- 0:00Speaker 1: This production is brought to you by the Recess Bell.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Cameos are great. I love movies that have Ken Jennings,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Jack Nick Schneider. Hello everybody, my name is Justin Greenberg,
- 0:27Speaker 1: and you are listening to the Film Reel right here
- 0:29Speaker 1: on the Recess Bell Network. Now. I have not recorded
- 0:33Speaker 1: a podcast in a little while, and I'm gonna be
- 0:36Speaker 1: fully honest with you. It has been gorgeous here on
- 0:40Speaker 1: Long Island and I just don't want to be indoors
- 0:43Speaker 1: recording podcasts. I don't. I know that might sound selfish
- 0:47Speaker 1: and lazy, and it is, but if it's beautiful, I
- 0:50Speaker 1: am outside, I'm out in the sunam at the beach,
- 0:54Speaker 1: I'm at the park, and I record this at my
- 0:56Speaker 1: place of work down at a radio station where I work.
- 1:00Speaker 1: And I'm not trying to be at my place of
- 1:03Speaker 1: work on my days off to record a podcast in
- 1:06Speaker 1: this beautiful Long Island weather. So we're gonna pick it up.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I want to I just had a stroke. Mean, I
- 1:13Speaker 1: want to review a movie that I have been dreading
- 1:16Speaker 1: to see. I've talked about it on the radio, but
- 1:19Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about it on the Film Real podcast.
- 1:22Speaker 1: We're gonna be reviewing Happy Gilmore Too, and Woo. A
- 1:27Speaker 1: lot of people like this one. I don't know what
- 1:29Speaker 1: they're watching, because this is one of the worst films
- 1:33Speaker 1: I have seen in quite some time. It is just
- 1:37Speaker 1: a poor excuse for filmmaking. Adam Sandler is on autopilot
- 1:41Speaker 1: these days, and I know that's a running joke that
- 1:44Speaker 1: he makes movies as an excuse to go on vacation
- 1:47Speaker 1: and hang out with his friends. But this is so
- 1:50Speaker 1: much worse because Happy Gilmore from nineteen ninety six is
- 1:52Speaker 1: one of my absolute favorite movies. It's in my top
- 1:55Speaker 1: three favorite comedies of all time. And the character of
- 1:58Speaker 1: Happy Gilmore is thisetic fireball, a Tasmanian devil. And we're
- 2:03Speaker 1: gonna get into some spoilers with this review, so if
- 2:05Speaker 1: you don't want to know anything about Happy Gilmore Too,
- 2:08Speaker 1: you might want to not listen to this episode of
- 2:10Speaker 1: Film Reel. But basically, the movie starts off with Virginia Vennett,
- 2:15Speaker 1: Julie Bowen's character from the first movie, dying in a
- 2:19Speaker 1: horrific tragedy where Happy Gilmore shoots a golf ball and
- 2:23Speaker 1: it kills her. And it's not funny. It's actually very disrespectful.
- 2:28Speaker 1: To the establishment that we have with that character. And
- 2:32Speaker 1: I know, the first Happy Gilmore starts off with his
- 2:35Speaker 1: dad getting killed by a slap shot, so they're trying
- 2:38Speaker 1: to do the same joke, which is a running theme
- 2:41Speaker 1: with this movie. It's the same fucking thing over and
- 2:43Speaker 1: over again. But that was a throwaway joke for a
- 2:47Speaker 1: character we have no established relationship too. We have never
- 2:51Speaker 1: really met Happy Gilmore's dad. You just see a point
- 2:53Speaker 1: of view of him filming. This character played by Julie Bowen,
- 2:57Speaker 1: is beloved, she's you know, a weatheart in that first
- 3:01Speaker 1: Happy Gilmore and to have it just be a punchline
- 3:04Speaker 1: that she gets killed I think as a slap in
- 3:06Speaker 1: the face or a golf shot to the face. So
- 3:09Speaker 1: already the movie's depressing. And then you have Adam Sandler,
- 3:12Speaker 1: who's just on autopilot for this entire movie, but specifically
- 3:16Speaker 1: the first half. He's playing a depressed character and it's
- 3:19Speaker 1: just not interesting to watch and it's depressing to watch.
- 3:22Speaker 1: He's sad and he's an alcoholic. I don't want to
- 3:25Speaker 1: watch this with a Happy Gilmore movie. I don't want
- 3:27Speaker 1: to be depressed for the first half of the movie.
- 3:29Speaker 1: He's going to AA meetings, he goes bankrupt, he's living
- 3:33Speaker 1: in a shitty house with his kids. It's just, why
- 3:36Speaker 1: is this the route we're going with a Happy Gilmore sequel. Honestly,
- 3:40Speaker 1: we didn't need a Happy Gilmore sequel. We don't need anymore.
- 3:43Speaker 1: The movie had a booke und finish and it's done.
- 3:47Speaker 1: But obviously Hollywood wants to make money, and Sandler wants
- 3:52Speaker 1: to make money for Netflix because he signed that huge
- 3:54Speaker 1: deal with them. So basically, Happy Gilmore has given up,
- 4:00Speaker 1: but he needs money to help pay for his daughter,
- 4:03Speaker 1: who's played by Israel life daughter who has the charisma
- 4:06Speaker 1: of a wet towel. She needs to go to ballet school.
- 4:09Speaker 1: So he needs to pick up the golf clubs and
- 4:11Speaker 1: get over the fact that he killed his wife with
- 4:14Speaker 1: a golf ball. So that's the basic premise of the
- 4:16Speaker 1: movie is that, you know, Happy Gilmore needs to get
- 4:19Speaker 1: back to golfing, but there's a rival golf company sort
- 4:23Speaker 1: of playing into the Live Golf company, you know, the
- 4:26Speaker 1: Saudi Arabian golf company that the PGA Tour has sort
- 4:29Speaker 1: of been feuding with the last couple of years, and
- 4:32Speaker 1: they want to sign Happy Gilmore to you know, participate
- 4:36Speaker 1: in their brand new wacky golf tournament. Happy Gilmore's loyal
- 4:40Speaker 1: to the PGA Tour, so he doesn't want to sign so,
- 4:43Speaker 1: and then eventually this leads to a match up between
- 4:47Speaker 1: the best of the PGA Tour versus the best of
- 4:49Speaker 1: the Maxi Tour and some sort of tournament that takes
- 4:53Speaker 1: place at the end of the movie, but we'll get
- 4:55Speaker 1: to that in a little bit. At this point, this
- 4:57Speaker 1: is where Shooter McGavin is introduced into the sequel. Shooter
- 5:01Speaker 1: McGavin is the best part of this movie. He actually
- 5:04Speaker 1: has energy. Christopher McDonald is not phoning in his performance
- 5:08Speaker 1: like Adam Sandler is. I honestly would have preferred just
- 5:11Speaker 1: a full on Shooter McGavin movie. So Shooters in a
- 5:14Speaker 1: mental institution due to the events of the first movie
- 5:18Speaker 1: and the Maxi League that's the name of the you know,
- 5:21Speaker 1: the parody of the live golf tournament. The head honcho
- 5:23Speaker 1: over the Maxi League, who is just so over the top.
- 5:27Speaker 1: This this head honcho of Maxie League. He's not funny. Uh,
- 5:32Speaker 1: it's not funny. We'll get back to the story in
- 5:35Speaker 1: just a second. This movie is not funny. The ultimate
- 5:38Speaker 1: sin of this movie is. It does not make me laugh.
- 5:40Speaker 1: It's sophomoric type of humor, which I don't even mind
- 5:44Speaker 1: that much. I don't mind a good dick joke. I
- 5:47Speaker 1: love the Jackass movies. I love Dumb and Dumber, I
- 5:49Speaker 1: love Beavis and butt Head. I don't mind sophomoric humor.
- 5:52Speaker 1: It's just something about this seems so Nickelodeon. And what
- 5:56Speaker 1: I mean by that, this seems like something that would
- 5:59Speaker 1: air in a twenty ten Nickelodeon sitcom. It is so
- 6:03Speaker 1: corny and so not funny. There are scenes involving I
- 6:10Speaker 1: haven't even gone to the celebrities yet. I haven't even
- 6:12Speaker 1: got there. There's so much wrong with this movie. I'm
- 6:15Speaker 1: actually getting angry thinking about it. I'm getting angry thinking
- 6:19Speaker 1: that people actually like what they saw. So before we
- 6:23Speaker 1: get back to the plot, I just want to go
- 6:25Speaker 1: over the cameos that take place in this movie. And
- 6:28Speaker 1: it's one cameo after another, after another, after another, after
- 6:32Speaker 1: another after another after another. It is unheard of. It's
- 6:35Speaker 1: like a SNL reunion of Oh my God, there's that guy,
- 6:39Speaker 1: Oh my God, there's that wrestler, there's that actor, there's
- 6:41Speaker 1: that athlete, there's that singer. Cameos need to be special.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I said this before, I'll say it a million times.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Think of the original Happy Gilmore. Think about when Bob
- 6:51Speaker 1: Barker shows up. It is so impactful. When Bob Barker
- 6:57Speaker 1: is the celebrity that Happy Gilmore is assigned to play with. Now,
- 7:01Speaker 1: that would have such little impact if before Bob Barker
- 7:05Speaker 1: was on the you know, the big screen, we had
- 7:08Speaker 1: Maury Povitch, Jerry Springer, Shaquille O'Neill, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky,
- 7:13Speaker 1: Bob Saggat, Dave Coolier, John Stamos, Mickey Mouse, Macaulay Culkin,
- 7:18Speaker 1: John Hughes, Sigott from Street Fighter. The cameo needs to
- 7:23Speaker 1: be special. And that is one of the worst parts
- 7:27Speaker 1: of Happy Gilmour Too. Is we are constantly seeing celebrity
- 7:33Speaker 1: after celebrity and it's not special. It's like eating ice
- 7:39Speaker 1: cream every single day. You only want to have ice
- 7:42Speaker 1: cream once a month because when you have that ice cream,
- 7:44Speaker 1: you go, wow, that is good ice cream. But if
- 7:47Speaker 1: you're eating it every day, you're just a big fat
- 7:49Speaker 1: guy with diabetes. And that's what Happy Gilmore Too is.
- 7:52Speaker 1: It's the diabetes of movies. So you have all these
- 7:56Speaker 1: endless celebrities that appear because Adam Sandler needs to droke
- 8:00Speaker 1: his ego and say I have friends. I'm friends with
- 8:04Speaker 1: Bad Bunny, I'm friends with Travis Kelsey, I'm friends with
- 8:08Speaker 1: Jack Nicholas. Oh, we get it. You're very, very, very wealthy,
- 8:12Speaker 1: and you have a lot of famous friends, and your
- 8:14Speaker 1: famous friends want to be in this movie. I'm sorry,
- 8:16Speaker 1: that's not how movies operate. Most of these people can't act.
- 8:21Speaker 1: You have all these golfers that appear, and they come
- 8:24Speaker 1: across as autistic. And I could say that because I
- 8:26Speaker 1: have autism, and it just they are wooden. They are
- 8:30Speaker 1: wooden actors. And I don't even mind the golfers appearing
- 8:35Speaker 1: because it's a golf movie, so you know, you have
- 8:37Speaker 1: some golf cameos, that's fine. But to have the endless, endless,
- 8:42Speaker 1: endless stream of cameos is not what we need. And
- 8:48Speaker 1: then I do promise we'll get back to the actual plot.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Another terrible thing about this movie is I don't know
- 8:54Speaker 1: who this movie's made for. Wouldn't you think that everybody
- 8:57Speaker 1: that's seeing Happy Gilmore two would watched the original movie.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I don't think they thought that because they keep on
- 9:06Speaker 1: showing scenes from the original movie. I've never seen this
- 9:10Speaker 1: done in the history of cinema. I've never seen a
- 9:12Speaker 1: movie have to show clips from the original movie. Don't
- 9:17Speaker 1: you watch the original before seeing the new one? Isn't
- 9:20Speaker 1: that why they're making the new one? Because the original
- 9:23Speaker 1: so popular? They don't make sequels thirty years after the
- 9:27Speaker 1: original one comes out. Unless it's an established movie with
- 9:30Speaker 1: established characters, with established scenes that we already know from
- 9:34Speaker 1: top to bottom. There's no need to actually show scenes
- 9:38Speaker 1: from the first movie. It's not like they do it
- 9:39Speaker 1: once or twice. It's around five, six, seven, maybe eight times.
- 9:42Speaker 1: They show previous scenes to remind people of oh remember
- 9:46Speaker 1: this character. You might not remember them, so let's actually
- 9:49Speaker 1: show the scene. The only thing that's making me want
- 9:51Speaker 1: to do is watch the original fucking movie. I go,
- 9:53Speaker 1: why am I watching this piece of shit when you're
- 9:55Speaker 1: showing me scenes from an actual good movie. There's also
- 9:59Speaker 1: quite a few of acts that have passed away that
- 10:01Speaker 1: are no longer allowed, you know, able to appear in
- 10:04Speaker 1: Happy Gilmour Took because they're dead, which is probably the
- 10:07Speaker 1: benefit for them that they didn't have to appear in
- 10:09Speaker 1: this piece of shit film. And instead of, you know,
- 10:12Speaker 1: doing something to honor their legacy, they just have other
- 10:16Speaker 1: actors play their kids. They go, oh, I remember the
- 10:21Speaker 1: guy who had the nail in his head. Uh, he's
- 10:23Speaker 1: gonna be played by a basketball player who also has
- 10:26Speaker 1: a nail in his head. Oh remember Chubbs, he had
- 10:30Speaker 1: a wooden hand. Well, his son also has a wooden hand.
- 10:33Speaker 1: What the fuck? How does he also have a wooden hand.
- 10:36Speaker 1: You're so uh just starving for any idea. You go,
- 10:41Speaker 1: Thom's had wooden hand, son also has wooden hand. The
- 10:46Speaker 1: guy who says you jackass, he's played by Eminem. Oh
- 10:49Speaker 1: my god, it's so funny. I can't believe they got Eminem.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Oh wait, I can believe because before Eminem there was
- 10:55Speaker 1: a million other cameos. If Eminem was the only cameo
- 10:59Speaker 1: in this movie, think about the impact that would have
- 11:01Speaker 1: had They go, oh my god, they got Eminem. But
- 11:03Speaker 1: you're just expecting them to get somebody on the level
- 11:06Speaker 1: of Eminem, and he's doing the same stick. That's all
- 11:09Speaker 1: this comedy is. It's regurgitating the same jokes that we
- 11:14Speaker 1: had in the original, just to a lesser extent. So
- 11:18Speaker 1: those are some of the major issues I've had. I
- 11:20Speaker 1: also mentioned how they show the scenes from the previous movie,
- 11:23Speaker 1: and what that also does is it just shows how
- 11:26Speaker 1: ugly this movie looks. Because the original Happy Gilmore shot
- 11:30Speaker 1: on film and it's got a nice look to it.
- 11:32Speaker 1: But there's something about all modern movies, particularly the ones
- 11:35Speaker 1: on Netflix that have this I don't know, they look
- 11:38Speaker 1: like a T mobile ad. There's just something with the
- 11:41Speaker 1: cameras that they use, and the filters and the you know,
- 11:43Speaker 1: the lenses that they're using in the post production work,
- 11:46Speaker 1: and the lighting that they use. It just looks like
- 11:49Speaker 1: a Nickelodeon or a Disney show or like I said,
- 11:52Speaker 1: a T mobile head. So it's not funny, it's lazy,
- 11:56Speaker 1: and it's ugly to look at. Let's get back to
- 11:59Speaker 1: the plot. Shooter McGavin. He's in this mental institution. He
- 12:04Speaker 1: gets coarced to help this Maxi league and then he says,
- 12:09Speaker 1: you know what, I'm not gonna help them anymore and
- 12:12Speaker 1: does a complete baby face turn that's a wrestling terminology. Basically,
- 12:16Speaker 1: he turns into a good guy and he meets Happy
- 12:18Speaker 1: Gilmour at Virginia Vennett's gravesite. They get into a fistfight
- 12:22Speaker 1: and then they're best friends. They're best friends. They don't
- 12:26Speaker 1: have a conversation, they don't say, hey, my bed. This
- 12:29Speaker 1: guy was just in a mental institution for thirty years
- 12:32Speaker 1: because of what he did to him. And then in
- 12:34Speaker 1: the previous movie, you know, Shooter McGavin tried to steal
- 12:37Speaker 1: his grandma's house, he made fun of his friend dying,
- 12:40Speaker 1: he hired somebody to kill him, you know, by hitting
- 12:43Speaker 1: him with a fucking car, and then they just get
- 12:46Speaker 1: into a fight and then they're friends. This is as
- 12:48Speaker 1: disrespectful as killing Virginia Vennett. You're taking an established character
- 12:53Speaker 1: who's a great villain. You're turning in babyface. But there's
- 12:56Speaker 1: no real reason why. There could have been a much
- 12:58Speaker 1: bigger build up to this. Think about the Copra Chai series.
- 13:02Speaker 1: That's the perfect example of taking a villain and then
- 13:06Speaker 1: making them a good guy and you find out their
- 13:08Speaker 1: backstory and you can actually have some sort of respect
- 13:11Speaker 1: and reasoning it as to why they're a bad person. No,
- 13:14Speaker 1: they did none of that. They're just yucking it up
- 13:16Speaker 1: after getting into a fistfight. So then they joined forces
- 13:19Speaker 1: and they have to compete against the Maxi League. And
- 13:22Speaker 1: this is where people say this is when the movie
- 13:25Speaker 1: turned bad. No, the whole movie's bed. This is just
- 13:28Speaker 1: when it gets off the fucking wall. Stupid. So they
- 13:31Speaker 1: have this tournament and it's not a typical golf game.
- 13:36Speaker 1: There's you know, fireworks and rotating greens and just special
- 13:41Speaker 1: effects and lights when they shoot the ball. It's just
- 13:44Speaker 1: like I mentioned a Nickelodeon show. It looks like a cartoon.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Looks like I'm watching a fucking cartoon while watching Happy
- 13:50Speaker 1: Gilmore too. And eventually, obviously the good guys win. They
- 13:54Speaker 1: prevail and she gets to get the money to go
- 13:58Speaker 1: to ballet school. Gilmore to everybody, did I mention he
- 14:03Speaker 1: has another daughter that's in this movie, and she's in
- 14:05Speaker 1: the AA meetings with him, and she looks exactly like
- 14:09Speaker 1: his wife who's also in the movie. And she also
- 14:13Speaker 1: looks like her sister. So she appears in this AA
- 14:16Speaker 1: meeting and I go, why is the daughter in this scene?
- 14:18Speaker 1: Why she had in the AA meeting and not sitting
- 14:20Speaker 1: with her dad. I realize after five minutes ago, that's
- 14:24Speaker 1: another daughter. That's his other daughter, not playing his daughter,
- 14:28Speaker 1: just playing another person that happens to be in the
- 14:31Speaker 1: AA meeting. The AA meeting is run by Ben Siller's
- 14:36Speaker 1: character because of course he has to appear also, and
- 14:39Speaker 1: then she's actually like an FBI agent. Does any of
- 14:43Speaker 1: this make sense? The first movie is just about a
- 14:45Speaker 1: guy who plays golf to win a house for his grandma.
- 14:47Speaker 1: This has ballet school, a rival club, and then say
- 14:51Speaker 1: in asylum, fifty million different subplots the FBI, what are
- 14:55Speaker 1: we doing? It could have just been a simple story.
- 14:58Speaker 1: I didn't want a sequel. But if he made a sequel,
- 15:01Speaker 1: you just have a rematch. You just have Shooter mccalvin
- 15:03Speaker 1: versus Happy Gilmore too, make them older. It could be
- 15:06Speaker 1: funny watching like them on the Senior Tour. But they
- 15:09Speaker 1: had to go this just abstract route. Again, I just
- 15:13Speaker 1: don't get what people are watching. I how, why, when? Who? What?
- 15:23Speaker 1: What did you watch that I'm missing. There's a scene
- 15:27Speaker 1: where because they have to repeat everything from the first movie.
- 15:30Speaker 1: So in the first movie he goes to the batting
- 15:33Speaker 1: cage and he gets hit by the batting you know,
- 15:35Speaker 1: the baseballs, and they have to repeat that with the
- 15:38Speaker 1: PGA tour team sort of doing a montage and going
- 15:41Speaker 1: through all the training things that Happy he used to do,
- 15:45Speaker 1: and then bed Bunny enters the batting cage and he
- 15:50Speaker 1: does like a flip and catches the ball. Bad Bendy
- 15:52Speaker 1: plays his caddy in this movie. He's you know, doing
- 15:55Speaker 1: spins and splits and catching the ball and punching in
- 15:59Speaker 1: And who's laughing at this? Who watched that scene and said,
- 16:05Speaker 1: ha ha, that is funny. Let's have this in our movie.
- 16:09Speaker 1: It's a completely different tone of comedy from the first movie. So,
- 16:14Speaker 1: just to recap, it's ugly, it's not funny. It's completely
- 16:18Speaker 1: different sort of vibes from the first movie. Endless cameos
- 16:22Speaker 1: and nonsensical bullshit. Anyone involved in this movie should be ashamed.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Everyone that enjoyed this movie should honestly go to an
- 16:30Speaker 1: MRI and get their brain scanned because I don't think
- 16:33Speaker 1: it's properly working. So that's my review of Happy Gilmore Too.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I'm sure I'm missing other things in the movie that
- 16:38Speaker 1: I absolutely hated. I'll never watch this movie again. It's
- 16:41Speaker 1: a slap in the face to everybody that worked on
- 16:43Speaker 1: the original movie. So long, everybody, this has been film.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Real jackass.
