- 0:00SPEAKER_00: We are finishing up our series today, The Story of Movements.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: And in this series,
- 0:08we have tracked the reformation in the faith community that
- 0:14seemed to occur every
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: 500 years or so.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: We began with Malachi,
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: if you remember,
- 0:21who was speaking to a people who were going through the motions
- 0:25while their hearts
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: were far away from God.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: We moved to Jesus,
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: a guy you probably remember,
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: who stood in the shadow of the empire and announced a kingdom of heaven.
- 0:40We listened to the monks and to the desert fathers and mothers
- 0:45who left power
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: behind and sought God in the wilderness when the church felt very,
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: very compromised.
- 0:57We walked through the great schism of 1054 when Christians who
- 1:03shared the same Lord
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: could not share the same table.
- 1:09And we looked at the Reformation when the Spirit stirred fresh
- 1:15conviction about
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Scripture and grace and conscience and the shape of the church.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: And now...
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Today,
- 1:26we arrive at the last question of this series and the beginning
- 1:32questions that we
- 1:33will begin to ask ourselves as we go through Lent and move
- 1:38towards Easter.
- 1:40What is the reformation movement that we are experiencing in
- 1:47the 21st century?
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Which is, if you don't know kids, that's the century we are in right now.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Is there one?
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I think is an important question.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: And if there is one,
- 2:03how should we be participating in that reformation movement
- 2:10that God is leading?
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: And,
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: important for us as a church of the brethren,
- 2:15what is our role as a church of the brethren in this
- 2:19reformation movement?
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Let's start with a farm image.
- 2:26Many of you are familiar with farms that are sitting in this
- 2:29room today,
- 2:29right?
- 2:30Every once in a while,
- 2:32you have to clean out a barn,
- 2:35or at least you should.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Not because barns are bad,
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: but because barns collect things,
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: good things,
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: useful things,
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: sentimental things,
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Broken things, things that need to be fixed, right?
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Things that you forgot you even owned.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I've got a barn like that.
- 3:01And if you never stored it,
- 3:03you lose what matters inside of all of that clutter.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: The tools that you need get buried under it.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: The space that should hold life becomes storage for yesterday.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: And the church is like that.
- 3:23Not because the church is broken beyond repair,
- 3:27but because the church is a human institution.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: We accumulate habits and assumptions and practices and structures.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Some were once very helpful.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Some were once
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Some were once necessary,
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: but over time,
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: if we are not careful,
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: we confuse the piles in the barn for the mission of God in our time.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: I do believe that we are living through a new sorting,
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: a new rummaging,
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: a new reformation of the church of Jesus Christ.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: You probably are very aware that the last 500 years have brought a
- 4:23of change the first 400 years produced staggering change but
- 4:30over the last 100
- 4:31years the world has changed in almost unbelievable paces cars
- 4:38and highways changed
- 4:39where we live and how often we move in our world radio and
- 4:45television computer and
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: the internet changed how we learn and who we trust
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: The telephone, used to have wires, became the smartphone.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: The local became global.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: The private, through social media, has now become the public.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Two world wars,
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: the Cold War,
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: the civil rights movement,
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: economic upheavals,
- 5:14the cultural revolutions that reshaped what people expect from
- 5:18institutions,
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: including the church.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: In the middle of all of that, many people discovered a painful truth.
- 5:34Grandma's faith and the church were beautiful,
- 5:40but they did not answer the new modern questions.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Now, some tried to preserve her world exactly as it was.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Others rejected it completely.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Many,
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: many,
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: many simply just drifted away,
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: not because they hated God,
- 6:04but because the church seemed to be speaking a language that
- 6:09was no longer relevant
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: to their lives.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: This is part of why so many refocusing movements have emerged.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Think of the streams we have seen in the last century.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Some Christians refocused on justice,
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: serving the poor,
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: confronting racism,
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: releasing oppression,
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: and standing up for the vulnerable.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: That stream includes the social gospel,
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: civil rights era witness,
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: liberation theology,
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: and many forms of community involvement.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Some Christians refocused on the Holy Spirit,
- 6:52hunger for renewal,
- 6:53healing,
- 6:54worship,
- 6:55prayer,
- 6:55and the experience of God's presence.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: That stream includes Pentecostal and charismatic renewal,
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: the Jesus movement,
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: and the contemporary worship culture.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Some Christians refocused on mission and discipleship,
- 7:12asking how the church can faithfully live when it is no longer
- 7:17the center of
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: society.
- 7:20By the way,
- 7:21if you didn't know,
- 7:22the church is no longer the center of society.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: That stream includes the missional church,
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: a conversation,
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: and the emergent church,
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: which I was very fascinated with many,
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: many years ago,
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: and actually still am.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Some re-Christians refocused on growth,
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: strategy,
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: and influence,
- 7:46building large churches and strong programs that reach many
- 7:51people with mega
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: churches.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: And some Christians refocused on nations.
- 7:57power and cultural control blending the cross with the flag
- 8:03treating political
- 8:05victory as the measure of god's endorsement and that stream is
- 8:10sometimes described
- 8:11as christian nationalism and is one of the great influences of
- 8:16our time right now
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: so how do we make sense
- 8:21all of this and all of these refocusing movements without
- 8:27getting lost in it?
- 8:29How do we participate in the movement of God without being
- 8:33swept away into every
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: trend,
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: every argument,
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: every outrage?
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: And when there seems to be so many options, what do we do with each one?
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Which one do we participate in?
- 8:51And I think a big question,
- 8:54were these movements reformations or just refocuses?
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: And this, I think, is where 1 Peter becomes a gift.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: 1 Peter was written to Christians in 62 CE,
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Christian era,
- 9:17just before the destruction of the Jerusalem temple and the
- 9:22Nero persecutions.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: And these folks,
- 9:25though they were being formed by the apostles and into this new
- 9:30Christian movement,
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: they felt scattered and they felt small.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: They lived under pressure.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: They were misunderstood.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: They were not in charge.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: They did not control the culture.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: They did not have a microphone to speak from or a platform to speak from.
- 9:53They had to figure out how to live faithfully when their
- 9:56neighbors looked at them
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: with suspicion.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: And Peter does not tell them to win the culture wars.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: He does not tell them to seize power.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: He does not tell them to withdraw into bitterness.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: He tells them to become a certain kind of people.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: 1 Peter 2.9 says,
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: You are a chosen people,
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: a royal priesthood,
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: a holy nation,
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: God's own people,
- 10:30so that you may declare the mighty acts of the one who called
- 10:34you out of darkness
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: and into marvelous light.
- 10:39And then Peter says something that is almost this whole sermon
- 10:43in one line.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: In 1 Peter 2.12,
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: he says,
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: live such good lives among your neighbors that even when they accuse you,
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: they will see your goodness.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: That is not a strategy.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: That is a way of being in the world.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: The reformation of the 21st century,
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: at its best,
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: I believe,
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: is not about re-establishing institutions.
- 11:23It is about forming communities of Jesus-shaped presence in a
- 11:31world that is aching
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: and needing good neighbors.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Mr. Rogers.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: And believe it or not, that brings us to suffering.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: Because suffering is one of the great common experiences of our time.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Many of us carry private suffering.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: Grief that no one sees in your life because you're covering it up.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: health struggles,
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: anxiety,
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: family tension,
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: financial pressures,
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: loneliness,
- 12:13the feeling that the world is moving faster than our souls can
- 12:17ever keep up with.
- 12:20And many of us carry public suffering,
- 12:23the temperature of our culture,
- 12:27the constant noise.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: The sense that everyone is angry and no one is listening.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: The fear that our kids will not be okay.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Our kids fears that they will not be safe at school.
- 12:54The fear that yesterday the United States and Israel initiated
- 13:00military action against Iran.
- 13:06We carry a lot of fears and stress and tensions and inner
- 13:11suffering in our lives today.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: I read a book,
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: there was a book review actually,
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: this last week,
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: that described suffering like moving through a long night.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: Sunset, dusk, midnight, and then dawn and daylight.
- 13:36These are seasons when things fall apart these long nights and
- 13:43we can tell that the
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: light is fading in our world.
- 13:47There are seasons when we feel disoriented and we do not know
- 13:52what to trust.
- 13:54There are seasons that feel like midnight when we are unable to
- 13:58see the path and we
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: wonder if morning is ever coming.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: And then
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: Fortunately, eventually, a thin line of light appears on the horizon.
- 14:09Not because everything is fixed overnight,
- 14:12but because we begin to breathe again.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: And we find meaning, and we find strength, and we find a way to live.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: First Peter speaks to that same kind of long night.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: But Peter names something that the psychology books cannot fully name.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Peter calls it living hope in the midst of suffering.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: Living hope is not denial,
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: it is not pretending,
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: it is not saying that everything happens for a reason.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: Living hope is the conviction that God is still God even at midnight.
- 15:01Living hope is the belief that Jesus has already passed through
- 15:06death and come out
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: on the other side.
- 15:09Living hope is the strength to keep doing good even if the
- 15:14world is not clapping for you.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: So what guidance does 1 Peter give for suffering,
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: and how does it shape our participation in this new reformation?
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: here are three simple invitations,
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: and there are plenty more in 1 Peter,
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: but I only had time for three.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: The first invitation, do not be surprised by the fire.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Peter says, do not be surprised when trials come.
- 15:47In other words,
- 15:49do not interpret suffering as proof that God has abandoned you.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Do not treat hardship as a strange interruption to faith.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: Because suffering is simply part of being a human being.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's a cost of doing good.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's just the pain of living in a world that is not yet healed.
- 16:22And this matters because one of the biggest spiritual traps in
- 16:27suffering is shame.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: We assume something must be wrong with us.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: We assume that somehow we fail.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: We assume maybe God's angry with us.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: We assume that we're alone in all of this.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: But Peter says, you are not alone.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: You are not the first or the last ones that are going to suffer.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: You are not abandoned.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: And friends, that is the word we need in the church today.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: If we want to participate in the reformation of our time,
- 17:04we need to become a community where people can tell the truth
- 17:11about their pain
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: without being judged,
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: without us trying to fix them,
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: and without rushing them to say,
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: God is good all the time and all the time God is good.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: We must allow for true grief in the midst of suffering.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: If someone is in the sunset, we do not scold them for losing daylight.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: If someone is at midnight, we do not demand a smile.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: We sit with them.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: We pray.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: We bring meals.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: We show up.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: We keep loving them.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: This is and has long been the brethren way.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: This is what we do when we are at our best.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: A second invitation, respond to suffering with gentleness and goodness.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Peter says, do not repay evil for evil.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: Do not return insult for insult.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: Bless instead.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: And I'll have to tell you,
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: in our current moment,
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: the easiest thing is to become reactive,
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: to mirror the anger around us,
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: to sharpen our words,
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: to treat people as enemies,
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: to live as if outrage is courage.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Peter offers a different path.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: He says,
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: be ready to give an answer for the living hope that is in you,
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: but do it with gentleness and with respect.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Notice what Peter assumes in his letter.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: He assumes that we will be asked about our hope.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: He assumes that we will be asked about our hope.
- 19:04That means our lives should look different enough that someone
- 19:10notices our
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: difference and asks about it.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: And let me be clear.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: Not because we're louder.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: Not because we're meaner.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Not because we are more certain about everything.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: But because we are steadier,
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: kinder,
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: more honest,
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: less afraid,
- 19:40this is one of the most important ways we resist the unhealthy
- 19:45currents of our
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: time,
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: including the blending of faith with fear-based power.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: If the gospel becomes a tool for control, it ceases to be the gospel.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: If the church becomes a machine for winning, it stops being the church.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: The church of the brethren has a calling here, I believe.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: We are a peace church,
- 20:11which means we say we believe that the way of Jesus does not
- 20:16require coercion.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: We follow a crucified individual, if you didn't know.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: Not a conquering ideology.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: We practice humility, service, and reconciliation, not domination.
- 20:35So,
- 20:36in our day-to-day life,
- 20:38this looks like choosing a different tone in your home.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: It looks like refusing the cheap pleasures of sarcasm,
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: which I'm a big fan of,
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: I apologize,
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: and argument.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: It looks like listening before speaking.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: It looks like blessing the person who irritates you.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: It looks like telling the truth without trying to crush the other person.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: This is how we participate in God's movement in a polarized world.
- 21:09We become a people who embody a different spirit as we speak
- 21:15the truth in love.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: And lastly, the third invitation.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: Turn suffering into serving.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: Peter says, above all, love one another deeply.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Offer hospitality without complaining.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: Use whatever gift you have received to serve others.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: This is where suffering and reformation meet.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: Because suffering can shrink us.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: It can turn us back.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: inward on ourselves.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: It can make us protective and isolated.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: But Peter says, don't let that happen.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: Let hardship make you more human, not less.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Let pain open you to compassion.
- 22:05Let midnight become a place where you learn how to carry
- 22:08someone else's midnight.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: And how can this be lived out?
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: If you're discouraged, serve someone.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: If you feel powerless, do one small act of goodness.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: If you feel overwhelmed by the world, make a meal for a neighbor.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: Write a note.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: Visit someone.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: Pray for your children.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: Give generously or just volunteer at a non-profit.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: Not because these acts erase suffering.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: They do not.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: but because they keep love alive and visible in the world.
- 22:50The reformation movement of the 21st century will not be
- 22:53measured by new church
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: brands or new worship trends,
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: in my opinion.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: It will be measured, however, by whether ordinary Christians
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: become people of faithful, neighboring presence.
- 23:15Friends,
- 23:16if you feel like the church is in a state of flux right now,
- 23:20you are not imagining it.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: Things are being sorted.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: Some will be tossed,
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: some will be repaired,
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: some will be carried forward with thankfulness,
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: and some things will be replaced by something simpler and truer.
- 23:37So let us participate in this reformation of our time by living
- 23:44the way 1 Peter
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: calls us to live.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Not afraid, not bitter, not grasping for control.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Hopeful, humble, and active in love.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: And when the world asks, how are you still alive?
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: How are you still kind in all of this?
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: How are you still hopeful in the midst of this?
- 24:12May we be ready to answer with gentleness and respect because
- 24:18our Redeemer lives.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: And because the morning is coming.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: Amen.
