- 1:23Speaker 1: like that that are exclusive to this channel. You can
- 1:26Speaker 1: check them out. Also access to timed exclusive content. And
- 1:35Speaker 1: when I say timed exclusive, not everything is going to
- 1:38Speaker 1: be time Like you know, I dropped it on a
- 1:42Speaker 1: Monday and now everyone can watch it on a Friday. No,
- 1:46Speaker 1: sometimes it may be I dropped it and whenever I
- 1:50Speaker 1: feel like making it available to everybody else, it is,
- 1:53Speaker 1: you know, things like that. But more importantly, becoming a
- 1:57Speaker 1: member of the YouTube channel support reduction of the podcast.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I take whatever proceeds I get from this podcast and
- 2:05Speaker 1: put it right back in. So whether that's a four
- 2:08Speaker 1: K camera or a light right or helping me pace
- 2:14Speaker 1: monthly software or ads on social media, I put it
- 2:19Speaker 1: all back into the podcast to keep bringing you great content.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Speaking of great content, I have some coming up this
- 2:28Speaker 1: year that's pretty dope. But shout outs, just keep the
- 2:31Speaker 1: shadows going really quick. Shout out to everybody listening to
- 2:35Speaker 1: audio form because this twenty twenty six marks ten years
- 2:41Speaker 1: of Hip Hop Now Podcast in audio form, specifically now.
- 2:45Speaker 1: The video came about seriously about two years ago on
- 2:51Speaker 1: this channel. I've you know, I've tested and tried a
- 2:53Speaker 1: couple of things. This channel was a bunch of different
- 2:56Speaker 1: things before it was like my testing ground. But officially
- 3:00Speaker 1: the year of Hip Hop fifty and twenty twenty three,
- 3:03Speaker 1: I started doing the video version of this podcast. But
- 3:09Speaker 1: to celebrate commemorate ten years of Hip Hop Now podcast
- 3:15Speaker 1: with myself, we are going to celebrate the year nineteen
- 3:19Speaker 1: ninety six and a number of dope albums from that
- 3:25Speaker 1: year that have their thirtieth anniversary. Now, the thing is is,
- 3:30Speaker 1: in the past, I've done shows where I'm talking all
- 3:35Speaker 1: about ninety six in general. But this time I decided,
- 3:39Speaker 1: why don't we focus on twelve albums once a month
- 3:43Speaker 1: with a guest and kind of revisit and review the time,
- 3:48Speaker 1: the album and why we think the album is a classic.
- 3:51Speaker 1: So I got a couple of those episodes in the chamber.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Some will land on the anniversary, some will you know,
- 4:01Speaker 1: within the year or roughly around the anniversary. But look
- 4:05Speaker 1: out for the first episode to land on January thirtieth,
- 4:10Speaker 1: where I have my man ach helping me out, helping
- 4:14Speaker 1: me start this run of special episodes, and the topic
- 4:19Speaker 1: will be Tupac's all Eyes on Me and mcavelly, but
- 4:26Speaker 1: in general for Tupac, specifically nineteen ninety six because that
- 4:31Speaker 1: was the last year TUPAC was actually alive. But when
- 4:34Speaker 1: you look at the two albums, the success and all
- 4:38Speaker 1: that happened, this is a This is a two hour show, y'all,
- 4:42Speaker 1: and me and I really dig deep into those albums.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Our feelings and what went down in nineteen ninety six.
- 4:49Speaker 1: So stay on the lookout and if you see them
- 4:52Speaker 1: popping up, you know and the schedule, hit the bell
- 4:55Speaker 1: button that reminds you when those episodes this episode goes live.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Big shout out to hip HOPDX dot com, all hip
- 5:07Speaker 1: hop dot com, social media in general, in any other
- 5:12Speaker 1: place where I get my stories from. Let's get right
- 5:14Speaker 1: into the business. So this show, this episode, you know,
- 5:22Speaker 1: coming into the new year, is already starting off a
- 5:27Speaker 1: little sad and I have some you know, some stuff
- 5:32Speaker 1: that's a little bit exciting at the end. But we
- 5:34Speaker 1: must acknowledge those people who have contributed to the hip
- 5:39Speaker 1: hop culture anytime these things go down. And John Forte,
- 5:44Speaker 1: if you don't know, used to be a part of
- 5:46Speaker 1: the refugee camp with the Foojis played a nice role,
- 5:51Speaker 1: a pivotal role, if not, you know, as far as
- 5:54Speaker 1: his introduction in their nineteen ninety six album, the highly
- 6:01Speaker 1: successful album for the Foujis kind of put John Forte
- 6:05Speaker 1: on the map just being a part of that and
- 6:07Speaker 1: not even not even just being a part of that album,
- 6:10Speaker 1: the fact that he was actually dope, you know what
- 6:13Speaker 1: I'm saying. And two years later, in nineteen ninety eight,
- 6:18Speaker 1: he released his debut album on Roughhouse Records, entitled poly
- 6:25Speaker 1: Si Very slept on Album, Very You know how slept
- 6:32Speaker 1: on it is? I slept on it now. I only
- 6:35Speaker 1: say that because nineteen ninety eight is another one of
- 6:38Speaker 1: those monster years. Believe me, we can go down the line,
- 6:45Speaker 1: but we're not today. But there were a lot of albums,
- 6:49Speaker 1: and I know for myself, there was a point in time,
- 6:53Speaker 1: you know, before the streaming services, where if you wanted
- 6:57Speaker 1: to hear album and it wasn't getting played on a radio,
- 7:00Speaker 1: you had to go buy it, or maybe a place
- 7:04Speaker 1: like Tower Records or something like that, some record storey
- 7:07Speaker 1: you can go in. They let you listen to albums
- 7:09Speaker 1: before you purchase them. But if you wasn't set up
- 7:13Speaker 1: in any of those situations, unless you wanted to go
- 7:17Speaker 1: and get that album, you would never hear it. And
- 7:20Speaker 1: I remember hearing a song or two, and I think
- 7:22Speaker 1: I heard the single off of the poly Side album.
- 7:26Speaker 1: I think it was I'm not sure which one it was.
- 7:32Speaker 1: What the single was, the one with why Cleft. It
- 7:35Speaker 1: might have been God is Love, God is War or
- 7:39Speaker 1: nineteen nine Flash the Message. I think it was that one,
- 7:44Speaker 1: and I just remember the record kind of reminded me
- 7:48Speaker 1: of their was Staying Alive joint off of where he
- 7:53Speaker 1: was featured, and it's kind of like his debut on
- 7:55Speaker 1: The Foujis. It was almost like the same feeling and formula.
- 7:58Speaker 1: And I think around that time, you know, again, two
- 8:01Speaker 1: years later and a bunch of hip hop has happened,
- 8:05Speaker 1: I just didn't feel like it would piqued my interest, right.
- 8:10Speaker 1: It didn't make me want to go listen to the
- 8:12Speaker 1: album hearing that, and I believe that was on the radio.
- 8:15Speaker 1: And again, back then, you don't get many shots at
- 8:19Speaker 1: it impressing someone who's a hip hop fan, like if
- 8:22Speaker 1: that's your single, if it's not working, it's not working,
- 8:26Speaker 1: and you better hope you get another single to be
- 8:29Speaker 1: in rotation. And it just got to the point where,
- 8:33Speaker 1: you know, time passed and I know some people had
- 8:37Speaker 1: said it was a dope album, and a few years back,
- 8:40Speaker 1: I was like, yo, you know, because of streaming services,
- 8:44Speaker 1: I was like, well, let me go listen because it
- 8:46Speaker 1: was something I can go right on my phone and
- 8:49Speaker 1: just listen to it. And I remember feeling like, man,
- 8:54Speaker 1: this this album is right up my alley as far
- 8:56Speaker 1: as hip hop goes, but I missed it, but everybody
- 9:02Speaker 1: knows the story. There was a time after that where
- 9:05Speaker 1: John Forte wound up getting locked up. I believe he
- 9:08Speaker 1: was in the FEDS and all of that, but then
- 9:11Speaker 1: he was able to get out. And recently, you know,
- 9:14Speaker 1: he passed away and he was only like fifty something,
- 9:17Speaker 1: which is, you know, terrible to think that some people
- 9:22Speaker 1: only get that amount of time on this earth. But
- 9:24Speaker 1: while he was here and what he left, and this
- 9:27Speaker 1: ain't the only album you can go find from John Forte,
- 9:29Speaker 1: to be honest, he left a lot of great work,
- 9:34Speaker 1: collaborated with many people. I believe he had a family
- 9:38Speaker 1: beyond a family, So rest in peace to John Forte.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Check out poly Side if you a hip hop head
- 9:46Speaker 1: and never heard it. If you like John Forte, even
- 9:49Speaker 1: if you liked him on the Fujis, you should check
- 9:51Speaker 1: this out. He's a pretty dope dude. Voice flows had
- 9:56Speaker 1: You know he can rap next to DMX, rap next
- 9:59Speaker 1: to Fat Joe, not new Fat Joe. That you know,
- 10:03Speaker 1: that's kind of like old Man. Ain't be lying all
- 10:05Speaker 1: the time talking about Fat Joe the Gangster. Okay, Joey,
- 10:08Speaker 1: we're talking about that one that was like in the
- 10:11Speaker 1: field was active with the rapping. So again, rest in peace,
- 10:16Speaker 1: John forteen. Next more bad news unfortunately, but recently Dazz
- 10:26Speaker 1: put up a dazz of the dog Pound for those
- 10:29Speaker 1: who don't know, put up a post on Instagram with
- 10:37Speaker 1: a picture of Corrupt and it said God said we
- 10:41Speaker 1: shall live and not die. I want to send a
- 10:44Speaker 1: big shout out to my big brother Corrupt, get well,
- 10:47Speaker 1: speedy recovery. Need all fans to send Corrupt and get
- 10:51Speaker 1: well message flood his Instagram. Tell him how much we
- 10:55Speaker 1: love him. Rest in peace to my cousin Joe who
- 10:59Speaker 1: named and others that we lost. So I need everybody
- 11:02Speaker 1: to hit Corrupt and let him know that we love him.
- 11:06Speaker 1: From his little brother Dad's life is serious and what
- 11:11Speaker 1: he said, dog Pound gangsters for life. God first. So
- 11:17Speaker 1: apparently Corrupt was hospitalized recently with some serious health issues.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Now I don't have the details about what those health
- 11:32Speaker 1: issues are. And if you've been around long enough, if
- 11:38Speaker 1: you've been around certain types of people in certain neighborhoods,
- 11:46Speaker 1: there was a change in Corrupt at some point physically
- 11:50Speaker 1: and even in some ways. You know. There's some interviews
- 11:53Speaker 1: I saw man where he looked. I couldn't tell if
- 11:55Speaker 1: he was just high off of something else or drunk
- 11:59Speaker 1: or medication, because medication could do that to you, can
- 12:02Speaker 1: delay you a little bit. But I knew he was
- 12:06Speaker 1: dealing with something, and you would see it over time,
- 12:11Speaker 1: and he never really looked like he was healthy again.
- 12:14Speaker 1: He kind of just looked the same after seeing that,
- 12:18Speaker 1: you know, good days and bad days kind of situation.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Dog Pound, maybe two years ago, dropped one of the
- 12:25Speaker 1: best albums of the year according to me, fire Fire album,
- 12:31Speaker 1: West Coast album. Corrupt was there for all of it.
- 12:34Speaker 1: So hopefully, you know this, this brother gets the help
- 12:39Speaker 1: he needs and gets better. I would second dazz Is
- 12:45Speaker 1: sentiments right there. If you're a rant fan and you
- 12:48Speaker 1: really a big fan of dog Pound or just a
- 12:51Speaker 1: big fan of Corrupt, apparently he needs this, so definitely
- 12:58Speaker 1: hit up his ig. I think up mostly does ig.
- 13:02Speaker 1: So hit up his ig, you know, drop a message
- 13:05Speaker 1: in there, and hopefully the brother is in a situation
- 13:08Speaker 1: where he can read those messages, because sometimes that will
- 13:11Speaker 1: help you in some ways, even if it's just in
- 13:15Speaker 1: having a higher spirit, you know, at the moment while
- 13:18Speaker 1: he deals with these health issues. So shout out to corrupt,
- 13:23Speaker 1: one of the illess on the mic. Okay, don't sleep,
- 13:25Speaker 1: go listen to stranded on Death Row. When I heard corrupt,
- 13:29Speaker 1: I was like, Yo, who's that? And lastly we hear
- 13:38Speaker 1: y'all we are here. We were finally here. J Cole
- 13:45Speaker 1: has finally started the official rollout, no more teasing and
- 13:49Speaker 1: testing the water. Like y'all like me, y'all don't like me.
- 13:52Speaker 1: J Cole is like, I'm outside. I'm just I'm out here. Okay.
- 13:57Speaker 1: The fall Off, if you don't know, is in our
- 14:00Speaker 1: album that J Cole has been talking about for years,
- 14:06Speaker 1: teasing in a lot of ways for years. It hit.
- 14:11Speaker 1: It hit a you know, i's gonna say a pothole,
- 14:14Speaker 1: but sinkhole hit a sinkhole on the way to being
- 14:19Speaker 1: delivered to us. Let's rewind just a little bit for
- 14:23Speaker 1: those who don't know, but back in twenty twenty four,
- 14:27Speaker 1: the rollout for the fall Off album was on the way,
- 14:32Speaker 1: but we were getting this mixtape first called Mike Delete
- 14:35Speaker 1: Later and the mixtape was really dope. It's really dope.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Then there was a song on there responding to Kendrick Lamar.
- 14:47Speaker 1: It was essentially a disc track responding to Kendrick Lamar's
- 14:52Speaker 1: shot at him and Drake, and then J Cole went
- 14:57Speaker 1: to a show and said he didn't want no more
- 15:01Speaker 1: smoke with his battle and stuff. He's bound out. I
- 15:05Speaker 1: remember he was, you know, I remember what he was saying,
- 15:07Speaker 1: and I was so pissed at him because I'm a fan, right,
- 15:13Speaker 1: I'm a fan of Jacob and he talked so much
- 15:18Speaker 1: about being the best and what he'll do to rappers
- 15:21Speaker 1: and blah blah blah, and this record was somewhat lackluster.
- 15:25Speaker 1: And then he was turning around and bound out of
- 15:28Speaker 1: the battle, and a lot of people gave him flack
- 15:33Speaker 1: for that, including myself, But I never lost interest in
- 15:36Speaker 1: the falloff. And so fast forward, we know what happened
- 15:40Speaker 1: with the battle. J Cole tries to drop a song
- 15:44Speaker 1: here are every now and again. He dropped one song
- 15:48Speaker 1: that was clearly apology to Drake for whatever role he
- 15:53Speaker 1: played in, which is a good sentiment, right, But at
- 15:58Speaker 1: that point in time, as far as hip hop tension,
- 16:02Speaker 1: and I ain't talking about real street beef, I'm talking
- 16:04Speaker 1: about rappers MC's that's what we're talking about. It felt
- 16:11Speaker 1: too soon, and it felt like we don't want to
- 16:14Speaker 1: really hear from you man, because you bowed out. Drake
- 16:19Speaker 1: got jumped and now you apologize. He got jumped by
- 16:23Speaker 1: one person. But you know what I mean. But last year,
- 16:28Speaker 1: and I've said this on this podcast before, he dropped
- 16:31Speaker 1: a song called Clouds, and I was like, that's the
- 16:35Speaker 1: pocket forget. Don't even bring up that battle unless you
- 16:40Speaker 1: have something extremely unique to say about it that people
- 16:44Speaker 1: can be like. I could dig that and just move on,
- 16:48Speaker 1: let them move on. But Clouds was that record. I
- 16:51Speaker 1: was like, I like this joint. Well, now j Cole
- 16:54Speaker 1: is back and now he's like the fall Off album
- 16:59Speaker 1: has come out. No more waiting, right, So this is
- 17:04Speaker 1: on hip hopdx dot Com. JCOB reveals the fall Off
- 17:08Speaker 1: album release date and artwork, so catching the hip hop
- 17:14Speaker 1: world by surprise. On Wednesday, January fourteenth, the Dreamville rap
- 17:18Speaker 1: star announced that his long awaited seventh album will be
- 17:22Speaker 1: released on February sixth, which is at this point in time,
- 17:28Speaker 1: about three weeks away. We know you're watching this video
- 17:32Speaker 1: and it's later in twenty twenty six or twenty twenty seven.
- 17:35Speaker 1: You already heard out. Okay, you already know what happened.
- 17:38Speaker 1: It's Joe Ass out of here hit the light button though,
- 17:43Speaker 1: and then he also right, so he gave the release date,
- 17:49Speaker 1: gave us the album cover, and before we can like
- 17:54Speaker 1: really dig in, and you know how the internet does,
- 17:56Speaker 1: they start finding Easter eggs and stuff like that, and
- 17:59Speaker 1: with the day and which that kind of is. With
- 18:02Speaker 1: the date, with the artwork, he drops a new song
- 18:06Speaker 1: and a video. The song is entitled This to Track two,
- 18:13Speaker 1: which some believe hints at a double album, but I
- 18:18Speaker 1: sort of feel like it may hint at something else. Now,
- 18:23Speaker 1: if it's a J Cole double album, I wouldn't mind it,
- 18:27Speaker 1: as long as I think he's gonna need to have
- 18:32Speaker 1: some surprising features. I think Kendrick needs to be on
- 18:35Speaker 1: his album. I think he does the boy he did
- 18:42Speaker 1: everything wrong, so he don't need to pop up on
- 18:44Speaker 1: anything because we don't know what he's gonna say. Okay,
- 18:49Speaker 1: we're done with the battle. It's it's been almost two
- 18:51Speaker 1: we're headed into two years. Okay, it's over. But I
- 18:55Speaker 1: feel like, like, can right, get Kendrick on that joint
- 19:03Speaker 1: I don't know, make the second disc him and Kendrick
- 19:07Speaker 1: only I don't know. Finally get that meaningful jay Z feature.
- 19:14Speaker 1: I don't remember if he ever got a feature from
- 19:17Speaker 1: jay Z on the album. But even if he did,
- 19:23Speaker 1: which I kind of feel like, I think he did
- 19:27Speaker 1: get another one. Jay Z hasn't wrapped in a minute.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Make this a big deal. Beyond you saying it's a
- 19:35Speaker 1: big deal based off of your career. That's still a
- 19:38Speaker 1: big deal. But make it a bigger deal. Make it
- 19:42Speaker 1: like I don't want features on everything, but make it.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Start studing, make those features count, make sure it's dope.
- 19:48Speaker 1: And I'm not trying to tell him how to do things.
- 19:51Speaker 1: But what I feel from this first single, it feels
- 19:57Speaker 1: like it's going to be special now. The song this
- 20:02Speaker 1: to Track Too is basically like an homage to NAS's Rewind.
- 20:11Speaker 1: The song Rewind from Nas appeared on his album Still Madic,
- 20:16Speaker 1: and it was Nas basically telling a story backwards, right,
- 20:23Speaker 1: a story of his day backwards, right. So he's starting
- 20:27Speaker 1: at the end of his day and going all the
- 20:30Speaker 1: way forward to the first thing he did. Right. Well,
- 20:33Speaker 1: j Cole is doing the same thing as far as
- 20:37Speaker 1: the story and telling it backwards, but it's his life
- 20:42Speaker 1: and it starts out with him in a grave, which
- 20:47Speaker 1: I was like, this is kind of dope. The word
- 20:49Speaker 1: play is there, the video does an excellent job of
- 20:54Speaker 1: interpreting the lyrics visually and not all literally, like it's
- 21:00Speaker 1: really like, I don't want to overuse this word, but
- 21:04Speaker 1: it's really like artistic, you know what I'm saying the
- 21:06Speaker 1: way it plays out. And if I was going to
- 21:11Speaker 1: gripe about something, because I think the song is dope, right,
- 21:14Speaker 1: I think it's cool. If I was going to gripe
- 21:17Speaker 1: about something, it's I would have wanted him to play
- 21:21Speaker 1: a little bit more in the area of when he
- 21:24Speaker 1: was older, right where he starts as a as like
- 21:27Speaker 1: a grandfather and talk about the future, right like what
- 21:33Speaker 1: you see in your future. He kind of skipped from
- 21:37Speaker 1: grandfather to like now and then started to recap his history,
- 21:45Speaker 1: which again it was still dope. But I was texting
- 21:50Speaker 1: with the homio and he said this, and I totally agree.
- 21:54Speaker 1: The video does a lot to make this song what
- 21:59Speaker 1: it is, right because if it was just a record, Honestly,
- 22:04Speaker 1: some people just never get these things right. They call
- 22:06Speaker 1: themselves hip hop has, but they're not even casuals, Like
- 22:11Speaker 1: they can't even listen to a song and break down
- 22:15Speaker 1: some of these things or hear some of these things.
- 22:18Speaker 1: So the video was a smart idea because that way,
- 22:21Speaker 1: visually you can match what's happening with the words and
- 22:25Speaker 1: kind of follow along in a lot of ways. So
- 22:28Speaker 1: it's a very dope way to start this to remind
- 22:32Speaker 1: people that he can rap, right, That's never been in question,
- 22:39Speaker 1: regardless if he wanted to engage in a battle or not,
- 22:43Speaker 1: regardless if I like it or you like it or whatever.
- 22:46Speaker 1: At the end of the day, Jco can write, he
- 22:50Speaker 1: can rap, he can spit. The only thing that we
- 22:54Speaker 1: were saying at that time when it happened was it's
- 22:58Speaker 1: ironic to call yourself the king the greatest rappers. You
- 23:02Speaker 1: better not. And now when the fight's on, you out.
- 23:07Speaker 1: And it wasn't even really a fight, considering you and
- 23:11Speaker 1: this dude and you were cool. It was more it
- 23:13Speaker 1: was going to be like a sparring session. But he
- 23:15Speaker 1: kind of ducked out of it, and probably because of
- 23:18Speaker 1: where things were going. Right, So I don't completely fold
- 23:22Speaker 1: him for not one to engage in that. I just
- 23:26Speaker 1: feel like he has a lot more to offer than
- 23:29Speaker 1: just saying he's the best, and I think at some
- 23:35Speaker 1: point he started to do that more than anything and
- 23:39Speaker 1: got away from why we like him. I mean, the
- 23:41Speaker 1: dog the dude made a song about folding close with
- 23:44Speaker 1: his shorting and I thought it was dope. Some people
- 23:48Speaker 1: made fun of it, but I thought it was dope.
- 23:51Speaker 1: He made a whole album kod that was kind of like,
- 23:56Speaker 1: you know, looking at kids with drugs and everybody over
- 24:00Speaker 1: and addressing that in a positive way. This is what
- 24:05Speaker 1: Ja Cole does. Man, He's a writer, he's an artist,
- 24:08Speaker 1: thinks of concepts. He's a lot like Kendrick Lamar in
- 24:14Speaker 1: that way. So if that's the goal for him here,
- 24:19Speaker 1: I'm all in for it. What do you think about
- 24:22Speaker 1: J Cole's new record and the fall off? Are you
- 24:26Speaker 1: anticipating the album? You know? Are you done with j
- 24:29Speaker 1: Cole because you didn't like what happened with the Battle?
