Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Jim Hayes alongside Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynnon who is
- 0:14Speaker 1: in a secret location with a lot of noise in
- 0:17Speaker 1: the background and a cleaned up beard. Gentlemen, you both
- 0:20Speaker 1: look great, so let's get right to it. Breaking news.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Jordan Walker, who has been through a lot and is
- 0:27Speaker 1: now a National League golf star, has confirmed that he
- 0:31Speaker 1: will participate in the Home Run Derby. I'll start with you, Lance.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Is that a good thing for Walker to do at
- 0:39Speaker 1: this juncture? Absolutely every kid streams to hit him the
- 0:43Speaker 1: home run Derby. I was going over the other day
- 0:45Speaker 1: watching Big Mac hit Pauls. I don't even know where
- 0:48Speaker 1: he was hitting him in Boston years ago, over the
- 0:52Speaker 1: Green Monster, over the Highway, old sic to sign or whatever.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I remember getting all that. Griffy had his backwards hat on,
- 0:59Speaker 1: so he gets to do that. That's every kid's stream.
- 1:02Speaker 1: So I'm all for it. Go get your home runs,
- 1:05Speaker 1: enjoy it. I mean, that's what the game's all about.
- 1:08Speaker 2: You want your guys that have twenty plus home runs
- 1:10Speaker 2: in the All Star Game, and he deserves it.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Now, there are some guys who said that their swing
- 1:17Speaker 1: got a little out of whack by being in that. Kyle,
- 1:20Speaker 1: what does that say about where Jordan Locker is mentally
- 1:23Speaker 1: that he's going to jump right into this.
- 1:27Speaker 3: I mean, I think it's something where he is just
- 1:29Speaker 3: in a good spot physically and mentally. I mean, it's
- 1:32Speaker 3: something that he's probably wanted to do, like Lance said,
- 1:34Speaker 3: And I mean, one thing that is interesting to me
- 1:37Speaker 3: is that there are people that are fans or front
- 1:40Speaker 3: office that you know, we talked about Jordan Walker getting
- 1:42Speaker 3: more launch on the ball and not hitting hard line,
- 1:45Speaker 3: driving hard ground balls and driving the ball well. I mean,
- 1:48Speaker 3: I feel like most guys when they go to the
- 1:49Speaker 3: home run they they come out of it hitting pop
- 1:51Speaker 3: ups and lazy five balls. Maybe Jordan Walker comes out
- 1:54Speaker 3: of it taking his launch angle up a couple of degrees.
- 1:57Speaker 3: You know, I think it's gonna be fun. I've seen
- 2:01Speaker 3: young guys go out there. It seems like everybody goes
- 2:03Speaker 3: out there and enjoys themselves. But the guys that are
- 2:06Speaker 3: seasoned and have a little bit of experience probably have
- 2:09Speaker 3: a little bit of an advantage because of you know,
- 2:12Speaker 3: actually going for homers at times and understanding what the
- 2:16Speaker 3: derby is. You know you've seen a few young guys
- 2:18Speaker 3: go out there and hit one or two because it's
- 2:20Speaker 3: just a little bit nerve wracking and a little tough
- 2:24Speaker 3: on him. But I hope Jordan Walker are the best man.
- 2:26Speaker 3: I hope we can see him hit some balls into
- 2:27Speaker 3: the upper deck of Citizens Bank and have some fun.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I agree with you. I'm looking forward to it. I
- 2:32Speaker 1: wanted to talk about another guy who I think is underappreciated.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Lance Andre Polante has ten wins, which is tied for
- 2:41Speaker 1: second in all of baseball three point six to oh
- 2:45Speaker 1: E Ra. He's been going deeper into games this year
- 2:48Speaker 1: than he has in the past. What do you see
- 2:50Speaker 1: him from Polante? And are we not giving him as
- 2:54Speaker 1: as a respective fan base enough love for what he's
- 2:57Speaker 1: done this season.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I think the sit down so his career makes you
- 3:02Speaker 2: not appreciate what he's becoming. To be honest with you,
- 3:05Speaker 2: early on in his career, you know there's an open guy.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Starter came back up, pitched really well out of the rotation,
- 3:11Speaker 2: we got a chance, and then last year had your
- 3:14Speaker 2: your your second year.
- 3:16Speaker 1: WOA.
- 3:16Speaker 2: It's kind of the same thing that that Libby's going
- 3:20Speaker 2: through right now. So it takes time in this game
- 3:23Speaker 2: to become what you're capable of, and these guys are
- 3:26Speaker 2: getting the opportunity and you're seeing that third full year
- 3:29Speaker 2: of starting really figuring it out. And it takes guys
- 3:34Speaker 2: time to do that. So I'm hoping Libby's on the
- 3:37Speaker 2: same path in this in general where next year we
- 3:39Speaker 2: talk about him the same way the steps that he's
- 3:42Speaker 2: taken like Blante's taken. So Blante has been counted out,
- 3:47Speaker 2: you know, not given opportunities, been shuffled around this and that.
- 3:51Speaker 2: And when you see guys finally do what they're what
- 3:54Speaker 2: they know that they're capable of, and bringing people wrong
- 3:56Speaker 2: and and becoming a bona fide star in the major leagues,
- 4:01Speaker 2: it's awesome. And you know, we all love Dre in
- 4:03Speaker 2: our own way. Drey is a special creature, but he's
- 4:07Speaker 2: figuring out he wants to be good and he's he's
- 4:10Speaker 2: starting to become somebody that can rely on every day
- 4:13Speaker 2: and that's a big, big plus for him and it's
- 4:15Speaker 2: huge for his future.
- 4:17Speaker 1: And Kyle, He's got at least six innings in four
- 4:20Speaker 1: out of his last five starts. He is doing everything
- 4:24Speaker 1: that Cardinals could ask from him.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think today. You know, we were
- 4:29Speaker 3: texting a little bit before this. I think a good
- 4:31Speaker 3: start from Dre is important. You know, we've had one
- 4:33Speaker 3: starter or one primary pitcher get past five innings in
- 4:37Speaker 3: the last seven or eight days. So the bullpen's a
- 4:40Speaker 3: little tax and there's no break coming, you know, the
- 4:42Speaker 3: Atlanta Braves come to town here and we finish up
- 4:46Speaker 3: with the Braves at home, and I think it's a
- 4:48Speaker 3: pretty important stretcher in the next four games, including today,
- 4:51Speaker 3: So and it's harder to do with a tax bullpen,
- 4:54Speaker 3: and especially a tax bullpen that just saw these hitters.
- 4:57Speaker 3: So the advantage goes to the offense in this situation
- 5:00Speaker 3: a little bit as the hitters get more looks. But
- 5:02Speaker 3: back to Dre, I feel like most pitchers that are
- 5:06Speaker 3: starters and relievers are in this bucket too. If you're
- 5:09Speaker 3: not a number one or number two, and pet's how
- 5:11Speaker 3: people look at you. You are looked at as kind
- 5:14Speaker 3: of dispensable and replaceable whenever you start to have a
- 5:17Speaker 3: bad stretch. That's just kind of how it goes. Unfortunately,
- 5:21Speaker 3: I went through it a little bit in Minnesota, even
- 5:24Speaker 3: after being you know, a first round pick and kind
- 5:26Speaker 3: of looked at as a certain way in the organization,
- 5:28Speaker 3: and then when I didn't become the bona fide ace
- 5:31Speaker 3: or the number one or the number two starter, if
- 5:33Speaker 3: I started to have a bad stretch, I was like,
- 5:34Speaker 3: all right, we got to get onto somebody else. And
- 5:36Speaker 3: I get it, I understand, But I mean, I think
- 5:39Speaker 3: Dre's kind of fallen in that a little bit is
- 5:41Speaker 3: where because he hasn't had a three three or a
- 5:44Speaker 3: three six every single year to cement himself in this spot,
- 5:48Speaker 3: He's going to go through some criticism and go through
- 5:51Speaker 3: some times where the front office or the fans might,
- 5:53Speaker 3: you know, give him a little bit of a hard time.
- 5:55Speaker 3: So really happy for him. He's been exactly what the
- 5:58Speaker 3: Cardinals needed out of him. And I would guess if
- 6:01Speaker 3: you sat down with Hims him McGreevy, those two guys are,
- 6:05Speaker 3: you know, over and above exceeding the expectations and doing
- 6:09Speaker 3: way more than the Cardinals needed them to do. Even
- 6:12Speaker 3: so that's been a good sign for them.
- 6:15Speaker 1: So the Cardinals celebrating McGreevy.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Comes with how that comes in Saint Louis right, averaged
- 6:20Speaker 2: like twelve thirteen wins in a three four of my
- 6:22Speaker 2: first six plus years in Big leagues and they wanted
- 6:24Speaker 2: me out. So some people just you know, you're not
- 6:27Speaker 2: the media darlings, and then bush you away. It's just
- 6:29Speaker 2: how it works.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Well, the media does that. You know, the media can
- 6:32Speaker 3: really do that. The media can shift the narrative on players,
- 6:35Speaker 3: and I've seen it happen time and time again. I
- 6:38Speaker 3: was actually called the Donald Trump of baseball at one
- 6:40Speaker 3: point because I was told that I wasn't coachable by
- 6:43Speaker 3: somebody in Minnesota, right, And this was kind of like
- 6:46Speaker 3: before Donald Trump kind of became who he was. This
- 6:48Speaker 3: was like before twenty eighteen. So like that's what I
- 6:51Speaker 3: was called by one of the media members. And it's
- 6:54Speaker 3: like they can change the narrative. I've seen it happen.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Let me say this, Vince Lynn never had a jersey
- 7:02Speaker 1: on sale in the team's store. They had jerseys, but
- 7:05Speaker 1: never a jersey. And I don't know there's the media
- 7:07Speaker 1: that did that. But you turn thirteen in twenty twelve,
- 7:11Speaker 1: I's the only All Star member not to have an
- 7:12Speaker 1: All Star jersey in the Deep store. So everyone wonders why.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I'm it's pretty awesome. You guys kicked me in the
- 7:19Speaker 1: sack from the gitgo, So why would not be built.
- 7:22Speaker 1: That is so great. All right. McGreevy had a birthday yesterday.
- 7:26Speaker 1: The team celebrated by doing something that hadn't done. They
- 7:29Speaker 1: gave him some run support. He won six and a
- 7:31Speaker 1: third one run ball. Here's my question. So the Cardinals
- 7:36Speaker 1: pushed back his start a couple of days. They went
- 7:39Speaker 1: through all kinds of transactional gymnastics. That's a flyover. I'm
- 7:43Speaker 1: gonna go to Kyle on this. That was at sixteen flyover.
- 7:48Speaker 1: So they went through all these different moves transactionally so
- 7:52Speaker 1: that they could give McGreevy another day, and Polante another
- 7:56Speaker 1: day and the doubleheader. You know, I didn't have their
- 7:59Speaker 1: best pictures. It was a risk that Ali and hain
- 8:03Speaker 1: knew they had to take to keep those guys in arrested.
- 8:07Speaker 1: It didn't work out the way the Cardinals had opened
- 8:10Speaker 1: in terms of winning one of those two games. Kyle,
- 8:13Speaker 1: But is it worth it to keep those two guys
- 8:15Speaker 1: who have been so good this season in a good place? Yeah.
- 8:19Speaker 3: I look back at the transactions for July and it was,
- 8:22Speaker 3: you know, a pitcher in, pitcher out, pitcher and pitcher out.
- 8:24Speaker 3: I don't think there was a single position player on it.
- 8:28Speaker 3: So Yeah, man, they're they're kind of going through it.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Like I said, that's kind of part of this starters
- 8:33Speaker 3: kind of not being you know, six seven innis consistently.
- 8:37Speaker 3: You know, Lanson's mentioned it before on this podcast. One
- 8:40Speaker 3: of the worst feelings as a starting pitcher when you
- 8:42Speaker 3: go two or three an's and it start and then
- 8:44Speaker 3: the guy that cleans up after you, he's possibly the
- 8:47Speaker 3: one getting sent down for somebody new and there is
- 8:49Speaker 3: there's no worse.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Feeling than that.
- 8:51Speaker 3: So yeah, I mean, I think you have to do
- 8:54Speaker 3: that for some of these guys. You know, they gave
- 8:56Speaker 3: Dustin May an extra day. You have a little bit
- 8:59Speaker 3: of depth down there to do that. You know, a
- 9:00Speaker 3: hundred Dobbins is a guy that can come up and
- 9:02Speaker 3: make starts and throw really well. So they have the
- 9:06Speaker 3: ability to do it. So when you have options for guys,
- 9:10Speaker 3: you just tend to use them, and you tend to
- 9:12Speaker 3: do the best for the overall seasonal health of these guys.
- 9:17Speaker 3: And the Cardinals have been fortunate with that health. So
- 9:19Speaker 3: excuse me, I'm not going to give them too much black. Yeah,
- 9:22Speaker 3: I'd love to not see you know, get swept in
- 9:25Speaker 3: a double header and kind of you know, have a
- 9:27Speaker 3: bullpen game or do something like that. But sometimes you
- 9:30Speaker 3: got to do those things and the overall overall picture,
- 9:34Speaker 3: grand picture of it, but you know they're in the
- 9:35Speaker 3: middle of a twenty two games in twenty two days.
- 9:38Speaker 3: I mean, that's that's a lot. So if you can
- 9:40Speaker 3: move back a starter and you feel like it's going
- 9:41Speaker 3: to help them going forward here, you know in this
- 9:44Speaker 3: next four or five games, you know, a good start
- 9:48Speaker 3: from Plante right now would really reward that decision today
- 9:51Speaker 3: and then really set this bullpen up for having a
- 9:53Speaker 3: couple of shorter days and a good weekend series against
- 9:57Speaker 3: the Breams.
- 9:58Speaker 1: And keeping this the orders that have been doing it
- 10:01Speaker 1: as healthy as they can. The Cardinals have done a
- 10:04Speaker 1: good job of managing that's starting rotation, keeping them out
- 10:07Speaker 1: of harm's way. We're gonna take a quick break here.
- 10:10Speaker 1: You are watching Cardinal Territory on the Foul Territory Network.
- 10:14Speaker 5: It's summertime. You know what we do at FT we
- 10:15Speaker 5: look for hacks. How can we feel like we can
- 10:18Speaker 5: do it all outside with something that's breathable, something that
- 10:22Speaker 5: feels premium FABLETICX hooks us up. I've got the cloud
- 10:25Speaker 5: Jersey t it is super soft crats. But it works
- 10:28Speaker 5: at the gym, it works when I'm on the show,
- 10:31Speaker 5: it works when I'm going to meetings. It is the
- 10:33Speaker 5: true super utility player.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Same here. Difference is I got the nice stripe across,
- 10:39Speaker 4: so you can have style and also have versatility because
- 10:45Speaker 4: you know what, I'm gonna go to the gym probably
- 10:47Speaker 4: in the same stuff that I'm gonna have my meetings in,
- 10:49Speaker 4: and the same stuff that I'm gonna go out and
- 10:51Speaker 4: have breakfast in. So you know what. This is where
- 10:53Speaker 4: Fabletics got me and Kratz.
- 10:55Speaker 5: Everyone can shop now at fabletics dot com slash fal
- 10:58Speaker 5: to get seventy to eighty percent of everything when you

- 11:08Speaker 5: don't wait again. That's Bathletics dot com slash foul for
- 11:11Speaker 5: seventy to eighty percent off everything as a new VIP.
- 11:14Speaker 1: In game two of Tuesday's doubleheader, Brian Torres, a position
- 11:18Speaker 1: play was called into pitch because the game is getting
- 11:21Speaker 1: out of hand. Never a good thing when your team
- 11:24Speaker 1: has to go with a position player pitching. We get
- 11:27Speaker 1: that he threw two scoreless innings. He said someone threw
- 11:31Speaker 1: them told him how to throw a quick cutter before
- 11:33Speaker 1: he went out there, and he did well, throwing forty
- 11:38Speaker 1: fifty miles an hour, small sample size. My curiosity about
- 11:43Speaker 1: that was everyone seems to be having fun because you
- 11:46Speaker 1: have to do a position players pitching as a pitcher.
- 11:50Speaker 1: When you see that lance, what are you thinking because
- 11:52Speaker 1: you've been through that where suddenly your third basement is
- 11:55Speaker 1: out there on the mountain or whatever it may be.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Yeah, judy base because they're usually your pomecasts. It's always
- 12:02Speaker 2: the twenty sixth man ish a guy on the team
- 12:05Speaker 2: to make sure they don't get her. But I mean
- 12:08Speaker 2: as a let's say, if you're the starter who gives it,
- 12:11Speaker 2: gives it up that day to make that makes a
- 12:13Speaker 2: position player pitch, you made it. If you're the team
- 12:15Speaker 2: that's winning and the other position players out there are
- 12:18Speaker 2: having a good time, so be it. I've been a
- 12:21Speaker 2: part of it, or position player guys feeling hurt because
- 12:23Speaker 2: somebody hit an on run off of them. So you
- 12:26Speaker 2: know it can go any way you look at it. Really,
- 12:28Speaker 2: So if you're winning the game, it's fun. If you're
- 12:31Speaker 2: losing the game and you're in a good stretch and
- 12:32Speaker 2: it just kind of happens. It's fun if you're a
- 12:35Speaker 2: season long of a sucking and it happens quite a bit.
- 12:39Speaker 2: It's a mistery. So there's so many different ways to
- 12:41Speaker 2: look at it. But it can be fun for the
- 12:43Speaker 2: fans because you can get three outs throwing any way possible.
- 12:48Speaker 2: It's what that briefs.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Was it fun for you, Kle when you saw a
- 12:52Speaker 1: position player pitching.
- 12:56Speaker 3: I mean, I've heard people talk about in you know,
- 12:58Speaker 3: CBA negotiations, don't want to see position players at all.
- 13:01Speaker 3: You know, you have to use a pitcher only.
- 13:05Speaker 4: I don't know. I think it was always fun.
- 13:07Speaker 3: I think the interesting part of it was always being
- 13:10Speaker 3: on the side that has the position player pitching. Because
- 13:13Speaker 3: you're in the dugout, you're trying not to smile, you're
- 13:16Speaker 3: trying not to enjoy yourself because you're probably getting your
- 13:18Speaker 3: tailkicked a little bit. But at the same time, I
- 13:21Speaker 3: feel like when you look down and your manager is
- 13:25Speaker 3: enjoying the moment as much as they can and it's
- 13:27Speaker 3: not straight faced mad and upset at the world, I
- 13:31Speaker 3: think that can really kind of loosen the guys up
- 13:32Speaker 3: a little bit. Let's face it, not every day is
- 13:34Speaker 3: going to be your best day. Every now and then
- 13:37Speaker 3: you're going to give up a bunch of runs as
- 13:38Speaker 3: a pitching staff, and you're going to find yourself in
- 13:40Speaker 3: a hole. And a position player goes out there and
- 13:43Speaker 3: eats two innings and gives up one hit, and it's
- 13:46Speaker 3: really coming in the locker room talking about how easy
- 13:48Speaker 3: pitching it. So that's normally what I dealt with. The
- 13:51Speaker 3: position player comes in and says, see, guys, it's that easy,
- 13:54Speaker 3: and then all the pitchers kind of get upset. But
- 13:58Speaker 3: a couple of instants, I thought, cherry hitting left handed
- 14:01Speaker 3: people think that that makes a mockery of it. The
- 14:03Speaker 3: mockery and the joke is already that a position position
- 14:06Speaker 3: player is having to pitch. So for a guy to
- 14:09Speaker 3: go up there and hitt left handed and hit the
- 14:10Speaker 3: ball three hundred and sixty feet is awesome. The goal
- 14:13Speaker 3: here is to get the game over and not use
- 14:16Speaker 3: another starter. So why not go up there and see
- 14:18Speaker 3: what you can do left handed or something without getting hurt,
- 14:21Speaker 3: or send a pitcher up there to swing and not
- 14:23Speaker 3: get hurt. I don't know a good story that I
- 14:26Speaker 3: did have though, was Trevor Poof One time We're facing
- 14:30Speaker 3: the Tigers and Andrew Romine came on to pitch for
- 14:34Speaker 3: the Tigers, and Trevor Proof feasted on Andrew Romind. I
- 14:38Speaker 3: don't know if it was a two or three of homer,
- 14:40Speaker 3: but absolutely statued him and pimped the home run off
- 14:44Speaker 3: a position player, and he really caught some flak for
- 14:47Speaker 3: the team from his own team US for really showing
- 14:54Speaker 3: up another position player and really enjoying that homer a
- 14:57Speaker 3: little bit. So it can be fun, but like I said,
- 15:01Speaker 3: it's definitely a whole lot more fun whenever you're the
- 15:03Speaker 3: side that is hitting against the position player.
- 15:06Speaker 1: It's a situation forced on everyone. Try to have one.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I saw Yati, who is as locked in as anyone
- 15:13Speaker 1: pitching in a game and giggling and then after the
- 15:15Speaker 1: game tried to downplay it, but he kept the ball
- 15:18Speaker 1: that first out he got. He kept the ball for
- 15:21Speaker 1: his man cave or shelf of mementos. Can lance can
- 15:27Speaker 1: a picture of standard pitcher like yourself who probably grew
- 15:31Speaker 1: up being the best athlete player on any team they
- 15:34Speaker 1: were on. Can they go and play short stop or
- 15:37Speaker 1: second base? Can pitchers return the favor and take over
- 15:41Speaker 1: for a position player. I've seen it, just not very often.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Can they?
- 15:47Speaker 2: Yes, Now the question is will they be any good footballs?
- 15:50Speaker 4: Hit two?
- 15:50Speaker 2: That's the question they had to ask. I would say
- 15:54Speaker 2: right field, left field, first base, probably in the infield
- 15:57Speaker 2: position you can get away with, and then yeah, that's
- 16:01Speaker 2: pretty much it. But if you're saying, hey, I need
- 16:03Speaker 2: you to go play a quality short soup, No, but
- 16:06Speaker 2: every position players black pitching, and you have a pitcher
- 16:09Speaker 2: at shorts up you know by that time, but it
- 16:11Speaker 2: doesn't matter. So I guess that you know they'll catch
- 16:13Speaker 2: things that are hit at them for the most part,
- 16:15Speaker 2: So yeah, spend A pitcher can build a position to
- 16:18Speaker 2: fit if they need a.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Jim Lance looks like the first baseman to meet, Kyle.
- 16:23Speaker 1: What position could you jump in in a pinch as
- 16:26Speaker 1: a pitcher if your team needed you to play a position.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Give me in the outfield. They'll be fine. Parashagged a
- 16:34Speaker 3: lot in my day. There were times where I was
- 16:37Speaker 3: probably you know, this is maybe a little a little
- 16:40Speaker 3: not quite humble, but I think I might have been
- 16:42Speaker 3: the third best outfielder on a couple of teams that
- 16:44Speaker 3: I was on, So yeah, I would have. I probably
- 16:49Speaker 3: would have selfishly paid a lot of money to get
- 16:51Speaker 3: a couple of big beginnings in the outfield. That was
- 16:54Speaker 3: definitely a career goal of mine to go out there
- 16:57Speaker 3: and when a position players pitching a hoopful of shagg
- 16:59Speaker 3: at fly. But if you're asking me to play any
- 17:03Speaker 3: position on the field as good and as with as
- 17:07Speaker 3: much effort as Torres pitched, then I can play any
- 17:10Speaker 3: position with that type of effort. If I'm not expected
- 17:14Speaker 3: to be great, just like Lance said, put me anywhere,
- 17:17Speaker 3: And I think any pitcher can go out there and try,
- 17:20Speaker 3: because that's really all you're asking that position player to
- 17:22Speaker 3: do is go out there and try. Now, if you're
- 17:24Speaker 3: expecting some level of excellency, my best bet is in
- 17:29Speaker 3: one of the corner roundfield spots. But I said this
- 17:33Speaker 3: quite a bit toward the end of my career. I
- 17:36Speaker 3: shortstop was my first love, and until I got to
- 17:39Speaker 3: high school and got too slow and grew a little bit,
- 17:42Speaker 3: I played it all the way up till my junior
- 17:44Speaker 3: year of high school. And I would trade probably a
- 17:47Speaker 3: few years of my big league career if I could
- 17:49Speaker 3: have seven or eight years as a shortstop and then
- 17:53Speaker 3: in an above average shortstop.
- 17:55Speaker 4: You know it was.
- 17:55Speaker 3: It was my first love, like I said, and I
- 17:58Speaker 3: really really loved it.
- 18:01Speaker 1: That's very cool. No one says you have to go
- 18:03Speaker 1: in and be excellent. Just conquet it.
- 18:05Speaker 4: Just then put me. I'm in.

- 19:14Speaker 1: So I'm on the social media a little bit and
- 19:17Speaker 1: I'm seeing some former players jump in and talk about
- 19:22Speaker 1: velocity and the velo that the pictures have in the
- 19:25Speaker 1: modern game of baseball. And they were saying, look, I
- 19:28Speaker 1: don't know if they use different radar guns, but there
- 19:31Speaker 1: were always guys that could throw one hundred miles an hour.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Maybe they didn't show it every time, but they were
- 19:38Speaker 1: complaining that there always have been pictures that threw really hard.
- 19:41Speaker 1: So I'm going to start with you on this lance.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Do you see more guys now that have the ability
- 19:48Speaker 1: to throw one hundred or do you see more guys
- 19:50Speaker 1: who will throw one hundred all the time because that's
- 19:54Speaker 1: how they're taught.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I think both, to be honest with you, I think
- 19:59Speaker 2: more guys are brought up to try to throw bard
- 20:02Speaker 2: and more guys throw as hard as they can on
- 20:05Speaker 2: a consistent basis. We're proud and I came up and
- 20:08Speaker 2: we're taught to sink it and cut it, take the
- 20:09Speaker 2: ball move. Now they're trying to throw riding forcing or
- 20:13Speaker 2: at one hundred miles an hour as hard as they
- 20:15Speaker 2: can every pitch, and that's what they've been practicing since
- 20:18Speaker 2: they were twelve thirteen years old. So I think that
- 20:21Speaker 2: we're seeing more throwers throw one hundred. Back in the day,
- 20:24Speaker 2: there was more pitchers throwing the under than there are now.
- 20:27Speaker 2: But everybody that does it under and now for the
- 20:29Speaker 2: most part it's throwers. So to answer your question, there are,
- 20:32Speaker 2: it's both, but they've always been around and they usually
- 20:35Speaker 2: were just closers. Nowadays starters can do it too. Where
- 20:39Speaker 2: that was that was kind of unheard of. Now I
- 20:40Speaker 2: think I think the starters throwing a hundred what's never
- 20:43Speaker 2: real back then where it is now?
- 20:46Speaker 1: And Kyle, you know, the training methods have gotten better
- 20:50Speaker 1: humans as a species getting bigger, faster, stronger, although there's
- 20:55Speaker 1: a been an obesity problem with the people that are
- 20:58Speaker 1: media guys. But do you see guys are just now
- 21:03Speaker 1: better athletes or better physically to throw a hundred or
- 21:07Speaker 1: is that part of the training and also the way
- 21:11Speaker 1: they're brought up with they're taught let it eat.
- 21:15Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 21:15Speaker 3: I mean I think that definitely has something to do
- 21:17Speaker 3: with it on the starter side for sure, with the
- 21:20Speaker 3: letity mentality and throw every pitch as hard as you can.
- 21:24Speaker 3: You know, sat and listened to Sunny Gray, you know,
- 21:26Speaker 3: talk a lot about that. He wanted to throw every
- 21:28Speaker 3: pitch as a power pitch and throw it hard because
- 21:31Speaker 3: the harder slider is normally better. So the starter mentelli
- 21:34Speaker 3: has definitely changed. I think there was still guys that
- 21:37Speaker 3: threw a hundred, you know, two or three decades ago.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Do I think as many teams had this number of
- 21:45Speaker 3: guys that did it? Probably not, But I think that
- 21:49Speaker 3: would be like saying, you know, you look at the
- 21:51Speaker 3: one hundred meters dash right now. Have there always been
- 21:54Speaker 3: this many guys that can break ten seconds? I don't
- 21:56Speaker 3: think so. So I mean I think as humans, you know,
- 22:00Speaker 3: athletic training has gotten better. And that's not to take
- 22:04Speaker 3: anything away from other generations. And this is coming from
- 22:06Speaker 3: a guy that never even got close to one hundred,
- 22:08Speaker 3: So I think I can say this. I just think
- 22:10Speaker 3: there's more arms that have that ability.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Then.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Do I think Nolan Ryan through as hard as Miserowski?
- 22:19Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Though I think it matters. Not really. I think it's
- 22:22Speaker 3: fun to hear about how hard Nolan Ryan throw Bob
- 22:25Speaker 3: Gibson through, and you know, cool to see Jacob Mizerowski
- 22:27Speaker 3: doing it as well. So, but it sure seems like
- 22:31Speaker 3: as radar guns have changed and picked up the speed
- 22:34Speaker 3: closer to the pitcher, we have definitely gotten more guys
- 22:38Speaker 3: throwing one hundred. So I'm sure that has something to
- 22:41Speaker 3: do with it. But I think we'd be probably a
- 22:44Speaker 3: little bit naive to think that if every other sport
- 22:48Speaker 3: is getting faster serves in tennis or faster runners in track,
- 22:52Speaker 3: that we wouldn't have more faster throwers in baseball. It
- 22:56Speaker 3: just seems natural to.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Me, makes sense. Last last, is MLB too obsessed with VLO?
- 23:04Speaker 2: I mean, that's what all the cool kids are talking about.
- 23:07Speaker 2: It's like when they went with the Chickstig Go long
- 23:09Speaker 2: Ball in the late nineties, right when Colin and I
- 23:12Speaker 2: were going up. We made us love baseball again, right,
- 23:14Speaker 2: So you've gotta have something that school and something that
- 23:16Speaker 2: the kids are like, man, one day I want to
- 23:19Speaker 2: do that. So I would say, no, they're not obsessed
- 23:22Speaker 2: with it. Are they putting too much emphasis on it, because, yes,
- 23:27Speaker 2: not the only way to get out, maybe because there's
- 23:29Speaker 2: a lot of different ways to get out from the
- 23:31Speaker 2: big leaks. But if you can throw a hundred, I
- 23:33Speaker 2: mean it's cool to talk about. O's for sure, Kyl.
- 23:36Speaker 2: And I never did it, so that's probably why if
- 23:38Speaker 2: I sit here and said, hey, I threw one hundred
- 23:41Speaker 2: what fifty eight times to the start, I'm probably gonna
- 23:44Speaker 2: tell you about it. But I didn't, So yeah, it
- 23:47Speaker 2: is cool to talk about.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Kyle. You're an old school guy. Do you enjoy watching
- 23:53Speaker 1: miss Rowski or whoever throw one hundred and four miles
- 23:56Speaker 1: an hour? Because I got a mid I do.
- 23:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think I still enjoyed. If I
- 24:03Speaker 3: had to pick, and I haven't seen much of Misrowski, right,
- 24:07Speaker 3: But if I had to pick, and I could pick
- 24:09Speaker 3: between Skins and Miserwski, I would probably pick Skeens because
- 24:15Speaker 3: I like how Skeens works the.
- 24:16Speaker 4: Ball to the plate.
- 24:17Speaker 3: I likes how I like how he reads hitters, and
- 24:20Speaker 3: and he's still a pitcher. And that's not saying Misrawski
- 24:23Speaker 3: is not a pitcher, right. I haven't seen enough of
- 24:25Speaker 3: him to really go in depth on what he does.
- 24:28Speaker 3: He he might have a great idea of what he's
- 24:30Speaker 3: trying to do out there, and his command and pitchability
- 24:33Speaker 3: might be off the charts. I haven't seen a lot
- 24:34Speaker 3: of it, but just hearing from what hitters have said
- 24:38Speaker 3: about Paul Skins, that's what he does, pitchability and one hundred.
- 24:43Speaker 3: You know, I think seeing a guy light up the
- 24:45Speaker 3: radar gun is a lot of fun. But I also
- 24:49Speaker 3: still really enjoy watching a guy. Uh not to pick
- 24:53Speaker 3: on Michael mcgree because he doesn't that be a little
- 24:54Speaker 3: bit because I was in the same boat, but I
- 24:56Speaker 3: think personally I like to watch a guy navigate a
- 24:59Speaker 3: lineup like that, and I think it frustrates hitters a
- 25:02Speaker 3: lot more because they see guys like that as hittable.
- 25:06Speaker 3: And you know, the Taquin lance. When I were still
- 25:09Speaker 3: playing and early in our career, more was like, man,
- 25:12Speaker 3: where's the guys throwing eighty eight to ninety You know,
- 25:14Speaker 3: that's what hitters wanted to see when starters were throwing
- 25:16Speaker 3: ninety four to ninety five. You know, Now it's like, man,
- 25:19Speaker 3: where's the guy throwing ninety four to ninety five? That's
- 25:22Speaker 3: who I want to see instead of a guy throwing
- 25:24Speaker 3: one hundred. But man, I like to sit and watch
- 25:27Speaker 3: a guy like McGreevy, like Plante, like Liberator who go
- 25:31Speaker 3: out there and know how to pitch and use their stuff.
- 25:33Speaker 3: And but I think I've said this before on this podcast,
- 25:38Speaker 3: the Minnesota Twins for the end of my career, you know,
- 25:41Speaker 3: they were pretty big on trying to get more guys
- 25:43Speaker 3: that threw hard and trying to add Villa because they
- 25:45Speaker 3: were a pitch to contact organization for a long time
- 25:48Speaker 3: and they wanted to add Villa because in their mind,
- 25:50Speaker 3: every mile an hour on your fastball was like point
- 25:53Speaker 3: three off of your ern. So and just like Sonny
- 25:56Speaker 3: Gray said from his time in Minnesota, if you can
- 25:58Speaker 3: throw your slighter harder, it's probably gonna be a better slagger,
- 26:01Speaker 3: take away decision making time, and it's going to help
- 26:04Speaker 3: you as a picture. So it's hard to argue that
- 26:06Speaker 3: velocity doesn't help a picture. But I definitely like watching
- 26:09Speaker 3: the guy, you know, work through a lineup and work
- 26:11Speaker 3: both sides.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Good stuff, good stuff. That's going to do it. For
- 26:15Speaker 1: this edition of Cardinal Territory, We'll see you next time.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Hopefully that episode won't suck
