- 0:01Welcome back to hamster with a blunt.
- 0:03Penknife the Doctor Who non commentary podcast, which we're
- 0:08calling an extra slice. Oh, that's a good.
- 0:11Thank you. I'm Joe.
- 0:14And I'm here today with my special guest star star of to
- 0:18watch who mr. Mark Rollins.
- 0:21Hello, hello. You've done a few of these now
- 0:23Avenue. Yes, you have.
- 0:25And perhaps I'm asking everybody to do this but you could occur
- 0:30Explain the premise of this. Members-only bonus, podcasts
- 0:35that we're doing so off. You go explain the premise?
- 0:39Yeah, well we're talking about other television shows aren't
- 0:43we? That's right.
- 0:44Why do you look so scared? Well?
- 0:45Now, because something is right? Yeah, well that it was gonna be
- 0:56like folks so it's bring it in. Established hamster contributors
- 1:02and asking them to choose a television show and bear in
- 1:06mind, this is can be from any television show for our history.
- 1:10So what they choose to is very personal to them, I would like
- 1:13to make that very clear before we go into the episode we're
- 1:16ads. Do now any TV show?
- 1:19It could have been and we talked about the show is on overview
- 1:24and then we'd select five or six different episodes and we'll do
- 1:28commentaries on those. So it gives you a good Overview
- 1:30of the series and then a good example of episodes from it.
- 1:34So mark Why don't you tell everybody the show that you
- 1:39chosen? Well I have chosen the
- 1:42Australian soap. Opera Neighbours.
- 1:46The wackiest choice of my advice first head that I'm doing of
- 1:50this straight. Can I ask you a question?
- 1:53Yep. When you could have chosen any
- 1:56show why neighbors. It's do.
- 2:02It it's got quite a parallel. If there is a some kind of Then
- 2:07diagram out there of Doctor Who fans and neighbors fans, you
- 2:09know. Okay.
- 2:10What's a Venn diagram? It sounds very intelligent
- 2:21anyway. It doesn't matter what that is.
- 2:22Okay but you - I said they are very similar type very smart.
- 2:26They're that's radical way to your argument.
- 2:29So yes, it's it's really difficult to explain but the
- 2:35reasons I like Kitt is it's it has that similar.
- 2:40Like I'm not a fan of like other soaps or anything like that.
- 2:45Do you get any unless you get people to watch all other
- 2:46things? I don't watch by like continuing
- 2:49TV drama series. Okay.
- 2:50And I think as a doctor you fan you have that kind of Mind of
- 2:54I've been interested in television production and
- 2:57history. I think generally that is
- 3:00something that always saddle fans of television programs,
- 3:03enjoy and Neighbors Is a very long running continuing drama
- 3:10series a bit like talk to who you have different theme Tunes
- 3:15title sequences different cast coming back, different sort of
- 3:19Errors of producers. It does have that similar
- 3:23history? I still, what attracts me?
- 3:26I mean I can go into it when I sort of watched as a child.
- 3:28I think everybody maybe in the UK has watched a bit of
- 3:30Neighbors at some point because it's such a big thing, I
- 3:33definitely did. I think his reputation is very
- 3:36different to what it Actually is, but I think that it's that
- 3:41history and looking back and there's a bit of a fandom around
- 3:44it as well that I've sort of been involved with as well.
- 3:47So it's very it does have those parallels and I think there are
- 3:51a lot of people on Twitter. There is that sort of neighbors
- 3:54found group, but they're also there is a sort of a Doctor Who
- 3:55and neighbors cross over there. I see a lot of people is do
- 3:59enjoy that and it's different to like British soaps.
- 4:02I've no, I don't really what, I've never really watched like
- 4:04carnations here or anything like that.
- 4:05I know their long-running as well.
- 4:07And there's fans in that way, but there's something about the
- 4:10sort of the production of it in the history of it.
- 4:12I also enjoy as well as just watching it for some, great
- 4:15drama and great television. You well quiet.
- 4:18Yeah. And I think some like people
- 4:22find neighbors it quite easy to Mark, I think.
- 4:24But yes, because it's like a piece of a frame rates on early
- 4:27in the evening, in the production value.
- 4:30Even though I think the potential value got better and
- 4:31best that, you know, it's essentially a wobbly wool soap,
- 4:34isn't it? Essentially?
- 4:36Yes. Yes, I know later on it was on
- 4:38film and they made it look very filmic, but initially, it was, I
- 4:41think this perception a bit like Doctor Who wobbly sets in the
- 4:4560s getting parallel. And if you know the height of
- 4:50when he was on like, maybe Tom Baker or even like Dalek Mania,
- 4:54when everyone's like, oh everyone's probably watched an
- 4:56episode of Doctor Who at some point at that time in the UK and
- 4:59it's known for those sort of very few things.
- 5:04I think, obviously doctor he's changed a little bit with a new
- 5:06series, but Neighbors. I think has stayed in that 80s,
- 5:10Maj Harold Kylie Minogue bubble and like when it was axed and it
- 5:16was all the new sites everywhere and the BBC News did, they
- 5:19always show bouncers wedding, which is a dog sweating, which
- 5:24is a female dog and a, but, yeah, and it's just like, one
- 5:29minute in the agent. I think that sums up.
- 5:31How people look back on it, fondly, with Nostalgia.
- 5:34Whereas, if maybe in the 90s, when, I'm talking about Doctor
- 5:37Who they would show some terrible moment of like I do.
- 5:41Martin clunes from snake. Yeah, yeah, exactly like that.
- 5:44So, it's like that were actually, we know, as Doctor Who
- 5:47fans were actually, the show has so many more different levels
- 5:51and so much more into it. So, does Neighbors.
- 5:53I feel and I think the, the scriptwriter towards the last
- 5:57few years of when it was on currently it started looking
- 6:01back, it has passed a bit like Doctor Who referencing things
- 6:04from the heart bringing things back acknowledging.
- 6:06Its Strain its Nostalgia, but also creating some great drama
- 6:10looking forward. And the product as you say, the
- 6:12production values got so much better.
- 6:14It was a great, great drama. I think better than some British
- 6:17TV because I watched soldiers in 90s.
- 6:20Yes. Yeah.
- 6:21It was still a bit of a wobbly wall.
- 6:23So they're not, you know, they'd be having are currently slam a
- 6:26door. Yeah.
- 6:26And you the Dogwood and then I didn't watch it for years and
- 6:30years and years and years and years until I met you.
- 6:32And then I started watching neighbors, like 20 years later.
- 6:36Oh God, what's this? Going to be like a long
- 6:39lingering soap that's gone on forever and you put that episode
- 6:43and also that was all done on film.
- 6:45They want to location the whole episode.
- 6:47You know, they've got this massive Vineyard that they're
- 6:50going to like, these are absolutely beautiful location.
- 6:52I'm like, okay, so they're actually pouring some proper
- 6:55money into it by the end. Maybe my led to it being
- 6:58canceled, you know, maybe they're spending a bit too much.
- 7:01Well, I think it was the longest running continuing drama in
- 7:03Australia, at least and it's got I think Australia should be very
- 7:06proud. Out of it, as easy as a Heritage
- 7:08piece, I'm surprised no one in Australia plumped to to fund
- 7:12that, but I don't see anybody watches.
- 7:14It's the equivalent of you know talk to in 1989 probably over
- 7:18over there commercially you know you said about the fandoms
- 7:21right? Yeah.
- 7:22And the different periods? Yeah they're like well we'll say
- 7:24oh the great William Muir is my favorite, is there a bit of that
- 7:27we're neighbors like you know older the so-and-so producer of
- 7:30the 90s? Yeah.
- 7:31I mean, I we all have our different like the different
- 7:34sort of doctors so I've not I've not watched neighbors all the
- 7:36way. Through, I've I started I did a
- 7:38bit in the 90s sort of to mid-2000s, then I picked up
- 7:41again, talk 2016 onwards. So I've got sort of missing
- 7:45years, we all have Missing Years but talking to doctor, you don't
- 7:49know, for Doctor Who, but for Neighbors.
- 7:51Okay, so yeah, there's a sort of me, it sort of early 2000's,
- 7:56there was a producer that made a lot came in made a lot of
- 7:59changes that the fans really hated and she got rid of a lot
- 8:02of old characters and made the big check.
- 8:04So talking to fans, ya there, So now juices Susan Bower citizen
- 8:09power. We're coming for you Susan.
- 8:11Yeah, so I don't think she'll end up.
- 8:13She decided to make it like you want to use it added a sort of
- 8:16Youth element to it. If you want a bit more of a
- 8:18teenager's 90210, Yang got rid of a lot of older characters and
- 8:23made it. Yeah, so yeah, there are
- 8:26different sort of Time Times within the, in the show.
- 8:29And I think people again like dr.
- 8:31Who have different sort of it errors errors.
- 8:34Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:35Race is. Yeah.
- 8:36That they like, so it's really good fun.
- 8:39Just to look back in history and yeah, like I said, the different
- 8:41title sequences and the different theme tunes of what
- 8:44they do, but it's always neighbors but it's just great to
- 8:48look back or somebody that's dipped into neighbors.
- 8:52Yeah, but has an experience of much as you have such as people
- 8:56listen to this episode, possibly are there distinct eras that you
- 9:01could sort of quantify like, yeah, like the 80s, the 90s, the
- 9:052000, I would break. Up in those decades.
- 9:07So what? Yeah, so the 80s is where it
- 9:09began and it was sort of like, you know, the ramseys.
- 9:14And it was Scott and Charles it was very much in Harold.
- 9:17I think a very smaller Ensemble, it just focused on these few
- 9:21families and it and those early ones because they're out on DVD,
- 9:25they're all on YouTube and Dailymotion and stuff and out
- 9:28there. They're quite sort of
- 9:32hard-hitting. Though, they don't treat the
- 9:33women very well in. I know they sort of it is The
- 9:3680s there, but the way that they talk to each other and some of
- 9:40the story lines are quite gritty.
- 9:43I've got a says it starts. It's quite kitchen sink drama
- 9:46when it starts off, but I what I like about neighbors is you have
- 9:49those moments, but you have the comedy storylines and you can
- 9:52have the serious style episode. Yeah, you've got something
- 9:56something quite dramatic happening and something
- 9:58absolutely absurd. And there's someone who sort of
- 10:00a different age to identify with in all the different as it goes
- 10:03on. So go so occasionally the
- 10:06Erratic things are the common defects.
- 10:09Well, such as Therese hanging off the roof or Julie Martin's
- 10:13death at the murder mystery party.
- 10:14I think it. No.
- 10:15But then towards the end, it also knew how to lean in and it
- 10:19knew it was being ridiculous, but actually can get away with
- 10:22it because actually, the activities is really good
- 10:25throughout, I think, I think it's pretty strong, but to sum
- 10:29up what I think, generally, people say, and if you think,
- 10:32you know, listen to a thing about neighbors.
- 10:34So for instance, I think the acting is really Great recently.
- 10:37I was watching and I first started watching again.
- 10:40There was this big storyline. It was very dramatic.
- 10:43And Sarah came round. Yeah.
- 10:46And I Sarah marks co-host from to watch her and I know she's
- 10:50never watched neighbors. And I always told her about, all
- 10:51my God, this is happening in Neighbors, this is happening in
- 10:53neighbors and I said, oh, I'm just watching neighbors and she
- 10:57looked at 1 second went. Oh my God, this is terrible.
- 11:00Terrible act and this is awful and she's not even sat and
- 11:03watched like one word of it. It's just you assume.
- 11:06Neighbors, it's an Australian soap opera.
- 11:08It's like, therefore, it's gonna be holding a terrible.
- 11:14This is all terrible. And literally, like you've
- 11:17literally, just looked at the TV screen when it's on.
- 11:18You haven't even seen anything. As you know, what surprised me
- 11:21was when, when you re introduced me to it and the first episode I
- 11:25watch, it was about a polyamorous relationship.
- 11:28Yeah. And these two gay guys, that had
- 11:31a kid with this woman who's James daughter and there was all
- 11:34this sort of very innovative, It kind of woke stuff going on and
- 11:38I remember watching it and I'm going.
- 11:40This is a bit much as it's all the bit greasy PC.
- 11:43And then only took me about two or three episodes of watching
- 11:46where I was like it quite as hooked into me again really
- 11:50quickly. So, I think I don't like if
- 11:51you're just seeing a snapshot of it.
- 11:52Yeah. Oh God.
- 11:54And it's difficult to introduce someone to a soap.
- 11:57Like what? Clear if your episodes?
- 11:59Yeah. But I think you can get into it,
- 12:00but I think you need to. It's more of a stamina than just
- 12:02a watch, this TV series, watch this finite.
- 12:07Beginning an end, but I think you can gather b, or you
- 12:12chimichanga episode. How the hell could you watch
- 12:14Neighbors from beginning? How many episodes are there are
- 12:18over 8,000 take you off your life.
- 12:21You don't need to watch it or you can dip in and out.
- 12:23I think I think you could probably watch a certain here.
- 12:26There are about support, all of the episodes.
- 12:29Think they're honest with streaming channel will be
- 12:31Upstream. So I think hopefully they'll be
- 12:32a Resurgence in interest. What has been great about
- 12:35recently and what is great? Great about when you're a
- 12:37regular Watcher is to see those arcs over a long period of time.
- 12:41That's what you get with soap rather than your just genuine
- 12:44series of drum. You can see things, how things
- 12:47develop sometimes though, we different writers coming in and
- 12:50out, someone will forget something or someone else I know
- 12:53is that a little bit? But what's the name of that
- 12:55character that I thought had, like, evil PTSD and they all
- 12:59thought she had? Like she had no emotions the
- 13:02blond character, the one who went off to London.
- 13:05Oh yeah, halo-halo. I thought that she was turning
- 13:08into a psychopath and evil and they went down this route.
- 13:11So God look at her. She's disassociation from all
- 13:14emotion. And then the next week it was
- 13:16like, oh no, I'm back, I'm back to normal.
- 13:18I was like, well, yes, sometimes you gotta forgive it in that way
- 13:20because he's continuing. And in terms of the production.
- 13:23So you've got to admire it, they're making six separate,
- 13:25they are filming six episodes a week to go ahead and create that
- 13:28is two hours so that an arc hours of Television a week
- 13:33continuing right round. But they were just like you
- 13:36read. Like in rooms a couple of the
- 13:38episodes. Also later on there was a fire
- 13:41in the school. I mean they did a bloody tornado
- 13:44or something hitting. Yeah.
- 13:46And the a tree fell down on the bar and murdered somebody.
- 13:49But yeah but it's nice. Just to watch.
- 13:51You get those big track storylines but then you also
- 13:53have those smaller just looking looking at the community the fun
- 13:57it's a world just to look into that world for 25 minutes and
- 14:00just see what's happening and you could just switch off and
- 14:03it's great escapism was well you know, absolutely.
- 14:06Recognizing over the fact that it's gone the way you just send
- 14:09it back. It's coming back now, isn't it?
- 14:10So it's fine will happen just like dr.
- 14:13Who it was axed. And then it came back, you know,
- 14:16it's a comeback. Two months later, a massive
- 14:19finale. I know what okay, to sort of go.
- 14:24Okay, let's let's take this a decade at a time.
- 14:26Hmm. Very quickly and talk about some
- 14:28of your favorite characters because I think if you look at
- 14:31the 80s that's where probably the most famous characters.
- 14:36Come from that's when that's neighbors.
- 14:39Is Dalek Mania? Isn't it officially a wedding?
- 14:42It's, that's its peak. Who would it be?
- 14:45Who are the biggies our Point? Well, you don't get Madge until
- 14:50sort of a year or so in. So, it was axed after a couple
- 14:54of months or begin with an external and went to another
- 14:57Channel, picked it up so he could have only lasted and that,
- 14:59that, those early, early years are a bit ropey, some of the,
- 15:03some of the characters went over, but not all of, and they
- 15:05recast a few people. But you obviously got your young
- 15:10group of like school kids. So you who you have Scott, and
- 15:13Charlene, and my bike lay, my God.
- 15:17I was such a revelation because a, she capable gist of his
- 15:21coming back for the finale. He's a really great actor and I
- 15:24didn't really, so I guess he didn't watch these ones at the
- 15:27time, I got up on DVD and watch them back, but I think Mike is a
- 15:29great. I think better than Scott.
- 15:31I think he's probably the best actor and I'm not surprised he
- 15:35went on to do move. He's like the Mentos and
- 15:37Priscilla, things like that. And you have Daphne and Des,
- 15:40which were a great couple around that time.
- 15:42He was definitely is when I do. She was a lesbian but I haircut
- 15:45but it's all the 80s, isn't it? Some of the Fashions, oh my God.
- 15:48Can I just say, you just mentioned Desmond?
- 15:51The few episodes we've been watching from that period of
- 15:53Desmond's mother, achievable, my name is, we'll just clean.
- 15:58Is my lady o. My no Desmond.
- 16:01She's not good for your dad's mom.
- 16:03And she is so over the top. If that was a character,
- 16:05neighbors, that would be me. But really in the 80s.
- 16:08You, you've got the Robinson family, which is Helen and Jim,
- 16:12and Julie, I learned Daniels, you know, Helen, damn knew,
- 16:15absolutely that she is as another William Hartnell of
- 16:18neighbors. If I'm a good doctor and she
- 16:28went right through up until 1997, just before she died in
- 16:31real life really, she went right through, she does she left?
- 16:34Because she was ill and had he died.
- 16:35Yeah. Otherwise so I think she would
- 16:37have just carried on so and then you've got the say the robin.
- 16:42Sorry. The ramseys with Madge coming
- 16:44in. So it's really about those two
- 16:47families. They're the main focus of the
- 16:4980s and then you get other as it goes on top of the mountain
- 16:52became independent. So you've got magic and then her
- 16:55two daughters feet, Charlene, her daughter and Henry her son.
- 16:59She match was the sister of Max Ramsey, so it was originally in
- 17:05that house. The first episode was Max,
- 17:08Maria. Danny and Shane they were
- 17:10Ramses, didn't he? And then Max.
- 17:12Yeah. And then this is what happens in
- 17:13the, so something happens behind the scenes, and they just have
- 17:15to swap out a character disappears.
- 17:18No explanation. You know what?
- 17:26My favorite from the 80s. Mrs. Mangle and then you've got
- 17:30people like mrs. Angela, Howard comes in a bit
- 17:32later on. I will have this Cafe shut down.
- 17:36Down. And I'm calling the police
- 17:38immediately. Yeah.
- 17:39And so, these are these characters that are what's mrs.
- 17:41Mangled, equivalent, uttered, a word all excited.
- 17:51But that's the 80s. And then, as we go to the night,
- 17:54I think the 90s Pete again. Yeah, I think because I feel
- 17:57like everybody, no, that's not ours, watch it.
- 17:59And it was down a little bit. And then then when the well, who
- 18:03do we have? We still have Hannah Martin the
- 18:06Marty So Judy - that character gets recast and comes back.
- 18:09This was my period got going on, Lucy Robinson in there, Debbie
- 18:14marting, Hannah Martin. Yeah.
- 18:17Lance Amy all y'all, then it's just expensive.
- 18:22Billy the Kennedys. Oh, my basically Billy Libby,
- 18:24Susan and Karl come in in the mid 90s.
- 18:27And that's I think when it goes back up again, and that's when I
- 18:29first started watching, you know, my first memory, you know
- 18:31who the Kennedys are, don't you mrs.
- 18:35Kennedy was named Susan. Yeah.
- 18:36Sarah Jane Smith. She used to say she thinks she
- 18:38never went away and she, she's lovely.
- 18:41Yeah, I my first memory when I started watching it was Libby
- 18:47was a big character of mine, always been a favorite of mine
- 18:50and I remember I think Darren Stark was going away or
- 18:53something and he got on a bus and she cried and I remember
- 18:56being really upset and crying. That was my first memory of
- 18:59mechanic call during that period, with those sort of
- 19:01longish hair. I will.
- 19:02And Drew, that's a bit later on. As we're getting towards the
- 19:042000, take his top off a lot though.
- 19:06Mm, I see. And that's when I started was
- 19:08here forever. Yeah, baby.
- 19:11So I probably started like 97. Is that when Jones and Joel came
- 19:15in and the Kennedys? Yeah, the Kennedys were a big
- 19:18factor of the 90s and then the big story line there, I suppose
- 19:22if you looking at Big storyline. So Scott and Charlene's wedding
- 19:24in the 80s, massive Carl and Sarah affair would be the big
- 19:29story of the 90s so it was huge. I feel like that was it s Peak
- 19:33and I said well that's the so yeah we're here.
- 19:36Found out and slapped around the face.
- 19:38I've seen that clip shown so many times.
- 19:40Actual, she says don't, I think that was an X.
- 19:47That's the 90s that sort of 98 going into 99 and then an early
- 19:512000s Peak I feel like what's the weather forecast?
- 19:54Well, the scully's came in of scully's were a great family for
- 19:57me, because I watch them moving in.
- 19:59Literally, the Martins drove down the street, and then, the
- 20:02scully's, drove up, the street and came in.
- 20:04And then you got the three sisters flick Michelle Steph
- 20:08with Lynn and Joe Scully and they aren't really the last of
- 20:12his mom and all that, then didn't you?
- 20:13It was that like it was a big sort of change over there so you
- 20:15sort of have the candies and the scully's with a main as going
- 20:18into the early 2000s, you know what?
- 20:20I can't watch those Cuddy upstairs now, though, because I
- 20:22know that Mar and Par Scully, what are their names?
- 20:26Lynn Lynn and Joe, yeah, they hate each other.
- 20:29You know, not the begin with. They want to begin Drive,
- 20:31someone to Absolute depression later on in real life, but then
- 20:35they had a court case to get it. I know there's always this is
- 20:38interesting as well, being interesting, neighbors, no one's
- 20:41ever done a sort of behind the scenes.
- 20:43But none of those actors article on scenes, all there's one on
- 20:46that shelf. There's one which is a bit
- 20:49questionable but nobody's ever done there, you know like dr.
- 20:52Who everyone's got a bouquet? I think that someone like
- 20:55magical Harold would. There's always a tell-all, no
- 20:58one's done, a sort of behind the scenes, it's always been, what's
- 21:01been going on behind, you know? No one, you know, what's the
- 21:03name? You plays, Susan?
- 21:05I don't know. Yeah, she officials.
- 21:07Don't want somebody left the show.
- 21:09No one's really talking about that book on the shelf that so
- 21:12there is a book. So I'm the leader that place the
- 21:15played Sarah this is the one laughing a fire.
- 21:18We have our Nikolai Charles, she wrote a book self-published very
- 21:22questionable. Saying that all these things
- 21:23went on Behavior was a bit Casting Couch.
- 21:25When she got there people are very horrible to her taking
- 21:27drugs blah blah blah blah blah. This is the stretchy one.
- 21:30Yes she's not great on Twitter. She's a big Trump supporter and
- 21:34it's all very Pro. So a lot of fans like her and
- 21:38like block her as well. He's saying I have The fans
- 21:46don't like her because she wedged her way in between Susan
- 21:49and Karl. Who were like she cares?
- 21:51She's coming back twice though. She did come back twice, they
- 21:54rewrote the story. Like I'm looking right at the
- 21:56end know, towards the end. They rewrote the story line to
- 22:00say that Carl actually slept with us.
- 22:01So he and another. So they had a son together.
- 22:03So the Sun comes back to someone else as well.
- 22:07Yes, yeah. Is he and then 2000s.
- 22:09That's the other big story line then.
- 22:11Is he and Carl? They because I think Is that
- 22:13success? They did it again they do it
- 22:15again so it's like so easy in college like the Dalek invasion
- 22:18of Earth following after the dollar has been such a success.
- 22:23Let's do this again but big toothbrush.
- 22:26A bit gugu is he she's a classic character.
- 22:30I think she's what they call the Heritage character now.
- 22:33So she actually back right there.
- 22:34The end was shaking. Like she came back.
- 22:36She came back a couple of years ago and tried to steal Carl's
- 22:41sperm and impregnate herself. In the last period.
- 22:45I think she was sleeping with their son in the very last
- 22:48episode. Yes.
- 22:49Back. Because I think it's again, it's
- 22:50a greatest hits. Like, what else could we do?
- 22:52It's, you know for the fans, they really looking back.
- 22:54It was a sequence. I think I started watching these
- 22:57Random clips of of laborers on YouTube.
- 23:01I think just to impress your little bit so far.
- 23:03You think I'd have a better knowledge and there was
- 23:06wonderful clip between Susan and this is he she went out in the
- 23:09streets and she's like you are pathetic.
- 23:12Is he And now you will never degrade my household again and
- 23:16she walked away with her head high.
- 23:18Honestly, that Jackie woodburne pissed off because she's always
- 23:22so light and amiable throughout most of the show, I'll tell you
- 23:25what, when she gets a come on, I think she might be the best
- 23:27actress and I'll show, you know, you probably and isn't she?
- 23:30Yeah, she's really great and they that I think they all are,
- 23:33it's a great point. Because I think again name is
- 23:36also famous for just sort of casting people on looks a lot of
- 23:40the time, rather than talent and I think that they We get angle,
- 23:44they get, you know, for the younger crowd, they would employ
- 23:48models and then give them acting lessons behind the scenes.
- 23:51Hollywood among people are that. Well, they do auditions, he's
- 23:56flick Scully, I beg your pardon, so, but I think at some other
- 24:02people have been discovered just on their looks and then I will,
- 24:04can you act? And then they learn acting.
- 24:06And a lot of people had never acted before, but it's a great
- 24:09training ground. This was what was talked about
- 24:12when neighbors was been asked This is where a lot of directors
- 24:15or, you know, casting people. They added like a director's
- 24:18course, where you would let a new word, direct neighbors.
- 24:21And it's a great pool of talent for Australian television said,
- 24:24when the show was axed, he said, this is a travesty because this
- 24:28show has been basically like the apprenticeship for so many
- 24:32people in Australian television actors, directors writers.
- 24:37Like they've all learned their chop through neighbors and it is
- 24:39a really good way of starting out.
- 24:42Yeah, you know and I think what you've Get there as well.
- 24:44Is you get great TV? Because I think when you're
- 24:47starting out and the beers, you take risks, you know, so you get
- 24:51big story lines. Okay.
- 24:52So we've got the, the scully's and the Kennedys.
- 24:56Yeah. And that's going to sort of
- 24:58thousands. And then this is where I stopped
- 25:00watching soft. Yeah, me too.
- 25:03This is where Paul Robinson, came back to New Orleans with
- 25:07Izzy whedon's, wieland's family. And then I and this is where I
- 25:16mean, it went off a little bit. I think because what Susan ended
- 25:19up being the local newspaper, editor for a while, okay, Livi
- 25:22left, the coffee shop came like Harold store.
- 25:26Lou and Harold ran the shop the store together.
- 25:28They blew up Lassiter's and rebuilt it.
- 25:31And pull was this big super villain that came in and he
- 25:35started taking up, something sort of the pool, sort of time,
- 25:39Harold's family came in and then everyone died in a plane crash.
- 25:42Obviously they got Rid of half the cast and a big plane crash
- 25:45really likes. A lot of people all of Howard's
- 25:47family died because he was living with his son
- 25:52daughter-in-law and Was like a motorcycle granddaughter who got
- 25:57killed off. He will just.
- 25:59When, is that during this woman? I hear it, man.
- 26:02Well towards that. And then I started watching
- 26:06again, sort of 2017 or so I mean Toady you have these characters
- 26:12and stay through all the Scully sort of dispersed eventually.
- 26:18So I didn't really know anyone when I started watching, but
- 26:20what got me back into it and this is great marketing because
- 26:25Big storyline towards or 2001-2002 was totally getting
- 26:28married today and they sort of because he's not as conventional
- 26:34looking. Maybe it's so he always had
- 26:36different heavy. She was like this thin blond
- 26:38girls. They're always saying it was
- 26:39sort of The Princess and the toad or whatever you know
- 26:42because he's Toady they'll sort of nickname is great wedding and
- 26:45they were sort of an unlikely couple and it went on for years
- 26:48and years, will they won't they and they did eventually married
- 26:51and then oxy on their wedding day, the car went off the cliff
- 26:56He survived D was never seen again and we had the funeral and
- 27:01everything her body was never found.
- 27:03And it was always a big tell me. She came back as always a big
- 27:05thing and then this news article came out.
- 27:08Deep Bliss is back from the dead, she's going to be in it.
- 27:11So this was like over 10 years later and I thought I have to
- 27:14watch now because I just needs it.
- 27:17I got the same actress back. What is going to happen?
- 27:19Totally settle down. Our kids in the new wife, and
- 27:21she knocks on the door. Hi, I'm back.
- 27:23And that started off a bit. Storyline.
- 27:26That was so successful. They extended it by a couple of
- 27:29years and kept at it were. The original plot was just
- 27:32extended so much and they added so much more because it got.
- 27:35So I think a lot of people started watching except
- 27:38doppelgangers of, then it went on, it was an evil sister.
- 27:43Twin separate those knocks on the door.
- 27:46Yeah. Pretending and but then wow, it
- 27:49was this whole storyline actually.
- 27:50And she was saying yes. I remember you Suzanne.
- 27:52Oh yeah. And all this stuff.
- 27:54She was pretending the whole time.
- 27:57It was the evil double sister but then what they did because
- 28:01it was so successful. They added his whole extra bit
- 28:03where actually there is the real D and she turns up after a
- 28:07while. So we have two of them being
- 28:09played by the same actress and he went on for ages and the even
- 28:13sister got put in prison and then the the her double came to
- 28:17visit. And so they had all these scenes
- 28:18between themselves, evil doppelganger.
- 28:25Then they brought in the evil mother, who was poisoning times
- 28:29current, why talk about this place?
- 28:31Is that Valley McPhee or Nanny Alice as well.
- 28:33So they adequately stuff. I've gotta say when you started
- 28:36telling me about this nanny Alice character, I was like,
- 28:39I've gotta wash episodes and then they showed me some clips
- 28:42and there's this woman. Sweetness and light is making
- 28:44these cookies will she powder and with like codeine and she's
- 28:50going He's going over. It's not just sort of a, I don't
- 28:57know. It sounds a bit.
- 28:57Like what's the American side like Days of Our Lives type of
- 28:59thing? It's not done like that.
- 29:00It's done in a, it sounds ridiculous, but it's done in
- 29:03quite a realistic way. So it's over as period of
- 29:06months, and months. And even years that you're
- 29:08watching this slow-burn storyline, because she came in a
- 29:11bit, a bit happened. Went out.
- 29:12Other things were happening and there were all these clues in
- 29:15the build-up doing. And while that's happening.
- 29:17There's other big story lines happening.
- 29:20They brought in a character, Cassius right?
- 29:24He turns up And he's literally wearing hardly anything.
- 29:27He's like this big sort of bodybuilder guy, he's like, oh
- 29:30your kids, my wife and she hasn't got any, but there's no
- 29:32relation to any one industry. He's not going to be front door,
- 29:34saying, how can I do some gardening for you and he's doing
- 29:36all his gardening in like and they did all the channel 5 did
- 29:39all these promos of him like we're in life.
- 29:41We doing with things and all that everyone in the street
- 29:43sleigh, is this going to get attention from everybody?
- 29:46It's like who is this person was and they put him in the titles
- 29:50straight away and usually there's some rules that, you
- 29:54know, I love how The titles change and you have the
- 29:56characters and they and you know, they can just sometimes
- 29:58they do like, I don't know a month or two and then once they
- 30:01start their first storylines over, you know, they're staying
- 30:03around. So they get put in the time.
- 30:04He's in the title straightaway. So that what's going on?
- 30:07What's Happening anyway? Turns out this is huge build
- 30:10storyline, where actually, he'd been in about six months before
- 30:15in the background as a waiter. Because someone and he was
- 30:18looking for his long-lost. Father, who had died on Guy
- 30:21Fawkes Night in a Jacuzzi dressed as guy for someone had
- 30:24hit him over the head. No, and with alarmed, he was
- 30:28secretly talk undercover trying to find his father but what they
- 30:30planted him and then he was in that six months, he was a bad.
- 30:33He got put into prison and they took him out again because so
- 30:36even like the show knows what it's doing by this point, so
- 30:40they're putting him in the title.
- 30:41So we're not thinking, he's not just sort of villain of the week
- 30:43because he's in the title is, he's gonna some, it's a bit
- 30:46like, you know, like you see in those earlier seen earlier
- 30:49episodes in the background, looks like they did a flashback
- 30:53a year, like a year when This one on for about a year and then
- 30:57they did a flashback and he was there as a weight of the
- 31:00masculine Guy Fawkes Night and he was actually turned out to be
- 31:03the murder. But there was this whole big
- 31:05who, who is it, you know, so why you're saying?
- 31:07So it's a very clever at Fort, you know, all these things.
- 31:10If you're watching as a regular right through, you get so much
- 31:13benefit from that's that's I suppose the benefit of having
- 31:18the longevity. It does.
- 31:19Yeah and knowing it's going to continue.
- 31:21Yes. Is that they can do this?
- 31:22Long-form storytelling with massive payoff.
- 31:24Yeah, they did the same thing. I remember they did it with
- 31:28Phil's, son, Michael, who was trying to kill Julie, Martin in
- 31:33various ways and it started off of him just being a bit of a
- 31:36petulant teen. I'll eventually obviously, he's
- 31:39trying to drug her and throw down a Jacuzzi.
- 31:42I mean, it was amazing but they know what they're doing because
- 31:45with the whole D thing, anything with D or a clue, everyone will
- 31:50be talking about it on Twitter. What is it?
- 31:51And there was like, end-of-year special literary sheet.
- 31:54The Car pulled up in the background of something else.
- 31:56The window came down and there was D and it went up.
- 31:59Again in the car went away. And that was the end of the
- 32:01season and everyone's like, oh my God, what's the next thing?
- 32:04What's the next chapter? They just know what they're
- 32:06doing. Would you say this was another
- 32:08Peak period of Neighbors, when the D I think a lot of viewers
- 32:12came back on board like me who had maybe watch from the 90s and
- 32:15they got everybody watching again I think and so did that
- 32:18attract like and towards again bringing David Tennant back for
- 32:21this RTD back after 70 days. That's the pig is gone down a
- 32:27bit. Let's bring David Tennant back
- 32:29and I think a lot of viewers will come back to who go.
- 32:31Yeah. And I think just bringing that
- 32:32carrot because everyone would always say, oh, what happened to
- 32:34do? It was a big, sort of question,
- 32:36mark, and it's so clever for the producers to do that.
- 32:39But then after that, that led the way for other Heritage
- 32:43characters to come back. So there was always late
- 32:46Reformation. There was lots of references to
- 32:48past lots of 90s, carry, two people that I wouldn't expect a
- 32:50me was on my list of come because I loved her in the 90s
- 32:53and had to come back as a regular character.
- 32:54It was great. Well, she broke his heart.
- 32:57You know, she'll sleep, move. All these Pilots.
- 32:58I mean they did bring magic back as well.
- 33:00I missed that bit around the 30th Anniversary match.
- 33:02Came back as a ghost for a week but Harold it.
- 33:05So no one else could see apart from him.
- 33:07So she was always in the scenes talking to him, but no one else
- 33:09could see that. That's a great way of bringing
- 33:11him back, you know. So so what about the last period
- 33:15Then I sort of last couple years getting great.
- 33:19I think I was because then, well, then you had the first
- 33:22ever gay wedding, I think I'm Australian.
- 33:24Additionally, smokin hot as well, making history.
- 33:28And then that, yeah, the storylines were very
- 33:30Progressive. I think what?
- 33:32I'll never find in Therese hanging off that roof.
- 33:34Yeah, it had this surrogacy storyline with our favorite
- 33:41Jane's daughter. Oh, Charlotte Grimes.
- 33:45Yeah, Charlotte Chimes. Yeah.
- 33:48Nicolette Nicholas, baby swap stories.
- 33:50And so she had a baby and there's a big moment there,
- 33:53where actually? There were two babies All of a
- 33:55sudden, like I said, massive pole came down hit a bar killed
- 33:59somebody and then Paul son went off the rails suddenly a bit.
- 34:02We also have that small drop well and then they were
- 34:04celebrating the 35th Anniversary like dr.
- 34:07Who they love and anniversary special bring everyone in.
- 34:09So bring everybody back when it's an anniversary.
- 34:13You know it's the equivalent the five doctors, you know, the
- 34:16folks you know, it is they bring all these faces back and I think
- 34:20that gets viewers watching as well, but then some of them stay
- 34:23around or some of them. What they did.
- 34:25I think in the 80s and the 90s, you would have a character
- 34:29coming off, see that actor wants to leave their written out and
- 34:32they're always all there in Queensland.
- 34:34Oh, they can't get a flight. When there's a big family
- 34:36emergency, like when match tied, her daughter didn't come to the
- 34:39funeral or anything, you know, I surely know, there's a, the
- 34:42flight's been delayed, she can't get there.
- 34:44Well, he would be there, whereas, some of these other
- 34:47smaller characters, what happens if they sort of dropped in and
- 34:50out a bit more like real life. So you would have Your sister.
- 34:55So you'd have Lucy Robinson, then all of a sudden she come in
- 34:57for a couple of episodes. Go away.
- 34:59You see a few months later because it's a rusty Davis here.
- 35:03A doctor with Jackie Tyler, Mickey coming back every couple
- 35:05of episodes. They leaned into getting some of
- 35:07these other cat faces, not for big stints, some of them were
- 35:12stayed around some of them didn't or they'd be on a court,
- 35:14or do a Skype call and Tom will do a video and it made it even
- 35:18more sort of real life. That actually, there are these
- 35:20people other characters still living their lives out there and
- 35:22they got to come on our Rich history of They were just
- 35:25minding that history towards the end.
- 35:26They were really minor that history, which resulted in the
- 35:29fern lever episode of the current Rod?
- 35:31Well, everyone came back, which is brilliant, which is the
- 35:34Journey's End I suppose. Yeah.
- 35:36Images in time. Yeah, of all of that.
- 35:41So, it was absolutely incredible.
- 35:43The amount of famous people and I know people criticize, Kylie
- 35:49Minogue ingested Donovan, but I'm sure they would, they just
- 35:51had a, like, a days were filming.
- 35:54So for them, To do it at all. They are Mega stars that they
- 35:57are not, they don't own neighbors.
- 35:59Anything that is kind of a no coming back.
- 36:01Is Tom Baker coming back into a the doctor just for one Cameo
- 36:04he's no doctor anything in there.
- 36:06Yeah. It just comes back just to do
- 36:07that large. Yeah but like you said Guy
- 36:09Pearce coming back that was a proper storyline where he
- 36:12reconnected with Jane. Yeah.
- 36:14And there's some serious acting going on that it was really
- 36:17really nice. Like I think that was the
- 36:20biggest surprise of that was how much that pie they gave him and
- 36:23then you just so In the last sequence where Susan Kennedy
- 36:26gave that lovely speech when she said, you know together we will
- 36:31find the perfect. Blair yeah so I'm doing the
- 36:34Irish radian and now and now it's coming back and I don't
- 36:37know if that was such a great ending.
- 36:38It's great that its continuing but I don't know who's coming
- 36:42back. Is it gonna be so different?
- 36:44Is this, this is its reboot. This is It's Christopher
- 36:47Eccleston starting from what is that Gap?
- 36:50We need neighbors magazines. Do a regeneration in the comic.
- 36:56Well, I got another question for you, oh my god.
- 36:58Imagine neighbors poster Magazine anyway.
- 37:01No, wow, so we covered in blood, a proposed to solve do gold and
- 37:06also sorry. Just in terms of the merch you
- 37:09get the neighbors annual like Doctor Who you get the
- 37:11novelizations of the some of the 80s ones.
- 37:13Like Doctor Who there are some you know it was big back.
- 37:17Then I remember animals and also guess.
- 37:19Yeah. Unless you just said that.
- 37:24All we need. Now is a dramas.
- 37:27The Ramsey Street Chronicle has appeared, we need please around.
- 37:31Now, if it wasn't going bang, Mark really could have done
- 37:35that. Okay, another question for you.
- 37:37Yeah, come on. Now, you get a very excited
- 37:39there. Got you, got you all the topic?
- 37:41You're very passionate, this is all about Peak.
- 37:47Deaths. Peak marriages, this is a soap
- 37:52opera. Well it's basically births
- 37:54deaths and marriages really, is that, it's okay.
- 37:56Let's start with births. I've also got not bothered about
- 37:59the births. I've never been excited about
- 38:01me, but I know I might remember anyone being bald in Neighbors?
- 38:05Didn't somebody, I think it was mainly gave birth with a tight
- 38:08still on. I think that's quite baby stuck
- 38:11in the toys. He was a lorry driver for a
- 38:15while and No, he's a taxi driver and this girl that he was faring
- 38:20around was just site to give birth and he couldn't get any
- 38:23signal. So he had to deliver the baby by
- 38:26the side of the road and oh yeah, but births I yeah, they're
- 38:31more sort of 80s. I feel but they go to town on
- 38:34death's. I can I just say to that?
- 38:36I remember very well I remembered after is it
- 38:39definitely which do when they're in the field?
- 38:42They're going on there. The daikon one.
- 38:43Yeah. So that is definitely Skies
- 38:47Mother. So that's Harold's daughter.
- 38:48Is it? What's her name?
- 38:50I remember he was, he was waiting his way for that, it was
- 38:52like para. Crowley was going through this
- 38:54Marsh, screaming out a name, married to Joe mangle.
- 38:57Yeah, it was during my goals Skye's mother house door.
- 39:00I've can think of everybody else around her that conditional
- 39:03carriers, it carer number. But obviously, my other favorite
- 39:09is Julie, Martin's death, just because they made a joke of it
- 39:13is set. The murder mystery party.
- 39:14They're all there and her last fall in the At this point, I
- 39:17mean, she was fabulous. Was a she had told neurotic Jew
- 39:21both versions. Both incarnations of Jeannie.
- 39:22Mine have been brilliant. She was so amazing.
- 39:25She accused the neighbors of cooking and eating the dog,
- 39:29didn't she? But it's the snipers in the 80s,
- 39:32not right now. And she's found date down the
- 39:50bottom of this Bell Tower. And so that becomes a real
- 39:53murderer who killed Julie, Martin, what turns out it was
- 39:56Debbie, where weren't in flashback.
- 39:59We learned later on that everyone up, it's just going no
- 40:02more. Jerry Martin's at the top going
- 40:05you all think I'm a terrible person.
- 40:07She's got this. She's absolutely pissed as
- 40:08houses. She's got a glass of wine in her
- 40:10hands and she just falls off. The top of the belter.
- 40:13Amazing, gotta wash. Your Peak deaths.
- 40:15Are will match going? It was a set really sad, he's
- 40:18that was the first one. That was really sort of a and
- 40:21Smith when he really wants to act, that was so good and it
- 40:25happens quite quickly in these soaps.
- 40:26It happens quite quickly, doesn't it?
- 40:28It's like death shit. Well mattress like diagnose in
- 40:31like two weeks, she's written out, you know, it happened
- 40:33quickly for Todd. He ran across the road and got
- 40:35hit by a car and one of my picks as well as Sonya's death which
- 40:39was a more recent one which a whole episode was devoted to.
- 40:42This is what neighbors did later on?
- 40:44I think they took the leaf from some of the UK soaps.
- 40:47They do these two handers where it's just two characters, very
- 40:51minimal, just between them. They did a couple of those and
- 40:56sonja's, death is a bit like that and that's so very
- 40:59emotional and the acting in that is absolutely brilliant that I
- 41:02think that could be just a short film that short drama film on
- 41:05its own. You don't need to know anything
- 41:06else about that. What about Helen Daniels and
- 41:09Helen of start was sad as well. You can't wash that without
- 41:13tearing up because that is you know, that's like your Tenth
- 41:15Planet. Episode 4 is In it.
- 41:17That's William, Hartnell leaving the series and had, he's leaving
- 41:19the city watching Scott and Charles Eames wedding over and
- 41:23over. She's like, oh darling to
- 41:25Hannah. I'm feeling a bit sleepy, so
- 41:27she's puts her head down on her shoulder.
- 41:29Yeah, and then doesn't wake up. That's all like I really had a
- 41:33mic is like I think she did the piano music, the sad piano music
- 41:41when someone's dead bit like a tricks death but she has a
- 41:44proper Montage, doesn't she? Yeah, she does when she has Dice
- 41:47with death before then when she was nearly get gassed in the
- 41:49garage and lots of things happen.
- 41:51Solid Daniels, menaced on the bungle, bungles a romance
- 41:57laughing. Yeah, any other deaths were
- 42:01floating Drew. Fell off a horse.
- 42:04Oh, that's Ties That and Libby. That was really sad for Liberty.
- 42:07Was there a plot right where flick Scully and Libby were both
- 42:12after the same man? Very most.
- 42:15So what happens Steph Was getting married and younger
- 42:20sister was having an affair with him and then they found out on
- 42:23the a goal to that was a big. My holster always been a quiet
- 42:26industry. Proper bitch fighting going on
- 42:28Lightning hate neighbors that is yeah went in with will go each
- 42:32other but that's always months. What you see these clips?
- 42:34Actually? It's months and months of this,
- 42:36these characters building up to this point, which is great.
- 42:39Well, okay, I don't know. There are some murders.
- 42:41I do want to talk to you about, right?
- 42:43Because neighbors, had a Weird adult spin-off, where some of
- 42:50the younger members of the cast all went off to a desert island.
- 42:53Well, this was the 35th Anniversary week so we had a
- 42:55week, you normal episodes in the daytime where there was a
- 42:59wedding fair going on. So it's five weddings happening
- 43:01in that way, they'll bring back old characters and then there's
- 43:04going to be however, many deaths as well that week.
- 43:07And that was a late night version where the other another
- 43:10set of characters were bought on an island with a little, did
- 43:13they know there was a psychopath on the island with them?
- 43:17Who's trying to kill them? All looking hot Psychopathic,
- 43:20they're all trying to fuck him and he's trying to kill them
- 43:21all. So yeah.
- 43:23So that's great. And astonished me about that
- 43:26when you show me clips that I was like a movie, it was shot
- 43:30like a bloody movie. So a lot was put into it and
- 43:32channel 5, put a lot of money into that.
- 43:34So the BBC gave up Neighbors in 9 2004, which I think was a big.
- 43:40I don't know why they did that they didn't want to pay.
- 43:43We're just giving a Mondeo is where ice when talk about the
- 43:45same siren wails. Exactly.
- 43:46I'm Like that dick head moves whether PPC.
- 43:49So then it went over to Channel 5 and I think the viewing
- 43:53figures went down because I just think generally Channel 5, it's
- 43:55not as many people have Channel 5.
- 43:57Yeah. And that's when the pitcher
- 43:58changed as well. When it got graded and film
- 44:00rised, where and they're thinking, right?
- 44:06He's very much game. Show we in the studio, you can
- 44:08tell it's fake. But what then?
- 44:09They went over to more these real sets and they upgraded
- 44:12everything when it went to HD as well and the picture and it
- 44:15just, yeah. And they do sell these Drone
- 44:18footage as well and they rebuilt.
- 44:21So they used to use the real Gardens.
- 44:23Yeah, for the residents on the street and they're swimming
- 44:26pools and stuff, but then they rebuilt all of that on on the
- 44:30lot. So all of the gardens became
- 44:33sets which you can use whenever and they came a bit bigger and I
- 44:35don't think they're very much like real life.
- 44:37So you said so many, there were some times where they only had
- 44:41the Studio's available and there are other times where they had
- 44:42the outsides available. Yeah, you'll notice.
- 44:44There are some episodes where they're all just Outside.
- 44:47I've been there drawing those? Yeah this is there was an
- 44:49interview with one of the writers.
- 44:51So what happened that you have one set of cast that are on
- 44:54location? The other set are on the studio
- 44:57and then they sort of swap over. And so the right is it's all
- 45:00different writers. Each episode is not like, it's
- 45:03so the storylines are pitched out a night.
- 45:05And then, okay, I'm so sorry too.
- 45:09There's another Doctor Who parallel because Pete, look Ty,
- 45:12yes, Doctor Who fan practice a us, an award for writing them.
- 45:16Script editor and script writer Davis.
- 45:19I really want to talk to people in time.
- 45:21I don't know something I really want to talk to him.
- 45:23Anyway, can I continue my story? Thank you.
- 45:25Yeah, sorry. So you've got these, so the
- 45:29writers are like, right. This these are, this is what
- 45:31needs to happen and you have the sets available because you're in
- 45:37studio this week for these episodes.
- 45:38So then the writers have to work out, right?
- 45:40This important business meeting needs to happen but we don't
- 45:43have pools office set available. We've only got the pub That's
- 45:47why it goes a little slightly off real life, where the light
- 45:50we need to have this confidential business meeting in
- 45:52the coffee shop, or in the because, and it's more of a
- 45:56necessity of the set rather than because you're watching it.
- 45:59Like, why are you having this really important business in the
- 46:02middle of a pub, in the daytime? You know, you wouldn't do that.
- 46:04But that is because they've only got that set that week or these
- 46:08characters need to be outside on the street.
- 46:10This point I have this conversation.
- 46:12Oh they have conversations outside rather than in The Host
- 46:16range. Can I have a chat to you?
- 46:18Oh, we just going to stand out on the street here, rather than
- 46:20being your house together. So it's a big jigsaw puzzle as
- 46:24well. We actually writing the one,
- 46:26that's the most amazing. And they were the first
- 46:29production to come back after coat after of things, stopped in
- 46:33the world to come back. The first TV production, to go
- 46:35back and they'd worked out bubbles.
- 46:38Did they bubbled up? The two cars and only had one
- 46:41set of cast outside and one set of cast insights that made it
- 46:43even more difficult. Yeah.
- 46:44But clear. So you only ever saw these.
- 46:46Outside for months and months and months but it was so good
- 46:50and they were the first of the year to go back into production
- 46:52and to carry on and they set things up for the rest of the
- 46:55world. Other companies were getting in
- 46:57touch when I how do you, how are you doing this?
- 46:58What are you doing? So it's it's very graphic.
- 47:01Great, what? So we've done births, we've done
- 47:04deaths. Yeah marriages, she's got
- 47:07Charlie allies, but by during Libby's wedding, was great.
- 47:11I had of Scottish feel yet to eat haggis and wear a kilt and
- 47:14all that stuff. So gay weddings, obviously a Gay
- 47:17wedding was a, yeah, it had what's-her-name's your watch
- 47:20Kath & Kim. No.
- 47:21Okay, there's a famous comedian from that who was there,
- 47:26celebrant in that, which turned out to, because half-sister just
- 47:30kind of stay generally, went out and she came back and she'd
- 47:33read, and she knocked down half their fireplace and Warren redid
- 47:36their living room for them. I'll tend to be secret
- 47:39millionaire because she's written a song that got loads of
- 47:41royalties and she bought called the tram.
- 47:46Now between soap operas like neighbors.
- 47:50Yeah. And Doctor Who is how fucking
- 47:52absurd the twists and turns? No wonder you love neighbors
- 47:55because it's just like Doctor Who.
- 47:57Yeah. Very you know your long-lost
- 47:59sisters are things like this evil doppelganger it's just a
- 48:03place that's not make laws to me.
- 48:05Okay we'll look we've got about 10 minutes left.
- 48:08Okay we covered a lot of ground here.
- 48:10I think excited to be talking so passionately about this subject
- 48:15but I would like Just for five minutes because anyone that
- 48:18follows to watch who will know of The Saga when you faced with
- 48:24a member of neighbors fandom, so, perhaps, you'd care to share
- 48:28your story about that. So, in the 2000s, when I was
- 48:33watching, I taped all the episodes, right?
- 48:35She's a bit like a doctor who fan would do.
- 48:37So I had all these tapes you a couple of years worth of
- 48:40episodes and I started to digitize them all because
- 48:44there's taking up so much space or it's getting DVDs, I've got a
- 48:47good chunk of episodes and so I'm going to touch on Twitter
- 48:50saying hi. I hear you've got talk to and
- 48:53not take neighbors episodes and then we started an exchange.
- 48:57This fan in Australia, who wants to collect them all.
- 48:59He's got loads. What should be reasonable?
- 49:01But you just hide her at like a lot.
- 49:03Like the conversation just started to go around?
- 49:05What episodes of you gotta be? Like, I've got these.
- 49:08You like, okay. Have you got this?
- 49:09I was like no. I've got these.
- 49:10I have. You got this?
- 49:11No. Are these the only ones I've
- 49:12got? Why haven't you got these ones?
- 49:14I was like because I haven't got them.
- 49:16Okay. I have these ones.
- 49:17Anyway, I just went on and on, we didn't exchange.
- 49:20He sent me a big chunk of DVDs to be fair and I sent a load of
- 49:24to him. And then you as soon, I like I
- 49:26said, like, I don't know, like 50 DVDs to him, and he sent 50
- 49:30to me and then it was like, have you got any more?
- 49:32I'm like that. I, it takes a long time to
- 49:34digitize them. I've got a sit through each
- 49:36stage, you know, put them through and he was like, well,
- 49:39when you can win, can I have them?
- 49:41When can I have them? When can I have?
- 49:42I got, I'm just gonna mess up your nails and that was about a
- 49:45year and a half ago. I sort of gave up and I just
- 49:50don't want to send a medic because then he wanted to do a
- 49:52file transfer but the files are too big.
- 49:54Then he wants me to buy my hard drive and send them all over.
- 49:57And then I sent him these DVDs and he said oh can I have them
- 50:00all on digital as well? Because the quality isn't great.
- 50:02And it's like they're really old VHS is I said to him as well.
- 50:05They're old VHS is they're not great quality kind of anyway
- 50:08it's basically a stalker. Now Annie I getting emails and
- 50:11getting messages day day after day after day and it's about a
- 50:14year and a half ago and at last Said I was like, look, I've
- 50:17given you all these. Have you watched me?
- 50:19He's like, yeah, I don't I don't do anything else.
- 50:21So I've got time to watch them all this Obsession.
- 50:24Another let he keeps us from every episode is like this
- 50:28reminds me of a neighbor's episode.
- 50:30Yeah, he's gonna turn up on your doorstep so soon.
- 50:33So anyway I'll be your long lost brother so there's some sets of
- 50:36fans out there. If you think Doctor Who fans are
- 50:38obsessive, he's like the Ian Levine.
- 50:40Yeah, it's a surprise, but it came off the air.
- 50:46He didn't do his own. It's no fun drive was like at
- 50:49least it stopped now. He's can collect every other
- 50:51shows probably a bit like whiz kid, you know.
- 50:53Uh, I know it's not as good as it used to be but I still
- 50:56terribly interested. Well yes, I read your still
- 51:01being message now. Yeah.
- 51:03Oh, bless you. Yeah.
- 51:04Well there you go when I'll get poisoned messages on my blog
- 51:07don't worry about it's part and parcel putting things out there.
- 51:10I'm afraid. Well why don't you tell
- 51:13everybody what episodes you've chosen to be chosen?
- 51:16Five. I've got six.
- 51:18Wow, I can't, I wanted to be an impossible task but I want to
- 51:22try and get a bit of an overview of the whole series.
- 51:25So I've chosen, you know, some of the different decades but
- 51:28also ones that I think are a great to talk about.
- 51:32So I've got one from 1986 episode 249.
- 51:39And this one, I've chosen this just because it shows that
- 51:43Community Spirit, those regular characters, the peak in the And
- 51:47it's the one where they do the pancake competition.
- 51:48We've matched. Hello!
- 51:50So we'll call it the pancake competition God, which sums up
- 51:53Neighbors to it, you can have wishes, you can have weeks and
- 51:56weeks of episodes. Talk about this pancake
- 51:58competition and if of anticipation that there's going
- 52:01to be a pancake competition. So we have to do that was the
- 52:04Doctor Who equivalent of that episode.
- 52:06Oh God, the chase. Um yeah next then we're going
- 52:14way forward in time, actually to To episode 3445 skipped forward,
- 52:21Fred are thousands of showing a bit of 90s drama, and this is
- 52:25what I remember watching the 1999 season finale, celebrating
- 52:30the Millennium, a big house, party in the street.
- 52:32And there's a fire. Oh, I love that hat.
- 52:35Besides I just got all of the characters in it as well,
- 52:38because I really, I remember watching this, at the Tarsus say
- 52:40that, I definitely got the channel 5 budget at this point.
- 52:42Good fire itself is so lame. Okay, and We are going up to
- 52:49episode 4773, which is the 20th anniversary.
- 52:54So this is the five doctors of Neighbors, which has ever.
- 52:58This is the first time where it's really looking back on the
- 53:00show and you get in lots of faces together is that where
- 53:03Annalise makes her video and Lisa's making a documentary
- 53:05about the history of the street and everyone everybody could
- 53:08what sounds best name the woman. I love the relay Marlene Okay,
- 53:18and then we're going to fit more recent because this is what I've
- 53:21really been enjoying most recently.
- 53:24So then we're going to episode 8 2002.
- 53:28We've skipped file for thousands.
- 53:30Oh I know. I know so Channel 5 towards the
- 53:35end of saying we're going to put more money into the show because
- 53:38usually what would happen is the show would stop sort of over
- 53:41Christmas time. You'd have that season break,
- 53:44but then they said we're going to do more specials.
- 53:45We're going to carry on right through and At a big press
- 53:47thing. Saying going to carry on through
- 53:49Christmas with going to make more episodes.
- 53:51That did it for two years before the accident.
- 53:53So I didn't really live up to their promises, but this was one
- 53:56of the first Christmas Day episodes.
- 53:59Wow. So this is 8002.
- 54:01Jim Robinson appears in a Christmas ball ball so we have
- 54:05to watch it. So you see everyone celebrating
- 54:07Christmas. They brought Jim Robinson back
- 54:12from the dead. See, I'm glad A bit wacky and
- 54:23the actor. Yeah, yes.
- 54:28Anyway, well that's just it was special effects, right?
- 54:32This is actually put him inside a ball ball.
- 54:35No, they didn't put him inside the Border, you know?
- 54:36He just turns out anyway. So and actually you know what,
- 54:42if made a continue that in the big episode on Christmas Day bit
- 54:46like it. Doctor Who the Christmas Day
- 54:47episode? You could have had everybody
- 54:49watching our neighbors on Christmas day.
- 54:51Yeah, they're always I could have not like this.
- 54:54Yeah, you're right. And then we're going to 8050 to
- 55:02which is Sonya's death, which I talked about before which is
- 55:06like a tube which is just between Toady and Sonya.
- 55:09She knows it's like your event episode that you.
- 55:11This is a big event one and she knows.
- 55:16So she's gonna die. She's been given like days to
- 55:19live but he's she hasn't told him.
- 55:21All right, so are my God can't, it's gonna be tough to watch
- 55:25that one. Okay.
- 55:26You're tearing up that. I told ya.
- 55:28So your last one and then the last one is eight thousand one
- 55:32hundred and forty one the D storyline which I said, well
- 55:36it's where Dee and her evil twin sister meet on the top of a
- 55:41cliff, top obviously know. And what happens then?
- 55:46It is absolutely no. So the doctor and the master and
- 55:50last of the time little. Yes.
- 55:52Yeah, those moments like because that's the combination of a
- 55:56couple of years worth of storyline that they've been
- 55:58working towards and it's been such a success.
- 56:01So there we are. I am so impressed that you have
- 56:03managed to boil maybe it's out. I mean to be fair there about
- 56:07100 episodes you could have chosen this so many when it
- 56:10comes to births deaths. Marriages events.
- 56:13Yeah it's so things going on. And before we go there do you
- 56:19have like a favorite storyline it?
- 56:22I think it would have to be the DNA Andrea one, just because it
- 56:25goes all because it went on for so long and it gave so many
- 56:27moments. So many Mysteries, they just
- 56:31executed it really, really well. I think, wow.
- 56:34And I know and sometimes it goes over the top a little bit maybe.
- 56:37But actually, it was great. Drama is great.
- 56:39It's well-acted. And the way that she plays the
- 56:41two different ones, because she's because one of them, sort
- 56:43of like, a more well-spoken version, the other one's a bit.
- 56:46Of the Bogan e sort of sister that was forgotten.
- 56:50So she plays up against herself. Okay.
- 56:53Yeah. You know like I suppose that's
- 56:55Australian world of sort of caviar.
- 56:57Okay. I think wow, Jack our way to get
- 57:02started with it. Oh my God.
- 57:04You talked so much about so much.
- 57:06Neighbors content, here. I'm desperate to go back to
- 57:08episode while the neighbors family, since the whole after
- 57:10talk to you, when we watch these episodes of The Fan meet ups
- 57:12that I've done and stars. Well, the thing is about these
- 57:15neighbors episodes is there, Only 20 minutes.
- 57:17So while the better chat before laughter and they'll be
- 57:19available online for people to watch along with us as well.
- 57:22They are all up. There were Dailymotion and stuff
- 57:24you can't find them. Well, I think we should probably
- 57:26see this fantastic episode of how to structure our where I was
- 57:31both singing. The name is oh sure.
- 57:46One, that's good.
