- 1:06Noble, and for the kindle. You can pick it up or read a
- 1:10sample at Amazon. The title is slim Incorporated. Also an announcement for those

- 1:47Philip Marlowe with Van Heflin, and there are three lost episodes between last week's
- 1:53program and this week's. This is the second adaptation of Trouble is My Business
- 2:00that NBC did during this thirteen week run. So here it is from August
- 2:06fifth of nineteen forty seven. Or the Safety of Your Smile used Pepsident twice
- 2:12a day, See your Dentist twice a year. Leber Brothers Company presents the
- 2:29Pepsident program Philip marlow starring Van Heflin, Philip Harlow, the screen's most famous
- 2:40private detective, created by Raymond Chandler, wrought for you on the air by
- 2:45Pepsident and starring MGM's Britain a dynamic young actor Van Heflin. Now, families
- 3:00all over America have named their favorite toothpaste New Pestident with arium new fresh tasting
- 3:07Petsident with a new cool netty flavor. Yes. In a recent test,
- 3:10New Pestident was preferred three to one over any other toothpaste. It's true with
- 3:16families all over America. New Pepsident is the favorite three to one. Families
- 3:22from coast to coast recently compared New Pessident with a toothpaste they were using at
- 3:27home. They preferred New Pepsident by an overwhelming average of three to one over
- 3:31any other brand they tribe. These families three to one said New Pepsident taste
- 3:37better, makes breath cleaner, makes teeth brighter. Yes. In a recent
- 3:40survey, families three to one said New Pepsidents taste better, makes breath cleaner,
- 3:46makes teeth brighter. Yes. New Peestident toothpaste for your family right away
- 3:53now. The Adventures of Philip Marlow starring Van Heflin the moment old man Peter
- 4:11came into my office, I made up my mind not to vote for him
- 4:14if he ever ran for president. He was tall and thin, with straight,
- 4:18compressed white lips. You wore a neat pinstriped flannel suit with a small
- 4:24rosebud in a lapel. He carried an ebony kene and he wore spats.
- 4:30He looked as smart as sixty and unless he's outs had got nasty. I
- 4:32gave him another fifteen years, which was pretty big of me. He sat
- 4:36down, speared me with those barbed gray eyes, and came right down to
- 4:42business. Mister Philip Montow, I believe that's right. My name is Waldsworth.
- 4:46No, how do you do, mister Jada, you're a private detective.
- 4:50Well why not, thankfully, sir. I'd expected the Hollywood Detective's office
- 4:55to be somehow more glamorous or rather more elegant. Shall we see? Now?
- 5:00Philoh Vance has a branch office here on the fourth floor. If you're
- 5:02shopping, No, no, no, you'll do I'm sure now. My
- 5:06raid is twenty five bucks a day plus expenses. Money is no object,
- 5:11except when you don't have much egy. That seems to be the motivating philosophy
- 5:14where Miss Harriett Huntress is concerned. Who or whom is Miss Harriet Huntress a
- 5:19rather standard, rather obvious gold digger who wishes to marry Grover? You want
- 5:25to tell me who Grover is? Grover is my adopted stepson, my late
- 5:29wife's son. Next year he will inherit a million dollars left him by his
- 5:33mother, which explains Miss Huntress's interest in Grover precisely. Look, mister Jeter,
- 5:40am I being hired this mere Miss Harriet Huntress, not at all merely
- 5:44to disillusion Grover about that? Well, that's the same thing. I think
- 5:46you'd better find yourself another way way. Great there's more. Okay, let's
- 5:50say, do you know a man named Mafia stell Sure he's a big time
- 5:56gambler on sensext Why Misterssteale claims my son grobo's him fifty thousand dollars and Grover'd
- 6:02better pay up if I know Mariya Still, I suppose my son doesn't really
- 6:05always tell the money, does he? Or doesn't he? Mister Estelle,
- 6:10the supplying photostat copies of Grover's notes with Grover's signatures. I thought they might
- 6:14be forced, so without Grover's knowledge, I took them to a handwriting expert.
- 6:16Mean John Albergast, a sort of detective. Now he's not sure he
- 6:23wants more time. I'd like you to take over the case. Harriet Hunters
- 6:28and all. Miss Huntress, as you may know, is associated with mister
- 6:30stell Well at Cincinnati. I'll handle the forgery kids, and not the slander
- 6:34job. Now where does this oarbagast Heavy's office on Sunset me arriva? Okay,
- 6:39I look at that Miss Hunters. She lives at the El Milano on
- 6:43North Sycamore. I don't look her up too, Haarburgast and Huntress in the
- 6:46order named, there was no snooty secretary to bring me from walking right into
- 7:00John d Arbagat's extremely fat presence on Sunset near Eyebarn. He was an enormously
- 7:08fleshy gent with a thick neck that was in fools like a concertina. He
- 7:13wore a wrinkled dark suit that needed cleaning, some reweaving where it had some
- 7:16small holes in it. Barbagats just sat and stared at me with the whites
- 7:21of his eyes, because those three holes that needed re weaving were bullet holes,
- 7:28and John d Arbagant was dead, very recently dead. I left in
- 7:32a hurry, and as far as I could tell, nobody saw me come,
- 7:35Nobody saw me go. My next stop was the swank el Milana Hotel
- 7:41on North Sycamore. Yes, the second mister, something you want? Yeah?
- 7:47No, who are you? I'm an Arstecht. Well, I'm looking
- 7:50for a miss Harriot Hunters this hundred eighty and anyone you can tell her.
- 7:55It's Madya Stelle? Are you marya Stelle? I'm from him. That's different.
- 8:00That's none of your business, is it. Whatever you're up to,
- 8:03you're not playing it very smooth, And some days I feel like playing it
- 8:07smooth. Some days. I feel like playing it like a wolf line.
- 8:09Well, if you must know, I'm one of the boys, Philip Morlow
- 8:11private eye. Yeah, it's my card. That's another story. I'll phone
- 8:16up to miss hunter Yeah, say I'm from Martiustell, and then make it
- 8:20convincing. Huh how much convincing? Oh well, how much do those cigars
- 8:26you're smoking? Costumes? Twenty two fifty box of fifty? That much convincing.
- 8:31That's cute. You and me are gonna get along. I'll phone Miss
- 8:33Hunters, but you go right all up room eight one four. I just
- 8:39know it will be all right. Harriet Hunters was too tall to be cute.
- 8:50It's too beautiful to be really cheap. Her green eyes were wide set,
- 8:56and there was plenty of thinking in between them. Her hair was a
- 8:58dusky ran like fire, seemed to a haze. The green eyes were that
- 9:03much green eyes. As she sized me up in the doorway, Well,
- 9:09what's the big message, sonny, I'd have to come in. I never
- 9:11could speak very well in public. Come in. Never could speak very well
- 9:18on the dry throat either. There's a scotch helped yourself, thank your own.
- 9:24So you're from Mariya's delf No, not strictly, not the moose races,
- 9:31not at all. In fact, what's your racket? No racket?
- 9:35Martia loves to know you used his name. I'm shaking in my shoes.
- 9:39You're some kind of detective Anto. Yeah, God, Phil the model.
- 9:46It's a good Scotchy. I'm glad you like it. Now, what's your
- 9:50business? All right? How much will you take to give up Grover?
- 9:56You look smart? He talks stupid? Oh man, Jeters pretty tough.
- 10:00His idea that you get nothing you get Smith. I don't see it that
- 10:03way. How much? How about fifty thousand dollars? About five hundred dollars?
- 10:09How about talking about the effect of the rain on the robot? Now,
- 10:11look, sister, suppose we skip the footwork, considering the sobering fact
- 10:16that a man named John d Abagast has already been murdered in this little case.
- 10:22Does that have anything to do with me? I don't know. He
- 10:26was hired to analyze some notes Grover gave Mariya Stelle, and he was killed
- 10:30just after I took over the case. Do you think Mariya Stelle works that
- 10:33way? You know him better than I do. Does he have you told
- 10:35the police. Yet now I thought i'd see if I could make a deal
- 10:39with you. First, I'm going to tell you something. My people were
- 10:45nice people who never got involved and murdered Old Jeter, ruined my father.
- 10:50My dad shot himself, and my mother died of the shock. I'm going
- 10:52to fix Youter for that someday, even if I have to marry his son
- 10:58to do it, and that it steps and really there's no relationship at all.
- 11:01It will hurt Peter just a heart, and it'll have a million dollars
- 11:07next year. I could do work, even if he does drink too much.
- 11:11You wouldn't want Grover to hear that, now, would you? No?
- 11:16Turn around and have a look, gum shoe. I turned fast.
- 11:20He stood about four feet from me, big blonde, powerful whiskey, and
- 11:26his brain and blood in his eyes. I can say anything I want around
- 11:30Grover. It's all right with him. Isn't a Grover? That's right,
- 11:33Harry. He's trying to break his up, Grover. What do you think
- 11:37of that? I think maybe I better break him up. That's what any
- 11:41good? She laughed and then made me mad. I turned the cowl at
- 11:45her. It was a dirty look. It was the look of the month.
- 11:48That was a mistake. The big guy hit me and went over sideways.
- 11:52It wasn't a hard punch with my head to hit a desk going down,
- 11:56and the desk got the decision. It gets dark fast in southern California,
- 12:01but seldom that fast. Yeah. When I came out of the grover,
- 12:13the lawn sucker Puncher and Harriet Hunters were gone. The bottle of Scotch
- 12:18was still there, so I took that for a souvenir and stuffed into my
- 12:20pocket and floated down the elevator into the street. It was dark by the
- 12:24time I got back to my apartment on Hobart Avenue in Hollywood. I turned
- 12:30on the light and there stood a big guy. Another big guy. This
- 12:35was National Big Guy Week. This one had a big nose the dead color
- 12:39of wax, and he had a twenty two caliber Coke. Woodsman pointed straight
- 12:43at me, close the door and reached com I turned a little bit close
- 12:50the door. I got my hand under my coat, then I turned back
- 12:54to waxnose fast. I had my liguor out. We stood there, facing
- 12:58each other wax nose. I didn't seem at all impressed with my automatic.
- 13:01I just came to tell you to be smile. You're looking at a looker.
- 13:05Mister. I know name of distinction, Harry Lucas me. I packed
- 13:13this small boy because I can shoot. If you think you can take me,
- 13:18go to it. A laquet'sa game and maybe you can take a hint
- 13:22and maybe you can't, maybe maybe not. What is it? Layoff old
- 13:26Jeeter's boy? When I wouldn't think of contradicting anyone who uses a coat with
- 13:33them twenty two with the front sight filed off must think he's pretty good.
- 13:37I am good. Yeah, and that's why I say, okay, now
- 13:41we'll see speaking at twenty two. Do you know anybody named John Abba Gast.
- 13:46I meet such a lot of people. Well, this one was fat
- 13:48and shot three times with a twenty two. I don't remember shooting no fat
- 13:54guys today. So long, chim. Remember what I told you, Layoff
- 14:01Glover he love Yeah, swell a shut up, yeah, mister molow oh,
- 14:16mister g there. Well, your son or your adopted son or your
- 14:18stepson or whatever he is poke me in the jaw today. He is both
- 14:22my stepson and my adopted both of them poke me in the jaw my word.
- 14:26Where in miss Hunter's apartment you spoke to her? What did she say?
- 14:30She wants fifty grand and no dies off the five hundred. This is
- 14:33a gag, just as a mister Mollow, Perhaps you underestimate the importance of
- 14:37this. Listen, listens to Jeter. There are some very unusual angles to
- 14:41this case. For example, a gunman just stuck me up in my own
- 14:45apartment and told me to stay off of this case. What and see why
- 14:48this case should get so tough heavens, Listen, mister Mollow, my chaffeur
- 14:52waldough. We'll pick you up in my limousine. I want to talk to
- 14:54you. Well, park on Hoba facing Franklin. He'll be a you mean
- 15:01good. Just give me time to drink my dinner. I sat next to
- 15:18the world. The chauffeur is the tool of Big Jeter. Limousine to Hollywood
- 15:22along the glitter of the sunset, straight out past every hills, forward bel
- 15:26Air. At Cavello Drive, we swung left for a couple of hundred yards
- 15:30and left again, aiming for a driveway flank by twelve foot wrought iron gates.
- 15:35Then something happened. Someone was standing in the glare of our headlights.
- 15:39Wall those swans slammed on the brakeshelf. Just stop it, go and get
- 15:43on the driveway. Man stepped toward us. In the next minute there was
- 15:48that same cold twenty two staring at my face again. All right, this
- 15:52is a heist. Get out of the conbos of me. Look, wax
- 15:54notes. Haven't you had enough fun for one night? Fuzz off, bumbed
- 15:58up, and get out. I have to think them more on that bust.
- 16:00I'm warning you. I'll let you have it. Don't be a goal
- 16:03you go all right, you asked for it. Hey, you shot the
- 16:11guy? Yeah, I shot him with it all in fun, Yeah,
- 16:19some fun. It did the work as Jeter's house is right ahead. You
- 16:25sound as if you just shot a nickel and a pinball machine instead of a
- 16:29man. Dollason, turn off those lights and let's get out of here but
- 16:32fast. You are listening to the Adventures of Philipolo starring Van Heffon. Yes,
- 16:48family all over America have named their favorite toothpaste, you Pepsident with invigorating
- 16:53irium foam, You fresh tasting pepsidant with a new cool Minti flavor. In
- 17:00a recent test, new Pepsident was preferred three to one over any other toothpaste.
- 17:04It's true. Families all over America say new Pepsident is their favorite three
- 17:10to one. William Kilpatrick family two twelve, South Missouri, Clairemore, Oklahoma
- 17:15prefer New Pepsident on every single count. The kill Patricks say new Pepsident tastes
- 17:21best of all, makes breath cleaner, makes teeth brighter on all these counts

- 17:30other toothpaste they tried. It's a fact. Family three to one say new
- 17:36Pepsident tastes better, makes breath cleaner, and makes teeth brighter. Remember this
- 17:41is not just our opinion, it's the honest conviction of the Killpatricks and other
- 17:45families who were asked to compare new Pepsident with the toothpaste they were using at
- 17:48home. Get New Pepsident, the only toothpaste containing rium. Get it for
- 17:53your family without delay. We continue with the Adventures of Philopolo starring Van Heflin,
- 18:07who appears by arrangement with Metro Golden There producers of the Romance of Rosie
- 18:11Ridge starring Van Johnson Well and I drove back to my apartment again, leaving
- 18:23wax Snows lying dead in the Jeter driveway. He went back to my place
- 18:27to start all over again over what was left of my purloined scotch. It's
- 18:33a good scotch. You've got tomorlow Bench bottom Not this sure, I'm interested
- 18:37from the apartment of Harriet Hunters Well bottoms up. Well, no, do
- 18:42you think that gunman was there to scare young Drover into realizing Marty's tell means
- 18:48business could be I always drove Rover home around that time. He just doesn't
- 18:53sound like Marty is tell to pick that short of a help for sure.
- 18:57Maybe that's why he picked him, because it didn't seem like Maria. Still,
- 19:02yeah, that's good thinking. Waldough Dartmouth thirty seven, Rah rah rah.
- 19:11That would be either the cuffs of mister Jeter. Hello, mister Mono.
- 19:17Yes, mister Jeter. And the reason we're not in your study now
- 19:19is lying outside of your front gate. You're saying somebody jumped us outside of
- 19:23your gate and Waller shot him dead. Oh Gord, now, miss and
- 19:26model come here it once? Do you hear it once? I'll send Waldow
- 19:30mister Jeters. I want to see you. You Waldo will tell you all
- 19:33about it, mister Jeter. Good night, mister Jeter. After Walda the
- 19:44chauffeur had left, I went back to the Almlana Hotel. Hawkins the house
- 19:48stick was all smiles and open palms. I placed no confidence in his smile
- 19:52and twenty dollars bill in his pond. Harriot hunters again. Just take me
- 20:00up to her apartment, that's all. Huh yeah, sure, right this
- 20:03way, fellow Hawkins took me to the eighth floor, room eight one four
- 20:07and opened the door. There was someone in the room waiting. Hey,
- 20:11here's company for you, Mistress Dell bead It Hawkins. Yeah, this is
- 20:15the guy I was telling you about, Mistress Dale come in earlier today.
- 20:18He said he was prem here. I said, oh sure, sure,
- 20:22come on and Mala. I came to see miss uh Hunt is not you
- 20:26Stelle. First of all, Harriet's not home. I came to tell her
- 20:30what happened outside of Jeter's game, So you keep informed, and I can't
- 20:33wait for any longer. Got to get back to the casino. Well then,
- 20:37what did you come back for, Mama? I'm looking for the Jeter
- 20:41boy after what happened during tonight, you need somebody to walk behind him,
- 20:45because I got play games like that. All I know is we were shot
- 20:48at. I asked you a question. I answered it to the best of
- 20:49my knowledge. What knowledge? For example? Well, for example, you
- 20:53hold fifty thousand dollars worth of Drover's notes for gambling bits. I've got fifty
- 21:00was invested in the kid. Would I be likely to bump him off?
- 21:03Ah? That makes sense all right, I always makes sense, some bully
- 21:07for you. When I have fifty grand invested in the guy, I have
- 21:10to find out all about him, like about old Gita hiring a man named
- 21:15harber Gas to work for him. Ah, haarbur Gas was shot today.
- 21:18You know it. I know because I had you followed. You didn't tell
- 21:23the lower model. That could be very hard on you. Well could Does
- 21:32that make you and me friend, little blackmailer? Not much? We call
- 21:37it tattletale grail mail from now and you stop bothering Miss Hunters. Hey,
- 21:47you win mighty as well. That's all I've got to go. Well I
- 21:52just wait around for that. Okay. Well, Harriet Scott is in that
- 21:55cabinet there. Thanks, roll up my pants and go waiting in it.
- 22:00You know, marlt I like you. You're cute. Maria Stale was right.
- 22:14He wouldn't kill anybody who load him money, and was soon to come
- 22:17into a lot of it. Now I was in bed with the police for
- 22:21not reporting ourbur guest murder. Well, I looked around Harriet's apartment fagery and
- 22:26walk into the bedroom. Stopped because, mixed with a fragrance of good perfume
- 22:33and good cosmetics, it was the plain, ordinary, homespun holder of gunpowder.
- 22:40I walked across the room and yanked open the closet till stepped back.
- 22:47They're just as big as life, but as dead as they ever come,
- 22:49was young Grover Jeter, And at Grover's feet. Among the graceful shoes in
- 22:56Harryet's closet was a ninety pearl handled automatic. I felt bad about that,
- 23:00because I guess that the dainty holes bullets from that dainty gun would fifty two
- 23:07dainty holes over Grover's heart. I put the neat little pistol in my pocket.
- 23:12I am I thought old man Jeter ought to know about his son.
- 23:15I thought I didn't expect to find wall of the chauffeur and Harriet Hunters with
- 23:25old Jeter and Jeter's big study. But there they were. I missed the
- 23:29model. And if I've given up hoping to see you tonight, well I
- 23:33changed my mind about coming out again, mister ju Oh, well by tomorrow.
- 23:37I didn't expect to see you, hear, Miss Hunters, didn't you?
- 23:40Did you expect to see me here? Never mind that model? I
- 23:42want to know where my son is. What do you mean, mister j
- 23:45He's missing, That's what I mean. Oh, he's missing, and no
- 23:48one knows Hitty is? I know? Hey, what's that? Miss Huntress?
- 23:53Where did you and Grover go? After Grover took that sucker punch otne
- 23:56in your apartment? We went out together and taxi. During the ride,
- 24:00I had a change of heart. I didn't want Grover or Grover's money.
- 24:06I told Grover to find another playmate and I got out in Beverly Hilt Glover
- 24:10went on in the taxi? Where did you go? Back to my apartment?
- 24:14Later? I got out my car to come down here and tell mister
- 24:17Leider I've decided to forget the whole thing. For him to call off his
- 24:21dime novels. Dime will no longer buy a novel of any description. But
- 24:25that is decided. The point you said you knew here Grover is that's not
- 24:30beside the point, is it? Mister Mundell, he's back in Harriet's apartment.
- 24:33I didn't let him in. How on earth couldn't open your architect?
- 24:36You let him in? The last I saw Grover, he's dead. Oh
- 24:40what what's that? Dead? Dead? Shot with a small caliber gun.
- 24:44I can't believe it's I can't it's Grove. It's dead, Miss Huntress.
- 24:48This twenty five caliber pistol was on the floor at Grover's seat. You take
- 24:52it, BILLI will mine. You're murderers, you you old blood and murder
- 25:00stuff. That stop it, both of you. It could have been suicide
- 25:03oicide. Well, yes, that's a possibility, of course, I see
- 25:07you like that idea, Jeter. But it wasn't suicide, and she did
- 25:11it the murderers for scheming content. It was murder, and it's fairly obvious
- 25:17who did it, Jeter. Hey, Maria Stella is my guess? Well,
- 25:19guess again. Wardoo Estelle had fifty thousand dollars invested in Grover. He
- 25:22wouldn't kill a golden goose like that and Waxnows didn't do it because he was
- 25:26dead thanks to Waldo here that he's her, she did it. There had
- 25:30to be a motive and an opportunity. Well it was her apartment after all,
- 25:33correct Wardo. But Grover was Jeter's adopted stepside more like a real son.
- 25:38He was to me a real yeah yeah yeah, But did you lovely
- 25:42people know that in the state of California, a man can inherit from an
- 25:45adopted son who has money and who gets dead. Did you know that,
- 25:48mister Jeter? Why what do you mean you're inheriting Grover's million dollars? Would
- 25:53be a motive for killing him, wouldn't it, Miss Tom. That was
- 25:56the motive, Jeter, And it was Waldo's job to find and the opportunity
- 26:00to murder Grover for you, all right, model, that'll be all for
- 26:03you. Well, Waldo, the dartmouth gunfanner, not that gun. Waldo
- 26:08shut up, said, hey, that's nice shooting Harry. Is my hand
- 26:15my hand to get a little band aid on for you? Waldo, Waldo,
- 26:18you could have gotten into my pop and wearing that Schofer's uniform off.
- 26:22You could have gone into the garage entrance and up to back way. Sure
- 26:25when Grover led him in, he backed Grove landers a room with his gun,
- 26:29but he shot him with yours. How much was Jeter going to pay
- 26:32you for this job? Don't talk all, Oh he's puffing. You're telling

- 27:56I went out a couple of times with Harriet, as I sat home
- 28:00with her a couple of times, drinking your scotch. Nice all right,
- 28:03but I didn't have the money or the clothes for the manners. Still I

- 30:22Life story was adapted by Milton Geiger from the story Trouble Is My Business by
- 30:27Raymond Chandler, creator of Philip Marlow, the screen's most famous private affection.
- 30:33The original music was composed and conducted by Lynn Murray. This is Wendell Niles
- 30:38inviting you to listen again next week at the same time to another exciting mystery
- 30:45on the adventures of Philip Marlow, starring Van Heflo with a distinguished cat.
- 31:06This is NBC, the National Broadcasting Company. Welcome back. This was a
- 31:18story where once you got to a certain point, who done it became somewhat
- 31:23predictable. A very simple process. However, it doesn't really dampen my enjoyment
- 31:30of this story. Just so much dialogue and just that all of these really
- 31:34well done, hard boiled twists. Plus I absolutely love the title. As
- 31:41a writer, I don't know what I would give to people to think of
- 31:44titles like that. Trouble is My Business tells you everything you need to know
- 31:48about Philip Marlow, just in a simple title. Trouble Is My Business was
- 31:53written in nineteen thirty nine. Originally which is the same year that The Big
- 31:57Sleep came out. Like Red Wind, the original protagonist was named John Dalmas.
- 32:05However, this would officially become a Philip Marlowe story in nineteen fifty with
- 32:12the publication of Trouble Is My Business, a Philip Marlow short story collection.
- 32:17And I don't know how to I have no insight in comparing it of the
- 32:23radio play to the book, just because I haven't gotten to that book yet.
- 32:29In my reading of Raymond Chandler, I'm up to Lady in the Lake,
- 32:34which, speaking of that for not next week, we won't be quite
- 32:37getting into the CBS version of Philip Marlow There was another Philip marlow movie that
- 32:45was adapted to radio, So we'll be bringing you the Lux Radio Theater presentation
- 32:50of a Lady in the Lake. All right, So quickly on to some
- 32:53listener comments and feedback, and just a very simple review by Samuel on iTunes
- 33:01of the app, who writes that it's very easy to use. Well,
