- 0:00Hi, it's Christy and welcome back to Spacious Success.
- 0:10Today we're talking about something that you already feel, you intuitively feel it, but
- 0:16maybe you don't just know it in your bones.
- 0:19And that is female friendships aren't just nice to have.
- 0:24They're actually lifelines, chats, coffee dates, voice notes, memes that make you cry
- 0:30laugh, wet your pads, these aren't just indulgences, they're biological necessities.
- 0:36And by the end of this episode, you'll understand why connection, human connection is one
- 0:42of the most potent antidotes to stress and overwhelm and how to protect and prioritise it
- 0:49even when your life feels too full.
- 0:52So pause this episode and send it to a friend, the friend that needs to hear this.
- 0:57Hi, I'm Dr. Christy Goodwin, a neuroperformance scientist, speaker and executive coach who
- 1:02learned the hard way the chasing success can come at a cost.
- 1:07After burnout landed me in hospital, I made it my mission to help ambitious women who
- 1:13are done trading their health and happiness for high performance.
- 1:18On spacious success, I share science-backed strategies and real stories to help you flourish
- 1:26as a female at work and beyond so you can stop paying the success tax.
- 1:33A couple of months ago, I had one of those days, you know the kind, the kind where your
- 1:38to-do list is endless, the house looks like it's been rated and every single device in
- 1:44the house was pinging at me simultaneously.
- 1:47I'm still trying to decide if the washing machine's irritating sound to signal the end
- 1:54of the cycle or my teen snapchat blowing up with pins is more irritating, I undecided
- 2:00it as yet.
- 2:02By mid afternoon, I was ready to snap and then my phone burst.
- 2:07It was a photo and a 22nd voice note from a girlfriend, a quick photo of her mismatching
- 2:15shoes that she just discovered at 217 p.m. that day.
- 2:20After a chaotic morning at home with her kids, I laughed out aloud at just like that.
- 2:27My nervous system shifted.
- 2:29Ah, I could feel it, my shoulders dropped.
- 2:34I exhaled, nothing in my external world changed.
- 2:39The deadlines were still there, the noise, the chaos, the mess, they were all still there,
- 2:45and that damn washing machine, well it was still singing at me because I hadn't unloaded
- 2:49it.
- 2:50But inside, I felt lighter and that's the power of connection.
- 2:55It's not gossip, it's not frivolous, it's baked into our biology especially as females.
- 3:01Here's what we know, loneliness amplifies stress, female friendships buffer it.
- 3:09The UCLA-10 number friend research found that when women connect, when we connect during
- 3:16our stressful moments, our cortisol levels drop significantly.
- 3:20You see, oxytocin, which is the bonding hormone, the social bonding hormone, released when
- 3:26we connect with other people, especially females, it interacts with estrogen to create calm
- 3:32and soothe our nervous system.
- 3:35This is why talking at our laughing or venting will literally change your physiology and
- 3:41your psychology.
- 3:43Your breath will steady.
- 3:46Your blood pressure will drop and I can track this with my wearable device.
- 3:50Your brain waves will shift, you should get out of the beta-bizzy brain state.
- 3:56Your hormones are rebalanced and the long-term impact is just as profound.
- 4:02A monosh university study that followed 1,500 women aged 70 years and above found that
- 4:09those with three or more close friends were 30% less likely to die from heart disease.
- 4:18But here's the problem, despite the benefits, today ambitious women are feeling more isolated
- 4:25than ever.
- 4:26A 2024 Women's Health Survey found that 76% of women said that their friends are crucial
- 4:32for their well-being.
- 4:34Yet modern life leaves them little time to actually nurture those connections.
- 4:39A Sydney University study also revealed that extended periods of loneliness, triple,
- 4:46yes, triple, a woman's risk of dying early.
- 4:50Premature or death because we are lonely.
- 4:522023 Research also found that 53% of women in the workplace report experiencing loneliness
- 5:00because of their job and it only gets worse the more senior they become.
- 5:06Nelly 70% of senior women and executives said that their feelings of loneliness increased
- 5:12as their careers progressed.
- 5:14Think about that.
- 5:17The higher women climb, the more ambitious we become, the lonelier we often feel.
- 5:22And I see this with the women that I coach.
- 5:25It's not because we're failing, it's because we're fighting our biology in a system that
- 5:31keeps us often feeling isolated, always on and ironically disconnected from the very
- 5:38thing that protects us most, our female friends and colleagues.
- 5:42What can you do?
- 5:43How do we buffer ourselves against the stress storm with connection?
- 5:48Here are four really simple strategies that I've applied to my life and I share with my
- 5:52clients.
- 5:53Read Frame Friendship as Health, Not an Indulgence.
- 5:56Coffee with a girlfriend is just important for your health as going to the gym or seeing
- 6:01your GP, schedule it, protect it, treat it like medicine because it is.
- 6:08Don't underestimate the water cooler chat with a colleague in the office or the banter
- 6:13in the kitchen.
- 6:15Number two, your micro-connections count.
- 6:19Don't wait for the big moments, the weekend away, although book those in too, the girl's
- 6:23weekend away is never about investment.
- 6:27Send the meme, record the two-minute voice notice you walk to school, share the little things.
- 6:33These tiny moments of connection still trigger oxytocin and calm your nervous system down.
- 6:40Number three, invest in your inner circle.
- 6:42The Monash University study showed us the power that comes from close friends.
- 6:47Not dozens of online service level acquaintances choose two to three people that you can be messy,
- 6:54honest, vulnerable, real with.
- 6:57When my husband was diagnosed with cancer late last year, I'll admit my inner and my extended
- 7:03circles were my lifeline.
- 7:05Number four, be one of the three.
- 7:09Don't just find your three, be someone else's three.
- 7:12Check in, send a message, show up, drop around a meal when they're sick.
- 7:18Buy them flowers, send them the funny menopause meme because we're all buffering each other.
- 7:25So here's your reframe.
- 7:28Female friendships aren't optional.
- 7:30They're not a luxury and they're not something you should be deferring until you've got
- 7:34enough time.
- 7:35They are literally survival.
- 7:37That late night rant, the school gate laugh, the kitchen table cry, that's not gossip.
- 7:43That's chemistry.
- 7:45It's your body healing through connection.
- 7:47It's regulating your stress.
- 7:50And in a world that tells women to suck it up and to keep pushing, the sciences do the opposite.
- 7:57Keep connecting, keep laughing, keep showing up.
- 8:02Keep choosing each other because behind every strong accomplished ambitious woman is usually
- 8:10another woman or a network of women making sure that she doesn't feel alone.
- 8:15I'm Dr. Christy Goodland, a neuroperformance scientist, speaker, author, executive coach
- 8:20and a mum.

- 8:36your mum, your aunt because it might just save their stress levels and maybe even their
- 8:42lives.
- 8:43Until next time, bye for now.
