- 0:00Hey everyone-welcome back to The Science of Leading.
- 0:02I'm Claire Monroe, here with my co-host,
- 0:04Edwin Carrington.
- 0:05And today...
- 0:06whew, we're diving into a big one.
- 0:08Something I feel like every manager or HR person has wrestled with at
- 0:12some point: how do you actually know if someone's a good fit for your
- 0:15team?
- 0:15Yeah, Claire-it's a question I've heard for,
- 0:18I mean...
- 0:19decades.
- 0:20And the real answer?
- 0:21It's not in the résumé.
- 0:23Or the interview.
- 0:24Those are, like, surface-level.
- 0:26I've met candidates who looked incredible on paper-crushed the interview-and
- 0:31then once they were on the team,
- 0:32it was just...
- 0:33oil and water.
- 0:34The skills were there, sure.
- 0:36But the chemistry?
- 0:37Completely off.
- 0:37Oh yeah-been there.
- 0:40You bring someone in, they seem suuuper sharp,
- 0:43super polished...
- 0:44and then, a couple months in, you're like,
- 0:46"Huh.
- 0:47This is...
- 0:47not going how we thought." Maybe they don't gel with the group,
- 0:51or just can't handle pressure the way you hoped.
- 0:53Do you have a specific story that sticks with you?
- 0:53Oh,
- 0:56I've got a few.
- 0:57But one that comes to mind-we'll call him "Tom." This guy had everything
- 1:02on paper.
- 1:03Solid experience, strong credentials,
- 1:05and he was, honestly, pretty charming.
- 1:08Interview panel loved him.
- 1:09But within a few weeks, we started seeing problems.
- 1:13He'd kind of steamroll meetings,
- 1:15shut down quieter voices...
- 1:16the team dynamic went south.
- 1:19Fast.
- 1:20Morale dropped.
- 1:21Productivity dipped.
- 1:22And the worst part?
- 1:24Even after he left, it took months to rebuild the trust and momentum.
- 1:24Ughhh.
- 1:29That's so rough.
- 1:30And that's the part people don't always see,
- 1:32right?
- 1:32Like-it's not just about finding a replacement.
- 1:35It's the time you lose, the way it messes with the team vibe,
- 1:38and just...
- 1:39how draining it is to fix all that.
- 1:41Why do you think those red flags are so easy to miss early on?
- 1:41Because
- 1:45traditional hiring focuses on what someone's done-not who they are.
- 1:49Résumés are polished.
- 1:51Interviews are practiced.
- 1:52And even experienced managers get pulled in by confidence or a good story.
- 1:57But none of that tells you how someone's gonna act under pressure-or
- 2:01whether their values line up with your culture.
- 2:03And when you get it wrong?
- 2:05Yeah...
- 2:06the cost isn't always dramatic,
- 2:09but it's always expensive.
- 2:09So if résumés and interviews aren't enough...
- 2:12what should leaders be looking for?
- 2:14Like, how do you spot those hidden traits before it's too late?
- 2:14You've
- 2:18gotta dig deeper.
- 2:19Look at behavioral traits, how someone communicates,
- 2:22what they value.
- 2:24That's the stuff that drives real performance.
- 2:26And most of it?
- 2:27You won't see it in a one-hour interview.
- 2:29That's where tools like assessments come in-but we'll get to that in
- 2:33just a sec.
- 2:33Okay-sooo, let's talk assessments.
- 2:37I've heard of things like OAD's quick-fit survey,
- 2:39but I'm still a little fuzzy on what it actually does.
- 2:42Can you walk us through what it looks like in real life?
- 2:45Like, what kind of stuff does it reveal that you wouldn't catch in a
- 2:48regular interview?
- 2:48Sure.
- 2:50Think of it like this: your résumé tells me what you've done.
- 2:53But a fit assessment?
- 2:55That shows how you're likely to do it-and why.
- 2:58OAD's is just a couple pages, takes a few minutes.
- 3:02But it's backed by, like, decades of research.
- 3:06You get a read on someone's behavior patterns-how they deal with pressure,
- 3:10how they communicate, what drives them...
- 3:13and whether that fits with your team's culture.
- 3:16It's not about replacing interviews.
- 3:18It's about adding depth-and objectivity.
- 3:18So let's say someone's super
- 3:23detail-oriented, but also kinda introverted...
- 3:25and the role needs constant teamwork in a fast-paced setting.
- 3:28That mismatch would pop up before you hire?
- 3:28Exactly.
- 3:32And here's the cool part-it's not just about screening out the wrong
- 3:36fit.
- 3:36Sometimes, you find someone who doesn't quite work for Role A...
- 3:40but turns out to be perfect for Role B.
- 3:43I've seen companies use these assessments to reassign people internally,
- 3:48lower their turnover, even boost team morale.
- 3:51Because when you actually understand how someone ticks...
- 3:55you can coach them, support them,
- 3:57and place them where they'll thrive.
- 3:57That's awesome.
- 4:00Do you have, like, a real-life example of a company that actually saw
- 4:03a difference after using this stuff?
- 4:03Yeah-I worked with a mid-sized tech
- 4:07firm.
- 4:08Their analyst team was just...
- 4:09churning.
- 4:10High turnover, low energy.
- 4:12They started using behavioral assessments-not just for new hires,
- 4:16but also to rethink how they were using existing talent.
- 4:19Within a year, their retention improved,
- 4:22the vibe totally shifted.
- 4:23People were in roles that fit.
- 4:25It wasn't magic.
- 4:26It was just...
- 4:27understanding people better.
- 4:27I love that.
- 4:30And it's not just about avoiding the wrong hire-but actually building
- 4:34a team that just works.
- 4:35But okay, here's my skeptic hat-do you ever worry these tools are too
- 4:40rigid?
- 4:40Like, what if someone's a great culture fit,
- 4:43but the assessment doesn't reflect that?
- 4:43Totally fair question.
- 4:46No tool is perfect.
- 4:48And assessments shouldn't be the only thing you rely on.
- 4:51They're a guide-not a gatekeeper.
- 4:54The best leaders use them alongside real interviews and gut instinct.
- 4:58It's all about getting the whole picture-not just a score on a page.
- 4:58Alright,
- 5:02zooming out a bit.
- 5:03Once you do find the right fit-how can these assessments help with long-term
- 5:07growth?
- 5:08Like...
- 5:08is this just a hiring thing, or is there more to it?
- 5:08There's way more.
- 5:12When you understand someone's behavioral fit,
- 5:15you can coach them better, plan for promotions,
- 5:18even move them into roles that align with their strengths.
- 5:21One org I worked with?
- 5:24They used assessments not just for hiring,
- 5:27but for ongoing development.
- 5:28Over time, turnover dropped, morale went up...
- 5:32and people started really owning their strengths.
- 5:35The whole culture shifted.
- 5:36People felt seen, not just...
- 5:39assigned a desk.
- 5:39That's cool.
- 5:41So it's not just "get them in the door," but actually help them grow.
- 5:45But here's something I wonder-how do you balance raw talent with cultural
- 5:49fit?
- 5:50Like, what if someone's so skilled,
- 5:52but their style just doesn't click with the team?
- 5:52Yeah,
- 5:55that's the tough one.
- 5:56Talent's important-but if someone's values or work style clash with the
- 6:00culture?
- 6:01It's gonna be friction from day one.
- 6:03Sometimes you can coach them into alignment,
- 6:05sure.
- 6:05But more often, it's about placing them in an environment where they'll
- 6:09naturally thrive.
- 6:10I'd take a team that collaborates well over a room full of solo stars
- 6:14any day.
- 6:15Skills and fit-that's what smart leaders aim for.
- 6:18And data helps you get there faster.
- 6:18Totally.
- 6:21I mean, it's not about hiring a bunch of clones.
- 6:23It's about building a team that respects each other-and works toward
- 6:27the same goal.
- 6:27And honestly, that's what keeps people around,
- 6:29right?
- 6:29Exactly.
- 6:31When people feel like they belong,
- 6:33they stay.
- 6:34They grow.
- 6:35They bring their best.
- 6:36That's the real ROI.
- 6:36I love that.
- 6:39And if you're curious how this works in your company,
- 6:41you can check it out at o-a-d-dot-a-i.
- 6:45Their behavioral assessments are quick,
- 6:47super insightful, and honestly?
- 6:49Just a really smart way to build stronger teams.
- 6:52Alright-that's a wrap for today.
