- 0:00Speaker 1: Today's guest is a legendary actor, author, thought leader, just
- 0:05Speaker 1: a real vibe curator. He has a new book out
- 0:09Speaker 1: called Poems and Prayers. We had a great time down
- 0:13Speaker 1: here in Austin getting to know each other. Today's guest
- 0:16Speaker 1: is Mr. Matthew McConaughey.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Shine on me and I will find Glad to be here.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you so much, Matthew. Nice to meet you, man.
- 0:37Speaker 1: You too, bud.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Where are you from?
- 0:39Speaker 1: I'm from Louisiana.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Which part?
- 0:40Speaker 1: I'm from Covington, Louisiana, down there, about 40 miles north
- 0:44Speaker 1: of New Orleans.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Okay. I love Louisiana, where the weeds grow a little
- 0:51Speaker 2: taller and the chassis is just a touch looser. But
- 0:56Speaker 2: my family, my dad's mother, the Maitlands, had a school
- 1:01Speaker 2: in Morgan City, so we would go to Morgan City
- 1:02Speaker 2: every year for the Shrimp Festival. My dad grew up later,
- 1:06Speaker 2: lived in a city park outside of New Orleans. And
- 1:09Speaker 2: my best friend, who's since passed away, was from Zachary, Louisiana.
- 1:14Speaker 2: And I've always— I was raised in East Texas, so that
- 1:19Speaker 2: Louisiana humidity bleeds over a little bit over the border there,
- 1:22Speaker 2: you know?
- 1:23Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. It's like somebody just exhaling a big— hit a
- 1:25Speaker 1: cigarette smoke over there.
- 1:26Speaker 2: We used to hit Hirsch Coliseum, man, because you could
- 1:29Speaker 2: drink at 18 and get over there for— my first concert
- 1:32Speaker 2: was rat.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Remember that?
- 1:35Speaker 1: R-A-T-T?
- 1:36Speaker 2: R-A-T-T, man. Yeah, dude. Laying down round and round.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:40Speaker 2: And I'd go to WWE matches over there.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Bro, you were in the best place for wrestling. Yeah.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I got kicked out of Hirsch Coliseum twice. You got
- 1:49Speaker 2: kicked out of it two times? Two times, which is
- 1:51Speaker 2: tough to do.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:52Speaker 2: But if you spit a loogie on King Kong Bundy
- 1:57Speaker 2: when he's coming to the ring, yes, they will try
- 2:01Speaker 2: to kick you out, but then— You get kicked out,
- 2:04Speaker 2: and there is a window on the exterior of Hirsch
- 2:06Speaker 2: here that goes to one of the bathrooms from which
- 2:09Speaker 2: I snuck back in. And then I had a hidden
- 2:14Speaker 2: bag of rotten tomatoes, and I pelted Skandar Akbar.
- 2:21Speaker 4: From the stands. And got kicked out again. That's awesome, dude.
- 2:27Speaker 4: They should have paid you for being there. You're helping
- 2:30Speaker 4: from the crowd. Bring up Skandar Akbar.
- 2:32Speaker 1: There he is.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:35Speaker 3: God.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Remember, that was the bad guy at that time.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Always, dude. They always had that little kind of cheeky
- 2:42Speaker 1: bad guy, you know? We had Kevin Von Eric on here.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Oh, there we go.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And that was pretty special, man. Yeah, that's cool. I
- 2:49Speaker 1: loved wrestling at that time.
- 2:51Speaker 2: It was so fun, man. Hacksaw Jim Duggan was my guy.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:56Speaker 2: I'm out with a two by four.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Yeah. I saw him. I went to Hulk Hogan's funeral.
- 3:02Speaker 1: And Hacksaw was there.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Yeah, there we go.
- 3:04Speaker 1: It was pretty cool, man. All my heroes were there.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Like I had figurines of them at home and the
- 3:09Speaker 1: figurines are taller these days. And half of them are
- 3:11Speaker 1: a lot of guys like in wheelchairs. It was kind
- 3:13Speaker 1: of tough to see. Cause you see like just the,
- 3:16Speaker 1: the remnants of these heroes, kind of like the stained
- 3:19Speaker 1: statues in a way, you know, it was pretty, uh,
- 3:23Speaker 1: it was magnificent and weird, you know, it's like, it
- 3:26Speaker 1: was beautiful and sad. It's like, you almost want to
- 3:28Speaker 1: pretend that things are just in a certain place and time,
- 3:31Speaker 1: you know? Your book kind of goes into some stuff
- 3:32Speaker 1: like that. Yeah. Were you an Evil Knievel fan? I
- 3:36Speaker 1: didn't get into him much. We'd see him, like, I
- 3:38Speaker 1: think I saw him do one jump, but that might
- 3:40Speaker 1: have been just a touch before I was, like, kind
- 3:42Speaker 1: of awake to the world.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I got into him because my brother turned me on
- 3:46Speaker 2: to my older brother, Pat. Anyway, he was just thinking about,
- 3:50Speaker 2: you know, fallen heroes and icons that, you know, I
- 3:53Speaker 2: got to know him later in his life.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Evil? Yeah.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Got to know him pretty doggone well, man. I was
- 3:59Speaker 2: trying to, you know, there's still a story out there
- 4:02Speaker 2: to be told on him, a movie to be made.
- 4:05Speaker 2: And I was around it, developing it for 25 years.
- 4:09Speaker 2: And yeah, there we are, spoke at his funeral.
- 4:14Speaker 1: No way, that's so cool.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:16Speaker 1: What kind of guy was he?
- 4:18Speaker 2: Oh man, you know, he did not, people, the misconception
- 4:21Speaker 2: are like he had a death wish. He didn't have
- 4:23Speaker 2: a death wish. He had a life wish, dude. He was,
- 4:25Speaker 2: as he said, He needed to jump because he needed
- 4:28Speaker 2: to sweat in his boots. It was almost like, I think,
- 4:35Speaker 2: when he got on the bike and put his hands
- 4:37Speaker 2: on the handlebar, I think his pulse went down. Meaning,
- 4:44Speaker 2: you know, there's certain boxers that get the shit beat
- 4:47Speaker 2: out of them, and they're like, dude, you're taking four
- 4:49Speaker 2: fights a year. It's too many. And they're like, no,
- 4:51Speaker 2: I have to. My life outside when I don't have.
- 4:54Speaker 2: to train or get ready for a fight. It's tougher
- 4:56Speaker 2: on me. It's too scary.
- 4:57Speaker 1: A lot of guys say that.
- 4:58Speaker 2: And I think he would always say like, hey, he
- 5:01Speaker 2: wouldn't postpone any jump, even if it was impractical, even
- 5:04Speaker 2: if his engineer was like, dude, you're not going to
- 5:06Speaker 2: make it. He was like, well, the American people want,
- 5:09Speaker 2: and they paid their tickets, and they're going to show
- 5:11Speaker 2: up on time. We're going to do this. I mean,
- 5:12Speaker 2: I think part of that for him, my opinion is
- 5:15Speaker 2: that he was like, no, I have to jump.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Right.
- 5:18Speaker 2: I can't postpone these things.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Well, also to have that level of integrity with time itself,
- 5:23Speaker 1: with the clock of life, right? To be like, because
- 5:26Speaker 1: I'll postpone things. I'll feed you. I'll be 10 minutes late.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I'll be 15, 20. But to say, to tell time,
- 5:32Speaker 1: to tell existence, I'm going to be there and meet
- 5:35Speaker 1: existence right there, that's pretty ballsy. I mean, these days
- 5:40Speaker 1: it's super ballsy, but yeah. I mean, I think it's
- 5:42Speaker 1: a ballsy thing for anybody to do. But he was
- 5:45Speaker 1: like Red Bull before they made a damn liquid. Remember?
- 5:47Speaker 1: I mean, he was. Hell yeah.
- 5:49Speaker 2: People would tune in to feel something. All the extreme sports,
- 5:51Speaker 2: you know?
- 5:51Speaker 1: I remember people just in the yard, if he was
- 5:54Speaker 1: going to jump one night, they'd have people out in
- 5:55Speaker 1: the yard fucking drinking Dr. Pepper and fucking just massaging
- 5:59Speaker 1: each other's shoulders. Pull it. Oh, yeah.
- 6:02Speaker 2: And the thing, you know what happened, what got kind
- 6:05Speaker 2: of sad, but it's just true, towards the end of
- 6:08Speaker 2: his career, and I saw this happen with his son
- 6:11Speaker 2: at a jump too, is, People started, first came, wow,
- 6:15Speaker 2: he made the jump.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Wow.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Then it became like, I'm coming for the wreck. I'm
- 6:23Speaker 2: coming for the crash. And I've been to jumps where,
- 6:27Speaker 2: you know, because he always come out first, right? There's
- 6:29Speaker 2: the ramp. Here we go. Oh, he's just bypassing.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:33Speaker 2: You got a little tease.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:34Speaker 2: You got to do a couple of runarounds to get
- 6:36Speaker 2: everyone going. Get the brawl off a little. And then
- 6:37Speaker 2: he's getting the crowd going up and they're all just,
- 6:39Speaker 2: you know, pulling down. Here we go. And then he
- 6:42Speaker 2: does it. Boom. And soon as he lands and makes it,
- 6:44Speaker 2: it's almost like I saw so many people like, oh, shit.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Stomp the cigarette out. Throw that Dr. Pepper in the
- 6:51Speaker 2: trash can and leave. Yeah.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Dang it.
- 6:53Speaker 2: You know?
- 6:54Speaker 1: Yeah. Good for him, but yeah.
- 6:56Speaker 2: No, but he made a, he was a legendary cowboy, man.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Let's look at one of these. This is Caesar's Palace.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Oh, and he created this. He called, he was in
- 7:07Speaker 2: a motel and called the head of Caesars, all right,
- 7:12Speaker 2: and said, hey, my name's, you know, Bobby Bernstein. I'm
- 7:16Speaker 2: with ABC Wide World of Sports. I hear this guy,
- 7:18Speaker 2: Evel Neville, is going to jump your fountain. And they're like,
- 7:21Speaker 2: what are you talking about? I don't remember Evel Neville.
- 7:22Speaker 2: I don't know what you're talking about. Hung up the phone.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Called back. Another voice impersonated, I'm with the wide world
- 7:28Speaker 2: of sports. Name's Bob Knott. I hear this evil Neville's
- 7:30Speaker 2: going to. He did it like three times. And finally,
- 7:34Speaker 2: the guy on the other end of Caesars was like,
- 7:35Speaker 2: who the hell is this evil Neville, evil Neville guy?
- 7:37Speaker 2: Find him.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Right.
- 7:39Speaker 2: And they ended up calling back. Evil answers his own
- 7:44Speaker 2: as evil and goes, yeah, I'll do it. and worked
- 7:48Speaker 2: out the door, but he created that jump. And this
- 7:50Speaker 2: jump is, look at the violence after it. I mean,
- 7:53Speaker 2: jumps found, and look at the crash, man. Boom, here
- 8:01Speaker 2: we go, oh shit. Oh, can we talk impact?
- 8:08Speaker 1: Bro, that's, yeah.
- 8:09Speaker 2: There ain't no smoke and mirrors with that, man.
- 8:11Speaker 1: There ain't no mattress that's going to fix that. No, sir.
- 8:14Speaker 1: There ain't no posture.
- 8:15Speaker 2: That ain't AI. You didn't fix that in post to
- 8:18Speaker 2: make it look worse. Oh, dude.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Yeah, there was just something like, there was something special
- 8:26Speaker 1: about that time where it was like, I don't know,
- 8:30Speaker 1: the moment meant so much more. You know, there was something,
- 8:34Speaker 1: there used to be something about the past that the
- 8:35Speaker 1: moment you couldn't copy it or you couldn't record it. Like,
- 8:38Speaker 1: I think that's why those times, you talk about some
- 8:40Speaker 1: of this in your book, man, and it's like about
- 8:42Speaker 1: time and like, God, like the moment of when I
- 8:45Speaker 1: was a kid or sitting there laughing with my friends,
- 8:47Speaker 1: like the moment was so much more real because you
- 8:49Speaker 1: were never going to get it again.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Right.
- 8:51Speaker 2: And you didn't, you couldn't necessarily record it and you
- 8:54Speaker 2: sure as hell couldn't share it. There's a study on this, man.
- 8:57Speaker 2: I don't know if I'm going to say it's like
- 8:58Speaker 2: 20 years ago or 25. The moment, was the biggest
- 9:03Speaker 2: dopamine rush. The jump, the cresting of the mountain, the
- 9:07Speaker 2: pulling off whatever you tried to pull off.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Scientifically measured, the biggest dopamine hit. Cameras and mobile devices
- 9:15Speaker 2: and stuff come out. It slowly turned to the recording
- 9:21Speaker 2: of the moment, the snapshot, okay? Not the cresting of
- 9:27Speaker 2: the hill, but we just recorded it. The ownership of
- 9:30Speaker 2: the moment. The ownership of the moment, right? And then
- 9:34Speaker 2: what has happened now, and it's been around for 25 years,
- 9:37Speaker 2: the biggest scientific dopamine hit that we get as humans
- 9:40Speaker 2: is not the doing of the deed, is not the
- 9:43Speaker 2: recording of the deed. It is when we press share.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Really?
- 9:51Speaker 2: Now that's a little bit like living in third person.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Like we're all running around going, my rush is not
- 9:57Speaker 2: when I run for a touchdown. My rush is when
- 9:59Speaker 2: I see myself on the jumbotron running for the touchdown.
- 10:05Speaker 2: And that's a slippery slope, man. You know what I mean?
- 10:09Speaker 1: Well, it's slippery, but it also seems hard to even
- 10:10Speaker 1: conceptualize who I am then, you know?
- 10:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Am I myself? Am I just a viewer of myself now?
- 10:18Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it. We're much more voyeurs now. And our
- 10:21Speaker 2: identity comes from being objective, trying to look at ourself
- 10:25Speaker 2: from outside. And now it comes from, well, what did
- 10:27Speaker 2: you think of what I did?
- 10:29Speaker 1: Yeah. And that's the worst. What did you think of
- 10:33Speaker 1: what I did?
- 10:34Speaker 2: That will be my definition of who I am. We
- 10:38Speaker 2: got to watch that.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Dude, my sponsor tells me, he's like, you're not who
- 10:42Speaker 1: they think you are. You're not who you are. And
- 10:44Speaker 1: you're not who you think they think you are.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:48Speaker 1: I don't know if I messed it up or not.
- 10:50Speaker 2: No, but I hear what you're saying.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Yeah. He's like, but yeah, it's just interesting how that.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Especially with these kids these days, man. It's hard enough
- 10:57Speaker 2: as adults.
- 10:59Speaker 1: But I think as adults, we put our thought process
- 11:03Speaker 1: onto them. And I think they live in a different
- 11:05Speaker 1: world and realm that we kind of can't conceptualize because
- 11:08Speaker 1: they don't seem as affected as, you know what I'm saying?
- 11:11Speaker 1: And it's hard to even know.
- 11:13Speaker 2: No, I hear you.
- 11:14Speaker 1: But I hear what you're saying too. It's like.
- 11:17Speaker 2: I'm not trying to be a dinosaur either. I don't
- 11:19Speaker 2: want to be a dinosaur dad. You know what I mean?
- 11:20Speaker 2: I don't want to be one of those when my
- 11:21Speaker 2: kids are going, geez, yeah, it sounds like, you know,
- 11:24Speaker 2: give it another TED Talk from back in the, you
- 11:26Speaker 2: know what I mean?
- 11:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:27Speaker 2: But I hear you because there's some things that they're
- 11:29Speaker 2: just with. It's just part of their vernacular. This thing's
- 11:32Speaker 2: an extension of their arm, that kind of sharing and socializing.
- 11:35Speaker 2: What do you mean? That's like having a conversation.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:37Speaker 2: And we're going, I could say what I was, you
- 11:39Speaker 2: and I were just talking about it because they could
- 11:41Speaker 2: understand it. They would go, okay, but. That's not how
- 11:46Speaker 2: it is.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:47Speaker 2: You know?
- 11:48Speaker 1: Right. I mean, it's all kind of, I mean, it's
- 11:50Speaker 1: all fascinating. I mean, even we were talking about like,
- 11:53Speaker 1: I just got back from the Ole Miss game. I
- 11:55Speaker 1: know you were at. It was fun.
- 11:57Speaker 2: You guys were rolling, man. And Lane's doing a great
- 11:59Speaker 2: job of keeping y'all mentally in the right spot with
- 12:03Speaker 2: all this noise about him going to Florida or elsewhere.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:06Speaker 2: He big boyed it. He big boyed it.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Look, what do you mean?
- 12:09Speaker 2: Meaning he didn't go the traditional, no, it's not true.
- 12:12Speaker 2: We want to keep the noise out. He went. I
- 12:16Speaker 2: got this noise. Y'all got this noise because we're winning.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:19Speaker 2: This is the noise that's out there. He's talking to
- 12:22Speaker 2: those young men like an adult who's up with the times.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:26Speaker 2: He's going, this is part of it, man.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Right.
- 12:28Speaker 2: This is part of it. And we're doing it because
- 12:30Speaker 2: we're doing good. So let's do as well as we
- 12:32Speaker 2: can right now and keep winning. It's a great message
- 12:34Speaker 2: because your players are going, they get it now. I
- 12:36Speaker 2: think these players get the portals. You're probably not going
- 12:42Speaker 2: to be playing with the same guys for, Three years straight.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Four years straight. There's you can transfer in season. You
- 12:49Speaker 2: can go here.
- 12:50Speaker 1: I mean, there's two portals now, I think, aren't there?
- 12:52Speaker 1: Aren't there two portals during the season? And I'm actually
- 12:56Speaker 1: a I'm a Vanderbilt fan, but my but I'm friends
- 12:58Speaker 1: with Lane.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:00Speaker 1: And I grew up as an LSU fan.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And sometimes people are like, sometimes they'll be like, well,
- 13:04Speaker 1: you're a fair weather fan or something. I'm like, but
- 13:07Speaker 1: now like you're saying, there's kind of like fair weather
- 13:09Speaker 1: franchises in a way. It's like they're changing players so
- 13:12Speaker 1: much and things and that, and they expect you to
- 13:14Speaker 1: lock in like my dad did or like I did
- 13:17Speaker 1: when we were kids. It's like if you buy a jersey,
- 13:20Speaker 1: the guy's gone. Things change so much. So I think
- 13:24Speaker 1: it's interesting some of the expectations sometimes out of fans.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Well, it's harder to create. As an organization, as a team,
- 13:32Speaker 2: as a school, as that, oh, this is our brand
- 13:37Speaker 2: of football. Last one to do it in the pros
- 13:40Speaker 2: was what? New England. No matter who came and went,
- 13:42Speaker 2: it was Belichick's way of football. It was Tom Brady, quarterback.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Robert Kraft is on. There was a certain way. Remember
- 13:49Speaker 2: people would come to, studs would come to, big names
- 13:51Speaker 2: would come to New England and there wasn't a lot
- 13:53Speaker 2: of press about them and all of a sudden next
- 13:55Speaker 2: week you're like, oh, they got dropped. It wasn't a big,
- 13:57Speaker 2: no big fanfare. It was like, you didn't play our way? That's,
- 14:00Speaker 2: You're kind of gone.
- 14:00Speaker 5: Right.
- 14:01Speaker 1: We're good if you're not our way. Our way is
- 14:03Speaker 1: our way. Yeah.
- 14:04Speaker 2: So now when you're plugging in so many players, and
- 14:07Speaker 2: we're going through this with Austin FC, our soccer club,
- 14:11Speaker 2: do we have a brand of what they call futsbo, soccer,
- 14:14Speaker 2: that you, this is how we play. Coaches and players
- 14:17Speaker 2: can be plugged into our system. It's harder to do
- 14:20Speaker 2: because players are moving around. We got a chance to
- 14:23Speaker 2: get this stud player. Well, if he's a running option quarterback,
- 14:26Speaker 2: and we've been running traditional offense, which is drop back,
- 14:29Speaker 2: Be dumb not to update the way we play offense.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:32Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Or whatever that is. But
- 14:35Speaker 2: you have– yeah. How much are the expectations for the
- 14:37Speaker 2: brand of how people play football at certain schools?
- 14:40Speaker 3: Yeah. You know?
- 14:41Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 14:42Speaker 2: What's the brand? Who has a brand of this is
- 14:45Speaker 2: how you play? It's a great question. I mean– In
- 14:48Speaker 2: college football. This is how we play the expectations of
- 14:51Speaker 2: how– maybe the brand– maybe the cultures are similar. And
- 14:55Speaker 2: you have– this is an understood whether it's– aggressive violent
- 14:59Speaker 2: or or finesse whatever whatever that is or we're gonna
- 15:02Speaker 2: have a great defense right no matter what i uh.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Well saban had one kind of saban felt like he
- 15:07Speaker 1: had it he did i feel like sarkeesian is a
- 15:09Speaker 1: guy that is very much he is the boss there
- 15:12Speaker 1: you know there's an energy there with him that is
- 15:15Speaker 1: very cut and dried yep um you know but yeah
- 15:18Speaker 1: when i was growing up it was like pittsburgh kind
- 15:19Speaker 1: of had the defense you know baltimore had a defense
- 15:23Speaker 1: there was a toughness about those places You had San
- 15:26Speaker 1: Francisco that was always a great passing attack. Yeah, I
- 15:29Speaker 1: don't know. I guess like– Yeah.
- 15:32Speaker 2: If you have Earl Campbell back there for Houston or
- 15:35Speaker 2: you have– what's the guy for big boy out of
- 15:38Speaker 2: Alabama for Baltimore?
- 15:40Speaker 1: Oh, Derrick Henry.
- 15:41Speaker 2: If you have them, you've gone, okay, we're going to
- 15:43Speaker 2: be a running team.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
- 15:45Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Did you ever hear that
- 15:47Speaker 2: bum Phillips quote on Earl Campbell? I don't know unless
- 15:52Speaker 2: y'all remember Earl Campbell out of the Tyler Rose. Oh, yeah.
- 15:55Speaker 1: He played for Dallas too, didn't he, or no?
- 15:57Speaker 2: No, Houston. He played for Houston. Yeah, the Oilers at
- 15:59Speaker 2: that time.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 16:00Speaker 1: The Oilers ended up in Tennessee. That's where I live now.
- 16:01Speaker 1: They ended up in Nashville.
- 16:02Speaker 2: So they would give, Bum Phillips was the coach, and
- 16:06Speaker 2: he would give Earl the ball like 35 times a game.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:12Speaker 2: And the reports started coming out going, man, are you
- 16:14Speaker 2: worried about the wear and tear on Earl giving him
- 16:18Speaker 2: the ball that often? Bum says, No, not really. That
- 16:22Speaker 2: ball ain't that heavy.
- 16:23Speaker 1: That's awesome, dude. Well, you used to have just so
- 16:29Speaker 1: many good personalities. There's a Jim Mora talking to reporters.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Will you look it up? Saints, Jim Mora.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Playoffs.
- 16:36Speaker 1: This is even before that. Oh, it is? Oh, yeah, bro.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Wait till you see this. He's talking about his team.
- 16:42Speaker 1: But yeah, playoffs. He was great, man. Watch this. Listen
- 16:46Speaker 1: to this. This is crazy.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Jim, obviously you're not happy. Oh, we got our ass kicked.
- 16:51Speaker 3: We got our ass kicked.
- 16:54Speaker 2: It was sickening.
- 16:58Speaker 3: We have 18 plays on offense. First 18 plays, we
- 17:01Speaker 3: turn the ball over, one for a touchdown. The other
- 17:03Speaker 3: one's going to set up a touchdown. We got backs
- 17:06Speaker 3: that can't hang on to the ball. They out-hit us.
- 17:08Speaker 3: They out-toughed us.
- 17:09Speaker 2: We stunk today.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Not even close between that football team and our football team.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Not even close.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Ridiculous.
- 17:16Speaker 3: We run two screens. We don't block anybody. We get
- 17:18Speaker 3: a back, gets his knee blown out on one of them.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Couldn't block anybody. We stunk.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Just stunk.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Dean told me he blew his knee out.
- 17:31Speaker 2: You know, you've got to block people on a screen.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Shady gets the ball out there, and two guys, big
- 17:35Speaker 3: old animals nail his ass.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Shit.
- 17:38Speaker 2: It's ridiculous. We run a screen before that, and we
- 17:41Speaker 2: get our ass nailed.
- 17:43Speaker 3: What about scales, Coach? I don't know.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 17:47Speaker 3: You know, Dean said he couldn't put any weight on
- 17:49Speaker 3: his leg. That didn't sound too good to me. We're down,
- 17:51Speaker 3: you know, we're down in fact, we're down in everything. We, we, we,
- 17:54Speaker 3: you know, shit, we don't have enough people right now.
- 17:56Speaker 3: It'll be hard to practice next week.
- 17:58Speaker 1: There you go.
- 17:59Speaker 2: There's not many of them out there. I mean, you know,
- 18:00Speaker 2: I miss my friend Mike Leach watching that.
- 18:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:04Speaker 2: You know, that guy.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Oh, that guy was great. What was he at Oklahoma state?
- 18:08Speaker 2: Texas tech.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Oh, Texas tech. Cliff Kingsbury country.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Have you heard the one amount after they win? Players
- 18:17Speaker 2: sitting out there in the river on a blanket.
- 18:20Speaker 1: With fat little girlfriends.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Oh, bring up Mike Leach's fat little girlfriends. Listen to this.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Telling them how great they are. Yeah, that's so true.
- 18:31Speaker 2: This guy's classic.
- 18:34Speaker 5: As coaches, we failed to make our coaching points and
- 18:38Speaker 5: our points more compelling than their fat little girlfriends. Their
- 18:41Speaker 5: fat little girlfriends have some obvious advantages. For one thing,
- 18:45Speaker 5: their fat little girlfriends are telling them what they want
- 18:47Speaker 5: to hear, which is how great you are and how
- 18:50Speaker 5: easy it's going to be and how, you know, we
- 18:54Speaker 5: had a whole bunch of people. Everybody wanted to win
- 18:57Speaker 5: the football game, but nobody wanted to play the football game.
- 19:00Speaker 5: That defies every level of work ethic that exists with
- 19:05Speaker 5: regard to football. As coaches, we have to solve our
- 19:08Speaker 5: failure on reaching them. And the players have to listen.
- 19:13Speaker 5: And I'm willing to go to fairly amazing lengths to
- 19:17Speaker 5: try to make that happen. I don't know if I'll
- 19:18Speaker 5: be successful this week or not. But, you know, I
- 19:22Speaker 5: am going to try. And there will be some people
- 19:24Speaker 5: inconvenienced if it happens to be their fat little girlfriends.
- 19:27Speaker 1: That's awesome. That's what we need. People need to be
- 19:32Speaker 1: brave enough to have a personality these days. Right. It's
- 19:36Speaker 1: kind of interesting, you know? But check this out. Mm-hmm.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Because I'm with you. That's entertaining. It's smart. It's an
- 19:44Speaker 2: inside look. It's frank. It's open. People call it politically incorrect.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Whatever.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Forget all that. It's in the moment. It's great hearing
- 19:54Speaker 2: somebody be honest in the moment with some color. But
- 19:59Speaker 2: I also look at people like a great franchise. Bill
- 20:04Speaker 2: Belichick says nothing. Do your job. Do your job. That's it.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Great coach of the Spurs. Popovich.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Yeah, Pop.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Cuts off interview.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Uh-uh.
- 20:20Speaker 3: Yep.
- 20:21Speaker 5: No.
- 20:22Speaker 2: You saw it. Thank you. Bam. So there is something
- 20:27Speaker 2: that they keep noise out because they don't give any
- 20:30Speaker 2: color commentation.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:32Speaker 2: And is there something about that that is a stability
- 20:35Speaker 2: within a franchise that your head coach... is going to
- 20:40Speaker 2: handle all that color behind closed doors. Or just stay
- 20:43Speaker 2: on that line. Keep it super simple. Do your job.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Do your job. You didn't do your job, you're out.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Going to get someone in that can do your job.
- 20:50Speaker 2: I know it's much more complicated than that. They're running
- 20:52Speaker 2: X's and O's and everything. But this is another question.
- 20:56Speaker 2: And look, in college football, which is why I like
- 20:57Speaker 2: college more than pro.
- 20:58Speaker 1: So much.
- 20:59Speaker 2: So, our great legendary Texas coach, Darrell K. Royal, told
- 21:06Speaker 2: me one time, he goes, Matt, you can get The
- 21:08Speaker 2: maximum potential out of your team, three Saturdays a season,
- 21:12Speaker 2: I believe it was number three Saturdays out of a season.
- 21:15Speaker 2: So at that time you had 10, so you got
- 21:16Speaker 2: 12 now. So now maybe you say you can get four. Boy,
- 21:20Speaker 2: there's an awesome black hole there to fill for the psychology.
- 21:26Speaker 2: That's all psychology. Yeah, for sure. Because you hope you have,
- 21:29Speaker 2: you coach to have your team at peak, for one
- 21:32Speaker 2: of those peak three weekends against the best teams. And
- 21:36Speaker 2: then you hope they'll just play kind of all right
- 21:39Speaker 2: against the all right competition and then have their worst
- 21:42Speaker 2: days against competition. They should beat anyway. They should just roll. But, boy,
- 21:46Speaker 2: if three, I'm still curious. What if you got a
- 21:50Speaker 2: coach right now? If you could get six top peak
- 21:54Speaker 2: performance Saturdays, seven? I mean, because I'm asking for three hours.
- 22:01Speaker 2: I'm asking for 36 hours a season. for you to
- 22:06Speaker 2: be mentally, physically, and spiritually on the edge and locked in.
- 22:12Speaker 2: There's an opportunity there. Is that what I'm saying? Oh, 100%.
- 22:16Speaker 1: And for somebody to even see that there is an
- 22:17Speaker 1: opportunity there, right? Because sometimes you might just look at
- 22:20Speaker 1: life and be like, well, there's going to be highs
- 22:21Speaker 1: and lows, right? Like you can have a great team,
- 22:23Speaker 1: but yeah, you're not going to win every single time.
- 22:26Speaker 1: So it's like those moments where you've had two great
- 22:30Speaker 1: weeks in a row and like now the spread is 17,
- 22:32Speaker 1: but it's like, no, you– that's not the laws of life, right?
- 22:37Speaker 1: So how do you adjust? What's realistically possible to weather
- 22:44Speaker 1: that storm of that third weekend where it's just the
- 22:47Speaker 1: laws of the universe are not gonna allow it to
- 22:49Speaker 1: be as perfect.
- 22:50Speaker 2: And balance how much, look, sometimes you need, your team
- 22:57Speaker 2: needs confidence. You know, I remember talking to Mack Brown
- 23:02Speaker 2: at practice After we, I don't know, 20-something years ago,
- 23:06Speaker 2: we'd just come off like, I don't know, a 45-nothing
- 23:08Speaker 2: route to UCLA.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Beat them?
- 23:11Speaker 2: No, they routed us. We were not good. And that
- 23:15Speaker 2: Tuesday practice or that Monday practice, it was like a
- 23:20Speaker 2: completion for two yards, a clean handoff that went for
- 23:24Speaker 2: two yards. We got to applaud that. I was like,
- 23:27Speaker 2: we're going to applaud that. It was like, man, I've
- 23:29Speaker 2: got the team. We need good clean handoffs. and a
- 23:33Speaker 2: reception and a clean pass that wasn't intercepted. We have
- 23:37Speaker 2: to build the confidence back up. So sometimes you're there.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Other times you have such talent and they're so confident.
- 23:43Speaker 2: How do you keep them playing? No, I'm not worried
- 23:46Speaker 2: about your confidence. I need to make sure you feel
- 23:48Speaker 2: like an underdog against yourself, against the ability that you
- 23:52Speaker 2: can play to. Because great teams are essentially playing against
- 23:58Speaker 2: themselves and how great they think they can be. And
- 24:01Speaker 2: that opponent is nothing but in my way.
- 24:04Speaker 3: Right.
- 24:05Speaker 2: To me being as great as I can be. And that's,
- 24:07Speaker 2: if you got that working, if you can flick that
- 24:10Speaker 2: switch in you, howdy. Howdy.
- 24:15Speaker 1: In your own life, because this is something I think
- 24:17Speaker 1: about a lot. I think about confidence and ego, right?
- 24:20Speaker 1: And I've always had a tough time kind of, I've
- 24:22Speaker 1: always had a tough time knowing what my feelings are.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Like when I was growing up, I didn't have a
- 24:26Speaker 1: lot of feelings, I think. And so I didn't know
- 24:27Speaker 1: what a lot of them were.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:29Speaker 1: And then as I've gotten older, it's like.
- 24:30Speaker 2: You didn't have feelings or when you had feelings, you
- 24:32Speaker 2: just didn't know what the hell.
- 24:33Speaker 1: They were about. I didn't know what they were. So
- 24:34Speaker 1: I couldn't tell if I was like, have like instincts
- 24:38Speaker 1: or uncertain, like, like what was like, like when it
- 24:42Speaker 1: was making decisions, I couldn't tell what was instinctual or
- 24:45Speaker 1: what was me making a choice. Just, I just had a, like,
- 24:48Speaker 1: I just didn't have a lot of feelings when I
- 24:49Speaker 1: was young. And so it was kind of like a
- 24:51Speaker 1: late bloomer in some of those worlds. But one of
- 24:53Speaker 1: the things I struggle with sometimes still is just like
- 24:55Speaker 1: ego and confidence. You know what I'm saying? Because one
- 24:59Speaker 1: can be super dangerous. One is healthy.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Well, look, man, I think ego's gotten a bad rap. This,
- 25:06Speaker 2: you know, elimination of the ego. You know, there's a
- 25:12Speaker 2: difference to going, I have confidence. I have confidence. than
- 25:22Speaker 2: there is, oh, look at me. The difference is I
- 25:26Speaker 2: am me. Me is the objective one, right? Me is
- 25:29Speaker 2: that jumbotron, the lawyer one where you're going like, oh yeah,
- 25:32Speaker 2: how do I look? I look good. There's where I
- 25:33Speaker 2: get my confidence from something I saw myself outside of myself.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Confidence with the I, which I think is true ego
- 25:40Speaker 2: when we handle it right, is I think extremely healthy.
- 25:42Speaker 2: It mean, man, it's like judgment. You gotta have judgment
- 25:48Speaker 2: or you have no identity. And where do you get
- 25:51Speaker 2: judgment from? Well, part of that, I believe, is part
- 25:53Speaker 2: of the ego of I am discerning because I prefer
- 25:56Speaker 2: this over that. I expect this more than I expect that.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Experiences.
- 26:01Speaker 2: You know, for myself or from others. Now, ego can
- 26:05Speaker 2: get out of check when it gets into the look
- 26:07Speaker 2: at me. Yeah. But when it's coming from the subjective
- 26:11Speaker 2: place of like, no, I'm prepared for this. This is
- 26:16Speaker 2: what I'm fashioned to do. I have the ability. I'm
- 26:18Speaker 2: capable and I'm willing. I'm going to do that. And
- 26:22Speaker 2: no one's going to judge myself harder than I'm going
- 26:26Speaker 2: to judge myself because I believe what I am capable
- 26:29Speaker 2: of doing. I mean, look, I wrote about this in
- 26:34Speaker 2: Greenlight since a little bit in Poems and Prayers. These men,
- 26:37Speaker 2: these roofs, these limitations we put on ourself, we make
- 26:40Speaker 2: those up. That's a cocky ass thing to do. Who
- 26:44Speaker 2: do we think we are?
- 26:46Speaker 1: To put limitations on us.
- 26:47Speaker 2: To put these roofs on our ability if we have
- 26:52Speaker 2: that ability. Now we get into what's humility. Humility, which
- 26:58Speaker 2: is a word I had trouble with because growing up,
- 27:00Speaker 2: especially in religion, humility I always kind of cowered. My
- 27:06Speaker 2: shoulders came forward. My head kind of got down. And
- 27:09Speaker 2: I didn't know how to have confidence with humility. How
- 27:11Speaker 2: do you have confidence and be humble? And then I
- 27:14Speaker 2: heard a new definition. of humility or being humble, admitting
- 27:18Speaker 2: that we have more to learn. Now, that definition, all
- 27:22Speaker 2: of a sudden, my shoulders backed up. My head went,
- 27:24Speaker 2: I said, oh, I can dig that. I'm in. I
- 27:27Speaker 2: have more to learn.
- 27:27Speaker 1: Because that's an act of humility.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Now I'm going forward. It's affirmative. I can still be graceful,
- 27:33Speaker 2: still be empathetic and listen, but I'm not.
- 27:37Speaker 1: And it's retreating.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not being passive. I think we've got to have.
- 27:45Speaker 1: A healthy ego. Empowering and empowering taking on of knowledge
- 27:49Speaker 1: and admitting you have more to learn.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Yeah. It was a freeing. Sometimes a definition of a
- 27:55Speaker 2: word for me, like, oh, I never thought of it
- 27:57Speaker 2: that way. Now I understand it. Sometimes it takes 40.
- 28:01Speaker 2: I didn't learn that one until I was 45.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:04Speaker 2: So for 45 years, hey, hey, hey, get off your toes.
- 28:08Speaker 2: You better be humble. I was like, yeah. I'd cow
- 28:11Speaker 2: down and miss opportunities, you know, and not be the
- 28:15Speaker 2: first to speak up if I knew the answer or
- 28:16Speaker 2: something or pass the buck too often. And that's a false.
- 28:21Speaker 2: That's like a false modesty.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Oh, shoot.
- 28:23Speaker 1: No, no, no. It's really pretending to, it's like, oh,
- 28:26Speaker 1: let me let you see me be modest.
- 28:29Speaker 2: And it's bullshit. It's, you're lying. It's kind of cocky
- 28:35Speaker 2: in reverse. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

- 32:01Speaker 1: but try not to be too crazy where you're sitting
- 32:03Speaker 1: there just thinking about yourself all the time.
- 32:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:05Speaker 1: It's all like, it's all pretty fascinating, man. I mean,
- 32:09Speaker 1: and there's a lot of good stuff in this book.
- 32:10Speaker 1: I'm trying to think of some of the parts that
- 32:11Speaker 1: I really liked. You write that courage is often one
- 32:15Speaker 1: more step.
- 32:16Speaker 2: In the right direction.
- 32:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 32:19Speaker 1: And you talk about that in marriage, faith, and character.
- 32:26Speaker 1: And yeah, I thought that that was pretty interesting because, yeah,
- 32:30Speaker 1: there's times where I stall. That's where I stall sometimes.
- 32:34Speaker 1: I stall with that, like, I don't know what this
- 32:37Speaker 1: is going to be like. I don't know what this
- 32:39Speaker 1: is going to feel like. I already don't like the
- 32:41Speaker 1: feeling of this, right? It happens to me a lot
- 32:44Speaker 1: with like commitment and relationships and stuff. it happens to
- 32:47Speaker 1: me a lot and like try not to control the
- 32:49Speaker 1: outcome of, of like even a moment, right? Like, God,
- 32:55Speaker 1: I just, you know, to have a little bit of
- 32:58Speaker 1: courage there to be like, well, let's see what this, right.
- 33:02Speaker 2: What would one step more take me deeper into debt
- 33:05Speaker 2: or am I gonna, or is it gonna, am I
- 33:08Speaker 2: going to power through and get to the other side
- 33:10Speaker 2: of it and go.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 33:11Speaker 2: I stuck with it. Now I see it. Now I
- 33:13Speaker 2: see the light. I like this. I'm, It's a really
- 33:17Speaker 2: interesting measurement I think we always got to do, man.
- 33:19Speaker 2: I mean, I try to measure like there's no fear.
- 33:26Speaker 2: I was always like, what do you mean no fear?
- 33:27Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 33:28Speaker 2: There's a lot of stuff I fear. There's a lot
- 33:29Speaker 2: of stuff I think we all should fear. It's what
- 33:33Speaker 2: things do we go, no, but I'm going to have
- 33:34Speaker 2: the courage to go. I'm overcoming that fear. But there's
- 33:37Speaker 2: good and there's bad fears. Meaning like if I'm reading
- 33:39Speaker 2: a script and I kind of like the script, but man,
- 33:44Speaker 2: I'm not sure about the director and this financing doesn't
- 33:47Speaker 2: have enough money behind it. Can we really make this
- 33:49Speaker 2: a good movie? And I'm not going to be, I'm
- 33:53Speaker 2: kind of scared of that. I think maybe, okay, maybe
- 33:55Speaker 2: that's a healthy fear you got there, McConaughey, because the
- 33:57Speaker 2: pedigree around it may not be as excellent as you want.
- 33:59Speaker 1: It to be.
- 34:00Speaker 2: There's other times, I don't know, say where you see
- 34:03Speaker 2: a character, man, I like the directors on it, man.
- 34:06Speaker 2: We got good financing behind us. Production value is going
- 34:09Speaker 2: to be good. The script's damn good. And I'm looking
- 34:11Speaker 2: at this character going, I am scared shitless about, How
- 34:15Speaker 2: am I going to pull this off? Well, okay. I
- 34:17Speaker 2: would subscribe that maybe that's a good fear that I
- 34:21Speaker 2: need to dive in and go, well, let's go find out.
- 34:24Speaker 2: But don't back off of that one because that one,
- 34:26Speaker 2: and then I'll see the movie two years later. I'm like, oh,
- 34:28Speaker 2: it was great. And look at that part that that
- 34:30Speaker 2: other guy got to play. And then I'm kicking myself going,
- 34:34Speaker 2: you didn't have the huevos and the will to go
- 34:36Speaker 2: sit there and go find out? McConaughey, come on, man.
- 34:39Speaker 2: You know what I mean? So it's measuring the good
- 34:41Speaker 2: ones and the bad ones. You say you got a
- 34:42Speaker 2: bad feeling if you already have a bad feeling. Look,
- 34:46Speaker 2: I do think this, man. My brother Rooster says this.
- 34:48Speaker 2: He goes, man, if everybody only did what they love
- 34:51Speaker 2: to do, there'd be a whole lot of unemployment. Yeah.
- 34:54Speaker 2: You know what I mean? I mean, sometimes it does suck,
- 35:00Speaker 2: and you got to do some hard things. You're like, man,
- 35:02Speaker 2: I'm not. I'm not. This doesn't feel right. Now, does
- 35:05Speaker 2: it not feel right or do we just not like it?
- 35:07Speaker 2: A lot of things I got to do that we
- 35:09Speaker 2: got to do that we don't like to do to
- 35:11Speaker 2: get to the other side and go, well, you know,
- 35:13Speaker 2: especially as we get older, we got things that we've
- 35:15Speaker 2: invested in. family and friends and relationships, our own self.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Those are some fires that we've been putting logs on
- 35:21Speaker 2: for a while. And it can be hard sometimes to
- 35:24Speaker 2: sit there and keep tending those fires or keep tending
- 35:26Speaker 2: those gardens we're talking about, right? On our own soul.
- 35:29Speaker 2: But you sit there and you go, I believe that
- 35:31Speaker 2: if I do the hard work now and break this
- 35:34Speaker 2: sweat and draw some blood to make this work, which sucks.
- 35:37Speaker 2: I'm going to get to the other side. It's a
- 35:39Speaker 2: sacrifice I'm willing to take to get to the other
- 35:40Speaker 2: side and go, oh, there we go. All right, there
- 35:43Speaker 2: we go. Now I can sleep better. Now I can
- 35:45Speaker 2: wake up going, yep, I'm still connected to what I
- 35:47Speaker 2: created in the past for myself. I did the next
- 35:49Speaker 2: right thing for myself. And it sucked. But damn it,
- 35:53Speaker 2: that's right there where I could have backed off and retreated.
- 35:55Speaker 2: I could have said, oh, I smell smoke. Going to
- 35:58Speaker 2: be fire. Well, sometimes it's like, no, it's smoke. Maybe
- 36:00Speaker 2: go put out the damn fire before it turns into one.
- 36:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:03Speaker 2: That's what I mean.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Or let's procure this fire a little bit, make a
- 36:05Speaker 1: little bit of barbecue for the future. Yeah.
- 36:07Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 36:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I do. Well, I think also it's like it
- 36:10Speaker 1: creates linchpins in your life. Like some of those things
- 36:12Speaker 1: you're saying, like even like with family and stuff and
- 36:15Speaker 1: being willing to do that, right? And be like, okay,
- 36:17Speaker 1: this is a project that my wife and I, my
- 36:20Speaker 1: partner and I are going to create together. You know,
- 36:22Speaker 1: did you have fears about like that at certain points
- 36:25Speaker 1: in your life of like starting a family and committing
- 36:27Speaker 1: to that and doing that?
- 36:28Speaker 2: Was that kind of tough? So look, the one thing,
- 36:32Speaker 2: I always knew who I wanted to be was a dad.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Eight years old. Good story. So, you know, dad had
- 36:38Speaker 2: introduced me to a lot of his male friends through life. And,
- 36:40Speaker 2: you know, I'd shake their hand, look them in the eye,
- 36:43Speaker 2: and nice to meet you, sir. Sir, sir, sir was
- 36:45Speaker 2: a big thing in our family. And I remember I
- 36:48Speaker 2: was eight years old. We were in an Oak Forest
- 36:50Speaker 2: Country Club parking lot. Hello, Longview, Texas. And I met
- 36:56Speaker 2: these two men. They were both in black slacks, white shirts,
- 37:00Speaker 2: and black jackets. And one of them had shades on.
- 37:04Speaker 2: And as I was shaking their hands, I remember the
- 37:06Speaker 2: sunlight was behind me. It was kind of in my eyes.
- 37:08Speaker 2: I was like, nice to meet you, sir. Nice to
- 37:09Speaker 2: meet you, sir. It hit me in my eight-year-old mind
- 37:12Speaker 2: at that time that, oh, and they were talking about their,
- 37:16Speaker 2: they started talking about their own children. And it hit
- 37:18Speaker 2: me in my eight-year-old mind that, oh, all the people
- 37:20Speaker 2: I've shaken, all that my dad's introduced me to, that
- 37:22Speaker 2: I shook their hands and said, sir, to were fathers.
- 37:26Speaker 2: And in my eight-year-old mind, I went, oh, that's how
- 37:29Speaker 2: you succeed in life. And it, you know, whether I'm
- 37:34Speaker 2: malapropter or that was the meaning I gave it, it was,
- 37:36Speaker 2: it stuck with me. And it was, it was always
- 37:39Speaker 2: been my measurement of what successful life would be as
- 37:43Speaker 2: a man to become a father and to then help
- 37:46Speaker 2: raise kids. So I knew I always wanted to be
- 37:48Speaker 2: a father. Now, then you get to, can you, you know,
- 37:52Speaker 2: meet a woman that you're in love with and that,
- 37:55Speaker 2: you know, is going to be a great mother, you know,
- 37:59Speaker 2: to them. I fortunately did. met that woman in Camilla. So, but,
- 38:04Speaker 2: but we didn't get married right off the bat. We were,
- 38:07Speaker 2: and maybe this is because my mom and dad were
- 38:09Speaker 2: married three times, divorced twice. And her mom and dad
- 38:13Speaker 2: were married two times and divorced three times. So we
- 38:17Speaker 2: had a track record for reason to go like, yeah, yeah,
- 38:21Speaker 2: a whole lot. So we're rolling along, man. And saying,
- 38:26Speaker 2: it's going great. And we don't want to get married.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Cause that's just what you're supposed to do. I don't
- 38:31Speaker 2: want to back into it because someone goes, legally, it's wrong,
- 38:33Speaker 2: but no, bullshit. I want to want to. And I
- 38:35Speaker 2: didn't really want to. I wasn't against it, but her
- 38:38Speaker 2: and I were like, we're doing good. We have our
- 38:40Speaker 2: first child. Or let me go back to nine months
- 38:43Speaker 2: before we have our first child. I come home, and
- 38:46Speaker 2: there's cheeseburgers she's cooking on the grill. I smell them.
- 38:48Speaker 2: She pours me a double of my favorite tequila. I
- 38:51Speaker 2: sit down, and she gives me a gift. I open
- 38:53Speaker 2: it up. It's the, what do you call it, the sonogram,
- 38:55Speaker 2: whatever gram that is where you see in the belly
- 38:57Speaker 2: you got a baby and a fetus. She's pregnant. Oh,
- 39:00Speaker 2: my gosh. Cry, tears, we hug it out. Oh, my God,
- 39:04Speaker 2: this is so awesome, et cetera, et cetera. Let's call
- 39:07Speaker 2: my mom. Tell her the good news. I get my
- 39:10Speaker 2: phone out. Call mom. Camilla's sitting next to me. Mom,
- 39:13Speaker 2: you there? We got some great news to tell you.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Got you on speakerphone. Can you hear? Camilla is here. Hi, Camilla. Hi, Ms. McConaughey.
- 39:19Speaker 2: How are you? Mom, you there? You got to meet? Yeah, yeah,
- 39:21Speaker 2: I'm listening. I can't wait. Tell me, tell me, tell me. Mom,
- 39:25Speaker 2: Camilla's pregnant.
- 39:28Speaker 1: Crickets. Crickets.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Our next thing here is, no, no, no, no, no, Matthew.
- 39:38Speaker 2: This is out of order. I didn't raise you to
- 39:41Speaker 2: do this. No, Matthew. You're supposed to be married and
- 39:45Speaker 2: went on and on and on in a five-minute monologue
- 39:48Speaker 2: and then hung up. And I stop, I look over
- 39:51Speaker 2: at Camille and she looks at me and we're like,
- 39:53Speaker 2: oh shit, that didn't go the way we hoped it would.
- 39:58Speaker 2: And so, you know, let's top off that drink. You
- 40:01Speaker 2: know what I mean? Woo, okay. 10 minutes later, the
- 40:05Speaker 2: phone rings. It's my mom. Yeah, I'm mom. She goes, hi, Matthew. Mom, speakerphone.
- 40:12Speaker 2: I go, I can put you on speakerphone.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Okay.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Is Camille there? Yeah, she's right.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Hey, Ms.
- 40:15Speaker 2: McConaughey.
- 40:15Speaker 1: Okay.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Can y'all both hear me? Yeah, we hear you, mom.
- 40:17Speaker 2: We hear you, Ms. McConaughey.
- 40:18Speaker 3: Okay.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Um, I would like to put some white out over
- 40:23Speaker 2: that last round. I was being selfish thinking about myself.
- 40:28Speaker 2: If you two are happy about it, I should be
- 40:30Speaker 2: happy for you. It's not my place to be unhappy.
- 40:33Speaker 2: So we had two children before we got married. But yeah,
- 40:37Speaker 2: I mean, look, the big project, you know, as far
- 40:41Speaker 2: as I can tell, the one that's non-negotiable, that's the thing.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Can we find non-negotiable projects? There we go.
- 40:46Speaker 5: Nope.
- 40:46Speaker 2: When I'm lost and don't know what the hell I'm doing.
- 40:49Speaker 2: or I'm looking for my North Star, what are some
- 40:51Speaker 2: things in our life that we can look at and go,
- 40:53Speaker 2: if I concentrate on that, I can't go wrong. Sometimes
- 40:55Speaker 2: that's just it. I still have it now. Maybe I
- 40:58Speaker 2: don't know what new things I want to do, and
- 41:00Speaker 2: when I'm kind of lost and wobbly, I'll try to
- 41:03Speaker 2: look at the things that I go, like family, like fatherhood,
- 41:08Speaker 2: like the marriage, and go, if you work on that, McConaughey,
- 41:12Speaker 2: you can't bogey. You may not eagle the hole, but
- 41:17Speaker 2: you're not going to bogey. And you definitely ain't going
- 41:19Speaker 2: to hit one out of bounds. You can't spend too
- 41:21Speaker 2: much time on that in your spare time. And then
- 41:24Speaker 2: that'll help you spiritually, heart and head. And so I
- 41:27Speaker 2: try to go to the non-negotiables when I'm like, and
- 41:30Speaker 2: then when things are going well, that's another thing. I
- 41:33Speaker 2: love to accomplish it, man. I love to go work
- 41:35Speaker 2: and I'm going, all of a sudden I'm hitting the road.
- 41:37Speaker 2: I'm all over the place. how do I keep my
- 41:39Speaker 2: marriage and my fatherhood out of the debit section?
- 41:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:42Speaker 2: How do I, you know, cause I'm don't have the
- 41:45Speaker 2: time as much time. That's another challenge when things are
- 41:48Speaker 2: going well personally, you know, to take care of those non-negotiables.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I think a lot, like if
- 41:55Speaker 1: I don't know what to do, I try and yeah.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Like it's always like help others, you know, like that's
- 41:59Speaker 1: the thing, like that's probably been the thing that's been
- 42:02Speaker 1: most helpful in my life. If I don't know what
- 42:04Speaker 1: to do whenever, you know, um, It's trying to help others.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Think of somebody else. Call somebody else. See what they're doing.
- 42:11Speaker 1: Get out of myself.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Yeah, heard, heard.
- 42:13Speaker 1: There's like that prayer. It's like, God, I offer myself
- 42:19Speaker 1: to thee to build with me and do with me
- 42:20Speaker 1: as thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self
- 42:23Speaker 1: and take away my difficulties so that, like... I don't
- 42:30Speaker 1: remember the end of.
- 42:31Speaker 2: It right now. Leave me of the bondage to myself.
- 42:33Speaker 2: Leave me of it, off it.
- 42:34Speaker 1: Third step prayer it is. Yeah, offer myself to thee
- 42:37Speaker 1: to build with me and do with me as thou wilt.
- 42:38Speaker 1: Relieve me of the bondage of thyself that I may
- 42:40Speaker 1: better do thy will. That's it.
- 42:41Speaker 2: There we go.
- 42:42Speaker 1: So it's just like, yeah, God, my problem is me
- 42:45Speaker 1: right now. I'm just so, I'm sitting here, I'm breaking
- 42:48Speaker 1: myself up and putting myself into a joint and smoking myself.
- 42:51Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? I'm just getting high. There's
- 42:53Speaker 1: something here. And it can be a low point or
- 42:55Speaker 1: a high point though. That's the thing. Sometimes I think
- 42:57Speaker 1: it's like, I've thought it's just the lows, but it's
- 43:00Speaker 1: like- Even if I get too high on myself, it's like,
- 43:02Speaker 1: that's not good either, you know?
- 43:03Speaker 2: Well, it keeps our pursuit not about that. It's talking
- 43:07Speaker 2: to the godliness within us, the more godlikeness in us
- 43:12Speaker 2: that we can be, that a lot of us are
- 43:14Speaker 2: striving to be. That pursuit is such a valuable pursuit,
- 43:18Speaker 2: you know, religious or not. To have a connection to
- 43:22Speaker 2: a creator, yeah, to not feel- That's higher.
- 43:25Speaker 3: Right.
- 43:25Speaker 2: That you're not going to reach, but you're going.
- 43:28Speaker 1: I mean, otherwise I would feel so homeless. I don't
- 43:31Speaker 1: want my soul to feel homeless, you know?
- 43:32Speaker 2: There's a lot of people that feel very homeless.
- 43:35Speaker 1: Well, you talk about just like your own like times
- 43:38Speaker 1: of faith and like how hard it, you know, it's
- 43:40Speaker 1: tough to keep that connection going, you know, and to
- 43:44Speaker 1: work on it more. It's tough.
- 43:45Speaker 2: It takes maintenance, doesn't it?
- 43:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it takes a lot of maintenance, man. That's probably
- 43:48Speaker 1: my biggest.
- 43:49Speaker 2: That's where my ego will get out of control where
- 43:51Speaker 2: all of a sudden I start, I take for granted that,
- 43:56Speaker 2: I didn't just pull it all off of my own.
- 43:58Speaker 2: And I start thinking I did. And I do the
- 44:00Speaker 2: math and go, like, I mean, I did. And all
- 44:02Speaker 2: of a sudden it's like, ooh, here comes humble pie
- 44:05Speaker 2: pretty soon.
- 44:07Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. I mean, that's a tough thing. I mean,
- 44:09Speaker 1: having a relationship with our creator and giving ourselves, like saying, God,
- 44:14Speaker 1: you know, giving thanks, getting a good perspective for ourselves. Um,
- 44:18Speaker 1: have you, has there been practices that you've used realistically
- 44:22Speaker 1: over the years? I'm sure once you have a family
- 44:23Speaker 1: and stuff like that, some of that starts to maybe
- 44:25Speaker 1: get more built into you. Um, but just because it's,
- 44:29Speaker 1: there's a vision, there's a, there's an actual component that's
- 44:32Speaker 1: right there alive. Yeah. But have you noticed for yourself, um, uh.
- 44:36Speaker 2: There's a, having, having kiddos is in some ways are, are,
- 44:46Speaker 2: how we become immortal if we're fortunate enough for them
- 44:51Speaker 2: to outlive us.
- 44:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:52Speaker 2: And if we're fortunate enough for them to have kids
- 44:54Speaker 2: and pass on a lineage. It's like you first have
- 44:56Speaker 2: a kid, you're like, I have helped create a being
- 44:59Speaker 2: that is outside of myself, but my blood is in them. Yeah.
- 45:03Speaker 2: It's a certain way to immortality. And I don't mean
- 45:08Speaker 2: in the religious sense of, oh, if you live this way,
- 45:10Speaker 2: you live forever because you get to the gates and
- 45:12Speaker 2: the kingdom of heaven.
- 45:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:14Speaker 2: But it is a mortal way of going, no, it's
- 45:16Speaker 2: kind of evolutionary-wise. It's a way to become immortal. And
- 45:19Speaker 2: I find there's a great power in that and a
- 45:22Speaker 2: great freedom and responsibility that comes with that because you're
- 45:25Speaker 2: shepherding your future self through your child or what you're,
- 45:30Speaker 2: you know, for 18 years, so to speak, generally in
- 45:33Speaker 2: the household before they go off into the world. So
- 45:38Speaker 2: you're taking care of yourself.
- 45:39Speaker 1: Right, in a weird way. Like a chunk of yourself.
- 45:42Speaker 2: By taking care of your It's our greatest, children, I mean,
- 45:45Speaker 2: it's our greatest export. And it is the most closest thing,
- 45:48Speaker 2: piece of art in the world that we'll ever put out.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Yeah. You know? Yeah, that's pretty fascinating.
- 45:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Do you and your family, do you have any traditions
- 45:59Speaker 1: that really mean a lot to you guys that you
- 46:01Speaker 1: have felt like have helped you establish more of a sense,
- 46:05Speaker 1: like a familiar sense, like a team sense kind of?
- 46:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean. My wife's better than my family ever
- 46:14Speaker 2: was on the actual rituals. I mean, my family's like,
- 46:17Speaker 2: everyone come over for Thanksgiving. We're going. And it's like
- 46:19Speaker 2: swing by the pit and get some food while you're
- 46:22Speaker 2: at it. And we're going to sit down. Well, not
- 46:24Speaker 2: unless everyone wants to sit down. My wife's like, no,
- 46:28Speaker 2: I'm setting the table.
- 46:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 46:30Speaker 2: And we're sitting down and doing this. And we're going
- 46:32Speaker 2: to say prayers before and everyone's going to go around.
- 46:34Speaker 2: That's one of the things we like to do. Call
- 46:36Speaker 2: it around the horn. Everybody, before we share something out loud,
- 46:40Speaker 2: something to think for.
- 46:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:42Speaker 2: Share it up. And at very least out there, it
- 46:45Speaker 2: at least makes the food taste better.
- 46:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:48Speaker 2: At least. But it also is a great conversation starter
- 46:51Speaker 2: because you'll say things and a lot of people don't
- 46:54Speaker 2: like to share them out loud. And it'll start a
- 46:56Speaker 2: conversation with somebody that you didn't know. Why do you
- 46:57Speaker 2: say you're thankful for that thing? Oh, I didn't know
- 47:00Speaker 2: your grandmother just got out of the hospital. Oh, I
- 47:02Speaker 2: didn't know that you did good on that test last
- 47:05Speaker 2: Tuesday and you're thankful for that. And it's a great
- 47:08Speaker 2: way to get a conversation started. We do. We practice that.
- 47:12Speaker 2: We have dinner each night. It's a small ritual, but
- 47:19Speaker 2: in the busy worlds of today. It's huge. To have
- 47:22Speaker 2: that down and everyone comes in and you hear a
- 47:26Speaker 2: little bit about the day. And it's kind of like
- 47:30Speaker 2: the team gets together. And I was talking to my kids.
- 47:33Speaker 2: We were talking to kids about it the other day.
- 47:35Speaker 2: I was like, look, talk about these bonfires we have.
- 47:38Speaker 2: Our family, we're calling it a bonfire. Not a campfire. Bonfire,
- 47:41Speaker 2: boys and girls. Let's go, man. This is non-negotiable. We
- 47:45Speaker 2: created it. We're on our way. We think we're doing
- 47:47Speaker 2: all right. Let's keep putting log wood on this fire.
- 47:49Speaker 2: But you three kiddos, you're responsible for going and chopping
- 47:53Speaker 2: wood here, too, and bringing the log back to the fire.
- 47:56Speaker 2: It's not just me and your mama.
- 47:57Speaker 5: Right.
- 47:58Speaker 2: That are doing that. It takes, it's talking about back
- 48:02Speaker 2: to sports. We were in the very beginning. It's a
- 48:03Speaker 2: team effort here.
- 48:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:05Speaker 2: Y'all got to start adding that.
- 48:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:07Speaker 2: And take the, and take the, have the confidence yourself
- 48:09Speaker 2: that you do have a log to add to this fire.
- 48:12Speaker 3: Right.
- 48:13Speaker 1: I think encouraging your, like encouraging kids to think and
- 48:16Speaker 1: feel like that. It's important, you know, because kids don't
- 48:18Speaker 1: know how to think and feel. I think there's like
- 48:19Speaker 1: this understanding that people just know what feelings are and
- 48:23Speaker 1: what's happening. And like, what their responsibility is as a
- 48:25Speaker 1: brother or a son. It's like a lot of that
- 48:28Speaker 1: stuff has to really be kind of instilled, I think.
- 48:30Speaker 2: I think you're right, because I'm guilty of giving the
- 48:35Speaker 2: Cliff Notes version of things to a kid sometimes where
- 48:38Speaker 2: they're like, I think it's like, well, duh, you understand that,
- 48:43Speaker 2: you know what I mean? Like little things, man. How
- 48:47Speaker 2: do you wipe your butt? You know what I mean?
- 48:49Speaker 2: What's deodorant for? You know what I mean? Little things
- 48:51Speaker 2: you're like, well, duh. And like, no, how would I know?
- 48:52Speaker 1: Yeah, if you're wiping your butt with deodorant, it's going
- 48:54Speaker 1: to burn.
- 48:54Speaker 2: You know, how would I know? You know, things you've
- 48:57Speaker 2: got to let them know.
- 48:58Speaker 1: Yeah, there's that extra step a lot of times. And
- 49:01Speaker 1: I think we think that kids are just adults sometimes.
- 49:04Speaker 2: Or they saw it somewhere, they picked it up.
- 49:07Speaker 1: Yes, that they already know.
- 49:08Speaker 2: Because that's the other thing. You do find out a
- 49:10Speaker 2: lot of things that they did pick up that you
- 49:11Speaker 2: didn't know they knew.
- 49:12Speaker 1: Right, and then you start to be like, oh, well,
- 49:13Speaker 1: and you try to help them anyway, and they're like,
- 49:15Speaker 1: I already know this. So it's like, probably a little catch,
- 49:17Speaker 1: a little bit of a catch-22.
- 49:17Speaker 2: But there's a whole lot of things that, yeah, they
- 49:19Speaker 2: don't know. You know, it's, in our frame, one of
- 49:24Speaker 2: the things is, when are the kids ready for this
- 49:30Speaker 2: type of movie?
- 49:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:32Speaker 2: Or PG or an R or something. And I'm just,
- 49:35Speaker 2: and what content is in there? I just don't want...
- 49:40Speaker 2: There's some certain things in life about love, about violence,
- 49:47Speaker 2: about all the ways of the world that I don't
- 49:51Speaker 2: necessarily want my kids to get it from an outside
- 49:54Speaker 2: piece of entertainment before they have a context of understanding
- 49:58Speaker 2: it from me and their mother.
- 50:00Speaker 1: For sure.
- 50:00Speaker 2: Let them understand it. first before seeing it for the
- 50:05Speaker 2: first time and their emotions are going all over the
- 50:08Speaker 2: place for pleasure or pain, but they don't know what
- 50:10Speaker 2: it all means.
- 50:11Speaker 3: Right.
- 50:11Speaker 2: Or does that happen? Well, I want the context coming
- 50:16Speaker 2: from their mom and dad first so they can then
- 50:19Speaker 2: see it and go, I understand that was realistically, however
- 50:22Speaker 2: realistically that was done and how that affected me. But
- 50:24Speaker 2: I understand the context of what that scene I just saw.
- 50:28Speaker 2: And that's why I try to hold back certain content,
- 50:31Speaker 2: you know, Oh, I think it makes sense. From the
- 50:33Speaker 2: kids to have just an understanding of the reality so
- 50:37Speaker 2: you can at least appreciate it but know that that's fiction.
- 50:39Speaker 3: Right.
- 50:40Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to be a keeper. You got to
- 50:42Speaker 1: be a keeper. You're running the kennel when you're doing that.
- 50:48Speaker 1: If I could go back in time, one thing I
- 50:50Speaker 1: would start to do would be to start saving my
- 50:52Speaker 1: money a little bit earlier. Even if it was just

- 54:23Speaker 1: slash T-H-E-O. I was in, I was at Ole Miss, dude.
- 54:29Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin's crazy. That guy's absolutely crazy, dude. He took
- 54:31Speaker 1: me to yoga class, right? He goes to this yoga class.
- 54:34Speaker 1: I'm in there, right? And he, I think he's, he
- 54:37Speaker 1: has the heat on his phone. He's hijacked the heat
- 54:39Speaker 1: system and like this. So he's sitting over there.
- 54:42Speaker 2: Pumping up the heat?
- 54:43Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, just like.
- 54:44Speaker 2: Hot yoga?
- 54:45Speaker 1: Like Putin over there. Yeah. He's got it way hot though.
- 54:47Speaker 1: And he's fucking, he's even holding a lighter in there,
- 54:49Speaker 1: like adding a little bit of heat to the room.
- 54:51Speaker 1: But at one point he's like wandering around and just
- 54:54Speaker 1: like saying things to people and whispering like affirmations.
- 54:56Speaker 2: Wait, is he, is he in the class or is
- 54:58Speaker 2: he teaching the class?
- 54:59Speaker 1: He's in it. He's not the teacher. Okay. And the
- 55:02Speaker 1: teacher has like the microphone thing on and she's kind
- 55:04Speaker 1: of pointing at him every now and then. There's a
- 55:07Speaker 1: picture that we just put up yesterday from, and I
- 55:09Speaker 1: don't know if you can even see it. It might
- 55:10Speaker 1: be out there somewhere.
- 55:12Speaker 2: Can you raise it up a little bit? I can
- 55:13Speaker 2: only see his head. And this seems like a shot
- 55:15Speaker 2: you got to see out.
- 55:16Speaker 1: Okay. That's lame. But find the other photo too, if
- 55:18Speaker 1: you can, Nick. But he's, dude, he comes in, he
- 55:21Speaker 1: puts a peppermint in my mouth, dude. And his hand
- 55:24Speaker 1: kind of even touched my lips a little bit. And
- 55:27Speaker 1: I don't even, I mean, we're both straight males, you know,
- 55:29Speaker 1: I mean, as a family, I hope to have a family,
- 55:31Speaker 1: but he just like, I'm like, and I'm in there sweating, dying,
- 55:35Speaker 1: basically trying to look okay, you know? And sorry I
- 55:38Speaker 1: wear a towel like that. I was raised by a
- 55:39Speaker 1: single mom.
- 55:40Speaker 2: Oh, this is you over on the right?
- 55:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:42Speaker 2: Is this post-peppermint?
- 55:44Speaker 1: It's post-peppermint, yeah. But, I mean, Lane is crazy, though, dude.
- 55:50Speaker 1: He has these weird rituals and stuff in there, and he'll, like,
- 55:53Speaker 1: bounce a golf ball. It's like people, it's like dead,
- 55:57Speaker 1: and he'll bounce a golf ball across the, he's just
- 56:00Speaker 1: doing bizarre stuff in there.
- 56:01Speaker 2: Does he have a method to it? Is he doing
- 56:03Speaker 2: it for?
- 56:03Speaker 1: It is. It's just we, I can't. It's like he's
- 56:08Speaker 1: some sweat Moliere or something, you know? I don't know
- 56:10Speaker 1: what he's doing, but it's just amazing over there. But
- 56:14Speaker 1: he just always likes to be involved and causing, having
- 56:18Speaker 1: an effect, right? So that's what I noticed about him,
- 56:21Speaker 1: and it's interesting, and it's fascinating.
- 56:22Speaker 2: Is he a trickster, or is he a sort of,
- 56:26Speaker 2: as you said, he's just going to throw in some
- 56:28Speaker 2: color commentary on the situation. He's going to give a
- 56:30Speaker 2: different color.
- 56:31Speaker 1: He's very colorful.
- 56:32Speaker 2: Okay.
- 56:33Speaker 1: But he's got a big heart. He'll make sure that
- 56:35Speaker 1: everything's taken care of. He's on top of everything, right?
- 56:38Speaker 1: But I think he likes to be very colorful and stuff.
- 56:41Speaker 1: But we had a great time over there. Anyway, this
- 56:42Speaker 1: was just an experience that we had where he goes
- 56:44Speaker 1: to these yoga class every single day, and he never misses.
- 56:48Speaker 1: And it was just, yeah, it was a great experience.
- 56:51Speaker 1: I mean, I had to lay down for a little
- 56:52Speaker 1: while and some, The girl was like, do you need CPR?
- 56:54Speaker 1: And I'm like, no, I don't fucking need CPR.
- 56:57Speaker 2: Just taking a rest.
- 56:59Speaker 1: I'm just taking a rest with my eyes closed.
- 57:01Speaker 2: You look like you went through it, man. You look like.
- 57:04Speaker 1: Well, I was laying there like this for a little
- 57:05Speaker 1: while because I wasn't doing really good. And yeah, I
- 57:09Speaker 1: didn't black out, but I like light browned out or whatever.
- 57:11Speaker 1: But it was like, I'm fine. But anyway, yeah. But
- 57:15Speaker 1: it was just fascinating over there, man, just to be
- 57:16Speaker 1: over there. And we got to walk through the, like
- 57:18Speaker 1: the walk thing. that they do up to the stadium,
- 57:22Speaker 1: and that was pretty crazy. I mean, yeah, they're just...
- 57:25Speaker 1: That fan base is pretty rabid. I didn't realize how
- 57:27Speaker 1: special it was over there in Oxford.
- 57:29Speaker 2: I didn't realize. They got it going on right now, man.
- 57:30Speaker 1: Yeah, they got it going on. I think they're going
- 57:31Speaker 1: to make the CFP. I'm hoping Vanderbilt makes it in.
- 57:34Speaker 1: I don't think that they're going to.
- 57:35Speaker 2: Well, what did y'all... Y'all lost two?
- 57:38Speaker 1: We lost two, yeah.
- 57:38Speaker 2: To us and to.
- 57:40Speaker 1: Alabama.
- 57:41Speaker 2: Alabama. All right, that ain't... But they need a big win,
- 57:44Speaker 2: you know?
- 57:44Speaker 1: We need a big win.
- 57:45Speaker 2: Who do you got left?
- 57:47Speaker 1: We still have Tennessee... We have Kentucky next weekend, and
- 57:49Speaker 1: then we have Tennessee.
- 57:50Speaker 2: All right. You clear those two. With a two-loss season,
- 57:54Speaker 2: you're most likely in. Well, look, we just have Sanford
- 58:00Speaker 2: Stadium down in Georgia. Got it handed to us.
- 58:04Speaker 1: You were down there at the UGA. What's that like
- 58:06Speaker 1: over there at Athens? I never remember between the hedges.
- 58:08Speaker 1: It was great. It was?
- 58:10Speaker 2: I had never heard Sanford Stadium between the hedges as
- 58:14Speaker 2: being like one of the places. Whoa, it's really hard. Oh, yeah, man.
- 58:18Speaker 2: was it 90,000? And those fans are in unison, man.
- 58:24Speaker 2: And they had, I tell you what, I get to
- 58:27Speaker 2: measure stadiums, right, when I go to them. Like, what's
- 58:31Speaker 2: the fan base?
- 58:32Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, it's amazing.
- 58:33Speaker 2: How happy are they that I'm there compared to how
- 58:36Speaker 2: much did they like, F you, McConaughey, we're going to
- 58:40Speaker 2: get it, you know what I mean?
- 58:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 58:41Speaker 2: And this crowd was loud from the beginning. especially that
- 58:46Speaker 2: first half, and then the second half when they started
- 58:48Speaker 2: to boat roll, they were still really– but they were
- 58:52Speaker 2: one of the higher decibels that I've heard. But they
- 58:55Speaker 2: were continuous is the thing, especially any time that we
- 59:00Speaker 2: were on offense. But the– because you get crowds that
- 59:04Speaker 2: are in unison. They know the chance.
- 59:06Speaker 1: Auburn does a good job of that, being in unison. Yeah.
- 59:09Speaker 2: It's a big thing. You can have 30,000 more people,
- 59:11Speaker 2: but if you, if, if, if the rituals and the
- 59:13Speaker 2: cheers aren't in unison, it doesn't, it doesn't, it's not
- 59:16Speaker 2: as intimidating at all. Um, and yeah, they were happy
- 59:19Speaker 2: I was there, but they were also giving me straight
- 59:22Speaker 2: horns down and going, we're going to whip your tonight,
- 59:25Speaker 2: you know what I mean? So it was a good,
- 59:27Speaker 2: it was a good, uh, it was a, healthy hate
- 59:29Speaker 2: they have.
- 59:30Speaker 1: I love that.
- 59:31Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Because I've been to some,
- 59:34Speaker 2: some visiting.
- 59:36Speaker 1: And they get a little edgy?
- 59:38Speaker 2: Oh, no, I got some, and I won't say their
- 59:40Speaker 2: names on that. I got some that, dude, I'm dodging loogies.
- 59:44Speaker 1: Yeah. You're dodging those tomatoes you were throwing at her.
- 59:46Speaker 3: Yeah, dude.
- 59:47Speaker 2: And they're like, yeah, yeah, yeah. And I was like,
- 59:50Speaker 2: here we go. Okay, and I've been to others.
- 59:52Speaker 1: They're like, it's time to kill us now, buddy.
- 59:54Speaker 2: Whatever, you know. And then I've been to some where
- 59:56Speaker 2: it's like, They're too nice to me. I'm like, uh-oh,
- 59:58Speaker 2: y'all are in trouble.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Dude, how great is it, though? Is there anything better
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: than being a college football fan? I don't know if
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: there is. It's great.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: And the SEC is one of the best forms of
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: tribalism in the world.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: I love hearing that. I think I agree with you.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: I didn't know. I toured so much, I'd never gotten
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: to have the fall off. So the past, I've been
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: in nine games this year, I think. from different stadiums.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: Probably five of them were at Vanderbilt Stadium. But it's
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: just been amazing, dude. Like, to go to Alabama, to
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: go to Virginia Tech, to go, we're going to go
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: to Neyland in a week or two, to be at
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: Ole Miss yesterday. You had to just see some of
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: it and just that, like, what it's about for them
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: in those places.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: Well, and, you know, Athens, that's basically just college town.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: And they were just, the fans were great. And they
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: were loud and they were rabid. But, To go, one
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: of the things I love about being in the SEC,
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: I can't wait to go, you know, been in Tuscaloosa.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: I've been, I can't wait to go to Death Valley
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: LSU on a night game when we go there. Because
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: I've only been there once and they played Vanderbilt when
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: Vanderbilt was a doormat.
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: Not the Vanderbilt now.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: And so that was a good experience, but that wasn't
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: a great Death Valley experience. I still, I can't wait
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: to get over to Tennessee.
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: Yeah. That's a beautiful place. That, I think, might be
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: the most beautiful place to see a game is that
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Neyland Stadium. But I haven't been to see a game
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: at Austin. I want to go see that. I know
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: that Rogan and Tony Hinchcliffe went one time. You might
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: have went to that same game that they went to.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Most of them I'm over there on the sidelines, yeah.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: That's so cool, man. Yeah. Yeah, I just feel lucky to,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: first of all, even just get to be around some
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: of the teams, to be that close to that energy,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: that young. If you stay around young people, it just
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: keeps you young. It's like there's something that's like, I
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: don't know. It's just, it's energy. That's how energy works.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: And I still have to remind myself how young these
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: young men are.
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: You know?
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: And, you know, it's like, because they're so damn big,
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: you know? And then you look and you go, oh,
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: you're 18. Yeah.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: 18.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: When was that? You know? Got to go back and
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: do the math, you know what I mean?
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: Yeah, you can't even figure it out sometimes.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: Because I'm down there, and I'm feeling like I was
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: at college, UT, just a few years ago. Well, a
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: few multiplied times a nice-sized number, yeah. But it seems
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: like it was the other day, you know?
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: I know it does, man. But that's what's kind of
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: nice about it, too, is the connectivity of that, that
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: there's something special about when you get around certain things.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: that it's undeniable that it's nice that it feels not
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: that long ago in a way.
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it is. And again, on the SEC, man, I
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: was talking to Sankey about this the other night. They're
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: the only conference that wants to fight absolutely draw blood
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: like brothers on a Saturday night when you're in the game.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: But after the game, we're the SEC.
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: And the only conference that you go to and if
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: you beat an SEC team beats another team from any,
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: that's outside of the SEC conference. Yeah, they may chant
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: their name, tag LSU or their, but they also chant SEC, SEC.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: They do love it. Nobody else does that, man. I
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: used to get upset with my friends that would cheer
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: on other SEC teams if our team was out of it, right? Right.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: But now I get it.
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: That's it.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: Now I get it.
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: That's it.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: It's like, this is the conference.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: That's why I'm kind of, look, I backhanded, you know,
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: when OU beats Alabama, like they did. I get a little, oh,
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: there we go. Even when A & M came back
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: from down 33 against South Carolina, I'm like, there we go.
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: Because we're the old Southwest Conference, the old Big 12.
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: I'm rooting for them. And I also, I'm a Texas
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: fan who wants our two biggest rivals, those Aggies and
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: OU traditionally. I want them to be undefeated when we
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: play them. You know what I mean? We usually play
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: OU around the, I don't know, fifth game of the season.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: Fourth, fifth.
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: I always want OU to be undefeated. And I want
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: us to be undefeated. And then I want to beat them. Yeah.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: And I want A & M. We play A &
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: M the last game of the year.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: So it's still coming up.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: It's two weeks from now.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: Let's go.
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: Or say in whatever weekend it is. I don't know
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: when this comes out. But I want them to be undefeated.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: Hell yeah.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: When we beat them is what I want. You know
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: what I mean?
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: That's what I want. Well, I always cheer for the underdog, man.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: I find I always cheer for the underdog. That's one
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: thing I loved about Vanderbilt. They've always been the underdog. Yeah.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: Pavia's great. They have so many great guys. Every guy
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: over there has been.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: I met Pavia. He came up and said howdy after
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: the game.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: Oh, he did?
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: In Austin.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Oh, that's awesome. He's a great guy, man.
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: He's great, man. And he's the underdog.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: He's just been the underdog the whole time.
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: I was like, man, congratulations on what you've done. Keep
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: doing it, man. Y'all got it rolling. Yeah, and what
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: Lee's done with that. Yeah, because look, there's a lot
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: of players on there that a lot of these teams
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: we're talking about didn't necessarily sniff them.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Because they would have been on a different team.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: Yeah, but look what they've done. Again, back to psychology.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: That's a mental edge and the power you can get
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: from believing you're an underdog or that the world saying
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: you're an underdog fuels you instead of Right. Makes you cower. Going, oh, yeah?
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: Watch this. But to believe that is different than to
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: say that. Like, we've seen plenty of teams that are cocky.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Right, yeah.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: And you're like.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Not to get into the ego side of it.
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: You ain't going to, you know. Oh, you just laid
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: a big hit on that running back, and there's three
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: minutes left in the fourth, and you're 17 down. I
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: wouldn't be doing a dance here, Ponce.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: Did you see the scoreboard? You know what I mean?
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Or the want to, the come out. is what Maura
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: was saying, or who was it, Mike saying, well, I
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: wanted to win the game, didn't want to play like you.
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: You can see, you know, there's a certain swagger that
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: you're like, are you playing the part or do you believe?
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: Again, are you looking at the jumbotron and acting like
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: what you think you should act like or do you
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: believe that and is that dance you're doing coming from, yeah.
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: From you. That's me. That's how I feel.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: Difference. Dude, we had, there was a funny, the other
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: night I was somewhere and there was like a, I
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: think a Titans, one of the Titans kind of brass.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: And they had a, like one of their upper people was,
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: and Pavi was there. It was some dinner thing we
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: were at. And I said, oh, have you guys thought
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: about drafting Diego? You know? And the guy goes, well,
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: he's a little small for us. You know? We kind of,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: we like, like this is one of our guys. There
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: was a player there and he pointed at a guy.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: And he's like, that guy's 6'7. Yeah. And I was like,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: that guy's one in seven.
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: I was like, Diego Pavia's eight and two right now.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: I hear you. And I know it's different.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: No, I hear you.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: But for me, it's like, if I'm a team in
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: a city, I would get a player that everybody loves
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: that played in that college. I don't understand why pro
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: teams don't do that a little bit more.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: Well, they do. The Saints have been the best at
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: it historically, drafting local, keeping it in Louisiana. So that
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: Superdome's full of people going, yo, who drove my cut,
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: you know?
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: Oh, that's a good point.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: You know, um, Hey, look, I don't know how much
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: that really works in the pros because it's a new
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: singular brand business. I'm with you. I like the sentiment
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: of let's keep the home cook them going.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: I think that's how I think, you know, I like
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. Are you still teaching? Were you
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: teaching classes at UT? Yeah.
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: I visit the, I got, there's a guy, there's a
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: professor that's in there daily, but then I swing in and,
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: you know, we'll talk going for three hours at a time.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: And cause what we do is we break down films
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: and ads that I've done called from script to screen,
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: meaning let's see the journey that this book that turned
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: into the first script that turned into a shooting script
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: that turned into them. Let's see the journey it took
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: to get there because the original screenplay is very different
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: than the final package you see. And so let's show
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: these students, these serious filmmakers about how there's many ways
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: to skin the cat. And so I'll go in and
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: we just break down. We broke down most of my films.
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: And then I have the director come in and talk
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: about certain scenes. And it's a badass class.
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: Dude, I've loved it. I used to go perform up
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: at– in Huntington, West Virginia all the time. Where you
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: guys shot your Marshall movie. And that was awesome, man.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: And one time the guy that survived read– Yes, Dawson.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: He was speaking at the hotel that I was staying at.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: He was speaking there.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: When was this? How many years ago?
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: More, but more or less. 16 years ago. 16. 12, 10.
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: So we had done We Are Marshall, which is probably
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: 20 years ago?
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: Might be, yeah.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: Yeah, so look, I don't want to speak on Red's behalf,
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: but this story I heard, and I hope I'm getting
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: this correct. If I'm not, excuse me. But that, you know,
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: that crash in 1971, with that Thundering Herd team, everyone
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: in Huntington was somehow related to that.
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: All right. Whether by blood or by family or by
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: that was the identity of the town, the college at
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: that time. And a lot of people retreated. We showed
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: up to go tell that story. And they were skeptical
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: of Hollywood coming to tell their story for good reason.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: For sure.
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: Like, which version you, you know, you tell them about.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: Right, you're going to add some elements that are just
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: going to make us look bad, that sort of thing.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: You're going to make us look like, you know. Well,
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: our director, McGinty, McG, did a really cool thing. He
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: let the whole town know on the paper, hey, anybody
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: can come by the set. Anybody who wants a script,
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: I'll give you the script. And slowly, people started to
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: come around. The script was good. They were like, okay, da-da-da-da-da.
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: And then the movie comes out, and I think there
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: was a bit of catharsis that can happen. Meaning... I
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: heard that Red Dawson had been very reclusive and that
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: the time around the film coming out and the story
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: and for other reasons, he started to come back out,
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: watch a game. Maybe it started behind the fence, then
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: it moved into a bleacher, then it moved into talk. Anyway,
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: you hear stories like that and not that the film
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: we did was responsible for that, but a part of
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: that that you go, ah, what a cool story. to
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: be a part of and see that can happen, you know?
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: Well, art, that's an interesting thing about art is that
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: something can come out of, something that's nice can come
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: out of this, right? Something that still honors it, even
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: if it didn't do the best job, something that earnestly
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: tried to show up and honor this thing or have some,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: spend time with it, right? To spend time.
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: Spend time, spend on it. Well-intended.
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: Try to tell the truth on it. Ah, They get
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: to then see a representation of some of their experiences
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: on the proverbial jumbotron, but also that can help us
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: get to know ourselves better, especially if you've been locked
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: up and covering that, you know what I mean?
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: Holding those things, yeah. It's crazy some of the things
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: that we hold, you know? I got into doing, like,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: ayahuasca experiences over the past, like, maybe five, six years.
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: And that's helped, like, bring up a lot of old
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: stuff and process it, you know? Yeah. That stuff's been
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: pretty good for me.
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: Now, a lot of that's talking about going back. We
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: were talking about ego earlier. A lot of that's about
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: getting rid of the ego in a way. What would
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: you say has been the best thing, most healthy thing
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: for you that those ayahuasca journeys have done for you?
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: I would say it's helped me process a lot of
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: old pain, things that were like kind of weights.
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: Kind of things that were just like clumped up roots
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: of my past. Yeah. Hard mud around them. Yeah. Just
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: helped that stuff break up. Okay. So it's easy for
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: me to be up here a little bit in my
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: own soil. All right. And have an experience to grow.
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: Herd. Not be locked.
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: Be more receptive, maybe.
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: Yeah. And not stuck in like a lot of, like
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: kind of burned off a lot of like old, like
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: low self-worth stuff.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: Started to kind of disappear, you know? Have you had
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: any experiences like that?
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: Not with ayahuasca. I mean, I've had, you know, my own,
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: most of my big sort of breakthrough spiritually have come
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: on singular journeys that I took by myself to places
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: where they didn't know my name.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: And putting myself in those places, whether it be in
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: Africa or the Amazon and Peru, where everything that I
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: relied on was stripped away. Or the year I spent
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: in Australia as an exchange student, where all of my
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: conveniences and my talismans of identity, whether it's my name
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: or my nation or my state or my family, they're
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: all stripped away. And I was forced to rely on
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: myself and forced to kind of look up and go,
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: I'm listening. And, you know, when that truth comes on you, man,
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: it's like a gentle as a butterfly that's strong as
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: a lightning bolt. And you've got some things that hit
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: you sometimes. You go, remember this. When you go back
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: into the world and all that, Onion starts to get
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: pre-peeled again. You start to take on all these things
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: and play these different parts and get these ideas. Remember
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: this to be what you understand now to be a
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: non-negotiable truth. It's like there's an Emerson line about the
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: truth that comes to us in quiet solitude. It makes
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: so much sense, but can we take that amongst the masses?
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: Can we walk into the cathedral, the stadium with 500
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: million people and still hold that truth to be ours
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: and true for all time.
- 1:13:50Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: You know? Yeah. I think that's something as I get older,
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: that's the thing I admire somebody that something the most,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: somebody that can have just like a quiet self-confidence, you know,
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: an integrity, you know, that's, that you can tell that, uh,
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: that's kind of unshakable for them, you know?
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: Um, well, and it, it's tough, man. Because the world changes.
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: And a lot of times we change by changing with
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: it and adapting. A lot of times we change by
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: staying exactly the same. And all of a sudden we
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: look like an original and you're like, I'm doing the
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: same thing I was doing. I just didn't. I didn't.
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: I just jived when everyone else juked. You know what
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: I mean? Or I just stayed the same while everyone
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: else was juking and jiving. Do you ever feel like that?
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: Like there was a comedy manager one time I was
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: on a plane with him and he said, your audience
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: will evolve, right? Because they'll grow up. But so you
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: have to evolve somewhat, right? But there's a fear, I think,
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: especially with comedian stuff. Well, this worked. Yeah. I got
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: to stay. I got to be that person for, you know,
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: that's what I have to be a lot, you know? Yeah.
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: I mean.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: I don't know if that's like that for actors. I
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: guess it's probably different.
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: No, sure.
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: Sure.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: Or you think like this movie style worked for me.
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: Or these choices I made. Oh, everyone likes that when
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: I do that.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: That got memed or that got, you know what I mean?
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: I'm not, doesn't mean I'm going to, you know, I'm not,
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: I'm not saying I'm going to, Hey, I did never go. Well,
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: make sure you say, all right, all right, all right.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: Every scene, every, every movie. I'm not saying that, you
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: know what I mean?
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: Especially if your character's deaf or whatever, or he's like
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: just in a coma and at the very end, he's like.
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: Or, or just a pessimist. So don't say that.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Dude, that would be the best. He's like
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: such a Jack Nichols. Who's Jack Nichols in that movie
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: where he's just that pessimist? Anger management, is that it?
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: Is that it? And then at the end, you just
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: say it.
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: Here's your bumper sticker. No, there's certain things that, you know,
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: you get to, I think we all do. Rock band
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: knows what their encore is. Bruce knows they want to
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: hear Born in the USA.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: How do you sing that song? You're a proverbial fastball.
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: Clemens does a 100-mile fastball. Does he need to know
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: curves and sinkers?
- 1:15:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: But do you forgive your fastball? No, you don't forget
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: your fastball.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Of course not.
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: I think you go, but how do you do it?
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: What I try to remind myself is if I know
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: I'm going with something that's a fastball, I go, okay,
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: how do I do it like it's the first time
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: each time? I've always wanted that with comedians. You've got
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: something you know, man. Bam, it works. How do you
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: do it like that's the first time? How does a
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: band go out and play that song they played 2,000 times?
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: How do they get off to it that night? What
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: I've heard is that, oh, you've got a new audience
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: each night, so you're feeding off of them, and it's
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: their first time, so you can give it to them
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: like it's the first time.
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: That's interesting. I never even thought about it like that. Yeah,
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: for me, it's just always tricking myself, laughing. Sometimes laughing
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: seems very present, and so things like that. some modalities
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: I'll do before, like ice baths, sauna, those types of
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: things that just get your energy so like at a
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: fun level of being alive and existing that no matter
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: what you're doing seems fun.
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: So I think a lot of it is having fun.
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: How much of that, let's talk about that. How much
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: of doing that, being successful is, do you think is
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: enjoying what you're doing when you're doing it?
- 1:17:11Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: Like how much, if you laugh at a joke, and
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: I think I'm agreeing with you here is that I've
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: done things where I'm, like, going, I feel confident enough
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: in it where if it makes me laugh and no
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: one else laughs, I'm going to then think that's funny.
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: And that will then probably in turn be funny.
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: Well, that might just be a good acting. I mean, yeah,
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: that's probably just a really good way as an actor
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: to be able to, like, have that shift. Like, okay,
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: if this didn't even land the right way, then that
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: part of it is then funny. Yeah. Yeah, I think
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: as a comedian, if I'm taking care of myself and
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: I'm in a good way, then it's going to go good,
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: I know. I just think it's like they just want
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: to see you having a good time, especially these days.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: People are just so, like with podcasting and stuff, people
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: will get to know you so much. They just want
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: to be in the room with you, right? They want
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: the material to be good and you want it to
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: be good. I don't want you to just come.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: Yeah, you're all there wanting it to be good.
- 1:18:08Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: And I wouldn't show up if I didn't think it
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: was at least good enough to bring to you to
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: trade for a fair. But a lot of it is
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: just people want to spend time around each other.
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: My greatest mentor, a lady named Penny Allen, who's since
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: moved on, would always say this, you know, and you
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: got a crew making a film. You got 120 people.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: You got directors, producers. Not everyone agrees on everything, right?
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: And you can get arguments. And she was like, just
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: remember this, Matthew. She goes, One thing everyone is there
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: for and wants is a good show. You know what
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: I mean?
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: Right, like that's a unifying.
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: We have different ways of getting it, but no one's
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: there going, I don't want this to be a good show.
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: Everyone wants it to be a good show.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: Dude, in my head, sometimes I'll get in that thing like, oh,
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: I know how to make this good. you know like
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: that's a part I get stuck sometimes I want to
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: talk a few minutes more about writing and stuff before
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: you go thank you for your time sure man Poems
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: and Prayers that's your new book that's out yeah When
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: did you start writing and who kind of got you
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: into it? I know there's stuff in here from when
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: you were 18, from when you were in high school.
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: That's probably when I started writing longer form poems. And
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: that was a year in Australia where I was one
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: of those times I was lost and wobbly and looking
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: and trying to figure. I didn't have friends to rely on,
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: didn't have family to rely on. So I started, you know, dude,
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: I was losing my mind in a good way. I
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: was writing 16-page letters to myself.
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: Dang.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: And returning them. with a 17-page letter.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: No way, bro, what?
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: Yeah, bro.
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: Socratic dialogue. I was going, hey, man, we got to
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: entertain ourselves. I ain't got no one else to go to,
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: so let's have this out. And so I, you know.
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: What is strange?
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: I mean, it's cool. It's strange. It's unique.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: Oh, it's strange. It's unique, sorry.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: It was hard.
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: No, that's a strange thing to do.
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: So what were the letters? Were you saying, like?
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: Trying to work shit out.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: I was losing my mind. I didn't know what, I
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: didn't have a, I didn't have a compass, man. Everything
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: around me was odd, and I didn't know if I
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: agreed with it or disagreed with it or if it
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: was just a cultural difference or if it was bullshit.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: Just getting to know yourself.
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: And I didn't know where to stand until I got
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: pushed to where I had to make a stand. And, boy,
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: when I had to make a stand, you know, when
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: this host family wanted me to call a mom and pop.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: And I went, no.
- 1:20:25Speaker 3: No.
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: That's that I'm, I'm, I'm not going to do that.
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: I appreciate you thinking to me that way, but I
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: still have my mom and dad. And I remember at
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: the time why I said this part, I do not know,
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: but it was like, I thought it would ease the
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: blow a little bit. I remember saying this, I was like, no,
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: I have a mom and dad and they're still alive.
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: I gave him this little context, like, Oh, just in case, like,
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: what the hell does that matter anyway? You know? And,
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: and to make that stand and go, no, and then
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: call them, but say goodnight and call them by their
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: first names. And then, Wake up the next morning, my
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: alarm clock was a screaming woman going, he won't call
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: me mom. Going, oh, shit. And then going to her
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: and going, no, I won't. But putting an arm around
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: her and going, you know. Creating some boundaries for yourself, figuring.
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: I had to create a boundary. That's it. I was, look,
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: I didn't, I was trying. And so to do that
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: is part of, I think, a big part of identity.
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: And so I started writing. I'd always, I'd written since
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: I was probably 12, but I started writing poems and
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: jotting down prayers and. Things when I was, like I said, lost,
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: wobbly and looking, but also times where things were going
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: well and I felt spiritually strong and going like, well,
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: what are some habits I got right now? What are
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: some ways I'm seeing the world where the world seems
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: to be? I'm putting this out of my soul and
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: it's music and the world's kind of throwing back the
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: next beat right at me. And we got a tune going.
- 1:21:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: You know, um, And then I stepped in shit. Well,
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: that's part of the tune.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: You know, they laughed at my joke. Hey, that's part
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: of the tune too. Oh, they were crickets. They didn't laugh.
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: That's still part of the same song, you know?
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: Right, it's all part of the same song, yeah. Instead
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: of trying to get this old, this song, like just
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: the perfect song, you know, just recognize it's a long song.
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: It's a long song.
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: And so poems and prayers, look, you know, I'm trying
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: to sell Sunday morning like a Saturday night.
- 1:22:14Speaker 3: Neen neen.
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: There's a lot of good stuff, whether it's you bringing
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: up stuff in the Bible that has a lot of
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: good stuff or living. There's a lot of good things
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: we've learned from mentors and other philosophers and great books
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: and wisdoms of the past that we're told to do.
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: And I know this. No one really likes to be
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: told what to do most of the time. And we
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: also don't really like to get advice. I don't like
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: getting advice. Every director I work with, I tell them
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: right off the bat, I'm easy to work with. Just
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: don't tell me what to do.
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Or, and I tell them,
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: find a way to make me think it was my idea.
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: There you go.
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: That's the trick. I don't even know you did it,
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: but don't tell me. And I'll just go, there you go.
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: That's right. You know what I mean? But if you
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: can put it in a rhyme. If it can have
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: a bit of a ditty to it, if you can
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: dance to it, and it's a good word, it's more
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: fun to digest it. It makes the broccoli taste like candy.
- 1:23:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: You know, and you go like, oh, okay, I can
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: have a beer on the way to the temple. Thank you.
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: I mean, I'd rather have a beer on the way
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: to the temple and be headed to the temple than abstain,
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: say I'm abstaining from having a beer, but headed the
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: wrong direction to the desert.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: Right. Yeah, I've never liked taking suggestions. It's always been
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: hard for me, I think. Well, it's tough in your
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: life when things go pretty good sometimes to want to
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: relinquish the wheel, you know?
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: Hell yeah. But at the same time, when things are
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: going well, you're responsible for that. Don't give up the
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: right to believe in that you had your hands on
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: the wheel. When things are going well, we should not
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: be so humble to believe that, oh, it's all just fate.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: I think God wants our hands on the wheel. And
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: I think God's... My hunch is God's going, I got
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: too many people relying on fate.
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point. Take control of things.
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: When things are going... Give yourself the ownership of going...
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: I did that. It wasn't all me.
- 1:24:29Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: Other things in the world happened that I'll never understand
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: for timing and fortune and everything. But give ourself credit
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: when we look at the mirror and go, you're partially
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: responsible for that, bud. All right, here we go.
- 1:24:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: To build some sort of gravity within yourself, you know.
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: And understanding.
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: Because there's plenty, because it doesn't mean, and understand that there's,
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: the hard part about when we're succeeding, I think, catching
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: green lights, got our hand on the wheel, we're, Just
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: smooth and true traffic and life's like that. The hard
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: part is believing, oh, this is how it's going to
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: always be.
- 1:25:01Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: Because it ain't.
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: You'll blow a tire, man. Some goofball's going to run
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: a red light and hit you. You're going to run
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: out of gas. Something's going to go wrong. So there'll
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: be times you don't have your hands on the wheel.
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: You don't know where you're going. So knowing that those
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: times are coming, I think, is another reason to go, well,
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: when my hands are on the wheel and shit's working out,
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: Let's look in the mirror and give myself a little
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: bit of wink here, boss.
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: There you go. Let's turn our favorite music up a
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: little bit. Yeah.
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: Drop the top.
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: Yeah. There's one point he talked about prayer, too, that
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: I thought was pretty cool.
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: Prayer is worship, putting our heart above our head. It's
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: a beautiful sentiment, man. Prayer comes from worship, which means
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: to literally worship. bow down so we can put our
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: heart above our head. So it's a physical, engineered act
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: to listen to our heart. Compassion, kindness, forgiveness, peace, above
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: our head. And we live in a world that is all,
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: we're told, head above heart, man. Make it more, quantity, win,
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: however you do it.
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: Head up, look at the Jumbotron.
- 1:26:08Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: And the humility... Putting your heart above your head literally
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: just physiologically is such a cool image for what that's for.
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: And I don't think a lot of people, I didn't know,
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: that that is what prayer is actually engineered for. That's
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: why you bow. You bend a knee and you bow
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: to put your head below your heart and your heart
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: above your head so you can hear the sacred within you.
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: And the sacred's coming from the heart and soul. I'm
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: all for knowledge that we gain in our head. And
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: we need knowledge to understand reason Yeah, but there's a
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: lot of stuff that we don't, the math doesn't add up,
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: and that's languages of the soul, and it's not supposed
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: to add up, and I think that's part of the
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: pursuit of God. That's what I've always, I think God
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: loves the scientists because scientists are the practical pursuit of God. Well,
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: there's some spiritual stuff that we're not supposed to be
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: able to make sense of. I agree. It's what faith
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: comes from.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: Everything doesn't have a balance sheet. Everything you can't figure out, everything, like,
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: especially emotions, you can't, you can't, like, there's not a
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: lot of math on them. Nope. Yeah.
- 1:27:13Speaker 3: No.
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: Like instincts, all of that kind of stuff. I think
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: like that's something I want to lean even more into
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: in my life is just like believing like there's not,
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: I just have to know. I have to know that
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: what this feeling I have inside of me is real.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: I don't need to read an article to tell me.
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: I don't need to read this or know this. Even
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: if somebody shows me some fool's gold that they believe in,
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: I have to know that this God created compass inside
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: of me has some semblance of direction and factuality you.
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: Know and it takes a lot of trust and faith
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: to do that and it ain't easy and I you
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: know one that I always give myself a little amnesty
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: on is from this Benedictine monk named Thomas Mariton and
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: he said God I believe that trying to please you
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: pleases you so sometimes when we don't know I think
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: it's okay to give ourself a little pat on the
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: back and go At least I'm trying. And I kind
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: of trust that that pleases God that I'm giving an effort.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: Yeah, some grace, huh?
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: Yeah, grace.
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: Yes, sir. Give ourselves some grace. Well, thank you, Matthew.
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: I'll just pray. Yeah, thanks for taking time to even
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: contribute this to the world, help people think. There's a
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: lot of neat things to think about in here, like leadership, courage,
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: little avenues. Yeah. I think it's something that I wrote
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: down here. Carve and burn was one that I wrote down.
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: Carve and burn.
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: Burn.
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: The wheat from the chafe, the fat.
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: From the meat.
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: Yeah, man. We got to.
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: In the name of transformation.
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: That's that weed pulling we were talking about at the
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: top of the show. We got to tend our own garden, man,
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: around our soul, make sure we're pulling the weeds. Because
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: you can look down and you can go, where's that diamond?
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Where did it go?
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: Oh, it's covered in all the weeds I let grow.
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: I know. In the name of transformation, die a little
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: instead of completely. I really like that. Yeah. That's really
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: about like having that extra beat of courage, that extra,
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: you know, just believing that there's, you know, that there's
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: something here if you just stay in this space, you know.
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: Transformation comes with sacrifice, and that's part of dying a
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: little bit. If you're nothing but transactional all the way
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: through life, not transform, if you're only transactional relationships, If
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: you're only seeking work or things that can only pay
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: your bank account.
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: Or things that you know that are definitely, that are quantifiable, right?
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: That you know the outcome, right? There's not a lot
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: of faith in that definitiveness.
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: No, and that transaction, if it's purely for transaction, if
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: our life is purely transactional, then you die. In the end,
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: you die all the way. You die a lot.
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: You're dead.
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: All right? Transformational, you will die a little. It's because
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: you're making a sacrifice to live forever.
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it's cool, man. There's a lot of neat stuff
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: to think about in here. A lot of prayer, too.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: Do you have kind of a prayer practice, or what's
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: that been like in your life? Or what did you
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: even learn when you were a kid? Do you remember
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: the first time that you ever prayed?
- 1:30:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: We can finish on that conversation.
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: First prayers. My mom was a big baseline gratitude, and
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: we grew up Methodist, which is— You know, it wasn't
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: a lot of fire and brimstone. It was more be
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: thankful for what you have and try and multiply that
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: with yourself and others. And I remember if we come
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: to the breakfast table, like kind of grumpy or something,
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: mom would be in there cooking breakfast and she'd grab
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: us by the arm, walk us back down to our
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: bedroom and go, you getting in bed? You getting in bed?
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: She goes, no, no, back under the covers. She already dressed,
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: get back under the covers. She goes, don't you come
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: to my breakfast table where I'm cooking you breakfast. until
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: you're ready to see the rose in the vase instead
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: of the dust on the damn table. And you're like, oh, jeez,
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: I'm coming back. So you came back, hey, good morning, Mom.
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: There we go, good morning. She acted like it never happened. Or,
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: you know, we arguing about, man, I got this one
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: pair of cape of shoes, and they got holes in them,
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: and I need another pair of shoes, you know. You
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: better quit bitching about having no shoes. I'm going to
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: introduce you to a kid with no feet.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: Whoa, jeez.
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: So she was big on baseline gratitude.
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: And going... Before you get into being upset or pouty
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: about anything today, look outside this curtain. Do you see
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: the sun rose again? That was not a guarantee.
- 1:31:30Speaker 3: Amen.
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: Yeah, before you get how you feel about it, let's
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: look at the facts.
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: Let's look at what gift was given. Now we may
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: have a hard day, we may have something we gotta
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: work with, but that's baseline gratitudes that you cannot, do
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: not take for granted.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: And now I have a tool to work with it with.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: You show up with some gratitude, it makes everything, it
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: certainly makes things smoother. Do you think, last question, do
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: you think that, and this is back to football, because
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: do you think that the Oklahoma, Texas, do you think
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: those teams like being in the SEC now?
- 1:32:03Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: You do? Yeah.
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: Well, I know Texas does. Look, I think Oklahoma does too,
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: and I think A & M did when they got.
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: I don't think, you know, there were rumblings that A
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: & M didn't want us coming over there, but I
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: think in their heart of hearts they got. They got
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: enough chutzpah if they wanted us to come there. They wanted,
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: let's get that rivalry going again. I know Texas wants
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: to be there. We want the greatest competition. We want
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: to be in the greatest conference and we want the
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: greatest competition and we want to push ourselves to compete
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: at that highest level.
- 1:32:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: It is exciting. Yeah, I just, I wondered that a
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: little bit because, you know, you just get so used
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: to things being a certain way, you know, and you're like,
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: and then something else comes in and I was like,
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: do they really love it, you know? So, yeah, I
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: was just curious. thanks for helping me think man good
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: to see you today bro good to see you too
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: yep congratulations thanks for sharing so many creative things with
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: us over the years and helping us have thoughts and
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: feelings like I've had a lot of emotion to your
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: movies and been inspired and felt things and and unfelt
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: things you know right by watching your art over the
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: years and so thank you so much thank you for
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: Greenlight thank you for this new book it's out now
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: Poems and Prayers yeah just a lot of good stuff
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: to fodder to think about and feel about. So thank
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: you so much, man.
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: You're welcome.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: Good to be here. Yes, sir.
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: Now I'm just floating on the breeze And I feel
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: I'm falling like these leaves I must be cornerstone Oh,
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: but when I reach that ground I'll share this peace
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: of mind I found I can feel it in my
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: bones
