Transcript
- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_05: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_05: Tristan, this is episode number four of the offseason.
- 0:54SPEAKER_06: And it's also episode number 49.
- 0:58SPEAKER_06: So this is all working out.
- 0:59SPEAKER_06: And we're on the last one of the 40s because we got to do something big for number 50, man.
- 1:03SPEAKER_05: We still haven't figured it out yet, but we will come up with something that will blow your hat off.
- 1:09SPEAKER_05: Probably not.
- 1:10SPEAKER_05: Probably not.
- 1:11SPEAKER_05: No, but we're going to try something to do something a little special for the 50th episode of Talking Tech Pod.
- 1:17SPEAKER_05: Uh, I was going back actually and listening to some of our first episodes this past, like I wanted to see kind of what we did before last football season, and man, were we rookies.
- 1:30SPEAKER_06: I wouldn't say we've exactly progressed past rookie, but no, yeah, we're definitely way more comfortable behind the mice because I think everybody that listens to us knows what they're getting.
- 1:40SPEAKER_06: That it's not two intelligent guys, it's just two people talking tech, and that was the point from the beginning.
- 1:46SPEAKER_05: We never advertised that we were intelligent or would give you any correct information in any way.
- 1:51SPEAKER_05: So that's on you listeners.
- 1:54SPEAKER_05: But but we do have a fun episode for you guys in episode 49, offseason episode number four.
- 2:00SPEAKER_05: We're talking some offensive line.
- 2:03SPEAKER_05: We're talking the big boys of the football scene.
- 2:07SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's gonna be fun.
- 2:08SPEAKER_05: We're gonna compare some Big 12 offensive lines going into the year with Tech's offensive line, and we're gonna go into our top five Texas Tech offensive linemen of all time.
- 2:19SPEAKER_06: I've always said if I played football, I would be in an offensive lineman.
- 2:23SPEAKER_05: If you played if you played football, you would be the bad the the backup punter on an 0-12 team.
- 2:32SPEAKER_05: Heck yeah, backup.
- 2:35SPEAKER_05: Not even third string.
- 2:36SPEAKER_05: Let's go.
- 2:37SPEAKER_05: I made it, fam.
- 2:40SPEAKER_05: No, I think uh like the O-line, those dudes do not get enough credit because it they take a beating every game.
- 2:48SPEAKER_05: They are dealing with massive, they are also massive human beings, but they are dealing with massive human beings on that defensive line all the time, every single snap.
- 2:59SPEAKER_06: It's the least sexiest position on the field, like it's the least coolest, it's the it's the position that gets like the least amount of talk time.
- 3:08SPEAKER_06: No one's ever talking about how uh awesome this one guy on offensive line is.
- 3:13SPEAKER_06: And usually when you're talking about them, they're talking about the whole unit, not really just individual stars.
- 3:17SPEAKER_06: So it's it's kind of tough to discuss for the most part.
- 3:20SPEAKER_05: It's one of those thankless positions.
- 3:22SPEAKER_05: It's like it's like do your job, and if you don't, we're gonna blame you.
- 3:27SPEAKER_05: Like it's it's like it's like kickers and punters and that type of stuff.
- 3:31SPEAKER_05: If if you just don't do a good job, we notice when you don't do a good job, we don't always notice when you do do a good job.
- 3:37SPEAKER_06: So the thing is, it's it's insanely important.
- 3:41SPEAKER_06: Having a good O-line is so important because I mean we we saw what happened when we had the best quarterback in the NFL on our team running for his life at all times.
- 3:53SPEAKER_06: Um, so it's it's quite an importance on a football team.
- 3:59SPEAKER_05: Yes, it is.
- 4:00SPEAKER_05: Uh, I'm really excited to talk about some O-line stuff here in a bit.
- 4:03SPEAKER_05: We're gonna get to that a little later in the episode.
- 4:05SPEAKER_05: We had a couple things to start off with, though.
- 4:08SPEAKER_05: Uh, one, the MLB draft started, I think, yesterday with the first round, and then it has gone through.
- 4:14SPEAKER_05: I think the MLB draft has like a stupid amount of rounds.
- 4:17SPEAKER_05: I think it's got like 30 rounds or something like that every single year.
- 4:21SPEAKER_05: But we have made it through 10 rounds as we're recording on this Monday right now.
- 4:28SPEAKER_05: And dude, there are a ton of Red Raiders that are gonna be on MLB rosters next season.
- 4:34SPEAKER_05: Not just a ton.
- 4:36SPEAKER_05: We're talking about nation leader, my sir.
- 4:39SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 4:40SPEAKER_05: Tied with Florida right now for the most players drafted after the first 10 rounds of the MLB draft.
- 4:46SPEAKER_05: Insane stuff.
- 4:48SPEAKER_06: The Texas Tech Red Raiders have the most players drafted out of college in the MLB draft.
- 4:57SPEAKER_06: Can you imagine saying that for any other sport?
- 4:59SPEAKER_06: Like with baseball, it's the only one where you're like, okay, but even still, you're like, what?
- 5:06SPEAKER_06: I wonder if this is a first for Tadlock.
- 5:08SPEAKER_06: I know we're only 10 rounds in, but this is nuts.
- 5:11SPEAKER_06: And well, it's great for the players, obviously, but please don't tell me we're losing that much from the team team.
- 5:18SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 5:19SPEAKER_05: I mean, I think it's gonna be a real discussion on, especially with the new NIL stuff, on who's actually getting drafted but gonna say no, I'm going back to school.
- 5:28SPEAKER_05: I think that's gonna happen probably a little more now with them being able to profit off their nameage or their name, image, and likeness.
- 5:36SPEAKER_05: But I I don't think it's gonna be that much of a difference from previous years.
- 5:39SPEAKER_05: I think we are gonna lose a lot from last year's team just because we had a lot of excellent players.
- 5:44SPEAKER_05: Um, and we should probably run down that list, man.
- 5:47SPEAKER_05: I mean, we had we had a lot of good guys that are going to be not, they're gonna leave Lubbock because they are getting that opportunity.
- 5:54SPEAKER_05: They were drafted very high in a high round of the MLB draft, and they deserve to make their money and and you know just grind until they make it to the MLB.
- 6:03SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 6:04SPEAKER_06: Welcome to uh Talking Tech's coverage of the MLB draft.
- 6:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's it.
- 6:08SPEAKER_05: That's it.
- 6:09SPEAKER_05: Everybody comes for it.
- 6:10SPEAKER_05: Nobody didn't, you know.
- 6:11SPEAKER_05: The first thing people are saying is when the Rangers are up, is what does Talking Tech think?
- 6:16SPEAKER_06: You know, what does Talking Tech have to say about the MLB draft?
- 6:22SPEAKER_06: Until then, I'm not gonna listen to anybody, not ESPN, not CBS.
- 6:27SPEAKER_05: Nobody, not even talk about it.
- 6:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, it's just it's us, and we understand, and we appreciate y'all coming to us for that coverage.
- 6:37SPEAKER_05: But let's go ahead and break it down.
- 6:39SPEAKER_05: The guys that have been drafted through 10 rounds of the MLB draft.
- 6:43SPEAKER_05: Uh, first off, first guy taken off the board has not even put on a double T yet.
- 6:49SPEAKER_05: He is tech commit uh Cam Collie taken in round three, pick number 73 to the Texas Rangers, the hometown team.
- 7:00SPEAKER_05: Um, but uh this guy, unfortunately, he's taken so high right here.
- 7:05SPEAKER_05: He's a tech commit, so he's he hasn't been on the team yet.
- 7:08SPEAKER_05: He's a young guy, he's coming out straight out of high school, he got drafted.
- 7:13SPEAKER_05: But you got to think round three, dude's gonna go straight to the Rangers organization.
- 7:18SPEAKER_05: You you have to think that he's not gonna even step foot at Dan Law Field.
- 7:24SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I'm sure lots of uh uh people are pretty excited about hearing the Texas Rangers.
- 7:28SPEAKER_06: I'm sure that's like 50% of our audience, but at the same time, it's like, no, wait, wait.
- 7:33SPEAKER_06: But uh baseball's one of the few sports left that lets players go straight from high school into the MLB and just talk about an accomplishment for this young man.
- 7:42SPEAKER_06: And geez, I'm glad that Tim Tadlock recruited the guy, at least getting that kind of clout immediately.
- 7:47SPEAKER_06: Good lord.
- 7:48SPEAKER_06: Imagine being 17, 18 and hearing your name round three in the major league baseball draft.
- 7:54SPEAKER_06: That's unreal.
- 7:55SPEAKER_06: Against high school kids, you're being picked ahead of college guys, that's unbelievable.
- 8:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, man, absolutely.
- 8:03SPEAKER_05: Like this makes me think of like the old NBA draft before they stopped the high school rule.
- 8:09SPEAKER_05: Um, when you're seeing like LeBron James, and yeah, LeBron James was a man at 16 years old, but like seeing them go up and shake like David Stern's hand on at the NBA draft, and they're 17 or 18 years old and they have this baby face, they haven't been anywhere but their hometown before, like it's gotta be an insane feeling for this kid.
- 8:32SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 8:33SPEAKER_06: Congrats, man.
- 8:34SPEAKER_06: Obviously, do what you need to do.
- 8:35SPEAKER_06: If you if they're dropping a bag on you at that age and you think you're gonna make it to the big leagues, go for it, obviously.
- 8:41SPEAKER_06: But we'd love to see you in Dan Law.
- 8:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: So let's move on to some of the guys that have represented the double T.
- 8:47SPEAKER_05: Uh, Cal Conley taking round four, pick number 126 to the Atlanta Braves, and then Drew Baker taking round four, just four picks later, at 130 to the Tampa Bay Rays.
- 9:01SPEAKER_05: Conley went to the Braves, Drew Baker went to the Rays.
- 9:04SPEAKER_06: So Cal Conley went to the Braves, yeah.
- 9:09SPEAKER_06: Did I say that right?
- 9:10SPEAKER_06: You said Rays twice.
- 9:12SPEAKER_06: Braves and Rays sounds really similar.
- 9:14SPEAKER_06: So yeah, Calm.
- 9:18SPEAKER_05: Cal Conley will be in Atlanta, Drew Baker will be in Tampa Bay.
- 9:22SPEAKER_05: That's what you need to know right here.
- 9:25SPEAKER_05: But this is what you come for with talking tech pod, us just jacking everything up.
- 9:29SPEAKER_05: That's enough geography.
- 9:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, Atlanta and Tampa Bay, they're right next to each other.
- 9:34SPEAKER_06: Atlanta, Tampa, Braves, Rays.
- 9:36SPEAKER_06: Come on, how you not get that mixed up anyway.
- 9:39SPEAKER_06: So these are two players that you can absolutely uh remember here because they were just making a huge impact on the season.
- 9:46SPEAKER_06: Man, it's gonna be disappointing seeing Cal go and True go because those guys were 100% workhorses on our last lineup.
- 9:53SPEAKER_06: So I hope we got something in the get in the barrel to reload, but congrats to them, man.
- 9:58SPEAKER_06: They deserve it after the accomplishments they pulled off.
- 10:00SPEAKER_06: They were on like every single Big 12 player of the week sort of deal.
- 10:05SPEAKER_06: And man, they didn't make their impact heard all season long.
- 10:08SPEAKER_06: So those are some real ball players.
- 10:09SPEAKER_06: I'm sure they're gonna make a big impact in the new organizations.
- 10:12SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 10:13SPEAKER_05: Like we say, with everybody that leaves Texas Tech and goes to the pros, we wish them the best of luck.
- 10:19SPEAKER_05: Those dudes, especially, are gonna really have a chance to make an impact on an MLB roster one day.
- 10:24SPEAKER_05: Uh, the the thing about MLB, obviously, is you got to work your way up even after you get drafted, even if you're a high draft pick.
- 10:30SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, all these dudes are gonna have to grind it out still, but uh, they have a chance to really make an impact on these organizations.
- 10:37SPEAKER_05: So let's move on.
- 10:38SPEAKER_05: Braxton Fulford, talk about another guy who's worked his way up.
- 10:41SPEAKER_05: Uh, round six, one pick 170 to the Colorado Rockies, and then we have Mason Montgomery also going round six, pick number 191 to the Tampa Bay Rays, joining Drew Baker.
- 10:55SPEAKER_05: So that's kind of cool.
- 10:56SPEAKER_05: Two guys coming from Texas Tech to join the same organization.
- 10:59SPEAKER_05: Um, and then we had another tech commit that was that unfortunately we'll probably not see uh see him in the double T.
- 11:08SPEAKER_05: AJ Smith Shawyer, I think, or Shaver is how you say his name.
- 11:13SPEAKER_05: He went round seven, pick number 217 to the Atlanta Braves, joining Cal Conley.
- 11:19SPEAKER_05: Oh, this is just a whole tongue twister over here.
- 11:23SPEAKER_05: Um, and then we saw relief pitcher Ryan Sublett go round seven, pick number 222 to the LA Dodgers, Hunter Dobbins, who was out all of last season with injury.
- 11:35SPEAKER_05: He is a pitcher went uh round eight, pick number 226 to the Boston Red Sox.
- 11:41SPEAKER_05: Our boy Patrick Monteverdi, round eight, pick number 239 to the Marlins, and that's it, man.
- 11:48SPEAKER_05: I mean, just an insane number of picks and insane talent that was on this last year's roster.
- 11:54SPEAKER_06: Just to remind y'all, this is for professional league sports.
- 11:58SPEAKER_06: Texas Tech is leading the pack, and that was just a mouthful of teams, a mouthful of players, and every single one of them is a stud.
- 12:06SPEAKER_06: So I cannot wait to see these guys tear through the double A and AAA leagues and make it to the show because man, I I know I love watching them on the R Diamond, so they're gonna make a huge impact.
- 12:18SPEAKER_06: Uh, sad to see them go because he said a lot of names that were on our starting lineups.
- 12:22SPEAKER_06: So I know it'll be a whole new team next season, it feels like.
- 12:26SPEAKER_06: So, but uh that's that's that's a great thing, though.
- 12:28SPEAKER_06: If you're putting players in the MLB, that means you've got some real all-stars in your college, and that's what makes programs grow into the powers they are, like Texas Tech.
- 12:37SPEAKER_06: And to see Tim Tadlock turn down uh all these other schools trying to hire him to make it to build it at Texas Tech, recruiting these kids that aren't even gonna step on campus because they're that good.
- 12:49SPEAKER_06: That just spells greatness in our future.
- 12:51SPEAKER_06: And I'm so excited to see where this club goes.
- 12:53SPEAKER_06: Congrats to these guys, they earned it now.
- 12:55SPEAKER_06: Go get go make that money after you did it for the love of the game at Texas Tech.
- 12:59SPEAKER_06: And obviously, your legacy will be felt at the school post uh graduation here.
- 13:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:05SPEAKER_05: And I mean, disclaimer, these guys not some of these guys may decide to just say no and return to tech.
- 13:11SPEAKER_05: I don't know if that's very likely, but it is still a possibility.
- 13:15SPEAKER_05: Uh, but no matter what these guys decide to do, good luck to you.
- 13:19SPEAKER_05: Uh, this is a huge accomplishment for all of them.
- 13:22SPEAKER_05: Chasing their dream, it's always good stuff.
- 13:25SPEAKER_06: For sure.
- 13:26SPEAKER_06: And I know Steve and I speak for all y'all when we say anytime we turn on TV, when we watch professional sports, we're looking for the Red Raiders.
- 13:32SPEAKER_06: And no matter what, we're cheering for them, no matter what team they're on.
- 13:35SPEAKER_06: So I cannot wait to be picking these guys out in the future.
- 13:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:40SPEAKER_05: So moving on before we get to our O-line segment, I need to talk about a few of these possible Texas Tech transfers to the basketball team.
- 13:49SPEAKER_05: Um, we have a couple guys that are lined up, rumored to have tech in their top lists of schools to go and transfer to.
- 13:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, we're not done yet.
- 13:59SPEAKER_05: Mark Adams is not done getting this roster complete.
- 14:02SPEAKER_05: And we have two guys that are really highly touted in the transfer portal that are looking at Texas Tech.
- 14:09SPEAKER_05: First off, I'm gonna start with Kevin O'Banner from Oral Roberts.
- 14:13SPEAKER_05: He's gonna be a senior forward transfer.
- 14:15SPEAKER_05: Uh, entered his name in the NBA draft, but took his name out prior to the July 7th withdrawal deadline.
- 14:21SPEAKER_05: He just released his top four a couple minutes ago.
- 14:24SPEAKER_05: It is now Illinois, Alabama, Arkansas, or Texas Tech that he is choosing between.
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: Um, just insane stat line from this guy last season.
- 14:34SPEAKER_05: 18.7 points per game, 9.6 rebounds per game while shooting 46% from three-point range and 87% from the free throw line.
- 14:43SPEAKER_05: Put up 30 and 11 in the Oral Roberts upset over Ohio State in the NCAA tournament last season, and then followed that up with a 28-11 game against Florida in the round of 32 upset win.
- 14:55SPEAKER_05: Uh, let me just go through it.
- 14:57SPEAKER_05: 12 20-point games last season.
- 14:59SPEAKER_05: Really, really nice three-point shot.
- 15:02SPEAKER_05: You know, 46% from the three-point line is insanely good.
- 15:06SPEAKER_05: I mean, sniper.
- 15:08SPEAKER_05: Straight up sniper.
- 15:09SPEAKER_05: He loves that pick and pop outside three-pointer, straight on.
- 15:12SPEAKER_05: Uh, he would be an awesome pickup.
- 15:15SPEAKER_05: He's also very strong down low, has some nice post moves and a soft touch when finishing at the rim, and he and would be an absolute immediate starter for Texas Tech.
- 15:24SPEAKER_06: You're talking about this three-point stat.
- 15:26SPEAKER_06: I'm thinking this guy's a little guard, but he's not very small, is he?
- 15:29SPEAKER_05: He's 6'8, dude.
- 15:30SPEAKER_05: He's a big guy.
- 15:32SPEAKER_06: Imagine having that shot at that size.
- 15:35SPEAKER_06: This man is an absolute weapon, and I'm so glad to hear that he's in our top four.
- 15:40SPEAKER_06: We're in the top four for him.
- 15:41SPEAKER_06: And to go up against a name like Illinois, man, we're not out of it, folks.
- 15:46SPEAKER_06: Mark Adams has kept us in the fight if we're going up against names like that.
- 15:50SPEAKER_06: And in Alabama and Arkansas, there are also some new bloods here in the basketball world looking to do the same thing Texas Tech is.
- 15:56SPEAKER_06: So I'm glad to see we're still in the same class that we expected to be.
- 16:00SPEAKER_06: And this guy joins us.
- 16:02SPEAKER_06: We're looking at an already uh boosted season from Terrence, and now we're gonna be looking at a spectacular season if we add him.
- 16:10SPEAKER_06: Dude, absolutely.
- 16:11SPEAKER_05: This would be a tremendous pickup.
- 16:13SPEAKER_05: This would complicate things in the starting lineup, I think, a little bit.
- 16:17SPEAKER_05: Um, but it's a good problem to have.
- 16:19SPEAKER_05: Uh would probably push Marcus Sanosilva to the bench, but what it would do is add another outside presence.
- 16:27SPEAKER_05: I mean, that would that would have probably a starting front court of Bryson Williams and Kevin O'Banner if he decides to come here.
- 16:34SPEAKER_05: Both of those guys are great from the outside, and they're also six foot eight, six foot nine.
- 16:39SPEAKER_05: So uh they add that length on defense by while also being able to step outside.
- 16:44SPEAKER_05: That gives you five guys on the court that can shoot the three at the same time.
- 16:48SPEAKER_05: It's it would be insane to have him join the team.
- 16:51SPEAKER_05: Um, but then I also had uh Jaden Shackelford, which is a uh uh junior transfer from Alabama guard, uh six foot three, entered the NBA draft as well, took his name out prior to the withdrawal date.
- 17:04SPEAKER_05: Uh, he is between Texas Tech and Oklahoma, according to Drew DeArmond of the local Alabama ESPN radio.
- 17:14SPEAKER_05: Um, apparently his top four originally was between Tech Ohio State, uh, Oklahoma, and returning to Alabama, but it seems like it's down to just, oh, you were Texas Tech for this guy.
- 17:24SPEAKER_05: I know there's been some recent news about potentially Kentucky running into the mix.
- 17:29SPEAKER_05: Um, but dude started every game except for senior night, where he gave up his start for the senior on the team, led Alabama in scoring last season.
- 17:37SPEAKER_05: Alabama was a two-seed in the NCAA tournament, by the way.
- 17:40SPEAKER_05: Uh, averaged 14 points a game, two assists a game, nearly four rebounds and 33 33 games for the Crimson tide, uh, six 20-point games last season, had uh 21 points, four assists, and five rebounds in the SEC tournament championship win over LSU.
- 17:57SPEAKER_05: All SEC second team would be an immediate starter again for Texas Tech.
- 18:02SPEAKER_05: If we get both of these guys, we're gonna straight up be a top 10 team.
- 18:07SPEAKER_06: Please, you're you're please stop.
- 18:09SPEAKER_06: I can only get so excited here, man.
- 18:11SPEAKER_06: I'm about to explode over here.
- 18:13SPEAKER_06: Um, man, this this is great.
- 18:15SPEAKER_06: This is a great situation to be in.
- 18:17SPEAKER_06: I love that this guy's looking at us between Oklahoma and us.
- 18:20SPEAKER_06: I think that's a good uh company to be in.
- 18:22SPEAKER_06: Looks like the guy wants to get over the Big 12, huh?
- 18:25SPEAKER_06: And uh let's go play in the best league.
- 18:27SPEAKER_06: And even with Kentucky in the mix, I feel like you know, oftentimes guys are gonna leave the conference.
- 18:32SPEAKER_06: So I still feel pretty good about our chances there.
- 18:34SPEAKER_06: Um, and lots of people are asking what the guard situation is for us.
- 18:38SPEAKER_06: So if they got if this guy transfers to us, I think that kind of clears up the uh question mark, doesn't it?
- 18:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:44SPEAKER_05: I mean, I I was looking at some of uh Shackelford's tape from last year, some of his big games.
- 18:50SPEAKER_05: He wasn't the main ball handler.
- 18:52SPEAKER_05: I mean, he was they kind of had Javon Quinnerly doing that for Alabama last season, but he he does have the ability to bring up the ball.
- 18:59SPEAKER_05: What I thought was also interesting, John Rostein tweeted out uh, I think a few days ago, that uh they're Texas Tech is looking to have Kevin McCullough in a main distributor role for Texas Tech.
- 19:12SPEAKER_05: I don't know if that means Kevin McCullough's gonna be a point guard.
- 19:15SPEAKER_05: I don't know if they're just gonna have to.
- 19:18SPEAKER_05: I really don't know what that means, but for him to be a main facilitator of the offense, uh, that would mean that would mean we have a lot of guys that are six foot six and plus in the starting lineup.
- 19:29SPEAKER_06: I was about to say, we went from the beginning of this offseason talking about a lack of size in this off in this lineup to is this gonna be nothing but a tall guy lineup?
- 19:38SPEAKER_05: We could potentially see a lineup where everybody is six foot six and up.
- 19:43SPEAKER_06: All right, I guess I can't make the team anymore.
- 19:45SPEAKER_05: No, no, they wouldn't let you on the team, but uh maybe preferred walk-on.
- 19:49SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 19:50SPEAKER_05: Bro, you've seen my basketball skills, I could do this.
- 19:52SPEAKER_05: You're not very good.
- 19:55SPEAKER_05: I hate to tell you this, uh, but you you have the worst jump shot I've ever seen in my life.
- 20:01SPEAKER_06: Man, I I thought I thought I'd be able to take that point guard position.
- 20:06SPEAKER_06: Man, either offensive lineup, a line on a line, either offensive lineman or point guard in basketball, right?
- 20:12SPEAKER_06: It's it's quite the mix.
- 20:15SPEAKER_05: It's quite the mix.
- 20:17SPEAKER_05: Uh okay, I'm either I'm either right guard or I'm point guard.
- 20:22SPEAKER_05: G all the way.
- 20:24SPEAKER_05: No, but uh just finish it off with these two guys.
- 20:27SPEAKER_05: Uh, I hope I obviously I hope they come to Texas Tech, but just to have these guys considering us and Mark Adams being able to get these guys attention and to have them in their top two, top four, whatever final list to potentially transfer here.
- 20:43SPEAKER_05: Mark Adams can recruit, and I don't care what you say.
- 20:47SPEAKER_06: And it kind of puts to bed any fear anybody had about it.
- 20:50SPEAKER_06: I think that was the kind of a concern people initially had just because he wasn't the head coach before, so you don't really know how the next guy's gonna recruit.
- 20:56SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and all of that has been put away.
- 20:58SPEAKER_06: The guy got the the guy got Terrence Shannon Jr.
- 21:02SPEAKER_06: back.
- 21:02SPEAKER_06: I think that was a big part of it, and I think you're lying to yourself if you say it's not.
- 21:06SPEAKER_06: So the guy can recruit his butt off, and this is really cool to see.
- 21:10SPEAKER_06: You know, he's he's getting a delayed start on all this, and look at the progress he's made.
- 21:16SPEAKER_06: He's come into the recruiting game late because Chris Beard left us, you know, when he did, and then he became head coach when he did.
- 21:22SPEAKER_06: So we're looking at it as his transfer ability really early, and it's been gonna be cool because I bet he'll be reutilizing this transfer portal consistently, even whenever he's doing his high school thing, which obviously you want more whenever you're a dominant program.
- 21:34SPEAKER_06: But I think this is always gonna be something that he's really good at.
- 21:37SPEAKER_06: So I can't wait to see what he does with the high school recruits, too.
- 21:40SPEAKER_06: So it's gonna be really fun watching this development uh unwind.
- 21:43SPEAKER_06: But right now, his transfer ability has been awesome.
- 21:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and we do have to give credit to Barrett Peary, Coach Williams, for sure, Coach Hester, Coach Sutton, all these assistant coaches that have been working their butts off, going and seeing players.
- 21:57SPEAKER_05: Uh, if you if you follow Barrett Peary on Twitter.
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: Twitter.
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: He's one of the best followers there is.
- 22:02SPEAKER_05: Man has been everywhere the last few days.
- 22:03SPEAKER_05: I mean, Birmingham, LA, all sorts of stuff.
- 22:06SPEAKER_05: Just going all around to find new guys to potentially play for Texas Tech.
- 22:10SPEAKER_05: Uh, give give all those guys the credit as well.
- 22:13SPEAKER_05: Bear is a ball of nuclear energy.
- 22:16SPEAKER_06: He just radiates it, man.
- 22:18SPEAKER_06: He is like to blow up all the time.
- 22:21SPEAKER_06: He's like, should I capitalize this word in this tweet?
- 22:24SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 22:25SPEAKER_06: And I I love his his energy he brings to social media too.
- 22:29SPEAKER_06: It was so crazy looking at those accounts that track coach interaction.
- 22:33SPEAKER_06: The guy was like top 10, and he was with nothing but head coaches.
- 22:36SPEAKER_06: He was an assistant coach with all these uh head coaches on that list.
- 22:40SPEAKER_06: So the guy freaking brings it.
- 22:42SPEAKER_06: And he like like we always say with coach uh Adams, the word is genuine.
- 22:47SPEAKER_07: Uh-huh.
- 22:47SPEAKER_06: The guy just seems to be genuinely in love with everything he does, and it seems to be genuinely in love with Lubbock and Texas Tech.
- 22:54SPEAKER_06: So I love what he's doing there and learning under Coach Adams, and I cannot wait to see this man's energy translate to the court.
- 23:02SPEAKER_05: I I'm so excited for basketball season.
- 23:05SPEAKER_05: It's still a while away, but dude, with Terrence Shannon back, with Kevin McCullough, with all these potential transfers and Bryson Williams and Davion Warren.
- 23:14SPEAKER_05: Oh my God, I'm so excited.
- 23:16SPEAKER_06: Texas Tech basketball is going nowhere, ladies and gentlemen.
- 23:19SPEAKER_06: We're only going up and up and up.
- 23:21SPEAKER_06: We got our guy now.
- 23:23SPEAKER_06: We got our dudes plural now.
- 23:25SPEAKER_06: So even the even the players, man, it just feels like the Final Four team again.
- 23:30SPEAKER_06: It just feels like that kind of culture.
- 23:32SPEAKER_06: It feels like that that chemistry amongst the entire program that everyone just is there for each other in the family sense and just ready to win for each other.
- 23:40SPEAKER_05: And we're adding now that chip on their shoulder from having from having the guy that left to now having Mark Adams here and to having a lot to prove.
- 23:49SPEAKER_05: Our team is always Texas Tech as a university has always succeeded when we have that chip on our shoulder, when we're doubted, when we're undermined, everything like that.
- 23:57SPEAKER_05: That's when we come out on top.
- 23:59SPEAKER_05: So I'm really excited for next year's team.
- 24:01SPEAKER_05: I'm excited to be an underdog again.
- 24:03SPEAKER_06: Yeah, though that was a great way to put it, man.
- 24:04SPEAKER_06: That's Texas Tech University across the entire board is the underdog.
- 24:09SPEAKER_06: You know, we're we're we're we're number three in the state, you know, however, everyone thinks about the Texas.
- 24:15SPEAKER_06: But I love that.
- 24:16SPEAKER_06: I love being number three, man, because that just we just we just have this ferocity inside of us that makes us just want it way more than everybody else because we always have something to prove.
- 24:26SPEAKER_06: Be like, that's right, that's Texas Tech, baby.
- 24:29SPEAKER_05: And it makes the wind sweeter, it always does.
- 24:32SPEAKER_06: It's it's the best.
- 24:33SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, man.
- 24:34SPEAKER_06: Uh man, now I'm hyped.
- 24:36SPEAKER_06: We just went through a whole line of big baseball, big basketball, the two B's.
- 24:41SPEAKER_06: Now, let's move on to football, huh?
- 24:45SPEAKER_05: Let's do it.
- 24:45SPEAKER_05: Let's talk some offensive linemen, the big boys down low, protecting Tyler Shuck.
- 24:52SPEAKER_05: Let's do it.
- 24:53SPEAKER_05: Let's talk Texas Tech first, and we are going to go in a more in-depth preview of every position for the football team closer to the season.
- 25:02SPEAKER_05: But what I will say right now about the Texas Tech O-line in 2021 is we have some experience, but it's also a little unknown on how they're all gonna mesh and do uh protecting Tyler Shuck next season.
- 25:16SPEAKER_05: So obviously, the first guy you talk about is Dawson Deaton.
- 25:19SPEAKER_05: He is on preseason Big 12 first teams, he's on all Texas teams.
- 25:25SPEAKER_05: He's on he's getting a lot of hype preseason, and he deserves it.
- 25:28SPEAKER_05: He's one of the best centers in college football, he's one of the best offensive linemen in college football, uh, I think going into this season.
- 25:37SPEAKER_05: And then we also have a lot of experience on that end, you know?
- 25:41SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you know, lots of people are looking at our offensive linemen as a big question mark, but the experience makes me hopeful.
- 25:47SPEAKER_06: You know, we're getting we're getting more love than would be expected from that O-line.
- 25:50SPEAKER_06: Tech's Tech isn't you normally known for putting these corn boys up front, but with the experience on that line, it's giving everybody kind of a raised eyebrow to see what's gonna happen.
- 26:00SPEAKER_06: And Dawson Deaton's really looking like not only a leader on that line, but for the whole team.
- 26:06SPEAKER_06: Um, he's being sent as our offensive player to Big 12 Media Days.
- 26:10SPEAKER_06: What who sends an offensive lineman for the offensive side to the media days?
- 26:15SPEAKER_06: That's his that's his presence on the team.
- 26:17SPEAKER_06: That's what Matt Wells thinks about him.
- 26:19SPEAKER_06: So obviously, he's got to be a leader to do something like that.
- 26:22SPEAKER_06: And that makes me excited because I like that we're sending a non-sexy player to the Big 12 media days because that means there's a lot going on there.
- 26:30SPEAKER_06: That guy must be like an absolute Titanic in the locker room when it comes to energy and and presence.
- 26:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 26:38SPEAKER_05: And that's what you need on that O-line, and and the O-line is a unit.
- 26:42SPEAKER_05: I know these last few offseason episodes, we've been kind of comparing the top of the top.
- 26:47SPEAKER_05: This is a unit.
- 26:48SPEAKER_05: There's no other way to compare offensive lines unless you're talking about the entire unit as a whole.
- 26:53SPEAKER_05: So, some other guys to look out for that are going to be starters to potential starters.
- 26:58SPEAKER_05: TJ Stormont, the transfer from TCU, is going to be a day one starter.
- 27:02SPEAKER_05: Josh Berger as well.
- 27:04SPEAKER_05: Caleb Rogers played a lot last season, started a lot of games as a young guy last year.
- 27:09SPEAKER_05: Um, Ethan Card, who I had issues with last season, but has that experience under his belt, uh, has an offseason to learn and grow, uh, could potentially be a starter.
- 27:20SPEAKER_05: Uh, Weston Wright is up there, and then Casey Verholst, who is all who was out all last season with injury, is coming back, could potentially be a starter as well.
- 27:31SPEAKER_06: Man, I it doesn't sound like a bad group of guys to begin with here.
- 27:36SPEAKER_06: And obviously, we'll break this down more so when we get to our preseason.
- 27:40SPEAKER_06: Um, but dude, like I said, we're getting quite a bit of love.
- 27:43SPEAKER_06: So I think I I'm feeling good about this, and we really need a guy that can protect Tyler Shuck.
- 27:49SPEAKER_06: And I think these guys are up for it because I want to be making some plays, baby.
- 27:52SPEAKER_06: You know it.
- 27:53SPEAKER_06: You want to get into the tiers?
- 27:54SPEAKER_06: Let's do it.
- 27:56SPEAKER_06: Let's hear Steven Rodriguez's signature Big 12 tiers.
- 28:00SPEAKER_05: It's uh I'm working on the trademark, uh, not looking good so far, but we'll we'll we'll keep an eye out for it.
- 28:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we'll we're we're we're we're uh next in line after Ohio State's the trademark.
- 28:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we're still they're still waiting on that.
- 28:13SPEAKER_05: It may be a few years, but we'll we'll keep y'all updated with that.
- 28:16SPEAKER_05: Um, so this is Texas Tech's O-line versus the other Big 12 O-lines.
- 28:21SPEAKER_05: Tier one of the Big 12 offensive lines is only one team, and it's clearly Oklahoma.
- 28:28SPEAKER_05: Oklahoma is so stacked at every single offensive line position.
- 28:33SPEAKER_05: They have great depth.
- 28:35SPEAKER_05: I mean, the only concern would be replacing Creed Humphrey at center.
- 28:38SPEAKER_05: Creed Humphrey, a fantastic offensive lineman all the years he was at OU.
- 28:42SPEAKER_05: He's gonna be an NFL player this coming year, and he's probably gonna have a long career there.
- 28:47SPEAKER_05: Um, but really, when you're looking at him, it looks like the projected starting lineup, left tackle Wanya Morris, he's a fantastic player.
- 28:56SPEAKER_05: Uh, right tackle, Eric Swenson, center, who's gonna replace Creed Humphrey.
- 29:00SPEAKER_05: Looking like Andrew Rahme, uh sophomore.
- 29:03SPEAKER_05: He's also going up against a few other guys.
- 29:06SPEAKER_05: Senior Chris Murray, uh for a UCLA transfer, and then an Arizona transfer.
- 29:11SPEAKER_05: Uh senior Robert Congol.
- 29:13SPEAKER_05: So he's going up against some experienced guys, and he's getting that love right there.
- 29:17SPEAKER_05: Left guard, we're looking at Marquise Hayes, right guard Tyrese Robinson.
- 29:21SPEAKER_05: Both of those guys have started many, many games in college football for Oklahoma.
- 29:25SPEAKER_05: This is the most experienced and the best offensive line in the Big 12.
- 29:30SPEAKER_06: Can't you say that for every position with Oklahoma?
- 29:32SPEAKER_06: Look, it's sad, but yeah.
- 29:34SPEAKER_06: I'm not surprised Oklahoma is the best offensive line unit in the in the conference.
- 29:39SPEAKER_06: But this should be the segment where we're like, obviously, we have to talk about the Kansas schools, or obviously we have to say Iowa State, because we're just talking about a corn to people ratio in the states.
- 29:50SPEAKER_06: And those groups should have it down like they do in the Big Ten.
- 29:54SPEAKER_06: But again, man, like you can't argue with putting OU in pretty much any category.
- 30:00SPEAKER_06: They're they are just ridiculous, overpowered in football.
- 30:03SPEAKER_06: And obviously, it begins with the offensive line, and that's why they always put together these unbelievable quarterbacks.
- 30:09SPEAKER_06: Not only are they great talents, but they have all the time in the world to work with in so they can just they can make these super plays that they're known for.
- 30:17SPEAKER_06: So that's scary, but um, but there's no surprise.
- 30:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 30:24SPEAKER_05: And I I did a lot of research, I looked at a lot of different outlets on Big 12 offensive linemen going, uh, you know, how these units are going to do going into the 2021 season, and every single one of them says Oklahoma is gonna be the best.
- 30:38SPEAKER_05: They have so many good players on that O-line, but let's get into tier two.
- 30:43SPEAKER_05: I have three teams in tier two: Iowa State, Kansas State, and Texas.
- 30:48SPEAKER_05: Like you mentioned earlier with those Midwestern corn schools.
- 30:51SPEAKER_05: Uh, K State always does put together a good O-line.
- 30:55SPEAKER_05: They have all five starters returning.
- 30:57SPEAKER_05: Uh, guys to look out for center Noah Johnson and guard Josh Revis.
- 31:01SPEAKER_05: Um, just a tough group over there at Kansas State.
- 31:04SPEAKER_05: They always have a good O-line with some beefy boys uh to let their run heavy offense go.
- 31:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean, the that O-line makes their subpar quarterback play look good.
- 31:16SPEAKER_06: So that's they definitely got them corn fed.
- 31:18SPEAKER_06: They definitely lived up to what I was trying to say before.
- 31:21SPEAKER_06: So they should be in tier one, you know.
- 31:23SPEAKER_06: They they get they have a plethora of starch to choose from, yet they're not number one.
- 31:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 31:30SPEAKER_05: I mean, they're they're up there though.
- 31:32SPEAKER_05: Tier tier two is still really good.
- 31:34SPEAKER_05: When you're behind Oklahoma, it's livable.
- 31:36SPEAKER_05: It's yeah, it's true.
- 31:38SPEAKER_05: And you did say, speaking of corn boys, Iowa State is also in this tier two.
- 31:42SPEAKER_05: Uh, again, returning all starters from last season and also getting Trevor Downing back from injury.
- 31:48SPEAKER_05: Um, the thing about Iowa State is their O-line last season was supposed to be bad.
- 31:54SPEAKER_05: I mean, they were replacing a lot of talent, and it turns out it was actually one of their best O-lines ever.
- 32:01SPEAKER_05: So, returning all those guys, they all have that year of experience under their belt.
- 32:06SPEAKER_05: Um, just a tremendous offensive line over there uh at this with the Cyclones.
- 32:12SPEAKER_05: And I mean, they have a tremendous everything, it seems to me.
- 32:14SPEAKER_06: You're talking about their best team ever last season.
- 32:17SPEAKER_06: People don't realize that this is literally the best Iowa State football has ever been in their entire program history.
- 32:23SPEAKER_06: Matt Campbell is just uh you know, people always talk about how great of a coach Legan Riley is, and he is, he's a red raider.
- 32:28SPEAKER_06: Hell yeah, go him, but not against us.
- 32:31SPEAKER_06: But um, but Matt Campbell is probably the best coach in the conference.
- 32:35SPEAKER_06: He's probably made he's arguably one of the top coaches in all of college football for what he's done to Iowa State.
- 32:41SPEAKER_06: And just to see him make these unsexy line uh positions like the offensive line be the best in a power five conference, it's unbelievable.
- 32:52SPEAKER_06: And I'm just so jealous, and it just hats off to him for being able to do that.
- 32:55SPEAKER_06: And so that just makes him immediately scary.
- 32:58SPEAKER_06: As long as he's there, every position there is gonna be scary.
- 33:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and this is kind of a new revelation for Matt Campbell.
- 33:04SPEAKER_05: One of the downsides, if anything, from Matt Campbell's Campbell's tenure at all at Iowa State is that he hasn't really recruited the O-line all that well.
- 33:13SPEAKER_05: But turns out last season he had a really good set of recruits come in and replace a lot of uh starters that left from that 2019 team.
- 33:22SPEAKER_05: So uh Matt Campbell definitely has this team in line for a Big 12 championship and a possible playoff contender.
- 33:29SPEAKER_05: So uh I did also have to put the Longhorns in tier two for starters returning.
- 33:34SPEAKER_05: They do have to replace Sam Cosby at tackle, but they do have a new O-line coach, and it was the O-line coach at Alabama last season.
- 33:42SPEAKER_05: He followed Sark to Austin.
- 33:45SPEAKER_05: Um, and they're just they they have all the talent in the world, like they always do at UT.
- 33:51SPEAKER_05: Uh, this time they have an Alabama coaching staff helping them out a little bit.
- 33:55SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, had to put them in tier two.
- 33:58SPEAKER_06: Hey, everyone's gonna be kind of freak out when you say that immediately.
- 34:02SPEAKER_06: But the thing about an Alabama coaching staff is the turnover there is insane because every school is trying to hire them as a for a higher position.
- 34:10SPEAKER_06: And guess what, y'all?
- 34:12SPEAKER_06: It's never replicated everywhere else.
- 34:14SPEAKER_06: Alabama is still Alabama, even though everyone tries to hire every single one of their coaches.
- 34:18SPEAKER_06: So don't just expect Texas to put together an Alabama offensive line or an Alabama team.
- 34:23SPEAKER_06: So it just never works that way ever.
- 34:25SPEAKER_06: Anytime you hire Alabama assistant coach, never ends up the way people think it is.
- 34:30SPEAKER_06: Um, so that's something to kind of look forward to.
- 34:32SPEAKER_06: Uh, hopefully that trend continues at UT.
- 34:35SPEAKER_06: But I mean, at the same time, Nick Saban saw something in them that put them to a national championship.
- 34:40SPEAKER_06: So we just gotta we we just gotta know that they're probably gonna be mad decent.
- 34:44SPEAKER_06: And UT obviously gets the best they they can pick.
- 34:47SPEAKER_06: They get the cream of the crop and they long star state.
- 34:50SPEAKER_06: So uh there's no surprise that they're in the tier two.
- 34:53SPEAKER_06: Uh they should be tier one, so it should just shows how they underachieve every any chance they can, which is awesome.
- 34:59SPEAKER_06: So uh, but I'm not surprised, man.
- 35:02SPEAKER_06: And but I don't think people should be immediately worried just because it says Alabama next to the previous name.
- 35:08SPEAKER_05: No, for sure.
- 35:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I'm not saying they're gonna have the Alabama offensive line, but it is nice to have that offensive line coach.
- 35:14SPEAKER_05: And uh, you know, they uh like you said, they get their their pick at their recruits.
- 35:20SPEAKER_05: So uh let's move on to tier three.
- 35:23SPEAKER_05: In this tier, I have TCU, I have Oklahoma State, and I also have Texas Tech in tier three of offensive linemen.
- 35:31SPEAKER_05: TCU returning three starters, added Memphis transfer, Obina Ize.
- 35:36SPEAKER_05: I think I'm saying his name right, uh, who has NFL potential.
- 35:39SPEAKER_05: He's getting a lot of hype over there at TCU, Oklahoma State, three starters returning, including Josh Sills at left guard, who's thought to be one of the best linemen in all of college football next year.
- 35:49SPEAKER_05: Um, and then Texas Tech.
- 35:51SPEAKER_05: And and the thing that put all these all three of these teams kind of together is they have really good players.
- 35:58SPEAKER_05: It's just how do they put it all together as a unit?
- 36:02SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, there's there's some obvious weaknesses at certain positions on these teams' offensive lines, but uh I think if they get the right coaching, they get consistency, they get uh durability, guys that can stay healthy.
- 36:18SPEAKER_05: I think all three of these teams can have solid offensive lines going into next season.
- 36:23SPEAKER_06: Well, you just mentioned teams that are supposed to have way better seasons than us.
- 36:26SPEAKER_06: So I like being in this tier because it it shows the potential we have that's completely slept on.
- 36:34SPEAKER_06: So uh you so you mentioned TCU and Ogoma State, right?
- 36:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and those are both two perennial dark horses to be in a Big 12 title uh race.
- 36:42SPEAKER_06: So I'm very okay with that.
- 36:45SPEAKER_06: Um, an obvious complaint with us is you know, even if we have the uh quarterback talent, is can they protect our QB long enough to make plays?
- 36:56SPEAKER_06: So we've always just wanted a decent offensive line.
- 36:59SPEAKER_06: So that if they can be in this tier three, I think we're in for an explosive offensive season that we're used to.
- 37:05SPEAKER_06: I want to see Tyler Shuck really show his uh NFL potential behind these boys because it starts with them.
- 37:11SPEAKER_06: So if they can give him some time and work with our obviously NFL caliber wide receivers, we can really make some damage because TCU and Oklahoma State, they make damage pretty much every dang season, and the offensive line is why.
- 37:24SPEAKER_06: So I'm really excited to see us be there if we can be.
- 37:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 37:29SPEAKER_05: I agree with everything you just said right there.
- 37:31SPEAKER_05: So tier three, TCU, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State.
- 37:34SPEAKER_05: And let's move on to the final tier, tier four.
- 37:38SPEAKER_05: No, Kansas does not get their own tier in this one.
- 37:41SPEAKER_05: Uh, it is gonna be tier four with Baylor, West Virginia, and Kansas.
- 37:47SPEAKER_05: Baylor was their offensive line was pitiful last season.
- 37:50SPEAKER_05: They were so bad, they did not give uh Charlie Brewer any time last year to get anything going with the offense.
- 37:57SPEAKER_05: Uh, West Virginia is also supposed to lose a lot of guys.
- 38:00SPEAKER_05: Uh, they're not very, very uh uh highly touted going into next year.
- 38:05SPEAKER_05: And Kansas, I think the thing that keeps them outside of just being in their own tier by themselves is they got Lance uh Leipold or Leopold, I still don't know how to say his name, uh, from Buffalo.
- 38:18SPEAKER_05: And he had a lot of guys transfer over to Kansas when he came in from that Buffalo team, which was really slow.
- 38:25SPEAKER_05: I know they're from Buffalo, they're from the the university that uh you know probably does it's hard to compare them with Power Five schools, but I think they have a lot of solid options at that position.
- 38:40SPEAKER_06: I I'm sorry, I'm being a little saltier than I normally am with G5.
- 38:44SPEAKER_06: You know me, I'm a huge G5 champion.
- 38:46SPEAKER_06: You know, I I always support the G5, but the Mac is not one of the better ones, it's not, and Buffalo is not one of the better Mac teams.
- 38:54SPEAKER_06: Uh, even though Lance did a solid job there, he he gave them their best years of all time, and they still didn't really get that high.
- 39:04SPEAKER_06: So people are giving Lance a ton of love.
- 39:06SPEAKER_06: It makes me a little salty.
- 39:08SPEAKER_06: Um, they're picking him as like one of the best Big 12 coaches, even though he's never coached a P5 game in his life.
- 39:14SPEAKER_06: Um, so that just makes me a little salty.
- 39:17SPEAKER_06: Um, but back to the other two.
- 39:19SPEAKER_06: Um it's kind of crazy to see those guys, those two teams struggle in this category because both those teams are picked to win more games than us.
- 39:29SPEAKER_06: Now keep in mind we're picked ninth even in the Vegas betting lines, which kind of blows me away.
- 39:36SPEAKER_06: Um, I really I'm I really, really, really think that four and a half is an easy over.
- 39:42SPEAKER_06: Um I'm kind of thinking about doing my first betting ever.
- 39:45SPEAKER_06: I never gambled on sports, but I'm thinking about putting a Benjamin on that because I think that's kind of easy.
- 39:50SPEAKER_06: Um, but it's good to see that because I definitely need to see us be above teams in a position as solid as this that contributes to win so hard.
- 40:01SPEAKER_06: Because I definitely want to see some more wins on our schedule here.
- 40:04SPEAKER_06: And I do think those two are very winnable, and they have been winnable.
- 40:06SPEAKER_06: We've been winning those games, so this is good.
- 40:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, I absolutely I just uh like you said, the offensive line is so crucial for how the offense goes this season.
- 40:18SPEAKER_05: So this is such a big part, and the and the whole point of this exercise really is to just show how much talent we have on this team.
- 40:24SPEAKER_05: And yeah, we're in tier three in this category, but we've talked about uh the quarterbacks, the running backs, the wide receivers.
- 40:31SPEAKER_05: We have the talent to succeed.
- 40:34SPEAKER_05: It's really people not, and you talked about that four win or four point five win uh win loss by Vegas for Texas Tech next season.
- 40:43SPEAKER_05: Um I you know Matt Wells hasn't proved anything, and that's all why that line is what it is.
- 40:50SPEAKER_05: You know, we're picked ninth because of Matt Wells right now.
- 40:53SPEAKER_05: It's not because of the talent on this team, it's because of Matt Wells.
- 40:56SPEAKER_05: And that, you know, it's gonna take it's gonna take a good season for people to get back on his side.
- 41:02SPEAKER_05: So um even with this offensive line, I I think they have room to be really good.
- 41:08SPEAKER_05: Uh, but I could also see them struggling this season.
- 41:10SPEAKER_06: Just remember, last season we weren't blown out that much.
- 41:13SPEAKER_06: It wasn't like a regular clip season where we were blown out when we lost.
- 41:17SPEAKER_06: This was we were in pretty much every game, and some dumb mistakes ruined it.
- 41:23SPEAKER_06: And I hope that Matt Wells has learned from those mistakes, and I really do think he has.
- 41:30SPEAKER_06: I think this guy is a competitor, and I do like what he brings to Texas Tech.
- 41:34SPEAKER_06: I like the man, so I'm really rooting for him this season, and I think he's gonna make that turn.
- 41:40SPEAKER_06: Um, so what gives me hope is it's year three.
- 41:44SPEAKER_06: We're not it's not like we're in year five of Cliff Kingsbury saying he's gonna make the turn.
- 41:48SPEAKER_06: We're in year three.
- 41:48SPEAKER_06: So this is the one where you know he gets he the first two are a pass no matter what.
- 41:53SPEAKER_06: So we're in the one where we know, and I do think he makes the turn to where we get to uh at least five, what Vegas thinks we're not gonna do.
- 42:02SPEAKER_06: So, and you and I were just talking about this pre-pod, but the way this team is looking, six is looking like a disappointment if we just do that.
- 42:08SPEAKER_06: So, man, with the talent, the experience, and the culture we have built, this is looking pretty dang solid for the listeners.
- 42:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, I I mentioned it earlier with you.
- 42:19SPEAKER_05: You look at this roster, and if you put Nick Saban coaching this roster, it's an 11-wins team.
- 42:26SPEAKER_05: It really is.
- 42:27SPEAKER_05: I mean, this team is capable of a lot of good stuff.
- 42:30SPEAKER_05: It's just can Matt Wells and Sonny Cumby uh put it together, you know.
- 42:35SPEAKER_06: I I like I like that uh that that metaphor, whatever you want to call it, that uh example, because Matt Wells is a much younger coach than Nick Saban.
- 42:43SPEAKER_06: So he's got that learning curve.
- 42:45SPEAKER_06: Nick Saban wasn't a god coach from the start.
- 42:48SPEAKER_06: So it's it's good to see uh hopefully we see this younger coach learn and uh improve on what he did last season.
- 42:54SPEAKER_05: And Matt Wells is on a projection to be Nick Saban.
- 42:57SPEAKER_05: You heard it here first.
- 42:58SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 42:59SPEAKER_07: You heard it here, y'all.
- 43:02SPEAKER_06: That is no, we're not saying that.
- 43:04SPEAKER_06: Hey, hey, remember, this is this is a coach that Kirby Hokut picks.
- 43:08SPEAKER_06: I know a lot of people might roll their eyes at that, but our basketball and baseball program have been pretty gosh darn solid under Kirby Co-cutt.
- 43:16SPEAKER_06: And I I he he really believes in him, so we should too, up until it's just not the truth anymore.
- 43:22SPEAKER_06: So, as we always say, Cliff wasn't a bad hire.
- 43:25SPEAKER_06: I know we come back to that like every episode, but this this could be this could be good and some good stuff, y'all.
- 43:30SPEAKER_06: So just just hang in there, yeah, for sure.
- 43:32SPEAKER_05: So let's move on to some tech history, our top five greatest offensive linemen in Texas tech history.
- 43:41SPEAKER_05: We are on the O line episode.
- 43:43SPEAKER_05: Let's talk about the all timers at that beefy boy, corn boy position, as you like to say.
- 43:50SPEAKER_05: Corn fan, corn fan.
- 43:52SPEAKER_05: So let's go on, Tristan.
- 43:54SPEAKER_05: Who is your fifth best offensive lineman in Texas Tech history?
- 43:58SPEAKER_06: I just want to go into the saying that I wish corn.
- 44:00SPEAKER_06: Cotton was a grain.
- 44:02SPEAKER_06: Because Lubbock would dominate.
- 44:06SPEAKER_06: World leaders over here.
- 44:09SPEAKER_06: As the world's leader in cotton production, that's legit.
- 44:13SPEAKER_06: Um, if only it was corn.
- 44:15SPEAKER_06: Don't eat, don't eat cotton, people.
- 44:17SPEAKER_06: Do not eat corn.
- 44:18SPEAKER_05: Doesn't taste very good.
- 44:19SPEAKER_05: No, it's not good.
- 44:20SPEAKER_05: It would mess you up, I I believe.
- 44:23SPEAKER_05: Trust me, I'm trying.
- 44:27SPEAKER_05: All right, man.
- 44:28SPEAKER_05: What's your number five?
- 44:30SPEAKER_06: Number five is a guy that everyone will recognize, young or old, especially if you watch football on Sundays.
- 44:37SPEAKER_06: It's Adrian Waddle.
- 44:40SPEAKER_06: Yes, it is.
- 44:41SPEAKER_06: Is that yours as well?
- 44:42SPEAKER_06: It's also mine.
- 44:43SPEAKER_06: Wow, these might match up, my man.
- 44:45SPEAKER_06: All right.
- 44:45SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 44:46SPEAKER_06: They're off to a good start here.
- 44:48SPEAKER_06: So Mr.
- 44:49SPEAKER_06: Waddle was a 2011 all-American, an offensive lineman making an all-American on a Texas Tech team during an all an air raid system time.
- 44:59SPEAKER_06: That's that's it's just not often you see a guy like that get mentioned on a list so prestigious.
- 45:05SPEAKER_06: So that's an automatic boost, especially at a school that's not known for the line position.
- 45:10SPEAKER_06: We're not, we're we're a wide receiver quarterback school.
- 45:14SPEAKER_06: That's it.
- 45:15SPEAKER_06: So um, but the man, not only that, which gonna we're you're gonna find a pattern with these guys that their post-season, their post-college career plays into this a lot.
- 45:26SPEAKER_06: Um, the man was drafted, and not drafted, he was signed into the Detroit Lions, undrafted, which makes it more impressive.
- 45:34SPEAKER_06: And then by the first season, he was starting, and the guy was starting for a good while.
- 45:38SPEAKER_06: Um, so you got to give the guy a nod, especially in the modern era of Texas Tech.
- 45:42SPEAKER_06: So Adrian Waddle La Adrian, I'm sorry, y'all.
- 45:46SPEAKER_06: La Adrian Waddle it's a little tougher as you uh get through your second or third glass of whiskey, is definitely on this list.
- 45:55SPEAKER_06: What do you say?
- 45:56SPEAKER_05: Yes, I agree.
- 45:57SPEAKER_05: La Adrian Waddle is my number five as well at Texas Tech from 2009 to 2012, all Big 12 honorable mention in 2010, Big 12 second team in 2011, and Big 12 first team in 2012.
- 46:11SPEAKER_05: So he got better as his career progressed at Texas Tech.
- 46:14SPEAKER_05: Like you said, undrafted free agent to the Lions, also had a great stint with the Patriots.
- 46:19SPEAKER_05: Uh, currently, I believe he is not signed with the team, but still had a great career for an undrafted free agent.
- 46:25SPEAKER_05: He's a solid offensive lineman, uh, was great at tech and progressed every single season.
- 46:29SPEAKER_05: So he is number five.
- 46:31SPEAKER_06: Definitely not the only red raider to find greatness unsigned.
- 46:34SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 46:35SPEAKER_05: We've already talked about a few of those.
- 46:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we have.
- 46:37SPEAKER_06: So some of the greatest of all time from Texas Tech went unsigned.
- 46:40SPEAKER_06: That just comes back to what we were talking about earlier.
- 46:42SPEAKER_06: That this chip on the shoulder, overlooked, not viewed as the best.
- 46:46SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 46:47SPEAKER_06: Um, that he just it feeds into who we are as a university, and I I wouldn't want it any other way.
- 46:53SPEAKER_06: And I I truly and honestly believe that.
- 46:56SPEAKER_06: So um, all right, moving on, man.
- 46:59SPEAKER_06: Moving on.
- 47:00SPEAKER_06: What's your number four?
- 47:01SPEAKER_06: And number four is somebody that everyone will remember, that everyone will have no mistake of knowing who this is.
- 47:10SPEAKER_06: It's Brandon Carter.
- 47:12SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 47:12SPEAKER_05: You okay.
- 47:13SPEAKER_05: We may we may have the same five.
- 47:15SPEAKER_06: We have the same five, don't we?
- 47:16SPEAKER_06: We we may.
- 47:17SPEAKER_06: I promise y'all, we don't plan this together.
- 47:20SPEAKER_06: No, we don't.
- 47:20SPEAKER_06: We do separate lists, but yeah, we do.
- 47:22SPEAKER_05: It looks like we might we might have the same.
- 47:25SPEAKER_06: This guy gets it on almost almost fan recognition alone.
- 47:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah, the guy the guy dressed up as a WWE superstar every single game.
- 47:35SPEAKER_06: Like he is one of the poster childs of Texas Tech football.
- 47:38SPEAKER_06: That's just kind of how we act, the way this guy dressed, you know, this wild card.
- 47:43SPEAKER_06: He's such a wild card.
- 47:44SPEAKER_06: That's what we are.
- 47:46SPEAKER_06: 2008.
- 47:47SPEAKER_06: This man was on that team, the uh legendary season.
- 47:50SPEAKER_06: He was an all-American too, and he led us to number two in the nation.
- 47:54SPEAKER_06: The guy gets a nod for being just an energy, absolute conduit.
- 47:59SPEAKER_06: The guy just brought it every single game, shows in his awards, shows in his presence, shows in his remembrance.
- 48:07SPEAKER_06: This guy, my god, he's like a John Cena of Texas Tech.
- 48:13SPEAKER_05: And he and he was, he participated in the WWE there for a while post-Texas Tech.
- 48:18SPEAKER_05: But uh, yeah, I mean, recognizability is the name of the game with this guy.
- 48:22SPEAKER_05: It was off the charts.
- 48:23SPEAKER_05: Everybody knew who Brandon Carter was, and that's rare for the least sexy of positions in college football.
- 48:30SPEAKER_05: So uh this dude only allowed one sack uh as a junior in 2008, like you mentioned, uh there from Texas Bram, huh?
- 48:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:40SPEAKER_05: Must be nice.
- 48:41SPEAKER_05: Uh, but was on some great Texas Tech teams.
- 48:43SPEAKER_05: He was there from 06 to 09.
- 48:45SPEAKER_05: That's the golden years of Texas Tech football.
- 48:47SPEAKER_05: Um, and he's it, I mean, he was just insane.
- 48:50SPEAKER_05: He had a he had a shortst in the NFL, but uh just an energy guy.
- 48:54SPEAKER_05: He's he's one of those dudes that kind of has like the Dennis Rodman factor.
- 48:58SPEAKER_05: There's certain athletes, certain pro athletes that you just know have have that good amount of crazy in them to be successful in their craft, but also some have taken that overboard.
- 49:09SPEAKER_05: Um, I'm not sure about this guy's uh professional career after Texas Tech, but while he was at Texas Tech, he had that good balance of crazy to athlete, you know, what he brought to the table.
- 49:21SPEAKER_05: So uh Brandon Carter's an all-timer.
- 49:23SPEAKER_06: The word you're looking for is character.
- 49:26SPEAKER_06: There you go.
- 49:27SPEAKER_06: And um, so whenever you talk about this only allowed one sack, the thing about being an offensive lineman is you can't really cover that up.
- 49:33SPEAKER_06: You're it's it's not like that's being hidden, you're the front line.
- 49:37SPEAKER_06: So those stats are real.
- 49:38SPEAKER_06: You're going up against these defenses in the Big 12 during the peak of the conference, yeah, and the guy only allowed one sack.
- 49:47SPEAKER_06: It was probably a fluke.
- 49:49SPEAKER_06: At one, it's a fluke.
- 49:50SPEAKER_06: So what an amazing career and what amazing legacy to leave behind.
- 49:55SPEAKER_06: The guy just personifies Texas Tech fandom and the school.
- 49:59SPEAKER_06: It just comes keeps coming back to that that strange, overlooked wild card.
- 50:04SPEAKER_06: I that's just what we are.
- 50:06SPEAKER_06: All right, man.
- 50:06SPEAKER_06: You want to get to number three?
- 50:08SPEAKER_05: Let's do it.
- 50:08SPEAKER_05: Okay, I'll give my number three right here.
- 50:11SPEAKER_05: Uh, maybe you're number three, maybe not.
- 50:14SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 50:14SPEAKER_05: We'll see.
- 50:15SPEAKER_05: Okay, my number three, Luis Vasquez.
- 50:18SPEAKER_05: My two! We have the same five.
- 50:21SPEAKER_05: We have the same list.
- 50:22SPEAKER_05: We have the same list for the first time.
- 50:24SPEAKER_05: Luis Vasquez there from 2005 to 2008.
- 50:28SPEAKER_05: First off, before he was even at tech, he was a legend because he chose us over offers from Texas A, Texas, Texas AM, and LSU.
- 50:38SPEAKER_05: So big time stuff immediately.
- 50:40SPEAKER_05: Big time stuff immediately coming to Texas Tech over those other schools.
- 50:43SPEAKER_05: Big 12 honorable mention in 2007, Big 12 second team in 2008, a rivals second team all-American to in 2008, AP third team all-American, third round pick by the Sandy, the then San Diego Chargers, uh, benched.
- 51:00SPEAKER_05: This is the greatest thing about him.
- 51:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, benched 225 pounds at the NFL combine 39 times.
- 51:08SPEAKER_05: It was a it was a combine, the highest at that combine.
- 51:12SPEAKER_05: Um, won the starting right guard spot as a rookie for the Chargers, Pro Bowler in 2014, Super Bowl champ in 2015.
- 51:19SPEAKER_05: Uh, dude was absolutely had a great career in the NFL, had an awesome career at Texas Tech.
- 51:25SPEAKER_05: He's number three.
- 51:26SPEAKER_06: As if you didn't need to cement more my statement before that.
- 51:30SPEAKER_06: I would be an offensive lineman with those weight reps.
- 51:33SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 51:34SPEAKER_05: You know, you would have hit 40.
- 51:37SPEAKER_06: Dude, you covered literally everything I was gonna say.
- 51:40SPEAKER_06: The the guy was an absolute stud in and out of college, his NFL career was just as impressive as his college career, and so you can't leave him out of that number three spot, especially in a position that gets overlooked.
- 51:51SPEAKER_06: So the guy deserves that spot, and we're all we're all Vasquez guys here.
- 51:56SPEAKER_06: That's what I'm that's what I'm saying.
- 51:58SPEAKER_06: I've always said I'm a big Vasquez guy, huge Vasquez.
- 52:01SPEAKER_05: I've I haven't said anything else in my life.
- 52:03SPEAKER_05: I've always just said I'm a big Vasquez guy, but yeah, let's move on.
- 52:08SPEAKER_05: Number two, we had the same list.
- 52:09SPEAKER_05: Dan Irons.
- 52:11SPEAKER_05: Old boy, this is like the perfect offensive lineman name, first off.
- 52:16SPEAKER_05: Dan Irons, man.
- 52:18SPEAKER_05: He he was awesome protecting the quarterback from 1975 to 1977 at Texas Tech.
- 52:28SPEAKER_05: Uh, a true old boy, a true red raider, uh, six foot seven, 260 pounds, which is pretty insane for the time.
- 52:36SPEAKER_05: Um, Lubbock local as well, man.
- 52:39SPEAKER_05: Came from uh, I think Monterey is where he went to high school.
- 52:43SPEAKER_05: I could be wrong on that, but he did go to high school in Lubbock.
- 52:46SPEAKER_05: Uh, he's a Texas Tech guy and he's number two all time.
- 52:49SPEAKER_06: Dude, I mean, for for that time and being that big of a dude and just tearing up like he did, and dude, it wasn't just college.
- 52:56SPEAKER_06: The guy went on, he got drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 78 draft.
- 53:00SPEAKER_06: He's inducted into the Texas Tech Hall of Honor in 2015, and he's in the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame.
- 53:06SPEAKER_06: He's an offensive lineman and he gets all these honors.
- 53:10SPEAKER_06: That's that's amazing.
- 53:11SPEAKER_06: And it makes it even sweeter whenever it's a Hub City dude.
- 53:13SPEAKER_06: And we have to have all those guys.
- 53:15SPEAKER_06: If you're a Hub City legend, you better be a Texas Tech legend too.
- 53:18SPEAKER_06: And he is, yeah, for sure.
- 53:20SPEAKER_05: And should mention All-American in 1977, he was all Southwest Conference in 1976 and 77.
- 53:27SPEAKER_05: So, dude's got the accolades to back it up.
- 53:30SPEAKER_05: He was a tremendous lineman uh for the time and an all-timer at Texas Tech.
- 53:34SPEAKER_05: So he's number two, man.
- 53:36SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 53:37SPEAKER_06: It's kind of crazy that we got this.
- 53:38SPEAKER_06: We we actually do have the same list now.
- 53:40SPEAKER_05: We do.
- 53:41SPEAKER_05: I this is the first time.
- 53:42SPEAKER_05: First time actually, we do not do these lists together.
- 53:46SPEAKER_05: We don't even we don't discuss them prior.
- 53:48SPEAKER_05: We try to just you know give it out when we're recording right now.
- 53:52SPEAKER_05: So we actually do have the same exact list.
- 53:54SPEAKER_06: I think I think it's because I think it's because whenever like with an offensive line, it's there really are standouts, and we have the standouts to use them, so yeah, for sure.
- 54:03SPEAKER_06: It's not like wide receiver, like, oh, these numbers are good, but yeah, these awards.
- 54:06SPEAKER_06: It's there's not a whole lot of like yes and no.
- 54:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 54:11SPEAKER_05: So go ahead with both of our number ones of the the number one offensive lineman at Texas Tech of all time, Tristan.
- 54:20SPEAKER_05: He was there when you and me were there.
- 54:22SPEAKER_05: Who is he?
- 54:23SPEAKER_06: I was gonna open up with my statement that this is our guy.
- 54:26SPEAKER_06: We keep putting our guys on these lists.
- 54:28SPEAKER_06: Uh, it's selfish, but this one is worth it.
- 54:32SPEAKER_06: It's LaRaven Clark, y'all.
- 54:33SPEAKER_06: And y'all saw that coming, man.
- 54:35SPEAKER_06: Dude, that this guy didn't he was way too good to be recruited to Texas Tech at the time.
- 54:42SPEAKER_06: You know, this guy was a high school All-American.
- 54:45SPEAKER_06: He was a four-year starter, a four-year starter, y'all.
- 54:48SPEAKER_06: All four years, all Big 12 first team.
- 54:51SPEAKER_06: The guy was just an absolute stud on our line during a time when Texas Tech wasn't exactly the best team in the world.
- 54:59SPEAKER_06: And the guy is still playing on Sundays these days.
- 55:02SPEAKER_06: The dude is a stud, is he's definitely deserving of the number one spot.
- 55:08SPEAKER_06: What do you have to say about him, Steven?
- 55:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, man.
- 55:10SPEAKER_05: The most accolades of any offensive lineman in Texas Tech history, uh, all Big 12 first team in 2013, 14, and 15.
- 55:17SPEAKER_05: Second team all American.
- 55:19SPEAKER_05: No, it doesn't stink.
- 55:21SPEAKER_05: Second team All-American in 2014 and 15, freshman all-American, drafted in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft by the Colts.
- 55:30SPEAKER_05: Uh, was with the Colts all up until this pass off season where he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 55:35SPEAKER_05: Sorry, Cowboys fans.
- 55:36SPEAKER_05: Um, and he he's just tremendous.
- 55:38SPEAKER_05: He was great all those years.
- 55:40SPEAKER_05: Basically, one of the only ones that was on that O-line to protect Patrick Mahomes in that 2015 season.
- 55:48SPEAKER_05: Uh, he was not the reason.
- 55:49SPEAKER_05: Again, him, Mahomes, and Jakeem Grant, those three guys you cannot, DeAndre Washington, those guys you cannot blame for how many wins we had that season with such talent.
- 55:59SPEAKER_06: Gosh, how often we say, not the reason.
- 56:02SPEAKER_06: He was not the reason.
- 56:04SPEAKER_05: Hey, look at the defense and you'll see the reason.
- 56:07SPEAKER_05: That's that's what it was.
- 56:09SPEAKER_05: But uh, yeah, man, this guy's awesome.
- 56:11SPEAKER_05: And I have one question for you about La Raven Clark.
- 56:14SPEAKER_05: Uh, he's got to be the only one in the world with the name La Raven, right?
- 56:18SPEAKER_05: There cannot be there, can't be one more person in this entire planet that is named La Raven.
- 56:24SPEAKER_06: Maybe a child that's been born after a mother watching La Raven Clark, but no chance there's another La Ray La Raven Clark.
- 56:32SPEAKER_06: But that means he's our one and only La Raven Clark.
- 56:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's the one and only La Raven Clark.
- 56:39SPEAKER_05: There's no chance that anybody else on this planet is named La Raven.
- 56:44SPEAKER_05: So shouts out to him.
- 56:46SPEAKER_05: He is continuing uh what is already a solid, solid NFL career.
- 56:51SPEAKER_05: Uh, and he's the best offensive lineman in tech history.
- 56:53SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 56:54SPEAKER_06: And we're talking about a guy that reps the red and black to this day, too.
- 56:57SPEAKER_06: He he's still full of pride for the school.
- 56:59SPEAKER_06: Um, and that's that's what we always love seeing out of our fellow, our our former Red Raiders is they always seem to sport the Scarlet and Black.
- 57:07SPEAKER_06: They always seem to have a chip on their shoulder.
- 57:09SPEAKER_06: Heck, our the best player in the NFL seems to always have a chip on his shoulder, too, thinking he always has something to prove.
- 57:16SPEAKER_06: So that's just that's what makes the best players, that's what makes the best competitor.
- 57:20SPEAKER_06: So, man, this is a fun list, even though it shouldn't have been.
- 57:23SPEAKER_06: Um uh, but it's just such an untalked-about position.
- 57:28SPEAKER_06: But man, is it so important in in the sport?
- 57:32SPEAKER_06: Uh, this this was great, man.
- 57:33SPEAKER_06: And this is a lot of good raid raiders here to talk about.
- 57:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 57:36SPEAKER_05: So let's mention a few honorable mentions.
- 57:38SPEAKER_05: Don King uh was right there, right there at number five, could have taken over Larry Adrian Waddle, but had to put La Adrian there at number five.
- 57:46SPEAKER_05: Uh, Terrence Steele, I will put as well, um, really, you know, has a bright future ahead of him.
- 57:52SPEAKER_05: I know Cowboys fans, he was thrown into the fire last season and uh showed some mistakes.
- 57:57SPEAKER_05: He was also hurt a lot at Texas Tech, but he's a really talented guy, really solid uh O-lineman.
- 58:04SPEAKER_05: And then I also put our boy Jack Anderson, who is going to uh try to try to potentially make a name for himself in the NFL.
- 58:11SPEAKER_05: He's a seventh round pick.
- 58:12SPEAKER_05: Not a lot of seventh-round picks do survive, but I think if any of them can, it can be Jack.
- 58:18SPEAKER_06: Man, he he was brought into Texas Tech with high NFL hopes.
- 58:21SPEAKER_06: So I'm sure he will show out for him.
- 58:24SPEAKER_06: I'm excited to see what he does.
- 58:26SPEAKER_06: Uh, and hopefully he'll make this make his way on this list post college.
- 58:30SPEAKER_06: So that's not a lot he's worked.
- 58:32SPEAKER_06: So hopefully he can do it.
- 58:34SPEAKER_05: Let's do it, man.
- 58:35SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 58:35SPEAKER_05: So that was it.
- 58:36SPEAKER_05: Our top five Texas Tech offensive linemen of all time.
- 58:40SPEAKER_05: We are going to move on to our uh second to last segment, like we do during these offseason episodes.
- 58:46SPEAKER_05: We're just gonna do a few quick fire questions back and forth to one another, just to kind of shoot the shit, just hang out, you know, give you all a little off-season content that we can here on Talking Tech Pod.
- 58:56SPEAKER_05: Tristan, what is your first question?
- 59:00SPEAKER_06: All right, man.
- 59:02SPEAKER_06: So last season, last last time I asked you what would you rather beat OU or UT in the upcoming football season.
- 59:12SPEAKER_06: I thought these were kind of fun, so I'm gonna keep them rolling here.
- 59:15SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 59:16SPEAKER_06: Would you rather beat the TCU Horn Frogs or the Baylor Bears in the upcoming season?
- 59:24SPEAKER_05: That one I think I'd go with Baylor.
- 59:28SPEAKER_05: Um TCU will be a better team, but Baylor I hate more.
- 59:35SPEAKER_05: Uh both of them, private schools, obviously, they are the um they stink, you know.
- 59:42SPEAKER_05: You just hate the private, you just hate the private schools, and and it makes it worse because they're private schools.
- 59:47SPEAKER_05: Um, I think you know, being that public school power, Texas Tech, you know, we we include everybody and we're not so like ooh, hoody toity, private school, whatever you want to call it.
- 59:57SPEAKER_05: Um hedge funds.
- 59:59SPEAKER_05: And we don't no, we don't have hedge funds.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_05: We don't we don't have any of that.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, trust.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_05: None of that going on over here at Texas Tech.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_05: Um, but I hate Baylor more.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_05: I have we we grew up in San Antonio, it's a little closer.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_05: I knew more people that went to Baylor than TCU.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_05: Um, I think if you grew up in the DFW area, I think it might be the opposite.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_05: Uh, but for me, I I'm gonna say I'd and and with Baylor's whole scandal, the whole football thing that went down.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_05: I just like beating them every year.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_05: I I I dislike the university.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_05: I dislike both these universities, but I I I think I dislike Baylor a little more.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_06: Uh I have to agree with you.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_06: Uh the only thing that's really tearing at me is Gary Patterson, yeah, the least likable coach in the Big 12.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_06: What's cool about Baylor is Dave Aranda is the Texas Tech alum.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_06: So it takes the edge off a bit.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_06: But I'm gonna agree with you.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna go Baylor because Baylor isn't supposed to be as good.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_06: I don't want to lose to a worse team.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_06: And Baylor has more fans.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_06: There's more Baylor fans to interact with than TCU fans.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_06: TCU fans are unicorns.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_06: I I really don't know where they are, I don't know why they were added to the conference, besides being really good at football for a short period of time.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_06: Um, but anyway, back to it.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna have to agree with you.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_06: It's Baylor because they have more fans to talk mess with, and the the scandal is a huge part of it as well.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_06: It really hurts when you lose to that school because of that.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_06: And I'm gonna have to say Baylor too.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_06: I think it because I think it's also a game that we have to win, and but I do think we have we should have a real shot at TCU too.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_06: Like, unlike unlike the last discussion, UT's the one where you have a shot to win.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_06: OU is a pipe dream right now.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna love that pipe dream if it comes true.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_06: But uh yeah, but uh TCU and Baylor, these are two teams we could beat.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_06: Baylor we should beat, so I'm gonna have to go Baylor.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely agree 100% with what you said.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_05: Um so moving on, I'll go to my first question.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_05: Your hottest Big 12 football take of the 2021 season, and this is a hot take.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_05: This is not something that most people agree with.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_05: This is something that you 100% believe in, and you're kind of going against the grain here.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_05: What is your hottest take?
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_06: All right, I like the Big 12.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_06: I support the Big 12.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_06: I think this is gonna be a good season for the Big 12.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_06: I'm thinking we're sending eight teams to the Bowls.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_06: Wow, yeah, I think we're sending eight at minimum seven to the bowls.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_06: I think the middle of the pack is going to be very tight.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_06: I think tech's gonna be in this mosh pit of a mix that gets six to eight wins.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_06: I think that's all it's gonna be in the middle.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_06: I think there's gonna be a clear-cut top, and then everyone else.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_06: So I think this is gonna be a really competitive Big 12 this season.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_06: Um, I think we're sitting a truckload to the bowl season.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_06: That's my hot take.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_06: Um, yeah, I think I think that's a that's pretty hot, right?
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_05: So I think uh eight out of the 10 teams making a bowl.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_05: That is that's a hot take.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_05: Um, I will say.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_05: I don't I don't expect that to happen.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_05: Who you have here as your two teams that do not make bowls?
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_06: Not Kansas.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_06: Just kidding.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_06: Definitely Kansas.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_06: It's definitely Kansas.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_06: And if I was gonna pick one team that's not doing it, it's gonna be Baylor.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_06: I think Baylor is still more of a re bull, re rebuild sort of thing, but I don't think it's by much.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_06: I think they win five games uh at least four.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_06: So I don't think it's that out of Wilden that they're not making it.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_06: Um if not West Virginia or K-State, I think those are the other ones.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_06: So uh, but I think eight at least seven are going bowling.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_06: I think this is a really, really, really competitive Big 12.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, okay.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so I have two hot takes about the Big 12 this season.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_05: One is not as burning, so I'm gonna say that one first.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_05: Iowa State will lose four games this year.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_05: That is my hot take.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_05: Iowa State is getting a lot of hype into this year, and I understand everything from it.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_05: Something inside me is telling me that Iowa State is not gonna live up to the hype, and they are gonna lose four games this year and not be a a contender for really an NY6 or a or a playoff.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_06: Can I react to that?
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_06: Or are you gonna hit out your next no no go ahead?
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_06: Holy cow, brown cow.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_06: Four losses, huh?
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_06: Four four losses.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_05: I think that's I think that's what's gonna happen.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_06: I think they're gonna lose.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_06: Um they're gonna be in the mix of what I was just talking about, this middle pack of the Big 12.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think I everything uh everything is telling me this is the stupidest thing I've ever said.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_05: Literally everything.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_05: We are gonna put this team in so many tier one categories of their position groups uh throughout this offseason, and nothing other than my gut is telling me that Iowa State is gonna lose four games this year.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_06: Well, here's what brings your furnace level take a little cooler.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_06: This is actually the literal highest ranked, literal highest Vegas line, literal highest expectation in all of their history, all their history.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_06: And this is a very, very old program, over 100 years old.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_06: Iowa State.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_06: This is the most hype they've ever gotten ever.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_06: And I have to agree with you.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_06: I don't think they're gonna lose four four games, but I do not think they're gonna surpass the nine and a half line.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_06: I don't think that's gonna happen.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_06: Um, I think Iowa State's one of those teams, much like Texas Tech, much like O'Golma State, much like everybody else, where they have these seasons that get to be awesome every once in a while.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_06: And I think they had that last season.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_06: So I mean, it'd be awesome if they did.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_06: I like cheering for the teams that aren't ET and OU in the Big 12.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_06: Um, but as long as it's not against us.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_06: Uh, but but that's that's not a bad take, man, because I could see it happening as well.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_06: I don't think you're gonna lose four games, but I can see where your mind's at.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_05: I see, I see the four games.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_05: I don't necessarily know what they're gonna be.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_05: I I I think it starts with that Iowa game, it always does with their season.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_06: So if they lose to Iowa as a fandom, that's a huge game for them.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_05: So absolutely.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_05: If they lose to Iowa, my prediction could probably be on the right swing there.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_05: Um, Oklahoma, they're favored in every game this season except for the Oklahoma game.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_05: So this is a hot take.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_05: I I I think they lose to Iowa, I think they lose to Oklahoma, I think they lose to two more games of Texas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_05: I think they lose two of those.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_05: I I um it's a hot take.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_05: This is steamy.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_05: Those were two steamy takes.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_05: Those were those were steamy takes.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_05: I had another one.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna mention it.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_05: Oklahoma State finishes eighth.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_05: Please.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_05: I I we're going through this list of position groups.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_05: What what's the good part of the Oklahoma State offense?
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_06: I can't tell you, it's not the quarterback.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_06: It's is it Spencer?
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_05: Is it supposed to be Spencer Sanders?
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_05: Because he was very underwhelming last season.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_05: And this isn't like a slight at Oklahoma State for them being Xerox U and copying all of our stuff, but they did do that, by the way.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_05: But uh, I just don't see the production being what it was.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_05: They had Chuba Hubbard and they had Tylan Wallace last season, both of which, and they were underwhelming last year, and they had two of the top talents in all of the Big 12, and they're losing that.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_05: And I don't quite know where that replacement is gonna be.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_05: So I think Oklahoma State could sneakily be one of the worst teams in the Big 12 next season.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_06: It's about time they were, dude.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_06: Mike Gundy has been absolutely so darn gosh darn consistent his whole time there.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_06: Um, he's had them in the top echelon of the Big 12 this whole time.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_06: And every time Texas Tech has a bad season, I'm always like, we should at least be Oklahoma State.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_06: Like, that's that should at least be our expectation.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_06: Because I think I look at Oklahoma State and I look at a mirror.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_06: Um, I have a I have a bit of a like kind of brother from another mother look at them.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_06: So I I hope so, dude, because it's about time they finished lower than us.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_06: It hasn't happened since we were at the top of the Big 12.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_06: So I would love that.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_06: Um, and especially if they beat Oklahoma, I'd love that even more because I'm always pulling for them in bedlam.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_06: Who isn't?
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_06: So absolutely.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_06: So, dude, I would love it.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_06: That take came true.
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_06: Um, and I think that's the the colder of the takes, honestly.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_06: I think uh I really do.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_06: It it could be.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_05: I like I going through this whole thing, these offseason episodes, I'm not seeing the production from Oklahoma State that they've had in previous years.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_05: They've had a lot of solid players, and I I'm not a real Spencer Sanders believer.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_05: I think he can be a solid quarterback.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_05: I don't know if he's gonna be that guy, you know.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_05: So those are my those are my two hot takes.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_05: I wanted to mention them uh on the on this podcast.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_05: We are look at us, look at talking tech pod trying to meet the expectations of fellow Texas Tech Pod tortillas and takes with the hotness and the spiciness of their takes, man.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, man.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_06: We're just we're we're we're new to the game, we're the newer of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_06: We're uh we're with the great rambling raiders and tortillas and takes.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_06: So I hope our takes are just as spicy as y'all hear from there.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_05: You ready for the next question?
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_05: Also, got to mention the guns up flagship podcast.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_05: Go listen to them as well.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_05: Listen to all three of these guys, all three of these podcasts because they're all awesome.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_05: Uh, they all do a great job.
- 1:09:53SPEAKER_06: Well, the flagship, the mothership isn't there for the takes, they're there to interview our prospects and our players, which is which is something that you can't get anywhere else.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_06: So make sure y'all go listen to them too.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, please.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_05: So, all right.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_05: What is your next question?
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_06: You know what the next question is.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_06: It's gonna be buyer pass.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_06: Do it.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_06: Buyer pass.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_06: What are we doing?
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_06: I need you to bring your uh your thoughtfulness.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_06: Uh-oh.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_06: I need you to expand your brain from the small walnut it is.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_06: No promises.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_06: All right, go ahead.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_06: All right, I'm gonna do a hot one, one that everyone's gonna want to know about.
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_06: What do you think of adding the third ward?
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_06: The U of H, Houston Cougars.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_06: Yikes.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_06: This is a this is a toughie.
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_06: It's such a tough one.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_06: It's it's 50-50, right?
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_06: You're like, holy cow, I don't know what put to have it in.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_05: You know, Houston, University of Houston, is they have the fan base, they have the location to be in the Big 12.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_05: Um as a Texas Tech fan, as from my perspective, I do not want them in the Big 12.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_05: I do not want more competition from Texas.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_05: I do not want to have to uh compete with uh we get a lot of our recruits from Houston, and having to compete now with a power five University Houston would be even tougher.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_05: We already have to compete with AM, we already have to compete with Baylor and TCU in Texas.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_05: Why why would I want another power five level Texas team to in the Big 12?
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_05: I I get it from an out of out of Texas uh you know fan of the Big 12.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_05: Uh I I get the financial backing, maybe I get the fandom support.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_05: Um, but I no, I would I would pass on U of H.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_06: I have to disagree with you on the I get it as a non-Texas fan, like state of Texas fan of the Big 12, because I think most non-Texas fans in the Big 12 don't want more Texas.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's fair.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_05: That's true.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_06: Because I think everyone views this conference as a Texas-centric con uh conference, which is very fair and very true.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_06: This conference runs through the state of Texas.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_05: Four of the 10 teams exactly.
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_06: So I I I think I disagree with you a bit there.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_06: Um, and I agree with you on everything else.
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_06: I don't think adding the U of H adds anything to the conference.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_06: I'll tell you what, okay, it adds one thing.
- 1:12:41SPEAKER_06: Competition.
- 1:12:43SPEAKER_06: They're a very competitive program.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_06: They're they're a staple in the American conference, the best G5.
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_06: They do have a good fan base, they have a good backing as a program, but it's not and it, but it's not newly competitive, like they've been competitive for years.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_06: And we're talking about a team that was in the Southwest conference with us, with Texas Tech.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_06: So we already have a tough time recruiting against U of H as they are.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_06: Notice how every time a player transfers out of Texas Tech, there's a good chance they're going to Houston out of all sports.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_06: If they're going to any school out of Texas Tech, the most likely is U of H.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_06: Literally.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_06: Like, I'm not that's not even a guess.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_06: I know it, even without looking it up.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_06: So imagine that in the P5 status.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_06: Because just because of the sheer size of the city of Houston and the allure of playing at home, that's there.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_06: So while here's the problem I have with it.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_06: Do they deserve it?
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_06: Do I want them there?
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_06: No.
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_06: And the good news is Texas Tech isn't the only program that feels that way.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_06: Texas Tech, Texas, TCU, Baylor, OU, Oklahoma State, and everybody else will all agree with us.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_06: They don't want the more competition there, and they don't want another Texas team.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_06: So, like I said, they deserve it, yes.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_06: Do I want it?
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_06: No.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_06: And I don't think they'll ever be added because of it.
- 1:14:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we don't really gain anything from it.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, uh, we already have that recruiting bed.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_05: We don't need to take over Houston, you know.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_05: We don't need to have that in the Big 12, it's already there, you know.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_05: So uh I can understand a UCF or a Cincinnati in a place that the Big 12 does not have recruiting ties to, gaining those teams and those programs, I think that would be good for the conference.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_05: With Houston, not so much.
- 1:14:32SPEAKER_05: So, no, I would pass.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_06: And plus, there's the extra things like it's uh quotation marks commuter school.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_06: I'm not trying to rip on any U of H here.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_06: It's the same thing can be applied to UCF, though.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_06: It gets the same sort of criticism, but at the same time, it's just it doesn't have that campus culture.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_06: The uh the stadium, the facilities aren't quite what they are in the Big 12, which I keep coming back to.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_06: So it's just it's again lower on the list, and uh, but the on-field production and on the basketball court, it's hard to ignore.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_06: They do get it.
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_06: They they they're like Texas Tech, they have the ship on their shoulder, they have something to prove, even more so.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_06: So it's it's it's it's inspiring, but I selfishly, I don't want them here.
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, agreed fully.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_05: So no, uh, yes to UCF and Cincy, no to Memphis and Houston so far.
- 1:15:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we we still have plenty of schools to cover, so we do, we do.
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_05: I'm I can't wait for that BYU episode.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be the last one, it's gonna be the finale.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_05: Okay, okay.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_05: Spoiler alert the finale.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_05: Yes!
- 1:15:43SPEAKER_06: I feel like everyone listening thinks I'm Mormon.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_06: I promise you I'm not brothers, come in.
- 1:15:51SPEAKER_06: I have a problem with Mormons.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_06: I'm definitely a uh Texas raised Catholic, so don't I'm not Mormon.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_05: There you go.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_05: Not not more officially non-Mormon is Tristan McGonal.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_05: So uh all of y'all know.
- 1:16:05SPEAKER_05: Uh my final quick fire question, it has nothing to do with sports.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_05: I saw Black Widow last night, and I was very happy with uh the movie, and I really enjoyed having a Marvel movie back.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_05: Uh, Tristan, what is your favorite movie franchise, and why?
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_05: You know the answer.
- 1:16:26SPEAKER_05: I know the people don't know it's Star Wars.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_06: It's Star Wars, mostly because I grew up with it.
- 1:16:34SPEAKER_06: It was Star Wars was always a big deal in my household.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_06: The costumes, Halloween, the toys, the lightsabers, the action figures.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_06: Uh, we had a ton of them.
- 1:16:43SPEAKER_06: It was always Star Wars.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_06: My dad was my dad loved Star Wars, so we love Star Wars.
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_06: Uh, it's Star Wars, dude.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_06: It's it's it's the best-selling franchise of all time for a reason.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_06: It's not anymore.
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_06: Okay, wow.
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_06: All right, no, that makes sense.
- 1:16:56SPEAKER_06: I can see Marvel passing them up now by now.
- 1:16:58SPEAKER_06: So, uh, because Star Wars is older.
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_06: Um, but that that is that it's definitely Star Wars, man.
- 1:17:04SPEAKER_06: It's I grew up with it, I still love it.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_06: I still go and see every single movie in theaters when they come out.
- 1:17:09SPEAKER_06: It's Star Wars, definitely Star Wars.
- 1:17:11SPEAKER_06: What about you?
- 1:17:13SPEAKER_05: Mine, mine has been overtaken by Marvel.
- 1:17:15SPEAKER_05: I uh I really enjoyed what was it before?
- 1:17:19SPEAKER_05: Um, before, so like what you said growing up with these movie franchises, your favorite is always the most nostalgic, what you grew up with.
- 1:17:27SPEAKER_05: Uh, what you I you know, you just watched a ton as a kid.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_05: And I didn't watch a lot of Star Wars growing up.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_05: I didn't watch a lot of Lord of the Rings growing up.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_05: I watched Harry Potter growing up, and I I really I really enjoyed the Harry Potter movies.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_05: Uh I watched them with my my sister and my cousins all the time.
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, went there for birthday.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_05: They always released like the a day or two before my birthday.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_05: Uh, so we would always go like like for the birthday or whatever, and and go see whatever Prisoner of Ask Band, whatever came out.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_05: Um, it was Harry Potter, now it's Marvel.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_05: I'm a I'm I've love those movies.
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_05: I love how they all tie together, especially with these new TV shows that are expanding the universe a little more.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_05: Uh, I really do enjoy them uh that much.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_05: And and really, any of these just comes down to what you watched as a kid and what you kind of you know identify with.
- 1:18:15SPEAKER_06: For sure, man.
- 1:18:16SPEAKER_06: And have those two big those two you were just like mentioning there.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_06: I have to go Harry Potter.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_06: I like Harry Potter a little more than the Marvel movies because Harry Potter, it's it's a little more original.
- 1:18:25SPEAKER_06: You don't really know where you're getting when you're watching the first time.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_06: With the Marvel movies, you kind of get what you're getting.
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_06: It's superhero versus bad guy.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_06: You know the superhero's gonna win.
- 1:18:32SPEAKER_06: So with the with Aries.
- 1:18:33SPEAKER_05: But isn't that everything?
- 1:18:34SPEAKER_05: But isn't that everything?
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_05: What do you mean?
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_05: It's the it's the good guy versus the bad guy.
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_06: It is it's everything, but different stories go out go about it differently.
- 1:18:44SPEAKER_06: With with the Marvel movies, it's about as basic as you get, it's about as like like flat line trope.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_06: There's a good guy and a bad guy.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_06: That's it.
- 1:18:55SPEAKER_06: Harry Potter, you get it too, but it's just a different setting.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_06: You don't see the uh wizard school everywhere.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_06: Superheroes have been done.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_06: The wizard school has not been done until Harry Potter.
- 1:19:06SPEAKER_06: So that's all I'm getting at.
- 1:19:07SPEAKER_06: And plus, I'm a McGonagal.
- 1:19:10SPEAKER_05: You gotta, yeah, you gotta, yeah.
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_06: Obviously, I'm gonna like the McGonagall movies more because that's the reason why people know how to pronounce my last name.
- 1:19:19SPEAKER_06: To this day, I still get like the Harry Potter movies.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_05: I'm like, you're you're gonna get that the rest, you're gonna get that the rest of your life.
- 1:19:25SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_05: People know, especially our generation that grew up with it.
- 1:19:29SPEAKER_06: For sure.
- 1:19:29SPEAKER_06: I'll I'll always be like Professor McGonagall.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_06: I'm like, yes, I don't I don't think it's slame at all.
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_06: I always I always get a kick out of it.
- 1:19:36SPEAKER_06: I'm always like, absolutely, it's like the Harry Potter movies.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_05: You're much more trash than the Harry Potter Professor McGonagall.
- 1:19:42SPEAKER_06: That's for sure.
- 1:19:43SPEAKER_06: That's for sure.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_05: You're you're trash.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_06: I'm glad she was a good guy.
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_05: Imagine if she was a villain, your last name, Vader.
- 1:19:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, those it would be tough.
- 1:19:53SPEAKER_05: Snape or something, you know.
- 1:19:55SPEAKER_05: Snape Malfoy.
- 1:19:58SPEAKER_05: That would just suck.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_05: But that was my question, just to kind of spice it up a little bit, get it away.
- 1:20:03SPEAKER_06: Just some random honorable mention lore of the rings, Jurassic Park.
- 1:20:07SPEAKER_06: I I have to watch those movies.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_05: So you're big, you your dino love gone up tremendously.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_06: I love dinos.
- 1:20:16SPEAKER_05: You you love dinosaurs, but you've like loved dinosaurs like tremendously more in the past like few years of your life, dude.
- 1:20:24SPEAKER_06: I I love I love history and I love nature docs, and wherever you combine them like natural history, dinosaurs were really cool.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_06: So I like learning about dinosaurs and ancient beings and all that and ancient humans.
- 1:20:36SPEAKER_06: It's awesome.
- 1:20:37SPEAKER_06: So big wow, this is talking tech, by the way.
- 1:20:40SPEAKER_05: Talking talking dino pod.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_05: But all right, man, that was it for the quick fire questions.
- 1:20:48SPEAKER_05: Let's move on to our final segment, like we do every single week.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_05: Song of the week, and we have a theme this week.
- 1:20:55SPEAKER_05: We are doing covers for our song of the week.
- 1:20:59SPEAKER_05: You and me both love covers.
- 1:21:01SPEAKER_05: Uh, we we just think, you know, having, or at least me, I can't speak for you, but uh just somebody doing a version of a song that's already been done, but kind of switching it up a little bit and having a different perspective or a different take on it.
- 1:21:14SPEAKER_05: I just really love seeing it.
- 1:21:15SPEAKER_05: So, what what is your cover song?
- 1:21:17SPEAKER_06: Oh, you spoke for me, especially when they like switch up the tempo, the instruments, the instruments, and the uh the the genre, even it's really cool to see because a lot of songs are just fabulous, fabulously written.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_06: So that deserve to all the love to be covered by a different artist.
- 1:21:33SPEAKER_06: All right, so mine, I'm going with an all-timer, like an absolute hall of fame song, and it's a country song, an all-timer, obviously.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_06: It's me.
- 1:21:44SPEAKER_06: Forever and ever.
- 1:21:45SPEAKER_06: Amen.
- 1:21:46SPEAKER_06: By Josh Turner, Randy Travis.
- 1:21:50SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna love you forever, forever and ever, amen.
- 1:22:00SPEAKER_06: Okay, dude.
- 1:22:02SPEAKER_06: Obviously, you know the song, yeah.
- 1:22:04SPEAKER_06: It's an all-time country song, all-time love song.
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_06: I need all of you, all the all the dudes out here listening to put the song on with your lady and just be like, This is how I feel about you.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah, major brownie points.
- 1:22:20SPEAKER_06: A beautiful rendition of the song.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_06: He even country fight it even more.
- 1:22:24SPEAKER_06: And the guy, Josh Turner, just has a beautiful voice.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_06: He just is his voice is better than Randy Travis's, and he just knocks it out of the park.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_06: And so it's it's a phenomenal song.
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_05: I'm not dishing Randy Travis, I'm just saying this guy has a freaking voice, so like you know, you know, there's certain artists where you just kind of you is that him?
- 1:22:44SPEAKER_05: Is that you know it could be somebody else, but both of those guys have super unique voices.
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_06: Great point, dude, for sure.
- 1:22:50SPEAKER_06: And it it's a very true to the original cover, which I like too.
- 1:22:55SPEAKER_06: I like I like the the completely different and the true to form covers, as long as it's not disrespectful and bad.
- 1:23:02SPEAKER_06: I really do like them.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_06: So, what do you got for me?
- 1:23:04SPEAKER_05: My cover song of the week is Call Me the Breeze by John Mayer.
- 1:23:12SPEAKER_03: They call me the breeze.
- 1:23:20SPEAKER_05: It is originally song sung by Leonard Skinnard.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_05: Uh, great rendition.
- 1:23:25SPEAKER_05: Both of them are awesome.
- 1:23:26SPEAKER_05: Uh, John Mayer, of course, with his smooth, kind of soft rock kind of tone, slows it down a little bit, but it's off of his album Paradise Valley, which is one of his best albums that he's put out.
- 1:23:37SPEAKER_06: Very country.
- 1:23:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, very country, very folky vibes to it.
- 1:23:41SPEAKER_05: Um, but this one's just great.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_05: Call me the breeze.
- 1:23:43SPEAKER_05: The original one is great.
- 1:23:44SPEAKER_05: It's more of kind of an upbeat, up-tempo dance song by Leonard Skinnard.
- 1:23:49SPEAKER_05: But then John Mayer slows it down a little bit and makes it his own.
- 1:23:52SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's a great, it's a great rendition.
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_05: If you haven't listened to it, go listen to it right now.
- 1:23:56SPEAKER_06: Boy, cow, that took a long time to do a John Mayer song.
- 1:23:59SPEAKER_05: I know.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_05: I I I've had plenty that I could have chosen for John Mayer, but uh this one is just when I think of cover songs, this is always one of the first ones that pops into my head.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, man.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_06: And you and I are huge John Mayer songs.
- 1:24:12SPEAKER_06: So, how about I do this real quick?
- 1:24:14unknown: All right.
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_06: Can I add two more songs of the week?
- 1:24:17SPEAKER_06: Wow.
- 1:24:17SPEAKER_06: Okay, do you want to add two more?
- 1:24:19SPEAKER_06: You, I want you to answer it too.
- 1:24:21SPEAKER_06: Favorite John Mayer song.
- 1:24:22SPEAKER_05: Oh, ooh, that okay.
- 1:24:24SPEAKER_05: Um, favorite John Mayer song of all time.
- 1:24:28SPEAKER_05: I think it's in the blood.
- 1:24:30SPEAKER_05: I really say in the blood.
- 1:24:32SPEAKER_06: You can take in the blood.
- 1:24:33SPEAKER_05: Oh, you wanted that?
- 1:24:35SPEAKER_06: I did want in the blood because, dude, that's that song.
- 1:24:37SPEAKER_06: I think it's so gosh darn good, and it's so gosh darn country, which is why I love it so much.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_06: And it's well, I'm sure that's why you like it so much, too.
- 1:24:46SPEAKER_06: What do you have to say about it?
- 1:24:47SPEAKER_05: That one's so great.
- 1:24:49SPEAKER_05: I just I I love the tone of it.
- 1:24:51SPEAKER_05: I love the the harsh, uh, the harsh like guitar that's in it.
- 1:24:56SPEAKER_05: You know, you just you really feel the instrumental from it.
- 1:25:00SPEAKER_05: Um, but it it is, it's it's it's kind of more of a country tone to it.
- 1:25:04SPEAKER_05: And I I I really enjoy John Mayer's uh slowed down country kind of stuff.
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_04: Could I change it if I wanted?
- 1:25:11SPEAKER_04: Can I rise above the flood?
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_04: Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?
- 1:25:20SPEAKER_06: What's so good about John Mayer is he's a real musician, he keeps it raw for the most part, like it's his raw vocals, raw instrumentals.
- 1:25:29SPEAKER_06: And if you're taking in the blood, which was my first pick, I'm gonna take daughters.
- 1:25:40SPEAKER_03: So mothers be good to your daughters too.
- 1:25:46SPEAKER_05: Okay, yeah.
- 1:25:47SPEAKER_05: I I thought that's the one I thought you were gonna choose.
- 1:25:49SPEAKER_06: Uh dude, no, in the blood is I think that's his best song.
- 1:25:53SPEAKER_06: Um, but daughters, I think it's an old school iconic song by him, and it's something that like I think his songwriting really rings true in and in the blood.
- 1:26:02SPEAKER_06: Both the songwriting in both of them is phenomenal.
- 1:26:05SPEAKER_06: So that's kind of fun.
- 1:26:06SPEAKER_06: We got four songs for the listeners today, dude.
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_06: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:26:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, we're we're just out here giving you the songs of the week.
- 1:26:12SPEAKER_05: The you know, we'll add both of these to the playlist as well.
- 1:26:16SPEAKER_05: Of which, speaking, you can follow both of those playlists, one on Spotify, one is on Apple Music.
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_05: We will post the link on Twitter to those songs of the week.
- 1:26:27SPEAKER_05: Um, I did want to just do a quick shout-out when with the John Mayer vibes going.
- 1:26:32SPEAKER_05: Also, with you know, two songs I love from John Mayer, Vultures and Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, both from the continuing album.
- 1:26:39SPEAKER_05: Um basic.
- 1:26:40SPEAKER_05: I I know they're great.
- 1:26:41SPEAKER_05: They're no vultures isn't basic.
- 1:26:43SPEAKER_06: Vultures is yeah, slow dancing in a burning room.
- 1:26:47SPEAKER_05: It's just so good, man.
- 1:26:48SPEAKER_05: You just I mean, like you said earlier, get with get with your girl and and just dance in the living room, major brownie points.
- 1:26:55SPEAKER_06: For sure.
- 1:26:55SPEAKER_06: I think I think my uh uh prever and ever AM gets uh a little more, but okay, we'll have to see.
- 1:27:01SPEAKER_06: We'll have to see what the listeners think.
- 1:27:03SPEAKER_05: We'll see.
