- 0:13Speaker 1: Monumental week in baseball. I mean, the reactions on social media,
- 0:19Speaker 1: reactions from people around the sport rejoicing. This could be
- 0:25Speaker 1: a new era in baseball for the Angels. We covered
- 0:28Speaker 1: it as breaking news on yesterday's show. We are going
- 0:31Speaker 1: to cover it again today with Sam Blum, who will
- 0:34Speaker 1: be a guest. And the Tarps Off crew felt like
- 0:39Speaker 1: they had a part in this. They show up, they
- 0:41Speaker 1: take their shirts off. And they say, sell the team. Well,
- 0:46Speaker 1: he listened. Goodbye, Artie, if you couldn't hear it from
- 1:04Speaker 1: the Tarps Off crew. It's fair. You guys get ripped, AJ,
- 1:09Speaker 1: as players for one bad game. What about 20 bad years?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Bye-bye, Artie. That's what they were saying. That's kind of
- 1:18Speaker 2: what everyone's saying right now, right? I mean, except for
- 1:20Speaker 2: people that were directly related to him. Who was it,
- 1:23Speaker 2: 11 straight losing seasons for the Angels? It's crazy. It's
- 1:27Speaker 2: crazy for a team. And honestly, that's a big market.
- 1:30Speaker 2: They want to be part of Los Angeles. But if
- 1:32Speaker 2: you go to Anaheim, there's really only one thing in Anaheim. Yes, sorry,
- 1:35Speaker 2: the Ducks. But then it's the Angels. They could be
- 1:37Speaker 2: the Padres in Anaheim. There's a lot of money in
- 1:40Speaker 2: Orange County. People used to love to go to Angels games.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I mean, go see the Rally Monkey. Go sit in
- 1:46Speaker 2: that club that was right behind home plate. That used
- 1:48Speaker 2: to be the biggest deal when the Angels were good.
- 1:51Speaker 2: And now it's just become like, okay, well, we can
- 1:53Speaker 2: get cheap tickets to the Angels, so we'll go watch
- 1:55Speaker 2: Mike Trout. To not take advantage of this market, to
- 2:00Speaker 2: not take advantage of the fact that they had the
- 2:03Speaker 2: two best players in the game for six years playing together.
- 2:06Speaker 2: It's good for Artie. He made some money. It was
- 2:11Speaker 2: bad for baseball. It was bad for baseball. And now, hopefully,
- 2:16Speaker 2: this next iteration of the Angels is going to move
- 2:20Speaker 2: in the right direction.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Mm-hmm. And in honor of this sale, we're going to
- 2:25Speaker 1: talk about something that Angels fans hopefully will be able
- 2:28Speaker 1: to taste again. We're going to spend 10 minutes and
- 2:31Speaker 1: charge the mound on the playoffs. So let's go over
- 2:37Speaker 1: playoff seating. Do we like the current format? I want
- 2:41Speaker 1: to show this Buster Olney tweet to kick this off.
- 2:44Speaker 1: As we had the Yankees and Red Sox battle this
- 2:46Speaker 1: past weekend, we talked about how maybe they kept Wilson
- 2:50Speaker 1: Contreras going to see if they could pass the Yankees.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Now it doesn't seem like that'll be the case. Other side,
- 2:54Speaker 1: you have the Phillies and the Cubs going back and
- 2:57Speaker 1: forth on their wildcard seating for the top two spots,
- 3:00Speaker 1: which represents who would get home field, but it's not
- 3:02Speaker 1: just that, right? So Buster said the playoff picture in
- 3:06Speaker 1: the American league is a classic example of why MLB
- 3:09Speaker 1: should recede in the playoffs round around as it stands. Now,
- 3:12Speaker 1: Tampa Bay would play the winner of the Red Sox
- 3:15Speaker 1: Yankees wildcard series. Those are the three best teams in
- 3:18Speaker 1: the American League. On the other side of the bracket,
- 3:21Speaker 1: the White Sox would play the winner of the Guardians
- 3:23Speaker 1: and Astros series, with one of those teams advancing to
- 3:27Speaker 1: the ALCS. So his point is that you have the
- 3:32Speaker 1: three best records getting rid of each other. AJ, do
- 3:35Speaker 1: you agree with Buster that we should seek changes here?
- 3:39Speaker 2: It's almost as if somebody has been talking about this
- 3:41Speaker 2: for like a week now, about how The White Sox
- 3:44Speaker 2: at least a week, if not more. Maybe Buster tuned
- 3:46Speaker 2: in to the show because I've been saying for a
- 3:50Speaker 2: couple weeks now that the White Sox, because they're the
- 3:53Speaker 2: two seed, are going to have an easier path than
- 3:55Speaker 2: the AL East on the other side, who's going to
- 3:56Speaker 2: have to beat each other up. to play the White
- 3:58Speaker 2: Sox and or the wildcard round winner, to me, the
- 4:03Speaker 2: division winner should be rewarded. Okay, the first two seeds, fine,
- 4:06Speaker 2: give them a bye. I don't have a problem with that.
- 4:09Speaker 2: In the wildcard, the division winner should be rewarded because
- 4:12Speaker 2: there should be some incentive for being a division winner. Now,
- 4:16Speaker 2: when it gets to the next round, I have no
- 4:17Speaker 2: problem that they want to reseed when it gets down
- 4:19Speaker 2: to the final four in each league because why is
- 4:22Speaker 2: it fair that the Rays and the Yankees or Red Sox,
- 4:24Speaker 2: who both will have a better record than the White
- 4:27Speaker 2: Sox at the end of the year, have to beat
- 4:29Speaker 2: up on each other before the White Sox and or
- 4:31Speaker 2: the Guardians and or Houston, as it sits right now,
- 4:34Speaker 2: would play each other to get a chance. It just
- 4:36Speaker 2: doesn't seem fair. But this is the way Rob Manfred
- 4:40Speaker 2: and his owners drew it up. This is the way
- 4:41Speaker 2: they like it. But I wish when they got to
- 4:43Speaker 2: the Final Four, they would do a reseeding. I think
- 4:47Speaker 2: the owners can get behind this because they sit there
- 4:49Speaker 2: and they go, we want the best series because the
- 4:52Speaker 2: best series go five games, seven games away. That's extra
- 4:55Speaker 2: cash in their pockets. They can get behind it. And
- 4:57Speaker 2: it's not about, to me, it's not about necessarily what's
- 5:01Speaker 2: fair and what's not fair. It's about making the regular
- 5:05Speaker 2: season matter. Okay, we're in. We're in. It doesn't matter.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Like if you have the best record, but you don't
- 5:11Speaker 2: have the buy, it's one of those things that, hey,
- 5:15Speaker 2: you know what? You can be rewarded for continuing to
- 5:18Speaker 2: play out the season. And I don't think we have
- 5:21Speaker 2: historically bad like issue with load management but you make
- 5:25Speaker 2: the regular season matter when you do that reseeding when
- 5:29Speaker 2: you get a team that gets the fifth seed they
- 5:31Speaker 2: don't have to play the number one seed type of thing.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Can we rack some tweets from fans replying to this
- 5:41Speaker 1: let's do a few in a row and then we
- 5:44Speaker 1: can look at the playoff bracket too also we did
- 5:46Speaker 1: a poll yesterday on our show should mlb reseed teams
- 5:49Speaker 1: after each postseason round 55% of you said yes. David
- 5:54Speaker 1: replied to that Buster tweet and said, every playoff or
- 5:57Speaker 1: tournament should be reseated. The whole point of regular seasons
- 6:00Speaker 1: is you gain an advantage in the postseason, and that
- 6:02Speaker 1: advantage should last the entire postseason, not just the first round.
- 6:08Speaker 1: What else you got for me? Yes, from Rick. Reseating
- 6:12Speaker 1: should always be the case when possible. NFL has it right.
- 6:18Speaker 2: They do. They definitely do. Well, no, that's not true
- 6:22Speaker 2: because the winner of the division still gets to host
- 6:25Speaker 2: a game. Remember 7-9 Seattle beat the Saints in the
- 6:29Speaker 2: Beastquake game? Remember they were 7-9 that year and they
- 6:32Speaker 2: had to host the Saints and they beat them in
- 6:34Speaker 2: the playoffs. So they don't recede until after the first round.
- 6:37Speaker 2: They give the division winner an advantage and then they recede.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Can we show the last one too? Because I think
- 6:44Speaker 1: you guys are going to disagree with this one. Zero
- 6:47Speaker 1: Drift said the fix for this would be to use
- 6:49Speaker 1: an NBA style of seating. Just go top six records AL,
- 6:53Speaker 1: top six records NL, and use that from the jump. Well,
- 6:57Speaker 1: then we're not rewarding divisions anymore.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I mean, that's what they're going to get to. Once
- 7:05Speaker 2: they add two new teams, expansion, they're going to get
- 7:08Speaker 2: to two 16-team leagues.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Yeah, but you can still have divisions in those leagues.
- 7:15Speaker 2: The NBA has divisions? You can't do this. NBA has
- 7:19Speaker 2: the East and the West, don't they?
- 7:20Speaker 1: Wait, but let me ask you guys.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Yeah, they have divisions.
- 7:24Speaker 1: But I don't think they mean anything. No, they don't
- 7:27Speaker 1: mean anything. For MLB, I think there's still meaning to
- 7:30Speaker 1: a division. I think it's cool to have that. Now,
- 7:33Speaker 1: when we have realignment, right, with 32 teams, you could
- 7:36Speaker 1: go top seeding, right, and do the NBA style. Or
- 7:40Speaker 1: let's say the playoff format stays the same here and
- 7:43Speaker 1: you still have six teams making it. You have... If
- 7:45Speaker 1: you have four divisions, you have four division winners and
- 7:48Speaker 1: two wild cards. The two wild cards don't get– they
- 7:50Speaker 1: would get the bottom two seats here. Or do you
- 7:56Speaker 1: like where the wild cards could be above everyone? I
- 7:58Speaker 1: mean that's up to you guys. That's what we're asking here.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Can the wild card seat for the realignment be above
- 8:05Speaker 1: the division winner?
- 8:07Speaker 2: No, it shouldn't be because you should be rewarded for
- 8:09Speaker 2: winning the division. Okay. And that's a rare case. It's
- 8:15Speaker 2: a rare case. I get it.
- 8:16Speaker 1: No, it's not.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Just because like this year, the American League East. This year,
- 8:21Speaker 2: there'll be two. Right. I don't think that's always going
- 8:27Speaker 2: to be how it is. I get it.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Yeah, but that happens frequently, Kratz.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Yeah, but not.
- 8:33Speaker 1: It does. When you'd have not three or not even
- 8:36Speaker 1: two most of the time, but you often will have
- 8:38Speaker 1: one team in the wildcard seat that's better than a
- 8:40Speaker 1: division winner. That's not uncommon. Let's look at the current
- 8:44Speaker 1: playoff picture. So we've got the Rays holding a bye
- 8:48Speaker 1: along with the White Sox. And then the path for
- 8:51Speaker 1: the Rays would be to go against. Wait, is this right?
- 8:55Speaker 2: No, that's not right. That's not right.
- 8:57Speaker 1: No.
- 8:59Speaker 2: No, that's flipped.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it's flipped. So the Rays would take on the
- 9:04Speaker 1: winner of the Yankees and the Red Sox. Yeah. And
- 9:07Speaker 1: then the White Sox would take on the winner of
- 9:09Speaker 1: the Astros and the Guardians.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Yes.
- 9:14Speaker 1: That's what we were talking about here.
- 9:17Speaker 2: That's what it could look like if they switched it.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Right. And then for the other one, again, I mean,
- 9:24Speaker 1: it would be the Brewers in the one seed taking
- 9:27Speaker 1: on the winner of the Phillies and Cubs, and then
- 9:30Speaker 1: the Dodgers as the two seed would take on the
- 9:32Speaker 1: winner of the Braves and the Padres. That one's more like, okay,
- 9:36Speaker 1: I mean, all those teams are pretty damn good.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Do you think they made these decisions because baseball isn't, okay,
- 9:43Speaker 2: you have a week to reseed and figure out your travel.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Like some of these series end, game three of the
- 9:49Speaker 2: wildcard series will end, and you're flying to the next
- 9:53Speaker 2: city and they don't want to have to make other
- 9:56Speaker 2: teams wait. Do you think that's why they do it?
- 10:01Speaker 2: say that again maybe game three game three of the
- 10:06Speaker 2: nl wild card series the two wild card series plays
- 10:10Speaker 2: and you're waiting to find out where you're going game
- 10:13Speaker 2: three is already done you're waiting you got to fly
- 10:16Speaker 2: the next day the other team flies and the other
- 10:18Speaker 2: direction because they thought if yeah but the one team's
- 10:22Speaker 2: sitting at home it's only the team that wins it
- 10:24Speaker 2: has to fly because the other team's at home the
- 10:27Speaker 2: top two seeds start at home yeah just just coordinating
- 10:31Speaker 2: travel with the team that wins they have to figure
- 10:35Speaker 2: out if they're going to in this case la or
- 10:39Speaker 2: they're going to milwaukee because if they win you know
- 10:42Speaker 2: what i mean I don't really care.
- 10:44Speaker 1: You didn't get the higher seed. So whatever you have
- 10:46Speaker 1: to do travel-wise, the higher seed gets to wait for
- 10:50Speaker 1: the team to come in.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, that's why you have a traveling secretary.
- 10:53Speaker 2: You have an assistant to the traveling secretary. I mean,
- 10:55Speaker 2: you have all these things. And besides, the hotel room
- 10:59Speaker 2: is already booked for each team. They do that stuff
- 11:01Speaker 2: well in advance. So, I mean, that to me shouldn't
- 11:04Speaker 2: be the issue. If they're worried about, oh, I have
- 11:08Speaker 2: to go to L.A. instead of Milwaukee, okay, fine. You
- 11:11Speaker 2: just fuel up the jet a little bit farther. It's
- 11:13Speaker 2: the same plane. You just put some more fuel on
- 11:15Speaker 2: that bitch and drive away. So why do they do
- 11:19Speaker 2: it this way when the other leagues don't? I think
- 11:23Speaker 2: it's more for the media. In what way? Honestly. Like
- 11:28Speaker 2: their travel? Mm-hmm. Or for Fox or TBS to advertise it?
- 11:37Speaker 2: I mean, they could just say Dodgers versus Lois Seed.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Whoever's first. Yeah. I mean, they do that in football.
- 11:44Speaker 2: They do in football. That's what I mean. Like there
- 11:45Speaker 2: has to be a reason they do it. Cause I
- 11:48Speaker 2: don't feel like, because this is their moneymaker. This is
- 11:50Speaker 2: the reason we added more teams. This is it for
- 11:54Speaker 2: more teams into the playoffs so that major league baseball
- 11:57Speaker 2: gets more money. I don't think it's just a, ah, whatever,
- 12:00Speaker 2: you know, this is how we'll do it. And there
- 12:02Speaker 2: has to be a reason.
- 12:04Speaker 1: There is a reason. Do you guys want to know
- 12:07Speaker 1: what it is?
- 12:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:09Speaker 1: They like a clean bracket.
- 12:13Speaker 2: You want a March Madness style bracket?
- 12:15Speaker 1: I'm not kidding. They were really into the bracket thing
- 12:17Speaker 1: on the marketing when I was there towards the end.
- 12:20Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 12:22Speaker 1: They like a bracket. You don't get a bracket.
- 12:30Speaker 2: So you can just have a graphic of a bracket
- 12:32Speaker 2: of where the teams are going to go and play?
- 12:33Speaker 2: That's a true thing?
- 12:35Speaker 1: I think that's part of it. I think that they
- 12:38Speaker 1: like it to traditionally be set up and then it's
- 12:40Speaker 1: a traditional bracket and you don't recede. I don't think
- 12:42Speaker 1: they're like, oh, we're hard and fast on this. We'll
- 12:44Speaker 1: never change this. But I do think that was part
- 12:47Speaker 1: of the mix here. I do know for a fact
- 12:49Speaker 1: that they were very into marketing the playoffs as a bracket.
- 12:52Speaker 1: It's a big thing. I'm sure they probably still do it.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I see it on the website. Obviously, I don't watch
- 12:57Speaker 1: the channel, but I'm sure they do it there. They
- 12:59Speaker 1: were big on promoting the bracket. I mean, we like
- 13:02Speaker 1: to show the bracket. Brackets are easy to comprehend.
- 13:05Speaker 2: I like the way it looks. 100%. But I also
- 13:09Speaker 2: think you should have the best series, the best teams
- 13:13Speaker 2: rewarded for having the best entire season. And I think
- 13:17Speaker 2: reseeding does that. NBA does it, right? NBA....
- 13:30Speaker 1: Well, I mean, you guys got to help me out.
- 13:31Speaker 1: I'm so confused. Yeah, we got the playing. We're like,
- 13:35Speaker 1: there's so much to give. We got the plan. We
- 13:37Speaker 1: got the curtain. We got the, there's so many freaking
- 13:39Speaker 1: made up terms, but they, the NBA did the, does
- 13:44Speaker 1: the NBA reseed?
- 13:45Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't think so. I think they
- 13:48Speaker 2: do a straight bracket. Right. So if one verse eight,
- 13:55Speaker 2: then yeah, they get the four or five.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Got it.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Okay. So NFL recedes, right? At some point. NBA doesn't.
- 14:06Speaker 1: I'm sure people in the comments are going to go crazy. Sorry,
- 14:09Speaker 1: I don't pay attention to the other sports as well
- 14:11Speaker 1: as I do baseball. But that's what we know. Kratz,
- 14:15Speaker 1: I think what people are seeing on the screen and
- 14:16Speaker 1: what we'll explain to the podcast audio crowd right now
- 14:20Speaker 1: is how I'm a little summer action with Fabletics, and
- 14:22Speaker 1: then you take us into fall and a little more layering.
- 14:26Speaker 2: And here in the East, I'm still gonna go to
- 14:28Speaker 2: the shore in the fall. I love the shore in September.
- 14:31Speaker 2: You come in from the beach, you throw on a
- 14:33Speaker 2: sweatshirt like this, it's light, it's breathable, but you know what?
- 14:37Speaker 2: It is so comfortable.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and for me, I love working out, but also
- 14:41Speaker 1: I'm getting more into tennis, paddle, little bit of pickleball,
- 14:45Speaker 1: all that. I want lightweight, breathable, comfortable, and affordable. Let's
- 14:50Speaker 1: talk about that. The discounts for Fabletics are massive when
- 14:54Speaker 1: you sign up as a VIP. Shop now at Fabletics.com
- 14:57Speaker 1: slash foul to get 70% to 80% off everything. When
- 15:01Speaker 1: you sign up as a new VIP, take a quick
- 15:03Speaker 1: style quiz. Be sure to select foul when prompted to
- 15:06Speaker 1: unlock this offer. This is a limited time offer, so
- 15:08Speaker 1: don't wait. Again, that's Fabletics.com slash foul for 70% to 80%
- 15:13Speaker 1: off everything as a new VIP. Did you guys... I mean,
- 15:16Speaker 1: I know you're not watching pitch by pitch, but see
- 15:18Speaker 1: the Pittsburgh Giants game on Tuesday and you had... Paul Skeens,
- 15:25Speaker 1: you know, giving up five runs, leaving early. Logan Webb
- 15:28Speaker 1: was crushed in that game. And then, of course, there's
- 15:32Speaker 1: comebacks on both sides, a walk-off on an infield error.
- 15:36Speaker 1: I mean, it had it all, A.J.
- 15:39Speaker 2: It was crazy. I remember I texted you all, I'm like, dang,
- 15:42Speaker 2: Skeens is getting whacked again. And then Logan Webb goes
- 15:45Speaker 2: out and outdoes him for getting whacked, so... It was
- 15:48Speaker 2: not a good night to pitch in Pittsburgh. The ball
- 15:50Speaker 2: was flying, and it was a wild end. You know
- 15:52Speaker 2: what the best part of this, best worst part of
- 15:54Speaker 2: this game was? When the game ended, I forget the
- 15:56Speaker 2: guy's name who made the error at the end, but
- 15:58Speaker 2: I think it was Koss. Is it K-O-S-S, Koss? Basabe
- 16:02Speaker 2: made the error. Basabe made the error, and Koss was
- 16:06Speaker 2: the shortstop. I believe his name was Koss. And the
- 16:08Speaker 2: poor Basabe guy was about to cry sitting there on
- 16:12Speaker 2: his knees. He made an unbelievable play, and he threw it,
- 16:15Speaker 2: and Devers didn't pick it. But then the Koss guy
- 16:18Speaker 2: was walking him off the field with his arm around
- 16:20Speaker 2: his shoulder, just consoling him. That was pretty awesome. That's
- 16:24Speaker 2: a good teammate right there. That's kind of what it's
- 16:26Speaker 2: all about. Good for you, Koss. I want to call
- 16:30Speaker 2: him carrying Koss, but I know that's not his name
- 16:31Speaker 2: because that's the wrestler guy, so I apologize.
- 16:35Speaker 1: But no, I'm with you. I saw that clip with
- 16:37Speaker 1: him walking.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Off with him. The ball was traveling, but I think
- 16:40Speaker 2: the Pirates scored their first 10 runs all on singles.
- 16:44Speaker 2: I don't think they had one extra base hit. And
- 16:47Speaker 2: then they gave it up. It was the back and
- 16:51Speaker 2: forth that we had the other night with the Red
- 16:54Speaker 2: Sox Mariners, except that game actually mattered. This game, both
- 16:59Speaker 2: teams are out of it. You don't see two all-stars
- 17:04Speaker 2: going at it against two lineups that have been up
- 17:07Speaker 2: and down and say, this will probably be 13 to 12.
- 17:13Speaker 1: And you know what? We haven't talked about the Tigers
- 17:15Speaker 1: much lately since– or sorry, the Pirates. But we'll bury
- 17:18Speaker 1: them at some point officially on a segment like we're
- 17:21Speaker 1: going to do later for the Tigers. But the mission
- 17:24Speaker 1: of being competitive in September failed. A little better this year,
- 17:29Speaker 1: but not good enough. Failed. Not good enough to be
- 17:32Speaker 1: talked about in September. Right? We're not talking about them.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Bullpen failed them.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Yes.
- 17:37Speaker 2: And I'm not talking Luke Weaver. I'm talking in the
- 17:38Speaker 2: first half it failed them, and then it led them
- 17:40Speaker 2: to this point. Well, they couldn't spend on everything. It's unfair.
- 17:46Speaker 2: We spent our $ 101 million, so that was it. We
- 17:52Speaker 2: couldn't add another $ 8 million reliever or two.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Pitchers that shoved. Gavin Williams, you're on the list. Seven innings,
- 18:02Speaker 1: two hits, one walk, 13 strikeouts for a Guardians team
- 18:06Speaker 1: that needs to pile some wins together. They beat the
- 18:09Speaker 1: Blue Jays. That one was a 6-1 final. I want
- 18:12Speaker 1: to throw in one more pitching performance that was just
- 18:14Speaker 1: pointed out by somebody in our chat, and I agreed.
- 18:17Speaker 1: I had it written down for around this time period.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Anyone see Freddy Peralta last night after the home run
- 18:24Speaker 1: from Francisco Lindor? Looks like he's starting to figure it
- 18:27Speaker 1: out with the Rays. Six innings, three hits, one run,
- 18:29Speaker 1: no walks, seven strikeouts. I didn't pay attention to this
- 18:34Speaker 1: in particular, but one of the commenters, Chris, said he
- 18:37Speaker 1: had a no-hitter after the first inning.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Freddie P doing it right. Got to the race, starting
- 18:43Speaker 2: to figure it out. Took a couple of starts. They're
- 18:46Speaker 2: starting to get him right. And he's pitched well his
- 18:48Speaker 2: last few times out. And yeah, I mean, when door
- 18:52Speaker 2: hit the lead off Homer, you're like, Oh, if you're racing,
- 18:53Speaker 2: you're thinking, Oh, here we go again. And then he
- 18:55Speaker 2: just went into nobody's touching me the rest of the way.
- 18:57Speaker 2: It was, it was pretty good to watch how he
- 19:00Speaker 2: was in control of that game. Trusting, trusting in what
- 19:03Speaker 2: they're working on takes a little bit of time. We
- 19:05Speaker 2: even set it on here. It's not going to be
- 19:07Speaker 2: an immediate turnaround. Like, Oh, well we fixed them. It's
- 19:11Speaker 2: just slowly progressing to being a guy that they can
- 19:16Speaker 2: count on in the postseason, possibly, if he continues this
- 19:19Speaker 2: through September.
- 19:20Speaker 1: I think certain teams need to evaluate what their pitching
- 19:23Speaker 1: changes look like from a pitching program perspective. I'm not
- 19:26Speaker 1: even talking about one particular pitching coach, but from Freddie
- 19:28Speaker 1: P to be a mess with the Mets and then
- 19:30Speaker 1: go to the Rays and pretty quickly clean it up.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Pointing out names, I'm just saying, are you sure you
- 19:35Speaker 1: guys made the right call? Mm-hmm. Do you remember growing
- 19:41Speaker 1: up and seeing that something was sold out and it
- 19:44Speaker 1: was literally sold out and you couldn't get a ticket?
- 19:46Speaker 2: Yes.
- 19:47Speaker 1: That's not a thing anymore.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Cried many times over that, Scott. But now we have SeatGeek.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Even if it says sold out, you can find that
- 19:53Speaker 2: perfect seat for you.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Yep. The official ticket marketplace of Major League Baseball is
- 19:58Speaker 1: SeatGeek to find that seat for you, whether it's down
- 20:01Speaker 1: the stretch, a team that you're following that's going to
- 20:04Speaker 1: play postseason ball or whatever you're going to game for.
- 20:07Speaker 1: You want to see a particular pitcher. Eventually, playoff tickets,
- 20:10Speaker 1: same thing, right? Playoff tickets generally sold out. Don't worry.
- 20:14Speaker 1: SeatGeek has the spot.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Find your green dot. Find the green dot. Red dot,
- 20:17Speaker 2: bad deal. Green dot, great deal. There's plenty of green
- 20:20Speaker 2: dots for whatever game you want. Find it. Buy your
- 20:22Speaker 2: tickets and go enjoy the game.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Code TERRITORY10. 10% off your next set of tickets at SeatGeek.
- 20:28Speaker 1: That's 10% off any MLB tickets with the promo code TERRITORY10.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Make sure you click the link in the description to
- 20:35Speaker 1: download the app, and then the code will automatically be
- 20:38Speaker 1: added to your account so that you can use it later.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what he said.
- 20:42Speaker 1: That's what he said.
- 20:44Speaker 2: That's what he said.
- 20:45Speaker 1: That's what he said. It's going to keep going. It
- 20:51Speaker 1: just is.
- 20:52Speaker 2: No.
- 20:52Speaker 1: People want to hear about it. Yes. No.
- 20:56Speaker 2: I'm Nolan Aranato. I'm Nolan Aranato from now on. Sorry, Nolan.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Take your 10 gold gloves and We're going to chat
- 21:04Speaker 2: about it.
- 21:06Speaker 1: The reason that the Cattell Marte story continues is he
- 21:09Speaker 1: wore a hat that had some messaging to it. And
- 21:12Speaker 1: then there was, as Mark Craig put here and some
- 21:15Speaker 1: others from the athletic wrote about lots of chatter about
- 21:17Speaker 1: his choice of hat that read made the bridges. I
- 21:20Speaker 1: burn light the way. Okay. So when, when you're finally
- 21:25Speaker 1: showing up after weeks off and then you wear a
- 21:28Speaker 1: hat that has some messaging on it, you're going to
- 21:31Speaker 1: get questions, right? It's not like, dude, where's my car?
- 21:34Speaker 1: It's a real message that makes you think, okay? And
- 21:38Speaker 1: then Zoltan. Zoltan. Then you have Tori Lavello saying, I
- 21:43Speaker 1: want to move past this Cattell stuff as quickly as possible.
- 21:47Speaker 1: I think if you chop up those words, maybe he's
- 21:49Speaker 1: taking some accountability. He feels like he's done some things
- 21:53Speaker 1: and he wants to get better. That's how I read it.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Okay.
- 21:57Speaker 1: That's what Tori said. Here's what Cattell Marte said. I
- 22:01Speaker 1: didn't know what it was. I didn't know I had
- 22:03Speaker 1: that hat on. I didn't know. I just put it on.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Okay.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Maybe it's super, super innocent that you're putting on a
- 22:10Speaker 1: pretty meaningful hat and it can be interpreted in a
- 22:13Speaker 1: variety of ways. But the reason this story continues is
- 22:18Speaker 1: that people are going to ask a question like that.
- 22:20Speaker 1: When you have a hat like that on Garrett Cole,
- 22:23Speaker 1: right after he finished his career with the Astros goes
- 22:25Speaker 1: into the clubhouse and puts a Boris cap on, right?
- 22:29Speaker 1: That just means, Hey, I'm a free agent. This time
- 22:32Speaker 1: is done. I'm not going to be on this team again.
- 22:35Speaker 1: I'm hitting free agency, right? That is a message. Quetel
- 22:39Speaker 1: Marte is not stupid, AJ. He is well aware that
- 22:42Speaker 1: what he says or does as a major league star
- 22:45Speaker 1: player is going to be scrutinized, right? This is him
- 22:49Speaker 1: with all of the lights and cameras on him. So
- 22:52Speaker 1: if you're going to wear a hat like that and
- 22:54Speaker 1: then say, oh, I don't know, I just found, I
- 22:56Speaker 1: was just looking for my hat sayings and this is
- 22:59Speaker 1: the one that I picked up randomly. Do you believe that?
- 23:06Speaker 2: Okay. No, I don't believe that. But that's the answer
- 23:09Speaker 2: he gave, so we have to believe him. Also, I
- 23:12Speaker 2: want to say this for all the Twitter people out there,
- 23:14Speaker 2: and this is my least favorite argument of all time,
- 23:16Speaker 2: and I know Kratz gets this too, and it's just
- 23:18Speaker 2: a dumb argument. We were not as good of players
- 23:21Speaker 2: as Cattell Marte. We understand that. Okay? I know. I
- 23:26Speaker 2: played for, Kratz played for, you know, whatever. How many
- 23:30Speaker 2: ever years? What was it? 12 years? Kratz 13? How
- 23:33Speaker 2: many years did you play? Parts of 11 in the
- 23:37Speaker 2: big leagues. 19 total. Parts of 11. Okay, thank you.
- 23:40Speaker 2: I played parts of 19 years in the major leagues.
- 23:43Speaker 2: I was not as good of a player as Cattell Marte. Okay,
- 23:46Speaker 2: let's just get that out there. But I did play
- 23:49Speaker 2: with some players that were actually better than him. One
- 23:52Speaker 2: of them was Barry Bonds. And you know what? For
- 23:54Speaker 2: all the crap that Barry Bonds took, he always showed up. OK,
- 23:58Speaker 2: he always showed up to a game and people talk
- 24:00Speaker 2: about him like he's the worst person in the world.
- 24:03Speaker 2: He always showed up. Now, did he play? Now, there
- 24:05Speaker 2: were days where he didn't play, but he showed up.
- 24:07Speaker 2: I played with Adrian Beltre, who's in the Hall of Fame.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Guess what he did every day? He showed up and
- 24:12Speaker 2: he played every day. I played with Freddie Freeman, who's
- 24:14Speaker 2: going to the Hall of Fame. Guess what he did?
- 24:16Speaker 2: He showed up every day. I played with Mark Burley,
- 24:19Speaker 2: Paul Canerco, Tori Hunter. name them i played with all
- 24:22Speaker 2: these guys right these are all some of the best
- 24:25Speaker 2: players of all time you know what they all did
- 24:27Speaker 2: they all showed up every day sorry and when they
- 24:30Speaker 2: wore they all knew when i wear a hat that
- 24:32Speaker 2: says something that people are going to ask me questions
- 24:35Speaker 2: about i better be prepared to answer the question not
- 24:37Speaker 2: say oh i didn't even know i had that hat
- 24:39Speaker 2: on i didn't it surprised me when you put the
- 24:42Speaker 2: hat on and it's that color green it's not like
- 24:44Speaker 2: it was a black hat that that That hat is screaming.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Read me what I say. When I'm, if I'm walking
- 24:49Speaker 2: down the street anywhere and I see that hat, I'm like, man,
- 24:52Speaker 2: what does that hat say? Cause it is so bright.
- 24:54Speaker 2: It burns my eyes. So listen, Tori Lovello can say
- 24:56Speaker 2: whatever he wants about, you know, what, how he interprets it.
- 25:00Speaker 2: You tell him our take and say, he didn't even
- 25:01Speaker 2: know what hat he had on. Maybe he just wore
- 25:03Speaker 2: like crap said, cause he matched his shirt yesterday. But
- 25:08Speaker 2: at some point you got to just take accountability for
- 25:10Speaker 2: your actions. That's it. At some point you got to
- 25:12Speaker 2: take accountability and you got to be held accountable. Every
- 25:15Speaker 2: action we make, excuse me, as an adult, I'm held
- 25:18Speaker 2: accountable for. If it's, I wanna do this, I wanna
- 25:21Speaker 2: do that, I wanna do this, whatever it is, there's
- 25:23Speaker 2: consequences to actions we take. And at some point you
- 25:26Speaker 2: have to be held accountable. It just can't always be,
- 25:28Speaker 2: It's okay. He won't do it again next year in
- 25:32Speaker 2: 2027 for the fifth straight year. There's got to be
- 25:35Speaker 2: some sort of accountability. And I think that's why the
- 25:38Speaker 2: story keeps going is because he doesn't have the accountability.
- 25:41Speaker 2: It's always, Oh, I didn't know. I didn't know. I
- 25:43Speaker 2: didn't know. Okay. If you didn't know, I'm sure someone's
- 25:46Speaker 2: told you by now you have to show up. Well,
- 25:49Speaker 2: you didn't know your hats on backwards and you look
- 25:52Speaker 2: like an idiot. Oh, I have a skull cap.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 25:54Speaker 2: That's the other thing. I have a skull cap on,
- 25:56Speaker 2: which is a hat. And also, by the way, I
- 25:58Speaker 2: have a full head of hair. So people are like,
- 26:00Speaker 2: you're trying to cover your baldness. No, I have a
- 26:03Speaker 2: full head of hair. You know why I wear a
- 26:04Speaker 2: hat backwards? Because I don't want to comb my stuff.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Unlike Crouch, he looks sexy as hell in his bald head.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Mr.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Clean.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Wait, I have an analogy for you guys. So everybody
- 26:14Speaker 1: has a family member who maybe, it could be extended
- 26:17Speaker 1: family member, whatever, gets in some trouble. It's like, oh,
- 26:19Speaker 1: look what, you know, aunt so-and-so did again or something, right?
- 26:23Speaker 1: Let's say that same person who gets in trouble frequently
- 26:26Speaker 1: or maybe doesn't show up. How about they don't show
- 26:28Speaker 1: up to stuff? So there's your direct correlation, right? They
- 26:30Speaker 1: were supposed to show. I bought them a ticket for
- 26:32Speaker 1: a couple hundred bucks for a game or for a
- 26:34Speaker 1: Broadway show. They didn't show up. Well, they better show
- 26:37Speaker 1: up to so-and-so's wedding than they show up. They wear white.
- 26:42Speaker 1: You're going to get talked about, okay? It is a
- 26:46Speaker 1: free world, but it is a free world to scrutinize
- 26:48Speaker 1: what you're doing. And you're a star in the sport.
- 26:51Speaker 1: So like you can act like, well, I don't know.
- 26:52Speaker 1: I just pick stuff up. Like on the most days. Okay.
- 26:56Speaker 1: There's one day here where the whole baseball world is
- 27:01Speaker 1: watching you. So don't act like you can just pick
- 27:04Speaker 1: up any sayings and throw them on. And it doesn't
- 27:06Speaker 1: mean anything. They're looking for something. And when I say they,
- 27:09Speaker 1: I mean, everyone that includes us, we're covering this, right?
- 27:13Speaker 1: Look at AJ. Does he want to cover this every day? No,
- 27:16Speaker 1: but this is becoming a story.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Wait.
- 27:17Speaker 1: And this is a distraction. This is a full fledged distraction.
- 27:21Speaker 1: We are at the point, AJ, where Tori Lavello has
- 27:23Speaker 1: to start looking up meanings of a saying on a
- 27:26Speaker 1: hat to try and figure out how he is going
- 27:29Speaker 1: to defend him. You don't think that's distracting a manager
- 27:32Speaker 1: that has enough going on to try and manage a
- 27:35Speaker 1: team into a postseason that he's got to be sitting
- 27:37Speaker 1: there with AI or Google or whatever and being like,
- 27:41Speaker 1: let me see how I can answer this to the media.
- 27:44Speaker 1: You've got to be kidding me, bro. Can you just
- 27:46Speaker 1: stop for one second?
- 27:49Speaker 2: That goes to accountability. That's the accountability. That's the accountability.
- 27:54Speaker 2: And the problem is nobody wants to say it because
- 27:57Speaker 2: they all want to be good teammates to them, right?
- 27:59Speaker 2: But I guarantee you, Krasin, tell me if I'm wrong.
- 28:01Speaker 2: I'm happy to be wrong. I'm wrong all the time.
- 28:04Speaker 2: His teammates behind this blind closed doors are going, are
- 28:06Speaker 2: you kidding me? He wore that hat? You know they're
- 28:09Speaker 2: saying it? What are you talking about? Nolan Arenado said it.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Just not as many words. He's like, he's a really
- 28:17Speaker 2: good player. I don't really want to deal with this anymore.
- 28:21Speaker 2: We need him in the lineup. That's what they've been
- 28:22Speaker 2: saying the whole time. Nolan's new. Nolan is probably the
- 28:27Speaker 2: least dramatic person. His only drama in his career was
- 28:30Speaker 2: the fact that he was like, going to be traded,
- 28:32Speaker 2: not going to be traded, all this stuff. He goes
- 28:34Speaker 2: about his work day in and day out. And not
- 28:39Speaker 2: to belabor a point, but You 100% knew what you
- 28:44Speaker 2: were wearing. I'm sorry. I don't believe that you didn't
- 28:46Speaker 2: know what you were wearing. I knew. I put on
- 28:48Speaker 2: my FoulTerritoryShop.com Kyle Schwarber shirt. I knew it. And I
- 28:55Speaker 2: am the least good-looking, caring-about-what-I-look-like type of person. Your hat
- 29:02Speaker 2: matched your shirt. You knew exactly what you were doing.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Your eyebrows were perfectly manicured. You're a good-looking man who
- 29:09Speaker 2: comes to the ballpark. ready to go when you come
- 29:13Speaker 2: to the ballpark. But there is a standard to being apologetic.
- 29:20Speaker 2: And in my opinion, complete outsider, he does not fit
- 29:25Speaker 2: the profile of being as apologetic as you would think
- 29:29Speaker 2: somebody that wants to actually be forgiven for what he's done.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Or maybe he just doesn't feel like it's as big
- 29:37Speaker 2: a deal as everybody else is making it out to be.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Definitely. That's definitely part of it. Because if you really care,
- 29:43Speaker 1: you're having conversations with the team, with your team behind
- 29:46Speaker 1: the scenes saying, hey, how do I come out as
- 29:49Speaker 1: genuine as possible when I speak to the media? And
- 29:52Speaker 1: there were plenty of shots of this during that time.
- 29:58Speaker 1: media conference again, like how many excuses can we make? Like, oh,
- 30:01Speaker 1: well guys, like, you know, he's just different or like
- 30:04Speaker 1: he's sitting laid back with his arms crossed taking, you
- 30:08Speaker 1: can do that 99% of the time. No one's going
- 30:10Speaker 1: to care. Maybe the one time to not do that
- 30:12Speaker 1: is when you're trying to come back from two weeks
- 30:15Speaker 1: of ditching your team to explain what the situation was.
- 30:19Speaker 1: It just comes off so poorly. The casino thing. I still,
- 30:22Speaker 1: I don't think I'll ever get over that part. You're
- 30:24Speaker 1: not with the team for no reason. And then you're
- 30:27Speaker 1: at a casino having a time while your team is playing. Like,
- 30:31Speaker 1: I mean, you guys are the ones that we go
- 30:33Speaker 1: to for this, not me, right? But if that was
- 30:35Speaker 1: my high school basketball team, I would be losing my
- 30:39Speaker 1: freaking mind. You know, like I'd be going to coach.
- 30:42Speaker 2: You said it wasn't a big deal though, Scott. Didn't
- 30:45Speaker 2: you hear him say he didn't think that was a
- 30:46Speaker 2: big deal? He said, oh, it wasn't that big of
- 30:48Speaker 2: a deal. What's the big deal to that? I mean,
- 30:51Speaker 2: there's a huge deal.
- 30:51Speaker 1: That's where he's lost.
- 30:53Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. But again, going home. He's not
- 30:57Speaker 2: being held accountable. He's not. I'm sorry. And I love
- 31:00Speaker 2: Tori Lovello, but by just, just someone needs to grab
- 31:04Speaker 2: them and say, this isn't the right way. And I
- 31:06Speaker 2: know they can't do anything because he's such a great
- 31:08Speaker 2: player and he's their best player on the team and
- 31:11Speaker 2: he's making so much money, but someone has got to
- 31:14Speaker 2: be able to get through to him. I'm sorry.
- 31:16Speaker 1: I'm with you. And here's, what's going to happen to,
- 31:21Speaker 1: I guarantee it, right? People feel comfortable coming on this
- 31:24Speaker 1: show and speaking their mind. And that's what we do
- 31:26Speaker 1: every day. There's no doubt that there will be some
- 31:29Speaker 1: teammates at some point who feel comfortable enough when they're
- 31:31Speaker 1: not on the team or when they're not playing anymore, whatever,
- 31:34Speaker 1: to come on and give us more. Because we know
- 31:36Speaker 1: that most of that clubhouse is freaking pissed. Come on.
- 31:40Speaker 1: At this point.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think a lot of people would just
- 31:43Speaker 2: be like, I can't really believe he did it. I
- 31:46Speaker 2: can't believe he. I don't think there's players that were like,
- 31:49Speaker 2: who are going, well, he did it. I can do it. Like,
- 31:53Speaker 2: I think it's more of like, whoa, the exact reactions
- 31:56Speaker 2: that we've all had. Like, seriously? He's missed a game.
- 32:00Speaker 2: He's opted out of not coming to the field every
- 32:03Speaker 2: season since 2023, at least one game in the year.
- 32:08Speaker 1: Yeah, unacceptable. So the saga continues. Maybe this is the
- 32:12Speaker 1: end for now, but don't you worry. If the Diamondbacks
- 32:15Speaker 1: don't make the playoffs, this is all going to pop
- 32:17Speaker 1: up again because– there were some losses created by him.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Okay. Here's the thing for the, for the fans at home. Okay.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Wherever you work, let's say I'm going to use, I
- 32:28Speaker 2: don't know, pick a company, Home Depot. Okay. You work
- 32:30Speaker 2: at Home Depot and you're the, you know, you're a
- 32:34Speaker 2: guy that works at Home Depot. You do the, you
- 32:36Speaker 2: do your job. And then the guy who's your boss, who's,
- 32:39Speaker 2: you know, let's say the assistant manager at Home Depot,
- 32:42Speaker 2: they just don't show up. They're like, nah, Let's say
- 32:46Speaker 2: it's an unloading day. You got a bunch of shipments in.
- 32:48Speaker 2: You got to unload the trucks. The assistant manager was like,
- 32:51Speaker 2: you know what, guys? I'm not feeling it today. I'm
- 32:54Speaker 2: just not going to show up, not going to tell anybody, nothing.
- 32:58Speaker 2: How would you feel at Home Depot? And then you're
- 33:01Speaker 2: doing extra work because you have to unload more stuff.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Like it's, it sounds like a dumb analogy, but that's
- 33:07Speaker 2: kind of what it was on his turn. Like you're just, Oh,
- 33:11Speaker 2: I'm the assistant manager. I'm better than everyone else beneath me.
- 33:15Speaker 2: I don't have to show up today. And then the
- 33:16Speaker 2: manager goes, well, you know, he just misunderstood the directions
- 33:20Speaker 2: of having to show up. Okay. Okay. I'm going to
- 33:24Speaker 2: use this. This is another analogy. I'm going to, you're
- 33:25Speaker 2: fired and you guys can say I'm crazy. I'm a
- 33:28Speaker 2: part of a hunting lease, okay? There's like 20 guys
- 33:30Speaker 2: in this hunting lease. We have work days, all right,
- 33:33Speaker 2: on Saturdays. And deer season's coming up to go hunting, okay?
- 33:37Speaker 2: We have a rule where if you don't go to
- 33:38Speaker 2: work days, you don't get in the lottery where you
- 33:41Speaker 2: pick where you go sit on opening day of deer,
- 33:43Speaker 2: opening weekend. Well, I haven't been able to go to
- 33:45Speaker 2: work days because I've been working on Saturday. I work
- 33:48Speaker 2: on Saturdays on Fox, okay? Guess what? Guess who can't complain?
- 33:53Speaker 2: And if I want to go hunting, I get the
- 33:54Speaker 2: last pick and I just got to go wherever I
- 33:56Speaker 2: got to go. You know why? Because I didn't go
- 33:58Speaker 2: and do the work. So therefore, you know what I get? Squat, right?
- 34:02Speaker 2: So I'm like, oh, that's fair. You guys did all
- 34:04Speaker 2: the work. You deserve the first picks in the lottery.
- 34:07Speaker 2: I don't get it because I haven't been able to
- 34:09Speaker 2: show up. Now, it's not my fault. It's a little
- 34:11Speaker 2: bit different, but it's kind of the same thing. If
- 34:13Speaker 2: you don't do the work and you don't show up,
- 34:15Speaker 2: then you shouldn't get the rewards.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Yeah, well, he's getting them. I mean, and to me,
- 34:20Speaker 1: the analogy for what you're saying is that I just
- 34:24Speaker 1: think creating excuses again and again for him, like we
- 34:27Speaker 1: got to stop with that. Let's just call a spade
- 34:29Speaker 1: a spade. We're getting closer to that. In the week,
- 34:39Speaker 1: let's dive into a former team of Eric Kratz's and
- 34:43Speaker 1: find out why they are so different, why they are
- 34:46Speaker 1: so successful in the regular season. And can that carry
- 34:49Speaker 1: into the postseason for a deeper October run. Let's talk
- 34:53Speaker 1: about the long ball. So this is one of the
- 34:55Speaker 1: best offenses in baseball, but they rank dead last in
- 34:59Speaker 1: home runs. A lot of Major League Baseball and the
- 35:02Speaker 1: teams within it promote pulled fly ball contact. The Brewers don't.
- 35:10Speaker 1: They don't rank well in that category. But they are
- 35:14Speaker 1: a patient team. This is not like a slap-hitting team.
- 35:16Speaker 1: They're among the most patient teams in Major League Baseball.
- 35:19Speaker 1: This is from a Mike Petriello article that they don't swing.
- 35:23Speaker 1: They're the only team with an opposite attack angle. And
- 35:26Speaker 1: they do actually capitalize with homers in situations with runners
- 35:30Speaker 1: in scoring position as well as most teams in baseball,
- 35:33Speaker 1: but they barely swing. They're one of the most patient
- 35:34Speaker 1: teams in the last decade. They draw a ton of walks.
- 35:38Speaker 1: They don't chase bad pitches. So, When we add all
- 35:42Speaker 1: of this up, and we'll mix in some more stats
- 35:44Speaker 1: as we go for a team that ranks third in
- 35:46Speaker 1: batting average in baseball, can this work in the playoffs?
- 35:50Speaker 1: Because the article concludes with, hey, in the postseason, the
- 35:56Speaker 1: team that had homers, their opponent, wins about 80% of
- 35:58Speaker 1: the time. The Brewers haven't gotten past the division series
- 36:01Speaker 1: since 2018, and they make the playoffs just about every year.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Add it all up. Spit it out. Tell me what
- 36:06Speaker 1: you like and don't like.
- 36:09Speaker 2: I don't like when people just throw the stat out.
- 36:13Speaker 2: Whoever out homers the other team in the playoffs wins. Like,
- 36:18Speaker 2: tell me why that is. Why do homers play in
- 36:21Speaker 2: the playoffs? And the reason I think it plays in
- 36:26Speaker 2: the playoffs is because there's just too much good pitching
- 36:30Speaker 2: going on the entire time. Rarely are you getting any
- 36:35Speaker 2: kind of down guy. Rarely are you going... 80 pitches
- 36:41Speaker 2: deep into a starter. You get to 70 pitches, you
- 36:44Speaker 2: get to the second time through, the manager's hand is
- 36:48Speaker 2: right on the panic button. As soon as there's any,
- 36:50Speaker 2: let's go right to our highest leverage guy out of
- 36:54Speaker 2: the bullpen. I'm not saying this can't work in the playoffs.
- 36:58Speaker 2: I'm saying that's why historically the home run really plays
- 37:01Speaker 2: because you're like, man, we just couldn't get anything going.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Why can't you get anything going? Because it's a number one.
- 37:07Speaker 2: It's a number two. It's a number one out of
- 37:09Speaker 2: the bullpen. It's a number two. It's the closer and
- 37:11Speaker 2: the game's over. And you're like, oh boy, that happened fast.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Can this work? Yes, it can work. And the way
- 37:19Speaker 2: that it works is they trust that they can do
- 37:23Speaker 2: this against all of that good pitching. Have they done
- 37:26Speaker 2: it yet? Absolutely not. Do teams win that way? Not
- 37:33Speaker 2: historically or majority of the time. But that doesn't matter.
- 37:37Speaker 2: This team has to believe what they're doing will work.
- 37:40Speaker 2: The reason they have to believe it is because somebody's
- 37:43Speaker 2: not just going to come in and hit eight homers
- 37:46Speaker 2: in a playoff run. There's not that Daniel Murphy type
- 37:50Speaker 2: of moment on this team, except you just win the
- 37:54Speaker 2: games the exact same way. You line up against the
- 37:57Speaker 2: opponent that you have, and you execute your style in
- 38:00Speaker 2: the box, and you see if you're better than them
- 38:03Speaker 2: in the postseason.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Power is valued across the sport, right?
- 38:09Speaker 2: Ignorantly sometimes. Ignorantly sometimes.
- 38:11Speaker 1: That's fine. Yeah, too much, too much. There can be
- 38:13Speaker 1: too much. I think a team on the other end
- 38:15Speaker 1: of that sometimes has been the Yankees, and you see
- 38:17Speaker 1: their approach in the playoffs sometimes, and you're like, yeah,
- 38:19Speaker 1: that doesn't work either. Okay. But is there a happy
- 38:24Speaker 1: medium is really the question here, right? The power plus
- 38:27Speaker 1: the slug that we've seen from teams like, I would say, Toronto.
- 38:32Speaker 1: We looked at Toronto last year, and they're like, oh, look,
- 38:34Speaker 1: they all made contact. There was plenty of slug in
- 38:36Speaker 1: that lineup last year. Now, some of that slug disappeared
- 38:38Speaker 1: this year. Vladdy Jr. lost his superpowers for now. But
- 38:41Speaker 1: for Milwaukee, I mean, you've got two hitters with 20-plus homers, barely.
- 38:46Speaker 1: Jake Bowers has 23. Jackson Churrio has 20. I'm not
- 38:50Speaker 1: talking about the team approach as much as the personnel, too.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Should the Brewers be looking for a little more pop
- 38:57Speaker 1: to tap into when they're evaluating talent?
- 39:02Speaker 2: Sure, sure, but you also have to understand how they
- 39:05Speaker 2: build their lineup. They have very little slugs in their lineup.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Not slug, slugs. They have a very athletic lineup. They
- 39:14Speaker 2: have a very defensive-oriented lineup. Yes, Jake Bowers in right field,
- 39:20Speaker 2: probably not your most athletic, but you know what? They'll
- 39:24Speaker 2: put Jake Bowers in right field when, they're facing a
- 39:30Speaker 2: lefty because he'll go left on left and then you
- 39:32Speaker 2: have Vaughn at first base. And then as soon as
- 39:35Speaker 2: Vaughn comes out for a platoon advantage, defensive replacement type
- 39:40Speaker 2: of thing, then Bowers goes to first. So they have
- 39:44Speaker 2: to play their game. Should they try to evaluate for
- 39:47Speaker 2: more power? Absolutely. The thing that you have to understand
- 39:51Speaker 2: about these guys is it's not like their team is
- 39:53Speaker 2: filled with Chandler Simpson. These guys have power. Their approach
- 39:59Speaker 2: is clearly based on that graphic of the fact that
- 40:05Speaker 2: their attack angle, meaning they're not hitting the ball consistently
- 40:10Speaker 2: to the pool side, they're consistently hitting it to the
- 40:13Speaker 2: opposite side of second base. That is a crazy... It's
- 40:19Speaker 2: clearly focused stat that, in my opinion, really works. Because
- 40:26Speaker 2: Dale Swain was the hitting coach in 2014 and 2015.
- 40:31Speaker 2: Did that Kansas City Royals team have uber, uber power? Hey,
- 40:34Speaker 2: you know what? Eric Hosmer was one of the best
- 40:37Speaker 2: power prospects in the minor leagues. Moustakas has a 30,
- 40:41Speaker 2: maybe even 40 home run season under his belt. Alex Gordon.
- 40:44Speaker 2: We had guys with power. Salvador Perez. All guys with power.
- 40:49Speaker 2: But in the K, at Kauffman Stadium, power gets diminished.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Dale Swain said, look, teams that win, and I forget
- 40:58Speaker 2: what his stat was. It was like, if you can
- 41:01Speaker 2: get to 56% of balls driven in the air to
- 41:06Speaker 2: the opposite field with runners in scoring position, you have,
- 41:10Speaker 2: like over the last four years it was, that team
- 41:13Speaker 2: was the team that won the World Series or had
- 41:16Speaker 2: the best, most run score. So there's different ways to
- 41:20Speaker 2: cook the soup. I think some teams just automatically, ignorantly
- 41:25Speaker 2: sometimes go to You got to pull the ball more
- 41:29Speaker 2: and you got to pull the ball more in the air.
- 41:31Speaker 2: You know why? Because those numbers are better. It's like
- 41:33Speaker 2: telling a pitcher, you got to throw just a little
- 41:36Speaker 2: bit harder. Why? Because the numbers from 97 miles an
- 41:40Speaker 2: hour to 98 miles an hour are drastically lower for
- 41:43Speaker 2: a hitter. Yes, I am not disagreeing with that, but
- 41:47Speaker 2: not everybody can do those things. And I think the
- 41:50Speaker 2: Brewers have done a great job of leaning into their ability.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Now they have to be able to execute it in
- 41:56Speaker 2: the postseason. which I think with this lineup, they've played together,
- 42:01Speaker 2: they've had more experience together in the playoffs, and they
- 42:05Speaker 2: should know it works. They beat the Cubs. Everybody thinks, oh, man,
- 42:10Speaker 2: Dodgers ran over them. They did. They did run over them.
- 42:13Speaker 2: That doesn't mean that's what's going to happen this year. Right.
- 42:16Speaker 1: And the Dodgers had some of the most dominant pitching
- 42:20Speaker 1: we've seen in the playoffs from starting pitching for sure, right?
- 42:23Speaker 1: It's tough to string hits together. Multiple hits together. That's
- 42:27Speaker 1: part of it, right? That's the basics of the sport, right?
- 42:29Speaker 1: Take a walk, hit a homer, boom, you got two runs.
- 42:32Speaker 1: Try and rack five, six singles together to get two
- 42:35Speaker 1: runs like that against Glasnow, Snell, Yamamoto, Otani when they're
- 42:40Speaker 1: really prime dealing. Near impossible.
- 42:45Speaker 2: And I ran the first year of our show, I
- 42:47Speaker 2: tried to run like a scatter report type of show.
- 42:50Speaker 2: It got boring and long and Nobody really wants to
- 42:53Speaker 2: hear it, but that's how you, that's how you get
- 42:55Speaker 2: ready for a playoff game. And I can still remember
- 42:58Speaker 2: some of the scatter reports from years that I was
- 43:00Speaker 2: in the playoffs when I played in 18. And then
- 43:03Speaker 2: the other years when I wasn't even playing, cause you just,
- 43:05Speaker 2: you drill in that scatter report. You drill in the
- 43:07Speaker 2: fact that certain guys can't hit a breaking ball early
- 43:10Speaker 2: in the count or don't swing. And that's what enables
- 43:13Speaker 2: you to have success through a lineup in the playoffs.
- 43:18Speaker 1: Hey, a shout out to I'm wearing the shirt today,
- 43:21Speaker 1: the Philly show. They're going to be at Manco and
- 43:23Speaker 1: Manco in Ocean City, New Jersey tomorrow at 1130 a.m.
- 43:27Speaker 1: Eastern time for one of their big events that they
- 43:29Speaker 1: do two, three times a year down at some sweet,
- 43:33Speaker 1: sweet pizza at Manco and Manco. John Kruk.
- 43:39Speaker 2: Yep.
- 43:39Speaker 1: It's a great spot. It's great food. And John Kruk
- 43:42Speaker 1: is going to join them for a special episode. So
- 43:44Speaker 1: if you happen to live in Pennsylvania or Jersey or
- 43:48Speaker 1: close enough to be able to go and you'd like
- 43:50Speaker 1: to attend that in person and Get to see John
- 43:53Speaker 1: Kruk and all of his organic jokes. I say organic
- 43:56Speaker 1: because sometimes he means it and sometimes just what he
- 43:58Speaker 1: says turns into a joke. So he's an entertaining guy.
- 44:01Speaker 1: He goes viral, I mean, once every week or two
- 44:05Speaker 1: on the broadcast. We're at that status. It's that often
- 44:09Speaker 1: that he drops a line where people are.
- 44:11Speaker 2: Like, what? He's one of my all-time favorites, Kruk. Love
- 44:15Speaker 2: that guy. He is. Yeah. He's the best. In real life,
- 44:19Speaker 2: he's actually watered down. on TV from what he is
- 44:25Speaker 2: in real life. In real life, you could just stick
- 44:27Speaker 2: your head in his office. It's around the corner from,
- 44:29Speaker 2: I mean, it's all their offices. It's around the corner
- 44:32Speaker 2: from their booth. You're like, Crocky, how you doing? He's like,
- 44:36Speaker 2: I haven't been able to eat anything because I'm supposed
- 44:39Speaker 2: to lose weight because my hip hurts. And now my
- 44:42Speaker 2: hip still hurts. Now I'm miserable, hungry, and my hip hurts.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Like his stories, and then he just goes off. It
- 44:51Speaker 2: is tremendous. He is awesome.
- 44:55Speaker 1: He is awesome. This is the show, by the way,
- 44:57Speaker 1: QR code, bottom right corner. If you want to watch
- 44:59Speaker 1: the show live tomorrow, which is Thursday, John Kruk on
- 45:04Speaker 1: the Philly show, Kruki is still calling quite a few
- 45:07Speaker 1: Phillies games. So he'll have his take on what's going
- 45:09Speaker 1: on there. He'll have take takes on a little bit
- 45:12Speaker 1: of the rest of the league, past baseball stories, the
- 45:16Speaker 1: whole deal. So our guys over at the Philly show
- 45:18Speaker 1: do a great job. And there's good food there. Good
- 45:22Speaker 1: eats over at Manco and Manco. So I'm excited to
- 45:25Speaker 1: check that out. And AJ, we were talking about before,
- 45:28Speaker 1: Kratz and I, but the Phillies are also on fire.
- 45:32Speaker 2: Oh, they might catch the Braves. We thought that was impossible.
- 45:35Speaker 2: They might catch the Braves. Like, seriously, they might catch
- 45:38Speaker 2: the Braves. They're what, two and a half or one
- 45:40Speaker 2: and a half behind them? It's close.
- 45:42Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Three going into the series. They got a bunch. You
- 45:46Speaker 2: got seven games coming up against them or something like that?
- 45:50Speaker 2: We talk about different hitters making adjustments, like PCA, controlling
- 45:54Speaker 2: the zone more. The Phillies dropping their strikeouts the way
- 45:58Speaker 2: that they have, I don't understand. I don't understand how
- 46:01Speaker 2: a team turns it around that quick. That specific thing
- 46:05Speaker 2: around that quick.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Hey, let's slap. Mariners got back on the winning side
- 46:21Speaker 1: of things, and they have a new prospect, Laz Montes,
- 46:23Speaker 1: who hit a missile yesterday in the game, his first homer.
- 46:27Speaker 1: But he also signed the Green Monster in the back
- 46:30Speaker 1: end before his debut, which many have done, as you
- 46:33Speaker 1: can see on here. Cool moment.
- 46:35Speaker 2: I signed where nobody's ever going to paint over it.
- 46:38Speaker 2: I signed on the ceiling on the concrete in the
- 46:42Speaker 2: Green Monster. So, RIP to that. to that Sharpie that
- 46:47Speaker 2: I signed with because you're right on concrete. It's cooked
- 46:50Speaker 2: after that, but they're not painting over the concrete, so
- 46:53Speaker 2: mine's still up there.
- 46:55Speaker 1: Worth it. Worth it to ruin one Sharpie for that.
- 46:58Speaker 2: And that was a rocket that he hit the center.
- 47:01Speaker 2: You see certain guys and you hear about the 80-grade
- 47:04Speaker 2: potential power, that type of swing, he may end up
- 47:08Speaker 2: in Japan or he may end up hitting 30 dingers
- 47:11Speaker 2: in the show. Mm-hmm.
- 47:16Speaker 1: And a parlay boost token could be in your BetMGM
- 47:20Speaker 1: account of the baseball variety, an MLB parlay boost token
- 47:24Speaker 1: to swing for a bigger payout. Go check it out
- 47:26Speaker 1: and see if you can activate that on any MLB
- 47:28Speaker 1: parlay and get yourself a bigger payout if that parlay hits.
