Transcript
- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me covering one piece the
- 0:10live action Netflix series, Season one, episode four. The Pirates are Coming.
- 0:19In this episode, man, I have started to realize that one of
- 0:25the hardest plot lines to watch is the a thing is happening and nobody believes
- 0:32it. Trope, I really felt for usap Man. Welcome to spoil Me.
- 0:59Welcome to the show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank you very much
- 1:03to Gabby for commissioning this episode, and also thanks to Gabby. I will
- 1:07make this announcement now. You guys know that normally my recording times start at
- 1:14four pm Central Standard Time, and on Halloween. I had not booked that
- 1:19day off because I wasn't really thinking things through completely, and I have asked
- 1:26Gabby if I could move up both one piece episodes on that day because there's
- 1:32one for the Netflix and one for the anime, and Gabby generously was very
- 1:38flexible. So I will be starting my recordings on Halloween afternoon at one o'clock
- 1:46instead of my usual four o'clock. That way, I will be done recording
- 1:51at five thirty and I will have the evening because I really want to start
- 1:55doing stuff on Halloween. So yeah, I appreciates you, Gabby, and
- 2:00just wanted to let everybody know ahead of time. I know that for a
- 2:02lot of you who are abroad, earlier time slots are actually easier for you,
- 2:08so hopefully you we'll enjoy that on that day. But anyway, let's
- 2:13get into this episode. So we start off going down into what I keep
- 2:20sort of calling a well there isn't any water in it, so it's unclear
- 2:27for me what this actually is. But the main thing that I was like
- 2:36sort of surprised by is the fact that Mary the sheep Man seems to indeed
- 2:43actually be dead. I wasn't really sure if they were going to do that
- 2:47or not. And personally, you guys know that I always sort of have
- 2:52had an issue with how easy it is for people to recover from what seemed
- 2:58to be life threatening wounds, or indeed people who it looked like had died
- 3:02not being dead after all. So I have no problem with this. But
- 3:07when Zoro wakes up and looks over, I was like kind of expecting for
- 3:13Mary to like cough and then be like I'm still here, you know,
- 3:17and instead he is I guess left at the bottom of that well. When
- 3:23Zoro climbs out, I assume they go back and get him later, But
- 3:28this sequence of Zoro trying to get out of the well, I don't remember
- 3:32if this is how it goes in the anime, but I really enjoyed this
- 3:36like as a metaphor for him just becoming so determined to accomplish something specific that
- 3:43he never gives up even though that shit is very, very hard. And
- 3:49this kind of tenacity is the sort of thing that I admire so much because
- 3:58I have it with something things, very specific things, but I don't have
- 4:02it in a lot of others. And I really wish that I could find
- 4:08it in me to just keep pushing sometimes because I really believe in the like.
- 4:15There are times, of course where it's no, you should give up,
- 4:17this is not going to happen. You're wasting your time when you could
- 4:21be applying it to something that's more worthwhile. But then there are things that
- 4:25are just like, you know, better for the whole way you live your
- 4:28life. If you go ahead and keep trying, even if you never really
- 4:31get where you would ideally like to end up, the action of trying makes
- 4:36your life better. And that's the thing that I would really like to be
- 4:41able to like exemplify a bit more. But yeah, so he we have
- 4:46like the whole backstory of Zorro's decision to become the best swordsman in this episode,
- 4:56and it's pretty much identical to the storyline in the anime. But I'm
- 5:04gonna be honest, y'all, I really prefer the anime version. And you
- 5:11guys know that was probably out of like all of the episodes of this show.
- 5:17It was one of the most emotionally affecting, and it was certainly for
- 5:25me the first episode that I watch that was really surprising to me how tonally
- 5:32different it was than what I had watched so far, because it falls very
- 5:38early on in the anime, and everything had been so unabashedly completely bonkers that
- 5:45I got very used to that tone, and so when we came to this
- 5:48episode, I was taken entirely by surprise at how serious it was. And
- 5:58I feel like there is some thing about the way it's animated and the like
- 6:05just contrast of it with the rest of the show that feels extremely intense at
- 6:15the time, and it just kind of lacked that for me in this So
- 6:23I don't know, you know, it's it's sort of like a difficult thing
- 6:27to say because they are such different mediums. I think part of me didn't
- 6:30love the acting of the younger Zoro, and I also like the abruptness with
- 6:39which they have him finding out that she's dead, and the just the sense
- 6:46of it being this like friendship that they developed. I just didn't quite feel
- 6:53it. And it's not like they spent less time on any of it than
- 6:58they did in the anime, as far as I can work, But yeah,
- 7:02for whatever reason, I just really was affected by the anime in a
- 7:06way that the show didn't. And maybe it's just because I knew it was
- 7:10coming, But the anime, there are some really like long pauses and beautiful
- 7:15moments of the camera pulling back while he's there. I remember one particular shot
- 7:19where young Zoro is standing in a field and he is opposite Kuena, and
- 7:27the wind is blowing and it's like nighttime, so as the wind is blowing
- 7:30over the grass, there's this ripple effect and the moonlight shining off the top
- 7:34of it, and it's like just this incredibly beautiful shot in a show whose
- 7:41animation can be very very iffy sometimes and when I think of that episode,
- 7:47That moment in the Moonlight is the is the moment that I think of.
- 7:53So the I'm not going to spend a whole lot of time on that storyline
- 7:59because because I you know, pretty much it's identical to the anime, and
- 8:05because it didn't work for me as well, I'm going to mostly focus on
- 8:09the things that I really really liked. So we start off with Zoro,
- 8:15but then we cut over to us Up talking to Kobe and he is explaining
- 8:22the situation with this pirate that he is claiming is pretending to be a butler.
- 8:26Of course, we have Helmepo here, who is like, I can't
- 8:30believe that you are buying any of this to Kobe, and Kobe is obviously
- 8:39sensing. He has like a gut feeling that one Usup is not lying,
- 8:48and two when he meets Clahador, he is like, yeah, this guy's
- 8:54no good, Like, clearly something is up, but there's no actual evidence,
- 8:58and in fact, the evidence is against USA based on his past behavior.
- 9:05So it's what you get here is this incredibly difficult storyline of Kobe's gut
- 9:16telling him to believe Usup. Usup telling the truth for like the first time,
- 9:20in his life, and neither of those things mattering, because Helmepo is
- 9:30insistent that his father already killed Kuro, and there's a certain sense of pride
- 9:35there that's getting in the way for sure, like he's never going to believe
- 9:39that his father was wrong about killing somebody. And also Hewmepo doesn't want Kobe
- 9:45to succeed, so he's very like, yeah, uh, we're not only
- 9:50not going to find pirates, but there's no way straw Hat is anywhere around
- 9:54here, which results in an interesting sort of conflict with Helmepo when later,
- 10:01even though they don't believe that Claudeador is a pirate, when it turns out
- 10:05that Lufy is here, he seems to be kind of disappointed, like,
- 10:11I think he just wanted this to be an outright failure, and the fact
- 10:15that it seems like maybe we're getting what we came for he should be happy
- 10:20about. But it's not about what he should feel. It's about just wanting
- 10:26this poor kid to fail. So I said this in the intro about how
- 10:31tough it is to watch somebody not be believed, and I have realized as
- 10:37far back as I can remember, this has been something that has really been
- 10:43difficult for me to watch in storylines is when a person has gone through an
- 10:50experience and nobody is willing to hear them out even or willing to take a
- 10:58leap, and it's you know, because of my reaction to it, you
- 11:05would think maybe I had personal experience with saying something had happened and not being
- 11:09believed. I don't, really like, there's nothing that I'm very lucky in
- 11:15a lot of ways. I never suffered any kind of abuse that I needed
- 11:18to report. That's the sort of thing that's extremely common as people who have
- 11:22been abused not being believed by authority figures, by their parents, or even
- 11:30if they were believed, somebody just being like, well, but you probably
- 11:33brought it on yourself somehow. And of course, never forget the whole issue
- 11:39with that, with domestic abuse and how many women have suffered at the hands
- 11:46of partners who are otherwise extremely charming and know exactly how to handle the outside
- 11:52world so that they continue getting away with what they do behind closed doors.
- 11:56And people really think that because they knew this person on a social level,
- 12:01that they know them enough to say he would never do X, y Z,
- 12:05He's not like that. When the whole thing about abusers is that they
- 12:11are different people when they are with the person they are abusing. So I
- 12:16think that's like part of where my issue came from. Even as a young
- 12:22kid, I was pretty aware of the concept of being abused and not believed
- 12:26because I had heard from a young age my parents both suffered abuse as children,
- 12:33and they both were very vigilant with me in terms of explaining to me
- 12:41what that could look like and to tell them right away. Both of them
- 12:46were really insistent on me understanding the concept of the various kinds of abuse that
- 12:52could happen, so that I would know enough to be able to tell them
- 12:56if it were happening to me, which I really appreciate. I was prepared
- 13:01if it happened, but it never did, thank God. And because I
- 13:05was warned, I had an extra sort of sensitivity to anything that surrounded that
- 13:13sort of concept, even in a vague way, like just not being believed
- 13:18about something that isn't related to abuse at all. This is part of also
- 13:24why I never ever could get into the Labyrinth. The labyrinth came out or
- 13:31not the Labyrinth labyrinth and it's this very young girl and this older man being
- 13:37super creepy with her, and even as a young young child, I was
- 13:43like, Okay, this guy is abusive, like this is a molester.
- 13:46And then it became this classic that people love, and to this day I'm
- 13:50just like, I guess I have never been able to see it for that
- 13:54movie. So anyway, all this to say, I rewatch the beginning of
- 14:01this episode, like the first fifteen minutes and the last ten minutes, but
- 14:07I skipped on my rewatch the whole middle because seeing poor usap be Gaslet is
- 14:15so difficult. I hated this. It's not only the fact that hel Mepo
- 14:20is constantly calling into question, not only the fact that Klahador is so good
- 14:26at like destroying his credibility, but later when he finally goes and talks to
- 14:37oh my god, what is her name, Kara Kayla? I can't remember
- 14:41her name, but you know, the young girl. When he talks to
- 14:45her, she doesn't believe him either. That part was the worst for me.
- 14:50It was the fact that she says something like I believed your other stories
- 14:56because they made me feel better, but this is not a okay. Like
- 15:03what I always want a person in these sort of situations to ask, is
- 15:11what would I gain from lying to you about this? And it's a difficult
- 15:18thing because usup will lie without there being anything necessarily to gain. He liess
- 15:26Kaya, thank you, Florien kia Is. You know, she's uplifted by
- 15:31his stories when he gets really extreme and ridiculous with how he's telling them.
- 15:37So he gets something out of that. He impresses her in a way that
- 15:39lifts her spirits and makes her feel better, and that's what he wants to
- 15:43do with the pirates are coming. I don't really know what he gets out
- 15:48of that. I think it's just sort of living out a fantasy of his
- 15:50father coming home. But even that, it's just a sort of strange bit
- 15:54that he does. So I don't even think that the question what would I
- 15:58get out of this? Would work that well in this situation, But that
- 16:03is often when I'm watching this sort of thing, what's on my mind is
- 16:06just like, you think he's lying, but for what reason? What do
- 16:10you think he's lying for? And sometimes like within the plot, there is
- 16:15something built in that seems like it would be a motivation, you know,
- 16:19And so it can work even though it's difficult to watch, you sort of
- 16:23understand why characters don't believe here. I really want to know how MEPO keeps
- 16:32saying, you're not buying this right to Kobe about what Usup is telling them,
- 16:37And I just wanted to be like, hell, MEPO, what do
- 16:41you think Usup's getting out of telling the Marines that there's this person who is
- 16:47a piate? Like, why do you think he would lie? It's not
- 16:49like how MEPO knows Usop's reputation as a liar, and not only that,
- 16:55they come into the town and find Usup already yelling for help from people.
- 17:00So it's not like he saw the Marines and was like, oh, perfect
- 17:03opportunity, rubbing his hands together to like report a thing that he just fabricated.
- 17:07They come upon him already desperate and sitting and asking why doesn't anybody believe
- 17:12me? So I just kept wanting to be like, will you just like
- 17:18inquire from Helmepo why he thinks you are lying? Ooh, I'm sorry,
- 17:26I just saw that Florian earlier, he said. The blue haired character in
- 17:29this episode reminded me of somebody else. For weeks, I was thinking of
- 17:32the orange haired servant girl from the Rocky Horror Picture Show and now I can
- 17:36rest. I'm gonna tell you guys something I have never seen. Rocky Horror
- 17:42Picture Show. I know. I know Rashaan is obsessed with it. She
- 17:49loves it. She does those like you know, theater going experiences where people
- 17:53dress up and they like sing along to it and everything. She loves it.
- 17:59I have seen in like the first ten minutes, and that is all.
- 18:03The soundtrack was played frequently at like cast parties when I was in school,
- 18:08so I know the music, but other than that, never seen it.
- 18:12So forgive me, but I do not know the reference. Sarahim says
- 18:17it started as a coping mechanism for his dad running away and his mom being
- 18:21sick, fantasizing about dad coming home and somehow making his mom better, and
- 18:25he just never stopped. Okay, So but like that's the part that I
- 18:30find kind of puzzling, is just never having stopped, because it was a
- 18:34very specific thing he was hoping to do and now any possibility of that is
- 18:38gone. Not to say that we ever just stop our coping mechanisms. There
- 18:44are times where they stay with us our whole lives, but usually we can
- 18:47sort of delude ourselves into continuing to believe in something from them. And I
- 18:53don't know what he's telling himself about lying to everybody regarding pirates. What is
- 19:00what is the story that he's telling himself there about that, I don't know,
- 19:03but it doesn't it ultimately, it doesn't really matter. It's just like
- 19:07I'm just trying to explain to you guys my feelings of like difficulty surrounding this
- 19:14sort of thing. And it was I don't want to start a whole thing
- 19:18here because I have no doubt that there are gonna be people listening to this
- 19:21who want to come at me about it, and I am not interested.
- 19:23So just save your breath. But the whole thing that happened with the trial
- 19:30between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard is such a great example. Johnny Depp is
- 19:36an abuser and Amber Heard has done some like really gross things, but she,
- 19:44I believe, is fully reacting to having been in an abusive relationship.
- 19:49And there have been so many little like bits from the trial that have gained
- 19:55this sort of life of their own because they are like salacious, you know,
- 20:02like for example, this thing about her having shit on the bed.
- 20:04People will still talk about that as if it was real, When if you
- 20:08read the documents, he admits that she hadn't actually been the one to shit
- 20:14on the bed, like he comes out and says that that wasn't what happened,
- 20:18But nobody pays attention to that part. That's not the part that gets
- 20:22memed. And there are so many instances of that within that trial, of
- 20:30things that she was accused of that stuck for whatever reason as he testified them
- 20:37and were disproved or shown to be wildly exaggerated, but that part after the
- 20:45fact never tempered what public opinion was or what people's understanding was. So the
- 20:52way that she is seen now is as somebody who invented whole claw things that
- 20:59happened her and was herself an abuser and just trying to cast aspersions on him,
- 21:04when in fact, if you actually look at the history of what happened
- 21:11between them, plus the documentation, it is unequivocally that he is an abusive
- 21:18piece of shit, And you cannot convince me otherwise. Don't care. I
- 21:22have read what I have read, and a lot of it is direct fucking
- 21:26screenshots of him, and I can't. You will never convince me otherwise.
- 21:33The whole point of that trial was for him to undermine her credibility, and
- 21:37it worked, because that is what men are great at, is making women
- 21:42look like the bad guy so they can keep doing their shit. This is
- 21:45like a classic tactic, and the fact that everybody fell for it is enraging.
- 21:53And the fact that it has established now a precedent that a woman can
- 22:00accuse a man of abuse and he can counter sue for her making this accusation
- 22:07is so hideous and upsetting, Like the implications of that we have created a
- 22:12scenario where there's even more reason for women to stay quiet about abuse. It's
- 22:19fucking grotesque to me. And yet you, like eighty percent of the world
- 22:26is convinced that she's the monster and that he has been unfairly maligned. Poor
- 22:32Johnny. I really can't believe that people are still trying to cancel him when
- 22:37we all know stop it. So that's the big one that hovers in my
- 22:42mind these days, because it's just so everything about people believing him is so
- 22:49surface and so predictable and so like entrenched in misogyny that it makes me sick
- 22:56to my stomach. And yet, like, there are so many folks out
- 23:02there that otherwise have very progressive viewpoints on a lot of things and are really
- 23:07leftist, and they still fell for this shit. So anyway, all this
- 23:11to say people not being believed. It's like a little triggering, and so
- 23:18this whole thing is just really really tough, you guys. We have the
- 23:22discovery of Loofy as well. In the kitchen, he has like all the
- 23:26soup around his mouth because it was that blue, like chunky soup. I
- 23:30don't know what this is. It almost looks like it was like oatmeal or
- 23:34grits or something that had food coloring in it. But it looks so gross,
- 23:38and it's supposed to be that it's around his mouth because he basically like
- 23:42tilted the whole pot of soup up and it got on his face because he
- 23:48was eating sloppily. But what it looks like to me is that he threw
- 23:51up and it's like on his face. So anyway, his body is discovered
- 23:56first by Nami, who was like, oh my god, what the hell
- 24:00happen? And she's trying to wake him up when she hears people coming and
- 24:04realizes, Okay, something shady is happening because if he ate that soup and
- 24:10now he's out. These people were up to no good, so she immediately
- 24:15hides when she hears them coming, and they find the body and assume,
- 24:23if he's not dead already, that he will be shortly. Of course,
- 24:27Kuro is infuriated, like the fact that this is I don't know if he
- 24:34had still been planning on giving Kaya the soup or if this was something that
- 24:38he had sort of abandoned the concept of getting at her this particular way,
- 24:44but it's just the sloppiness of yet another person to deal with, and he
- 24:48instructs them to dump his body with the green haired goon or whatever it is
- 24:56I don't remember. He calls him like an imbecill or something, and the
- 25:02uh uh. When Nami is like overhearing all of this from the cupboard and
- 25:06she hears him say like, dump him with the other one, of course
- 25:11it sounds like, oh, we killed them both, and she is really
- 25:17like freaking out a little bit. Which it makes so much sense, you
- 25:21guys, because this this is a woman who is already so traumatized by pirates,
- 25:29which we don't know yet as viewers in this, but you know we
- 25:33do, so it must be awful for her to be in this situation that
- 25:38seems mostly positive after her conversation with Kayenne, sort of getting things out about,
- 25:47you know, her feelings regarding this rich girl. She's in this nice
- 25:51house, she's being given a place to sleep and something to eat, and
- 25:55things are looking pretty up. And then to find out that she has been
- 25:59like thrust in the middle of this whole thing. It's like I have to
- 26:03imagine just triggering for her, you know. So I do love to I
- 26:08want to mention I can't remember the name of the chef, Bachi I think,
- 26:15but he is so actually invested in, like being a good chef,
- 26:22that he is sort of sad that Lufy's dead because he's like, I really
- 26:27would have liked to talk to him about how it tasted, because I was
- 26:33pursuing that perfect balance between savory and bitter. And the girl with the blue
- 26:41hair says like, it probably tasted like poison, and he's like, not
- 26:45when I'm the chef, which I do really like, Like, yeah,
- 26:48the point of it is that it doesn't taste like poison or else why would
- 26:52Kaya be eating it. But there's something about how like actually wanting to be
- 27:00good at his job he is that I do appreciate as somebody who also likes
- 27:03to cook. It's just a point of pride, you know. And she
- 27:07tries to say like, you're not a chef and I'm not a maid.
- 27:11We're pirates. But then later she says something about how he better not track
- 27:15Muddon on her floors again, and he's like, oh, really, because
- 27:18you're the maid and she's like, how dare you? And I'm like,
- 27:22I don't know, girl, that did sound like somebody who is a maid.
- 27:26So this is when we have Kobe at the door and he is with
- 27:30you know, Helmepo and Oosap, and there's also a pair of guards or
- 27:37soldiers or something behind him that are armed. And this is so terrible because
- 27:47what Clahador does is he like not only throws the fact that Usap is a
- 27:56known liar in his face, but then he says something like he's never been
- 28:02the same since his mother passed. But some fruits are so bruised they can't
- 28:07help but be rotten to the core, and there's nothing you can do about
- 28:14madness. So he just throws everything at us up one known liar, two
- 28:21traumatized by mom's death. Three probably just like a bad seed. Four likely
- 28:26insane. Like there's so many things that he's just tossing into the pot there
- 28:32to discredit him, and of course how MupA was eating this up. Kobe,
- 28:34on the other hand, is like, none of this sounds right to
- 28:37me, Like I don't like it, but there's no evidence otherwise, So
- 28:41all he can do is just be like, well, can I ask you
- 28:45a couple more questions? And of course Usup's like, look at his gloves.
- 28:48He had blades in his gloves, but he's wearing his regular white Butler's
- 28:52gloves, so that's not happening. I just also side note about like Butler's
- 28:56gloves, you guys, The principle behind Butler's gloves, right is if you
- 29:06are wearing something that shows up the dirt on items, you are going to
- 29:15be much more conscious of the state of the household altogether, because the state
- 29:22of your gloves is going to reflect the housekeeping going on in the home.
- 29:27And I really think that's actually a brilliant idea in a lot of ways.
- 29:33Have you guys ever tried wearing white gloves while doing like anything, because I've
- 29:40done it one or two times, not for cleanliness reasons, but because I
- 29:45was wearing long, like elbow length white gloves for a dress up of some
- 29:48kind. Oh my god, they get so disgusting so fucking fast. And
- 29:55I always think about how immaculate homes must have been where people were walking around
- 30:00with these types of gloves and they just stayed white. Like I can't even
- 30:04wrap my head around that level of attention to cleanliness at every stage of the
- 30:11home. I mean, you know, I at any given moment, there
- 30:15are several chores I could be doing because my house needs it. I could
- 30:19be sweeping and vacuuming today. I could be dusting everything in this room very
- 30:25likely, or getting the dust off of the ceiling fans or whatever, and
- 30:30base boards, and probably could go over my kitchen sink and my bathroom sink.
- 30:37Everything at all times could use a cleaning. I'll clean it, and
- 30:41I could use a cleaning just a week later. What it must have been
- 30:45like to live in a household that had multiple servants taking care of all of
- 30:49that for you? Unreal Like, what a fantasy. So this ends with
- 30:59Clahador basically closing the doors in Kobe's face in a really abrupt way that signals
- 31:06as much as anything that Kobe is onto something and this dude is ignoring him
- 31:14and trying to get away with something. We cut from there to the conversation
- 31:19between us Up and Kaya, because when he realizes the Marines aren't going to
- 31:26do jack shit, he's instantly like, well, the least I can do
- 31:30is get Kaya out of here, and he tries to tell her that Mary
- 31:34is dead, that Klahador isn't a butler, that he is trying to hurt
- 31:40you, he's a pirate, and this is when she kind of like,
- 31:45the way that I interpret this is that what he is saying is so frightening
- 31:52that she decides to go along with I don't believe you, and I'm angry
- 32:00you, instead of letting herself be afraid because it's like just so much easier.
- 32:07It's so much easier to be angry than afraid. And he like says,
- 32:15you've got to listen, and he grabs her wrist and she slaps him
- 32:19in the face and says, I don't think you know what the truth is
- 32:23anymore. And I was sort of like, I get that he shouldn't have
- 32:31grabbed her like that. He was probably too forceful, but also he's really
- 32:38afraid, and have you ever seen him treat you like this? Before,
- 32:43you know, Like, really, that's what it comes down to for me,
- 32:45is he has lied before, but has he ever gotten physical in any
- 32:51way that you have felt the need to be afraid Like that in and of
- 32:54itself to me, just says danger is real here, you know. So,
- 33:04like I said, it's very hard to watch. Meanwhile, in the
- 33:09kitchen, the clock is striking midnight. Klahador is saying Kaya is of age
- 33:15and we can finally put this farcet to bed. And I can't help but
- 33:22laugh because, like I think I said this in the anime as well,
- 33:27and I really want to preface this by saying I don't actually have a problem
- 33:30with this, but I can't not say something about it. The fact that
- 33:37he is planning to kill her like five minutes after she turns eighteen is hysterical,
- 33:49Like like, ultimately on this little island, what is anybody gonna do
- 33:58about it? Really? You know, like this is not something that I'm
- 34:02like, it would never hold up in a court of law. No,
- 34:06it probably wouldn't, And there doesn't seem to be a court of law in
- 34:10Syrup Village. It seems like that's not a thing that he is going to
- 34:15have to worry about. But I just keep laughing at the idea that he
- 34:19is even pretending, you know, that he's even attempting this farce, that
- 34:25they are doing this like legally and in a valid way, when sir,
- 34:31nobody is going to be fooled by this. It's it's quite apparent that this
- 34:37is something that you have been planning for a minute here, and I just
- 34:42really enjoy it. It's like literally the clock strikes midnight and he's like,
- 34:46hah, finally and I'm just going, wow, oh hey, sure,
- 34:53just go for it. I guess. So the results of this like no
- 35:02more hiding who we are. This kills me. They first turn off all
- 35:12of the lights in the house and drop like all of the shutters so that
- 35:15the place is locked down. This is meant to be a protective measure to
- 35:21keep people from getting in the house, but it results in everybody being locked
- 35:25in and there is no way to get out. When it's like this,
- 35:30this is the first moment where it starts to be like Kaya is maybe be
- 35:35leaving goose up and the door rattles and I love Nami comes in. It's
- 35:40a really great moment because you think, for a second, oh, they
- 35:43are already here, which makes more sense actually than what ends up happening,
- 35:51because initially clad Or is not even aware Kaya is still awake. So what
- 36:01he decides to do, really, if you step back and look at it,
- 36:06doesn't make a lot of sense. He's like wandering the house with his
- 36:09blade gloves, going Kai and already behaving like we're playing a game of cat
- 36:19and mouse here, But there's no reason for him to actually think they're playing
- 36:22a game of cat and mouse, like what it What he should think,
- 36:29I assume is happening is that she is asleep still upstairs. The only reason
- 36:37that I can imagine that they that he thinks the she's aware is because Nami
- 36:46knocked that one girl out, So maybe Nami rushed to tell Kaya. But
- 36:53you know, oh uh sorry, Florence says, don't think they turned out
- 36:59the lights. The lights dimming was just a result of the power it took
- 37:02to activate the shutters. You're right, because I'm looking at the scene now
- 37:07and the lights are very very dim, so I think that's why I saw
- 37:10it that way. But it's everything. The lighting has gotten quite dramatic at
- 37:16this point, But you're right, the lights are technically still on. I
- 37:21think they've just really gone very dim and you all I have already said,
- 37:29what an amazing fucking casting choice Kuro is I you guys, I just can't
- 37:42his moment where he walks through those doors, because we first have his like
- 37:46two henchmen and they're getting into their outfits, which are ridiculous. They are
- 37:52so silly. I love it. I'm so glad that they decided to keep
- 37:54a lot of the costumes for the henchmen, at least very very true to
- 38:00the original show. I wish that the villains were getting kept the same as
- 38:07well. Clahador Is is pretty similar, but you know, the main one
- 38:13that I'm gonna keep going back to is Alvida. I wish that they had
- 38:15made her costume as fucking bonkers as it really was. These two sidekicks though,
- 38:22like the fucking half mask with the cat ears and the cloak for the
- 38:27fat guy and then the blue haired girl with these shorts and the sleeveless vest
- 38:32with the bow tie, Like what even are we doing? So the two
- 38:38of them, it's extra intimidating because they are so goofy seeming that when Clahador
- 38:44comes through that door in the center panel, and he has his blades on
- 38:52and is like flaring them like he is starting a dance, genuinely super intimidating.
- 39:02Like I just love all of the imagery of this. He sort of
- 39:07like stands before the camera and then he turns and as he walks away,
- 39:13he brings the hand down in front of the camera so that the blades like
- 39:21just sort of flutter over. It just gorgeous, Like it looks so good.
- 39:28And I just think this guy is genuinely scary. I mean, this
- 39:32whole scene with him walking through the house, it's this is done to death.
- 39:39There are so many properties out there with a bad man who is trying
- 39:46to find the protagonist who is hiding in a room, and he is shooting
- 39:52through walls, stabbing through walls, overturning things, whatever, And it all
- 39:57depends on whether you really be leave the bad guy wants to kill the person
- 40:02and whether you really believe that the danger of them being found is like controllable
- 40:14and imminent and all of that works in this scene. You really believe that
- 40:23if they make one false move, he will hear them. And what I
- 40:28mean by this is and I think you guys are all gonna get what I
- 40:30mean, have you seen a scene like this where a person's like actually kind
- 40:38of making noise, but the bad guy just doesn't seem to hear them.
- 40:44Do you get what I'm saying? There are so many like that where allegedly
- 40:51they have to be so quiet, but really when they're running and hiding and
- 40:55moving between place to place and whatever, it's like kind of laugh and so
- 41:00there's a sense of almost, well, he can't be looking that hard,
- 41:04you know what I mean. My favorite example of a really good version of
- 41:08this is actually not with people. It's the scene in the kitchen in Jurassic
- 41:15Park where the kids are hiding from the velociraptors and any noise, like,
- 41:20because they have a whole different like sensory input than human beings do. The
- 41:28terror of that is really particular, Like it feels so heightened, and because
- 41:36of how scary Clador seems, I assign him enhanced senses, even though I
- 41:45do not think that's actually true of him. I feel as if he has
- 41:50better hearing, a better sense of smell than a regular person. So every
- 41:54moment that they are hiding, I am truly afraid for them. When he
- 42:00is stabbing through things, he comes so close to actually getting Kaya a couple
- 42:06times, and when the blades cut through and she jumps and claps a hand
- 42:12over her mouth, her acting is flawless. She genuinely looks like she barely
- 42:19caught herself from screaming, like it was a second later with her hand and
- 42:23it would have just come out. And the whole scene. I just was
- 42:29on the edge of my seat, even though I know all of these people
- 42:31are going to be fine. I know all of this, like how this
- 42:35winds up didn't matter. I was so afraid for them and this you know,
- 42:43I'm getting ahead of myself here because like this chase scene doesn't quite happen
- 42:47until Nami comes in and starts to be like Kaya, think back to when
- 42:52you started getting sick. Did that begin when Clahador came into your life?
- 42:59And I really loved the moment where us up is like taking a moment and
- 43:04looking at the you know, the blue stuff in her room and thinking like,
- 43:08oh my god, I gave you that tea, like, you know,
- 43:13knowing that you were inadvertently complicit, it doesn't matter. It was an
- 43:17invertent. That is a horrible thing to find out that this person you cared
- 43:23about who really like, who was suffering so badly and what you came for
- 43:32was to make them feel better. And then to find out that they were
- 43:37being put through this in part because you were like giving them the poison.
- 43:43That is a horrible thing to live with, even if it wasn't intentional.
- 43:47So yeah, this whole, this whole bit here, it's just really I
- 43:53just felt for us up so bad, this poor guy. So then we
- 43:59have the uh, you know, Zoro finally managing to make it up out
- 44:07of the well. It has taken a minute. And of course, because
- 44:13we have him here and we are going to be you know, we've got
- 44:19a couple of like sidekicks to deal with, there has to be a fight
- 44:22scene between all of them. So as klah Haador is attempting to find Kaya,
- 44:36he has, by the way, handed Loufy over to Kobe and Helmepo
- 44:40in order to sort of get them out of his hair. He's just like,
- 44:44yeah, take this guy. This is perfect. I don't want him
- 44:45around you guys would like to arrest him. Ideal, good, good on
- 44:52ya take him. Which I really enjoy the moment of that as well,
- 44:57because you can see us up realizing he didn't ask enough questions when they were
- 45:01like, we're looking for a straw hat pirate and he's like, oh,
- 45:05Lufy, yeah, I can show you Lufy. So not only are these
- 45:07guys not believing his story about what's going on with Clahador, he has led
- 45:16the cops to Lufy explicitly and just like handed him over on a silver platter
- 45:22and betrayed him when he had just finished describing Lufy as his other second best
- 45:29friend. Wow, Usup is having a really really bad night, so they
- 45:37have us Up or they have Lufy, who finally like recovers from this poison.
- 45:44And it's never really explained. I think we all make the assumption that
- 45:51he is okay because of his devil fruit powers, that he just has like
- 45:54a more a stronger constitution than a regular person. So he's starting to,
- 46:04like Lufy's starting to wake up, and how Meppo turns around and is like,
- 46:07do you have something to say? And Lufy just vomits that blue soup
- 46:13all over him. Truly a horrible moment. I mean, I'm not mad
- 46:17at like how Mepo getting thrown up on Great love It, Yeah, but
- 46:23anytime that somebody gets puked on it's so like it squiks me out the same
- 46:30way that like seeing lots of bugs crawling around squigs me out. So Lufy
- 46:38is talking to Kobe and it says, oh my god, Kobe, I've
- 46:42got to go back the butler. He's going to kill Kaya. And of
- 46:45course you see Kobe just being like, god, damn it. One,
- 46:51I really didn't want that to be true, but you're saying it too,
- 46:54so it has to be. And two, I am under direct orders to
- 47:00bring you in. And Lufy's like you said, you wanted to help innocent
- 47:05people, and Kaya is innocent, and all of a sudden, hell,
- 47:09Meppo pulls a gun and is like, screw this. Father always said a
- 47:15dead pirate weighs the same as a live one. And what I find funny
- 47:22here I don't know. I don't think Kobe remembers like Lufy doesn't get hurt
- 47:31if somebody shoots him, you know, Like I kind of wanted Kobe to
- 47:36be like, Okay, go ahead and shoot him. Of course that would
- 47:39be very out of character for him, for somebody who cares about his friend
- 47:44here and doesn't actually want him hurt, even though he's obeying orders, which
- 47:46would end in Louviy being killed, so I kind of did want to be
- 47:51like, just go ahead then whatever, but uh, he gets between them
- 47:58and it's just like come up, Oh what are you doing? And he
- 48:02just says, pirate, get going, We're going to start walking toward a
- 48:07ship or you're gonna die. And then you hear this noise and Helmepo turns
- 48:13and there is Zorro standing there with the two guards that had been with them
- 48:16on the ground. And the look on Helmepo's face, the fact that this
- 48:22is the guy he's facing with, like there is nobody that I think would
- 48:29intimidate him more effectively. And Zorro says, hay haircut is what he says
- 48:36to him, which I found hilarious. He walks up to them and he's
- 48:40very quiet and very understated the way he is with everything. And as he
- 48:47walks up, you think there's gonna be a thing. He doesn't even look
- 48:53at Helmepo. He just punches him without even giving him like that is.
- 49:00It's so disrespectful and how Mepo goes down hard. So Loviy begins walking away
- 49:07and Kobe yells, hold it right there, by orders of the Marines,
- 49:12I'm placing you under arrest. And I really enjoy Zoro's reaction to this.
- 49:17He just pauses and puts his hands on the hilts of his sword, like
- 49:22all right, we gotta deal with this. Like there's no animosity coming off
- 49:27him. It's just a pause of like, well, you've got to deal
- 49:30with red tape sometimes, you know, like a very sort of resigned energy.
- 49:36Loofy turns around and comes back, and I love this actor. Guys.
- 49:43God, he's good. Oh my god, I didn't even think of
- 49:47that. I'm sorry, guys. Florian's in the chat saying Zoro having gone
- 49:52the complete opposite direction as the place he was trying to go, despite being
- 49:55able to literally see the mansion from the well, because Zura Florien, I
- 50:02didn't even question why Zora was on this path here. I straight up just
- 50:07was like, oh, he came to rescue Loofy. Why would he know
- 50:09to rescue Loofy. He wouldn't know that he was in the fucking well when
- 50:14Lufy got got so, of course that's not on purpose. I didn't even
- 50:16think about that. That's amazing. But anyway, what I was saying was
- 50:22the actor who plays Loofy, I love him so much, because he is
- 50:24so good at going from sunshine, pure sweetness and light to oh oh oh,
- 50:32he's uh, he's a little scary, isn't he. He just on
- 50:37a dime. And this is a perfect blend here because he's trying to be
- 50:40kind to Kobe while also brooking no fucking arguments, and so there's like a
- 50:50kind of grim smile to this. I know you've got a job to do,
- 50:57but I'm gonna go back and help my friend. And he's stepping towards
- 51:02him as he says this, so don't try to stop me, and Kobe
- 51:07just takes a step or two back and nods, and there's a real like
- 51:13okay, okay, Bud, like it's not even I know you have to
- 51:19do this. You're a good guy. That felt pure intimidation like I don't
- 51:23want to. I don't want any of this smoke and I can tell I
- 51:27don't. And then Lufy puts his hat on and tightens the little string around
- 51:32his neck and he runs off and just leaves Kobe. There's just standing with
- 51:37three unconscious bodies around him, and I was like, sucks to suck.
- 51:43So they are heading back as Kuro is wandering through the house, stabbing one
- 51:50object after another, just terrorizing Kaya and talking about how like tedious it was
- 51:59to wait on her, and all the bullshit that he asked her to do
- 52:02or that she asked him to do, and just really like the concept of
- 52:08this is so hurtful. Somebody that you thought cared about you, that you
- 52:15thought was doing things to care for you, because they actually had affection towards
- 52:20you and that they wanted you to be okay, and to find out not
- 52:23only were they behind making you sick, but also had utter contempt for you
- 52:31every second of every day. I I, that is so upsetting. Oh,
- 52:40I'm sorry all those comments were Sarahm, not Florian. Sorry about that,
- 52:45Sarahm. That is your credit. I'm giving now apologies for not giving
- 52:49you proper credit and crediting Florian. But appreciate you Florian letting me know.
- 52:55But yeah, so this whole thing is so like, there's something so humilily
- 53:00about that, you know, finding out that this person was like mocking you
- 53:05in their head while you thought they were doing their best to be kind to
- 53:07you. And I was sort of expecting for him to say that he was
- 53:14responsible for killing her parents. I don't remember if that's I feel like that
- 53:20was what happened in the anime, and you guys can correct me if I'm
- 53:24wrong. Maybe he does say this and I just missed it, but I
- 53:28had been sort of waiting for it, so I feel like I would have
- 53:30noticed if that didn't happen, or I I if that did happen. So
- 53:40anyway, Lufy comes in at this point, and we have a couple moments
- 53:45of him like stepping forward and feeling a cut, and it's like the person
- 53:52who slashed him was totally invisible, which we know is due to his devil
- 54:00fruit power. Now another thing, they don't ever specifically state what his devil
- 54:09fruit was. I don't believe so anyway, which I do think is kind
- 54:17of surprising, because it's sort of like important to things a lot of the
- 54:24time what a person is specifically capable of and what they aren't. And with
- 54:34Buggy at least they specifically mentioned the chop chop fruit and what it is that
- 54:37he can do. I don't think they say Curo's fruit, and it's just
- 54:43sort of like, oh, yeah, he could just be very very fast
- 54:45and that's all it is. Oh what I'm sorry, Florian says he does
- 54:54not have a devil fruit. He's just super fast, even in the anime.
- 55:00That's insane. I did not realize that. Okay, that's what I
- 55:05was almost about to call it the shave technique. Actually, Seraphim, so
- 55:07that's amazing. Saraphim is saying he doesn't have a fruit. It's just a
- 55:10technique he can do. It's an early example of the shave technique. CP
- 55:15nine can do. That's what I was thinking. But it's just weird that
- 55:19this is introduced so so early, and then we don't really see another person
- 55:22able to do this stuff until so much later. Oh my god, I
- 55:24don't even know how I miss that. Let's see, Saraphim says, and
- 55:30then he rants about how she's done nothing with her life. Well, duh,
- 55:32you've been keeping her too sick to do anything, asshole. That bothered
- 55:37me too, Saraphim, Like, I would be so dead because he would
- 55:42say this shit, and I wouldn't be able to resist arguing with him and
- 55:45just giving away my hiding place and just be like, you, dickhead,
- 55:47that's not how it. And then I'd be like, shit, why did
- 55:51I say that. It's like when people at that meme that's going around of
- 55:53like, you know, Michael Myers is standing in your living room with a
- 55:59knife and you're hiding behind the curtain or something and you're keeping totally quiet,
- 56:06but then he yells like shake it, and somebody just can't help but yell
- 56:12back shake it like a polaroid picture, Like that is what I would be
- 56:15doing there. So anyway, the fight between Zoro and blue haired girl and
- 56:24fat guy like kind of a weird fight. Didn't love it. It was
- 56:31like entertaining, but it was so distracting because they are so goofy in some
- 56:38ways. And I do appreciate that she gets his swords at one point,
- 56:45not all of them, I don't think. I think he's got one left.
- 56:47But the silliness of the two of them just never made me really feel
- 56:52like worried for him. Even when they were winning. I couldn't get to
- 56:58the point that I was actually concerned. That's fine, not every fight is
- 57:02going to be a winner. I don't. I don't mind that. So
- 57:07of course we then have Loufy in the end getting the better of him by
- 57:15grabbing his wrists. He had tried to like impale loofy on these blades.
- 57:21Lufy pulls his hands apart to create an opening, and then he says gumma
- 57:29gum, and that's the way he says at this time, not dumb gum,
- 57:31gumma gum, and then gum dumb bell and it's a head butt,
- 57:37which I don't remember this move actually, but head butts him straight out the
- 57:40window. And it's so funny to me because he goes flying out the window
- 57:45and everybody is just just like, oh, okay, that guy's dealt with
- 57:47We won, And I'm like, he just went out the window like he's
- 57:51right outside. Guys, I would not call this a straight up victory.
- 57:52You don't know if he's gonna just turn around and come back in. But
- 57:57once they come running downstairs and they've got this shape, are the shutters of
- 58:00the doors pulled up, and the two henchmen are tied up on the ground,
- 58:07it's pretty clear, all right, well we've come out the other side.
- 58:13And also the sun is out at this point, so it's an indication
- 58:16that quite a bit of time has passed. Actually, I love that Zoro
- 58:25says, too bad, we can't collect their bounty, and I was just
- 58:29like, yeah, I would not recommend that Nan. He says, we've
- 58:32got to get the fuck out of here. They're after us, and Lucy
- 58:36says, well, what are we gonna how? We don't even have a
- 58:39ship, And of course this is when Kaya speaks up and says, yes
- 58:45you do, and they go down to the docks. And I was this
- 58:51was when I was sort of waiting for Mary to turn up and be just
- 58:54fine, because that was how it went in the anime. Basic was like
- 59:00it seemed like he was dead and then he turns up to be like,
- 59:02oh, I built you a ship. But it's just said here that his
- 59:07memory will live on with them. And I do want to like cop to
- 59:13the fucking hilarious mistake. In hindsight, I think it was like last episode
- 59:17that I was going, what is the sheep guy's name? Again? Guys,
- 59:21what is his name? I can't remember his name? How did I
- 59:23forget? It's Mary? The name of the ship is going Mary because of
- 59:28him? Like I just completely fucking brain farted on that one. That was
- 59:34really embarrassing. So and I will say too, like the way that the
- 59:43the mass or what is it called figurehead of this ship is carved, I
- 59:49actually quite like this. It's not as cartoonish in terms of the way that
- 1:00:00it's painted and everything. The overall shape and everything is like essentially identical,
- 1:00:07but it doesn't have the pupils in the eyes. It's all monochromatic and kind
- 1:00:14of roughly done in a way that I think is really really beautiful and works
- 1:00:19quite well in comparison to the design in the show that you guys know,
- 1:00:22I had a hard time warming up to a little bit. So this is
- 1:00:27the moment where they invite us up to come with them, and he clearly
- 1:00:32is feeling awkward because he really wants to go, but he feels some real
- 1:00:37responsibility toward Kaya and feels guilty about leaving her. I love that Lufy specifically
- 1:00:45mentions his father and it's like, I need a sharpshooter, like Yasup,
- 1:00:50I saw what you were able to do with your slinging shot. This is
- 1:00:54exactly the kind of guy that I need on my crew. And then yeah,
- 1:01:00he says like I couldn't leave Sirrup village. What about Kaya? She
- 1:01:05needs me? And Kaya is like, hey, Bun, I know you
- 1:01:08mean well and everything, but I have had somebody like looking over me and
- 1:01:12telling me what to do and stuff forever, and I think it's time for
- 1:01:15me to look after myself, and I think I'll hand the shipyard over to
- 1:01:21somebody else and maybe try and become a doctor or something like that. And
- 1:01:27they have a kiss here, which I can't recall if they did in the
- 1:01:30anime or not, but you know, the two of them had been sort
- 1:01:32of protesting about being romantically interested in one another. And I love when she
- 1:01:40says, like, oh, the Adventures of Captain Usup and Loufy off to
- 1:01:45the side is just like they do know I'm the captain, right, which
- 1:01:50they have that argument later. And I had forgotten that this was a whole
- 1:01:53thing that Usup was like assuming he was going to be captain and that had
- 1:01:57to be squashed. Let's see. Uh sorry, Saraphim says. The memes
- 1:02:06are already declaring a certain bird boy is going to be a roast turkey comes
- 1:02:10season two since they killed Mary, I really kind of hope, so Saraphim
- 1:02:17like, it's I know, it's a fucked up thing to be like a
- 1:02:19hope he dies, but like you know, uh, Florian says, I
- 1:02:22like that us Up and Kaya got a kiss in the live action. Oh,
- 1:02:24Okay, so it wasn't an anime. Usup is the only straw hat
- 1:02:28with a love of interest where both sides are into it and I do not
- 1:02:30care about romance, but I liked this. I never thought about the fact
- 1:02:35that they like both sides aren't into it with everybody else pretty much. But
- 1:02:39yeah, I guess that's true. Saraphim says, Hey, now I'm sure
- 1:02:45Lufy's feelings for meat are reciprocated. I'm overtime, so I have to kind
- 1:02:51of speed through the rest of this. But mostly what we get is the
- 1:02:54argument about who's captain us Up drawing an amazing flag, but of course that
- 1:02:59gets uh knocked down by Luthy. And then when we go to the Marines
- 1:03:04ship, we have poor Kobe being like, well, I failed my first
- 1:03:08mission and completely failed to get him. And I thought what we were going
- 1:03:14to have was because we hear Garp say you flushed them out, and I
- 1:03:20thought we were going to zero in on the little lifeboat because Kuroh is seen
- 1:03:28rowing away from the island just like manually rowing alone. I thought Garp was
- 1:03:34going to be like, well, there's kuro in a fucking row boat alone.
- 1:03:38We got him but no, he is looking at the going Mary and
- 1:03:43saying, you flushed them out. And every time, of course that poor
- 1:03:47Kobe succeeds in one thing, he fails in another, so he's flushed them
- 1:03:52out. But he also doesn't want his friend Loofy to get caught, so
- 1:03:57he has extremely mixed feelings about this. And the straw Hat crew are sitting
- 1:04:03like chatting about how everything's gonna be smooth sailing from here on, when all
- 1:04:09of a sudden, there's like these horrible sounds and they realize they're being fired
- 1:04:13at. So they go out on the deck and see that the Marines have
- 1:04:16zeroed in already, and Lufy sees Garp and says grandpa. So that shit
- 1:04:25is let out of the bag quite early in this in comparison to like episode
- 1:04:31four hundred of the anime. I'm not mad at it, but it is
- 1:04:35funny and that's how it ends, so I can't wait to watch the next
- 1:04:41one. Guys. I'm really really excited. So thank you all so much
- 1:04:44for hanging out with me. I appreciate you all a lot. Thank you
- 1:04:46Gabby for commissioning this. Hope you all are enjoying the coverage and until next
- 1:04:50time, DIDLU motherfuckers, That was an unspoiled network pat
