- 0:32Hello, everyone, and welcome to the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:34Podcast. I'm Scott King. Thrilled today to be
- 0:37joined by a very special guest, Simon Nazarian,
- 0:40executive vice president and chief digital and technology
- 0:42officer with City of Hope. Simon, how are
- 0:44you doing? Thanks so much for joining us.
- 0:46I'm doing great. Thanks.
- 0:48I appreciate you, inviting me and, happy holidays.
- 0:52Of course. Happy holidays to you. We're just
- 0:53talking. We both gotta do a little bit
- 0:55of shopping we, noted before the show. So
- 0:57hopefully we'll do that later. But for now,
- 0:59we got a lot of kinda big trending
- 1:01topics in in health care to dive into.
- 1:03But even before we do that, Simon, do
- 1:05you mind sharing just a little bit about
- 1:06your your background and your work in health
- 1:08care?
- 1:09Oh,
- 1:11I would love to.
- 1:13Let's see. I've been in health care since,
- 1:152008,
- 1:17where I joined Kaiser Permanente
- 1:20as
- 1:22a chief architect for one of the regions
- 1:24and then grew into regional
- 1:27technology officer for our care delivery.
- 1:30From there,
- 1:31you know, I joined, McKinsey and Company,
- 1:34focusing on core technology enablement,
- 1:37for health care practice.
- 1:39So, payer provider, pharma, biotech, etcetera,
- 1:43and,
- 1:44really helped,
- 1:45develop the that team for,
- 1:47execution.
- 1:49And then I had an opportunity
- 1:50to join Optum as the chief information officer
- 1:53for Optum Health
- 1:55and, was,
- 1:56really able to,
- 1:58focus on,
- 2:00taking,
- 2:02Optum as a holding company into more of
- 2:04an operating company,
- 2:06by bringing all the technology organization on the
- 2:08one arm, focusing on value based care and
- 2:11all the things that goes along with it.
- 2:13And,
- 2:14then I had the, you know, good fortune
- 2:16and opportunity to join City of Hope as,
- 2:19the chief, Deshauna technology officer focusing,
- 2:23specifically on, you know, technology transformation,
- 2:26health care transformation,
- 2:28to,
- 2:29really,
- 2:30drive our mission here at City of Hope.
- 2:33Throughout my career, I've also focused across multiple
- 2:36industries,
- 2:37which really helps me in my role within
- 2:40health care as well. And I'm excited to
- 2:42pull on those experience and expertise in order
- 2:45to,
- 2:46really help
- 2:48our patients and providers
- 2:50during this journey.
- 2:52Well, thanks so much for sharing all the
- 2:53details about your journey in in health care,
- 2:55Simon. It sounds like it's been a great
- 2:56one.
- 2:57You you know, there's there's so much going
- 2:59on always in health care. It's certainly not
- 3:01gonna die down for the holidays, but I'm
- 3:03just curious, what opportunities
- 3:05and headwinds do you have your eye on
- 3:06right now?
- 3:08Well, I mean, you know, health care is
- 3:11really, at an inflection point
- 3:13as we speak. So for the first time,
- 3:16you know, we have the data, the computing
- 3:18power, and the tools like AI, to really
- 3:20meaningfully accelerate,
- 3:22you know, how discovery is turning to better
- 3:24care for our patients.
- 3:26And at the same time, we're dealing with,
- 3:29financial pressure, workforce challenges,
- 3:31and, you know, growing cyber risks.
- 3:34So, the question really isn't, whether we innovate,
- 3:38it's,
- 3:39how do we responsibly,
- 3:41how we do it responsibly and at scale.
- 3:44Right?
- 3:46Yeah. Absolutely. You know, I've actually just talked
- 3:49to some COOs of some systems,
- 3:52about cybersecurity yesterday.
- 3:54My question for you is, do you think
- 3:56with all the use cases we're hearing about
- 3:58AI, are systems maybe in terms of technology
- 4:02a little maybe too concerned with AI and
- 4:04kind of forgetting to invest in cybersecurity? Is
- 4:06that something you're seeing or or think?
- 4:09You know, most of my colleagues and everywhere,
- 4:12you know, we talk to, we always take
- 4:13security at heart and security first when we
- 4:16wanna,
- 4:17you know, approach, anything we wanna build and
- 4:19develop
- 4:20and deploy.
- 4:21Right? PHI and PII are very important to
- 4:25us, and we wanna make sure that it's
- 4:26built into. So most of the organization
- 4:29that I I speak to are my colleagues.
- 4:31You know, we, really have it at the
- 4:33center and on top of our mind.
- 4:35No. I think it's a great idea. And
- 4:37something else I wanted to ask you, Simon,
- 4:39is how are you thinking about growth and
- 4:41adding value to your organization?
- 4:45You know, I I don't think about, but
- 4:47when I think about growth, I don't think
- 4:49about technology for technology's
- 4:51sake.
- 4:52You know? I think about impact.
- 4:55You know? If additional investment, you know, doesn't
- 4:57improve patient outcomes, expand access,
- 5:00or make life better for the clinicians, you
- 5:02know, we have to,
- 5:04make sure we take a close look at
- 5:05it, you know, and possibly take a look
- 5:07at that, you know, return on opportunity.
- 5:10But, our focus is really on removing friction,
- 5:15and connecting systems,
- 5:17you know, automating the mundane
- 5:19and letting our clinicians and researchers spend more
- 5:22time on patients and science.
- 5:26Simon, what are some of the things you
- 5:28maybe ask yourself
- 5:29about
- 5:30before you invest in and implement a new
- 5:33technology to kind of evaluate it?
- 5:37Well,
- 5:38you know, there are a number of things,
- 5:39that we have to take a look at.
- 5:41We talked about the return on investment or
- 5:44return on opportunity.
- 5:46Right? You look at, you know, what does
- 5:47it take to deploy,
- 5:49you know, and jump start it. You know,
- 5:51it's really, really important how to be on
- 5:53supported on an ongoing basis.
- 5:56You know, how does it integrate within our
- 5:59workflows and really support our technicians
- 6:02and, you know, accuracy and efficiency and how
- 6:05we monitor it. And if it's AI based,
- 6:07how do we govern it and, everything that
- 6:10goes along with our governance.
- 6:12And,
- 6:13you know,
- 6:14frankly, we just wanna make sure that, we're
- 6:17delivering impact
- 6:18with, whatever it is that we're building.
- 6:22What do you think is one risk or
- 6:24investment worth making this year?
- 6:30One risk ahead is absolutely worth taking is
- 6:32scaling AI in a thoughtful and governed way.
- 6:35Right?
- 6:36The bigger risk right now is standing still.
- 6:39Health care is really moving quickly,
- 6:42and organizations
- 6:43that don't learn how to operationalize
- 6:46AI responsibly,
- 6:47you know, will fall behind in care quality,
- 6:50research speed, and efficiency.
- 6:53The key is,
- 6:55you know, starting with real problems and building
- 6:57trust as you go.
- 7:00Where do you see the best opportunities for
- 7:03growth in the future?
- 7:06Great question.
- 7:07The biggest opportunities,
- 7:10to me,
- 7:11that's ahead, you know, set up the intersection
- 7:14of data, AI, and precision medicine.
- 7:17Right? As we connect with all of this
- 7:20clinical data with research insights,
- 7:23we can deliver more personalized care and move
- 7:26discoveries to patients much faster.
- 7:30I also see huge,
- 7:32potential in digital and virtual care models
- 7:35that, really extend care beyond the hospital
- 7:41innovation nationally.
- 7:45And Simon, the last thing I wanna ask
- 7:46you is, obviously, it takes great leadership to
- 7:49help invest in and implement
- 7:52AI usage and emerging tech across
- 7:55systems now with with everything we're seeing. My
- 7:57question for you is just how have you
- 7:59evolved,
- 8:00as a leader? How have you grown as
- 8:01a leader?
- 8:03I,
- 8:05you know, being in health care,
- 8:07you always put the patient at the center,
- 8:11and you look at how do you support
- 8:13the care teams
- 8:15as well as,
- 8:17the support teams outside of our four walls.
- 8:21Right? And you look at the patient holistically
- 8:23overall.
- 8:25Also, you know, with my teams, I have
- 8:28learned that,
- 8:30they can achieve amazing things when you, approach
- 8:33them with a problem to solve.
- 8:35You know, bring your minutes that this is
- 8:37what the problem we need to solve. Let's
- 8:38solve it together. And,
- 8:41it has done, great for me in that
- 8:43manner rather than just saying go do this
- 8:46or go do that.
- 8:47So by just really maintaining that focus on
- 8:50bringing my teams closer and the problem solving
- 8:53has really helped me evolve as a leader
- 8:55and I've become more of a,
- 8:58people person as well.
- 9:00Well, I think it's a great mindset as
- 9:01we see emerging tech, continue to evolve
- 9:04across health systems. And, Simon, thanks so much
- 9:06for your time. Thanks for joining us on
- 9:07the podcast. I thought it was a great
- 9:08conversation. I look forward to working with you
- 9:10again soon. Thank you so much.
