- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory, presented by Fox One Foul Territory
- 0:08Speaker 1: Networks Cubs Podcast. I'm Saudi Charma with my partner Patrick Moodey.
- 0:12Speaker 1: We are your Cubs beat writers. Over at the Athletic. Patrick,
- 0:17Speaker 1: we had our end of season press conference with Jed Hoyer.
- 0:23Speaker 1: It actually lasted pretty long. I was I looked out
- 0:28Speaker 1: quarter and saw like nearly an hour. We didn't get
- 0:31Speaker 1: to the hour mark. I think some of theo's he
- 0:35Speaker 1: was able to surpass the hour mark. And Jed is
- 0:39Speaker 1: not one who is short on words. He can the
- 0:43Speaker 1: best of them. But yeah, I guess, you know, I honestly,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I didn't feel that strongly coming away from it, like
- 0:53Speaker 1: there was some big theme or or some strong statement.
- 1:00Speaker 1: You know, there were some very obvious topics that we
- 1:04Speaker 1: were going to hit and nothing I didn't come away
- 1:06Speaker 1: with like, Okay, that was that's a headline, that's a
- 1:09Speaker 1: big that's some big news there. It just felt like
- 1:14Speaker 1: this is someone who was satisfied with the season they
- 1:18Speaker 1: had and is looking to get back to the ninety
- 1:21Speaker 1: plus win mark and and whatever it is they do
- 1:25Speaker 1: in the off season to do that, that's what it'll be.
- 1:27Speaker 1: And you know, I I'm not sure if that's the
- 1:31Speaker 1: type of that's something that gets people fired up for
- 1:35Speaker 1: the upcoming off season, But I'm not sure if that's
- 1:38Speaker 1: what this organization is. In fact, it's funny. My my
- 1:43Speaker 1: son was like, so, who are they going to spend on?
- 1:45Speaker 2: Who are they getting? Like? Who do they add?
- 1:47Speaker 1: And I'm just like, I don't know if they go
- 1:49Speaker 1: after big free agents anymore. I'm not sure if that's
- 1:52Speaker 1: what this organization does. Like this just doesn't seem like
- 1:55Speaker 1: what if they do anymore?
- 1:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean that's what I mean.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Kids grow up up dreaming about valuation systems and things
- 2:03Speaker 4: like that. Of that's how you fall in love with baseball,
- 2:07Speaker 4: right running your predictive models against industry standards and expectations
- 2:15Speaker 4: and accounting for potential injuries and lockouts and.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Things of that nature. Yeah.
- 2:24Speaker 4: I liked how in your league you described it as
- 2:26Speaker 4: the epically long theo Epstein season post mortems are a
- 2:29Speaker 4: thing of the past, because THEO would just do those
- 2:33Speaker 4: one man shows, just kind of spilling, you know, spilling
- 2:38Speaker 4: his heart out there, just you know, epically frustrated after
- 2:44Speaker 4: ninety five wins seasons, and that was the standard then
- 2:48Speaker 4: that's how the team operate. That's what seemed possible, and
- 2:52Speaker 4: things now are more like like you say, the Cups
- 2:56Speaker 4: are trying to build a team that wins around ninety
- 2:59Speaker 4: wins every game and some every year, and sometimes they'll
- 3:04Speaker 4: exceed projection, sometimes they'll hit projections, sometimes they'll fall pullout
- 3:09Speaker 4: projections like not you know, defending it as much as
- 3:15Speaker 4: try and explain it to people who may have cockpits
- 3:17Speaker 4: and pieces of that press conference and that look, the
- 3:21Speaker 4: Cubs turned a corner this year. So some of the
- 3:25Speaker 4: pointedness of previous sessions with Jed, some of the frustrations
- 3:30Speaker 4: and disappointments just weren't there. The lame duck hot seat
- 3:35Speaker 4: questions were not there because he received one before they
- 3:40Speaker 4: made the playoffs for an undetermined length, at least publicly.
- 3:45Speaker 4: They won't announce that or have not announced that, So
- 3:51Speaker 4: you take those things off the table. They're not going
- 3:54Speaker 4: to sacrifice a hitting coach or blame it on, you know,
- 3:59Speaker 4: an assist and coach somewhere in that clubhouse. And I
- 4:04Speaker 4: think we've we'll get into some of the more specific
- 4:07Speaker 4: player stuff, but we kind of have a general outline
- 4:10Speaker 4: of of what we're thinking so yeah, just a different
- 4:16Speaker 4: a different sort of session than than what we're used to.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Yeah, you're you're right, there's often the THEO years. Uh
- 4:26Speaker 1: it was always so quotable, right, we still bring up
- 4:29Speaker 1: somewhere along the way the offense broke. That's you know,
- 4:34Speaker 1: that's a classic line. And and I mean, uh, Chad
- 4:38Speaker 1: has his you know, quotables as well, you know, the
- 4:41Speaker 1: next great Cubs team and uh uh what what's intelligence spending? Yeah,
- 4:48Speaker 1: so that none of that was there, and and I
- 4:51Speaker 1: think you're right, you know, part of it is, you know,
- 4:53Speaker 1: he's not laying duck. There's nothing to push him on. Uh,
- 4:58Speaker 1: it wasn't a like this. It wasn't a disaster exit
- 5:03Speaker 1: from the playoffs. You know, maybe if they'd gotten swept
- 5:07Speaker 1: by the Brewers, they'd be more pressing about like, you're
- 5:10Speaker 1: not close to that team at least that would be
- 5:13Speaker 1: the narrative, right, and they would be easy to push
- 5:16Speaker 1: them on that. Like they took them to five games
- 5:18Speaker 1: and that team won ninety seven, the Cubs one ninety two.
- 5:20Speaker 1: It's like, I mean, they should be better. They should
- 5:24Speaker 1: they have the higher payroll.
- 5:25Speaker 2: In theory, they.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Should be able to beat up on them. But the
- 5:29Speaker 1: Brewers really are a well oiled machine, and that's what
- 5:32Speaker 1: the Cubs are aiming to get to. And I think
- 5:34Speaker 1: that's why sometimes it leads to some of these not
- 5:37Speaker 1: too interesting things like everything that you said right there
- 5:40Speaker 1: about like it's about like valuation, it's about like, you know,
- 5:43Speaker 1: the model, what does a model say and model do?
- 5:46Speaker 1: Maybe it leads to these more boring press conferences because
- 5:49Speaker 1: the Cubs are just going to go buy the books
- 5:52Speaker 1: or sort of say, like buy what they're what their
- 5:56Speaker 1: models say, and it's like it's as simple as that.
- 5:58Speaker 2: We don't need to overthink this.
- 6:00Speaker 1: One of the big decisions that they have coming up,
- 6:05Speaker 1: it's going to be a SHOWO in Minaga and his
- 6:08Speaker 1: his three year option. Let's put show to in Monaga
- 6:11Speaker 1: under the DraftKings spots DraftKings player spotlight.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Patrick. This is this isn't the simplest of contracts.
- 6:24Speaker 1: To figure out the exact numbers, I believe they have
- 6:28Speaker 1: an option for a three year deal. Is it fifty
- 6:32Speaker 1: point seven or is it fifty four? What's the number?
- 6:37Speaker 4: Fifty seven point seven five million total for the twenty six,
- 6:42Speaker 4: twenty seven and twenty eight seasons.
- 6:44Speaker 3: That is a club.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Option club option, and then he has an option for
- 6:50Speaker 1: about fifteen for twenty six if they turn.
- 6:55Speaker 3: It down, they turn it down, and that.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Or he can opt out out and become a free agent.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Yes, and I would say that there's almost no chance
- 7:07Speaker 4: that Shoto would pick up an option for fifteen point
- 7:11Speaker 4: twenty five million for next season. In that scenario, he
- 7:16Speaker 4: would turn it down. The Cubs could then attach a
- 7:19Speaker 4: qualifying offer to his free agency. I believe this off
- 7:24Speaker 4: season's number is slightly more than twenty two million, and
- 7:29Speaker 4: their Shodo would have a decision to make. Do you
- 7:33Speaker 4: kind of take that qualifying offer and hope you can
- 7:38Speaker 4: approximate a cy Young caliber ORed caliber season the way
- 7:44Speaker 4: he did as a rookie. It's not unreasonable or Another
- 7:49Speaker 4: layer to this, he had two club options essentially, was
- 7:56Speaker 4: what he would be turning down this scenario. That is
- 7:58Speaker 4: worth thirty point five million over two years. So his
- 8:02Speaker 4: camp would have to say, like, can we beat two
- 8:06Speaker 4: and thirty plus, whether it's you know, really high aav
- 8:11Speaker 4: whether it's going longer for some security into the future.
- 8:17Speaker 4: There's another snare there if he picks one up and
- 8:22Speaker 4: the Cubs will have a two year option. That one
- 8:23Speaker 4: is so remote. I'm not even going to get into it,
- 8:25Speaker 4: because really, what it comes down to the Cubs are
- 8:27Speaker 4: they willing to do the three years this off season
- 8:33Speaker 4: and then from there it will almost certainly be the
- 8:38Speaker 4: qualifying offer decision. And now, if you were a special
- 8:43Speaker 4: assistant in that front office, the lot of how would
- 8:45Speaker 4: you be looking at it right now?
- 8:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's interesting like that this was a
- 8:50Speaker 1: slam dunk three months ago. We weren't This wasn't something
- 8:54Speaker 1: we'd have to debate. You you pick up that deal.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I've been going back and forth on this. That ending
- 9:03Speaker 1: was really rough, and he hasn't been kind of I guess,
- 9:08Speaker 1: punched in the face like this by the league where
- 9:11Speaker 1: he's had an extended run of like this guy's struggling.
- 9:17Speaker 1: I think that these are the questions I think they
- 9:19Speaker 1: have to answer. The stuff was down like a mile
- 9:22Speaker 1: per hour, a tick down on the season, mostly from
- 9:27Speaker 1: what I saw, it was post injury. How much of
- 9:31Speaker 1: that was because of the injury, how much of that
- 9:34Speaker 1: was He just needs an off season and it'll all
- 9:37Speaker 1: be back. And I don't think he's someone with a
- 9:41Speaker 1: long history of injuries in Japan's That's the one thing
- 9:48Speaker 1: I'd be wondering. Another thing you'd have to consider he
- 9:52Speaker 1: is you know, it was his age thirty one season.
- 9:55Speaker 1: He just turned thirty two in September, So you'd be
- 10:00Speaker 1: paying for if you pick that up age thirty two,
- 10:02Speaker 1: age thirty three, age thirty four season for picture.
- 10:06Speaker 2: You know that.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Okay, So is that Velo drop a trend? Is that
- 10:10Speaker 1: Velo drop a blip at age thirty two, thirty three,
- 10:14Speaker 1: thirty four. That's a legitimate question, and you have to
- 10:19Speaker 1: that's it's really hard to answer that.
- 10:21Speaker 2: I do think he's.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Someone that in theory ages well because he should. He
- 10:26Speaker 1: doesn't walk guys, he has command, he's a veteran, he
- 10:29Speaker 1: knows how to pitch all that stuff that you talk
- 10:31Speaker 1: about with guys like him. I just don't think it's
- 10:34Speaker 1: an easy decision anymore. I do think, like if I'm
- 10:39Speaker 1: thinking like the Cubs, it certainly isn't an easy decision
- 10:43Speaker 1: because every dollar counts now.
- 10:45Speaker 2: They they the way they look at their.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Payroll is you know, essentially, I guess it's as simple
- 10:52Speaker 1: as this is his what's his value on the open
- 10:56Speaker 1: market is one thing they look at, and then can
- 11:01Speaker 1: he outproduce that value? Can he is he like, let's
- 11:05Speaker 1: just call it twenty million a year. Can he produce
- 11:09Speaker 1: twenty million plus value a year?
- 11:12Speaker 2: Right? Whatever?
- 11:13Speaker 1: War that equals out to? And my guess is it'd
- 11:17Speaker 1: be very close. And you know, I've talked myself into
- 11:23Speaker 1: both camps of like, no, they're not going to do
- 11:26Speaker 1: it to and now as I talk this out and
- 11:30Speaker 1: just the idea of like losing pitching depth and if
- 11:34Speaker 1: you trust that, Okay, he's probably somewhere in between what
- 11:37Speaker 1: he was in twenty four and twenty five. I mean
- 11:40Speaker 1: that's a three Like what did you pay Jamison Tye own?
- 11:44Speaker 1: He's getting eighteen a year.
- 11:47Speaker 4: I think it's that, right, was it four and sixty
- 11:50Speaker 4: eight or four and seventy two.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Something like that?
- 11:54Speaker 1: Okay, So yeah, that's I mean, so you know prices
- 11:59Speaker 1: have gone up obviously. Yeah, that's seventeen AAV for.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Four and sixty eight.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Is yeah, yeah, so.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Yeah, you're paying a little bit more for Shadow of
- 12:17Speaker 1: Managa per year. I think it's a it's a worthwhile debate,
- 12:22Speaker 1: and I'm curious to see how it plays out. I
- 12:25Speaker 1: don't think it's a slam dunk anymore. And I am
- 12:27Speaker 1: really surprised that we got to this point.
- 12:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I I personally think you bet on.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Shoda.
- 12:40Speaker 4: I think the cost of pitching just keeps going up
- 12:43Speaker 4: and up and up. You know what you're going to
- 12:49Speaker 4: get with Shoda in terms of his competitiveness, his work ethic,
- 12:55Speaker 4: his ability to pitch.
- 12:58Speaker 3: At Wrigley Field, and.
- 13:02Speaker 4: I think sometimes you fall into these traps of like
- 13:05Speaker 4: the stuff darlings of like, oh my god, what if
- 13:08Speaker 4: we get him in here and you wind up with
- 13:11Speaker 4: Tyler Chatwood, Like you always need more pitching. H This
- 13:16Speaker 4: is kind of Jed Hoyer's fundamental belief of you can
- 13:20Speaker 4: never have enough of it. I mean, unless like do
- 13:24Speaker 4: the copsting showed him in AGA's just like done, Like
- 13:29Speaker 4: is one. A couple of bad starts towards the end
- 13:31Speaker 4: of the year make you say, like enough, because he
- 13:36Speaker 4: looked pretty good against against the Padres, Like you shouldn't
- 13:40Speaker 4: have been pitching to Manny Machado in the middle of
- 13:43Speaker 4: the game there with first base open, Like coming off
- 13:47Speaker 4: that start, I think you feel pretty good. I mean really,
- 13:50Speaker 4: like Labor Day weekend, Choto still had a really strong season.
- 13:54Speaker 4: I think he still put up like one point five
- 13:56Speaker 4: war according to Baseball Reference.
- 13:58Speaker 3: I Still.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Having said all that, we know how the Cubs operate, Like,
- 14:04Speaker 4: I don't think they're going to be like, oh wow,
- 14:06Speaker 4: you know, like they're going to talk themselves into, oh
- 14:10Speaker 4: what if we get this guy in our pitching infrastructure. All,
- 14:12Speaker 4: let's get him in the pitch labine, oh, pitching at
- 14:15Speaker 4: Wrigley Field and the defense behind him. Like they are
- 14:19Speaker 4: so bottom line obsessed that yeah. I mean, if they
- 14:26Speaker 4: think show Doa is worth you know, say, fifty three million,
- 14:32Speaker 4: are are they going to pay him fifty seven plus?
- 14:34Speaker 4: I don't know like they and I do think the
- 14:37Speaker 4: CBA expiring after twenty twenty six is something where they
- 14:43Speaker 4: are just hesitant to commit dollars of future.
- 14:46Speaker 3: I mean, I'm.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Assuming they'll be baseball played at Wrigley Field at some
- 14:50Speaker 4: point after twenty twenty six.
- 14:51Speaker 3: I don't know when it'll be in twenty twenty seven.
- 14:54Speaker 4: I would hope at some point it comes back that year,
- 14:58Speaker 4: But they do want to know kind of the rule
- 15:00Speaker 4: of engagement and the parameters are going to have to
- 15:04Speaker 4: work with them. So, I mean, showed up kind of
- 15:08Speaker 4: picked a bad time to have a rough stretch. But
- 15:14Speaker 4: I also think it's hard for me to like listen
- 15:18Speaker 4: to the Cubs talk about Shoulder really all the way
- 15:20Speaker 4: up through the end of August and rave about his
- 15:23Speaker 4: clear eyed competitiveness and his pitch ability and his baseball
- 15:29Speaker 4: IQ and then just be like, well that September and
- 15:34Speaker 4: October didn't go great, Like you just flush that.
- 15:38Speaker 3: I don't know. It's a tough decision.
- 15:42Speaker 1: No, And from my understanding, he is very comfortable and
- 15:46Speaker 1: gets along with Tommy Hotteby and Casey Jacobson. They help
- 15:50Speaker 1: him a lot. I think they have a really good
- 15:52Speaker 1: working relationship. Yeah, it is disappointing that, you know, it
- 16:01Speaker 1: could end like this in such a you know, like
- 16:04Speaker 1: it seemed like such a great marriage and everything, and
- 16:07Speaker 1: now there's a question of whether just a couple months
- 16:11Speaker 1: of I mean, you know, literally a couple months of
- 16:13Speaker 1: poor play could lead to him becoming a free agent
- 16:18Speaker 1: and signing elsewhere. It's kind of shocking when you consider where,
- 16:23Speaker 1: like how important he was when he got hurt, and
- 16:27Speaker 1: how it felt like how do they move on with
- 16:29Speaker 1: how showed him anaga They were able to kind of
- 16:32Speaker 1: you know, hoole steady at the time, but he was
- 16:34Speaker 1: such a huge piece when he returned, it felt like
- 16:37Speaker 1: such a huge part of the puzzle, so him possibly
- 16:42Speaker 1: not coming back would be a pretty big surprise.
- 16:45Speaker 2: But suddenly it seems very realistic.
- 16:48Speaker 1: All right, let's throw it to producer Jeremany for a
- 16:51Speaker 1: North Side Territory pick.
- 16:52Speaker 5: Thanks aht of my North Side Territory producer pick. It's
- 16:56Speaker 5: hard to see the Brewers fighting back in the NLC. Yes,

- 18:11Speaker 1: Welcome back to Northside Territory presented by Fox one. I
- 18:15Speaker 1: mean they either way, I think they need pitching, whether
- 18:18Speaker 1: shouldem and Aga comes back or not. I think pitching
- 18:22Speaker 1: needs to be a priority. And I'm not just talking
- 18:25Speaker 1: about the starters. A bullpen is going to be depleted.
- 18:28Speaker 1: We don't know who's coming back. You know, I'd be
- 18:32Speaker 1: very surprised if Caleb thielbar Drew promarant or Andrew Kittridge
- 18:36Speaker 1: are back and Brad Keller. You know, that just seems
- 18:42Speaker 1: like a situation where if if he wants to take
- 18:46Speaker 1: a little less than what the open market is going
- 18:49Speaker 1: to give him, maybe they could find a deal. But
- 18:52Speaker 1: this isn't a guy with a small agency. I'm pretty
- 18:55Speaker 1: sure he's excel right. They're not going to tell him
- 18:59Speaker 1: to take that small deal to stay with the Cubs.
- 19:04Speaker 1: In my you know, in my estimation, he does like
- 19:08Speaker 1: playing in Chicago. I think he very He's very comfortable
- 19:11Speaker 1: there and had a great time both like with everyone
- 19:15Speaker 1: around him in the clubhouse and the fan base and
- 19:18Speaker 1: playing at Wrigley and all that stuff. It's just it's
- 19:21Speaker 1: just one of those things that are in light that's
- 19:23Speaker 1: unlikely to happen, and it's not the way the Cubs
- 19:26Speaker 1: really do things with relievers. So we'll see, maybe maybe
- 19:30Speaker 1: there's a maybe there's a pathway for that to happen.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing is the Cubs. You know,
- 19:37Speaker 1: Jed didn't I asked him about the need for strikeouts.
- 19:41Speaker 1: You know, he complimented the defense and then in the
- 19:45Speaker 1: end he said, but you know you always want He's like,
- 19:48Speaker 1: the best way to limit damage is to make sure
- 19:50Speaker 1: the ball's not in play. This is a rotation that
- 19:54Speaker 1: doesn't strike out a lot of guys. The bullpends started
- 19:56Speaker 1: to strike out a lot of guys, especially in the
- 19:58Speaker 1: second half. They do a good They did a good
- 20:00Speaker 1: job of that. You know that's gonna have to be rebuilt.
- 20:03Speaker 1: But rotation wise, you know, that was a that was
- 20:09Speaker 1: rough for them. Now adding Justin Steele and a better,
- 20:15Speaker 1: more experienced cade Horton, maybe that ups the strikeouts. I
- 20:20Speaker 1: mean it should, in theory up the strikeouts. Maybe a
- 20:24Speaker 1: full season of Jamison Tyn using that kick change takes
- 20:29Speaker 1: it up a little bit. I still think they need
- 20:32Speaker 1: to go out there and get someone. I don't know
- 20:35Speaker 1: how they pull it off. Probably would have to be
- 20:38Speaker 1: via trade because they don't spend for because strikeouts are
- 20:43Speaker 1: expensive and I just don't see them paying drop dollar.
- 20:46Speaker 3: That's the thing was showed up.
- 20:48Speaker 4: I think he made a good point a couple episodes
- 20:51Speaker 4: ago of Remember the Trade Deadline?
- 20:54Speaker 3: The year prior of Oh are the Cubs going to trade?
- 20:58Speaker 3: Jamison tye On. Oh they should, Oh what can they get?
- 21:01Speaker 4: Well, if you do that, you're gonna go have to
- 21:03Speaker 4: go out and find another Jamison tie On. And to me,
- 21:08Speaker 4: that's kind of where some of the show to stuff lies, Like, yeah,
- 21:10Speaker 4: of course you like more swing and miss and more
- 21:15Speaker 4: v low and maybe some untapped upside or potential, but
- 21:24Speaker 4: you still need guys to get through the one hundred
- 21:27Speaker 4: and sixty two game season. And if you don't want
- 21:31Speaker 4: to spend at the top of the free agent market
- 21:35Speaker 4: and sign a Corbyn Burns, and when it comes down
- 21:38Speaker 4: to the trade deadline, you don't want to trade any
- 21:41Speaker 4: of your you know, top prospects. Like where are you
- 21:46Speaker 4: going to get these pictures? You don't really develop them
- 21:49Speaker 4: internally through the draft. Obviously Kate Horton and Justin Steele
- 21:54Speaker 4: are exceptions, but you know, Horton was I think their
- 21:59Speaker 4: highest drafted picture since Mark Pryor. That was kind of
- 22:03Speaker 4: you You don't expect them to be drafting that high
- 22:07Speaker 4: again for a while, and I was Justin Steele took
- 22:10Speaker 4: a long time, and both these guys were talking about
- 22:12Speaker 4: were hurt at the most important time.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Of the year.
- 22:15Speaker 4: So I still I still think of Shoda as kind
- 22:20Speaker 4: of a toss up the you know, if you look
- 22:23Speaker 4: at the front office having two different sides of you know,
- 22:26Speaker 4: the left and right side of the brain, whatever, whatever,
- 22:28Speaker 4: the analogy is there, Like part of them I'm sure
- 22:32Speaker 4: is understands all that, and I think the other part
- 22:35Speaker 4: is just gonna be like, well, what is how can
- 22:38Speaker 4: we find maximum efficiency in this transaction?
- 22:41Speaker 3: And that's where they're gonna land.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so.
- 22:48Speaker 1: It's it gets boring to have to defer to that,
- 22:51Speaker 1: but that's kind of the mentality of this front office.
- 22:57Speaker 1: You know, there's there's big strikeout guys. I mean, Dylan
- 23:00Speaker 1: Cees is available. I think I do think this. You know,
- 23:05Speaker 1: I don't like to take too much away from the playoffs.
- 23:08Speaker 1: I think Jed said that talking about the playoffs, don't
- 23:11Speaker 1: you know, don't overthink an eight game sample size.
- 23:14Speaker 2: He was talking about the offense.
- 23:15Speaker 1: But I think when I watched the playoffs, yes, they're
- 23:20Speaker 1: they you know, coming off a game last night where
- 23:23Speaker 1: there were I think seventeen runs combined and scored. This
- 23:26Speaker 1: maybe this doesn't hold true just based off that, but
- 23:31Speaker 1: I think strikeouts are really important in the postseason. Swing
- 23:34Speaker 1: and miss stuff are really important. It's really important in
- 23:38Speaker 1: the playoffs. You know, it doesn't it can come out
- 23:42Speaker 1: of the bullpen, but it's nice to have.
- 23:43Speaker 2: A guy that can give you even if even if.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Dylan Cees is giving you three four innings in the postseason,
- 23:49Speaker 1: that's really valuable. What Jacob Mizarowski did was really valuable.
- 23:54Speaker 1: That's why it would have been nice if the Cubs
- 23:57Speaker 1: had advanced. It would have been nice for them to
- 23:59Speaker 1: even get a innings here and there from Kate Horton
- 24:01Speaker 1: because he does have swing and miss stuff.
- 24:04Speaker 2: He does he has the ability to strike guys out.
- 24:07Speaker 1: If you look at his overall numbers, they weren't great
- 24:09Speaker 1: in strikeout numbers, but go look at like the last
- 24:11Speaker 1: ten starts he started to figure it out. He rarely
- 24:14Speaker 1: was learning how to maximize his stuff. I think it
- 24:18Speaker 1: changes the dynamic of things, and I think you in
- 24:21Speaker 1: the postseason you just need to throw everything at the opposition,
- 24:25Speaker 1: especially in those earlier rounds. We'll see how the playoffs
- 24:30Speaker 1: play out the rest of the way, but I just
- 24:32Speaker 1: think getting swing and miss stuff it would be really important.
- 24:37Speaker 1: And you know, I do agree that I think depth
- 24:41Speaker 1: and everything is important, which is why I wonder if.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Moving on from from.
- 24:47Speaker 1: SHOWDA would be a big mistake, you'd look back on it.
- 24:53Speaker 1: That just means, then do you need to so in
- 24:56Speaker 1: theory starts this season, it would be sorry, they're they're
- 25:00Speaker 1: they get excited. Yeah, you know without him, it's tie On,
- 25:05Speaker 1: Cad Horton, Who am I missing? Who's the obvious Matthew
- 25:11Speaker 1: Boyd Yes, So that those three to start the season
- 25:13Speaker 1: with Justin Steele, you know, I'm sure he wants to
- 25:17Speaker 1: be there for opening day, but that's probably a long shot.
- 25:20Speaker 1: So that leaves you with two spots to fill. You know,
- 25:25Speaker 1: you could say it's Javy or Asad. You could say
- 25:27Speaker 1: you want to try Ben Brown again. But I don't
- 25:29Speaker 1: think anybody wants to feel like they're they should be depth.
- 25:34Speaker 1: You're you're aiming for ninety plus wins every year, that's
- 25:37Speaker 1: the goal. So so they need to find ways to
- 25:41Speaker 1: kind of they need more and more pitching, and I
- 25:44Speaker 1: think this year proved that they were down multiple guys
- 25:49Speaker 1: at different points of the season, lost a huge piece
- 25:53Speaker 1: going into the playoffs.
- 25:55Speaker 2: So it's always there's never there's no such thing as
- 25:58Speaker 2: having too much pitching.
- 25:59Speaker 1: I guess starting pitch so so maybe maybe in the
- 26:02Speaker 1: end that that makes the show the decision we were
- 26:05Speaker 1: talking about before a little easier, and maybe that's the
- 26:07Speaker 1: philosophy they should lean on and not overthink it.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Uh, I don't know. All right, all of.

- 26:40Speaker 1: They that was, you know, an offensive juggernaut last night.
- 26:45Speaker 2: If you if anyone caught that game.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Uh, it's been a lot of good pitching and Seattle
- 26:51Speaker 1: I thought was going to kind of carry their way
- 26:54Speaker 1: into the into the World Series based off pitching. And
- 26:57Speaker 1: George Kirby gave up eight runs in four innings all
- 27:01Speaker 1: on Fox for the ALCS. I thought that was an
- 27:06Speaker 1: impressive bounce back by Toronto. And here's something for the
- 27:09Speaker 1: Cubs fans to.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Get irritated by.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Shane Bieber pitched six innings, gave up He bounced back
- 27:17Speaker 1: really nicely from a first inning home run he gave
- 27:20Speaker 1: up to Julio Rodriguez. I believe eight strikeouts. We were
- 27:24Speaker 1: just talking about strikeouts. He pitched really well. Playoff you
- 27:30Speaker 1: know former Cy Young he won the Cy Young right,
- 27:33Speaker 1: I have that right, former Cy Young Award winner. Yeah,
- 27:37Speaker 1: so playoff experience, you know, you would have loved to
- 27:42Speaker 1: We know that the Cubs were attached to him. There
- 27:46Speaker 1: he is performing in the postseason. Pretty impressive stuff from
- 27:52Speaker 1: Shane Bieber the daily schedule, like make sure to catch

- 28:55Speaker 1: Kyle Tucker decision, that's a you had and what we
- 29:02Speaker 1: had the we had the daily Kyle Tucker injury update
- 29:06Speaker 1: during the season. I'm not sure if we're going to
- 29:09Speaker 1: have a daily off season free agency update.
- 29:13Speaker 2: For Kyle Tucker.
- 29:16Speaker 1: You talked about this earlier, but Jed Jed's answer there
- 29:21Speaker 1: was a lot of like valuation and things like that,
- 29:24Speaker 1: words that I don't think fans like are going to
- 29:28Speaker 1: fire up fans for the possibility of him getting a
- 29:31Speaker 1: long term deal. I don't know if it'd be the
- 29:33Speaker 1: right move anyways, but certainly, you know, did the Cubs
- 29:39Speaker 1: even know what he wants? What type of deal would
- 29:42Speaker 1: he be looking at? Are they going to be aggressive?
- 29:46Speaker 1: Like I didn't come away feeling like any of that
- 29:50Speaker 1: was really you know, clear, whether they know what he wants.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Certainly didn't get a feeling like this is their number
- 29:57Speaker 1: one priority and that they're going to be super great it.
- 30:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:02Speaker 4: I know some people may watch those press conferences from
- 30:06Speaker 4: home and be like, oh, he didn't say anything, or
- 30:08Speaker 4: you know, what's the point of this, Like it's if
- 30:13Speaker 4: you ask the right question, it almost doesn't matter what
- 30:16Speaker 4: they say.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Like it's revealing when.
- 30:22Speaker 4: Jed says they're gonna play their cards pretty close to
- 30:25Speaker 4: the vest after having an entire year theoretically where the
- 30:30Speaker 4: Cubs had an exclusive negotiating window where they would gain
- 30:34Speaker 4: all this inside information on what makes Kyle Tucker tick
- 30:38Speaker 4: and what he could bring to the team on a
- 30:41Speaker 4: daily basis. And I don't think the Cubs are out
- 30:46Speaker 4: on Kyle Tucker. In fact, I think they're going to
- 30:50Speaker 4: just kind of, you know, to use one of Jed's
- 30:52Speaker 4: like other sports analogies, kind of hang around the basket
- 30:55Speaker 4: and maybe see what happens and maybe they get a
- 30:59Speaker 4: put back. Like that seems to be their strategy in
- 31:02Speaker 4: general with free agents, and I don't think they're making
- 31:04Speaker 4: Kyle Tucker an exception. So when we can't judge everything
- 31:12Speaker 4: on a SoundBite while the cameras are rolling, but we
- 31:15Speaker 4: can take everything we've observed from the moment they traded
- 31:18Speaker 4: for him. We can take the years of data on
- 31:23Speaker 4: this franchise and how they operate and how they go
- 31:28Speaker 4: about pursuing free agents, and you can already see some
- 31:36Speaker 4: of these other scenarios starting to present themselves. And maybe
- 31:42Speaker 4: they're not all realistic, like they don't always materialize, but
- 31:47Speaker 4: just looking at the athletic like Kyle Tucker name just
- 31:50Speaker 4: keeps popping up whether it's the Rays with new ownership
- 31:55Speaker 4: in Tucker's hometown of Tampa, maybe they want to make
- 31:59Speaker 4: a splash. The Phillies ye an owner who's just like,
- 32:07Speaker 4: you know, the opposite of Tom Ricketts in terms of
- 32:10Speaker 4: just like he's involved, he wants to make big changes.
- 32:15Speaker 4: He spends huge money without seemingly.
- 32:19Speaker 3: A care in the world.
- 32:20Speaker 4: And he has a president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski,
- 32:24Speaker 4: who loves doing those big time mega deals. So probably
- 32:29Speaker 4: can't dismiss Philadelphia. I don't know if Kyle Tucker is
- 32:34Speaker 4: a New York guy or not, but they train in Tampa,
- 32:37Speaker 4: and his swing is would probably be perfect for Yankee Stadium.
- 32:43Speaker 3: And so just.
- 32:46Speaker 4: Look, Kyle Tucker shrugs and says, we'll see what happens,
- 32:48Speaker 4: wishes his teammates the best of luck.
- 32:50Speaker 3: Like I don't think.
- 32:51Speaker 4: That's like the entire story, but it's not nothing either.
- 32:55Speaker 3: And then when Jed.
- 32:59Speaker 4: Talks about Kyle Tucker in this way of like he's
- 33:02Speaker 4: learned the right to be a coveted free agent, and
- 33:06Speaker 4: you see how the second half unfolded. I think there
- 33:09Speaker 4: are questions about you would you invest in him over
- 33:16Speaker 4: the next decade for the entire decade and it comes
- 33:20Speaker 4: are already predisposed to say no to those types of
- 33:22Speaker 4: deals anyways.
- 33:23Speaker 3: So yeah, and I think you know it ended, it
- 33:28Speaker 3: did not end well.
- 33:29Speaker 4: So people may start to sort of, you know, downplay
- 33:32Speaker 4: what Kyle Tucker's don in his career. He's an awesome hitter, period,
- 33:36Speaker 4: Like his numbers are excellent over the course of his career.
- 33:42Speaker 4: A first round pick, a top prospect, a guy who's
- 33:45Speaker 4: played in the playoffs. Is it every year of his
- 33:48Speaker 4: major league career? I think, like you add all that up,
- 33:55Speaker 4: left handed hitter. You know, his defense didn't blow us
- 33:59Speaker 4: away in right field, but he's won a Gold Glove
- 34:01Speaker 4: and you know he's more than capable out there, plus
- 34:05Speaker 4: base runner, Like some team is going to make a
- 34:09Speaker 4: massive investment in that. I just don't see it, like, oh,
- 34:12Speaker 4: you know, a one year deal or a three year
- 34:14Speaker 4: deal with opt outs, Like I just don't see that
- 34:17Speaker 4: happening period. And that seems like kind of the way
- 34:21Speaker 4: if it falls back to the Cubs, maybe, but I
- 34:24Speaker 4: just have a hard time envisioning him not having enough interest,
- 34:28Speaker 4: widespread interest, to spark the bidding war that gets to
- 34:31Speaker 4: it to a place where maybe it is around the
- 34:35Speaker 4: Winter meetings, and the Cubs are not a team that
- 34:38Speaker 4: do winter meetings, mega deals to have the entire you know,
- 34:42Speaker 4: hotel ballroom watching.
- 34:45Speaker 3: H Maybe if this.
- 34:47Speaker 4: Drag towards Cubs Convention and we start getting those questions,
- 34:50Speaker 4: or if spring training opens and he's lingering out there,
- 34:53Speaker 4: that is probably more of the scenario where I think
- 34:56Speaker 4: the Cubs get back in the mix more firmly, but
- 34:59Speaker 4: until proven otherwise say, they seem like they're gonna position
- 35:04Speaker 4: themselves on the outskirts of this.
- 35:06Speaker 1: I mean, look, I understand it didn't end how fans
- 35:10Speaker 1: wanted it to, and there's some there's a bad taste
- 35:14Speaker 1: left in some mouths. Four point five war according to
- 35:18Speaker 1: fan refs, that's right up there with every other season
- 35:20Speaker 1: pretty much.
- 35:21Speaker 2: I mean, he was at.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Four point nine, four point nine, four point nine, four
- 35:24Speaker 1: point two, four point five pretty much the same season.
- 35:28Speaker 2: Those are negligible differences.
- 35:29Speaker 1: One thirty six way to run strade a plus pretty
- 35:31Speaker 1: much right around where he always is.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Last season was.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Just like seventy eight insane games and he had a
- 35:36Speaker 1: one seventy nine way to run scraat a plus. That's
- 35:39Speaker 1: kind of what he did for like half the season
- 35:41Speaker 1: this year and then you know, the second half wasn't
- 35:44Speaker 1: as good. I just don't see a situation where he
- 35:49Speaker 1: is like fighting for like this one like three year
- 35:55Speaker 1: deal with opt outs.
- 35:56Speaker 2: I think he's going to get paid. I don't think
- 35:59Speaker 2: the Cubs do that. I think.
- 36:02Speaker 1: What we've learned, what I've learned over the last few
- 36:06Speaker 1: off seasons is like, I guess the Cubs were interested
- 36:11Speaker 1: in Shoheo Tani, but outside of the greatest player to
- 36:15Speaker 1: ever play, Like, are they even going to be interested
- 36:19Speaker 1: in these huge long term deals? Like what are the
- 36:22Speaker 1: types of players that are available that will interest them?
- 36:27Speaker 1: And and you know, especially the way is front office
- 36:31Speaker 1: thinks now, the way they behave, I just like.
- 36:36Speaker 2: We almost have to assume they're not in.
- 36:39Speaker 1: On these guys that are going to get six plus
- 36:42Speaker 1: years at thirty plus a year until proven otherwise. Yes,
- 36:49Speaker 1: they signed Dansby Swanson, but that was three years ago.
- 36:55Speaker 1: Now that was three years ago. They don't sign those
- 36:59Speaker 1: types of anymore. It's the middle of the market and
- 37:02Speaker 1: below that's I think that's kind of what we have
- 37:06Speaker 1: to look forward, like where we have to set our
- 37:09Speaker 1: expectations until they prove us wrong. I don't think they're
- 37:13Speaker 1: going to look to keep doing trades like they did
- 37:16Speaker 1: for Kyle Tucker. I just don't think that that's the
- 37:19Speaker 1: mindset either. I think there are some in the front
- 37:22Speaker 1: office that look at that and say, like, look at
- 37:26Speaker 1: what we gave up. You know that's not you know,
- 37:30Speaker 1: the model hates that deal. That was an automatic turn
- 37:35Speaker 1: down if you look at the model. So I don't
- 37:41Speaker 1: know what direction this like. I know they want to win.
- 37:45Speaker 1: I know they believe that they have created some a
- 37:49Speaker 1: team that can win regularly. I think not having I
- 37:52Speaker 1: really do wonder what not having Kyle Tucker how easy
- 37:55Speaker 1: it is to replace that production. Now, the argument would
- 38:00Speaker 1: be like, you don't replace it exactly. You you know,
- 38:03Speaker 1: you spread it around, You get the you know, wins
- 38:06Speaker 1: in different areas. Maybe you upgrade the pitching, maybe you
- 38:11Speaker 1: get a couple guys on offense that can help out
- 38:15Speaker 1: position player wise. You know, is Alex Bregman a possibility?
- 38:20Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 38:20Speaker 1: I like right now, I go into this thinking no,
- 38:24Speaker 1: I just like, you know, they'll they'll show interest and
- 38:28Speaker 1: things like that and different players, but like, unless they
- 38:30Speaker 1: fall to them, it just doesn't seem like they're going
- 38:33Speaker 1: to set the market on these free agents again or
- 38:36Speaker 1: I shouldn't say ever.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Again.
- 38:39Speaker 1: From what we understand and the way I observe what
- 38:41Speaker 1: they do, I don't see them doing that. There are
- 38:45Speaker 1: people they will identify, like Matthew Boyd, and maybe we
- 38:49Speaker 1: should go through the free agent list and kind of
- 38:51Speaker 1: think of who's undervalued or who can they get on
- 38:54Speaker 1: a two year deal, who can they get on a
- 38:56Speaker 1: three year deal? But these six plus year deals just
- 38:59Speaker 1: doesn't seem like that their business much anymore. It's the rarity.
- 39:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I totally agree with what you're saying. The only
- 39:09Speaker 4: thing I would say to our listeners is that Jed
- 39:14Speaker 4: says he has not been given a budget number for
- 39:17Speaker 4: next year. He hasn't spoken with ownership and business operations
- 39:20Speaker 4: yet and dug in on that we'll see too, like
- 39:27Speaker 4: what emerges out of this new CBA whenever that's enacted.
- 39:33Speaker 4: Like I I do get what they're saying to an
- 39:37Speaker 4: extent of like you want to know the rules for
- 39:41Speaker 4: how you're gonna have to build the roster Like that
- 39:43Speaker 4: makes sense, And a lot of these deals don't are
- 39:47Speaker 4: going to look bad, like I think, Like did anyone
- 39:52Speaker 4: think Xander Bogart's deal is good at you know, like
- 39:54Speaker 4: paying guys to like they're forty. Like I think people
- 39:57Speaker 4: can reasonably understand where they're coming from.
- 40:01Speaker 2: That.
- 40:02Speaker 4: It's just frustrating from a fans perspective though, of like, Okay,
- 40:06Speaker 4: well then your payroll every year should be super high
- 40:10Speaker 4: and allowing you to like be in the market for
- 40:12Speaker 4: all of all of this stuff, And it just seems
- 40:16Speaker 4: like they have closed off.
- 40:20Speaker 3: Certain avenues.
- 40:22Speaker 4: And I think you're right in that they'll probably want
- 40:26Speaker 4: to see what they have in Casey and Bias steros
- 40:30Speaker 4: and like you let Tucker walk and you reinvest elsewhere.
- 40:36Speaker 4: That could be a way to get you back to
- 40:39Speaker 4: around ninety wins. That's not impossible, but I do think
- 40:43Speaker 4: there's going to be stretches next year if that happens,
- 40:45Speaker 4: where you're like, where's the star power, where's the guy?
- 40:49Speaker 4: You know, like if Pete isn't playing out of his
- 40:52Speaker 4: mind for like two months, and if Saya goes into
- 40:57Speaker 4: one of his sort of like two months slumbers, uh,
- 41:02Speaker 4: and maybe Carson Kelly doesn't produce the.
- 41:04Speaker 3: Way he did.
- 41:05Speaker 4: I mean, you would hope that Michael Bush keeps ascending,
- 41:09Speaker 4: but he had a fantastic year. What if someone gets
- 41:13Speaker 4: injured like Tucker, gave them a lot of security and
- 41:19Speaker 4: created kind of a floor or a foundation that you
- 41:23Speaker 4: might not miss until it's gone.
- 41:26Speaker 1: Yeah, And I'm not even saying they should spend on
- 41:29Speaker 1: Kyle Tucker. It's more I'm very curious to see how
- 41:34Speaker 1: that production is replaced, and I hope it's in a way.
- 41:36Speaker 1: I hope for the fans sake, gets in a way
- 41:38Speaker 1: where there's a little bit of certainty, you know it
- 41:42Speaker 1: going all young or going all the Matthew Boyd route,
- 41:45Speaker 1: who is great, but just banking on that you better
- 41:50Speaker 1: be right.
- 41:52Speaker 2: You need to be right.
- 41:53Speaker 4: And this is Bregman, ain't Bregman was perfect for this team,
- 41:57Speaker 4: That's what. Yeah, the models, the numbers, years, all.
- 42:01Speaker 3: Of that, and they didn't guess.
- 42:03Speaker 1: And I don't know what Bregman's going to look like,
- 42:05Speaker 1: what his contract is going to look like now, And
- 42:08Speaker 1: maybe maybe it isn't going to be something crazy. Maybe
- 42:10Speaker 1: if it's something that's not a ton of years, maybe
- 42:15Speaker 1: that's something they can revisit.
- 42:16Speaker 2: And and I.
- 42:17Speaker 1: Don't know how you fit that in. I do think
- 42:19Speaker 1: they like Shaw, but maybe I don't you know. Right
- 42:22Speaker 1: now would be a lot of speculation but I'm curious
- 42:28Speaker 1: to see how they move forward. Is it just going
- 42:30Speaker 1: to be like do they build like Milwaukee and Cleveland
- 42:34Speaker 1: and Tampa. That's going to drive fans nuts, and and
- 42:38Speaker 1: you know, I think they're should yeah, but I don't.
- 42:43Speaker 1: I'm not one hundred percent sure that they'll do that right,
- 42:45Speaker 1: But I'm not also ruling it out.
- 42:48Speaker 2: And I think that's frustrating to fans. So we'll see.
- 42:52Speaker 1: We have a lot of time to discuss this stuff, Patrick,
- 42:54Speaker 1: and we're going to be talking to a lot of
- 42:56Speaker 1: people over the coming weeks to get a better idea
- 42:59Speaker 1: of how they like look at this. Because you're right
- 43:01Speaker 1: everything he said at that press conference, that's not the
- 43:03Speaker 1: bottom line.
- 43:04Speaker 2: We have to keep digging. We have to keep figuring
- 43:06Speaker 2: out what direction they're going to go. There'll be more.
- 43:09Speaker 1: The GM meetings are in about two weeks, twish weeks.
- 43:12Speaker 1: We should be there to three weeks.
- 43:13Speaker 2: I guess.
- 43:15Speaker 1: You know, we've still gotta We'll see what happens there.
- 43:18Speaker 1: And you know, this is every off season is critical
- 43:21Speaker 1: and this is going to be a fascinating one.
