- 3:02Speaker 1: into the business. NAS and DJ Premire have finally have
- 3:08Speaker 1: finally mostly this is coming from Premiere as of this recording,
- 3:15Speaker 1: have finally put a date on their long awaited, anticipated
- 3:21Speaker 1: and all mabated maybe who knows album is dropping December twelfth.
- 3:29Speaker 1: It is the last album in the mass appeal seven Icons,
- 3:35Speaker 1: seven Legends, or maybe it's the other way around. Whatever
- 3:39Speaker 1: rollout of music that has for the most part been good.
- 3:47Speaker 1: So NAS in Premiere on December twelfth is when we'll
- 3:51Speaker 1: get the final album. And you know, I'll have a
- 3:55Speaker 1: special episode coming up once this album dropped too, obviously
- 4:03Speaker 1: review it, but also to review the whole rollout. You know,
- 4:09Speaker 1: what were some of our favorite albums? You know, what
- 4:12Speaker 1: did we think about the overall rollout? What would we
- 4:16Speaker 1: like to see in another rollout?
- 4:18Speaker 2: Right?
- 4:19Speaker 1: Is it another seven? You know who would that be?
- 4:22Speaker 1: So stay tuned for that that'll be coming in December.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Big review of the album and the rollout I mean,
- 4:31Speaker 1: I mean the NAS and Premier album in the rollout.
- 4:33Speaker 1: But he's my quick thoughts as far as as far
- 4:36Speaker 1: as like how things are feeling as we head into
- 4:40Speaker 1: that album. Hold on, let me let me tweak, Let
- 4:43Speaker 1: me tweak the look real quick, y'all. Boom lighting, Let
- 4:48Speaker 1: there be light for our video, for our video watchers.
- 4:56Speaker 1: How I feel headed into a December twelfth release of
- 4:59Speaker 1: a non the Premier album.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Let's just go back just a little bit.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I was never a hip hop fan who like craved
- 5:10Speaker 1: a Nasen Premier album.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Now I know when you look.
- 5:15Speaker 1: At if you fast forward back, Nasen Premier couldn't miss
- 5:20Speaker 1: right when you think about what Premier produced on Illmatic
- 5:26Speaker 1: right represent New York state of Mind. New York State
- 5:30Speaker 1: of Mind probably my favorite record on Illmatic right. Then
- 5:35Speaker 1: over the years, the songs that Premier has produced with
- 5:40Speaker 1: Nas like Nas is like you know what I'm saying.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Even New York State of Mind Part two was kind
- 5:44Speaker 1: of crazy, and I think Premier did that.
- 5:49Speaker 2: So they they have a history. You can name a
- 5:52Speaker 2: number of songs they've.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Done, you know, in the nineties for the most part
- 5:58Speaker 1: that were crazy, that had people craving an album that's
- 6:03Speaker 1: all Nas and Premiere. How could that be whack? But
- 6:09Speaker 1: it never happened and literally decades past decades and now
- 6:19Speaker 1: that we have it announced and it's happening. I'm a
- 6:24Speaker 1: little skeptical. I'm not gonna lie, and I'm gonna tell
- 6:27Speaker 1: you why. It's a couple of variables.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:29Speaker 1: One, that's probably a little bit of pressure, and I'm
- 6:33Speaker 1: not talking about anybody who are haters.
- 6:36Speaker 2: It's probably a little bit of pressure to.
- 6:41Speaker 1: At least match the level that Nas and hip Boy collaborated, right,
- 6:47Speaker 1: regardless of what you may feel. When I heard the
- 6:51Speaker 1: beat to Speechless, I was like, my God, And that
- 6:55Speaker 1: ain't the only beat that's tough that hip Boy produced.
- 7:00Speaker 2: For Nas during that run.
- 7:01Speaker 1: But when I heard that alone, I was like, Yo,
- 7:05Speaker 1: hip Boy got a bag, so it would be only right.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Nas in Premier, are you're crazy? Of course that's going
- 7:13Speaker 1: to be crazy. And then they put out a song
- 7:16Speaker 1: to announce it, and the song was cool.
- 7:19Speaker 2: It was cool.
- 7:21Speaker 1: It felt like it could be something. But all my
- 7:25Speaker 1: doubt doesn't come from everything I just said. For the
- 7:28Speaker 1: most part, most of it comes from the fact that
- 7:32Speaker 1: DJ Premier is he's kind of like stuck in a
- 7:36Speaker 1: lane right now. I'm not saying he's stuck in the nineties,
- 7:40Speaker 1: of course not. And for his track record, so what right,
- 7:46Speaker 1: But there was a time where DJ Premier. You couldn't
- 7:49Speaker 1: predict his beats at all. You didn't know what you
- 7:53Speaker 1: were going to get. And most of the time, if
- 7:55Speaker 1: not one hundred percent of the time, it was crazy.
- 7:58Speaker 1: But in recent years, except for maybe Prime, and that
- 8:03Speaker 1: was because he was sort of being challenged, he has
- 8:08Speaker 1: a very predictable style nowadays. And I'm not gonna lie.
- 8:13Speaker 1: The minute I hear it, I'm almost like defeated. And
- 8:17Speaker 1: this is a crazy sample, but it's it's always put
- 8:23Speaker 1: together in a very similar way.
- 8:25Speaker 2: And that was never Premier.
- 8:26Speaker 1: So anybody who will say, yo, this is what Premier do,
- 8:29Speaker 1: No no, go back and listen to Gangstar. You can
- 8:32Speaker 1: listen to one album. Premier could do the majority of the
- 8:36Speaker 1: majority of the beats on any album you pick, except
- 8:39Speaker 1: for that first one, mister Knight's got no No, don't
- 8:43Speaker 1: pick that one. Okay, Premier will tell you don't pick
- 8:46Speaker 1: that one, but you didn't. You couldn't predict them beats.
- 8:51Speaker 1: They all sound different, and Premier was on the boards.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Guru did some stuff too, but as far as what
- 8:56Speaker 1: Premier did, it was not predictable at all. You can
- 9:00Speaker 1: even look at, okay, what he did for Nas in
- 9:03Speaker 1: his heyday, none of those beats sound the same. Represent
- 9:06Speaker 1: don't sound like New York state of Mind. New York
- 9:08Speaker 1: state of Mind, don't sound like NAS is like right,
- 9:12Speaker 1: but now every time it doesn't matter what artist he's with,
- 9:17Speaker 1: typically including that announcement song. With NAS, there's a certain
- 9:22Speaker 1: included in this day album. There's a certain style that
- 9:26Speaker 1: he's comfortable with. So when he makes beats, they they're predictable.
- 9:32Speaker 1: The rhythm of it is predictable. It could be a
- 9:34Speaker 1: new sample, it could it could be a number of
- 9:37Speaker 1: things that are different from that beat versus this beat,
- 9:42Speaker 1: but the rhythm is always going to be in a
- 9:45Speaker 1: specific pocket. And I know there's some people you're not
- 9:49Speaker 1: really music fans like that, so you don't hear it.
- 9:52Speaker 1: You're not really uh that deep with hip hop, And
- 9:55Speaker 1: that's cool also, right, Like maybe just want something dope.
- 10:00Speaker 2: I'm with you.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I think that's the least he can do, is just
- 10:03Speaker 1: give you something dope. But this is nas in Premire,
- 10:08Speaker 1: long awaited album, awaited since the nineties, making Magic together
- 10:14Speaker 1: as a duo for decades.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Now.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Granted I say decades, but Nasa ain't really use Premier
- 10:25Speaker 1: in decades really, to be honest, go back and listen
- 10:28Speaker 1: to the last. However, many albums Premire don't have a
- 10:32Speaker 1: track on them. Okay, So it's one of those things
- 10:36Speaker 1: where I know what to expect from Premier production wise,
- 10:42Speaker 1: but I kind of don't because there has to be
- 10:46Speaker 1: something in Premier that says, Okay, I did this album
- 10:51Speaker 1: with worse to five nine two albums called Prime well received.
- 10:57Speaker 1: My production wasn't typical of what I typically do nowadays
- 11:02Speaker 1: when I make a beat, and people were receptive to that.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I've had beats here and there that are kind.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Of my formula, and a few here and there that
- 11:12Speaker 1: kind of stood out because they were actually different. And
- 11:18Speaker 1: NAS and hit Boy just put out six projects in
- 11:21Speaker 1: what two and a half years or something like that,
- 11:24Speaker 1: and they generally they're all well accepted generally speaking. I'm
- 11:32Speaker 1: DJ Premier, this is NAS. We did this big role
- 11:37Speaker 1: out with all these MC's. Most of it was flames.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Damn there, ninety nine point nine percent of it was flames. Okay,
- 11:47Speaker 1: we are the finale. I can't give him just the
- 11:53Speaker 1: boom boom bit record with a different baseline sample and
- 11:58Speaker 1: the scratch of whatever what the name of the song is.
- 12:01Speaker 1: I can't do that on every record. I have to
- 12:05Speaker 1: have people lean into the speaker and say, permitted did this.
- 12:08Speaker 1: He's still in his bag.
- 12:11Speaker 2: It has to happen.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Look what Havoc did, Look what Pete did on this
- 12:18Speaker 1: New day line. There's been there's been some phenomenal Look
- 12:24Speaker 1: what Pharrell did with the clips. It's time for Primo
- 12:29Speaker 1: to be like, there's a reason why I'm known as
- 12:33Speaker 1: the guy over here. I am the doctor Dre of
- 12:36Speaker 1: the East Coast. So it's time to show up. But
- 12:44Speaker 1: I'm optimistic, so we'll see. So again, Are you excited
- 12:49Speaker 1: for nas in premiere? Leave your comments in a comments
- 12:53Speaker 1: section below. Do you agree about Primo's more recent beats.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Do you feel like there's a formula? Are you fine
- 13:01Speaker 1: with having an album full of beats that follow that formula?
- 13:06Speaker 1: Leave your comments in a comments section below. Next, we're
- 13:11Speaker 1: just talking about albums today, y'all. So Stove God Cooks
- 13:16Speaker 1: has a new album coming out, and if you've been
- 13:19Speaker 1: watching my show, you know that already because I talked
- 13:24Speaker 1: about it not too long ago. But now we have
- 13:27Speaker 1: some concrete information regarding his follow up to his classic
- 13:34Speaker 1: album Reasonable Drought. If you don't know who Stove God is,
- 13:38Speaker 1: or you just heard them on the Clips and you
- 13:40Speaker 1: said reasonable drought and you hear me calling it a classic.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Go plus Go, Go Plus Go press play slipping today,
- 13:49Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, Bars not slipping, Okay, but
- 13:53Speaker 1: I'm just saying. I'm just saying, once you press play,
- 13:58Speaker 1: you know what I mean. But what's what's been weird
- 14:02Speaker 1: for most fans of that album in particular, which I
- 14:06Speaker 1: believe dropped in twenty twenty or twenty twenty one one
- 14:09Speaker 1: or the other is there was never a follow up,
- 14:13Speaker 1: and that was because there was a dispute with the
- 14:16Speaker 1: label and he wound up signing to Griselda, but he
- 14:20Speaker 1: couldn't release an album.
- 14:21Speaker 2: He couldn't release his own music.
- 14:23Speaker 1: So that's why for the last couple of years, including
- 14:27Speaker 1: the Clips album, you've heard Stove God do hooks, and
- 14:32Speaker 1: sometimes the hooks are long, like a verse, right, so
- 14:36Speaker 1: it's almost like he has a verse, but it's the hook.
- 14:40Speaker 1: But we want the album now. There was an EP
- 14:47Speaker 1: that he released but it was quickly shut down called
- 14:52Speaker 1: stop Calling Me I'm Cooking, and a song with a
- 14:57Speaker 1: Marvin Gaye sap I believe it's called Marvin.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Like was released or leaked or whatever.
- 15:04Speaker 1: From that project not that long agough and you know
- 15:07Speaker 1: everybody loved it. But when I tell you, because I
- 15:09Speaker 1: had that project, I was able to get it before
- 15:11Speaker 1: it was pulled. It was crazy, right, it was. It
- 15:17Speaker 1: is crazy.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Now.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I don't know if some of those songs will be
- 15:20Speaker 1: on this album. I mean, considering when he dropped that EP,
- 15:25Speaker 1: it was gone in like a week or so where
- 15:28Speaker 1: he couldn't sell it anymore. I would like to think
- 15:33Speaker 1: that some of those songs will find their way onto
- 15:36Speaker 1: his new album, which is scheduled to be released in
- 15:40Speaker 1: February of twenty twenty six. I think February twenty seventh
- 15:44Speaker 1: or something like that, and it's called Goat Stamp. Now,
- 15:52Speaker 1: I know there's a single release in this month and
- 15:55Speaker 1: probably has released by the time I'm recording this episode.
- 15:58Speaker 1: And I'll just say this, I feel like Stove God
- 16:04Speaker 1: has momentum that may or may not be hard to recapture.
- 16:12Speaker 2: In the next year, let alone in February.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Now, I know this is a contractual obligation. This is
- 16:20Speaker 1: his last album on Baby Graham, which I assume was
- 16:24Speaker 1: the label he had to dispute with, which also makes
- 16:28Speaker 1: me a little scared because don't give them the dud
- 16:33Speaker 1: because I like the fact that this dude's momentum off
- 16:37Speaker 1: that clips feature had people who didn't even know who
- 16:41Speaker 1: he was anticipating him, and it made me feel like
- 16:44Speaker 1: it's going to happen now. It's very clear, like I
- 16:48Speaker 1: said in my previous episode, that jay Z is the
- 16:51Speaker 1: guy who gets you off your deals, because it felt
- 16:55Speaker 1: like Stove God was never getting out this deal.
- 16:58Speaker 2: And why do I say that?
- 16:59Speaker 1: Once I see you in rock Nation and all of
- 17:01Speaker 1: a sudden, now you got an album dropping. Hove did okay,
- 17:05Speaker 1: he did something, Hoe did something okay. Like he did
- 17:09Speaker 1: it for the Clips, he's doing it for Stove God.
- 17:11Speaker 2: So I am.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Hopeful he's had a lot of time to build music.
- 17:20Speaker 2: I hope they select some of his finest work.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I hope he has so much dope music that even
- 17:28Speaker 1: this album with Baby Grand is enough to make keep
- 17:34Speaker 1: the hype going. Basically, and again, I know a singles
- 17:38Speaker 1: getting ready to drop, but like in the last segment,
- 17:42Speaker 1: so is nas in premiere and whoever else may drop
- 17:47Speaker 1: in between the time of Stove God finally releasing his
- 17:50Speaker 1: second album, official album in February. So I'm definitely hopeful
- 17:57Speaker 1: I'll keep listening to the music I have anticipating a
- 18:01Speaker 1: new single. I wish it was still coming out in November,
- 18:06Speaker 1: but whatever, we can wait.
- 18:09Speaker 2: You know, there'll be like.
- 18:11Speaker 1: A whole holiday, you know, best of the year, like
- 18:14Speaker 1: once we hit January, things that feel like it's dried
- 18:19Speaker 1: up when it comes to hip hop, and you may
- 18:22Speaker 1: get a notable release or two in January, but that's
- 18:27Speaker 1: just you know, maybe that's what will make it dope.
- 18:30Speaker 1: That Stove God is dropping by the end of February,
- 18:35Speaker 1: and you know we'll see. So are you a Stove
- 18:39Speaker 1: God Cooks fan? Are you finally as happy as I
- 18:43Speaker 1: am that he has an official album dropping? It's February
- 18:47Speaker 1: too far for you, I don't know. Leave the comments
- 18:52Speaker 1: in the comments section below, And last listen, man, you
- 18:59Speaker 1: saw the title that episode. I am not one of
- 19:02Speaker 1: those old heads that only gets excited for old rappers
- 19:09Speaker 1: or old well let me not say that. Let me
- 19:13Speaker 1: stop saying old, but no, this is how people would
- 19:15Speaker 1: look at it. Old rappers, albums by old rappers, new
- 19:20Speaker 1: albums by old rappers, Like I'm not one of those
- 19:23Speaker 1: guys who thinks the music's good just because of what
- 19:26Speaker 1: they've done in the past. You are being judged by
- 19:30Speaker 1: what you release today because you're still active.
- 19:34Speaker 2: I don't think any MC.
- 19:38Speaker 1: And I hope not feels like you should like their
- 19:41Speaker 1: music because of they what you've liked in the past.
- 19:44Speaker 2: That's just not how it works. Now.
- 19:47Speaker 1: You don't have to be disrespectful to the legends, but
- 19:51Speaker 1: they should be critiqued fairly. And that's what I'm here
- 19:55Speaker 1: to do. So you know what I do when it
- 19:57Speaker 1: comes to reviewing albums. I give them three listens. The
- 19:59Speaker 1: first it's just to get my impressions. The second listen,
- 20:02Speaker 1: now I'm listening a little deeply to what's being presented, lyrics, beats, skits,
- 20:08Speaker 1: how everything works together, concept, theme, whatever. And then my
- 20:12Speaker 1: last listen is just to confirm my thoughts. And Dayla
- 20:17Speaker 1: Soul's brand new album Cabin in the Sky, just for
- 20:21Speaker 1: those who need a quick review. His flames fire hot
- 20:30Speaker 1: almost unexpected but also expected.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Now.
- 20:36Speaker 1: I say that because when Daylat Soul and first of
- 20:41Speaker 1: all recipes todave True Goyd to Dove, but when day Soul,
- 20:47Speaker 1: you know it's having like the Tommy Boy dispute with
- 20:49Speaker 1: streaming and remember when they had I think it was
- 20:53Speaker 1: a kickstarter for their next album that wound up being
- 20:57Speaker 1: nominated for a Grammy, But to most Daylight fans, it
- 21:00Speaker 1: was whack, including me. And what was whack about it?
- 21:06Speaker 1: It was two different from what we were accustomed to.
- 21:12Speaker 1: And not to say that rappers who've been rapping for
- 21:15Speaker 1: as long as they have and releasing albums through decades
- 21:19Speaker 1: and generations, that they have to stick to a formula.
- 21:24Speaker 1: But there was something unique about Daylight Soul's choice and
- 21:29Speaker 1: beats choice in subject matter, bars, guest appearances that we
- 21:36Speaker 1: were just accustomed to. And you don't need to roll
- 21:40Speaker 1: out the red carpet for all the people you used
- 21:43Speaker 1: to rock with and keep making songs with them until
- 21:47Speaker 1: the end of eternity. You can bring new people on
- 21:50Speaker 1: your project. Like with that album, they had two Chains
- 21:53Speaker 1: on it, but two Chains had the best verse, and
- 21:57Speaker 1: that's not a bad thing.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Two change. When he in the hip hop element, he
- 22:01Speaker 2: get busy. He just does.
- 22:03Speaker 1: He just happens to do traps sometimes. But when he
- 22:06Speaker 1: in the hip hop element, he show up. And that
- 22:10Speaker 1: was telling, like, Yo, this day La Soul album isn't
- 22:13Speaker 1: what I thought it would be. And damn two Chains
- 22:16Speaker 1: got busy, Like I'm a little disappointed, and we know
- 22:19Speaker 1: they got a Grammy nom but they could have got
- 22:23Speaker 1: that for a number of albums in a catalog that
- 22:25Speaker 1: was just as good, I mean, well not just as good.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Better.
- 22:30Speaker 1: So now we bring you to Cabin in the Sky
- 22:33Speaker 1: and we know that Dave, you know, one of the trio,
- 22:39Speaker 1: passed away not too long ago. Everybody wondered what this
- 22:43Speaker 1: album would sound like, would Dave be featured, And this album,
- 22:48Speaker 1: Cabin in the Sky is basically dedicated to Dave in
- 22:53Speaker 1: a lot of ways. Who does obviously appear on this
- 22:56Speaker 1: album rapping. He's the first rapping verse you hear on
- 23:00Speaker 1: this album. But it's done in such a classy way
- 23:06Speaker 1: it didn't make It's similar to the Mob Deep situation.
- 23:11Speaker 1: The Mob Deep album didn't necessarily make me sad that
- 23:16Speaker 1: Prodigy wasn't here. It made me proud to be a
- 23:18Speaker 1: Mob Deep fan because it was like, even with our
- 23:22Speaker 1: brothers still, you know, even with our brother not here,
- 23:26Speaker 1: we can still give you one last good Mob Deep
- 23:29Speaker 1: album and meaningful and it doesn't sound like, you know,
- 23:34Speaker 1: a memorial service situation.
- 23:37Speaker 2: That's how I feel like with Dave.
- 23:39Speaker 1: It's just done in a way where you know, the
- 23:42Speaker 1: obvious but Daylight Soul came to get busy. So the
- 23:48Speaker 1: album has twenty tracks, some of which are skits.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Some skits are tacked.
- 23:54Speaker 1: On the end of songs or in the beginning, twenty
- 23:59Speaker 1: songs were in ten minutes.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Now hold up, don't get up. I'm just like you.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Sometimes when I hear that, I'm like, Yo, twenty an
- 24:08Speaker 1: hour and ten, I don't know if I have that time.
- 24:11Speaker 2: I made time. And when I tell you.
- 24:16Speaker 1: It's worth it, it's worth to listen some of the
- 24:19Speaker 1: guest appearances as you some of what you know Yummy Bingham,
- 24:25Speaker 1: y'all know her right from so much More like I
- 24:28Speaker 1: love that record. She's featured on Here a lot, Killer
- 24:31Speaker 1: mic is here, Q Tip is on this album. Now
- 24:34Speaker 1: is as you know, Black Thought comments Slick Rick blau
- 24:39Speaker 1: Star studied Affair. What I like about this album, just
- 24:45Speaker 1: to kind of round things out, is Daylight Soul is
- 24:50Speaker 1: kind of known for skits. They kind of burst the
- 24:54Speaker 1: eror of having a lot of skits on your album
- 24:56Speaker 1: back in the day. And I'm not the biggest fan
- 25:00Speaker 1: of skits today as long as put it this way,
- 25:05Speaker 1: I'm not the biggest fan if the skits are like
- 25:09Speaker 1: meaningless to what's happening right, similar to ray kuon skits
- 25:15Speaker 1: right on his new album The Emperor's New Clothes. Except
- 25:20Speaker 1: for maybe one skit, those others could have gone they're meaningless,
- 25:24Speaker 1: like they just don't match the opening skit.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Perfect, but the others was like.
- 25:31Speaker 1: You didn't really necessarily need these, Whereas on Supreme Clientele Too,
- 25:36Speaker 1: I felt like a lot of those skits fit the
- 25:39Speaker 1: tone of the album, and the same thing goes for
- 25:42Speaker 1: this with day La Soul. You start out with an intro. Wait,
- 25:47Speaker 1: who's on the intro? Because I don't want to you know,
- 25:49Speaker 1: we have a tendency to say the characters the actor played.
- 25:54Speaker 1: But let's say the actor's name, Gianna Carlo Esposito. Okay,
- 26:01Speaker 1: you know him from Breaking.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Bad School Days. You know what I'm talking about.
- 26:07Speaker 1: The Mandalorian, you know, who is as a teacher in
- 26:12Speaker 1: a class taking attendance, and he's checking attendance and everybody
- 26:17Speaker 1: who he's whose names he's calling answers right, Nas, Pete, Rock,
- 26:23Speaker 1: DJ Premier nots right, Q tip everybody, and then he
- 26:31Speaker 1: ends with you know, is PA's here?
- 26:34Speaker 2: And Pod says what he says, you know.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Like he ends with day La Soul, but he really
- 26:40Speaker 1: ends with Dave, is Dave here, and he says his
- 26:44Speaker 1: name a couple of times, and then the next song
- 26:46Speaker 1: hits and it's Dave rapping.
- 26:49Speaker 2: I thought that was really dope.
- 26:51Speaker 1: And I also like, you know, just to skip to
- 26:54Speaker 1: the end how they ended by thanking Dave. But it's
- 26:59Speaker 1: the teacher thanking him, and so it's a nice way
- 27:03Speaker 1: to say. You know, you were saying, Dave, he's not here.
- 27:08Speaker 1: We know that, right, we know he passed away, he's
- 27:11Speaker 1: not here, but at the end the teacher thanking him
- 27:14Speaker 1: and saying thank you, Dave says he was present. And
- 27:19Speaker 1: if you listening to the whole album, the Present, especially
- 27:24Speaker 1: a certain couple of songs where they, you know, the
- 27:27Speaker 1: members of the Day I Soul speak directly to Dave,
- 27:31Speaker 1: that's what they kind of say. He's with us. We
- 27:33Speaker 1: rather have him here with us, but he's with us,
- 27:36Speaker 1: he's guiding us, he's keeping us, he's keeping us warm.
- 27:40Speaker 1: So to hear that at the end, after hearing you know,
- 27:45Speaker 1: the teacher called for Dave and to begining several times,
- 27:51Speaker 1: just to have at the end to say he's present,
- 27:54Speaker 1: I just thought that was a nice touch. That was
- 27:56Speaker 1: just dope, right. But all in all, album wise, most
- 28:03Speaker 1: of the beats just hit. I mean when I say most,
- 28:06Speaker 1: I mean damn.
- 28:07Speaker 2: They're all.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Variety, boom back soul like it just hits. There were
- 28:14Speaker 1: times where I got a little scared, I ain't gonna
- 28:15Speaker 1: front where I heard, you know, old soul samples, you know,
- 28:21Speaker 1: not hip hopped up. You know, they weren't chopped up
- 28:25Speaker 1: for hip hop. They were primarily those samples where I
- 28:29Speaker 1: was like, yeah, I don't want to dance, you know,
- 28:32Speaker 1: I like the original record, but it's kind of throwing
- 28:36Speaker 1: me off.
- 28:36Speaker 2: But then I realized they're not long. In some ways.
- 28:40Speaker 1: They're used as interludes or innstitials for those who know,
- 28:45Speaker 1: to kind of get you or segues right to kind
- 28:48Speaker 1: of get you from one rhythm one thought from a
- 28:52Speaker 1: song to another, right, but still meaningful, but where it's placed.
- 28:59Speaker 2: And I thought that was a nice touch.
- 29:01Speaker 1: So, you know, obviously, listening multiple times, it didn't bother me.
- 29:06Speaker 1: It was just initially I'm like, it's just going to
- 29:08Speaker 1: be the record and everything goes downhill from there.
- 29:12Speaker 2: And that wasn't the case now for those who are
- 29:16Speaker 2: keeping score.
- 29:18Speaker 1: When you think about the Pete Rock production versus the
- 29:22Speaker 1: DJ Premier production. It's not a contest. For one, I
- 29:26Speaker 1: mean that in two ways, double Ontandre. It's not a
- 29:30Speaker 1: contest to pick these two legends together. But also it's
- 29:34Speaker 1: not a contest. It's Pete Rock. Pete Rock's production as
- 29:39Speaker 1: you saw with the song would or the album the
- 29:41Speaker 1: Auditorium Volume one would common. It's not predictable. It's just
- 29:48Speaker 1: not You have to hear him talking or hear somebody say.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Pete Rock, where we at? But blah blah blah.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Whatever, and then we know, oh, pe Rock did to
- 29:59Speaker 1: be unless we go look. But if you just going
- 30:03Speaker 1: off of listening, I could spot the Premier beats. Like
- 30:07Speaker 1: I said earlier, I could spot them Clare's Day once.
- 30:10Speaker 2: They hit and they weren't that bad to me.
- 30:13Speaker 1: They just was like, oh, this is cool Premire, this
- 30:15Speaker 1: is what Premiere does. But when I first heard what's
- 30:19Speaker 1: the joint the package, I'm going to say pause for
- 30:23Speaker 1: the kids in the room. When I first heard that,
- 30:28Speaker 1: it made me smile. It felt good, Like the first
- 30:32Speaker 1: time I heard Award Tour. I was like, damn, Trip
- 30:35Speaker 1: is back and Daylight and Dave is on the hook.
- 30:40Speaker 1: This feels good. Check the rhym used to feel good
- 30:43Speaker 1: when I heard that come on, like just good, like
- 30:47Speaker 1: like how people be like yo, you know hip hop
- 30:49Speaker 1: soul Like nah, there's some people who really make hip
- 30:52Speaker 1: hop so that give you the same feeling when you
- 30:55Speaker 1: hear it, and the package sound like that. So again,
- 31:00Speaker 1: and this album is one of the best of the year,
- 31:05Speaker 1: and with my Best of the Year episode coming up,
- 31:09Speaker 1: I have a lot of work. There are a lot
- 31:13Speaker 1: of albums that are worthy of being in my top
- 31:16Speaker 1: five or even just being mentioned as best of the year.
- 31:20Speaker 1: But in the last let's say, three or four months,
- 31:24Speaker 1: I've had to move things out because something better was
- 31:30Speaker 1: made available. So have you heard Dayla Soul's brand new album,
- 31:35Speaker 1: Cabin in the Sky. Leave your review down in the
