• 2:33
Speaker 2: Thanks for being on the show today. Now get some
• 2:36
Speaker 2: big news about your organization, about your facility. We'll get
• 2:39
Speaker 2: that a little bit later on, but first of all,
• 2:41
Speaker 2: for those who may have not heard you on the
• 2:43
Speaker 2: show before, Dick or Johnny, the one of you. Dick,
• 2:46
Speaker 2: we'll start with you. Jump in there. Tell us about
• 2:48
Speaker 2: this organization that you have, sure, Dave.
• 2:51
Speaker 4: The canav Valley Fellowship Home is a men's sober living
• 2:54
Speaker 4: facility that is right next door across the parking lot
• 2:58
Speaker 4: actually from WCCHS. We've been a sober living We're the
• 3:04
Speaker 4: oldest one in state of West Virginia. We've been we
• 3:06
Speaker 4: were started in nineteen sixty seven as an outreach mission
• 3:09
Speaker 4: of the First Presbyterian Church, which is also in this
• 3:13
Speaker 4: block on the other end on the Leon Sullivan Way,
• 3:16
Speaker 4: and we help men. Originally it was a halfway house
• 3:19
Speaker 4: for men that suffered from alcoholism, and it's morphed into
• 3:25
Speaker 4: a big sober living facility that helps men overcome the
• 3:29
Speaker 4: component after treatment or incarceration. The sober living component is important,
• 3:34
Speaker 4: the sober living and the aftercare part. But we provide
• 3:37
Speaker 4: those services to help people, to give them the time
• 3:40
Speaker 4: for them their minds to heal and their bodies to heal,
• 3:44
Speaker 4: and to get into a program of action where they,
• 3:48
Speaker 4: you know, they learn how to live sober without drugs
• 3:50
  Speaker 4: and alcoholic.
• 3:51
Speaker 2: Talk about that aftercare, after they have gone through this, Nick,
• 3:55
  Speaker 2: I mean that's I mean.
• 3:56
Speaker 4: What we call after care. Actually, the thing we're talking
• 3:59
Speaker 4: about today is aftercare. We have an intensive phase one
• 4:02
Speaker 4: program that lasts six months where they come it's an
• 4:05
Speaker 4: intake and we have a curfew. We drug test randomly often,
• 4:09
Speaker 4: we feed them, We have addiction counseling, we have we
• 4:13
Speaker 4: have a lot of they have to get either an
• 4:15
Speaker 4: AA or an NA sponsor. They have to do a
• 4:17
Speaker 4: lot of positive things to help improve their improve their lives,
• 4:21
Speaker 4: and they they after phase one. When you graduate from
• 4:24
Speaker 4: that aftercare is these are going to be studio style apartments.
• 4:28
Speaker 4: They are a little more flexibility that you'll you won't
• 4:31
Speaker 4: have a curfew anymore, so you can work uh in
• 4:33
Speaker 4: the evenings, or you can go to school uh And
• 4:36
Speaker 4: and so aftercare we continue to monitor progress and we
• 4:40
Speaker 4: found our outcomes are better when people stay in our
• 4:42
Speaker 4: facility for at least one year after they after they
• 4:45
  Speaker 4: come in.
• 4:46
Speaker 2: And John Jared is also with John. I know you're
• 4:48
Speaker 2: very involved in this program. Thank you for being here today, sir,
• 4:51
Speaker 2: glad to be Why have you pulled that microphone up
• 4:52
Speaker 2: to you just a little bit?
• 4:54
  Speaker 5: There?
• 4:54
Speaker 2: There you go, there, there you go, there you go.
• 4:56
Speaker 2: So talk about your involvement in all this.
• 4:59
Speaker 6: Well, Dave, I'm involved and had blessed to see and
• 5:04
Speaker 6: meet Dick a year and a half or so ago.
• 5:06
Speaker 2: When we found out you guys only met a year
• 5:09
  Speaker 2: and a half ago, I mean honestly, I thought, I
• 5:12
Speaker 2: mean I thought you guys had been friend forever. I mean,
• 5:14
Speaker 2: really I did. I'm surprised to you there, but go ahead.
• 5:16
Speaker 6: Well, Dick's kind of guy's easy to be friends with,
• 5:19
Speaker 6: and his mission is one that we're able to support wholeheartedly,
• 5:23
Speaker 6: and it hits close to home for me, and if
• 5:26
Speaker 6: you're able to attend the groundbreaking tomorrow, I'll share a
• 5:29
Speaker 6: little bit more of that story. But my dad was
• 5:31
Speaker 6: involved with the Kanawh Valley Fellowship Home. He was a
• 5:35
Speaker 6: resident there back when it was in the house right
• 5:38
Speaker 6: beside First Presby, and he stayed there for a couple
• 5:42
Speaker 6: of years back in the late eighties. And I got
• 5:45
Speaker 6: to meet the executive director when he was staying there,
• 5:48
Speaker 6: Louse Smith, and I got to know a little bit
• 5:51
Speaker 6: about the program then and have been blessed at this
• 5:54
Speaker 6: time in my life to be able to get with
• 5:57
Speaker 6: the Kannah Valley Fellowship Home and help support them. And
• 6:01
Speaker 6: we're looking forward to tomorrow's festivities.
• 6:04
Speaker 2: And Dick, this is you told your story on the
• 6:09
Speaker 2: show before, but again people may be listening for the
• 6:11
  Speaker 2: first time.
• 6:11
Speaker 4: Tell us your story, well, Dave, I suffered from alcoholism.
• 6:18
Speaker 4: I was a drinker, bad to drink, they say, and
• 6:22
Speaker 4: from an early age as a really I started drinking
• 6:25
Speaker 4: when I was in junior high school. And my family
• 6:29
Speaker 4: is afflicted. There's alcoholism in my family and my dad
• 6:32
Speaker 4: was recovering alcoholic. In fact, today is the anniversary of
• 6:36
Speaker 4: his passing February third, nineteen or two thousand and nineteen,
• 6:40
Speaker 4: and he was a person in long term recovery. He
• 6:44
Speaker 4: was sober thirty nine years when he died. And so anyway,
• 6:49
  Speaker 4: I didn't have a bad childhood, but I grew up
• 6:51
Speaker 4: around alcohol and drinking, and it was one of those
• 6:54
Speaker 4: things that a habit turned into an obsession that turned
• 6:57
  Speaker 4: into a disease.
• 6:59
Speaker 2: And the disease, you know, I couldn't quit.
• 7:01
Speaker 4: When I wanted to quit, or when I wanted to
• 7:02
Speaker 4: do the right thing, I couldn't do it because I
• 7:04
Speaker 4: was obsessed and compulsed to drink against my will, really,
• 7:09
Speaker 4: and so it's through the fellowship of the Twelve Step
• 7:12
Speaker 4: movement that helped me get sober. And so part of
• 7:16
Speaker 4: my passion is you know, I've been a businessman in
• 7:19
Speaker 4: the past here in West Virginia and Charleston, and I've
• 7:22
Speaker 4: done a lot of different things. I've been a car dealer,
• 7:24
Speaker 4: and I've been a boat captain, and I've done consulting work,
• 7:28
Speaker 4: and I've done all sorts of stuff. But as a blessing,
• 7:30
Speaker 4: because of my sobriety, all those things have happened because
• 7:33
Speaker 4: I was sober, and I've been a volunteer at this organization,
• 7:37
Speaker 4: the Kenaw Valley Fellowship Home, for over thirty years, and
• 7:40
Speaker 4: the director retired five years ago. I've been there five
• 7:44
Speaker 4: years now, and I applied for the job as a
• 7:47
Speaker 4: segue into retirement, and we saw a need. With the
• 7:50
Speaker 4: opioid crisis that's amongst us right now, we saw a
• 7:53
Speaker 4: need to expand because we have turned down more than
• 7:55
Speaker 4: twelve hundred men, more than twelve hundred applications in the
• 7:59
Speaker 4: five years I've been there, and we need more beds
• 8:01
Speaker 4: and we need we feel we're the best program in
• 8:03
Speaker 4: the state, and we need more beds, and so it's
• 8:06
Speaker 4: my part of my mission. I got introduced to John,
• 8:09
Speaker 4: which was fortuitous because I'd been his friend since childhood.
• 8:15
Speaker 4: I could it because we've become we're big sports fans
• 8:17
Speaker 4: and we share a lot of the same interest So
• 8:21
Speaker 4: and then he told me the story about his dad
• 8:23
Speaker 4: and that that nailed it, and it just you know
• 8:25
Speaker 4: that them as a construction partner, and my friend Tom
• 8:29
Speaker 4: Pott's over at Selling Associates. He's retired, he's emeritis now
• 8:32
Speaker 4: it's selling, but Selling is an architecture firm that's also
• 8:35
Speaker 4: going to be involved in this project. And just we're
• 8:37
  Speaker 4: gonna you know, it's a mission that's turned into it's
• 8:41
Speaker 4: I'm driven by a sense of purpose and passion and
• 8:44
Speaker 4: to get to be with to hear John's I'm tearful
• 8:48
Speaker 4: every time I hear his story about his dad. It
• 8:51
Speaker 4: means so much to me that that I want to
• 8:53
Speaker 4: see men. We want to see a sick man get well,
• 8:56
Speaker 4: and we can do that with the help of John
• 8:58
Speaker 4: and the Canal val Felship.
• 8:59
Speaker 2: From talk about this. So you've got a groundbreaking coming
• 9:03
Speaker 2: up tomorrow, John, talk about.
• 9:04
Speaker 6: Them groundbreaking right right next door to the studios here, Dave.
• 9:08
Speaker 6: Tomorrow morning at ten thirty, Dick will get up and
• 9:12
Speaker 6: tell us a little more about the Fellowship Home and
• 9:15
Speaker 6: its mission. We'll have a blessing from Pastor William Myers
• 9:20
Speaker 6: at First Presby, and Dick's been over there with residents
• 9:25
Speaker 6: from the Fellowship Home. He's already got started. So some
• 9:28
Speaker 6: of the work's already started with the demolition progress. They've
• 9:31
Speaker 6: torn down walls and ceilings and light fixtures and you
• 9:35
  Speaker 6: name it, they've.
• 9:36
Speaker 2: Got rid of it.
• 9:37
Speaker 6: And tomorrow we're going to celebrate the kickoff to the
• 9:42
Speaker 6: design and the construction to make these twelve studio apartments
• 9:48
Speaker 6: turn from dream to reality.
• 9:50
Speaker 2: So what is it like in for those that haven't
• 9:52
Speaker 2: been in there? What is it like now? As because
• 9:55
Speaker 2: you say you're gonna have these studio apartments in there,
• 9:58
Speaker 2: but what does it look like now? And they're trying
• 10:00
  Speaker 2: to describe.
• 10:00
Speaker 4: That, Well, it's a big it's a big, giant open room.
• 10:04
Speaker 4: Now that the building sits on the corner of Brooks
• 10:06
Speaker 4: and Virginia Street, and as you said, right down the
• 10:09
Speaker 4: street from us, right down the street on the corner
• 10:11
Speaker 4: across from Charleston Blueprint, And that's a buff brick two
• 10:14
Speaker 4: story building that Johnstone and gab Hart Law firm occupies
• 10:19
Speaker 4: the first floor, but they're moving out to the end
• 10:21
Speaker 4: of this month. They bought a house over. We bought
• 10:22
Speaker 4: the building. We owned the building now and control the building.
• 10:26
Speaker 4: And so the second floor is what we're modifying.
• 10:29
  Speaker 2: First.
• 10:29
Speaker 4: We're going to put the twelve sober living apartments. Later
• 10:32
Speaker 4: in another next year, we'll we'll work on the downstairs
• 10:37
Speaker 4: part and we'll create a community center that's going to
• 10:40
Speaker 4: be recovery oriented and it'll also house our administrative offices
• 10:45
Speaker 4: and we'll do our addiction counseling and we'll do other
• 10:50
Speaker 4: things for the men in the in the downstairs, but
• 10:53
Speaker 4: upstairs it's it's forty five hundred square feet upstairs, and
• 10:56
Speaker 4: we're going to create these studio style apartments that will
• 10:59
Speaker 4: allow we leave that treating men with dignity and respect.
• 11:03
Speaker 4: We we get that in return. And we believe that
• 11:05
Speaker 4: have an individual a place, a space to call your own,
• 11:09
Speaker 4: even though you don't own it, it's a place that
• 11:11
Speaker 4: you can go. It's a rescite that and it helps
• 11:14
Speaker 4: people when they're in their in their in their I
• 11:16
Speaker 4: guess their journey to get better from you.
• 11:18
Speaker 2: Well, I would think too, because it's quote unquote theirs.
• 11:21
Speaker 2: You know that they get and I mean they can
• 11:23
Speaker 2: take some ownership and they can you know, decorate it
• 11:26
Speaker 2: the way that they want. And you talked about these
• 11:28
Speaker 2: men that are going out of the community and working.
• 11:30
Speaker 2: They can come in and you know, save a little
• 11:32
Speaker 2: money to get that you know, that picture on the
• 11:36
Speaker 2: wall that they want or something like that.
• 11:38
Speaker 4: Yeah, affordable housing is a baseline. John and I were
• 11:41
Speaker 4: discussing that before we came in in the green room,
• 11:43
Speaker 4: that affordable housing or a place to live is a
• 11:47
Speaker 4: baseline for recovery homeless people. Cannot recover. They can't. I
• 11:52
Speaker 4: mean they can if they really are motivated. But when
• 11:55
Speaker 4: when you have a place to live, then you can
• 11:59
Speaker 4: take advantage of the services that are available, the ancillary
• 12:02
Speaker 4: services with our recovery partners like Westvirginia Health Right and
• 12:06
Speaker 4: Jobs and Hope and the different people that help people
• 12:09
Speaker 4: get their their CPS cases worked out, to get their
• 12:12
Speaker 4: driver's licenses back. We have oral health partners helped get
• 12:15
Speaker 4: their teeth fixed, and we have to do all sorts
• 12:17
Speaker 4: of things besides just sober living.
• 12:19
Speaker 2: It's a program that we operate. But Dave Island showing
• 12:22
Speaker 2: five dye line is brown to apart by your hometown
• 12:24
Speaker 2: baseball chief, the Charleston dirty Birds. We're already talking about
• 12:28
Speaker 2: baseball over at Gomart Ballpark. Now'd be a good time
• 12:30
Speaker 2: to get your season tickets, merchandise and more. Visit dirty
• 12:33
Speaker 2: birds baseball dot com. So this ribbon cutting or the groundbreaking,
• 12:37
Speaker 2: I guess or is going to be tomorrow ten thirty,
• 12:40
Speaker 2: all right, But you've also got some other big things
• 12:42
Speaker 2: that's kind of pruising your social media, and you've got
• 12:45
Speaker 2: some fundraisers coming up, right, and we can talk about
• 12:47
Speaker 2: that as we get a little bit closer, but just
• 12:49
Speaker 2: got a big event coming up in March.
• 12:50
Speaker 4: I think I saw that, yes, sir, Yeah, March the
• 12:52
Speaker 4: twenty third at the Clay Center. We're going to have
• 12:55
Speaker 4: chef Paul Smith is going to be the cater with
• 12:59
Speaker 4: ten ten and he's going to also talk at our
• 13:02
Speaker 4: at our fundraiser. He's a person in.
• 13:04
Speaker 2: Recovery and it's been very very public about.
• 13:07
Speaker 4: That he has and and and it's been motivational to
• 13:10
Speaker 4: a lot of our men. And I want to say
• 13:13
Speaker 4: something too about the men that we have that have
• 13:15
Speaker 4: we've we've the money that we get to help our
• 13:18
Speaker 4: men that we paid for the demolition. One of our
• 13:21
Speaker 4: men is the name Aaron Natto, and he has a
• 13:24
Speaker 4: little small remodeling company that he he hires men that
• 13:27
Speaker 4: from our program. And so the money that they pay
• 13:31
Speaker 4: us we return to them. Basically, uh we regenerate money
• 13:36
Speaker 4: or turn it back to the men and to help them,
• 13:39
Speaker 4: uh you know, to get along.
• 13:41
  Speaker 2: It helps us.
• 13:41
Speaker 4: So they Aaron was really good at doing getting the
• 13:44
  Speaker 4: demo work done, and and it's it's a it's it's
• 13:47
Speaker 4: kind of a cool thing that we can that they
• 13:49
Speaker 4: can see the progress and they can see the place
• 13:51
Speaker 4: that they may live.
• 13:52
Speaker 2: One day again. It goes back into the what we
• 13:53
Speaker 2: talked about with the with the apartments. It's a sense
• 13:56
Speaker 2: of pride that they have that I built that. All right,
• 13:59
Speaker 2: give us a detail about tomorrow again, John.
• 14:01
Speaker 6: Ten thirty kick off at ten thirty. We'll get over
• 14:05
Speaker 6: there at eleven twenty three Virginia Street East and have cookies,
• 14:10
Speaker 6: water coffee. Fellowship and Dave, I really appreciate you mentioning
• 14:17
Speaker 6: this upcoming fundraiser for Kanah Valley Fellowship Home. If folks
• 14:22
Speaker 6: in Charleston have an opportunity, they want to see men succeed,
• 14:26
Speaker 6: men with addiction issues succeed, then contributing to this, to
• 14:33
Speaker 6: this wonderful organization will help make that happen.
• 14:36
Speaker 2: And we'll have have you guys on to talk about
• 14:39
Speaker 2: this specific fundraiser that you're doing in March. Where can
• 14:42
Speaker 2: people learn more about your organization and social media websites
• 14:44
  Speaker 2: anything like that.
• 14:45
Speaker 4: We're on Facebook and we there's some videos, some reels
• 14:49
Speaker 4: and stuff on Facebook and KVFH dot org. That's our
• 14:53
Speaker 4: initials Kanaha Valley Fellowships Fellowship Home. So KVFH dot org.
• 14:59
Speaker 4: You can find at and you can find more about us,
• 15:02
Speaker 4: and there's a lot of good information.
• 15:04
Speaker 2: And should people reach out, what's the best way If
• 15:06
Speaker 2: somebody has somebody that needs help and wants more information
• 15:10
Speaker 2: about the program, or a family member, what's the best
• 15:12
Speaker 2: way to go about that.
• 15:13

  Speaker 12: Uh.
• 19:05
Speaker 11: Well, I grew up here on the west side of Charleston,
• 19:08
Speaker 11: went to Jay Robbins, Stonewall Junior High School and Capitol
• 19:12
Speaker 11: High school. Then I went to WVU later on, came
• 19:16
Speaker 11: back after grad school and you know, made a life
• 19:20
Speaker 11: here from my family, met my wife here. We have
• 19:23
Speaker 11: two wonderful children, Lucy and Sid, and I coach sid
• 19:27

• 19:32
Speaker 11: all right, little plug, yeah, a little plug for the
• 19:34
Speaker 11: West Side Foxes. And uh, I'm an elder of my
• 19:37
Speaker 11: church which is right across the street from you guys
• 19:40
Speaker 11: at carl United Presbyterian Church, which I've been on session
• 19:44
Speaker 11: there for a while. And uh uh you know of
• 19:49
Speaker 11: joy sports activities and things like that, like the hunt
• 19:52
Speaker 11: with my family in Greenborough County a lot. And uh,
• 19:55
Speaker 11: you know, over the last couple of years, I've just
• 19:57
Speaker 11: sort of seen the state in the our community sort
• 20:00
Speaker 11: of going in a direction that wasn't preferred, and I'd
• 20:04
Speaker 11: like to do something about that.
• 20:05
Speaker 2: Okay, what do you see them as in going into
• 20:09
Speaker 2: a direction that bothers you or troubles you.
• 20:12
Speaker 11: Well, I think one thing that bothers me is the
• 20:14
Speaker 11: lack of accountability at the state House and the lack
• 20:19
Speaker 11: of public purpose there as well. And I think you know,
• 20:23
Speaker 11: about a decade ago when the current leaders came into office.
• 20:30
Speaker 11: You know, we were promised that if we just you know,
• 20:32
Speaker 11: passed right to work, we got ritter prevailing wage, we
• 20:37
Speaker 11: made big tax cuts, that we would be in the
• 20:40
Speaker 11: land of milk and honey. And ten years later, we
• 20:43
Speaker 11: can look at what's happened. We can see that West
• 20:46
Speaker 11: Virginia has fewer jobs today then we did ten years ago,
• 20:50
Speaker 11: fewer jobs in Kennall County then we did ten years ago.
• 20:53
Speaker 11: We've lost about seventy five thousand people in our population. Meanwhile,
• 20:58
Speaker 11: our electricity rates are up fishfty percent over that time period.
• 21:03
Speaker 11: And now we're seeing cuts and healthcare, especially for state
• 21:06
Speaker 11: workers who are on PIA. So a lot of those
• 21:10
Speaker 11: factors are coming to play and I think for a
• 21:13
Speaker 11: long time we just need to have some balance up
• 21:16
Speaker 11: to the legislature. It's good to have all kinds of opinions.
• 21:18
  Speaker 3: You know.
• 21:19
Speaker 11: One thing I'm really proud of is I try to
• 21:21
Speaker 11: talk and work with everybody, and I think there's a
• 21:24
Speaker 11: lot of value to having a diversity of opinions and
• 21:27
Speaker 11: working on good legislation together in a bob partisan fashion.
• 21:31
Speaker 2: And I'm hoping to bring that up to the legislature.
• 21:33
Speaker 2: And it's the district seventeen. Talk about the district.
• 21:37
Speaker 11: Yeah, the district starts in Saint Albans and it goes
• 21:41
Speaker 11: through South Charleston, South Hills and Kanas City. Then it
• 21:44
Speaker 11: goes right over the bridge there in Kanas City and
• 21:47
Speaker 11: then goes down to Malden Pratt all the way down
• 21:53
Speaker 11: to Cedar Grove. Then it goes all the way back
• 21:56
Speaker 11: up to elk Few Quick Clendennon, systems Ville and comes
• 22:00
  Speaker 11: whipping back around.
• 22:01
  Speaker 2: So it's a very sort of it's that's a very
• 22:04
Speaker 2: diverse district, I mean, and it's what always interests me
• 22:08
Speaker 2: because you know, even though we're all West Virginians and
• 22:10
Speaker 2: we're all kindall valley ends. Uh, the needs wants of
• 22:16
Speaker 2: one of those areas you mentioned may not be the
• 22:17
Speaker 2: same as the other. How do you how do you? Absolutely?
• 22:19
  Speaker 11: I think, well, I think for a long time we're
• 22:22
Speaker 11: not actually listening to people in those districts. And I
• 22:24
Speaker 11: will say right out the front, I think over the
• 22:27
Speaker 11: last obviously the last decade, the Democrats in the state
• 22:30
Speaker 11: have lost the trust of a lot of hard working
• 22:32
Speaker 11: West Virginians and it's not gonna We're not going to
• 22:35
Speaker 11: regain that trust by one election with me. But I
• 22:38
Speaker 11: am going to try my hardest to listen to people
• 22:41
Speaker 11: and to understand where they're coming from, and not to
• 22:44
Speaker 11: belittle anybody, and to work with them on, you know,
• 22:48
Speaker 11: addressing the issues that matter to them. So if it's
• 22:51
Speaker 11: small businesses or families who are struggling to make ends meet,
• 22:56
Speaker 11: or if it's a right to repair bill that people
• 22:58
Speaker 11: are concerned about, I think directly going into that district
• 23:02
Speaker 11: like clen dinner, especially in the world parts, and listening
• 23:04
Speaker 11: to people. I mean, everybody knows the eastern side of
• 23:06
Speaker 11: the county has been completely ignored, and I plan on
• 23:09
Speaker 11: visiting all of those areas and going door to door
• 23:12
Speaker 11: and listening to people and bringing that back because I think,
• 23:15
Speaker 11: you know, for far too long we just haven't been
• 23:18
Speaker 11: able to do that. And whether you're a Democrat, Republican
• 23:21
Speaker 11: or independent, we have a lot more in common than
• 23:24
Speaker 11: what devised us. And I think social media, when you're
• 23:27
Speaker 11: alone at home and you feel like, you know, it
• 23:30
Speaker 11: really can make you angry at people. But it's a
• 23:32
Speaker 11: lot harder to be angry when you're talking one on
• 23:34
Speaker 11: one of Yeah talking amazing how that works. So that's
• 23:37
Speaker 11: why I wish we could go back just listening to radio.
• 23:40
Speaker 2: Amen. Sometimes I wonder if the Internet was a mistake.
• 23:43
Speaker 2: I think it's a passing fad. I'll be honest with you.
• 23:45
Speaker 2: I think though I'd say that in just you said
• 23:49
Speaker 2: that the that in some ways you feel that maybe
• 23:52
Speaker 2: the Democrats had lost some of the trust of the people.
• 23:56
Speaker 11: Why do you say that, I think for I mean
• 23:58
Speaker 11: for several reasons. I mean over the last several decades.
• 24:01
Speaker 11: You know, government is about competency, about bringing the goods
• 24:06
Speaker 11: to the people, so people feel a difference in their
• 24:08
Speaker 11: daily life from what you have done. And during that time,
• 24:12
Speaker 11: we did things like privatize workers comp we did huge
• 24:17
Speaker 11: business tax cuts. When Governor Mansion was an act, it
• 24:20
Speaker 11: was in the legislature when he's a governor, and nonehing
• 24:26
Speaker 11: perspired from that. Nothing happened, and we were promised, oh,
• 24:29
Speaker 11: if we just do this, it'll keep happening. And I
• 24:32
Speaker 11: think those false promises. You know, you lose people's trust
• 24:36
Speaker 11: when you don't run government efficiently, accountable, and have competency
• 24:40
Speaker 11: in government to really carry out the mission, and you
• 24:44
Speaker 11: build it to fail. It really disappoints a lot of
• 24:47
Speaker 11: people and it says to them, well, government's not working
• 24:50
Speaker 11: and corporations aren't doing much for me. The nonprofit sector
• 24:54
Speaker 11: is not doing much for me. So it's going to
• 24:55
Speaker 11: take a long time to build that trust. Because institutional
• 24:59
Speaker 11: trust right now is that its lowest point.
• 25:01
  Speaker 2: That's true. I can remember.
• 25:02
Speaker 11: No one believes anybody, no one. It feels like anybody
• 25:05
Speaker 11: is doing anything. And that's the one thing this campaign
• 25:08
Speaker 11: is about. Is about reaching people, listening to people, not judging,
• 25:13
Speaker 11: and realizing that we just have so much more in
• 25:15
Speaker 11: common if we sit down and talk to one another
• 25:17
Speaker 11: and we might not agree on everything. That's not about that,
• 25:20
Speaker 11: but it's about not being condescending. It's about not getting
• 25:23
Speaker 11: wrapped up in identity politics, about the tribe that you're in,
• 25:27
Speaker 11: and about concentrating on what's best for West Virginia.
• 25:31
Speaker 2: This is District seventeen.
• 25:32
  Speaker 1: Again.
• 25:32
Speaker 2: We're talking to Ted Beatner, who is a Democrat candidate
• 25:35
Speaker 2: for states in a District seventeen. And that seat is
• 25:37
Speaker 2: the seats currently home with Tom Takubo and Charnock right, yeah,
• 25:41
Speaker 2: and Charlotck. Okay, so this is the that's the seat
• 25:43
Speaker 2: you would be running forward heart Yeah, this is the
• 25:44
Speaker 2: unexpired the unexpired to Okay, just want to make just
• 25:47
Speaker 2: want to make clear on that. What's your campaign style
• 25:50
  Speaker 2: going to be?
• 25:50
  Speaker 10: Like?
• 25:50
Speaker 2: What do you plan on doing? You talked about listening
• 25:54
Speaker 2: to people once everybody can walk safely outside. Again, what
• 25:59
Speaker 2: do you what your your door to door kind of guy?
• 26:02
Speaker 2: You're gonna do some meet the candidate's type events? What
• 26:05
Speaker 2: would you like to do all the above?
• 26:07
Speaker 11: I think government works best when it's closest to the people,
• 26:11
Speaker 11: and that means listening and talking to them. There's a lot,
• 26:13
Speaker 11: don't get wrong, there's a lot of frustration out there
• 26:16
Speaker 11: and a lot of people have just tuned things out,
• 26:19
Speaker 11: you know. And I think going door to door, meeting
• 26:22
Speaker 11: with the elected officials all over this district, meeting with
• 26:26
Speaker 11: the city council folks that are here, meeting with community leaders,
• 26:30
Speaker 11: meeting especially with small businesses that are up Campbell's Creek,
• 26:34
Speaker 11: that are in Sissonsville, that are in Kanos City and
• 26:38
Speaker 11: other areas. It's vastly important because I watched that it
• 26:42
Speaker 11: took almost like two and a half years to fix
• 26:44
  Speaker 11: mccorklill Avenue.
• 26:46
Speaker 2: You know, we built the new River Gorge Bridge in
• 26:48
Speaker 2: less than three years.
• 26:50
Speaker 11: I think today that might take twenty years because of
• 26:53
Speaker 11: how inefficient things are working. So I think bringing that back,
• 26:57
Speaker 11: realizing that there is somebody there fighting for listening to you.
• 27:01
Speaker 11: But it's going to take a long process to do that,
• 27:05
Speaker 11: and it's not going to happen in just this year
• 27:07
Speaker 11: with me running or anything like that. But I hope
• 27:09
Speaker 11: we can begin that process to listen to the people
• 27:14
Speaker 11: and to build that trust back.
• 27:17
Speaker 2: If you are elected, Ted, you know the numbers, they
• 27:21
Speaker 2: are not a whole lot of Democrats in the State
• 27:22
Speaker 2: House right now. You're running for the Senate, you know,
• 27:24
Speaker 2: not a lot there, certainly not a lot in the House.
• 27:27
Speaker 2: If you are elected, you're not going to see a
• 27:31
Speaker 2: lot of fellow D's there. I mean, maybe you will
• 27:34
Speaker 2: because there's a lot on the ballot, okay, but as
• 27:35
Speaker 2: of right now, if you were elected today, there's not
• 27:37
Speaker 2: a lot. How do you plan on having those conversations
• 27:40
Speaker 2: when you are definitely when the Republicans have a super
• 27:43
Speaker 2: duper majority, how do you plan on having those conversations?
• 27:48
Speaker 11: Well, I mean, I think I will tell you too. Like,
• 27:51
Speaker 11: up until a couple months, you know, a couple of
• 27:53
Speaker 11: months ago, I was a registered independent and I actually
• 27:57
Speaker 11: you know, came into the Democratic Party again because I
• 28:00
Speaker 11: think that I felt a duty to help capture what
• 28:05
Speaker 11: originally the party was about, which was standing up for
• 28:09
Speaker 11: working people. I think it's drifted far too much into
• 28:13
Speaker 11: academia and the professional class and not really gone back
• 28:18
Speaker 11: to its roots in working class West Virginians. So my
• 28:22
Speaker 11: hope is to work with legislators and all kinds of policies.
• 28:25
Speaker 11: And I've had a long track record of being at
• 28:28
Speaker 11: the Capitol when I was at the West Virginia cent
• 28:30
Speaker 11: around buzzing policy, we worked with Republicans and Democrats all
• 28:34
Speaker 11: the time and all.
• 28:34
  Speaker 2: Types of bills.
• 28:35
Speaker 11: We passed a little bill to expand unemployment insurance for
• 28:39
Speaker 11: when people lost their jobs that they could get half
• 28:42
Speaker 11: they could be put on part time unemployment and be
• 28:46
Speaker 11: part time at their job until things got better at
• 28:49
Speaker 11: the small business and they could hire them back.
• 28:51
  Speaker 2: I mean, there's a mirroad of policies.
• 28:54
Speaker 11: We all think that we should get cell phones out
• 28:55
Speaker 11: of schools, that we shouldn't be teaching just using eads.
• 29:01
Speaker 11: We all believe that we need to work on literacy
• 29:04
Speaker 11: in math in England, in writing at school, Like if
• 29:08
Speaker 11: you can't graduate high school with being proficient in those things,
• 29:12
Speaker 11: there's a serious problem. And that's not happening right now.
• 29:15
Speaker 11: We've seen really good education reform in Mississippi Alabama, and
• 29:20
Speaker 11: I know a lot of the Republican legisters are very
• 29:22
Speaker 11: interested in looking at those things. There's just a whole
• 29:25
Speaker 11: array of issues that are you know, I try not
• 29:28
Speaker 11: to look at any issue as partisan per se, and
• 29:31
Speaker 11: I don't really want to engage in that partisan activity.
• 29:34
Speaker 11: At What I want to do is try to get
• 29:36
Speaker 11: things done and I'll work with everybody. I think I
• 29:40
Speaker 11: have a long track record of doing that as well.
• 29:42
Speaker 2: When you look at the current makeup of the legislature,
• 29:47
Speaker 2: despite the fact and this is the house, I know
• 29:48
Speaker 2: y're running percentate. But you know, we heard there was
• 29:51
Speaker 2: a press conference they said, you know, we're going to
• 29:53
Speaker 2: kind of shy away from some of the social issues
• 29:55
Speaker 2: and we want to focus on this. Well, you know,
• 29:57
Speaker 2: we're already seeing these things brought up Charlie kirk Day
• 30:01
Speaker 2: and and uh and a lot of different things. Bibles
• 30:06
Speaker 2: and I'm not saying essentially a bad thing. I'm just
• 30:08
Speaker 2: saying that's kind of not what the original message was
• 30:11
Speaker 2: the Bible in the school and so on and so forth.
• 30:17
Speaker 2: Where are you on on on social issues?
• 30:20
Speaker 11: Well, I think, first of all, Rose, I don't believe
• 30:22
Speaker 11: in I believe in the Constitution, freedom of speech and equality,
• 30:27
Speaker 11: and that we all have those fundamental rights. Uh So,
• 30:31
Speaker 11: you know, it depends on whose parties in power whether
• 30:34
Speaker 11: we believe in free speech sometimes, and that's gone back
• 30:36
Speaker 11: and forth a lot the last couple of years. Uh So,
• 30:39
Speaker 11: when it comes to some of those issues, I fully
• 30:42
Speaker 11: understand where people are coming from. When people have hesitancy
• 30:46
Speaker 11: about uh, you know, gender affirming surgery, I totally understand
• 30:50
Speaker 11: where people are coming from on those issues. When people
• 30:53
Speaker 11: are questioning whether you know, uh, you know, men should
• 30:57
Speaker 11: be in sports, I understand where they're coming from on
• 31:00
Speaker 11: a lot of those issues. And I think not throwing
• 31:03
Speaker 11: names at people who are just trying to figure those
• 31:06
Speaker 11: things out, because a lot of this stuff is very
• 31:08
Speaker 11: contested territory and people are coming from good places on
• 31:12
Speaker 11: a lot of it, and I think it's up to
• 31:14
Speaker 11: us to help have that dialogue and that discussion so
• 31:18
Speaker 11: we can focus what's really important here in West Virginia.
• 31:21
Speaker 11: Because when I talk to most people, what they care
• 31:23
Speaker 11: about more is what's happening at the supermarket than they
• 31:26
Speaker 11: care about what's happening with the stock market, or.
• 31:29
Speaker 2: Any of these social issues. Talking to Ted Bettner. Now
• 31:31
Speaker 2: that last name may sound familiar to people. Your family's
• 31:35
Speaker 2: got a service of a history of service in public service,
• 31:38
  Speaker 2: right Yeah.
• 31:39
Speaker 11: My father was in the in the state legislature I
• 31:42
Speaker 11: think about sixteen years.
• 31:43
Speaker 2: But yet you still want to do this. I know,
• 31:45
Speaker 2: I think I need to get my head examined. That's
• 31:47
Speaker 2: what I was saying earlier.
• 31:48
Speaker 11: But you know, one of my favorite memories was going
• 31:50
Speaker 11: up to the Capitol all the time as a kid
• 31:52
Speaker 11: and just being inspired by what a lot of policymakers
• 31:56
Speaker 11: were doing. I mean, one of my favorite memories was
• 31:58
Speaker 11: being on my dad's shoulder when Jesse Jackson came here,
• 32:03
Speaker 11: and I just remember getting up on our shore like
• 32:05
  Speaker 11: preach brother.
• 32:06
  Speaker 3: You know.
• 32:07
Speaker 11: It's just one of those little memories I had. I
• 32:09
Speaker 11: met Arnold Schwarzenegger when he came here, and Muhammad Ali
• 32:12
Speaker 11: came to the Capitol. Those are some of my heroes
• 32:15
Speaker 11: from childhood. So I have really fond memories of that,
• 32:19
Speaker 11: and I just I feel urging to, you know, get
• 32:21
Speaker 11: in public service and deliver for the people.
• 32:25
Speaker 2: Do you have a website or social media or anything.
• 32:28
Speaker 2: We're working on that right now. Okay, all right, I
• 32:30
Speaker 2: do this with every candidate we have ted what we
• 32:32
Speaker 2: call it the Final thirty, and it's not actually timed
• 32:35
Speaker 2: or anything like that. But why should someone vote for
• 32:37
Speaker 2: Ted Bettner, Democratic State Senate District seventeen.
• 32:40
Speaker 11: I think if you're interested in having someone in office
• 32:43
Speaker 11: that believes in accountability, public service and bringing together people
• 32:49
Speaker 11: to do what's right for West Virginia, to be bipartisan
• 32:53
Speaker 11: and nonpartisan at the same time, and who feels like
• 32:57
Speaker 11: the state is maybe moving into the wrong direction on
• 33:00
Speaker 11: a host of issues, and that the legislature would benefit
• 33:04
Speaker 11: by having somebody an office who cares deeply about working
• 33:08
Speaker 11: families in this state and puts their interest first above
• 33:12
Speaker 11: large out of state corporations who tend to dominate the
• 33:15
Speaker 11: process up at the capitol. I think you would try to,
• 33:19
Speaker 11: you know, look at me as a good candidate for
• 33:22
  Speaker 11: that position.
• 33:23
Speaker 2: Ted Bettner. He is a Democrat running out of a

• 37:55
Speaker 2: Texas not knocking this man, Dave. But all you hear
• 37:58
Speaker 2: it's the same thing from every politician. I believe you
• 38:01
Speaker 2: have to be out talking, meeting people and paying attention
• 38:04
Speaker 2: to their needs. Then after their election is over, you
• 38:07
Speaker 2: never hear from any of them. Again. Our current reps
• 38:10
Speaker 2: in DC never even have a town hall, says a
• 38:14
Speaker 2: tanks term. You know, I understand that sentiment, and you're right. However,
• 38:21
Speaker 2: I will say this to kind of play devil's advocate here.
• 38:24
Speaker 2: One of the reasons why some of our delegations, and
• 38:28
Speaker 2: it's not just a West Virginia thing, they don't want
• 38:32
Speaker 2: to have town halls, is because they see what's going
• 38:35
Speaker 2: on at other town halls across the country. Safety issues,
• 38:39
Speaker 2: whether it's Republican or Democrat. I mean if people at
• 38:42
Speaker 2: a town and I like to think that West Virginians
• 38:44
Speaker 2: are a little bit more respectable than that. We don't
• 38:46
Speaker 2: have a lot of the problems here. Actually we have
• 38:49
Speaker 2: none that we have in other areas. I would like
• 38:52
Speaker 2: to think that if a Senator, Capitol, Congressman More, Congressman Miller,
• 38:56
Speaker 2: Senator Justice had a town hall, that West Virginians that
• 38:59
Speaker 2: even disagree with them would show up to have their
• 39:04
Speaker 2: concerns heard. I would like to think about that, or
• 39:07
Speaker 2: i'd I'd like to think that way and think that
• 39:09
Speaker 2: everything would go smoothly. But last week in Minnesota, we
• 39:13
Speaker 2: just had a representative who was attacked. And I don't
• 39:15
Speaker 2: care how you feel about Representative Omar. She doesn't deserve
• 39:18
Speaker 2: to be attacked, nor does a Republican. If it were
• 39:21
Speaker 2: Republicans standing there, I'd say the same thing. So I
• 39:25
Speaker 2: understand from a safety standpoint why they don't want to
• 39:29
Speaker 2: have them, but I also say that's not the way
• 39:32
Speaker 2: we do things primarily here in West Virginia. I would
• 39:36
Speaker 2: say that, so again, you know, kind of as I
• 39:39
Speaker 2: tend to do, kind of riding the fence in check
• 39:42
Speaker 2: says The Day the Music Died February third, nineteen fifty nine,

Speaker 2: his home in California. He was eighty three years old.
• 40:15
Speaker 2: Nineteen seventy one. I was talking to a radio friend
• 40:17
Speaker 2: of mine earlier today nineteen who's on the radio in
• 40:20
Speaker 2: the early nineteen seventies, nineteen seventy one, you could not
• 40:23
Speaker 2: go anywhere. I don't remember nineteen seventy one, by the
• 40:25
  Speaker 2: way I was born, but I don't remember. It couldn't
• 40:28
Speaker 2: go anywhere that you didn't hear the song Joy to
• 40:30
Speaker 2: the World, which, by the way, I want that play.
• 40:32
Speaker 2: My wife knows that song will be played at my funeral.
• 40:34
Speaker 2: I'm not planning it, all right, just say you no,

• 41:32
Speaker 2: o six, and just to be fair, just so you know,
• 41:34
Speaker 2: tomorrow is WVU Day at the Capitol Texas. When it
• 41:40
Speaker 2: comes to gender affirming care, you know where people are
• 41:42
Speaker 2: coming from. Would that be common sense? Sends the texture
• 41:50
Speaker 2: Texas strange. There are a lot of similarities between Charlie
• 41:54
Speaker 2: Kirk and Martin Luther King Junior. Both faith based men,
• 41:57
Speaker 2: both were for nonviolent protesting. Both preach tolerance an acceptance.
• 42:01
Speaker 2: But for some reason, Democrats seem to have a problem
• 42:03
Speaker 2: with having a Charlie Kirk Day here. MLK Day is federal,
• 42:07
Speaker 2: but that's not says a texture. You know, I've read
• 42:11
Speaker 2: a lot about this Charlie Kirk Day. I'll be honest
• 42:14
Speaker 2: with you, because I am in the world of media.
• 42:16
Speaker 2: I had heard of Charlie Kirk. I couldn't tell you
• 42:18
Speaker 2: a single thing about him until tragically. I don't want
• 42:21
Speaker 2: anybody to ever lose their life for anything, Okay, In
• 42:24
Speaker 2: that respect, I was aware of Charlie Kirk. I was not.
• 42:28
  Speaker 2: I won't say I was a fan or I wasn't
• 42:29
Speaker 2: a fan. I didn't know anything about him until after
• 42:32
Speaker 2: he was tragically tragically killed. But I will say this
• 42:40
Speaker 2: and if this makes me sound super liberal that I apologize.
• 42:45
Speaker 2: I'm not. I'm more independent. Not a good look for
• 42:51
Speaker 2: West Virginia to have a Charlie Kirk day months after
• 42:54
Speaker 2: doing away with June tenth. Just I'm a pr guy.

• 48:58
Speaker 2: you right there. More likely Bad Money won't be singing

• 49:49
Speaker 2: Would you say, I said, who is bad Bunny? What
• 49:51
Speaker 2: are you talking about? Well, that's what the majority of
• 49:54
Speaker 2: America will be saying who is bad Bunny? And then
• 49:56
Speaker 2: other people will say, well, he's like the biggest star
• 49:58
Speaker 2: on the planet right now. And because because people of
• 50:01
Speaker 2: our age don't know who he is doesn't mean he's
• 50:04
Speaker 2: not a big deal. I had never heard of him either,
• 50:06
Speaker 2: but he just you know, he's a multi Grammy Award
