- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to the Rainy Day rabbit Holes Podcast. Your escape
- 0:05Speaker 1: from the mundane.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Dive into the rich history of the Pacific Northwest with us,
- 0:08Speaker 2: and let your mind wander down the rabbit hole.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Because in the Northwest it's always raining something weird.
- 0:16Speaker 2: I'm Shay and I'm Jody. Let's fall down the rabbit hole.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Let's take a journey. I want you to imagine that
- 0:27Speaker 1: you are perched on the back of a giant golden eagle.
- 0:32Speaker 1: It's smooth feathers gleaming in the sunlight as you soar
- 0:37Speaker 1: high above the majestic rocky mountains. The rugged peaks stretch
- 0:42Speaker 1: out beneath you. There's snow capped summits glistening in the sunlight.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Oh my goodness.
- 0:46Speaker 1: The dense forests and pristine lakes create a breath taking
- 0:50Speaker 1: tapestry of natural beauty. A serene wilderness that seems untouched
- 0:55Speaker 1: by time, the ancestral home of the ute and a
- 0:58Speaker 1: rapa hoe peoples. Amidst this stunning landscape, nestled in a
- 1:03Speaker 1: lush valley, you spot a gleaming white building standing sentinel
- 1:09Speaker 1: above the small town of Estes Park, Colorado.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I forgot to mention we're in Colorado.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I actually don't think I said the word Colorado and
- 1:18Speaker 1: this entire story, you guess were as far because we
- 1:24Speaker 1: are not going to tell you.
- 1:25Speaker 2: I love that view you gave me, because you know
- 1:28Speaker 2: what's funny is I often think what would it be
- 1:31Speaker 2: like to be an eagle and have that view? So
- 1:34Speaker 2: when you took me on the journey, I was like
- 1:35Speaker 2: I was there with you, because I do it all
- 1:36Speaker 2: the time anyway.
- 1:38Speaker 1: It's grand colonial architecture, with its red roof and white facade,
- 1:43Speaker 1: contrasts strikingly against the backdrop of the towering mountains. As
- 1:48Speaker 1: your majestic ride sets you down gently on the pristine
- 1:52Speaker 1: emerald green lawns that rolled gently down from the grand
- 1:55Speaker 1: front porch, you stand in awe of this phenomenal structure.
- 2:00Speaker 1: You begin to walk up the wide walkway, past the
- 2:03Speaker 1: waist high hedge maze, up the front porch stairs, framed
- 2:07Speaker 1: by austere white columns, and into the grand lobby. There
- 2:12Speaker 1: you were greeted by rich, warm woodwork, a lavish carpet, and.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Strangely, a car. A car.
- 2:20Speaker 1: This nineteen ten Stanley steam car was at one time
- 2:25Speaker 1: the fastest automobile in the world. With a mind blowing
- 2:29Speaker 1: for the time top speed of one hundred and twenty
- 2:33Speaker 1: seven miles per hour.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Whoa steam car like out of like a train kind
- 2:38Speaker 2: of technology? Right? That? What did it look like? Was
- 2:41Speaker 2: it a Sedayan? Was it?
- 2:43Speaker 1: So? It was very similar to what you would see
- 2:45Speaker 1: like a model te oh okay, but it had a
- 2:49Speaker 1: steam powered engine and so it burnt gasoline that basically
- 2:53Speaker 1: like fired a boiler.
- 2:56Speaker 2: That was the ending. Okay, so you did still need gasoline?
- 2:59Speaker 2: Yeah yeah? And walk yeah? Okay, very interesting.
- 3:02Speaker 1: This gleaming remnant of the progressive era was the brainchild
- 3:06Speaker 1: of American inventor and entrepreneur Freelan Oscar Stanley, known as f. O. Stanley,
- 3:13Speaker 1: who spent the end of the eighteen hundreds putting his
- 3:15Speaker 1: name on multiple inventions like photographic plates and one of
- 3:20Speaker 1: the first steam powered motor cars in eighteen ninety seven.
- 3:24Speaker 2: What about Stanley steamers? Is that where this comes from? Yes?
- 3:27Speaker 2: The cleaners for real? Yes, I jumped ahead, look at me.
- 3:31Speaker 1: This is what put FO Stanley on the map. And
- 3:33Speaker 1: he even at one time gave President McKinley a tour
- 3:36Speaker 1: of Washington, DC in one of his Stanley steam cars,
- 3:40Speaker 1: the first time a sitting US President had ridden in
- 3:43Speaker 1: a car. What yep, for real? It was in a
- 3:45Speaker 1: steam car.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Yep, so cool. Stanley steamcar. Stanley steamcar.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Stanley was respected and rich, with an adventurous and supportive wife, Flora.
- 3:58Speaker 1: He was on top of the world. However, because life
- 4:04Speaker 1: is an all candy and rides in a steam car, No,
- 4:07Speaker 1: it's not. Their life took a terrible turn in nineteen
- 4:10Speaker 1: oh three. Stanley, who had struggled with symptoms of tuberculosis
- 4:14Speaker 1: for years, had a terrible resurgence of the disease. Sick
- 4:18Speaker 1: and dying, he decided to die in paradise. He and
- 4:21Speaker 1: Flora packed up some belongings and headed out to spend
- 4:24Speaker 1: his last days in Esses Park, Colorado, surrounded by the
- 4:27Speaker 1: vast and mysterious rocky mountains.
- 4:30Speaker 2: It's gorgeous. Oh, it's gorgeous. It's breathtaking. Heartbreakings, it makes
- 4:35Speaker 2: you small. Yeah.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Flora went ahead of her husband by train and stagecoach
- 4:40Speaker 1: to make sure that the summer cabin was ready for
- 4:42Speaker 1: her sick love, and when Stanley arrived, he weighed only
- 4:45Speaker 1: one hundred and eighteen pounds. His doctors gave him three
- 4:50Speaker 1: to six months to live. His doctor promised to visit
- 4:53Speaker 1: him in September, in all likelihood to take his lifeless
- 4:57Speaker 1: corpse back to Massachusetts. But to the doctor's great surprise,
- 5:02Speaker 1: when he came for the corpse, he found it happy,
- 5:04Speaker 1: healthy and hiking five miles per day.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Oh wow, So Estes Park is the cure to tuberculos.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Absolutely apparently. F O.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Stanley decided that summers and the Rockies were the best
- 5:15Speaker 1: thing for his health, so he and Flora set out
- 5:17Speaker 1: to build a home worthy of their status. First they
- 5:19Speaker 1: built a grand home, and then they decided they wanted
- 5:22Speaker 1: to entertain their friends, so they purchased a plot of land.
- 5:28Speaker 1: This is my favorite part from the fourth Earl of
- 5:31Speaker 1: Dunraven and Mount Earl, an Irish nobleman who had you'll
- 5:36Speaker 1: love this claimed fifteen thousand acres of the Estes Valley
- 5:40Speaker 1: under the Homestead Act of eighteen sixty two.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Oh my goodness. Wait, he wasn't the railroad. He was
- 5:48Speaker 2: an Irish nobleman, right, I thought the railroad had to
- 5:50Speaker 2: do that. He'd be part of this. But no, you
- 5:52Speaker 2: can land fraud anywhere. He had intended to turn.
- 5:57Speaker 1: It into a private hunting reserve, but it was pretty
- 6:00Speaker 1: unpopular with the local settlers.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Can you imagine just taking yourself from today where it's
- 6:06Speaker 2: almost impossible to buy yourself just a rambler on a dhhortenome, Yeah,
- 6:12Speaker 2: a lot. No, those are expensive, like I mean, you know,
- 6:15Speaker 2: and back in that day, you're like, here's fifteen hinder
- 6:18Speaker 2: eggers of the most prestigious beautiful well he was the
- 6:22Speaker 2: fourth Earl of Dunraven and Mount Earle. I mean he's
- 6:25Speaker 2: special exactly.
- 6:26Speaker 1: So, after two years of construction, the Stanley Hotel opened
- 6:29Speaker 1: its glittering yellow doors to adventure seekers in nineteen oh nine.
- 6:33Speaker 1: The first guests to arrive in the Mountain Wilderness in
- 6:36Speaker 1: their Stanley steam cars were astonished at what they found.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Expecting a rustic log lodge, they instead found a gleaming
- 6:44Speaker 1: colonial revival gem painted in yellow ochre with white trim,
- 6:49Speaker 1: with Tuscan columns, oval ochre, yellow ochre yeap oval oxye
- 6:53Speaker 1: windows and elaborately turned balusters. Upon opening in nineteen oh nine,
- 6:58Speaker 1: the hotel was alleged to be one of the first
- 7:00Speaker 1: in the country to be fully electrified, although many of
- 7:04Speaker 1: the pictures were dual powered with electricity or gas in
- 7:07Speaker 1: case of a power outage, To power the hotel, Stanley
- 7:10Speaker 1: built the Fall River hydroplant, which brought electricity to the
- 7:13Speaker 1: town of Estes Park for the first time. Every room
- 7:16Speaker 1: had a telephone, and each pair of rooms shared a
- 7:19Speaker 1: bathroom with running water. WHOA, this is luxury absolutely. I
- 7:25Speaker 1: mean even today.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Going in a remote areas you can have to often
- 7:29Speaker 2: share a bathroom or whatever.
- 7:30Speaker 1: You know, all the mcminimons you still share a bathroom
- 7:34Speaker 1: like this place was high and to start. The hotel
- 7:38Speaker 1: was reported to have cost five hundred thousand dollars to
- 7:41Speaker 1: construct a little over seventeen millions a day. Okay, that's
- 7:45Speaker 1: huge h nineteen oh nine. That's a ton of money.
- 7:50Speaker 1: As the nearest train depot was around twenty miles away
- 7:53Speaker 1: in Lions, Stanley had his company produce a fleet of
- 7:56Speaker 1: specially designed steam powered automobiles called Mountain wagons that could
- 8:00Speaker 1: seat twelve passengers at a time to bring his guests
- 8:03Speaker 1: to the hotel. He also built the road from Lyons
- 8:06Speaker 1: to estes Park.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Wow.
- 8:08Speaker 1: The Stanley Hotel was only open during summer months, with
- 8:12Speaker 1: a caretaker in residence during the harsh winter months. In
- 8:16Speaker 1: nineteen eleven, a gas explosion did about ten thousand dollars
- 8:20Speaker 1: worth of damage to the dining room and the rooms above.
- 8:23Speaker 1: A chambermaid who was in the room directly above the
- 8:25Speaker 1: dining room, was in the act of lighting a gas
- 8:27Speaker 1: lamp when the match she held ignited gas that had
- 8:31Speaker 1: escaped from a leaky pipe. The resulting explosion tore a
- 8:35Speaker 1: massive hole on the floor, and plaster and timbers rained
- 8:39Speaker 1: into the dining room below. The chambermaid, Lizzie Lettenberger, was
- 8:44Speaker 1: thrown into the hole and had both ankles broken, but
- 8:47Speaker 1: she didn't fall all the way to the floor, but
- 8:49Speaker 1: instead was caught up by the ruined timbers and was
- 8:52Speaker 1: held there until rescued.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Whoa.
- 8:55Speaker 1: At least ten glass plate windows were shattered, as well
- 8:58Speaker 1: as several doors which were blown from their hinges.
- 9:01Speaker 2: I can't believe she survives this, Yeah, Litttenberg. By the way, lighton.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Well quick aside. Many modern sources claim the woman's name
- 9:10Speaker 1: was elizabeon Well Elizabeth Wilson, but the name Lizzie Lettenberger
- 9:14Speaker 1: comes directly from the Fort Collins Express article about the
- 9:17Speaker 1: explosion on June twenty ninth, nineteen eleven. Wow, so I'm
- 9:21Speaker 1: going with Lizzie Lettenberger. Yeah, I mean Lizzie is just
- 9:23Speaker 1: short for Elizabeth. Maybe Wilson was a married name. Oh right, true,
- 9:27Speaker 1: so maybe Lizzie could be Yeah, I mean Lettenberger may
- 9:30Speaker 1: have been her maiden name and Wilson, but she survived.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Stanley eventually sold the hotel to a private company who
- 9:39Speaker 1: ran it into the ground, and then he repurchased it
- 9:41Speaker 1: out of foreclosure and sold it again. Nice job, buddy,
- 9:45Speaker 1: That's amazing to me.
- 9:48Speaker 2: This guy's got some sort of good karma going on,
- 9:50Speaker 2: Like I'm gonna dive tuberculosis. Oh wait, I'm just gonna
- 9:54Speaker 2: be a.
- 9:55Speaker 1: He didn't die till nineteen forty, that's crazy. And he
- 9:59Speaker 1: is responsible for for ESS's Park being what it is today.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Not only did he build a hydroplant, but he also
- 10:04Speaker 1: helped fund banks and all sorts of different public work.
- 10:08Speaker 2: That's insane because he was kind of dived tuberculos.
- 10:10Speaker 1: He had a vision of turning this into a resort town,
- 10:14Speaker 1: like that's what he wanted.
- 10:15Speaker 2: I mean, it's Estes Park is one of those places
- 10:18Speaker 2: where you think about it and you know you better
- 10:20Speaker 2: show up with some don't know. It doesn't feel it's
- 10:22Speaker 2: not your low class place.
- 10:25Speaker 1: No, it's pretty, it's pretty expensive to stay there, but
- 10:27Speaker 1: it's gorgious, oh man, so gorgeous. So by the nineteen seventies,
- 10:32Speaker 1: long after Stanley's death, the hotel had fallen on hard times.
- 10:35Speaker 1: There was even talk of demolishing it, and it might
- 10:38Speaker 1: have eventually succumbed to the wrecking ball if not for
- 10:41Speaker 1: fortuitous visit by someone special. In nineteen seventy four, American
- 10:48Speaker 1: horror writer Stephen King and his wife Tabitha were summering
- 10:52Speaker 1: and Boulder. While King Stephen King, oh my god, dding
- 10:58Speaker 1: you're being a Jersey in this movie. I've not read
- 11:02Speaker 1: the book, though it's huge. Whilst King worked on a
- 11:06Speaker 1: new book with the working title Dark Shine, which was
- 11:09Speaker 1: set in an amusement park, he just wasn't satisfied with
- 11:12Speaker 1: the setting, and locals in Boulder suggested that the couple
- 11:16Speaker 1: visit as this park for inspiration. And I also suspect
- 11:19Speaker 1: that he was suffering from writer's block at the time.
- 11:21Speaker 1: He's written about it. Yeah, struggles with writer.
- 11:24Speaker 2: It feels like some one of those like extremes, like
- 11:27Speaker 2: a writer's block, can't do anything. Here is a seventy
- 11:30Speaker 2: five thousand page in novel. Right, I'm never it doesn't
- 11:35Speaker 2: seem to ever have an in between plays. I don't know.
- 11:38Speaker 1: As Stephen and Tabitha were checking into the Stanley Hotel,
- 11:41Speaker 1: the rest of the guests were checking out, and the
- 11:44Speaker 1: Kings were the only guests at the hotel as the
- 11:47Speaker 1: next day they were closing up for the winter. They
- 11:50Speaker 1: stayed in Room two seventeen, which many stars to say
- 11:53Speaker 1: was the room that was damaged by the nineteen eleven
- 11:56Speaker 1: gas explosion, and Stephen wondered the lonely corridor with their
- 12:00Speaker 1: peeling paint and flickering lights. He felt inspiration creeping back
- 12:05Speaker 1: in and thought it was the perfect setting for a
- 12:08Speaker 1: ghost story. That night, he dreamed that his three year
- 12:12Speaker 1: old son was running through the corridors, looking back over
- 12:16Speaker 1: his shoulder, eyes wide, screaming he was being chased by
- 12:20Speaker 1: a fire hose. King jerked awake in terror, lit a
- 12:24Speaker 1: cigarette and looked out the windows at the Rockies, and
- 12:27Speaker 1: by the time the cigarette was finished, he had the
- 12:30Speaker 1: bones of the book The Shining firmly set in his mind.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Oh, that's insane.
- 12:35Speaker 1: In this story, Jack Torrence, who was looking for a
- 12:38Speaker 1: fresh start after a series of events caused by his
- 12:40Speaker 1: alcohol abuse had left him jobless and he brought his
- 12:44Speaker 1: family to the Overlook Hotel in the vast Rocky Mountains
- 12:47Speaker 1: to work as the winter caretaker and work on his play.
- 12:51Speaker 1: As he had been suffering from writer's block. He thought
- 12:54Speaker 1: that the isolation of the job and location would help
- 12:57Speaker 1: him find inspiration. As the Tail unfolds, ghosts and an
- 13:02Speaker 1: evil power in the hotel drive Jack to madness and
- 13:06Speaker 1: amplify his young son Danny's burgeoning psychic power. If you're
- 13:10Speaker 1: a fan of Stanley Kubrick's version of the movie, you
- 13:13Speaker 1: won't recognize the exterior of the Stanley Hotel as it
- 13:16Speaker 1: wasn't used.
- 13:17Speaker 2: For the movie. And here's how we tie.
- 13:20Speaker 1: The Grand Colinal Revival architecture was deemed by Kubrick to
- 13:24Speaker 1: be too pretty and light for the dark atmosphere he wanted. Instead,
- 13:28Speaker 1: interior shots were on a sound stage built in London,
- 13:32Speaker 1: and exterior shots were the Timberline Lodge at Mount Hood, Oregon,
- 13:37Speaker 1: which I spent a summer exploring because my dad did
- 13:41Speaker 1: redid all the plumbing. What one, you're well, Well, we
- 13:45Speaker 1: didn't spend the summer at Timberline Lodge. We spent the
- 13:47Speaker 1: summer in Government Camp, which is the little town he
- 13:50Speaker 1: redid all the plumbing.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Yeah, that's amazing. Timberline is so cool. It is like
- 13:54Speaker 2: I've seen pictures. I No, I'd almost rather go there
- 13:58Speaker 2: than the Stanley Hotel, just because of it's closer the well, yeah,
- 14:02Speaker 2: there's that, but like I don't know, I feel the Yeah, anyway,
- 14:06Speaker 2: it's very looking at the pictures. I feel it more
- 14:08Speaker 2: than Stanley.
- 14:09Speaker 1: I sense a couple's road trip happening this winter.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Oh, I feel like we're going to have to shay
- 14:14Speaker 2: do a competition between the Stanley and the It's just
- 14:18Speaker 2: go stay at both. But yeah, that's what I'm saying,
- 14:20Speaker 2: and then we can do a comparative review. I love it.
- 14:22Speaker 2: I think this is a work project and we'll write
- 14:24Speaker 2: it off. Yeah.
- 14:26Speaker 1: So you might recognize some themes in King's book from
- 14:29Speaker 1: the history of the hotel, like the gas explosion, the
- 14:31Speaker 1: hotel being shut down for the winter with just a caretaker,
- 14:34Speaker 1: as well as actual events from King's own life. He
- 14:38Speaker 1: has been frank about his struggles with writer's block and alcoholism,
- 14:41Speaker 1: as well as violence towards his family when drunk and high.
- 14:45Speaker 2: King yes, oh wow, I didn't know that part. He
- 14:47Speaker 2: claims that he barely remembers writing much of the book.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Ten years after the publication of the book, Tabitha dumped
- 14:54Speaker 2: all of King's drug and alcohol paraphernalia in front of him,
- 14:57Speaker 2: and King started the journey towards sobriety and it's been
- 15:00Speaker 2: sober ever since. Holy How, But Stephen King's personal demons
- 15:05Speaker 2: weren't the only ghosts to haunt the place ever since
- 15:08Speaker 2: the gas explosion of nineteen eleven, guests have reported spooky phenomena.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Some guests and staff claim that they see the ghosts
- 15:15Speaker 2: of Lizzie in Room two seventeen, and that she sometimes
- 15:19Speaker 2: helpfully tidies up the room as they sleep, with their
- 15:22Speaker 2: clothes mysteriously folded and suitcases organized. I would like that
- 15:25Speaker 2: ghost to come home, I was singing, when a handy ghost.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I love this ghost? Does it walk around going?
- 15:34Speaker 1: One couple told a staff member that their bed was
- 15:37Speaker 1: made around them in the night. What unmarried couples have
- 15:42Speaker 1: reported a chili presence in bed with them as they slept,
- 15:45Speaker 1: specifically unmarried couples.
- 15:47Speaker 2: We was in this is a known We were.
- 15:50Speaker 1: There in twenty fourteen and we were not yet married,
- 15:53Speaker 1: but I didn't we that was before rig got a
- 15:56Speaker 1: seapap and so I had to have them bring in
- 15:59Speaker 1: a rollaway bed that I could sleep on in the
- 16:01Speaker 1: other room. So the ghost was like, no, I was
- 16:04Speaker 1: in the same room, but I was on a rollaway
- 16:05Speaker 1: bed because I couldn't sleep in the same bed as
- 16:07Speaker 1: my husband because the snoring was so bad. So the
- 16:09Speaker 1: ghost was like, this is fine, this is We're in
- 16:11Speaker 1: separate beds. Yes, I am, well, this is fine. I'm proof,
- 16:14Speaker 1: I approve. So the ghost of fo Stanley has been
- 16:18Speaker 1: spotted at the bar in Billiard's room, and sometimes mysterious
- 16:22Speaker 1: piano music will drift through the halls, as if Flora
- 16:25Speaker 1: is at.
- 16:25Speaker 2: The keys of the grand Piano. Wow.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Some of the hotel's tour guides believe there is a
- 16:31Speaker 1: child haunting the property who plays with guests hair. On
- 16:36Speaker 1: the fourth floor, sometimes children's laughter can be heard. There
- 16:40Speaker 1: is an on site pet cemetery where some of the
- 16:43Speaker 1: past owner's pets have been laid to rest. A friendly
- 16:46Speaker 1: golden retriever named Cassie is said to still deliver newspapers
- 16:50Speaker 1: and scratch it doors to be let in se There
- 16:53Speaker 1: is also a network of underground caves that staff used
- 16:57Speaker 1: to use to travel around the hotel out of sight
- 17:00Speaker 1: of the guests. The ghost of a pastry chef is
- 17:03Speaker 1: said to haunt these caves, and sometimes you can smell
- 17:06Speaker 1: baked goods down there. Room four oh one is said
- 17:09Speaker 1: to be the most haunted in the hotel, and some
- 17:12Speaker 1: women have claimed they were inappropriately touched while standing in
- 17:15Speaker 1: the closet. So now other women make reservations. I was like,
- 17:20Speaker 1: I'll go stay there. Come, hey, gus, I'm in the
- 17:24Speaker 1: closet under the bed.
- 17:27Speaker 2: This time. Hey, I'm in the bathtub. Come inappropriately touch me.
- 17:33Speaker 2: I'm here for you.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Is it inappropriate if you're asking for Yes, it's just consensual.
- 17:41Speaker 1: It's consensual. Oh wait, maybe that's not fun for the ghost.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Maybe that's the point.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Yeah, or sche goes there just begging for it and
- 17:48Speaker 2: there's no action because they're down there torturing. Somebody wants
- 17:51Speaker 2: none of it. You're coming in with the wrong the
- 17:55Speaker 2: wrong perspective and expectations to shoot their Oh she's too eager.
- 18:01Speaker 2: You just made ghost raight funny. Oh God, we're terrible.
- 18:05Speaker 2: We're gonna be canceled. I'm gonna cancel me. That's wrong. Okay, back, Okay,
- 18:17Speaker 2: I'm this I'm only on one and a half issue. Oh,
- 18:20Speaker 2: my god. Okay.
- 18:22Speaker 1: There have also been many reports of So the thing
- 18:25Speaker 1: I'm thinking about while doing this is like, I have
- 18:27Speaker 1: all this spooky music to play under this.
- 18:29Speaker 2: But then when we're going talking about that to you,
- 18:31Speaker 2: when I'm writing my stories, and I should put notes
- 18:33Speaker 2: like shape put this kind of music here, because I
- 18:35Speaker 2: hear it in the background while he's telling it.
- 18:37Speaker 1: There have also been many reports of strange sounds coming
- 18:40Speaker 1: from the ceiling of Room four twenty eight, like furniture
- 18:43Speaker 1: being moved in the night, despite the fact that there
- 18:45Speaker 1: are no rooms above it. Oh ever, right, like yeah,
- 18:50Speaker 1: so how's that? Okay, she's an empty attic cup there
- 18:53Speaker 1: play more. I was lucky enough that my dear husband
- 18:57Speaker 1: indulged me to fulfill a lifelong dream of staying at
- 19:00Speaker 1: the Stanley Hotel. I have been a Stephen King fan
- 19:03Speaker 1: since I was about eleven, when I found a copy
- 19:06Speaker 1: of Kujo in my mom's closet, which I hid in
- 19:09Speaker 1: my room to read when my parents weren't paying attention.
- 19:12Speaker 2: This is hilarious, Like Kujo was your like porn? Like
- 19:17Speaker 2: you had that that? Did you put it between your mattress? Dirty? Well?
- 19:22Speaker 1: I remember there was like a some very dirty scene.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Oh for sure, for sure like the guy yeah I
- 19:29Speaker 2: read Cujo is a yeah as well.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Sorry you guys didn't see the hand movement I was making.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I was trying not to.
- 19:34Speaker 2: The guy was doing something with his hand waist high. Yes.
- 19:39Speaker 1: In twenty fourteen, since we were in Colorado for the
- 19:41Speaker 1: Great American Beer Festival, I convinced my hubby to make
- 19:44Speaker 1: the drive up to ESS's Park. The hotel was everything
- 19:47Speaker 1: I dreamed of, rich, sumptuous interiors, gorgeous views, and even
- 19:52Speaker 1: a hedge maze, although at the time it was only
- 19:55Speaker 1: me high, but it was still charming.
- 19:58Speaker 2: I'm terrified of that head. Well, when it's only me high, right,
- 20:02Speaker 2: I can take that. I won't even go. So I
- 20:04Speaker 2: won't go to corn Maze. And last couple of years
- 20:07Speaker 2: ago I went and corn Maze No, heck no, I'm
- 20:10Speaker 2: I'm in there and I'm ready to rip out every
- 20:13Speaker 2: corn Stock. So remember the day that we were talking
- 20:16Speaker 2: about paddleboarding on the Sound and the outer kept going.
- 20:20Speaker 2: She's like, no, it's fine, it's fine. I'm like getting
- 20:22Speaker 2: angrier and angrier, and she's like, I think we had
- 20:23Speaker 2: our just had our first fight. And I'm like, no,
- 20:25Speaker 2: this is this is fight or flight. I'm a fighter,
- 20:30Speaker 2: and so like I'm like, I want to rip those
- 20:32Speaker 2: corn stocks out. I want to throw them. I want
- 20:35Speaker 2: to get the heck out of there, and yeah, I
- 20:38Speaker 2: want to destroy the corn.
- 20:40Speaker 1: I love a corn maze, but I have a weird
- 20:41Speaker 1: thing where I actually if I don't have somewhere to be,
- 20:44Speaker 1: I don't mind being lost because I like exploration.
- 20:47Speaker 2: So like when i'm I have to be able to
- 20:49Speaker 2: see though I can't see out of there, and then
- 20:51Speaker 2: I get real anxious and I'm ready to I'm ready
- 20:54Speaker 2: to pull stocks and run, and I have to literally
- 20:56Speaker 2: talk myself like, don't be crazy. They going to calm
- 21:01Speaker 2: ambulance for you if you really pull these cornstocks and
- 21:03Speaker 2: run out in the middle of the fall festival. Well
- 21:06Speaker 2: now I'm a little sad because I was hoping we
- 21:08Speaker 2: could go to corn maze together. I'm sorry. I promised
- 21:13Speaker 2: myself I would never do it again, because I literally
- 21:15Speaker 2: have to talk myself down to not, okay, rid those up.
- 21:19Speaker 1: I don't want to cause you more stress, so I'll
- 21:21Speaker 1: just take my mom.
- 21:22Speaker 2: I'm literally the most sane person until I'm not, and
- 21:25Speaker 2: the then the most insane person.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Well, the hedge maze at the Stanley Hotel. I think
- 21:33Speaker 1: now is about to hear so you'll be fine.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Oh really, it's only made of that far. Damn Well,
- 21:39Speaker 2: the last pictures I saw it looked yeah, it looked
- 21:41Speaker 2: like it. So now, okay, so you're telling me that
- 21:44Speaker 2: what year was it? Twenty fourteen? These were like knee
- 21:46Speaker 2: high because the maze hedges in the movie, but it
- 21:50Speaker 2: wasn't at the Stanley No, No, I know so that
- 21:52Speaker 2: so are they like trying to recreate that a little bit?
- 21:55Speaker 2: Is that what they're doing? And they didn't start till yeah,
- 21:57Speaker 2: twenty ten. It's going to take till twenty seventy two
- 22:02Speaker 2: for these things too over your head where you can
- 22:04Speaker 2: write last to actually reflect the movie version.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Here's the thing too, When you go through a hedge
- 22:10Speaker 1: maze that's only me high, you feel pretty dumb, right
- 22:13Speaker 1: because you're just like walking around and patterning.
- 22:16Speaker 2: I can see everything.
- 22:17Speaker 1: I'm like, it's like I could see that this next
- 22:20Speaker 1: place is not the way out, because.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Maybe this is what I need to train myself through
- 22:26Speaker 2: to stop panicking.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Well, just start, let's let's build a hedge maze in
- 22:30Speaker 1: my yard.
- 22:31Speaker 2: I need to do sense. There's only a few things
- 22:33Speaker 2: that I'm like, absolutely not. Everything else i'm braved with.
- 22:35Speaker 2: These are a couple of things, and when i'm absolutely not,
- 22:38Speaker 2: I'm absolutely not.
- 22:38Speaker 1: There's probably some places that have like kitty hedge mazes
- 22:41Speaker 1: where you could have your head over the entire noise.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Maybe if they put arrows of which way to go. Well,
- 22:47Speaker 1: you know now they do app maps. Okay, now that's
- 22:50Speaker 1: might show you exactly where you are.
- 22:51Speaker 2: That might help me. As long as I have somebody
- 22:53Speaker 2: with me that reads maps, that might help me.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Well, because it'll show you where you are in the shape.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Remember they're always say shay, yeah, yeah, and it has
- 23:01Speaker 1: your location.
- 23:01Speaker 2: That would probably help me. I as soon as I
- 23:04Speaker 2: don't know where I'm at, I'm ready to pull corn.
- 23:07Speaker 2: I won't do.
- 23:09Speaker 1: I won't do to you what I do to my
- 23:11Speaker 1: mother and my other friends, which just not let them
- 23:13Speaker 1: look at the map until we are well and lost.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Because I like the challenge. It's all about the challenge.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Back to the story, Yes, so that's my favorite favorite
- 23:22Speaker 2: line for us.
- 23:24Speaker 1: So the Hedge Park, even though only the high was
- 23:26Speaker 1: still charming. So I decided to do my favorite thing,
- 23:29Speaker 1: and that's to take a beer for a walk.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Oh, yes, this is actually that, or a high noon
- 23:34Speaker 2: or a margarita, or you gotta take your drink for
- 23:37Speaker 2: a while. This squirrel is naughty.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Look, no, I'm adventurous with alcohol.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Yeah. So she tried to do that with me once,
- 23:45Speaker 2: but to give me good training. And then I walked
- 23:47Speaker 2: around with my Pina coladas showing to everyone, and she's shamy.
- 23:50Speaker 2: She's like, oh my god, I can't believe you did that.
- 23:52Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm not an expert at breaking all the rules.
- 23:56Speaker 1: That was San Francisco, and look, there were people shooting
- 24:00Speaker 1: up the alley the g I cared about where my
- 24:03Speaker 1: cam was facing, Like, if you can shoot up in
- 24:05Speaker 1: the alley, I could have into the Vibrator Museum with
- 24:09Speaker 1: your Pina Klada showing.
- 24:11Speaker 2: But I could park a box on the side of
- 24:14Speaker 2: the street on the sidewalk and shoot up Heroin and
- 24:18Speaker 2: take it dumb. Yeah, okay, yeah, those all those things
- 24:21Speaker 2: are acceptable. When I took my beer for a walk
- 24:26Speaker 2: to explore the hallways, because of the busy carpet and wallpaper,
- 24:30Speaker 2: combined with the somewhat dim lighting and length of the hallways,
- 24:34Speaker 2: the halls on the upper floor appeared to move and
- 24:37Speaker 2: undulate as you watched, like this is your experience. We
- 24:41Speaker 2: were there during the middle of the week, so there
- 24:43Speaker 2: weren't a ton of guests, and the upper floor in
- 24:46Speaker 2: the middle of the day was there was like nobody around,
- 24:49Speaker 2: and so I took my beer for a walk up there.
- 24:51Speaker 2: It's is long, and the upper floor was servants rooms before,
- 24:56Speaker 2: and so it's a much more narrow, unadorned hallway, but
- 25:01Speaker 2: it's really long. It runs the length of the building,
- 25:05Speaker 2: and so when you go up and you look down
- 25:07Speaker 2: the hallway, the carpet is that crazy patterned carpet, and
- 25:11Speaker 2: there was crazy pattern wallpaper, and the lights on that
- 25:14Speaker 2: floor were really dim, and as you look down this
- 25:19Speaker 2: long hallway, it's just like a trick of light and
- 25:22Speaker 2: perception and straight. Yes, it almost appeared to expand and
- 25:28Speaker 2: contract as I watched. Oh that's so crazy. This happened
- 25:31Speaker 2: to me once in Friday Harbor. And the reason I
- 25:34Speaker 2: asked if it was straight is it kind of did
- 25:36Speaker 2: like the zigzag thing, and then the way that the
- 25:38Speaker 2: carpet shapes on the car it was just really weird
- 25:42Speaker 2: to walk through. So that's what I was thinking. Yeah,
- 25:45Speaker 2: you from just basing off my experience, how weird that
- 25:48Speaker 2: is that? Yeah, it was weird.
- 25:50Speaker 1: I just was looking down the hallway and it almost
- 25:52Speaker 1: appeared to expand because.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Especially knowing that like story behind the shopping right so
- 25:58Speaker 2: that you're standing there, Yeah, feeling that knowing the story
- 26:01Speaker 2: behind the shining house scared. I was just feeling good, oh,
- 26:05Speaker 2: because I had had a beer before, just one. So
- 26:08Speaker 2: I was a couple of beers in and taking my
- 26:10Speaker 2: beer for a walk, and I was like, I told,
- 26:12Speaker 2: take your beer for a walk. We're doing that from
- 26:14Speaker 2: now on. We're taking our beers for walks. We're not
- 26:16Speaker 2: just going We're doing it for the beer. It's because
- 26:19Speaker 2: we're kind. He not knows that that's what I normally do. No,
- 26:21Speaker 2: Like I just thought I was going for a walk
- 26:23Speaker 2: with a beer. Now I'm being kind to my beer
- 26:25Speaker 2: and showing it the world before I drink it.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Well, that poor beer has only known the place it
- 26:30Speaker 1: was brewed and then canned, and then the grocery store
- 26:32Speaker 1: and probably like a in.
- 26:34Speaker 2: A keg somewhere else. I know, dark hasn't seen the world. No,
- 26:38Speaker 2: I take it for walk. I had no idea you
- 26:40Speaker 2: were so was that called altruistic? Yeah?
- 26:42Speaker 1: Thank you so rich had decided he wanted to take
- 26:45Speaker 1: a nap, and I was like, first off, he will
- 26:48Speaker 1: take naps when I'm like, we have such a limited
- 26:51Speaker 1: time in this place, I can sleep later.
- 26:53Speaker 2: Right, I'm not. There's vacations where you go to rest, relax, nap,
- 26:56Speaker 2: and there's vacations where you go to see things and
- 26:58Speaker 2: naps are not allowed.
- 27:00Speaker 1: We were in this room for one night, and it's
- 27:02Speaker 1: not cheap.
- 27:03Speaker 2: See this riots probably three hundred and fifty.
- 27:06Speaker 1: I think it was only around two hundred at the time,
- 27:09Speaker 1: but still that was a lot of money. And I
- 27:12Speaker 1: was like, we only have one night here. I am
- 27:13Speaker 1: taking full advantage of each of it. So he napped,
- 27:16Speaker 1: I took my beer for a walk, and I was like,
- 27:18Speaker 1: I got to explore this. I'm like, this is where
- 27:20Speaker 1: the shining started. Like right, this is where it was.
- 27:24Speaker 1: This is the way I gotta go. This has special
- 27:27Speaker 1: significance for anybody who's a fan of Stephens.
- 27:29Speaker 2: This is on my nomad plan.
- 27:31Speaker 1: I am such a fan of Stephen King. I will
- 27:33Speaker 1: read every single one of his books, even if they're terrible,
- 27:36Speaker 1: because sometimes they are. He's put out some piles of
- 27:39Speaker 1: dog poop, but I still read them and I still
- 27:42Speaker 1: love most of them.
- 27:42Speaker 2: I wonder if Keith thinks that way and doesn't say
- 27:45Speaker 2: anything because I don't. Is he also a huge Stephen
- 27:48Speaker 2: king Ham? Oh? Everything he has not read knocked about that?
- 27:51Speaker 2: Now you guys have talked about it. We talked about
- 27:53Speaker 2: it on the way home from Oregon when we went
- 27:55Speaker 2: to the Davidian, and I was so tired. I think, yeah,
- 27:58Speaker 2: you guys talked about the your love and the fact
- 28:01Speaker 2: that you started at ten or eleven reading this. Keith
- 28:03Speaker 2: and I need to start a Stephen king podcast together.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's a good one. That's a good idea.
- 28:10Speaker 2: All the King tapes. So yeah.
- 28:12Speaker 1: So I took my beer for a walk, so wandered
- 28:14Speaker 1: up and then in the stairwells. This was really interesting.
- 28:19Speaker 1: They would sometimes hold these like unexpected cold spots and
- 28:22Speaker 1: it was like eighty five outside because Colorado is hot
- 28:26Speaker 1: until it's not. It's like it's like, well, Colorado is
- 28:31Speaker 1: the place. I love those videos where they're like a
- 28:34Speaker 1: typical Colorado fall day. You wake up and there's snow
- 28:38Speaker 1: on the ground because it's snow all night, and then
- 28:40Speaker 1: it's eighty five degrees. It's sunny and beautiful in your
- 28:43Speaker 1: white snow, or you go outside and there's snow out
- 28:47Speaker 1: and you go grab your ski gear and by the
- 28:49Speaker 1: time you get in it's eighty Back outside it's eighty
- 28:51Speaker 1: five degrees.
- 28:53Speaker 2: You start at the top and it's powdery. By the
- 28:57Speaker 2: time you get to the blot, you're water skiing. You'd
- 29:00Speaker 2: need a power boat to get you to the lawn.
- 29:04Speaker 2: That's Colorado.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Yes, So it was like eighty five degrees outside, and
- 29:08Speaker 1: I don't think that the hotel had air conditioning, so.
- 29:11Speaker 2: I'm sure it wasn't built with it for sure.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Right, so there was these unexplained cold spots in the stairwells.
- 29:17Speaker 1: But the spookiest adventure was the ghost tour. So there's oh,
- 29:21Speaker 1: they do a tour. They do so there's several accessory
- 29:24Speaker 1: buildings to the main lodge. So they had built smaller
- 29:27Speaker 1: buildings and this one the lodge. So there's the main
- 29:31Speaker 1: hotel and there's the lodge, and the lodge had some
- 29:33Speaker 1: extra rooms and then also had the theater, so that's
- 29:35Speaker 1: where they would hold events. So that's where this ghost
- 29:38Speaker 1: tour was. So after the sun had sunk below the rockies,
- 29:41Speaker 1: we made our way over to the smaller building to
- 29:44Speaker 1: the side of the main hotel, which holds the theater
- 29:46Speaker 1: in the event space. The tour guide told us that
- 29:49Speaker 1: the spirits of several children are said to haunt this building.
- 29:54Speaker 1: She handed out dumb dumbs lollipops you know those are
- 29:56Speaker 1: those little tiny ones to all of the guests and
- 29:59Speaker 1: command added them to balance the candy on their palm
- 30:03Speaker 1: with the stick pointing up.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Oh, then like to balance it like up, yeah, okay,
- 30:08Speaker 2: It wasn't hard because they have the wrapper right, so
- 30:11Speaker 2: you make it flat on the bottom, so it was fine,
- 30:13Speaker 2: like if you just are still, it'll stay up. Then
- 30:16Speaker 2: she spoke to the children.
- 30:18Speaker 1: My husband got a weird look in his eye and
- 30:21Speaker 1: said that all of the hairs on the arm holding
- 30:23Speaker 1: the candy were now standing up. And I looked and
- 30:25Speaker 1: they were, but not the other arm. Then the candy
- 30:29Speaker 1: was knocked over, even though he was perfectly still like
- 30:32Speaker 1: fasters though it just fell over. He was slowly just no,
- 30:36Speaker 1: it just got knocked over. So he was definitely spooked.
- 30:40Speaker 1: We were taken through the building, most of it dark,
- 30:42Speaker 1: and into the cave like tunnels below. Here it was
- 30:45Speaker 1: suggested that we take some pictures. Sure enough, my camera
- 30:48Speaker 1: screen was full of orbs. Now, that could have just
- 30:52Speaker 1: been light balancing off of particles and dust in the air,
- 30:54Speaker 1: but it certainly added to the spooky atmosphere. Those dusted
- 30:58Speaker 1: particles in your eyeballs. Yes, dusts of particles? What particles
- 31:04Speaker 1: of dust?
- 31:05Speaker 2: Say? I'm on my one and a half mad dog mimosa,
- 31:10Speaker 2: So I didn't even notice you said.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Sorry, I think I'm slightly dyslexic. The next morning, Rich
- 31:17Speaker 1: and I sat at the hotel's gorgeous bar enjoying a
- 31:22Speaker 1: morning bloody Mary.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Okay, so, now in the movie The Shining and he's
- 31:25Speaker 2: sitting at that bar, do they replicate that? Well no, no,
- 31:28Speaker 2: So does the inside of that actual facility look anything
- 31:32Speaker 2: like them? Okay, not a thing, got it? So this
- 31:35Speaker 2: bar was very cool.
- 31:37Speaker 1: So the Stanley Hotel, if you look at pictures of it,
- 31:39Speaker 1: it is set into the into the mountain. So it's
- 31:43Speaker 1: like the backdrop of the hotel is just rocks, but
- 31:46Speaker 1: it is literally set into Oh. Okay, so the bar
- 31:49Speaker 1: is set into the rock. So part of the bar's
- 31:52Speaker 1: wall is just granite stone.
- 31:54Speaker 2: So that's the outside, yeah, is on the inside, there's
- 31:57Speaker 2: actually no wall there, It's just built into this. Yeah.
- 32:00Speaker 1: So that's part of the part of the bar, and
- 32:02Speaker 1: then the other one opens up to like that a courtyard.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Fantastic, it's gorgeous. Oh my god. So we're sitting there
- 32:09Speaker 2: at the bar.
- 32:09Speaker 1: I'm enjoying this very elaborate, expensive bloody mary that's got
- 32:13Speaker 1: bacon and pickled green beans and like all that stuff.
- 32:17Speaker 2: I just have cheddar And.
- 32:19Speaker 1: No it didn't have that. No, but the bacon was amazing.
- 32:24Speaker 2: And was it dipped into the bloody Oh that's the best. Yes,
- 32:27Speaker 2: it was so good. And so he's in milk or
- 32:29Speaker 2: bacon in your right, but you're merry either way.
- 32:33Speaker 1: My husband's phone was sitting face down on the bar,
- 32:37Speaker 1: and this was before all of the AI Google Assistant
- 32:41Speaker 1: Voice stuff.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Twice it's a flip phone or was this an app phone?
- 32:44Speaker 1: No, this was a this was a smartphone smartphone, but
- 32:47Speaker 1: this was before that. You did like the Hey Google
- 32:51Speaker 1: stuff twenty fourteen, Hey Siri. Yeah, all of a sudden,
- 32:54Speaker 1: without being touched, his camera and flash just started going off.
- 32:58Speaker 1: The bartender was right there and he's like, oh, that
- 33:00Speaker 1: sort of thing happens all the time here.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, So did Rich run like I'm picturing
- 33:06Speaker 2: at this point this very like we were like and
- 33:10Speaker 2: so of course me being like the grand skeptic, and
- 33:13Speaker 2: I was wondering how this is gonna say out, Well.
- 33:15Speaker 1: We're in the bedrock, so there's probably some sort of
- 33:19Speaker 1: like magnetic forces or something like that that's just causing
- 33:22Speaker 1: electronics to misbehave. And like the orbs on the camera,
- 33:27Speaker 1: that's particles of destiny air. I mean, that's what most
- 33:30Speaker 1: of the time it is.
- 33:31Speaker 2: But the I mean I've looked and I've seen no
- 33:34Speaker 2: particles of justin the air with my eyes and then
- 33:37Speaker 2: also on my camera. Okay, this is again why we
- 33:42Speaker 2: need to be over record our sessions. Shade just like
- 33:48Speaker 2: you are so ridiculous looked at me.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Everyone missed that look on her face, Like my head
- 33:55Speaker 1: was be reil right now. So although pricey at the time,
- 34:03Speaker 1: it was about two hundred dollars a night and now
- 34:05Speaker 1: can range from two hundred and fifty to four hundred
- 34:07Speaker 1: and fifty.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Yeah, that's so I figured it was a memorable experience.
- 34:11Speaker 1: F O. Stanley created a masterpiece and made the town
- 34:14Speaker 1: of Estes Park the amazing place it is today.
- 34:18Speaker 2: It's not somewhere you're gonna go find that anywhere in America. Yeah,
- 34:22Speaker 2: a gorgeous town. It's popular year round, whether you believe
- 34:26Speaker 2: in the paranormal or not. It will charm and enchant
- 34:29Speaker 2: even the most skeptical of guests, even you, even me.
- 34:33Speaker 2: I mean I felt some spookiness there. I can't lie
- 34:36Speaker 2: like you're gonna always look for the answer that isn't paranormal.
- 34:41Speaker 2: But you also felt it.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Yeah, the weird undulating hallway, even though it's probably just
- 34:48Speaker 1: you know, your brain processing and visual stuff, that was creepy.
- 34:52Speaker 2: It was really creepy. Yeah. Well I've seen it in
- 34:56Speaker 2: you know, just the geometrical stuff, and not in a
- 34:59Speaker 2: haunted scary place. I imagine putting that all together in
- 35:02Speaker 2: one place would Yeah. Yeah, And I mean I know
- 35:06Speaker 2: I'm a skeptic, but I still.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Enjoy, Right, that's obvious like exploring it. Like even last night,
- 35:11Speaker 1: When have we gone through this entire thing without me
- 35:14Speaker 1: mentioning pretty gritty tours?
- 35:19Speaker 2: Not on this episode? Did we miss it on this episode?
- 35:22Speaker 2: So we do record multiple on one day. I know
- 35:26Speaker 2: we've mentioned him in Knocking, but I think we missed
- 35:28Speaker 2: in this episode. That would be a shame.
- 35:30Speaker 1: Well, hey, Chris, Chris, he's not a patron but I'll
- 35:37Speaker 1: just send in this episode straight. Yeah, I should just
- 35:40Speaker 1: give a Patreon membership for free because he is my boss.
- 35:44Speaker 2: That sounds weird. Are you looking for a bonus ray?
- 35:49Speaker 2: So he took us.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Last night, I was helping lead tours of Stadium High
- 35:54Speaker 1: School for their twenty fifth anniversary of the Ten Things
- 35:57Speaker 1: I Hate About You movie, which was filmed there. And
- 36:00Speaker 1: after we help the tours, me and another one of
- 36:03Speaker 1: the helpers was with Chris and he's like, hey, you
- 36:06Speaker 1: guys want to see something cool because neither of us
- 36:10Speaker 1: ladies had been all the way down the steam tunnel,
- 36:12Speaker 1: because whenever we'd been on a tour, we were always
- 36:14Speaker 1: at the caboose. And you're like, okay, well I'm in
- 36:16Speaker 1: a tunnel.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Great.
- 36:18Speaker 1: And when I give the tours, because I've only ever
- 36:21Speaker 1: been in charge of the basement in the attic, I
- 36:23Speaker 1: haven't done the full tour yet, but you're supposed to
- 36:26Speaker 1: tell them that when they hit the ducting.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Wait did you say basement in the attic? Basement and attic?
- 36:31Speaker 2: Oh okay, sorry, I was like wait, I got stuck there,
- 36:34Speaker 2: like how does that work?
- 36:35Speaker 1: And sorry? So there's a piece of ducting that to
- 36:40Speaker 1: continue down the tunnel, you would have to basically crawl
- 36:43Speaker 1: under it. Like it is low enough that I was
- 36:45Speaker 1: able to crab walk like like duck walk. Claustrophobic.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Are you going in here? No?
- 36:51Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I thought, But we had never been down there,
- 36:54Speaker 1: so he's like, let's go. So we head down this
- 36:58Speaker 1: tunnel and it's just the three of us and crawl
- 37:01Speaker 1: underneath this duct work and then it dead ends where
- 37:07Speaker 1: there used to be a fresh air exchange but it's
- 37:08Speaker 1: been concreted up and sitting on top of a piece
- 37:12Speaker 1: of pipe is you know, the teeth model, like chattery
- 37:16Speaker 1: teeth but like plaster, but all the teeth are pointy.
- 37:20Speaker 2: Oh it's up there.
- 37:22Speaker 1: Uh huh oh, it's so creepy.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 37:25Speaker 1: So then we have to turn around and there's a
- 37:29Speaker 1: little ladder to go up to a utility room. But Emily,
- 37:34Speaker 1: the other guide, she's like, can I be in the middle.
- 37:36Speaker 1: So I'm at the back and there's no light back there.
- 37:39Speaker 1: So Chris had had his flashlight out, but then he
- 37:41Speaker 1: goes up the ladder first, so I am back here.
- 37:44Speaker 2: It's filtered out by the time it gets to you.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Bought in the pitch black and I joked, Sure, I'll
- 37:50Speaker 1: go last. I'll be the person that gets pulled back
- 37:52Speaker 1: into the darkness. And I freaked myself out so bad
- 37:55Speaker 1: that it ran. That's my thing, Like, I can I
- 38:00Speaker 1: freak myself out so much I don't believe, but part
- 38:03Speaker 1: of my reptile brain believes, yeah, right, So that's where
- 38:06Speaker 1: I'm like, that's the part of me that gets that
- 38:09Speaker 1: like adrenaline thrill because my reptile brain is like, oh, yes,
- 38:14Speaker 1: it's all true, but my logical brain is like, no,
- 38:16Speaker 1: there's an explanation for all of it. And then they
- 38:19Speaker 1: they wore And when I'm in the dark, I can
- 38:22Speaker 1: freak myself out if I watch a really scary movie
- 38:24Speaker 1: by myself at night, and then I will be freaked
- 38:26Speaker 1: out the rest of the night and see figures in
- 38:29Speaker 1: the doorways and windows and especially UFO stuff.
- 38:33Speaker 2: I use. I just have made a rule to stop
- 38:36Speaker 2: watching those things when I'm by myself, because then, like
- 38:39Speaker 2: you start seeing yeah, I don't, and there's a problem.
- 38:41Speaker 2: I really don't anymore. I used to love horror movies.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Oh yes, I'm at twelve thirty. I mean, we were
- 38:47Speaker 2: sneaking into these things. That was our thing. Scary movies,
- 38:49Speaker 2: and then my husband raised our daughters on it, like
- 38:52Speaker 2: they would go to these I don't care remember what
- 38:56Speaker 2: they're called anyway, I mean it was their thing. I
- 38:58Speaker 2: started college while my kids were in school, and so
- 39:01Speaker 2: what would happen is I would be like I got
- 39:03Speaker 2: a paper to write or I got to study for
- 39:04Speaker 2: this test, and keep be like, okay, girls, we're going
- 39:07Speaker 2: to the drive in and watch all these gary movies.
- 39:09Speaker 2: And they would like and it's funny because they're not
- 39:11Speaker 2: coming home and having nightmares. They're like, okay, so this
- 39:13Speaker 2: seat they're like totally critiquing, like like they could have
- 39:16Speaker 2: used better blood product, that didn't look so fake and
- 39:20Speaker 2: I mean her scream was and this is too campy
- 39:23Speaker 2: and like total breakdown stuff. My small children and my
- 39:26Speaker 2: husband running around watching scary movies and breaking it down
- 39:29Speaker 2: like their movie critics. No one, No. I never had
- 39:34Speaker 2: a problem with my kids not sleeping at night, never
- 39:36Speaker 2: had a problem with them not wanting to be home
- 39:38Speaker 2: alone whatever, Like they funny love that stuff. Now they're
- 39:41Speaker 2: kids not so much. They accidentally watch like two minutes
- 39:47Speaker 2: of Chucky. Uh, what's that child play? Is that called
- 39:50Speaker 2: child child play?
- 39:51Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 39:52Speaker 2: And because we turned the TV on, and that's what
- 39:55Speaker 2: show was on when we turned it on so quickly
- 39:57Speaker 2: trying to like get out of there, and they're all
- 39:58Speaker 2: like wait what w shit, and I'm like no, no, no.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Eventually I turned on the Making of Chucky because I'm thinking, Okay,
- 40:05Speaker 2: they can watch it without being scared, because it's not
- 40:07Speaker 2: real and it's you're answering all those questions. Oh no,
- 40:09Speaker 2: they go home. I'm gonna be banned as a sleepover grandma.
- 40:13Speaker 2: At some point I could not sleep a night like
- 40:16Speaker 2: it literally show the robot, like, come on, try to
- 40:21Speaker 2: give you the experience without the experience. But yet my
- 40:23Speaker 2: kids were all like yeah, anyway, I think they could
- 40:26Speaker 2: have done it better with maybe a different actor. That
- 40:29Speaker 2: blood was obviously her that scene to that scene instead
- 40:34Speaker 2: swap the scenes in order. Then maybe it would made
- 40:36Speaker 2: more sins and been we're scary, like that's too many.
- 40:41Speaker 1: Well, even if you're not a believer in the paranormal,
- 40:45Speaker 1: the Stanley Hotel is still a fantastic experience, as is
- 40:48Speaker 1: Este Park.
- 40:48Speaker 2: So I'm excited to go. I have one more question
- 40:50Speaker 2: for you. Yes, have you watched The Shining the movie
- 40:54Speaker 2: and the.
- 40:54Speaker 1: Series, So I haven't watched the series, but I need
- 40:57Speaker 1: to because if you're a fan of The Shining and
- 41:00Speaker 1: Stephen King, you know that Stephen King hated the Stanley
- 41:03Speaker 1: Kubrick version. Okay, like it it warped his idea. So
- 41:08Speaker 1: then he actually appeared in.
- 41:10Speaker 2: The Yes series serious. Yeah, I had watched the movie,
- 41:14Speaker 2: and then when the series came out, I was like, okay,
- 41:16Speaker 2: can we do that as a super serious It was like,
- 41:19Speaker 2: you know, serieses are like dumb, right, and so I'm like,
- 41:22Speaker 2: but I'm gonna watch it anyway because I'm a I'm
- 41:24Speaker 2: a fan of The Shining and I was like, oh
- 41:27Speaker 2: my gosh, this is so much better than the movie.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Is it? Oh it's so they'll tell you the same thing.
- 41:32Speaker 1: Can we do a movie night and just watch the
- 41:35Speaker 1: series all in one night?
- 41:36Speaker 2: Is it too long? It might be like six hours,
- 41:38Speaker 2: but you could look it up. Maybe it's not with commercials.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Maybe without the commercials ice, yeah, taken out, maybe it's less.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Let's look it up. Yeah, I'm in. I want to
- 41:47Speaker 2: see your reaction to it, because I think it's it's different,
- 41:50Speaker 2: it's better. I think anybody who is a fan who's
- 41:52Speaker 2: seen both would say the series is actually better than this.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Okay, Well, I mean I'm a cubric fan. I love
- 41:58Speaker 1: the clockwork orange, a clockwork orange. What about Rosemary's Baby
- 42:02Speaker 1: Love Rosemary? And what was the one? Is it called silver?
- 42:05Speaker 2: Silver Sliver? Sliver? Did you ever see that? I think so.
- 42:09Speaker 1: It's been a while though, but I love the visual
- 42:12Speaker 1: style and the atmosphere that he builds. I mean, I
- 42:15Speaker 1: appreciate that about the shining, like, the atmosphere is incredible.
- 42:18Speaker 2: He terrifies me. It's one of the people that I
- 42:21Speaker 2: think of in real life I'd never really want to meet.
- 42:24Speaker 2: I think he's that creepy.
- 42:25Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, but people I really want to meet in
- 42:29Speaker 1: real life.
- 42:30Speaker 2: Stephen King is is top five. I follow him on Twitter.
- 42:34Speaker 2: I do too. He's a Hilaire. Oh god. The haters
- 42:40Speaker 2: of Stephen King are like, well, they're special people. Yes,
- 42:43Speaker 2: they know they are.
- 42:44Speaker 1: It's Stephen King and weird al are my two weird
- 42:48Speaker 1: like I want to meet him in real life. Weird
- 42:51Speaker 1: Al Oh, which I've sat at a restaurant table next
- 42:56Speaker 1: to Weird Now.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Tell me, Okay, I want people to think about this
- 43:00Speaker 2: shade as head. The two people I really want to
- 43:03Speaker 2: meet our Stephen King and Weird Hell. And I'm thinking,
- 43:07Speaker 2: are they ever in the same space? Like that's they
- 43:09Speaker 2: are way different people, right, I should tell me about
- 43:14Speaker 2: tell me about word out. Why would you want to
- 43:16Speaker 2: meet word What is it about that? That's the second person.
- 43:19Speaker 1: I grew up on weird Al's music, all of his
- 43:21Speaker 1: parodies of all the songs, especially I was. I was
- 43:24Speaker 1: raised on Michael Jackson.
- 43:26Speaker 2: Okay, for those that have not met Shane in real life,
- 43:29Speaker 2: she's talking. I'm like, she is his, his spirit animal,
- 43:34Speaker 2: she's or he's hers. I don't know those parodies. This
- 43:38Speaker 2: is like talking to Shaye on a daily basis. She's
- 43:41Speaker 2: taking life, he's making parodies. He's nerdy. Yes, he's smart.
- 43:46Speaker 1: See yeah, just like you. Well, I don't know about
- 43:50Speaker 1: that part nerdy.
- 43:51Speaker 2: Is I know I'm not as smart as that. Oh,
- 43:54Speaker 2: thank you? Also like the nerdy and the good nerdy
- 43:57Speaker 2: way like the kindie like that, Oh my god, stop
- 44:01Speaker 2: talking to me kind of nerdy, like I keep talking
- 44:03Speaker 2: to thank you. I love you. I said, nerdy not dirty?
- 44:07Speaker 2: Also dirty? Oh probably both?
- 44:11Speaker 1: But yeah, he's he's interesting, he's smart. He's just he's witty,
- 44:18Speaker 1: very witty, and I just appreciate that and what he
- 44:21Speaker 1: does with these parodies. He makes fun of himself, He
- 44:25Speaker 1: makes fun of culture.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Culture.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it's smart when you think, when you read, when
- 44:30Speaker 1: you listen to the lyrics, if you stop from it
- 44:34Speaker 1: just being funny, it is a cultural commentary.
- 44:38Speaker 2: Right right, it's like, oh my gosh, that's that's crazy, funny, ironic, whatever.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Every single time, How did I not put that together? Yeah?
- 44:46Speaker 2: He does put together and positive. I mean right, it's
- 44:51Speaker 2: not mean and no hateful, No, it's not.
- 44:54Speaker 1: I think if your song gets parodied by weird Al,
- 44:58Speaker 1: you should feel like the most honored person.
- 45:01Speaker 2: Right now. You have two versions in the world.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Like uh, Farrell's Happy got parodied into TACKI and that
- 45:10Speaker 1: video is just the most beautiful thing because it is
- 45:13Speaker 1: every amazing comedian of today dancing and singing in the
- 45:18Speaker 1: worst outfits you have ever seen. It's beautiful. I love
- 45:22Speaker 1: Weirdel so much, so, yes, I would love. I've sat
- 45:25Speaker 1: next to him at a restaurant in Hollywood.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Got that close.
- 45:30Speaker 1: He was at the next table, but I was so starstruck.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Okay, here's the thing. We're going to have to just
- 45:35Speaker 2: take this this podcast, get uber famous so that they
- 45:39Speaker 2: want to see us well.
- 45:41Speaker 1: And then Stephen King, like Stephen King. We need to
- 45:43Speaker 1: be on the same guest list. Used to be Neil Gamon,
- 45:46Speaker 1: but apparently he's a sexual predator, so I can't like
- 45:50Speaker 1: him anymore.
- 45:51Speaker 2: I can't any hate guys who Neil What?
- 45:53Speaker 1: Neil Gamon? He's another author, He's my other favorite author.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Turns out you can't let him I know. Oh god,
- 46:01Speaker 1: he'd put down again. He put puppies in a sack
- 46:05Speaker 1: in the dryer.
- 46:07Speaker 2: But why why the drawer? What? So that was Chris's thing.
- 46:10Speaker 1: He's like, I like somebody and then all of a sudden,
- 46:15Speaker 1: sacks of puppies in the dryer.
- 46:17Speaker 2: Right right, right? Gotcha? Okay, Well, we're gonna end this.
- 46:21Speaker 1: This has been a special bonus episode for our patrons
- 46:23Speaker 1: and we appreciate your support. We will continue to add
- 46:26Speaker 1: bonus episodes as we are able and appreciate your patients
- 46:29Speaker 1: as I work through my backlog of editing jobs. We
- 46:32Speaker 1: will also work on continuing to add those ad free
- 46:34Speaker 1: episodes to the Patreon for you. Please reach out if
- 46:37Speaker 1: you have any questions or suggestions, suggestions.
- 46:39Speaker 2: Yeah, what do you want to see a bonus episode?
- 46:42Speaker 2: One that can include swearing. There's no restraints. It doesn't
- 46:45Speaker 2: have to be Pacific right west, head on out and
- 46:48Speaker 2: see what our bigfoot erotica sounds like. And let you
- 46:52Speaker 2: know that there is no limits on what your suggestion
- 46:55Speaker 2: would be exactly none.
- 46:57Speaker 1: And we really appreciate your sport. Thank you so much
- 47:00Speaker 1: to all our patrons. All right, Jody, thanks for hanging
- 47:04Speaker 1: out in my tale of the Stanley Hotel. Let's go,
- 47:06Speaker 1: love it, Let's go, let's go out. Oh, I forgot
- 47:09Speaker 1: to tell you this. As I'm looking up the research
- 47:11Speaker 1: for this episode. I see the events on the Stanley
- 47:14Speaker 1: Hotels page. This October is the fiftieth anniversary of Stephen
- 47:21Speaker 1: King's stay at.
- 47:23Speaker 2: Ser I was only two years old.
- 47:25Speaker 1: Nineteen seventy four. So they are holding a special when
- 47:31Speaker 1: October twenty six, they are holding a special Stanley ball.
- 47:35Speaker 2: It's sold out. I was gonna ask, but it is.
- 47:39Speaker 1: They want you to come dressed either as characters from
- 47:42Speaker 1: The Shining or any of Stephen King's casing he would
- 47:46Speaker 1: love to go. I think this is something you would
- 47:48Speaker 1: have to plan years in advance for dang, because Halloween
- 47:52Speaker 1: there is booked years in advance, insane.
- 47:56Speaker 2: So maybe I'm when I become a nomad and I'm
- 47:59Speaker 2: just driving around to things to do. I need to
- 48:03Speaker 2: put that my lid for my lid, my list for
- 48:05Speaker 2: the future, things to plan for.
- 48:07Speaker 1: Yes, I would love to go to something like that.
- 48:09Speaker 1: Well anyways, alright, guys, we'll see you next time.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Thank you, See you down the rabbit hole.
