- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:11Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:38Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:42Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this episode, we are talking about
- 0:46Speaker 1: the Notorious Big Rest in peace, Robbie Robertson and that
- 0:51Speaker 1: tattoo you got years ago that is a dis g
- 0:54Speaker 1: r acee disgrace, and of course your voicemails, text, dms
- 0:59Speaker 1: and more and as always, a whole.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Lot of Rosie.
- 1:03Speaker 1: All right, discues, let's get into it, okay, and this
- 1:17Speaker 1: week's re release of Part one of the Notorious Big Story. Listen,
- 1:22Speaker 1: we're doing this, you know, re release here of the
- 1:25Speaker 1: parts one and part two of Big because we're coming
- 1:27Speaker 1: up where we're at, actually, I should say, the fiftieth
- 1:30Speaker 1: anniversary of hip hop and we are also in a
- 1:35Speaker 1: little bit of a break here before we get into
- 1:38Speaker 1: the next season of Disgraceland and that entire season will
- 1:42Speaker 1: be hip hop focused. More on that later. It's not
- 1:45Speaker 1: what you think. I promise you. If you're on our
- 1:48Speaker 1: email list, by the way, you already know what that is.
- 1:50Speaker 1: So if you want to be in on the in
- 1:52Speaker 1: stuff before it gets announced elsewhere, you can sign up
- 1:56Speaker 1: for our emails. That's easy to do on our website
- 1:58Speaker 1: www dot disgrace leympod dot com. But back to this
- 2:03Speaker 1: notorious big story. In these episodes, we talk about the
- 2:07Speaker 1: guy who entered adulthood as a crack dealer and then
- 2:10Speaker 1: left this world as one of the most famous hip
- 2:12Speaker 1: hop artists of all time, the notorious Biggie Smalls. He
- 2:17Speaker 1: there's no way around it, you got to say it.
- 2:18Speaker 1: He altered the course of hip hop with his debut album,
- 2:22Speaker 1: Ready to Die.
- 2:23Speaker 2: It's an album that.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Was also a soundtrack of sorts for his highly publicized
- 2:28Speaker 1: super dangerous and unnecessary if you asked me, beef between
- 2:33Speaker 1: him and his one time friend fellow rapper Tupac Procure.
- 2:36Speaker 1: But that whole saga, it almost never happened. I'm not
- 2:40Speaker 1: going to get into it too much here. Check out
- 2:41Speaker 1: the episode for more details, but it of course got
- 2:45Speaker 1: me thinking, what are some of the biggest musical beefs
- 2:48Speaker 1: of all time? Biggie and Tupac, John Lennon and Paul McCartney,
- 2:53Speaker 1: Roger Waters and David Gilmour, Liam and Noel Gallagher. There's
- 2:57Speaker 1: got to be some old country singer songwriter beef, country
- 3:01Speaker 1: Nashville musician beef going way back that I'm not aware of.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Well, who do you got? All right? We've got episodes
- 3:06Speaker 2: on all these guys.
- 3:06Speaker 1: We've got two episodes on Big, two episodes on Pac,
- 3:09Speaker 1: one episode on Big Am poc cover, a bunch of
- 3:12Speaker 1: Beatles angles and eight episodes I believe, But we don't
- 3:15Speaker 1: spend a lot of time on the beef between John
- 3:17Speaker 1: and Paul. Our Pink Floyd episode is basically a Sid
- 3:20Speaker 1: Barrett episode. Doesn't really touch on David Gilmore and John Waters.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I'm sorry, Roger Waters doesn't touch on John Waters at all,
- 3:29Speaker 1: John Waters, that'd be a good bad Lands episode, But
- 3:31Speaker 1: I digress. Okay, So you know in our Oasis episode
- 3:35Speaker 1: kind of predates the whole fraternal relationship dysfunction that we
- 3:38Speaker 1: now have between the brothers Gallagher. So stupid question of
- 3:42Speaker 1: the week, what's the biggest, baddest craziest musical beef in
- 3:45Speaker 1: music history. Tough to argue with Biggie and Tupac, but
- 3:48Speaker 1: put them aside. Is it John and Paul?
- 3:51Speaker 2: Is it Liam?
- 3:51Speaker 1: And Knowl?
- 3:52Speaker 2: Is it Roger and David? Who is it? Who do
- 3:54Speaker 2: you got? Call me?
- 3:55Speaker 1: Let me know six one seven nine oh six six
- 3:57Speaker 1: six three eight, or you can do so you can
- 3:59Speaker 1: let me know by text as well at that number
- 4:01Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Speaking of which, let's get into your voicemails right here,
- 4:08Speaker 1: right now from last week j.
- 4:11Speaker 3: If Juba and at a six one fourth. And I
- 4:17Speaker 3: just wondered, where did you learn to write so well?
- 4:23Speaker 3: Did you go to college or is this something that
- 4:26Speaker 3: you just, you know, specialized, been in school as a
- 4:32Speaker 3: writer myself, it just kind of comes naturally. But you're
- 4:39Speaker 3: an amazing storyteller and an amazing writer. And I'm going
- 4:45Speaker 3: to tell you I wish your episodes were longer than
- 4:48Speaker 3: like a half an hour because the stories are en thrawling.
- 4:55Speaker 3: So keep it up. Do you drinking? I have to
- 4:58Speaker 3: talk for a long long time later.
- 5:02Speaker 1: All right, thank you six to one four. To answer
- 5:05Speaker 1: your question, I taught myself to write. I'm still teaching
- 5:08Speaker 1: myself to write.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Writing.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I believe it's an everyday learning thing. Okay, it's like singing.
- 5:15Speaker 1: The more you use the muscle, the stronger it gets.
- 5:18Speaker 1: And for me, I taught myself how to write, for sure,
- 5:21Speaker 1: especially how to write podcasts. But I'm constantly teaching myself
- 5:25Speaker 1: how to write in different ways and different mediums, to
- 5:27Speaker 1: tell stories in different ways, reading screenplays, I'm always doing that.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I'm always writing other scripts for other projects. There, of course,
- 5:35Speaker 1: was the book that I wrote, the anthology, the Disgraceline book.
- 5:39Speaker 1: It's you know, that's helped me. It's all helped me
- 5:42Speaker 1: to learn just doing it. The act of doing it
- 5:44Speaker 1: is super helpful, like anything else. I also learned from
- 5:48Speaker 1: other writers. I researched a lot of stuff. I read
- 5:51Speaker 1: books and essays that other writers have written on writing,
- 5:54Speaker 1: interviews they've given on the craft. Stephen King's book was
- 5:56Speaker 1: really helpful. David Mammon has published a bunch on write.
- 6:01Speaker 2: I've I've read a.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Bunch of interviews with Clinton Tarantino and a lot of
- 6:04Speaker 1: his criticism on on other films. That's helped. Robert Towns
- 6:09Speaker 1: written some books. So there's a lot out there, and
- 6:12Speaker 1: it's a cont for me. It's a constant education. I
- 6:15Speaker 1: didn't I didn't study writing in any way in school
- 6:18Speaker 1: beyond what they just teach you in the basics.
- 6:20Speaker 2: I went to college.
- 6:21Speaker 1: To answer your question, I went to college, but I
- 6:23Speaker 1: majored in music industry and uh in history.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Uh.
- 6:27Speaker 1: But that that that was That was that was enough.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I guess learning how to write term papers in a
- 6:31Speaker 1: lot of ways taught me how to write scripts. Also
- 6:35Speaker 1: taught me how to write songs, and writing songs taught
- 6:38Speaker 1: me how to tell stories. So it kind of worked
- 6:39Speaker 1: out like that. If that makes any sense. Roundabout answer
- 6:43Speaker 1: to a very easy question of yours, I hope that helped.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Let's uh, let's check in with the four to one.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Oh ao beer Jake.
- 6:54Speaker 5: This is Neil from the four one oh aka four
- 6:57Speaker 5: one zero Needles.
- 6:58Speaker 4: You can find me on the igs.
- 6:59Speaker 3: What the fuck look, bro? Armored?
- 7:02Speaker 4: We got to talk about Armored?
- 7:03Speaker 2: Dude?
- 7:04Speaker 3: That shit. Man.
- 7:06Speaker 4: I don't usually re listen to podcasts, but I fucking
- 7:10Speaker 4: have listened to each episode of Armored about six times.
- 7:13Speaker 4: I annoy the fuck out of people in my recommendations
- 7:16Speaker 4: for it, and I need another goddamn season.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Bro.
- 7:18Speaker 2: It's been like two years.
- 7:20Speaker 4: That shit is fucking amazing. Not the Disgracedland isn't.
- 7:24Speaker 3: But dude, Armored, Oh my god, man, yo, keep doing
- 7:30Speaker 3: that shit.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Give me another season?
- 7:33Speaker 3: Just please, please, bro.
- 7:35Speaker 4: I know there's not too many, like you know, arm
- 7:37Speaker 4: robbery stories out there, or you can unsolve shit, but.
- 7:41Speaker 3: God damn it, wait a thousand days of Armored.
- 7:45Speaker 4: I'll be in touch with Audio Chuck if they approve heard.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Yes, Nils, please contact Audio Chuck. Hit him up, hit
- 7:53Speaker 1: up Ashley Flowers, hit her up on Instagram, let him
- 7:55Speaker 1: know you're looking for another season Armored. I'm not saying
- 7:57Speaker 1: I do it. I'm pretty busy, but I entertain it
- 8:01Speaker 1: if it was interesting enough. And for those of you
- 8:02Speaker 1: who don't know what Neil here is talking about, Armored
- 8:05Speaker 1: is a limited series I did in collaboration with crime
- 8:09Speaker 1: junkies Ashley Flowers and Audio Chuck, her company Audio Chuck
- 8:12Speaker 1: on armored truck robberies. I'm not sure why they asked
- 8:16Speaker 1: me to do it. Maybe because I'm from Boston and
- 8:18Speaker 1: Boston's known for its armored truck robberies.
- 8:22Speaker 4: Neil.
- 8:23Speaker 1: If you need to fix though, I might recommend the
- 8:25Speaker 1: following Armored heist movies to watch, which you've probably seen
- 8:28Speaker 1: but are worth a rewatch. The Friends of Eddie Coyle.
- 8:31Speaker 1: One of my favorite Boston crime movies of all time,
- 8:34Speaker 1: The Town ben Affleck John Ham, heavily inspired by the
- 8:37Speaker 1: Friends of Eddie Coyle and of course, probably the greatest
- 8:40Speaker 1: heist movie of all time in my opinion anyways, heat
- 8:44Speaker 1: so check those out to satiate your heist jones that
- 8:48Speaker 1: you get going on in lieu of any new Armored episodes,
- 8:52Speaker 1: and if you want to hear Armored, that podcast is
- 8:54Speaker 1: available everywhere. All right, back to this podcast, though, let's
- 8:58Speaker 1: check in with the three one four Hi date.
- 9:02Speaker 5: This is Jessica from the three one four Saint Louis, Missouri.
- 9:07Speaker 5: You You're podcast was actually the first podcast I ever
- 9:10Speaker 5: listened to. I love it. I love it still. I
- 9:15Speaker 5: dove right in with the big blurred episode, so quite
- 9:19Speaker 5: to start. But I love the way you tell the stories.
- 9:25Speaker 5: Your voice is great too, but just the creative way
- 9:30Speaker 5: that you and your team come together to write the stories.
- 9:33Speaker 3: So it's not just giving us the facts but actually, you.
- 9:39Speaker 5: Know, telling a narrative, which is lovely. So I really
- 9:42Speaker 5: appreciate that.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Keep on keeping on.
- 9:45Speaker 5: I love the show all right, good care.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Hell, yes, Jessica, happy to hear Disgraceland turn you on
- 9:51Speaker 1: a podcast. Thank you for the props. I appreciate you
- 9:54Speaker 1: mentioning the team that works on the show. We've got
- 9:57Speaker 1: to see you, guys, know, we've got to You know,
- 9:59Speaker 1: you only hear my voice on these episodes, on the
- 10:02Speaker 1: scripted episodes, the full the real episodes of Disgraceland.
- 10:05Speaker 2: But we've got anywhere from five.
- 10:07Speaker 1: To ten people working on any one episode of Disgraceland
- 10:10Speaker 1: at a time, and believe me, we need them all
- 10:12Speaker 1: to make these puppies hit the way that I want
- 10:14Speaker 1: them to hit. So I'm gonna use your praise, Jessica,
- 10:17Speaker 1: as an opportunity to praise as a team here at
- 10:19Speaker 1: Double Elvis for all the smart, hard and creative hustle
- 10:23Speaker 1: that they're putting into making me sound good every week.
- 10:25Speaker 1: So thanks to Double Elvis. And so you know, Jessica,
- 10:28Speaker 1: you might not know, but Double Elvis produces a lot
- 10:30Speaker 1: of shows that I'm not a part of that my
- 10:33Speaker 1: voice is not a part of. I executive produced them.
- 10:35Speaker 1: But you might want to check out about a Girl.
- 10:37Speaker 1: We've got a new show called Sound of Our Town
- 10:40Speaker 1: hosted by Will daily, which is kind of like a
- 10:43Speaker 1: musical travelogue into different cities throughout America. You know where
- 10:47Speaker 1: to see the best bands, what music venue is, what
- 10:49Speaker 1: music history makes up those towns. Sound of our town.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Check that out. That's a new one that's in season
- 10:55Speaker 1: right now. And about a Girl. That's another one that
- 10:57Speaker 1: you can check out, and some others too. Go to
- 10:59Speaker 1: double up dot FM and that's where you'll get all
- 11:03Speaker 1: the info. All right, I don't normally do this, but
- 11:07Speaker 1: it's worth it. After Jessica called in with that voicemail above,
- 11:10Speaker 1: she called right back with another. It's super short and
- 11:13Speaker 1: it's super interesting, to say the least, So I'm going
- 11:15Speaker 1: to play that.
- 11:15Speaker 2: One real quick.
- 11:17Speaker 5: That's a lie again.
- 11:19Speaker 3: I forgot to.
- 11:19Speaker 5: Mention that I listen to your podcast while I'm at work,
- 11:24Speaker 5: which is giving massages to people. I'm also an aesthetician,
- 11:30Speaker 5: but obviously I can't listen when I'm doing facials. But yeah,
- 11:35Speaker 5: I listen kind of binge a bunch of my podcasts
- 11:40Speaker 5: while I'm rubbing people's bodies.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Have a great day, damn, Jessica. Amazing to hear a
- 11:52Speaker 2: little weird.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I'll be thinking about this the next time I get
- 11:54Speaker 1: a massage. I didn't know the massage therapist listened to
- 11:56Speaker 1: anything while they gave massages. I certainly didn't realize that
- 11:59Speaker 1: one I was when I'm getting a massage, I'm not thinking.
- 12:02Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not thinking about anything, really, I'm just
- 12:04Speaker 1: kind of zend out. So I guess it makes sense
- 12:07Speaker 1: that a massage therapists could have their earbudds in and
- 12:11Speaker 1: be listening to something. The thought of you listening to Disgraceland, though,
- 12:15Speaker 1: while massaging people is kind of hysterical. So thank you, Jessica.
- 12:20Speaker 1: All right, let's move on. If you've been listening to
- 12:22Speaker 1: these bonus episodes over the last few months, then you
- 12:24Speaker 1: know that I haven't been able to shut up about Fidlar. Fidlar.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I still have a hard time saying that instead of Fiddler.
- 12:30Speaker 1: So here's a voicemail relative to that from the eighth four.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Thanks you, Hey, Jake. My name is Ben and I
- 12:38Speaker 4: grew up in Los Angeles and I went to Hamilton
- 12:42Speaker 4: High School from two thousand and four to two thousand
- 12:46Speaker 4: and eight. In my graduating class was the band's the
- 12:52Speaker 4: lead guitarist of fid Lar and his brother younger brother
- 12:58Speaker 4: just a couple of years behind us, and I got
- 13:01Speaker 4: to watch this band or these guys kind of find
- 13:05Speaker 4: their way. And one day, I think it was in
- 13:09Speaker 4: the tenth grade, I was in piano class.
- 13:13Speaker 3: So our high.
- 13:13Speaker 4: School was Hamilton High School was had a music academy
- 13:18Speaker 4: Magnet that was really amazing program. And in my second
- 13:24Speaker 4: level piano class sat next to me a transfer student
- 13:27Speaker 4: by the name of Elvis Keene and I had did
- 13:31Speaker 4: know Elvis, and he is the lead singer or the
- 13:34Speaker 4: lead guitarist for Fiddler, and I got to know Elvis
- 13:39Speaker 4: and his brother pretty well over the years. Elvis's dad
- 13:44Speaker 4: was also in a punk rock band, so that's where
- 13:47Speaker 4: his infest business schoolances came from. But it was really
- 13:51Speaker 4: wild to see after he graduated high school and kind of,
- 13:57Speaker 4: you know, loosely keeping in touch of these people. All understand,
- 14:00Speaker 4: Fidlar shows up and I knew that Elvis was kind
- 14:04Speaker 4: of associated with it, but I didn't know how big
- 14:06Speaker 4: they were getting. I would travel. When I would be traveling,
- 14:09Speaker 4: I would see with fid Lar's shirts, and then eventually,
- 14:15Speaker 4: when I moved to Richmond, Virginia in two and nineteen,
- 14:20Speaker 4: the procession of Fiddler apparel and it just kept growing.
- 14:24Speaker 4: I kept seeing it everywhere and everywhere, So yeah, Fiddlar
- 14:30Speaker 4: awesome Dan, great, great guys. Never got to see any
- 14:34Speaker 4: of their shows live, unfortunately, but on YouTube.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Amazing stuff.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Dan.
- 14:40Speaker 1: I'm totally jealous that you get to be in on
- 14:42Speaker 1: the early days of this band, Fiddler. Thanks for the
- 14:46Speaker 1: backstory on Elvis. I knew that one of their dads
- 14:49Speaker 1: was an old punk dude a while back. I saw
- 14:52Speaker 1: that video that they did Wake Bake Skate for with
- 14:57Speaker 1: the dude from Parks and Rec blanking on his name,
- 15:00Speaker 1: and I think I was like, how'd they get that dude?
- 15:02Speaker 1: And then the answer, I think had something to do
- 15:05Speaker 1: with one of their dads being in TSOL. So I
- 15:09Speaker 1: kind of knew that, but I love the story. I
- 15:11Speaker 1: appreciate it. Nonetheless, if you run into those dudes, let
- 15:13Speaker 1: him know that I won't shut up about him.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Thanks Dan.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Stay in touch all right, guys. Great job on the voicemails.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Keep them coming six one seven nine oh six six
- 15:22Speaker 1: six three eight. Jessica's got me thinking, I want to
- 15:25Speaker 1: know what you guys do for work when you listen
- 15:27Speaker 1: to Disgraceland. For all you quiet quitters out there, I
- 15:30Speaker 1: hate that term, but anyways, let me know what job
- 15:33Speaker 1: you're not doing while listening to this show. Six one
- 15:36Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight. I'm gonna
- 15:38Speaker 1: take a quick break. I'll be back in just a
- 15:40Speaker 1: minute with your text and your DMS.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes, we are back.
- 16:04Speaker 1: So let's dive into some d ms on x formerly
- 16:09Speaker 1: known as Twitter, where we can be reached at Disgrace
- 16:12Speaker 1: Lamp Pod. We still have the same branding at Disgrace
- 16:15Speaker 1: Lamp Pod. Jay Smith three sixty hit me up saying
- 16:18Speaker 1: that we should check out that Woman's Got Me Drinking
- 16:21Speaker 1: a song by Shane McGown featuring Johnny Depp on guitar.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Why because we just featured Johnny Depp over in our
- 16:27Speaker 1: bad Land series. And Jay goes on to talk about
- 16:30Speaker 1: Johnny playing with Oasis, which I didn't know that, but
- 16:33Speaker 1: I did know that he played on one of those
- 16:35Speaker 1: Ryan Adams records that are like a lot, the one
- 16:37Speaker 1: that Mike Viola produced. Think it's self titled just Ryan Adams,
- 16:40Speaker 1: And I think I think that's someone Johnny Depp is on.
- 16:43Speaker 1: I think I think Johnny Depp can play man. He
- 16:46Speaker 1: can act, but he can play guitar as well and
- 16:48Speaker 1: drink wine. Apparently, and pass out in hotel rooms before
- 16:52Speaker 1: Hollywood Vampires kicks rock and Roll Baby Adam Maglioni shouts
- 16:56Speaker 1: out our Rick James episode in Rick's relationship with the band.
- 17:00Speaker 1: This on Twitter as well, he talks about the band
- 17:03Speaker 1: up in Canada, and this is in reference to Robbie
- 17:06Speaker 1: Robertson's recent passing, which I get to say hurt, but
- 17:10Speaker 1: I address this in our previous mini episode and on Instagram.
- 17:13Speaker 1: You want to hear my thoughts on Robbie's passing, you
- 17:15Speaker 1: can get them there. Matt White on Twitter as well,
- 17:18Speaker 1: Matt wants a Kiss episode. Do you guys want a
- 17:20Speaker 1: Kiss episode? I'm not sure that I do, nor am
- 17:23Speaker 1: I sure what the crime is to Motor the story
- 17:26Speaker 1: on Kiss? Let me know what you guys know on Kiss?
- 17:29Speaker 1: Maybe there's something there is there something there involving Detroit.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Now that I just said motor it's Motor City. It's
- 17:35Speaker 1: in my head. There's got to be something with Kiss.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Let me know, Kiss Heads Kiss, Army, get at me
- 17:41Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Where's the angle on the Kiss story? The Kiss episode
- 17:46Speaker 1: that you guys want me to do? Let me know,
- 17:48Speaker 1: all right, let's Let's get into some Facebook messages here
- 17:52Speaker 1: as well. David Moon on Facebook rights, Hey, Jake moon
- 17:56Speaker 1: Man from down Under here. I'm a week or so behind,
- 17:58Speaker 1: but feel I have to wait in on the subject
- 18:01Speaker 1: of greatest pop duet performances. It's possible I could be
- 18:04Speaker 1: coming from a patriotic standpoint here and shouting out Australia,
- 18:08Speaker 1: but I honestly think Where the Wild Roses Grow by
- 18:11Speaker 1: Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue has to be in the conversation.
- 18:14Speaker 1: It's a sinister, sexy, melancholic masterpiece of pop. I can't
- 18:19Speaker 1: really think of a more surprising collaboration that breathed life
- 18:22Speaker 1: into two seemingly disperate careers and the result is quite amazing. Anyways,
- 18:27Speaker 1: big fan, love the skill and passion you and the
- 18:30Speaker 1: team obviously have. Raka Rola, David, great message. I don't
- 18:34Speaker 1: know this song, but I love Nick Cave and I
- 18:36Speaker 1: love Kylie Minogue, so I should. And I'm gonna go
- 18:39Speaker 1: check this out and I will report back to you
- 18:41Speaker 1: next week on my thoughts, or maybe I'll just hit
- 18:43Speaker 1: you up in the Facebook app. Either way, thanks for
- 18:45Speaker 1: reaching out. I appreciate it. Also on Facebook, Aaron Nicole writes, Hey, Jake,
- 18:50Speaker 1: my name is Aaron from The four one nine. Just
- 18:52Speaker 1: discovered your podcast about a month ago.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Love it.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Listen to it all day at work.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Aeron, What do you do at work? Let me know.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Eron goes on to say, listening to Graham Parsons the
- 19:01Speaker 1: extra episode for an easy going watch on Netflix. F
- 19:05Speaker 1: is for Family, It's hilarious. I don't know what that is, Aaron.
- 19:07Speaker 1: I don't know what F is for Family is, but
- 19:09Speaker 1: I will look into that. All right, Let's do another
- 19:14Speaker 1: one here, This one from Curtis Gallipo on Facebook, who
- 19:19Speaker 1: writes in to introduce himself, says, Curtis from Connecticut. What
- 19:24Speaker 1: makes me me is a variety in order, my eleven
- 19:28Speaker 1: year old daughter, Sophia, my family, my various Fender guitars, ukulele.
- 19:32Speaker 1: I just bought a steel guitar. I'm kind of scared
- 19:34Speaker 1: to play because I have no idea what the fuck
- 19:36Speaker 1: I'm doing. Mountain biking. I ride a Cannondale and then
- 19:39Speaker 1: unfortunately work. Thank you for the Fire podcast on both channels.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Some make me laugh, others teach me shit I did
- 19:46Speaker 1: not know. Uh listen, Curtis, awesome, awesome to hear from you. Dude,
- 19:51Speaker 1: appreciate it. I love hearing what makes you guys? You guys,
- 19:54Speaker 1: and I love getting to know you a little bit.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 19:58Speaker 1: You can leave a voicemail, you can send me a text,
- 20:00Speaker 1: or you can hit me up on Facebook like Curtis here,
- 20:02Speaker 1: or on Twitter or Instagram or anywhere and introduce yourselves.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Guys.
- 20:06Speaker 1: All right, let's check in with Let's do another Facebook
- 20:08Speaker 1: one here, this one from Caleb Clark, who writes in Dude,
- 20:12Speaker 1: the Ariana Grande episode was intense.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Loved it.
- 20:16Speaker 1: You were really skilled at capturing the imagination with your
- 20:18Speaker 1: sound effects and music.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Love it.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Will you please do an episode of my favorite band,
- 20:21Speaker 1: The Smashing Pumpkins. They have an intense backstory. I even
- 20:25Speaker 1: have a Pumpkins tattoo on my ass. Poor decision when
- 20:27Speaker 1: I was eighteen still stands though. Thank you so much
- 20:30Speaker 1: for your hard work. Love to listen. Thanks Caleb. Yeah, man,
- 20:34Speaker 1: I'd be down to do a Smashing Pumpkins episode again.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Back to the crime issue, what is it? They don't
- 20:39Speaker 1: strike me as having any true crime in their backstory,
- 20:43Speaker 1: but yeah, I can relate to the shitty tattoo thing
- 20:46Speaker 1: I got one on my own. It's not a Smashing
- 20:48Speaker 1: Pumpkins tattoo, god damn it. But it is a tribal
- 20:53Speaker 1: ankle tattoo. And you know, it's good work. The tattoo's
- 20:59Speaker 1: a good tattoo. It's just a fucking ankle tattoo, which
- 21:04Speaker 1: seemed like a good idea back when I was eighteen
- 21:07Speaker 1: and I could not wait to get a tattoo. But
- 21:11Speaker 1: in retrospect, the placement and you know, it's funny. We
- 21:16Speaker 1: were watching my wife and I when Portlandia came out.
- 21:19Speaker 1: We were watching I think it was the first episode. Yeah,
- 21:23Speaker 1: it's the first episode where they have that big set
- 21:25Speaker 1: piece musical thing where they're talking about there's a song
- 21:28Speaker 1: the Dream of the Nineties, and my wife had a
- 21:32Speaker 1: joke that the Dream of the nineties was alive on
- 21:35Speaker 1: my ankle in the form of a travel tattoo.
- 21:37Speaker 2: And we still reference it.
- 21:38Speaker 1: I don't know why I'm telling you that not that interesting,
- 21:40Speaker 1: but hey, thought i'd share. Okay, all right, you know
- 21:43Speaker 1: how to share with me? Hit me up at disgrace
- 21:45Speaker 1: Lampod on Facebook, on Twitter. I want to know where
- 21:47Speaker 1: your shitty tattoos are. Let me know what tattoos do.
- 21:50Speaker 1: You have that you regret at disgrace lampod six one
- 21:53Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Let's do some texts.
- 22:00Speaker 1: From the three three Oh. Hey, Jake David here from
- 22:03Speaker 1: the three three Oho. I would like to suggest the
- 22:05Speaker 1: idea of a musical generation series. It would examine the
- 22:08Speaker 1: children of musical icons you feature. I would love a
- 22:11Speaker 1: follow up to Hank Williams. It's about Hank two and three,
- 22:14Speaker 1: John Bonham's son, Jason, Danny Harrison, Sean and Julian Lennon,
- 22:18Speaker 1: Johnny Cash's son and daughter and so on. Huge influence
- 22:21Speaker 1: from the parents adding their voice and molding it to
- 22:24Speaker 1: play in their moment, and how these children carry the torch.
- 22:26Speaker 1: There are a lot of very interesting layers to this
- 22:28Speaker 1: and I think it's got a lot of eggs, could
- 22:30Speaker 1: really grow into something. Thanks for all you do. Love
- 22:32Speaker 1: the shows and the amazing craft care you bring to
- 22:35Speaker 1: each episode. Cheers from all of us in the three
- 22:37Speaker 1: three oh. Thanks three to three to zero. Appreciate the
- 22:40Speaker 1: craft and care that you brought to that message. Great idea.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Don't know that I can take on another series right now,
- 22:46Speaker 1: but perhaps there's some way there's something here. It feels
- 22:50Speaker 1: like there's something here, something to get into, appreciate it.
- 22:54Speaker 1: I don'tant to think about it. And maybe I'll have
- 22:55Speaker 1: some news. I don't know, maybe something will pop. Who knows?
- 22:58Speaker 1: Three three oh from the nine My two cents about
- 23:02Speaker 1: the Lizo drama. Heye jake, I'm say okay, hold on
- 23:04Speaker 1: the Lizo drama for those who missed the bonus excuse
- 23:08Speaker 1: me for those who missed the mini episode this week.
- 23:11Speaker 1: The Lizo drama has to do with the allegations by
- 23:14Speaker 1: Lizzo's team, some of her dancers alleging that Lizzo sexually
- 23:18Speaker 1: harassed them at a strip club in Amsterdam, or I
- 23:21Speaker 1: should say a sex show in Amsterdam. And there are
- 23:25Speaker 1: some other allegations that from her team that Lizzo was
- 23:29Speaker 1: body shaming them, which is the height of all irony.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Makes no sense.
- 23:35Speaker 1: So anyways, we get this text here from the nine
- 23:39Speaker 1: to five to one. My two cents about the Lizo drama.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Heye Jake, I'm a seamstress in La seamstress for the band.
- 23:44Speaker 1: I added that, and I worked for a designer who
- 23:46Speaker 1: a few years back made some custom performance costumes for Lizzo,
- 23:50Speaker 1: and they poured their heart and souls into making these beautiful,
- 23:53Speaker 1: well made costumes for Lizzo just to have been completely
- 23:55Speaker 1: shit on by her and her team.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Damn all right, I'm not going to read.
- 24:00Speaker 1: The rest of this cause it's uh, you know, it's
- 24:04Speaker 1: all alleged. But anyways, Uh, what do you guys think
- 24:08Speaker 1: of this Lizzo thing? Let me know six one seven
- 24:10Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight. The story's nuts.
- 24:12Speaker 1: I want to hear from you guys, your thoughts on it.
- 24:14Speaker 1: The irony is just too rich. Let's do a couple
- 24:18Speaker 1: more texts here. Last week we were talking about what
- 24:22Speaker 1: are you listening to after work when you're cracking a beer?
- 24:25Speaker 2: It's a specific ritual, you know what I mean? I really,
- 24:29Speaker 2: I really fucking enjoy it.
- 24:31Speaker 1: I have my whole life I'm sure you guys do
- 24:34Speaker 1: as well post work. Crack of brew cuts from the
- 24:36Speaker 1: five to three to oh says Guns n' Roses, Paradise City,
- 24:39Speaker 1: Katrina and the Waves, Walking on Sunshine, The Doors, La Woman,
- 24:43Speaker 1: John Party, Heartache, Medication all Right, John Party, Motley Crue,
- 24:47Speaker 1: Kickstart My Heart, just to name a few great lists.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Five to three to zero love It. What are you
- 24:53Speaker 2: guys listening to at the end of the day? Let
- 24:54Speaker 2: me know. Let's see a couple.
- 24:56Speaker 1: More here, five oho nine rights in, Hey, Jake, Greetings
- 24:59Speaker 1: from Jill of the five oh nine have been a
- 25:01Speaker 1: Disgraceland and bad Lands listeners since their first episodes. As requested,
- 25:06Speaker 1: here are some pop rock duets, but I decided to
- 25:09Speaker 1: shout out three from the eighties. You get the Look
- 25:11Speaker 1: by Prince and Sheena Easton, I Knew you were Waiting
- 25:14Speaker 1: by George Michael and Aretha Franklin, and my personal fave,
- 25:17Speaker 1: good Times by Inexcess in Jimmy Barnes, which was on
- 25:22Speaker 1: the Lost Boys soundtrack.
- 25:23Speaker 2: I vaguely remember that. I gotta go back and listen
- 25:26Speaker 2: to the Lost Boys soundtrack.
- 25:28Speaker 1: I listened to all these. I don't remember the George
- 25:29Speaker 1: Michael and Aretha Franklin. I mean, I know, I know
- 25:31Speaker 1: they do edit. I just don't remember that tune. And
- 25:34Speaker 1: of course I remember the Prince and the Sheena Easton
- 25:36Speaker 1: won great, great great Rex here five oh nine, sending
- 25:40Speaker 1: me back to the eighties, which is always a welcome
- 25:44Speaker 1: thing to do.
- 25:45Speaker 2: All right, I'm.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Kind of, you know, half reading these texts here while
- 25:48Speaker 1: I'm talking to you guys. Let's do one more here
- 25:51Speaker 1: nine seven eight, rights, saying, Hey, Jake, this is Jack
- 25:53Speaker 1: from Somerville. You were asking about best songs to Unwind too,
- 25:56Speaker 1: and I wanted to say, you can't do better than
- 25:58Speaker 1: that smooth jazz fusion cheese that is Hey nineteen by
- 26:02Speaker 1: Steely Dan. Bonus points if you're mixing a drink while
- 26:05Speaker 1: you got it on. All right, good talk, see you
- 26:07Speaker 1: out there. Uh yeah, I hear this Hey nineteen. I
- 26:11Speaker 1: like Hay nineteen. Hey, I like Steely Dan. Now well,
- 26:13Speaker 1: I can't believe I just said that publicly, but I do.
- 26:17Speaker 1: But if I'm gonna put a one Steely Dan track
- 26:20Speaker 1: on too Unwine Too, it's gonna be dirty work in
- 26:25Speaker 1: the number one slot and my old school in the
- 26:28Speaker 1: number two slot. There you go, an informed opinion from
- 26:32Speaker 1: yours truly on Steely Dan. You never thought it would happen.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Needed to di I all right, um, yeah, you know
- 26:38Speaker 1: the number six one seven nine O six six six
- 26:41Speaker 1: three eight. Hit me with your text, hit me with
- 26:43Speaker 1: your voicemails, hit me at disgrace, slam pod on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook,
- 26:47Speaker 1: and TikTok, and I shall get back to you, perhaps
- 26:50Speaker 1: even in one of these episodes. Gonna take a quick
- 26:53Speaker 1: break and we'll be back with your recommendations shortly. All right,
- 27:12Speaker 1: all right, all right, the recommendations part. This is the
- 27:14Speaker 1: recommendation's part, the part where we recommend the things that
- 27:17Speaker 1: need recommending, the recommendations part what I've been listening to.
- 27:19Speaker 1: So Robbie Robertson died, and it was sad, But in
- 27:23Speaker 1: these instances I try to remember that, Yes, of course,
- 27:27Speaker 1: it is a bummer when anyone dies, but this isn't
- 27:31Speaker 1: like Prince dying or Tom Petty. I mean, those guys
- 27:34Speaker 1: were older, but they definitely died too soon, and they did.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Not live their full lives.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Robbie Robertson was not young, and Robbie Robertson did live
- 27:44Speaker 1: a full life, a great life. Not the Prince and
- 27:46Speaker 1: Tom Petty did not. But again different circumstances. Robbie Robertson
- 27:50Speaker 1: lived out his life as one of the greatest rock
- 27:51Speaker 1: and roll lives a person can live.
- 27:54Speaker 2: So I'm not that sad. It's not like I knew
- 27:57Speaker 2: the guy.
- 27:58Speaker 1: But I was sad, a little sad, And I think
- 28:01Speaker 1: my sadness I was thinking about it. Where does it
- 28:03Speaker 1: come from?
- 28:04Speaker 2: You know?
- 28:05Speaker 1: And I think it comes from the emotion in the music.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Of the band, and of course Robbie Robertson dies. You're
- 28:12Speaker 1: on Instagram, you start to hear a bunch of their songs,
- 28:14Speaker 1: you start listening to their stuff on purpose. You know,
- 28:18Speaker 1: these songs Across the Great Divide, the Night they drove
- 28:21Speaker 1: Little Dixie Down. These songs are steeped in deep, deep
- 28:25Speaker 1: resonant emotion and set to the death of one of
- 28:28Speaker 1: their songwriters. Can make it guy, you know, can make
- 28:31Speaker 1: a guy tear up?
- 28:32Speaker 2: I almost did, but I didn't.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Like I said, I didn't know Robbie Robertson, and I'm
- 28:36Speaker 1: sure most of you did not either. But I'm also
- 28:38Speaker 1: sure that, like me, a lot of you watched The
- 28:40Speaker 1: Last Waltz an infinite amount of time. So there's a
- 28:44Speaker 1: familiality with Robbie that is intense. And when he died,
- 28:48Speaker 1: I went back, and of course I watched some of
- 28:49Speaker 1: the Last Walls after hearing about his death, and was
- 28:52Speaker 1: no less emotionally walloped by it than I was when
- 28:55Speaker 1: I saw it for the very first time. And that's
- 28:57Speaker 1: because of the songs, his songs, the band's songs, and
- 29:01Speaker 1: Robbie Robertson's playing. The earnestness of everyone in the band,
- 29:06Speaker 1: not just Robbie, it's it's just something to see.
- 29:09Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know what else to say.
- 29:12Speaker 1: I said a lot you can hear it in the
- 29:14Speaker 1: mini episode, and I said some stuff on Instagram as well,
- 29:17Speaker 1: But you know, Garth Hutson incredibly the only one left
- 29:20Speaker 1: play on Garth. This is all a long way of
- 29:22Speaker 1: me recommending you watch Robbie Robertson in The Last Waltz.
- 29:26Speaker 1: If you have not already for whatever reason. Maybe you're young,
- 29:29Speaker 1: maybe you've never heard of it, maybe you don't like
- 29:31Speaker 1: the band for some reason, check out The Last Waltz. Whatever,
- 29:34Speaker 1: whatever your reason for not watching it, that is fine.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Just watch it. It's so fucking good. If you're into
- 29:39Speaker 1: rock and roll, it's a musty. For no other reason
- 29:43Speaker 1: then to just watch Robbie Robertson smoke Eric Clapton.
- 29:46Speaker 2: But that's another story, all right. What else am I
- 29:48Speaker 2: listening to?
- 29:49Speaker 1: Well, I'm listening to another musician featured in the Last Waltz,
- 29:53Speaker 1: Muddy Waters, because one of our listeners, Robin Cave on Instagram,
- 29:58Speaker 1: hit me up, Robin put together this killer Muddy Waters playlist.
- 30:03Speaker 1: I haven't been able to stop listening to it. If
- 30:05Speaker 1: you're interested in Muddy Waters, you're interested in the blues,
- 30:09Speaker 1: or in an artist who perhaps influenced Robbie Robertson, then
- 30:12Speaker 1: go to Spotify and search Muddy for Jake. That's the
- 30:16Speaker 1: name of the playlist, Muddy for Jake. It's great, spans
- 30:20Speaker 1: his whole career. It's got a bunch of mid career
- 30:22Speaker 1: stuff that I never even knew existed. It's fucking great.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Thank you, Robin, I appreciate it. All right, what are
- 30:28Speaker 1: you guys listening to? What music related content are you watching?
- 30:31Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight
- 30:34Speaker 1: To let me know, I'm going to take a quick break,
- 30:36Speaker 1: drink some tea.
- 30:37Speaker 2: Back after this.
- 30:51Speaker 1: All right, let's recap, shall we. Number one, Part one
- 30:55Speaker 1: of the notorious Big Rear Release is the latest episode
- 30:58Speaker 1: of Disgrace Slam that is in your feeds right now.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Number two over in the bad Lands Feed, we are
- 31:03Speaker 1: rolling along with season eight and a brand new episode
- 31:06Speaker 1: on Sigourney Weaver.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Remember you gotta go to.
- 31:08Speaker 1: The bad Lands feed and subscribe there to follow that
- 31:11Speaker 1: show and to get those episodes. Number three next week
- 31:13Speaker 1: in the disgraced Land Feed. You guessed it. Part two
- 31:15Speaker 1: of the notorious Big where we specifically get into his murder,
- 31:19Speaker 1: a murder which twenty six years later remains unsolved. But
- 31:21Speaker 1: you know, if you read between my lines, I'm pretty
- 31:23Speaker 1: sure I cracked the case.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Number four.
- 31:24Speaker 1: My number is six one seven nine oh six six
- 31:27Speaker 1: six three eight. Call me on the telephone or text
- 31:30Speaker 1: me right now.
