Transcript
- 0:04Hello and welcome to another episode of abby
- 0:07the podcast lady i'm abby graves your podcasting
- 0:10coach producer and number one hype woman for
- 0:13getting you to hit record on your own show now
- 0:15if you've been in the podcasting space for a
- 0:17minute you might have heard about a little event
- 0:20called podfest and by little I mean, it's huge.
- 0:24It is the event to attend if you are in the podcasting
- 0:27space. You may even be getting fed ads right
- 0:30now for PodFest. I know my feed has been full
- 0:32of targeted ads lately on social media. Instagram
- 0:36and Facebook have been like the biggest ones
- 0:38trying to get people to sign up to go to PodFest.
- 0:40It's a huge annual conference that happens in
- 0:42Orlando, Florida, where creators and hosts and
- 0:45editors and just general storytellers from all
- 0:48over the world come together and share ideas
- 0:50and just get to be podcast nerds together for
- 0:53a long weekend, be in a space where everyone
- 0:56speaks the same language and genuinely cares
- 0:58about the industry. Last January, I attended
- 1:01PodFest for the very first time and let me tell
- 1:04you, it completely changed. my outlook on the
- 1:07industry. I loved the industry before, but I
- 1:09left that weekend loving it even more than I
- 1:12possibly thought that I ever could have. That
- 1:14weekend totally flipped the script on how I saw
- 1:16podcasting as a whole. And this year, I'm not
- 1:19just attending PodFest. I actually get to speak
- 1:21at PodFest, which Insane never thought that would
- 1:25be happening. So today I want to take you behind
- 1:27the scenes of what that first experience at Podfest
- 1:30taught me and how it transformed my perspective
- 1:32on the podcasting landscape and what I'm really
- 1:35most excited for for this year. I just want to
- 1:37give you a little sneak preview of what's to
- 1:39come at Podfest 2026. So my introduction to this
- 1:42conference actually started exactly a year ago.
- 1:45Literally a year ago. This week is when I was
- 1:48first being fed ads for Podfest 2025. I kept
- 1:52seeing them pop up on Facebook and Instagram
- 1:54and I just kind of kept scrolling past them because
- 1:57I was kind of in a space where I was seeing a
- 1:59lot of like online conference ads like sign up
- 2:02for this webinar sign up for this get this free
- 2:05download like I was just bombarded with that
- 2:07on a daily basis. So it honestly took a lot for
- 2:10me to actually click on one of the pod fest ads
- 2:13I was seeing just because I was in such a saturated
- 2:16space with it. I'm like, I don't have time for
- 2:18another online conference. I don't want to sign
- 2:19up for another thing where I'm getting bombarded
- 2:22with emails. Like this just ain't it. But those
- 2:25ads were relentless. And I'm so glad that they
- 2:27were because I finally clicked on it. I'm like,
- 2:29OK, what is Podfest? What is this thing? Because
- 2:32then I found out it wasn't an online conference.
- 2:34It was actually an in -person one. And I realized
- 2:37it was happening in Orlando, Florida. And I looked
- 2:39at the dates and I'm like, well, I guess I'm
- 2:41not doing anything that week. But as a self -employed
- 2:44person who only had been self -employed for like
- 2:47less than six months at that point, I'm like,
- 2:50can I? Can I go to a conference? Is that something
- 2:54I am capable of? Can I pull this off financially
- 2:57too? With the limited time that I have being
- 3:00self -employed and trying to get this business
- 3:01off the ground and get through its first year
- 3:04Successfully and I'm like, I don't know man.
- 3:06Should I go shouldn't I I toiled over it literally
- 3:09for a full week I just kept clicking on the podfest
- 3:11website and looking at it and closing it out
- 3:14and looking at it and closing it out and I Realized
- 3:17that it was something that was so specific to
- 3:21what? I was looking for. Being self -employed
- 3:24for about six months at that point, I was feeling
- 3:27not alone and abandoned, but I mean, I had gone
- 3:30from working at a company with branches all across
- 3:35the country. And then I worked for a local county
- 3:37organization that had 900 employees. And then
- 3:40all of a sudden I was self -employed. It was
- 3:42just Abby at Abby Graves Productions. And I realized
- 3:46Oh, I'm kind of lonely. I feel like I'm kind
- 3:48of all alone in this world. And I didn't know
- 3:50anyone else who was doing what I was doing being
- 3:53a podcast producer. I was kind of just trying
- 3:55to figure things out on my own. And I realized
- 3:58that if I attended this pod fest. maybe I could
- 4:02meet some more people who were like me, trying
- 4:04to do this on their own or maybe working for
- 4:06a company or just trying to find other people
- 4:08who had a shared interest in the podcasting space.
- 4:12And I'm like, you know what? This is what people
- 4:15do if they want to be successful. They find other
- 4:17people doing what they're doing. So I ended up
- 4:20booking a ticket to PodFest and there was actually
- 4:23a ticket increase that was happening on like
- 4:25the last day of October. I actually called Liz
- 4:28from Sunny Mary Meadow, wrote it tourism podcast.
- 4:32She was my first client and my friend. I'm like,
- 4:34you know what? I want to do this and I think
- 4:36you should come do it too. And she's like, well,
- 4:37why would I do it? She's like, I have a podcast,
- 4:39but why would I go to a conference on this? And
- 4:41I told her that there was actually a entire learning
- 4:45track dedicated to being an author with a podcast.
- 4:49Liz had unfortunately lost her husband to a heart
- 4:52attack a few years prior and she was working
- 4:55on a memoir. At that point, it was just sitting
- 4:57in a document on her computer and she's like,
- 5:00I don't know what to do with this. I know I want
- 5:01it to be a book, but I don't know what the next
- 5:03steps are. I'm like, well, if we go to this conference,
- 5:06I can go focus on the monetization tracks and
- 5:09the editing tracks and that sort of thing. And
- 5:11you can focus on the author track and you can
- 5:13go learn about how to take your podcast and your
- 5:16book and turn it into An actual published book
- 5:20and maybe that's what we'll figure out when we're
- 5:22there and she's like, okay, let's do it So right
- 5:24before the ticket increase hit I actually booked
- 5:27our tickets. I booked our flights. I booked our
- 5:29hotel I just took care of everything I'm like,
- 5:30okay block off your calendar for this week in
- 5:33January because we are going to Orlando, Florida
- 5:35for a podcasting conference and I think it didn't
- 5:38really hit us that we were actually doing that
- 5:41until we were like on the plane heading down
- 5:44there and we're like What are we doing with our
- 5:46lives? We're going to a podcasting conference.
- 5:48Who's even going to be there? Like we didn't
- 5:50know what to expect for attendance. We honestly
- 5:54didn't really know what to expect for speakers
- 5:56and learning opportunities because we had searched
- 5:59it and we looked at the website, but we didn't
- 6:01know exactly what we were getting into. We're
- 6:03like, what if there's only 20 people here? What
- 6:05if it's so tiny? And we were just kind of going
- 6:07in blind and just hoping for the best. And we're
- 6:10like, you know, if anything, if it's horrible,
- 6:12we'll just. hang out in Orlando for a few days
- 6:14and then come back home. It's a vacation. Whatever.
- 6:16We'll figure it out as we go. So we get down
- 6:19to Orlando, Florida, and we actually didn't stay
- 6:21at the hotel where the conference was happening.
- 6:23It was happening at the Renaissance at Sea World,
- 6:25which is right across the parking lot from the
- 6:28Sea World Amusement Park. You can actually hear
- 6:29the screams from the roller coasters, which is
- 6:32kind of fun. And it's happening at the same place
- 6:33this year, but We are both early risers and we
- 6:38stayed at, I think it was a Hampton Inn and suites
- 6:40a couple of blocks away. So we woke up, had our
- 6:42continental breakfast and got over to the place
- 6:45where the conference was happening. And we walked
- 6:47into this beautiful, like immaculate lobby and
- 6:52the lights were hardly on. Like we were there
- 6:54like. 8 a .m. We were there way too early. I
- 6:57don't even think the things started until like
- 6:59I want to say the first podfest sessions were
- 7:01maybe at like 10 or 11 We were there like insanely
- 7:04early just because we're both very punctual people
- 7:07and we can't control ourselves We thought well,
- 7:10there's gonna be a line to check in we got to
- 7:11get our badges We got to get all that squared
- 7:13away There was no one in line We just walked
- 7:16right up and got them. I think the volunteers
- 7:19were even a little surprised that we were there
- 7:21that early, but I don't know. We didn't know
- 7:23what to expect. So we were just kind of flying
- 7:24by the seat of our pants, but it actually worked
- 7:26out pretty well because Liz was in the very beginning
- 7:29process of working on the concept of her venue,
- 7:33the bloom room that is actually opening this
- 7:35week. A lot has happened in this past year, but
- 7:37we actually spent a lot of time walking around
- 7:39the hotel lobby because they had all these like
- 7:41really unique furniture pieces and insert video
- 7:44here of her like tipping chairs over to figure
- 7:46out what brand they are and like what the styles
- 7:48are, because that's how we spent the morning
- 7:50waiting for Podfest to start is scoping out furniture
- 7:53because that just seemed like. the right way
- 7:55to kill time. So PodFest gets started. And once
- 7:59it was actually going, we were honestly blown
- 8:01away by just the level of knowledge that was
- 8:05being shared. We were kind of thinking like,
- 8:07ooh, you know, maybe it's going to be a little
- 8:09gate keepy. People are going to be keeping secrets
- 8:12to like how they've been successful. Like we
- 8:14didn't know what to expect, but right out of
- 8:16the gate, we realized that this was a place of
- 8:19learning and sharing and growing together. No
- 8:21one was there to keep secrets. No one was there
- 8:23to gate keep. strategies. Everyone was sharing
- 8:25what they had learned, how they had been successful,
- 8:28what they've done differently. So then we could
- 8:30then apply it to our own shows and content. It
- 8:33was apparent right from the jump. There was no
- 8:35secrets being kept here. It was a weekend dedicated
- 8:38to sharing the knowledge you have with the person
- 8:40sitting next to you in hopes of lifting them
- 8:42up and then them lifting you up as well, which
- 8:45I thought was really cool. And I was so concerned
- 8:47about that. I'm like, what if this is just a
- 8:49big secret, secret kind of thing? And it definitely
- 8:52wasn't. And literally within the first 10 minutes
- 8:56of our sessions, because I went to the monetization
- 8:59one. Liz went to the author one. We had texted
- 9:01each other. I said, this is amazing. And she
- 9:03said, I'm going to leave this weekend with a
- 9:05book deal. She literally texted that to me. I
- 9:08don't know if I screenshotted it or not. If I
- 9:10screenshotted it, I will insert it in the video
- 9:11version of this podcast. But she literally said,
- 9:14by the end of this weekend, I am going to have
- 9:16a book deal 10 minutes into this thing starting.
- 9:20And she did. She had a book deal by the end of
- 9:22it. And that woman, she puts her mind to something
- 9:24and it's just it's going to get done, which I
- 9:26find fascinating and inspiring. I got to have
- 9:29her on the podcast at some point. It was incredible
- 9:31what we had learned over the course of the weekend.
- 9:34She went to multiple meetings. She pitched her
- 9:36book. She ended up walking away with a contract
- 9:39from Morgan James Publishing. Her book actually
- 9:42is going to be available for pre -order by the
- 9:44time Podfest 2026 rolls around, which I think
- 9:47is incredible. And I'm so proud of her and it's
- 9:50just incredible what had come from that just
- 9:54taking a chance on going to Podfest. And I'm
- 9:58so eternally grateful that we went. It was just
- 10:01so cool because everyone was there to learn and
- 10:04share and connect. There wasn't any ego. There
- 10:06wasn't any competition. Like it was just pure
- 10:09collaboration. I, like I mentioned, went to the
- 10:12sessions about monetization. I went to a lot
- 10:14of the ones on editing. I went to a lot of the
- 10:16ones on video podcasting. I popped in on some
- 10:19AI ones as well. That was kind of my main focus
- 10:21for the weekend is how can I make this process
- 10:23simple and help my clients hopefully monetize
- 10:26and What strategies can we put in place to help
- 10:29them be successful? But honestly, the most powerful
- 10:31moments weren't even those sessions. Those sessions
- 10:33were fantastic. And I'm genuinely looking forward
- 10:36to going to them again this year, because I know
- 10:38they're all going to be different, but kind of
- 10:39the same like general topics. But what I really
- 10:43liked was the connection in the hallways and
- 10:45the breaks between the sessions, because that's
- 10:47where we got to know each other. And those spontaneous
- 10:50conversations with other podcasters were just.
- 10:54It filled my cup so much because we're all chasing
- 10:56big dreams. We're all experimenting with what
- 10:58we're doing and we're all showing up consistently,
- 11:00which is so dang hard. But if you have people
- 11:04you know that are rooting for you, it makes showing
- 11:06up consistently so much easier. And meeting those
- 11:09people in the hallways, making those friends,
- 11:12it truly turned into its own kind of like little
- 11:14ecosystem. Podcasting is... It is an ecosystem.
- 11:19You got to lean on other people and their skill
- 11:21sets to be successful. It thrives on relationships,
- 11:25not algorithms. Algorithms are important. Don't
- 11:27get me wrong. They're very important. And we
- 11:29do have to kind of bow to our algorithm overlords
- 11:32sometimes, but we got to keep in mind too that
- 11:34the relationship side of podcasting is just as
- 11:37important as posting and posting consistently
- 11:40and adding the right tags to things. By the end
- 11:42of the weekend, I had an entire notebook full
- 11:45of notes. Like it was just, honestly, I should
- 11:47pull it up and look through them. My handwriting
- 11:50is so bad. This year I'm bringing an iPad and
- 11:52taking notes on an iPad because I can't read
- 11:54my own writing. But I just consumed so much wonderful
- 11:58information and there were just some key lessons
- 12:00that really stuck with me. One of them being
- 12:02connection beats perfection. The most impactful
- 12:05shows are not the ones with the flawless audio
- 12:08or the fancy studios. I say as I'm recording
- 12:11in my own fancy studio. But they're the ones
- 12:15where the listeners are feeling seen and heard
- 12:17and represented and learning something and there's
- 12:20valuable information being shared. So sometimes.
- 12:24Oftentimes, actually, the show that you put out
- 12:26isn't gonna be flawless. It's not gonna be the
- 12:28most perfect show in the entire world, but there's
- 12:30gonna be something of value in there. And if
- 12:32it's providing value to other people, that is
- 12:34worth its weight in gold. The other big lesson
- 12:36that I took away is that collaboration creates
- 12:38momentum. I left Feeling Podfest just reinvigorated.
- 12:42I felt like I just had this like... Light in
- 12:45my heart that I wanted to shine out for the entire
- 12:47world and spread the good news of podcasting
- 12:50I met so many people that I later collaborated
- 12:52with I met fellow editors that I can now call
- 12:55in a pinch which oh my gosh that is so valuable
- 12:58we've actually helped each other out in some
- 13:00cases and I did not realize that there were so
- 13:04many other podcast editors out there like me,
- 13:06and that was so awesome. I can't wait to see
- 13:08them all again this year. I genuinely cannot
- 13:10wait to connect with the fellow editors in the
- 13:13room because we are a special type of people,
- 13:16and when we can sit down and speak each other's
- 13:18language over lunch a few times in a long weekend,
- 13:20it is just... chef's kiss perfection. I also
- 13:23met a bunch of new friends and I can't wait to
- 13:25see them all. I know a lot of them are posting
- 13:27that they're coming on Instagram, so can't wait
- 13:29to catch up with you guys there. I even ended
- 13:31up getting a new client out of it who is also
- 13:34a friend, Mark Hicks. I am so excited to see
- 13:37him in person again at PodFest. He is actually
- 13:39a fellow author. So Liz introduced me to Mark
- 13:43and Mark has been my client now for almost a
- 13:45year and I helped produce his show, The Learning
- 13:47Love Podcast. It's in collaboration with his
- 13:50foundation. Learning Love Foundation, which I
- 13:52think everyone should go and listen to his show,
- 13:54not just because he's my client, but because
- 13:55there's some really good valuable information
- 13:57he shares about building happy and healthy relationships.
- 14:00So shout out, Mark. Can't wait to see you again
- 14:02at PodFest this year. And it's just so cool,
- 14:05the collaboration that came from one short weekend
- 14:08in Orlando, Florida. The other big lesson that
- 14:11I wanted to mention. that I took away from this
- 14:14is that the industry is evolving and it's evolving
- 14:17fast. There's so many new AI tools, there's video
- 14:20podcasting, there's niche communities. The landscape
- 14:23is definitely shifting, but instead of that being
- 14:26scary and intimidating and just shutting down
- 14:29and not evolving because it seems like it's just
- 14:31too much to do. The weekend at podfest made me
- 14:34feel excited about the changes that were happening
- 14:37in podcasting. There's room for everyone's voice.
- 14:40It is not oversaturated. You have a story to
- 14:42tell and there's an audience hungry for it. And
- 14:45that was just something that has sat with me
- 14:47in my chest since last year. And every time someone
- 14:50comes to me and they're like, I'm thinking about
- 14:52starting a podcast, but everyone's got a podcast.
- 14:54So I don't know. I think I'm just going to skip
- 14:56it. Like, no, your story is just as important
- 14:58as the person next to you who yeah, might have
- 15:01a podcast, but guess what? They don't have your
- 15:03story. You're the only one with your story. So
- 15:05it's just so cool that the industry is diversifying
- 15:08and there's room for everyone to learn and grow
- 15:11and be a part of it. And I just, I can't wait
- 15:13for this year. It's going to be so much fun.
- 15:15I can't wait. for that feeling to come over me
- 15:17again. Speaking of that giddy feeling, I actually
- 15:20have an entirely different level to that giddy
- 15:22feeling that I am excited for in the butterflies
- 15:25in my stomach for PodFest this year because I
- 15:28am not just going as a person with an editor
- 15:31pass. Last year I was an editor, Liz was creator.
- 15:34This year I have a different label going on my
- 15:36name badge and that is Speaker. Pew, pew, pew,
- 15:40pew, pew. Cute little. little siren noise here.
- 15:42I am actually one of the selected speakers at
- 15:46PodFest. Oh my gosh, saying that out loud and
- 15:48just like, I have goosebumps. I remember sitting
- 15:52there last year and watching the speakers get
- 15:54up on stage and I was thinking, wow, they have
- 15:56so much valuable knowledge to share. I would
- 15:59love to be up there. I don't know what I would
- 16:01talk about, but I think it would just be so cool
- 16:03to be the expert on stage sharing these ideas
- 16:05and inspiring other people. And this year I get
- 16:09to do that. That someday has arrived and that
- 16:12someday comes up the week of January 15th. So
- 16:17speaker applications opened over the summer and
- 16:19I have been avidly following the Podfest pages
- 16:22all across social media because I am a total
- 16:25nerd for this. Fest Expo now. And the second
- 16:29that speaker applications opened, I sent my application
- 16:32in because I'm like, I don't know how long speaker
- 16:34applications are open, but I am not missing out
- 16:36on this opportunity to throw my hat into the
- 16:38ring, submitted my application and didn't hear
- 16:42anything. Didn't hear anything didn't hear anything.
- 16:44There was no updates It just kept getting an
- 16:46email saying speaker applications are open apply
- 16:48now and I'm like, okay Well, maybe they saw mine
- 16:51and thought she's not ready for this and I'm
- 16:53like, you know what? That's okay. They're in
- 16:55charge They know what's best for their conference
- 16:57and I already have my tickets. I'm going anyway.
- 16:59I don't even care so I Just silently sat there
- 17:03and waited and then it turns out over 400 people
- 17:07applied to be speakers at podfest Go figure,
- 17:10you know, an entire conference dedicated to professional
- 17:13talkers. And yeah, a lot of us want to get on
- 17:15stage and talk. So there was over 400 apps that
- 17:18came in. Somehow, by some miracle, the stars
- 17:21aligned and they selected me to be one of the
- 17:23speakers at Podfest. And I am beyond. I can't
- 17:28wait. I'm going to be talking about how your
- 17:29podcast is more than just an audio format. It
- 17:32can be the center of everything that you create
- 17:35online. And it's just something I firmly believe
- 17:37in. It's something I practice every day with
- 17:39not only myself, but with my clients. And I can't
- 17:42wait to share how podcasting inspires me and
- 17:46inspire other people. It's just such a gift.
- 17:49I'm so excited to be a speaker at PodFest this
- 17:51year. Like I just... The fact that I get to spread
- 17:54the same happy, joyful energy about the industry
- 17:59that people did last year and it just lit a fire
- 18:02in me, I can hopefully light a fire in someone
- 18:04else. I'm just really looking forward to it.
- 18:06So if you're coming to podfest this year, please
- 18:09come and say hi. Come to my speech. I don't know
- 18:11what day or time my speech is happening yet.
- 18:13That has not been revealed to anyone. They haven't
- 18:16finalized the schedule yet, but I will be speaking.
- 18:19And when I know you'll know, because obviously
- 18:21I'll be posting about it all across the internet
- 18:23because I'm shameless that way. But I am so excited
- 18:27and it's going to be great. It's going to be
- 18:28so wonderful. I'm just like so excited. I got
- 18:31to start working on the speech and like make
- 18:33sure it's all coherent because I don't want to
- 18:35get up there and just be like, I'm just excited
- 18:37to be here. I promise it won't be that. I have
- 18:40three months to figure this out. So just to kind
- 18:43of put a bow on things here, I want to give you
- 18:45my key takeaways from my journey with PodFest,
- 18:48which honestly has been going on for about a
- 18:50year now because that's when I bought my tickets
- 18:51last year. Number one is never underestimate
- 18:54the power of community. The people that you meet
- 18:56in this space can change your career. and your
- 18:59mindset. It's just the power of being around
- 19:02like -minded individuals. It is, there's truly
- 19:05nothing like it. Number two, keep showing up.
- 19:08You never know who is watching your consistency
- 19:11and where it might lead, who you might be inspiring,
- 19:14who you might be lighting a fire within. Keep
- 19:16showing up. Keep sharing your information. My
- 19:18light bulb just died if you're watching the video
- 19:20version of this and it just flickered. Oh, it's
- 19:22back on. I'm leaving that part in. That's real
- 19:25life, man. And then the third takeaway is don't
- 19:28just consume the industry. You got to contribute
- 19:30to it. One of my favorite sayings is if you want
- 19:32a village, you have to be a villager and showing
- 19:35up to things like PodFest. If you're in the podcasting
- 19:38industry, like other expos, like volunteer opportunities
- 19:41in whatever industry you're in, you need to contribute
- 19:44to it if you want to see it thrive. Show up,
- 19:47be a villager in your village. So if I can encourage
- 19:49you to do anything today, I want to encourage
- 19:52you to go where your people are. Show up, learn,
- 19:56and let yourself be inspired because the next
- 19:58time you walk into a room full of podcasters,
- 20:00you might just realize you're not just part of
- 20:02the industry, you are. the industry. I want to
- 20:05thank you so much for tuning into Abby the podcast
- 20:07lady. If this episode sparked something in you,
- 20:10please share it with a fellow podcaster or tag
- 20:13me on Instagram. I'd love to hear what you took
- 20:16away from this episode. And if you're heading
- 20:18to podfest, I would love to see you at podfest.
- 20:21Let's hook up there and make friends and make
- 20:23connections. It's such a wonderful opportunity.
- 20:26And if you're looking to get tickets, I have
