- 0:45Speaker 1: Norman MacDonald produced and directed. We now take you back
- 0:49Speaker 1: to the original broadcast.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Gun smoke. Around Dodge City and in the territory on west,
- 1:04Speaker 2: there's just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:08Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Marshal and the smell.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Of gun smoke.
- 1:12Speaker 4: Gun smoke.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Sun Smoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the violence
- 1:33Speaker 2: that moves left with young America. And the story of
- 1:37Speaker 2: a man who moves left.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, the United States Marshal.
- 1:43Speaker 5: The first man they look for and the last they
- 1:45Speaker 5: want to meet. It's a chance, a jab, and it
- 1:49Speaker 5: makes a man watchful.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Morning, Miles. Morning.
- 1:57Speaker 6: 17 minutes, Matthew.
- 2:25Speaker 2: 17 minutes exactly since I sent that boy to find you.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Oh, is that so?
- 2:30Speaker 2: A crime has occurred, Matthew. Them dawdling over your breakfast
- 2:34Speaker 2: coffee is not like you to bring the carpet to justice.
- 2:37Speaker 3: The boy said somebody broke into your store last night, Marlowe.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Aye?
- 2:40Speaker 3: How'd they get in?
- 2:41Speaker 2: Well, by breaking the glass in the back window.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Two panes at $ 4.
- 2:45Speaker 2: 32 to pay. You know, Miles, I.
- 2:48Speaker 5: Told you a year ago you ought to put gratings
- 2:50Speaker 5: over those windows like the rest of the stores in town.
- 2:53Speaker 2: No, but gratings cost money, Matthew.
- 2:55Speaker 3: And so do burglaries. Now, what do they take?
- 2:58Speaker 2: They're like beans from filing a list. Now, here's exactly
- 3:03Speaker 2: what you think. One blue blanket, retail price $ 6. 40. One
- 3:09Speaker 2: blue denim jacket, size 36, retail price $ 3.
- 3:12Speaker 6: 00.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Prices aren't important, Miles.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Well, to me they are. I have a certain respect
- 3:20Speaker 2: for money.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Yeah, so I've heard. What else is missing?
- 3:23Speaker 2: You know, let me see. Uh, one hat, gray, and of.
- 3:28Speaker 6: Course, finest quality.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I know. I got one, Miles. Go on with
- 3:31Speaker 3: the rest of your list.
- 3:32Speaker 2: All right. Uh, one pair of boots, size six, untooled,
- 3:37Speaker 2: inlaid with kid retail price.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Here, let me take a look at it. What do
- 3:40Speaker 3: you want? All right, thanks.
- 3:44Speaker 5: Uh, two flannel shirts, five-pound slab of bacon, three pounds
- 3:47Speaker 5: of dried beans, pound of salt, bucks of.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Matches, a skillet.
- 3:53Speaker 5: Looks like you've just grub-staked somebody, huh? I expect you
- 3:56Speaker 5: to recover each.
- 3:57Speaker 2: And every one of those items.
- 3:59Speaker 3: I'll try to. One canteen, one hand axe, two pounds
- 4:03Speaker 3: of cheese, and one.
- 4:04Speaker 2: 144.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Caliber Colt revolver.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Model 6A. Retails at $ 56. 80. What about cartridges?
- 4:14Speaker 3: You don't have them on the list.
- 4:15Speaker 2: There are a multitude of cartridges I'm expecting to case
- 4:18Speaker 2: in today.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Well, the gun won't be much use without them. I
- 4:22Speaker 3: wonder if any place else was robbed last night.
- 4:25Speaker 7: Good heavens.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Now, what's the matter?
- 4:27Speaker 2: Ah, here's something else that's been taken, Matthew.
- 4:31Speaker 7: There were three bottles right there on.
- 4:33Speaker 2: That shelf, and now there's only two bottles of one. Yeah. Perfume.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Imported all the way from Paris, France. What would a
- 4:43Speaker 2: man like that grub-stake himself want to steal perfume for?
- 4:47Speaker 3: Maybe it wasn't the man, Mylon.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Huh?
- 4:50Speaker 3: The size of those boots and the jacket. It's blue!
- 4:53Speaker 2: Blue! Well, what in the name of heaven would she
- 4:56Speaker 2: be up to?
- 4:57Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Mr. Jones?
- 5:00Speaker 3: Yeah, what is it, sir? Wilbur Jones.
- 5:01Speaker 7: Somebody come into his store, held him up a while ago.
- 5:04Speaker 3: What? Did he recognize him?
- 5:06Speaker 1: No, sir.
- 5:07Speaker 7: He stuck a gun in his back, made him go
- 5:08Speaker 7: into the storeroom, and locked the door on him. He
- 5:10Speaker 7: said whoever it was had a real soft voice like
- 5:12Speaker 7: a kid.
- 5:13Speaker 6: Mr.
- 5:13Speaker 7: Jones hadn't been to the bank yet, so at least
- 5:16Speaker 7: there wasn't no.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Cash, so.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Well, what was stolen?
- 5:19Speaker 2: Nothing, except a box of.
- 5:21Speaker 7: 44 caliber cartridges.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Let me smell that pigeon again, will you, Max? Yeah, sure, Kitty, do.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Not anything I know.
- 6:00Speaker 2: I'd sure like to.
- 6:01Speaker 8: You say Miles has got two more.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Bottles of it? No, I got this sample from one
- 6:05Speaker 3: of them.
- 6:06Speaker 9: Shouldn't be too hard to tie down.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Yeah, provided the person who stole it opens the bottle.
- 6:12Speaker 7: Well, I'll keep sipping the drink now.
- 6:17Speaker 3: All day, Miss Kitty.
- 6:18Speaker 7: Sniffing and smelling around all the time. It's like a
- 6:21Speaker 7: couple hound dogs. But we ain't caught a whiff of this, sir. Well,
- 6:24Speaker 7: you wouldn't be likely to, Chester. Maybe this girl, if
- 6:28Speaker 7: I is a girl, is already left behind.
- 6:30Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 6:32Speaker 3: In a way, I kind of hope so.
- 6:35Speaker 7: She might have wanted to be done just to protect herself.
- 6:38Speaker 3: She wasn't protecting herself when she shoved it in Will
- 6:41Speaker 3: Jonas' back this morning, Kitty. I know, but it was
- 6:43Speaker 3: empty then. It's not empty now.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Well, by golly.
- 6:49Speaker 7: I was just wondering who I'd let buy me.
- 6:51Speaker 3: A drink this evening.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 6:53Speaker 3: As far as I'm concerned, Doc, you're still wondering.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, good evening, Eddie.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Hello, Doc.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Hello, Doc.
- 7:01Speaker 7: Oh, say, I understand somebody borrowed a few things off
- 7:05Speaker 7: old man McCagg last night.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Yeah, they did, Doc. Oh, they did, huh?
- 7:09Speaker 7: Crime rampant, and the local law inhabits a saloon.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Oh.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Here, Doc. Smell this, will you?
- 7:17Speaker 7: Say, what do you do, Matt?
- 7:20Speaker 3: Put it on your hair or use it when you shave?
- 7:23Speaker 3: You ever smell that scent anywhere before, Doc?
- 7:26Speaker 2: Slightly familiar. No.
- 7:28Speaker 3: What do you mean, slightly familiar?
- 7:30Speaker 7: Well, I smell the same thing earlier today somewhere.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Where, Doc?
- 7:36Speaker 3: Where did you smell it today? I don't even remember. Say, Max,
- 7:42Speaker 3: where do you think we get up a poker game? Doc,
- 7:43Speaker 3: will you think where did you smell this perfume today?
- 7:48Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 7:48Speaker 7: Let me see now.
- 7:49Speaker 3: I was all over town at one time or another.
- 7:52Speaker 2: It wasn't at the livery stable, naturally.
- 7:55Speaker 3: It was at the bank.
- 7:57Speaker 7: Oh, forget it, man. I don't have the slightest idea.
- 7:59Speaker 9: Uh-oh, uh-oh.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Uh-oh. Now I remember, sir.
- 8:04Speaker 7: I was talking to Mr. Dobie in the lobby of
- 8:06Speaker 7: the Dodge house.
- 8:07Speaker 6: And this kid came in.
- 8:09Speaker 3: The Dodge house, huh? That's right. He leaked the stuff. Yes,
- 8:13Speaker 3: that's where it was.
- 8:14Speaker 7: He rented himself a room there.
- 8:16Speaker 2: But why?
- 8:16Speaker 9: I'll tell you later, Doc.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Justin, come on.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Come on. It's the next door on the left there, Mr. Jones.
- 8:38Speaker 2: According to what Mr. Dobie said.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Yeah. Be careful of that water, Vickie.
- 8:42Speaker 7: Do you reckon we'll put up a fight?
- 8:45Speaker 2: That she will?
- 8:47Speaker 3: Or whichever? I don't know, Chester. All right, go ahead
- 8:52Speaker 3: and knock. Let's get clear before the door opens up.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 8:57Speaker 4: I'll fetch you some drinking water.
- 9:05Speaker 9: Leave it out here in the hall.
- 9:07Speaker 7: Okay, but you better get it before the ice melts.
- 9:12Speaker 3: All right, walk off the way, sir. Get your hands up.
- 9:25Speaker 3: You're under arrest.
- 9:26Speaker 4: What?
- 9:26Speaker 3: Chester, come and take the gun.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Okay.
- 9:28Speaker 3: All right, get back in the room. No use getting
- 9:30Speaker 3: the whole hotel stirred up.
- 9:31Speaker 9: I ain't done nothing. You got no call to arrest me.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Inside, I said.
- 9:37Speaker 7: Johnny, if you wasn't right, Miss.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Gillen, it is a girl.
- 9:40Speaker 9: I wouldn't mind your own business. Who are you anyway?
- 9:44Speaker 7: Well, he's a U.S.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Marshal.
- 9:46Speaker 7: That's who he is.
- 9:48Speaker 9: A Marshal?
- 9:49Speaker 3: Where did you get that shirt you're wearing? And the boots.
- 9:54Speaker 3: And what about this gun?
- 9:56Speaker 9: Well, you think I got it.
- 9:57Speaker 3: I don't think I know. Now, what's your name? What
- 9:50Speaker 3: kind of a name is that for a female? How
- 9:54Speaker 3: old are you?
- 9:55Speaker 6: Sixteen.
- 9:56Speaker 9: Why did you break into that store last night? Who
- 10:18Speaker 9: says I did?
- 10:19Speaker 5: The clothes you're wearing, that stepping on the bed over there,
- 10:22Speaker 5: the stuff all over this room, every bit of it
- 10:23Speaker 5: was stolen.
- 10:26Speaker 9: How'd you figure it was me, Marshal?
- 10:30Speaker 3: That perfume you took. Doc Adams was down in the
- 10:33Speaker 3: lobby when you rented your room here. He smelled it
- 10:36Speaker 3: on you.
- 10:37Speaker 4: Oh.
- 10:39Speaker 8: I just don't know that perfume is going to bring
- 10:41Speaker 8: bad luck. Then Mother seems I need it. Never had
- 10:50Speaker 8: one before. Never even smelt nice. Just heard about it.
- 10:54Speaker 3: What are you doing right away from home?
- 10:57Speaker 9: I ain't running. I'd already run.
- 11:00Speaker 2: You wish that.
- 11:01Speaker 8: Bradley was wild horses, I wouldn't go back there.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Why not?
- 11:04Speaker 9: You know my stepfather, you wouldn't ask why not.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Work.
- 11:07Speaker 7: Work a body to the death, that's all he knows.
- 11:11Speaker 8: He's got a dry farm down here. He ain't never
- 11:13Speaker 8: gonna be worth nothing no matter what.
- 11:15Speaker 9: He'll work day and night just like a man. I
- 11:20Speaker 9: never even owned a drink. I don't believe him going
- 11:23Speaker 9: in for frills.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I see.
- 11:28Speaker 9: He beats me, too.
- 11:30Speaker 8: Last time he'd done it two days ago, I just
- 11:31Speaker 8: lit out.
- 11:33Speaker 9: Look, mister. You see that bruise on the side of
- 11:37Speaker 9: my head?
- 11:39Speaker 2: Yes, we will. You make a move, Marshal, and I'll
- 11:45Speaker 2: blow this bell or that bell clean through his belly.
- 11:48Speaker 3: I'm not moving. Just take it easy.
- 11:50Speaker 9: Get back off now, mister. Away from the door.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Well, I.
- 11:53Speaker 9: I didn't run away from home just to end up
- 11:56Speaker 9: in no jail.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Where are you going to end up, bully?
- 12:00Speaker 7: Never you mind about me, Marshal. Now you two just
- 12:03Speaker 7: stay put.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Oh, I just.
- 12:10Speaker 3: I'm awful sorry, Mr. Dillon.
- 12:12Speaker 2: I didn't have no idea what she was up to.
- 12:15Speaker 3: She doesn't either, Justin. That's her trouble.
- 12:17Speaker 9: Darn fool kid.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Yeah. Darn fool kid. With a loaded gun.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Well, let's see now, Matthew. This shirt's not been worn.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Won't have to discount it, at least.
- 13:16Speaker 3: The same goes for the skeleton, huh? And the blanket, canteen, handbags.
- 13:22Speaker 3: None of these beans that you need, Mr.
- 13:25Speaker 6: McKay.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Oh, just hold your horses, you two.
- 13:28Speaker 2: I get to weigh this cheese.
- 13:30Speaker 6: Oh, well, I'm saving it for later.
- 13:32Speaker 7: A man can't calculate his profits without knowing his costs.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. Uh-huh. I knew something that was going. I think
- 13:42Speaker 2: he ate about 20 cents worth off that corner there.
- 13:44Speaker 2: 22 cents to be exact.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Well, at least she didn't have time to eat any bacon, Miles.
- 13:51Speaker 3: There you are. Yeah, it's about the size of it.
- 13:55Speaker 3: That's all we've found in her room.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Well, if it wasn't just for the low-priced items, Matthew,
- 14:00Speaker 2: she still got away with a $ 12. 50 pair of boots.
- 14:02Speaker 2: She hasn't gotten away yet, Miles.
- 14:05Speaker 3: We'll find her before the night's over.
- 14:07Speaker 7: Yeah, we know what she looks like now, at least.
- 14:09Speaker 7: And we know her name. Wade Deaver.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Hi.
- 14:12Speaker 9: A little homeless little child, you say?
- 14:15Speaker 3: Yeah. A dry farm down in Florida, let's say. In
- 14:19Speaker 3: case of too much work, I guess. And too little
- 14:23Speaker 3: of anything else.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Mighty hard living, dry farming. Doesn't pay much of anything.
- 14:29Speaker 3: To speak of. Not much.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Matthew, if you catch her and you get back those
- 14:35Speaker 2: boots and that gun and the other items, well... What
- 14:39Speaker 2: I mean is this. She can keep that perfume if
- 14:42Speaker 2: she wants it.
- 14:43Speaker 6: Well, for every moment.
- 14:45Speaker 3: I couldn't tell it anyway.
- 14:47Speaker 2: She's used some of them.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Yeah, sure, Miles. I understand.
- 14:50Speaker 2: You were tired? A girl wandering around alone?
- 14:55Speaker 7: Well, don't just stand there staring at me.
- 14:58Speaker 5: I'm not staring at you, Miles. I'm just listening to you,
- 15:01Speaker 5: that's all.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Oh, I'm smirking like a cat in a birdcage. I
- 15:05Speaker 2: told you that perfume isn't saleable, Miles. You go on
- 15:09Speaker 2: out and catch that young ruffian. You bring her to justice.
- 15:12Speaker 2: You link them honest, God-fearing folks. Violating private property.
- 15:15Speaker 3: All right, Miles. All right.
- 15:17Speaker 2: And if you get that gentleman with the boots back
- 15:21Speaker 2: and does not hurt any, then the gentleman will judge
- 15:27Speaker 2: it too. Well, I'll give that child a dress right
- 15:30Speaker 2: out of my stock. My land of graciousness. Well, it's
- 15:33Speaker 2: not a matter of sentiment, no. It's just that it
- 15:35Speaker 2: isn't fit for a young girl to go into court
- 15:37Speaker 2: just like a man. It's no decent.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Yeah, sure, sure, Miles. I know what you mean. Just
- 15:42Speaker 3: a proper respect for appearances. That's all it is, isn't it?
- 15:46Speaker 2: Oh, I'll confound the both of you. You're trying to
- 15:48Speaker 2: accuse a man of charity when he hasn't an ounce
- 15:51Speaker 2: of it in his entire nature. Well, wait a minute.
- 15:54Speaker 3: Is that Ted Reed, your fatality? Yeah, come on, Chester.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Let's find out. So help me, Marshal, I didn't know.
- 16:13Speaker 3: I didn't have the least idea. Well, it wasn't your fault, Jason. Chester,
- 16:18Speaker 3: did you send somebody to find Doc?
- 16:20Speaker 2: Yes, we did. The Dyson boy went to take the mission.
- 16:23Speaker 3: I'd load with a girl.
- 16:25Speaker 7: I'd just open the safe and then let her have
- 16:27Speaker 7: the money.
- 16:29Speaker 3: I wouldn't have shot an old girl. Not if I'd known.
- 16:32Speaker 3: It couldn't have been expected, you know, Jason.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Oh. That bandana over her face, dressed like she was.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Pointing that gun just as rock steady.
- 16:41Speaker 3: As any man I ever seen.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Yeah. And you know, I always keep my gun stuck
- 16:48Speaker 2: right between the safe and the desk.
- 16:49Speaker 3: It just kicks you something like this.
- 16:52Speaker 2: So I made like I was going to open the
- 16:54Speaker 2: safe and.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Are you sure, Marshal?
- 17:00Speaker 6: Are you sure she's dead?
- 17:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm afraid she is, isn't.
- 17:07Speaker 2: She?
- 17:07Speaker 3: Killing a girl. I've never done nothing so bad in
- 17:11Speaker 3: my whole life.
- 17:14Speaker 2: So help me, Marshal.
- 17:15Speaker 3: I didn't know. Look, anybody else would have done the
- 17:18Speaker 3: same thing. Now, it couldn't be helped. It's done, and
- 17:22Speaker 3: blaming yourself won't undo it. Now, look, why don't you
- 17:28Speaker 3: go outside a while and get some fresh air, huh?
- 17:31Speaker 3: I reckon maybe I better.
- 17:35Speaker 3: I reckon I'd just better get outside a while.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Old Jason's broke up pretty bad over there.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess most anybody would be.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Dang, poor young'un.
- 17:49Speaker 3: Well, she paid for it, Chester. Well, there's no point
- 17:55Speaker 3: leaving her there on a dirty floor. Let's lift her
- 17:58Speaker 3: up on the counter.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Let me get her shoulders.
- 18:02Speaker 7: Hey, you know, She wasn't fine.
- 18:06Speaker 2: She.
- 18:07Speaker 3: She has got a bruise on her head. I guess
- 18:10Speaker 3: you're a poet. That's bigger, all right. Poor little thing.
- 18:14Speaker 3: All right. Let's lift her.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Oh, what's that fella in her jacket look....
- 18:26Speaker 6: Is she doing.
- 18:29Speaker 2: It?
- 18:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I know. Her perfume....
