- Margaux: Gold dust on the counter. Gold dust on the dog. Gold dust in the tile grout a week later. Everywhere except the cupcake it was aimed at. Dana: Have you been in my kitchen? Because that's my kitchen the morning after a birthday. Margaux: Welcome to The Monégasque Table. This is an Ask the Table episode, and the listener question came in word for word like this: how do you apply edible glitter without making a mess? Dana: A question I could've sent in myself. Twice. Margaux: Here's the answer up front. The mess isn't a skill problem — it's a dose problem. The serving guidance on the listing is 0.1 grams per drink. A pinch. But your drawer is full of tools built for tablespoons. Close that gap with three moves: a tiny spoon instead of your fingers, parchment under everything to catch the strays, and a sifter cap so you tap sparkle out instead of pouring it. That's the whole system. 4 minutes, let's walk it. Dana: First let me defend the messy people, because I don't think we're clumsy. I think the jar is the problem. A little open jar is basically a shovel. You tip it over a cake, gravity takes the wheel, and now the unicorn has one solid-gold ear. Margaux: (laughs) I've seen that unicorn. Dana: Everyone's seen that unicorn. So don't tell me it's my technique when the packaging hands me a shovel and says be careful. Margaux: That's fair — and the whole category backs you up. There's an analysis of about 2,400 reviews in this category, and buyers keep asking for the same two fixes by name: shaker-style lids and a little spoon included with the jar. The mess is built into the packaging. That's the round you win, Dana, and we're barely a minute in. Dana: Noted and framed. So fix it for me. Tool by tool. Margaux: Tool 1 — the spoon. People who buy the gold 15 gram jar also grab precision measuring spoon sets, the ones that run down to 1/64 of a teaspoon. Spoons the size of doll cutlery. Level the smallest one and you're holding about one serving. No fingertips in the jar, no static cling, no surprise glitter manicure. Dana: Fine, tiny spoon. But what about the flakes that miss? Something always misses. Margaux: Tool 2 — parchment. Work over a sheet of parchment or a paper plate. Dust the cupcake from a few inches up, let the strays land on the paper, then fold a crease and funnel every miss back into the jar. Nothing wasted, nothing on the counter. A 10 gram jar holds about 100 servings — it lasts a whole year of birthdays once the counter stops eating half of it. Dana: And tool 3 is the shaker lid I just complained the category doesn't include. Margaux: Tool 3 is the sifter cap — a lid with fine holes, like a salt shaker for sparkle. You tap, it snows down evenly, and the shovel problem disappears. Two taps over buttercream, then stop and look. Sparkle lands where you aim it, not across a 3-foot radius. Dana: What about drinks? Same rules? Margaux: Even easier. One pinch on the surface, right before the glass goes out — not 20 minutes early in the kitchen. The sparkle should arrive with the drink. Dana: Alright, honesty corner. Who gets to skip all of this? Margaux: If you decorate once or twice a year, skip the gear entirely — a pinch over a paper plate gets you most of the way, and paper is free. And if you're a one-color household — gold cake, gold cookies, gold everything — skip the multi-color sets too. A single jar covers you. Dana: But if you're the house that does the Halloween cake, the Christmas cookies, and 2 birthdays a year? Margaux: Then the footnote: the MONÉGASQUE 12-color gift set ships every color with its own built-in sifter cap, so the mess-free lid is already on each jar. It's on Amazon, 84 grams across 12 jars — and per gram, it's the cheapest sparkle in the line. Dana: Next week I'm bringing the question that actually nags me. Half the shimmer at the craft store says non-toxic on the label, and I've been treating that word like a permission slip. So — what's the difference between non-toxic and edible glitter? Margaux: A bigger difference than the label wants you to think. Bring that permission slip; we're grading it. This show is made with AI-crafted hosts and human-checked facts. See you at the table.
