Speaker 1: AB's legend. Tana Umanger has reportedly been picked by Dave
• 0:03
Speaker 1: Rennie to be assistant coach phase two of the coaching reset.
• 0:07
Speaker 1: Elliott Smith News Talks said, be rugby commentator, the voice
• 0:09
Speaker 1: of rugby with us this morning, Morning.
• 0:10
  Speaker 2: Elliotto, Morning Ryan.
• 0:12
Speaker 1: Just so, do we know this or we think this?
• 0:15
Speaker 2: We think this? Look, this has been a name tanah
• 0:17
Speaker 2: among a banded about pretty much ever since, said Dave
• 0:19
Speaker 2: Whenny got the job last week on our Rugby podcast
• 0:23
Speaker 2: and Sky's Rugby shows. And I think that that confirmation
• 0:27
Speaker 2: is getting a little bit closer on the basis of
• 0:29
Speaker 2: some of those reports yesterday. Not really surprised that Tanna
• 0:32
Speaker 2: Humonger would be involved. Strong connection to Dave Rennie, played
• 0:36
Speaker 2: under Dave Rennie for Wellington and the NBC going back
• 0:40
Speaker 2: twenty five years now, but there's a strong connection there.
• 0:43
Speaker 2: So not officially confirmed. I'm hearing perhaps next week that
• 0:46
Speaker 2: the official announced on will we made around the assistant coaches,
• 0:49
Speaker 2: but seems more likely than not now that Tanna Umonger
• 0:52
Speaker 2: will be one of them.
• 0:53
Speaker 1: What about Neil Barnes.
• 0:55
Speaker 2: Yeah, he's right in the mix as well, and he's
• 0:58
Speaker 2: a coach that's worked with Dave Rennie at the Chiefs
• 1:01
Speaker 2: for a number of seasons during that very successful tenure,
• 1:05
Speaker 2: then went back to Tartanaki. So we're seeing out the
• 1:07
Speaker 2: basis of Dave Rennie's coaching team beginning to form. Ryan
• 1:10
Speaker 2: Neil Barnes will be there is my understanding kind of
• 1:14
Speaker 2: umanger obviously very very close as well. There's other names
• 1:17
Speaker 2: that have been mentioned. Mike Bleer, who works with Dave
• 1:20
Speaker 2: Rennie currently in Kobe, Scottish attack coach, likely to join
• 1:25
Speaker 2: the set up. Andrew Strawbridge, who again has worked with
• 1:28
Speaker 2: Dave Rennie in plenty of places including the Chiefs before,
• 1:31
Speaker 2: likely to be there as well. And then probably Jason
• 1:35
Speaker 2: Ryan is likely to be the only survivor of the
• 1:37
Speaker 2: previous All Blacks regime that will keep a job under
• 1:40
Speaker 2: this new setup of Dave Rennie. So the more we're
• 1:43
Speaker 2: hearing about it, Ryan, the more it sounds like it's
• 1:45
Speaker 2: going to be a complete clear out of the assistant
• 1:47
Speaker 2: coaches under Dave Rennie for this new All Blacks regime.
• 1:50
Speaker 1: And what does that tell you, Elliott about what his
• 1:54
Speaker 1: plan is and of those names that you have mentioned,
• 1:57
Speaker 1: what style he's going for?
• 1:59
Speaker 2: Well, I think he's going to want to play a
• 2:01
Speaker 2: heads up attacking style of football, but also need to
• 2:04
Speaker 2: balance that with the way that international rugbies then played.
• 2:06
Speaker 2: I don't think we can see the Dave Renny styles
• 2:08
Speaker 2: that we saw at the Chiefs working twelve years ago
• 2:11
Speaker 2: work at an international rugby because international rugby has changed
• 2:14
Speaker 2: so much in that time. But he's put himself around
• 2:17
Speaker 2: a lot of coaches that he works with you across
• 2:20
Speaker 2: a number of clubs, has strong relations with and can trust.
• 2:23
Speaker 2: And we saw in the last setup that you know,
• 2:25
Speaker 2: there was fallouts with different assistant coaches that didn't quite
• 2:28
Speaker 2: work out. He's surrounded himself with people that he knows
• 2:30
Speaker 2: he can work with, knows or believes that they can
• 2:33
Speaker 2: get the best out of and deliver the All Blacks,
• 2:35
Speaker 2: you know, World Cup win next year. So it'll be
• 2:37
Speaker 2: interesting to see what portfolios each of them take. I'd
• 2:39
Speaker 2: suspect Dave a ton of Umonger would probably look at
• 2:42
Speaker 2: a defense portfolio. That's where he's worked with, specifically with
• 2:45
Speaker 2: the Blues previously, currently Mwana Pacifica's head coach and your
• 2:49
Speaker 2: Barnes likely to be around the Fords and maybe a
• 2:51
Speaker 2: little bit of attack as well. But that's going to
• 2:53
Speaker 2: be interesting to see how they divvy up those portfolios
• 2:55
Speaker 2: once it's all said and done.
• 2:57
Speaker 1: Good Onya al L. Smith Newstalk zb's Voice of Rugby.
