:34As OJ scooted up the sideline, one man was coming from the left side of the field from OJ's blind spot, early Thomas.
- 2:02:41And of course, inadvertently, OJ cut back trying to get away from early Thomas, and did elude him.
- 2:02:46But it's almost like a guy having eyes in the back of his head.
- 2:02:49Did you see the move he put on to get away from early Thomas as he came across to make him cut back?
- 2:02:53It was fantastic, and on this wet, sloppy field as well.
- 2:02:56First and 10th at the 42, a 26-yard run on the last play.
- 2:02:59The handoff goes to Braxton. He pulls up the middle like a tank.
- 2:03:02He just lowered his head and joined at the 43-pounds, came pulling right up the middle.
- 2:03:06A fine block from Mike Montler, his center, in front of him.
- 2:03:10And he picked up about 6 yards, or 7 yards on the play.
- 2:03:13Down to about the 35-yard line. It'll be second and three at the 35 as the Gunstowns ending the third quarter.
- 2:03:19That's the end of the third quarter in a score.
- 2:03:21The Buffalo Bills 28, the New York Jets 7.
- 2:03:24Let's take a 60-second jet break before this announcement.
- 2:03:27Pepparality. Chrysler's and Plymouth's for 74.
- 2:03:31Headpepper, Route 9, and Latham sell Pepparality.
- 2:03:34If it's 74 new car time for you, don't dock yourself out running around.
- 2:03:38Pepparality means low 74 pepper price.
- 2:03:41High pepper trade-in plus low pepper down payment.
- 2:03:44Pepparality, we can tell you, we can show you.
- 2:03:47But until you buy, you can't try Pepparality.
- 2:03:50Head for the home of Pepparality. Headpepper, Chrysler, Plymouth, Route 9, Latham, Pepparality.
- 2:03:56Hey Jack, you can have a soulful napkin.
- 2:04:01This is my tuning in your radio to Wavy 14 every Saturday night at 9 and every Sunday night at 10.
- 2:04:05Because the son of soul, Eddie Harris, says he does his thing right here on Wavy 14.
- 2:04:10Remember, brother soul, Saturday night at 9 and Sunday night at 10, right here on Wavy 14.
- 2:04:17Pepparality, we can tell you, we can show you.
- 2:04:22Pepparality, we can tell you, Pepparality.
- 2:04:27Pepparality, Pepparality.
- 2:04:34With Larry Grant and I'm Marty Glickman speaking to you from Shade Stadium in New York City.
- 2:04:37As the New York Jets are trailing the Buckeye Bill 28-7, OJ Simpson has 147 yards already.
- 2:04:43As the New York Jets are trailing the Buckeye Bill 28-7, OJ Simpson has 147 yards already.
- 2:04:48With Glickman and football history, they have reached 2,000 yards.
- 2:04:532,000 yards in one season. He already has broken Jimmy Brown's record.
- 2:04:58He needed 61 yards to break the record. He has 147 yards already today.
- 2:05:03WVY, 4th Radio, 14-4.
- 2:05:08Hey, that's right, I never saw it that way, Larry, but that is a mighty good way of putting it.
- 2:05:12I think they did it last year and now OJ Simpson is going to do it on his own.
- 2:05:17It looks like if he has a count of fourth quarter, he's had so far the other three quarters of the afternoon.
- 2:05:23Well, it's second and fourth, 37-yard line of the Jets.
- 2:05:28The handoff goes to Braxton again, he drives up the middle.
- 2:05:31Breakdown on the clip of the mold, gets the first down and Marcus down on the 25-yard line
- 2:05:34and keeps driving to about the 23-yard line.
- 2:05:36Burgess-Owens and Jellis-Howell finally stop him.
- 2:05:39It looks like all desire. That's the difference between these two ball clubs.
- 2:05:43The New York Jets, I think, are playing out of the string right now.
- 2:05:46Those Buffalo Bills are going for all the marbles.
- 2:05:49Well, I think you said it exactly right, Marty.
- 2:05:51You know, it's a lot of difference in having your bags packed.
- 2:05:53So even hopefully to go to a playoff game and having your bags packed to go home after the ball game is over this afternoon.
- 2:05:59Buffalo Bill ball club is playing first grade football, first and 10 out of 23.
- 2:06:04They already have set a rushing record for the National Football League in this ball game, over 177 yards.
- 2:06:11Handoff goes to OJ, trying to flick him to the left end.
- 2:06:13He's got Parkinson's from him. He drives downfield along the mid-side line, but he's not got a bounce at the 16-yard line.
- 2:06:18He picks up seven yards. Bill Ferguson driving him out of bounds.
- 2:06:22It'll be second and three after 16 again. Those two big guards, Reggie McKenzie and Joe Dilanolo.
- 2:06:29Dilanolo is just a rookie out of Michigan State.
- 2:06:31He'll be a second-year man out of Michigan. He'll be around a long time, Larry.
- 2:06:35Unless Andrews pours them out, they sure do will, Marty.
- 2:06:37But one other sideline that I think is a distinct possibility.
- 2:06:42I've been around this Jets football team ever since Joe Namath's been the quarterback here.
- 2:06:46I can't remember a year that the Buffalo Bills beat a Joe Namath, even a Joe Namath on the squad team twice in one year.
- 2:06:54I don't believe it's happened over the course of Joe's career here with the Jets.
- 2:06:58That is 28-7, Buffalo in that driving. Now the Bills are second and three of the 16-yard line of a New York Jets.
- 2:07:03Man in motion, a scambler going to the right side.
- 2:07:06Ferguson takes a snap. He gives off to the big fullback, Braxton again, who spins away and goes down to the 10-yard line to get the first down.
- 2:07:14He picks up six yards. John Elliott made the tackle at the 10.
- 2:07:18Let's see where they place that ball down. It's first and goal at the 10-yard line. That's what it is.
- 2:07:24Maybe the bags have better footing out there than the linebackers. It's first and goal to go at the 10-yard line.
- 2:07:29Eye formation in the backfield. Braxton in front of O.J. Steps in. Ferguson calling signals out of the wing T.
- 2:07:34The handoff goes to O.J. Swinging wide around the left side. He goes to two yards down to the eight-yard line.
- 2:07:39It's second and goal to go at the eight as Burgess-Owens led the drive. Bill Ferguson helping out as well.
- 2:07:45One of the bright spots for the New York Jets this year has been Burgess-Owens, the fine rookie from Miami.
- 2:07:50Another two yards. 156 yards we have unofficially. 156 yards for O.J. Simpson.
- 2:07:56What an afternoon's work. But you did say Burgess-Owens was a bright spot.
- 2:08:01He's a rookie out of the University of Miami. Six to 200 pounds, strong safety.
- 2:08:05And I would say that he has a long career ahead of him also, Marty. He's had a terrific year.
- 2:08:09He can play cornerbacks, free safety, or strong safety. But he settled down to strong safety and has played there all year long and has done a real fine job.
- 2:08:17Second and goal to go at the eight-yard line of the New York Jets. The Buffalo Bills in possession.
- 2:08:20The head up goes to Braxton. He drives down the middle, pulls away, veers down to the three-yard line.
- 2:08:24He stops at the three. Back up by Ralph Baker on the play at the three-yard line.
- 2:08:28Again, he was stopped about a yard past the line of Swing. He spun and pulled away, veered off to the right, and went down to the three-yard line, picking up an additional four yards.
- 2:08:38Third and goal on the three-yard line of the New York Jets. The Buffalo Bills started this drive back on their own 17-yard line.
- 2:08:45And here they are down at the three-yard line of the Jets. Third, goal to go.
- 2:08:52Well, those Jets got to now really gear up and try to keep them out of that end zone.
- 2:08:56I think that Ralph Baker, the defensive captain, will be talking with each one of his linemen or trying to pat them on the rear end and tell them,
- 2:09:02get on in there, you know, we've got to stop them here down at the goal line. We've got to have some pride left there at the ballgames over.
- 2:09:07Third and goal to go on the three. The two running back to side by side. The handoff touch to OJ.
- 2:09:11He goes inside his own left tackle, and he stops at the line of scrimmage. No gain. No gain on the play.
- 2:09:15Good play by Bill Ferguson, number 58, the outside linebacker, that rookie from San Diego State.
- 2:09:22Now they're going to go for a field goal attempt. Here's John Leapford running out on the field.
- 2:09:26It's fourth and goal to go at the three. As of right now, OJ Simpson has 156 yards.
- 2:09:31He's broken Jimmy Brown's record. And the Buffalo Bill offensive unit has broken the Miami Dolphins rushing record for a single-season play.
- 2:09:40And OJ also has broken the record for the number of carries in the course of the single-season, also held by Jimmy Brown.
- 2:09:46Quiet.
- 2:09:47That just means that all the Jets are going to record books, and it's not a real happy occasion when you get your name in the record books,
- 2:09:52especially if the Jets are going to do this afternoon.
- 2:09:54Twelve-yard field goal attempt. The angle to the right to kick us up, and it is good. It's good.
- 2:09:58As the time out on the field to score, the Buffalo Bill's 30, the New York Jets' 7.
- 2:10:04I did a little combo munch, peanut brittle, candy bars, I've got peanuts by the brunch.
- 2:10:11They've got a fistful of peanuts in every bar, pretty much.
- 2:10:16A fistful of peanuts in buttery grits will make the munch, peanut brittle bar great.
- 2:10:24It's just the nuttiest candy bar I've ever seen.
- 2:10:30Combo munch is what's different about peanut brittle. It's made with peanuts, less brittle.
- 2:10:36Munch starts with crunchy roasted peanuts, a whole fistful of them.
- 2:10:41Then we add rich, buttery brittle. Mmm-hmm.
- 2:10:45Peanut heaven, combo munch, a fistful of peanuts in buttery brittle.
- 2:10:50A fistful of peanuts in every bar makes the munch, peanut brittle bar great.
- 2:10:55It's just the nuttiest candy bar I've ever seen.
- 2:11:00There's a fistful of peanuts in buttery brittle.
- 2:11:04And gravy for a scene.
- 2:11:06...26, 14, action.
- 2:11:10With Larry Grassley and Marty Glickman.
- 2:11:12On the latter of the two doesn't add very well. The score is 31-7.
- 2:11:17And Syracuse training.
- 2:11:20Oh well, have to live with this Mississippi draw.
- 2:11:24Well we've got a few minutes before the kickoff Marty.
- 2:11:26I want to tell you it's really been a pleasure for me to be up here with you this year.
- 2:11:29Not down in this snow-covered field getting run over by the Braxton and O.J. Simpson.
- 2:11:33And you have been most generous to me and most kind throughout the whole year.
- 2:11:36You mean publicly I want to say thank you to you, our producer, WR Radio, and everybody we've worked with throughout the course of years.
- 2:11:43Larry Grassley, you know what you just said.
- 2:11:46You'd rather be up here than be knocked aside by Jim Braxton and O.J. Simpson. I thank you.
- 2:11:51Here's the kickoff, a low-bounding kick taken by Marjane Atkins.
- 2:11:54He runs through the purchase arms and keeps on running up to the 15 and it's hit high and hard and down around the 17-18 yard line.
- 2:12:02Well Larry, at this stage of the season, the final game, the final broadcast, last half of the game, the last quarter, just about 10 minutes and 45 seconds to go in the game.
- 2:12:10It's trying to stay so long until next year for so many of us.
- 2:12:14I know your first year on the broadcast was a hope you enjoyed it.
- 2:12:17And as I said earlier, you came a long way in one year of broadcasting than any man I've ever worked with.
- 2:12:23Of course you had a long way to go, Larry.
- 2:12:25Thank you, Marty. I certainly appreciate that.
- 2:12:27And prior to getting down to locker room, I want to wish everybody a happy holiday season and the best of everybody in the coming year.
- 2:12:34Thank you, Larry. Club formation on the right side.
- 2:12:36First and center on the 17, Namath going down to the end.
- 2:12:39Goes deep down to the left side.
- 2:12:40The caster at the office chest has two men lead by the air.
- 2:12:44Caster on the man to bang against him, Ernie Kellerman.
- 2:12:47He hit off the chest of Rich Caster and fell incomplete.
- 2:12:50Tough catch under any circumstances.
- 2:12:52Both men leaping high in the air for him.
- 2:12:54Hey, I just saw something happen.
- 2:12:56You know, a lot of big fans would throw their snowballs down in the jet puddle and in the Buffalo Bill puddle.
- 2:13:01Joe Namath turned around and picked up a snowball and threw it back in the sand.
- 2:13:04He wanted Joe to hit his arm and say, okay.
- 2:13:08Unpredictable Joe Namath. Colorful, exciting, temperamental.
- 2:13:14He's all those things.
- 2:13:17Club formation on the right side.
- 2:13:18Flip left, then caster.
- 2:13:20Hand up, goes down to the end of the way, drives up the middle, breaks down to the quick.
- 2:13:22Keep going, goes up to the 28-yard line before he stops.
- 2:13:25He's got the first down.
- 2:13:27That's another black plot for the New York Jets, I thought, this year.
- 2:13:30The play of Mike Adamay.
- 2:13:32He has had a pretty good year, Marty.
- 2:13:33And we've all, you've often called him a twisting, squirming.
- 2:13:37I don't know all the adjectives, but he does get that additional yardage some way.
- 2:13:40He breaks out behind those big linemen.
- 2:13:42And of course the defensive team at times has a hard time seeing him.
- 2:13:46And when they finally see him, he's already passing.
- 2:13:48You get one hand on him and you don't bring him down.
- 2:13:50So he's had a good year.
- 2:13:51I think a lot of the Jets have had good years.
- 2:13:53And we're proud for him, even though the record doesn't reflect the years that some of them have had.
- 2:13:58Club formation, the flip left end as well.
- 2:14:00Going back to pass the name of the left flat and it's dropped.
- 2:14:02You say nice things about Mike Adamay, you see what happens.
- 2:14:05Well, we'll be quiet from now.
- 2:14:07He threw a quick pass down the left flat.
- 2:14:08He was looking for Rich Castor deep down field.
- 2:14:10Castor was covered.
- 2:14:11He threw to the left flat and I think that Mike took his eyes off the ball just before it got to him.
- 2:14:15So it makes it second and stand at the 28-yard line of the New York Jets.
- 2:14:18The Jets are trailing Buffalo 31 to 7 with 9 minutes and 54 seconds remaining in this game.
- 2:14:23And the Bills have achieved all the records they sought for except one.
- 2:14:27And that is 2,000 yards over one season for OJ Simpson.
- 2:14:31He still needs something like, let me see, 41 yards.
- 2:14:34And you've got to admire Joe Namath.
- 2:14:36He's still throwing the football there behind 31 to 7 last game of the season.
- 2:14:40He can hand the ball off the running back and say you get it, but no, he's throwing the ball.
- 2:14:43I like that.
- 2:14:44Second and stand at the 28-yard line.
- 2:14:46He throws out to the left side.
- 2:14:47Deflected at the last moment.
- 2:14:48Waiting down field with the castor board.
- 2:14:50Deflected by Jim Siamski just before it got to Rich Castor.
- 2:14:53On a deep button hook.
- 2:14:54And one of the Jets and one of the David Walpatowski.
- 2:14:58That's right.
- 2:14:59Dave and Walpatowski just got off against each other for just a moment.
- 2:15:02They're separated and no punches are thrown.
- 2:15:05It'll be third and stand at the 28-yard line.
- 2:15:07And admiration for Joe for throwing the ball.
- 2:15:09Yes, admiration for his judgment out there on the field.
- 2:15:12I certainly have because he didn't go up inside to break up Dave Herman and Walpatowski
- 2:15:16when they were kind of scuffling there.
- 2:15:18He stood back and watched.
- 2:15:19And here's a happy note.
- 2:15:20Emerson Bouger is not going to line up for the New York Jets.
- 2:15:24Now I believe that's David Knight out there, Marty.
- 2:15:27It's 82 to 32.
- 2:15:28David Knight came in and running back spot and now he's out wide.
- 2:15:31They're going to have four receivers up on that line of scrimmage.
- 2:15:33Joe's really going to break up and throw that ball.
- 2:15:36That's right.
- 2:15:37Only one deep back.
- 2:15:38Hank Pachotlin.
- 2:15:39Signals are being called out of a double wing formation.
- 2:15:41Back to pass.
- 2:15:42His name is setting up and throwing out to the left side.
- 2:15:44And it's wise for David Knight incomplete.
- 2:15:46Third will be fourth and stand at the 28-yard line.
- 2:15:48Emerson Bouger did not come back into the lineup.
- 2:15:51He went out late in the first half of the bruised side.
- 2:15:54And David Knight came into the lineup.
- 2:15:56One downfield pass was thrown wide for him.
- 2:15:58Now the Jets are forced to front.
- 2:15:59Fourth and stand at the 28-yard line.
- 2:16:01And there were nine minutes and 42 seconds to go in the game.
- 2:16:03And now it's beginning to rain.
- 2:16:05And the snow is all gone in terms of it falling.
- 2:16:08It's down there on the field, of course.
- 2:16:10But it's raining now and sleeting as well.
- 2:16:13And the fans are starting to move out continuously.
- 2:16:16I think that's why David Knight was supposed to go to the outside.
- 2:16:19He cut across the middle and Joe threw the ball to the outside.
- 2:16:21So it wasn't any chance to complete it.
- 2:16:24Here's the punt by Fagan.
- 2:16:25Fairly short and it's taken by Walker.
- 2:16:27Walker starts to his right, loses one man, drives upfield.
- 2:16:30And he's stopped out about the 42-yard line.
- 2:16:34So the Buffalo Bills take over.
- 2:16:37OJ is out there. Yes, he is.
- 2:16:38OJ Simpson runs out, number 32.
- 2:16:41Time has taken. The score, the Buffalo Bills, 31.
- 2:16:43The New York Jets, 7.
- 2:16:45Let's take a 60-second jet break for a different answer.
- 2:16:49Eparality.
- 2:16:51Chrysler's implements were 74.
- 2:16:53Head Pepper route 9 and Latham fell.
- 2:16:55Pepperality. If it's 74 in your car time for you, don't dock yourself out running around.
- 2:17:00Pepperality means low 74 Pepper price.
- 2:17:03High Pepper trade-in plus low Pepper down payment.
- 2:17:06Pepperality, we can tell you, we can show you.
- 2:17:09But until you buy, you can't try Pepperality.
- 2:17:12Head for the home of Pepperality.
- 2:17:14And Pepper, Chrysler Plymouth with 9 Latham, Pepperality.
- 2:17:18Hello, I have just about 30 seconds to show you or your company
- 2:17:22just one way to make your savings work as hard as you do.
- 2:17:25It's the savings plan at Central Savings.
- 2:17:27At CS&L, our 5.25% passbook accounts earn an effective rate of 5.47%.
- 2:17:35Commercial banks pay less so your money doesn't work as hard with them or grow as fast.
- 2:17:40Savings plans from Central Savings.
- 2:17:43The more you know about money, the better for us.
- 2:17:46Remember FSLIC, W-A-B-Y, 430-014 Albany, home of the New York Jets.
- 2:17:53It's first to 10 at the 42-yard line of the Buffalo Bills.
- 2:17:57A handoff to O.J. Simpson trying to swing wide.
- 2:17:59He makes a turn outside.
- 2:18:00He's driving downfield, cuts back inside.
- 2:18:02He's down to the 40-yard line of the Jets and finally pulled down to the 38-yard line of the New York Jets.
- 2:18:06Another fine run by O.J. Simpson.
- 2:18:08It looked as though he might break it all the way but he was headed to the sideline.
- 2:18:11Cuts back to the inside until he was pulled down by Hill Wise, Burgess Owens, and Dennis Howell.
- 2:18:15Down to the 38-yard line of the New York Jets.
- 2:18:18Let's see, 8 and 12.
- 2:18:2020 yards on the play.
- 2:18:21He has 176 yards on the day thus far.
- 2:18:24An unofficial goal.
- 2:18:25And almost one more of those 20-yard runs.
- 2:18:27We're giving that 2,000-yard mark and what an achievement.
- 2:18:29I like O.J. Simpson. I like his style.
- 2:18:31I believe he's signed on for the full season and not just 13 games.
- 2:18:35He's really playing a football game this afternoon.
- 2:18:37First to 10 at the 38 of the New York Jets.
- 2:18:39The head-up again to O.J.
- 2:18:40Drives up the middle, stops.
- 2:18:41No gain on the play at the 38-yard line.
- 2:18:43Good tackle made there by Bill Ferguson of the Jets, number 58.
- 2:18:47Well, there's a good deal about Ferguson, I think, in the seasons to come.
- 2:18:50He started slowly because of an injury and illness at the beginning of the year.
- 2:18:54And he came on strong to nail down that right linebacker spot for the Jets.
- 2:18:57And now we see Steve Thompson out there defensive right in and plays with John Elliott.
- 2:19:01Ed Gallagher, of course, is another bright spot at the Jets.
- 2:19:03He hasn't been playing much all year because he's been injured.
- 2:19:06See St. Ferguson, Atkinson, Gallagher, and all these injuries.
- 2:19:10He's been very, very soft with him this past year.
- 2:19:13You know, you put them all together and it ends up to a fourth season.
- 2:19:15It's second and 10 on the 38 of the New York Jets.
- 2:19:17The Buffalo Bills in possession of the ball.
- 2:19:19That pick-out goes to O.J.
- 2:19:20He's way too wide.
- 2:19:21Cuts down the sideline and has not got a bounce at the 40-yard line.
- 2:19:24At the 30-yard line, he picks up 8 yards more.
- 2:19:27Bill Wise makes the tackle.
- 2:19:29At the 30-yard line, if he picks up 8 yards on the play,
- 2:19:32it'll be 3rd and 2 at the 30 of the New York Jets.
- 2:19:35184 yards on the day thus far.
- 2:19:38Fantastic running of O.J. Simpson.
- 2:19:41And that field is really rugged out there.
- 2:19:43It's a fair-to-football field as I've stepped on.
- 2:19:45And I stepped on it at halftime.
- 2:19:47It was really slushy, wet, snowy.
- 2:19:49Just about everything a football field ought to be.
- 2:19:51And of course, O.J. Simpson, though, no matter what the field,
- 2:19:54he does it all the time.
- 2:19:55He swings the play inside, no hole.
- 2:19:57He swings it to the outside.
- 2:19:58If there's no hole outside, he'll cut it back, dodge it, dodge,
- 2:20:01and he makes some yards.
- 2:20:02He hadn't been hurt many times.
- 2:20:04This is today on the loss of yards, either.
- 2:20:06O.J. Simpson, 2 at the 30-yard line.
- 2:20:08Braxton takes it, goes up the middle,
- 2:20:09gets the first down, he gets 5 yards on the play.
- 2:20:11He needed 2.
- 2:20:12He picked up 5 down at the 25-yard line.
- 2:20:14His first and 10 at the 25.
- 2:20:16O.J. Simpson, unofficially with 184 yards.
- 2:20:20If he goes for 197 for the day,
- 2:20:22he will have reached 2,000 yards in one year.
- 2:20:25Nobody has ever approached that except the great Jimmy Brown,
- 2:20:28whose record already was beaten by O.J. today.
- 2:20:31Brown's old mark is 1,863.
- 2:20:34Close from in close, it can go.
- 2:20:36O.J. Simpson, his first and 10 at the 25.
- 2:20:38He has 184.
- 2:20:40He needs 13 yards more.
- 2:20:44They're calling for the juice.
- 2:20:45It has a pitch after the juice now.
- 2:20:46He runs off left tackle.
- 2:20:47Makes it trying to feel.
- 2:20:48Picked up 5 yards more down to the 20-yard line.
- 2:20:50These are unofficial totals I'm giving you now.
- 2:20:52I'm just wrapping them off as play develops here,
- 2:20:56and the official figures could be a yard or two difference,
- 2:20:59of course, in line.
- 2:21:00Hill-wise, makes a tackle after a 5-yard gain
- 2:21:02and second and 5 after 20-yard line of New York.
- 2:21:05And the lights are being turned on now.
- 2:21:08189 yards more.
- 2:21:10189 yards on the day.
- 2:21:138 yards more for O.J. Simpson.
- 2:21:15He's got 2,000.
- 2:21:16Well, Marty, I'll see.
- 2:21:17I'm going to have to leave the booth in a moment now
- 2:21:19to go down to the locker room,
- 2:21:20but I'd like to congratulate O.J. and, of course,
- 2:21:22the Buffalo BLC.
- 2:21:23And, of course, they thank again everybody involved,
- 2:21:25and it's been a great year for me.
- 2:21:27Second and 5 after 20-yard line.
- 2:21:29Forgive me, Larry, for getting back to the foregain.
- 2:21:31O.J. carries.
- 2:21:32He drives downfield, goes for 6, 7 yards.
- 2:21:34He may have 2,000 right now.
- 2:21:36Unofficially, our totals show that he's right about
- 2:21:39the 2,000-yard mark right now.
- 2:21:41He went from the 20-yard line then
- 2:21:44to the 14-yard line, 6 yards on the play.
- 2:21:48He's got over 2,000.
- 2:21:502,000 yards.
- 2:21:522,000 yards.
- 2:21:53He's got to take him out of that line of van
- 2:21:55that somebody else go in.
- 2:21:572,000 yards for O.J.
- 2:21:59Wow!
- 2:22:01We saw history, man.
- 2:22:03You don't want to come after him, Larry.
- 2:22:04He wasn't going to be in there.
- 2:22:05That's right.
- 2:22:06They're practically carrying him off the field.
- 2:22:08They're dragging him off the field.
- 2:22:10They're lifting him to their shoulders,
- 2:22:12and he's being carried off the field
- 2:22:14on the shoulders of his teammates.
- 2:22:16What a sight!
- 2:22:19The entire squad has run out on the field,
- 2:22:23and they've carried O.J. off the field on their shoulders.
- 2:22:27O.J. Simpson with more than 2,000 yards.
- 2:22:32Well, I'd like to sit and rant with you now
- 2:22:34about the difference between O.J.
- 2:22:35and Jimmy Brown Marty, but we don't have time,
- 2:22:37and I don't want to detract from the moment.
- 2:22:39O.J. has had the most tremendous year
- 2:22:41any running back has ever had in professional football.
- 2:22:44He certainly has that.
- 2:22:47He embraces Lou Saban, his coach, up on their sideline.
- 2:22:51There will be over 300 writers and broadcasters
- 2:22:55gathering around O.J. Simpson after the ballgame,
- 2:22:59one of the largest contingents in the history of sport.
- 2:23:01Larry Watkins goes in to play the running back,
- 2:23:03and everybody might as well go home from here
- 2:23:05because the rest is anticlimactic.
- 2:23:07It's first and 10 at the 14-yard line of the New York Jets.
- 2:23:13The handoff goes to Braxton trying to swing wide,
- 2:23:15cuts in off the tackle, and drives down to about the 10-yard line.
- 2:23:17It'll be second and sixth after 10.
- 2:23:20O.J. has 2,001 yards.
- 2:23:24No man in football history has ever done that in one season.
- 2:23:27And as Larry Grant so well put it, or put it so well,
- 2:23:34it's like having two 1,000-yard runners on the same ballclub.
- 2:23:38It's like having Larry Zocker and Mercury Morris together,
- 2:23:41or Brockington Lane together.
- 2:23:46Well, it's second and sixth after 10-yard line.
- 2:23:51Van Valkenburg is in its fullback now,
- 2:23:53replacing Braxton.
- 2:23:54Van Valkenburg is the upback,
- 2:23:56and Van Valkenburg carries, goes up to the middle,
- 2:23:58and drives for about four yards before he stops.
- 2:24:00It'll be third and about three at around the seven-eight-yard line.
- 2:24:04The yard stripes are obliterated by the snow.
- 2:24:07We're guessing at the...
- 2:24:08We can see the yard six of the near side.
- 2:24:10It looks like third and three at around the seven-yard line.
- 2:24:14Yes, the put of his third and three at about the seven-yard line.
- 2:24:17Driving towards the open end of Shea Stadium.
- 2:24:19As you know, Larry Grant has gone down to the New York Jets locker room.
- 2:24:22And now that he's gone, I can say all the nice things about him
- 2:24:24that I hate to say when he's sitting alongside.
- 2:24:27He's been great.
- 2:24:28I've learned so much football just sitting up here alongside of him.
- 2:24:32It's third and three at the seven-yard line of the New York Jets.
- 2:24:36Buffalo Bill still driving.
- 2:24:37They're leading the game 31-7.
- 2:24:39And the hand of course of Van Valkenburg,
- 2:24:41and he's watching, carrying rather, watching, goes up the middle.
- 2:24:44Larry, watch him.
- 2:24:52L, fourth down and about a yard.
- 2:24:54Fourth and one.
- 2:24:56And here goes the field goal.
- 2:24:57Taking the team out in the field once again.
- 2:24:59Different unit going out there.
- 2:25:03Don Leopold.
- 2:25:04L-E-Y-P-O-L-D-T.
- 2:25:06Leopold.
- 2:25:08Ready to kick it.
- 2:25:10Team goes to the line of scrimmage, which is the four-yard line.
- 2:25:12He'll kick it from 11 yards out.
- 2:25:14Angle is slightly to the right.
- 2:25:16Buffalo is now leading 31-7.
- 2:25:18There are three minutes and 22 seconds to go on the football game,
- 2:25:21and O.J. Simpson and the Buffalo Bills have had quite a day here at J.
- 2:25:25Ball is snapped, face down, and kicked by Leopold, and it's through there.
- 2:25:29There's a time out on the field to score.
- 2:25:31The Buffalo Bills, 34, and the New York Jets, seven.
- 2:25:36Pepperality.
- 2:25:43If it's 74 new car time for you, don't knock yourself out running around.
- 2:25:47Pepperality means low 74 pepper price.
- 2:25:50High pepper trade-in plus low pepper down payment.
- 2:25:53Pepperality, we can tell you, we can show you.
- 2:25:56But until you buy, you can't try Pepperality.
- 2:25:59Heads for the home of Pepperality.
- 2:26:01Head Pepper, Christ for Plymouth, with nine-lacent Pepperality.
- 2:26:07Hey, you can have a soulful wrap-in.
- 2:26:09This is my tuning in to your radio on Wavy 14, every Saturday night at 9,
- 2:26:12and every Sunday night at 10, because Brother Soul,
- 2:26:14Eddie has something that does his thing right here on Wavy 14.
- 2:26:18Remember, Brother Soul, Saturday nights at 9, and Sunday nights at 10,
- 2:26:22right here on Wavy 14.
- 2:26:25Wavy 14, Wavy 14, Wavy 14, bye.
- 2:26:32W-A-B-Y, Sports Radio 14 Albany, home of the New York Jets.
- 2:26:49Larry Grantson is down in the locker room now, the New York Jets locker room.
- 2:26:52This is Marty Glickman reporting.
- 2:26:55Three minutes and 11 seconds to go in this football game here at Shade.
- 2:26:57Buffalo is leading 34-7.
- 2:26:59Magnificent save for OJ Simpson and the Buffalo Bills.
- 2:27:02A low-bounding kick by Layfall that's picked up by Annamaly at the 15.
- 2:27:05He runs up to the 20-25 along the near side, cuts back to the middle of the field,
- 2:27:08breaks down to the clear with the home run to the 40, the 42,
- 2:27:11and he's down at the 42-yard line.
- 2:27:13A fine run back by Mike Annamaly, another one of those fine, gutsy players
- 2:27:17who plays every minute of every ball game, and he's in.
- 2:27:20And here comes Joe Namath on the field once again for the final minutes
- 2:27:23of the final game of the season.
- 2:27:25And also the final game in the long and marvelously successful career
- 2:27:30of Weave U-Bank.
- 2:27:32Weave is retiring.
- 2:27:33He'll still be with the New York Jets organization,
- 2:27:36but no longer the coach on the field.
- 2:27:38That's a 20-years as head coach after 46 years of coaching at all levels of the game.
- 2:27:44Double wing formation now, one deep back, Hank Bajaukwun.
- 2:27:47Signals being called by Joe Namath. Namath takes it and drops straight back.
- 2:27:50He sets up the pass, big rush, Todd runs out of left and he's down.
- 2:27:54Hits down again by number 71 of the Buffalo Bills,
- 2:27:58I'll say Mike Ketish rather than Walt Patelka, number 85.
- 2:28:02Mike Ketish, number 71, makes the tackle on the play
- 2:28:05and drops Namath back at the 33-yard line, a loss of 9 yards,
- 2:28:09makes the second of 19 at the 33.
- 2:28:12The Buffalo Bills have achieved all their marks and O.J. Simpson,
- 2:28:17all of his marks that they sought for except one, and that is a playoff spot.
- 2:28:23And that will depend upon the outcome of other games being played throughout the country today.
- 2:28:28They still might get in. It's an outside chance for the Bills.
- 2:28:32Second of 19 at the 33-yard line, double wing formation again for the Jets.
- 2:28:36Again, Bajaukwun is the only back.
- 2:28:38He goes back to pass, Namath does throws,
- 2:28:40Angley out to the left side, and it is incomplete, almost intercepted by Richard Lewis.
- 2:28:45Incomplete.
- 2:28:46David Knight was the intended receiver for the New York Jets.
- 2:28:49It's going to be third in 19, the ball is at the 33-yard line.
- 2:28:53Looks like time will call out on the field.
- 2:28:55Some idiotic fan has run out on the field, and there's Jondon.
- 2:28:59The controlman has down-collared the fan and is marching along to the sideline.
- 2:29:05As a matter of fact, fans have moved out on the field at the near side.
- 2:29:08They're still in the stands at the far side, but those few remaining in the stands,
- 2:29:12as it's beginning to rain fairly heavily now, out of combination of weather we've had today.
- 2:29:17Rain, sleet, and snow.
- 2:29:18And if you're driving, please, we don't have to admonish you to drive carefully and slowly,
- 2:29:24but just a reminder, it's a tough day.
- 2:29:28It's third and 19 at the 33-yard line.
- 2:29:31Two-fifty-five to go in the ball game, and Joe Namath keeps throwing.
- 2:29:34He drops straight back to pass, setting up.
- 2:29:36Throws way down, deep downfield.
- 2:29:38Caster makes the catch.
- 2:29:39He's got a first down at the 45-yard line, making the 40-yard line of the Buffalo Bills.
- 2:29:45How about that?
- 2:29:46On third and 19, Namath fires long and deep, and Mitch Caster makes the grab.
- 2:29:51Good for the first down at the 40-yard line of the Buffalo Bills.
- 2:29:55Ernie Kellerman made the tackle, going to the Buffalo Bills.
- 2:29:59Last gas, Heffett, by Namath and Caster, and the Jets still keep possession of that football.
- 2:30:05First and ten it is.
- 2:30:06Ball placed down just about the 40-yard line.
- 2:30:08The yard line is obliterated there, and we can't quite run him out to the near side
- 2:30:12because it's obliterated at the sideline as well.
- 2:30:15But his first is in at about the 40.
- 2:30:17Again, the double-wing formation.
- 2:30:19It's a flat right with a swift left end, and one deep back for Joplin.
- 2:30:22He carries with up the middle, no gain on the play, and he's thrown down.
- 2:30:25Makes his second and ten at the 40-yard line.
- 2:30:29We have the opportunity, too, to thank the men who have been so helpful to us
- 2:30:33during the course of this year's broadcasting.
- 2:30:35Our first with the New York Jets, the first, we hope, of many.
- 2:30:38And now we've reached the two-minute mark on the ballgame.
- 2:30:40More about that in a moment.
- 2:30:41There's a timeout on the field.
- 2:30:42The score, the Buffalo Bills, 34, the New York Jets, 7.
- 2:30:46You've always thought of Hagen as an economy car, right?
- 2:30:50Well, listen.
- 2:30:52The 74 Plymouth Justuars priced $87.15 below Volkswagen.
- 2:30:57That's right.
- 2:30:58Based on manufacturer's suggested retail price,
- 2:31:01including state and local taxes and destination charges,
- 2:31:04Justuars priced $87.15 lower than Volkswagen's people.
- 2:31:10Now, that's what you call economy.
- 2:31:12And although the lower price Justuars is small,
- 2:31:15it's a lot more car than Volkswagen.
- 2:31:18Justuars seats five instead of four,
- 2:31:20and offers three times the trunk space of Volkswagen.
- 2:31:23And Justuars has a wider track and longer wheelbase for greater stability.
- 2:31:28And of course, Justuars still offers all the things you buy a compact for.
- 2:31:32Easy parking and handling, good gas mileage on regular, and low upkeep.
- 2:31:37Plymouth Justuars, it's more car than Volkswagen for less money.
- 2:31:42Volkswagen, think again.
- 2:31:44For economy, think Justuars.
- 2:31:46See Justuars, or Plymouth, other great small cars.
- 2:31:49This is Marty Flickman with Larry Grampson.
- 2:31:51Larry already down in the Jets locker room.
- 2:31:53Just two minutes ago in this football season.
- 2:31:56The Buffalo Bills are winning this football game now by a score of 34 to 7.
- 2:32:00The Jets are threatening, however, second and 10 at the 40-yard line of the Buffalo Bills,
- 2:32:04if we can use the word threaten loosely here.
- 2:32:08As we started to say, we want to thank all the people who have been so helpful.
- 2:32:12Barbara Sheehan for her fine comments on the pregame shows.
- 2:32:16Jim McAleer, our producer of these broadcasts all season long.
- 2:32:19Executive producer of the fabulous Nat Ash.
- 2:32:22Our two spotters, Mal Kirkpatrick and Len Weiss.
- 2:32:25Our training staff at WOR.
- 2:32:27The jet management, particularly Frank Ramis, head of publicity for the New York Jets,
- 2:32:31and his assistant Jim Trecker.
- 2:32:33And mostly you Jets fans who have taken so kindly to our next giant broadcast.
- 2:32:38I thank you.
- 2:32:40WAVY, Music Radio 14, Albany.
- 2:32:43On the Buffalo Bills, double-wing formation, Joan Amos still calling signals right down the wire.
- 2:32:49Two minutes ago on the ballgame, he drops back to pass,
- 2:32:51throws Agner over left side, and is caught by David Knight outside, and he's tapped at the far side line,
- 2:32:56just short of the first down.
- 2:32:58He picks up nine yards down to about the 31-yard line of the Buffalo Bills,
- 2:33:02so it'll be second and one at the 31.
- 2:33:05Make that third and one at the 31 of the Buffalo Bills.
- 2:33:10The lights are turned on, they're shining brightly down on the field,
- 2:33:14which is partially covered with snow, only partially covered because
- 2:33:17between the hash marks is fairly heavily muddied, as well as the skin portion of the baseball diamond.
- 2:33:24Now it's third and one at the 31-yard line of the Buffalo Bills.
- 2:33:28Again, the double-wing formation, Namath calling signals.
- 2:33:31It's a flat right, flank it on the left side, and one deep back.
- 2:33:35Namath takes it, drops straight back, throws a quick square out to the right side,
- 2:33:39caught by Barkham, he's got the first down, he dances and dodges,
- 2:33:42and then he's run out of bounds at about the 25-yard line.
- 2:33:45Good for the first down, the clock has stopped with a minute and 47 seconds to go in the game.
- 2:33:49First and 10 at the 25 of the Buffalo Bills.
- 2:33:52The Jets are trailing in the ball game 34-7.
- 2:34:00Now the New York Jets are playing their 14th and final game of the year, their 20th overall.
- 2:34:06Their record is going to be four wins and nine losses.
- 2:34:10Four wins and ten losses to give me, four and ten.
- 2:34:13And it will be nine and five for the Buffalo Bills as the Bills are leading 34-7.
- 2:34:18Again, the double-wing formation, and again Namath drops straight back,
- 2:34:21throws over the middle, and it's caught by David Knight.
- 2:34:23He's down immediately at about the eight-yard line.
- 2:34:28They place it down at about the nine-yard line, so it'll be first and goal to go at the nine.
- 2:34:33David Knight making that grab, cutting over the middle from the flank left-end position,
- 2:34:39and he cut over the middle and made that catch.
- 2:34:42Good point, another first down, and it's first and goal to go at the nine.
- 2:34:46And Joe Namath still keeps pitching when the minute meant 16 seconds to go in this game.
- 2:34:52He's threatening the score for the Jets as the Jets trail 34-7.
- 2:34:57Namath under the center in the double-wing once again, but Jocelyn, the only deep back,
- 2:35:01Namath back to pass being rushed hard and down.
- 2:35:03A blitz on the plate, John Scullifant, the left linebacker, came smashing in.
- 2:35:07He's the rookie from Penn State and through for a loss.
- 2:35:11Back to the 15-yard line, makes that the 16-yard line, a seven-yard loss.
- 2:35:16Second and goal to go at the 16-yard line, and the clock is running,
- 2:35:20showing 58 seconds to go, and it's running.
- 2:35:22And it's also raining.
- 2:35:26Almost an eerie sight now, very heavy gray sky overhead,
- 2:35:30and brilliant lights ringing Shea Stadium, rain coming down on a snow-covered field,
- 2:35:36and many of the fans are now ringing the playing field out of the stands and along the sidelines.
- 2:35:43Second and goal to go at the 16, Namath calls signals, dumps straight back.
- 2:35:46Look downfield, throws Anger on the left side, and it's caught by Rich Caster.
- 2:35:50Caster goes in for a touchdown, touchdown, and Joe Namath, in what could be his last pass,
- 2:35:55as the Jets, judging by all those rumors, throws a touchdown pass to Rich Caster,
- 2:36:01and a lot of the fans go running out to help Caster to his feet on the,
- 2:36:04try to grab that football. I'm not sure which. They're wrestling for the football now.
- 2:36:10And the New York Jets are trailing now 34 to 13.
- 2:36:15And nobody seems to mind on either ball club.
- 2:36:19They're wrestling for the football. Now the police, the special police here at Shea Stadium,
- 2:36:24have separated the fans from the football.
- 2:36:30Caster, rather, made the grab in the end zone for the touchdown.
- 2:36:36Here's the point after 10 coming up right now. The score is 34 to 13.
- 2:36:40Signals being called.
- 2:36:42Ball is snapped, placed down, and booted, and it's through there.
- 2:36:45And I don't think that the special police was able to get that football back.
- 2:36:49It was kicked into the stands, and it's gone.
- 2:36:53As a timeout on the field, the score, Buffalo 34, the New York Jets 14.
- 2:36:59This is Bob Badger, manager of your radio station.
- 2:37:02The energy crisis is with us for sure, and media of all types are urging all of us to conserve energy.
- 2:37:07As media, we have responsibility to not only talk about energy conservation,
- 2:37:11but to participate as best we can ourselves while still fulfilling our public service commitments.
- 2:37:16WAVY has taken the following steps to conserve energy here at the station.
- 2:37:20WAVY has discontinued broadcasting between 1 and 5.30 a.m., except on Friday and Sunday nights.
- 2:37:27The WAVY mobile unit has been scheduled for fewer hours on area highways, searching out news.
- 2:37:33We feel we can be fully as effective utilizing the telephone.
- 2:37:36The WAVY transmitter adequately covers capital land, utilizing only 1,000 watts of power.
- 2:37:42And we will keep at that level or less.
- 2:37:44Some of our competitors utilize 50 times more energy to provide basically the same service.
- 2:37:50And WAVY has stepped up its program of converting from high-energy-consuming vacuum tube type equipment
- 2:37:56to low-grain solid state equipment as supplied by our parent firm, the CCA Electronics Corporation.
- 2:38:02WAVY can say with pride that we consume less energy by far than any other Albany radio station.
- 2:38:09Thank you for your interest.
- 2:38:11The record is going to be four and ten.
- 2:38:13The final game will weave you back.
- 2:38:16Bobby House feel ready to kick off, and the Buffalo Bill will expect an onside kick.
- 2:38:21They have nine men just short of the restraining line, which is a 50-yard line, and two deep men around about the 20-yard line.
- 2:38:30The jets are trailing 34 to 14.
- 2:38:33Here's the final kickoff of the year at all likelihood.
- 2:38:35Onside kick attempt it is, and it's caught by one of the big Buffalo Bill followers, and he's held up right there.
- 2:38:41And now he stops. It's a big pullback, number 36 down the play.
- 2:38:46And it's, let's see...
- 2:38:49Van Valkenburg.
- 2:38:51Van Valkenburg it is. Van Valkenburg, the big pullback.
- 2:38:53And the clock shows 22 seconds to go.
- 2:38:57Just time for one more play, and that's all that's necessary.
- 2:39:00It's first and ten.
- 2:39:02The ball is at the 48-yard line of the Buffalo Bills.
- 2:39:05And just to recap in case you missed it, O.J. Simpson achieved all the marks he set out to do today,
- 2:39:11and so did the Buffalo Bills' rushing attack.
- 2:39:13The only thing that remains to be seen based upon the outcome of the ballgames is whether or not Buffalo will be in the playoffs.
- 2:39:1822 seconds to go in the game, a tight wing deformation.
- 2:39:21Joe Ferguson, the repeat quarterback, calling signals.
- 2:39:25Offside, no snap. Contact is made. The ball is still not snapped.
- 2:39:28Fentanyl markers fly all over the field.
- 2:39:30And a punch is thrown down there.
- 2:39:33Looks like Dave Foley, the ex-Jetter, threw one.
- 2:39:36But at any rate, they're separated, and nothing serious comes of it.
- 2:39:42Let's see the call is offside, called against the Buffalo Bills.
- 2:39:45Well, it'll be first and 15 at the 43-yard line, but it doesn't matter now.
- 2:39:49The score is 34 to 14.
- 2:39:51The clock still shows 22 seconds to go in the game.
- 2:39:54Larry Grampson will be in the locker room with the New York Jets to say so long to the Jetball players.
- 2:39:58Hopefully we can get Weeb Eubank on, but Weeb may be too filled with emotion to go on.
- 2:40:03He was before the ballgames when Larry was down there.
- 2:40:07Too bad he's got to lose this one and have a losing season as well, but there's so much to be said for Mr. Weeb Eubank.
- 2:40:12Outstanding individual as well as a great coach.
- 2:40:15Here's the play, and quarterback Ferguson just falls down with the ball, and the clock is running.
- 2:40:21There's no timeout called by anybody.
- 2:40:23It's down to 13 seconds, and the clock is running.
- 2:40:26And now the Jets and the Buffalo Bills are talking to each other, just standing around.
- 2:40:30And the seconds are being kicked off on the season.
- 2:40:33The crowd goes running on the field.
- 2:40:35Two seconds, one, and that is it.
- 2:40:38That's the end of the ballgame.
- 2:40:40And the score, the Buffalo Bills, 34, the New York Jets, 14.
