- 0:00As summer continues to heat up.
- 0:01We look under the hood of the US economy to bring the insights
- 0:04that business owners need to know.
- 0:06My name is Paul Hsiao
- 0:07and I'm part of the asset allocation team as UBS CIO.
- 0:10While the current economic regime is still in reflation, where
- 0:13growth and inflation are above trend, we expect both growth
- 0:17impulse to cool in the second half of the year,
- 0:19and for disinflation trends set to continue.
- 0:22We expect the broad consumption
- 0:23trend to slow in the second half of the year.
- 0:25And there's growing evidence of a K-shaped economy.
- 0:28So upper-income owners appear to be driving increasing
- 0:31share of consumption, helped by buoyant financial markets.
- 0:34And we observe that happening in both macro and micro trends.
- 0:38For example, upper end hotels are outperforming
- 0:41lower end hotels, and the same thing is true for retailers.
- 0:45Yet spending for other consumers
- 0:47may slow as the labor market broadly remains in a "no-hire
- 0:50no-fire" environment, which is putting downward pressure on wages.
- 0:53The latest CPI report confirmed
- 0:55two trends that we're seeing both positive.
- 0:57The first is that the peak of tariff-related inflation
- 1:00implemented last year.
- 1:01Appears to be behind us as well as tariff
- 1:04related goods continue to show an ease in prices.
- 1:08And the second thing,
- 1:09which is also good for policymakers,
- 1:10is that we're seeing energy prices continuing to moderate
- 1:14and stabilize,
- 1:15as we're seeing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East
- 1:18continue to decrease.
- 1:19And barring a re-escalation in tensions,
- 1:22we expect that trend to continue
- 1:24through in the second half this year.
- 1:26So for policymakers as we've seen from this chart here,
- 1:29they've penciled in a rate hike this year
- 1:31because they think inflation will remain above trend.
- 1:33And that's something that new Chair Warsh really wants to combat.
- 1:37While we don't think that one inflation print is enough
- 1:40to change the overall picture, it does give us confidence about
- 1:43the underlying narrative of a cooling inflation environment.
- 1:46And thus we're increasingly confident of our out of
- 1:49consensus call
- 1:50for rate cuts to begin next year, rather than the market's
- 1:54priced-in rate hikes
- 1:55that are expected supposed to start at the end of this year.
- 1:58So regarding the midterms elections, we expect the Democrats
- 2:01to take the House while it's still about 5050.
- 2:05Regarding the Senate, with slight odds
- 2:07favoring the Republicans of holding it regardless of the outcome,
- 2:10we think that the expectation should be for a divided government,
- 2:13which historically
- 2:14has been robust for risk assets as well as the overall economy.
- 2:18One thing to watch out
- 2:19for, in
- 2:20our point of view, is for greater regulation over AI companies,
- 2:23and since it's become an increasingly bipartisan issue.
