- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Coming up on NHL Unscripted is a cinephile in sixty
- 0:24Speaker 1: that's right, Tal takes center stage the Whalers, his documentary
- 0:27Speaker 1: on NHL Network, premiering April thirteenth, Plus our special guest
- 0:31Speaker 1: this week, Whytt Russell, who has stories for days all
- 0:35Speaker 1: but stories are playing hockey and of course being an actor.
- 0:38Speaker 1: You know him, you love him. And also happy trails
- 0:40Speaker 1: to Scott Oak. Scott Oak retiring with the great broadcasters
- 0:43Speaker 1: of all time. We kick things off those I'm back
- 0:45Speaker 1: from the peg lots going on right now in the
- 0:48Speaker 1: world of hockey. Before we get to action on the ice,
- 0:51Speaker 1: how about Patrick wat JD. I mean, this guy is
- 0:53Speaker 1: a legend in Quebec for many years. Obviously he's worked
- 0:56Speaker 1: in the Montreal Canadians and now unforcing for Patty. How
- 1:00Speaker 1: about you get fired with four games left.
- 1:02Speaker 2: In the season.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Now, this is something we've seen before quite frankly, just
- 1:05Speaker 1: a week ago Vegas Golden Knights eight games left. John
- 1:08Speaker 1: Torrella is in. I feel look like Bruce Cassid kind
- 1:11Speaker 1: of lost the team. But to get rid of Patrick
- 1:13Speaker 1: Waugh with the Isles at that point, sitting in a
- 1:16Speaker 1: playoff spot, struggling. Obviously, they I Pete de Boor, arguably
- 1:19Speaker 1: the most covetant coaching free agent on the market now
- 1:21Speaker 1: was Nate said last week, There's only so much a
- 1:23Speaker 1: guy like Towarts can do. John Stevens, his former coach,
- 1:26Speaker 1: is running the system. What do you make of the
- 1:27Speaker 1: Islanders think with four games left, Saint Patrick, you're done well.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I think they looked at Vegas, who seems to set
- 1:34Speaker 3: the tone, and they're like, oh wow, Vegas is three
- 1:37Speaker 3: and oh that fuck it, let's just pull the trigger.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Let's just do it now. But I mean, listen, here's
- 1:42Speaker 3: the thing with Patrick. And don't get me wrong, he's
- 1:45Speaker 3: a legend, but Islanders have boasted like some of the
- 1:48Speaker 3: worst defensive metrics over two years. And you know, they
- 1:52Speaker 3: got they don't have the deepest team, but they have
- 1:54Speaker 3: some good players on that hockey team, So I don't
- 1:57Speaker 3: know if they've got enough. They'd some of the worst
- 1:59Speaker 3: penalty killing they if not for Sorokan, you know, they'd
- 2:03Speaker 3: be among the bottom teams in the league. So when
- 2:07Speaker 3: you have a guy like Pete de Boor who's got
- 2:09Speaker 3: a track record of getting guys at the conference finals
- 2:11Speaker 3: and then some I mean, he is a fantastic coach.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Whatever you want to say, how it ended in Dallas,
- 2:18Speaker 3: I mean, why wouldn't you take a shot at it now?
- 2:20Speaker 3: It sucks because Patrick Row's got two years left on
- 2:23Speaker 3: a deal and then you sign him to you know,
- 2:25Speaker 3: five year deal for the boor. But you know, Matthew
- 2:28Speaker 3: Darts has clearly put a line in the sand that
- 2:31Speaker 3: it's this is his team. He's going to make these decisions,
- 2:33Speaker 3: and listen, you got to respect him for it. I
- 2:36Speaker 3: think the balls on him in his first year as
- 2:38Speaker 3: a GM to pull this off, you know, and say
- 2:41Speaker 3: and honestly say that it's not I don't think it's
- 2:43Speaker 3: so much for this year, but it's for years moving forward.
- 2:46Speaker 3: I think you bringing a guy that could get you
- 2:47Speaker 3: a coaching bump. I don't think they have hopes of
- 2:49Speaker 3: winning the Cup or competing, but to get in I
- 2:52Speaker 3: think will be valuable experience for them. And then now
- 2:56Speaker 3: you're a team that makes the playoffs, you got a
- 2:58Speaker 3: brand new coach, you got free agency coming around the
- 3:01Speaker 3: corner this year, and you got some aid pieces that
- 3:05Speaker 3: you potentially can move for guys that are top guys
- 3:07Speaker 3: in the league, Like you become a very you know,
- 3:09Speaker 3: a destination that teams want, players want to come to,
- 3:12Speaker 3: and top end talent, and you have Matthew Shaffer. So
- 3:14Speaker 3: I think it's all lining up to kind of the
- 3:17Speaker 3: long term a Perennial Cup contender. So I like this move.
- 3:22Speaker 3: It sucks for coaches. I mean, I anytime you lose
- 3:25Speaker 3: a job like this, it stinks. But I think Patty
- 3:27Speaker 3: Hua will be just fine collecting his paycheck for two
- 3:30Speaker 3: years in Quebec on the Lake. I think it's like
- 3:35Speaker 3: Lac Dusheney and I think he's gonna be doing just fine.
- 3:38Speaker 1: But it's interesting because kind of what Jady was saying
- 3:41Speaker 1: with regards to Vegas, like Tortrella, I mean, he's like
- 3:44Speaker 1: a broadcast. He's getting paid per game here, Like it's
- 3:46Speaker 1: this is not a long term deal. This is just
- 3:47Speaker 1: for the rest of the season and we'll see how it goes.
- 3:49Speaker 1: If it doesn't work out, fine, torts will go back
- 3:51Speaker 1: to ESPN. If not, maybe not with de bor it's like, no,
- 3:53Speaker 1: he is going to be the coach now long term.
- 3:55Speaker 1: And for a while they just felt like I guess
- 3:58Speaker 1: maybe the messaging wasn't being heard, the results weren't there.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Also think part of this is that I think Theers
- 4:04Speaker 1: wanted to get a jump on this because in case
- 4:06Speaker 1: the Leaves, I think a lot of us think Craig
- 4:07Speaker 1: Bruby's working on his last days before chief is out.
- 4:10Speaker 1: The Leaves show to hire Pete bor We'll we'll get
- 4:12Speaker 1: them too. So to JD's points, not only the fact
- 4:14Speaker 1: let's try to salvage the rest of the season, but
- 4:16Speaker 1: let's go get probably the best coaching hire available.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Did you play for Pete de Boor gd or.
- 4:21Speaker 3: No, no, no, I heard great things from you know.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Okay, I thought I thought maybe you crossed over, but no, yeah.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Maybe when I look at this and I see Pete
- 4:31Speaker 4: de Boor being hired, I look at like like JD
- 4:34Speaker 4: for the future, and I think too. Also, Pete de
- 4:37Speaker 4: Boor was saying he's probably he wasn't going to blink twice,
- 4:40Speaker 4: knowing that he has Matthew Shaeffer and Sorokan as his
- 4:43Speaker 4: kind of his staples, And to what Jedd was saying, like,
- 4:47Speaker 4: I think a big part of this and I think
- 4:49Speaker 4: Patrick wah did a great job with the Islanders, because
- 4:53Speaker 4: I think if there was a perfect coach for Matthew
- 4:55Speaker 4: Shaeffer to start his career as a rookie, I think
- 4:57Speaker 4: Patrick Waugh was it because he just let the reins
- 4:59Speaker 4: off him, just let him go, which I think was
- 5:02Speaker 4: good for him. And now you have Pete de Boor,
- 5:04Speaker 4: come who comes in, who's more of an X and
- 5:06Speaker 4: O's guys, which I think Patrick Waugh, you know he did,
- 5:10Speaker 4: he did what he did to a certain point and
- 5:12Speaker 4: then it caught up to them. I think, like jad
- 5:14Speaker 4: was saying, defensively, and you know, now you have Pete
- 5:18Speaker 4: de Boor, who's definitely for the future. And I think
- 5:20Speaker 4: Matthew darsh made this higher thinking maybe maybe he saves
- 5:24Speaker 4: some money, you know, hiring him now rather than the
- 5:27Speaker 4: off season, knowing that there's gonna be more guys available,
- 5:30Speaker 4: maybe the price goes up.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Who knows.
- 5:32Speaker 4: I don't know that that's that's a possibility too. So
- 5:34Speaker 4: I think he jumps on it, which is smart and
- 5:37Speaker 4: I like to hire and and to j D's point two,
- 5:41Speaker 4: like Patrick, right, what's that?
- 5:45Speaker 3: Like Pete de Boor wanted to go there because, like
- 5:46Speaker 3: Peter Boor just kind of pick of the litter.
- 5:48Speaker 4: No, I mean, but like, if he waits till the
- 5:50Speaker 4: off season, he probably has more options.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Yeah, and they I think that everybody's calling him for sure.
- 5:56Speaker 2: For sure.
- 5:56Speaker 4: I would just think though he sees obviously Schaeffer and
- 5:59Speaker 4: Sorok and he's like, all right, I'm going you know,
- 6:02Speaker 4: those are two nice pieces.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:04Speaker 1: I think ultimately Islanders are done this year, only four
- 6:06Speaker 1: games left. Slotting at the wrong time. I'm just curious
- 6:09Speaker 1: for you tell you grew up, Patrick wwah posters on
- 6:11Speaker 1: your wall. This has to hurt a little bit.
- 6:14Speaker 5: Tough fellow McGill alum Matthew darsh dropping that hammer on
- 6:19Speaker 5: his fellow Keebec quad listen, Patrick wwab pretty much raised
- 6:24Speaker 5: me as a child not to date myself too much,
- 6:26Speaker 5: so it's rough to see him lose a job, especially
- 6:29Speaker 5: when he was kind of out of the league for
- 6:31Speaker 5: a long time before getting this gig. So I don't
- 6:33Speaker 5: know when he'll be back, but he'll always be a legend.
- 6:36Speaker 5: And I think what both JD and Nate were saying,
- 6:39Speaker 5: like Pete de Bor was going to have at least
- 6:41Speaker 5: three or four offers this summer, they might as well
- 6:43Speaker 5: jump on him right now and just snap him.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Up somewhere roll Corey, perhaps applauding as Patrick WWAD loses
- 6:49Speaker 1: this job all right, throwing fits right now. This happens
- 6:51Speaker 1: out of the New Jersey Devils as they fire executive
- 6:54Speaker 1: vice president GM Tom Fitzgeralder missing the playoffs second time
- 6:57Speaker 1: in three seasons, was watching the Flyers Devil's game Nate
- 7:00Speaker 1: Total ESPN. They had the number sixty seven percent the
- 7:03Speaker 1: Devil's odds of making the playoffs when Hughes is healthy.
- 7:06Speaker 1: After you got hurt, you see the numbers. Dwindle, dwindle
- 7:09Speaker 1: zero point six percent. They lose the fire stympe, They're done.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Fitz would join the Devils assistant gym in twenty fifteen,
- 7:14Speaker 1: took over the GM dues from Racier in twenty twenty.
- 7:16Speaker 1: So that's three teams now who need a general manager,
- 7:19Speaker 1: and fitz was the guy there for a while. This
- 7:20Speaker 1: is not surprising to me, but I only want to
- 7:23Speaker 1: illuminate the fact that with Hughes they were a playoff team.
- 7:26Speaker 1: This is how critical one injury can be and ends
- 7:29Speaker 1: up completely undermined the entire season and costing him his job.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Yeah, Tommy Fitzgerald did a you know he did you know,
- 7:36Speaker 4: he did his job and basically what happened was they
- 7:39Speaker 4: again a hundred points season to make the playoffs, and
- 7:41Speaker 4: everything just kind of regress. You get injuries, and you know,
- 7:44Speaker 4: you mentioned to Jack Hughes not being healthy is a
- 7:46Speaker 4: huge blow to their team, no matter what I mean,
- 7:49Speaker 4: even when they did make the playoffs and he I
- 7:51Speaker 4: mean you saw him kind of carry his team against
- 7:55Speaker 4: the Rangers in that series. So like this is a
- 7:57Speaker 4: big loss for them because I think he you know,
- 8:00Speaker 4: he was building this team in the right direction and
- 8:03Speaker 4: it just those those pieces that he had just didn't
- 8:06Speaker 4: they didn't work out. Like this happens sometimes where just
- 8:09Speaker 4: there's a regression and he unfortunately, because that he has
- 8:12Speaker 4: to go.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I you know, it's it's tough because you want
- 8:18Speaker 3: to say, you know, if Jack Hughes is healthy, but
- 8:21Speaker 3: you got at least tread Water. You know, you need
- 8:23Speaker 3: some depth. You got Nico Hesher. There's a lot of
- 8:25Speaker 3: guys that need to take a look in the mirror
- 8:28Speaker 3: in Jersey. You know, Timo Meyer two was a little
- 8:30Speaker 3: streaky this season. You know, Luke Hughes didn't have a
- 8:34Speaker 3: great year. I know, he had some injury troubles. He
- 8:36Speaker 3: didn't have a great year. The goaltending did never great year.
- 8:38Speaker 3: So a lot of the pieces you bring in, you know,
- 8:40Speaker 3: and it's not just like Jack Hughes was was the
- 8:44Speaker 3: only reason that he got injured. They didn't play good hockey.
- 8:47Speaker 3: And I don't think the message, you know, I think
- 8:49Speaker 3: a guy that's on the hot seat is Sheldon Keith.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Now I think I don't know if that message has
- 8:53Speaker 3: gone very stale there, but it just did not seem
- 8:57Speaker 3: like anything is clicked. So I expect that they bring
- 9:00Speaker 3: in a new GM, new coach. That's another place like
- 9:04Speaker 3: that's that's the place that's kind of enticing for the
- 9:07Speaker 3: coaches that are out there. So I don't know who's left.
- 9:09Speaker 3: I mean, you could see it towards maybe coming into there. Again.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Who else is the available coaches right now that are
- 9:14Speaker 3: sitting at home waiting. It's got to be a few.
- 9:16Speaker 2: I'd love to see college guys to come up. I mean,
- 9:19Speaker 2: you have a lot of you're right there.
- 9:20Speaker 3: I'd love to see Jeremy Calton get a chance back.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Yeah, there you go. You're right like a lot of
- 9:25Speaker 2: underachieving that on that team, like.
- 9:27Speaker 3: A ton like Tiamos TEAMO. They expected they made that
- 9:31Speaker 3: trade Dougie then doesn't want to get traded, so that
- 9:33Speaker 3: kind of fucks him a little bit. Yeah, and now
- 9:36Speaker 3: you know, I think they I love Luke Ques at
- 9:39Speaker 3: his best, but I think they may be over. It's
- 9:42Speaker 3: gonna be we'll see in a couple of years. But
- 9:44Speaker 3: I just feel I'm a little worried with his injury problems.
- 9:48Speaker 3: He can't shake that injury bug and he can't stay
- 9:50Speaker 3: healthy long enough. He's a great player when he's healthy.
- 9:52Speaker 3: But there needs to be more accountability on that team.
- 9:54Speaker 3: And I think they have too much talent, and maybe
- 9:57Speaker 3: that's the thing is they need more depth, they need
- 9:59Speaker 3: more guys, they need more players in the back end.
- 10:03Speaker 3: So it's just I think there's there's a lot of holes.
- 10:05Speaker 3: So the new GM coming in is going to really
- 10:07Speaker 3: have to poke and prod and see what's available. Maybe
- 10:10Speaker 3: it's GM of the Year. Kevin Adams tell right now
- 10:14Speaker 3: fantically searching for retread coaches. Randy Carlisle, Ken Hitchcock, the
- 10:19Speaker 3: recycla tron.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Our friend Bruce Boudreau could be back out there. I
- 10:22Speaker 1: HL Network Zone. We'll see which one of these coaches
- 10:24Speaker 1: could be out there again. But ultimately, tough times, right
- 10:27Speaker 1: now in New Jersey, Ottawa Centators are right now are
- 10:31Speaker 1: a playoff team. Well, by the way, there's some of them.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Gerard Gallant is a name. J Woodcraft, you're passing a lawn.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Cassidy as well.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Ouse.
- 10:36Speaker 6: There's a few others out there.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Bruce, Bruce Cassidy. There would be a good there's a
- 10:41Speaker 3: good one. I mean, listen, Cassidy's that's a good pick up.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Good pick up their tell.
- 10:47Speaker 1: So the Otawa Senators one that recording this Tuesday night.
- 10:49Speaker 1: They're ninety two points right now. They're a playoff team.
- 10:51Speaker 1: It's been well documented by the fact that they're thirty
- 10:53Speaker 1: second in team say percentage. If it was they had
- 10:56Speaker 1: even mediocre goaltending, this would be a playoff team and
- 10:59Speaker 1: they may end up making the playoffs. But what's more
- 11:01Speaker 1: fascin than I think is just even a drama they've
- 11:03Speaker 1: gone over this year, obviously leonis Olmerk the whole step
- 11:06Speaker 1: and them pulling himself out of the starting lineup in
- 11:08Speaker 1: a loss against Tampa, getting pulled the next game against Florida,
- 11:11Speaker 1: followed by Keith Kitchuck's comments on his sons Brady and
- 11:14Speaker 1: Matthews podcast Wingman, which listeners interpreted as a direct shot
- 11:18Speaker 1: against Omrik and the Senators. More drama which continues Olmeric
- 11:22Speaker 1: Sonning's thirty three million dollar extension then taking an indefinite
- 11:25Speaker 1: lead from the team fob with the team statement admonishing
- 11:27Speaker 1: TrooLS and sick people, Eric Carlson's wife filing for order
- 11:31Speaker 1: protection against Mike Hoffin's fiance after the latter made threatening
- 11:35Speaker 1: statements online. Assistant gentlemanager Randy Lee resigning after allegedly harassing
- 11:39Speaker 1: a bus driver at NHL scouting Combine. Sens players captured
- 11:43Speaker 1: on video in an uber trashing their team the uber driver.
- 11:46Speaker 1: They released that you got a tip well, Jda, you
- 11:49Speaker 1: got a tip to uber driver. He releases the video
- 11:51Speaker 1: to the public to you always tip well. Shane Pintos
- 11:54Speaker 1: to spend half a season violent league gambling rules. The
- 11:57Speaker 1: Sens lose their first round pick after completing an invalided
- 11:59Speaker 1: Efgeny Dadenov tradeling directly the firing gmpre Dorian. They later
- 12:03Speaker 1: get a thirty second owner Gi Melnick died, team sold
- 12:06Speaker 1: to Michael and Lauer, and of course, HL coach Troy
- 12:09Speaker 1: Mayon fired midseason after allegedly sharing preseason scutting materials another team.
- 12:14Speaker 1: This is our nation's capital.
- 12:15Speaker 2: JD.
- 12:16Speaker 1: What the hell's gone on with Ottawa that's led to
- 12:17Speaker 1: the slide for this team that used to be one
- 12:20Speaker 1: which lost Game seven of the twenty sixteen conference final
- 12:23Speaker 1: to Pittsburgh. And they're gonna be a playoff team despite
- 12:25Speaker 1: all this drama.
- 12:26Speaker 3: They got to move that. They got to burn that
- 12:28Speaker 3: rink to the ground in Canada.
- 12:29Speaker 4: And just.
- 12:35Speaker 3: And your team and your organization has made up of
- 12:37Speaker 3: the people you bring around, and you need to bring
- 12:40Speaker 3: quality people. And not to say that these people harnish
- 12:43Speaker 3: people that made mistakes. It's a little bit of a
- 12:44Speaker 3: shit show there. Uh, But again, it seems like there's
- 12:48Speaker 3: a light at the end of the tunnel. I know
- 12:49Speaker 3: the all mark things frustrating for fans, but I just
- 12:52Speaker 3: saw a stat since his leave of absence, he's top
- 12:55Speaker 3: eight in the league in gold saves above expected. He's
- 12:58Speaker 3: eleven four and three record in those last eighteen games
- 13:02Speaker 3: that he's played. So something work for him. I listen
- 13:06Speaker 3: the the whole to Chuck comments, the Brady and his
- 13:10Speaker 3: you know, Keith is gonna run his mouth. You've got
- 13:12Speaker 3: to let him just run his mouth. I think it's
- 13:15Speaker 3: a little unfair that Brady's got a kind of answer
- 13:17Speaker 3: for that. But it's it's tough. It's an organization. When
- 13:21Speaker 3: you're in Canada, the magnifying lenses never brighter than when
- 13:24Speaker 3: you're in in our nation's capital. Nate knows this firsthand. Uh,
- 13:29Speaker 3: it's just you have to watch out. You gotta walk
- 13:32Speaker 3: on eggshells, and you got to be because everybody's watching
- 13:34Speaker 3: and everybody's hoping you slip up, because just the media,
- 13:37Speaker 3: they're not to say that they wish for you to
- 13:40Speaker 3: to do to fuck up, but you know, stories are
- 13:44Speaker 3: more juicy when there's a little bit of a negative
- 13:46Speaker 3: connotation to them in my mind. So yeah, I hopefully
- 13:50Speaker 3: they can make the playoffs through this. I don't know
- 13:51Speaker 3: how long they'll last. I think they're dangerous if they
- 13:54Speaker 3: get in, They're they're They're a good hockey team. If
- 13:56Speaker 3: you watch them, they're very good hockey team. Travis Green
- 13:59Speaker 3: deserves a lot of a lot of accolades in respect
- 14:02Speaker 3: for what he's done with this team with all the
- 14:03Speaker 3: injuries too late in the season. So yeah, I'm pulling
- 14:06Speaker 3: for him. I'm pulling for all Mark with his you
- 14:08Speaker 3: know his you know I I mental health stuff near
- 14:12Speaker 3: and dear to my heart. So whether it's true or not,
- 14:15Speaker 3: or what's going on, I I respect it and hopefully
- 14:17Speaker 3: you can kind of figure it out and you know,
- 14:19Speaker 3: take these guys in a run.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Definitely been a war of attrition, especially as you mentioned
- 14:23Speaker 1: with the Guards, their defense, the fact that Sandersman is
- 14:25Speaker 1: out their best defenseman club and Spence having to play
- 14:27Speaker 1: a lot of minutes. Again that you played there, so
- 14:29Speaker 1: you can speak to how challenging Ottawa can be.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I was there the year after the
- 14:34Speaker 4: they went to the conference finals, and it was I
- 14:36Speaker 4: was there for the kind of the.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Beginning of a lot of that you started it. Yeah,
- 14:41Speaker 2: it was all me.
- 14:42Speaker 3: I was a.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Free agent assigned me is a freezing I was there
- 14:50Speaker 4: for five months, a two year deal.
- 14:53Speaker 2: I was there for five months. I've been that was
- 14:55Speaker 2: the beginning of the end.
- 14:56Speaker 4: But yeah, I mean this, I mean without obviously without
- 14:59Speaker 4: obviously this organization has gone through a lot in the
- 15:02Speaker 4: last however many years. But to their credit, I mean,
- 15:05Speaker 4: their playoff team and they're good hockey team, and like
- 15:07Speaker 4: when you're talking about their d like Jordan Spence is
- 15:11Speaker 4: a guy they picked up in that trade and he's
- 15:13Speaker 4: been really good for them, Like he's he's he's played
- 15:15Speaker 4: some really good hockey. Another guy that but like being
- 15:18Speaker 4: in LA and seeing them in the same draft, like
- 15:21Speaker 4: Tim Stutsla, how good he looks and how good he
- 15:24Speaker 4: has had with Ottawa.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Like I see him in byfield.
- 15:27Speaker 4: All the time, and I think about that and I'm
- 15:29Speaker 4: just like, oh man, like I I hate to go
- 15:31Speaker 4: back on it, but it's just how good is he's
- 15:33Speaker 4: been for Ottawa.
- 15:34Speaker 2: It's Uh. I agree. I agree with with JD.
- 15:38Speaker 4: Like they're they're gonna be a tough team to play against,
- 15:41Speaker 4: really tough team to play against if if they get.
- 15:44Speaker 1: In, it's a dog fight right down the stretch. Right now,
- 15:46Speaker 1: the Flyers are the third spot in the metro. Try
- 15:49Speaker 1: to catch the Penguins. You've got Columbus the Red Wings
- 15:51Speaker 1: to let it tall. You think the red Wings are done,
- 15:53Speaker 1: You're saying the red Wings the ones they are gonna
- 15:54Speaker 1: be odd went out.
- 15:55Speaker 5: Oh big loss today, big loss against Columbus.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Uh.
- 16:00Speaker 5: And I mean we have more than enough empirical evidence
- 16:03Speaker 5: to show us said March is not a good month
- 16:06Speaker 5: in Detroit.
- 16:07Speaker 3: And they were a way to lose today. I know
- 16:11Speaker 3: they dominated Columbus and then sixteen seconds left, you give
- 16:14Speaker 3: up that fucking dog shit couple turnover and then over
- 16:19Speaker 3: over overtime they should have won. Jack Greaves was, yeah,
- 16:22Speaker 3: it was buzz it tonight.
- 16:24Speaker 2: He was good.
- 16:25Speaker 1: That's gonna say. It's good news is it's only a
- 16:26Speaker 1: year nine of the iSER plants.
- 16:27Speaker 3: It's they will figure it out soon. Give him an
- 16:31Speaker 3: extension bringing Kevin Adams, guys should win the gym of
- 16:34Speaker 3: the year in Buffalo. Do ship on this team.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Listen, everyone's giving Yarmo Kecklhind the credit for Troy. He
- 16:39Speaker 1: came in after Kevin Adams had built the entire roster.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Kevin Adams, guys should imagine he won gym in the year.
- 16:45Speaker 3: He's not even higher. He's out of the league.
- 16:47Speaker 2: So good.
- 16:48Speaker 1: One more top before we get to why Russell. Our
- 16:50Speaker 1: special guest Scott oak is stepping aside, absolute legend, Canadian
- 16:54Speaker 1: broadcasting icon, longtime presence in hockey in Canada, announced the
- 16:58Speaker 1: season will be his last, so hopefully drop the mic
- 17:00Speaker 1: after the playoffs you will officially do so. Remember the
- 17:02Speaker 1: Hockey and Canada team for decades. After hour segment Saturday
- 17:06Speaker 1: Night's one of the best interviews in the sport JD Nate.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Maybe a Scott Oak interview along the.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Way never played out West, I never had Yeah, I
- 17:16Speaker 3: was getting that. Ain't getting any of that.
- 17:18Speaker 1: But uh, fist pump on the way. How does he
- 17:20Speaker 1: talking to somebody else?
- 17:21Speaker 3: No, but listen, iconic voice, iconic you know, iconic everything,
- 17:26Speaker 3: and what a career. So it's it's it's always weird
- 17:29Speaker 3: when you see those guys transition out because you just
- 17:32Speaker 3: you're so used to having them around. They're just like
- 17:34Speaker 3: a little comfort pill. They're a little blanket, You're little,
- 17:37Speaker 3: your little binky, and it's like when they're gone, you're like,
- 17:39Speaker 3: oh shit, Like how big of a you know, how
- 17:42Speaker 3: big of a piece of your your life? They were
- 17:44Speaker 3: a part of you know. So it's always it's but
- 17:47Speaker 3: good luck and retirement.
- 17:49Speaker 1: How maybe a Scott Oak story. You must have interviewed
- 17:51Speaker 1: at some point. Sorry, I've spoken.
- 17:52Speaker 5: With him a few times. Sorry, I was just gonna
- 17:55Speaker 5: say I've spoken with him a few times. I'm assuming
- 17:57Speaker 5: you guys knew this. He's a huge advocate for addiction
- 18:00Speaker 5: and recovery. His his son Bruce tragically passed away years
- 18:03Speaker 5: ago from an overdose, and they actually built a facility
- 18:07Speaker 5: in Winnipeg to help other people who who are battling addictions.
- 18:12Speaker 3: So a great broadcaster and a great sorry, great broadcast
- 18:17Speaker 3: turned a great person.
- 18:18Speaker 1: I kind of out christ So you nipped it in
- 18:20Speaker 1: the bud there, go ahead and.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Ate, Yeah, that was That was kind of my interaction there,
- 18:23Speaker 4: Like when I went when I played in Winnipeg, you know,
- 18:26Speaker 4: we both did some speaking together. We did we did
- 18:30Speaker 4: something along the lines because you know, I did some
- 18:32Speaker 4: stuff for Rick Rippons Foundation when I was there, and
- 18:35Speaker 4: we did some stuff and we talked about a little bit.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Just a super nice man and knows as ship, like
- 18:42Speaker 4: knows you know, he's on it. And I didn't really know,
- 18:45Speaker 4: to be honest, like before I played in Canada, Like
- 18:47Speaker 4: I didn't really know much about Scott Oak until I
- 18:49Speaker 4: played on the Canadian teams and really tuned into the
- 18:52Speaker 4: After Hours and knew what it was about.
- 18:54Speaker 2: And you know.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Some of the some of these interviews were awesome, like
- 18:57Speaker 4: you know, you think of the interviews he had with
- 18:59Speaker 4: Ryan Reeves and how Ryan Reeves is you know, best
- 19:01Speaker 4: friends with his son, and how he talked about he
- 19:04Speaker 4: joked about you know, them being the hot tub late
- 19:06Speaker 4: and stuff, and uh, you know you think about that,
- 19:08Speaker 4: but he just you know, he's a great guy, like
- 19:10Speaker 4: like like you guys said, one of the best and
- 19:13Speaker 4: you know, all the best of.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Him in retirement.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Shoot, Tala, should we get him for you gotta get
- 19:17Speaker 3: him for an interview.
- 19:18Speaker 2: That's a good idea. Get him.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I got his info. Absolutely. I'll reach out to
- 19:22Speaker 3: the two part why at Russell interview?
- 19:23Speaker 1: What wow, scotch Not sure if there's a two part
- 19:27Speaker 1: why Russell coming up, but maybe give me a two
- 19:29Speaker 1: part Scott Oak. At some point, Nate mentioned the hot
- 19:31Speaker 1: Tub Well sadly white Russell was not in the hot
- 19:33Speaker 1: Tub time Machine, but he was in This is forty
- 19:35Speaker 1: twenty two Jump Street. Everybody wants some Black Mirror Lodge
- 19:39Speaker 1: forty nine. Our special guests and a huge hockey fan.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Wait till You're Why Russell extended cut coming up after
- 19:46Speaker 1: this and that yelling scripted.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Our next guest played collegiately at the Universe of Alabama
- 20:05Speaker 3: Huntsville before embarking on a pro career that took him
- 20:07Speaker 3: to Germany and then Netherlands. After retiring from hockey, he
- 20:11Speaker 3: jumped headfirst into the family business and has since become
- 20:14Speaker 3: one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood, with credits
- 20:17Speaker 3: including This Is forty twenty two, Jump Street, Everybody Wants
- 20:21Speaker 3: Some Black merr Goon, Last of the Enforcers, Lodge forty nine, Thunderbolts,
- 20:26Speaker 3: and Monarch Legacy of Monsters. It's whyatt Russell? Wow, why
- 20:34Speaker 3: thanks for coming? Not bad intro for.
- 20:37Speaker 6: Thank those prolific actors. That's never but thank.
- 20:42Speaker 3: You it is now. But hey, you know all all
- 20:46Speaker 3: the movies in the credits aside. I want to start
- 20:48Speaker 3: with hockey.
- 20:48Speaker 4: Uh.
- 20:49Speaker 3: I watched a lot of your interviews talking about hockey
- 20:53Speaker 3: and in the love that you have for But tell
- 20:56Speaker 3: me first, like why a goaltender and why did he
- 20:59Speaker 3: choose that?
- 21:00Speaker 6: Okay, how much time do we have as much as you?
- 21:04Speaker 7: Because I'm a little weird and everybody goalies got a
- 21:07Speaker 7: little bit of a screw loose, is sort of true.
- 21:09Speaker 7: I wasn't as weird as some of the other guys
- 21:11Speaker 7: that I played, that I played with or maybe you
- 21:13Speaker 7: played with. I was relatively normal. But so you know,
- 21:18Speaker 7: when you're playing night or you know, mini might or whatever,
- 21:22Speaker 7: I don't know what they call it. Something different now
- 21:24Speaker 7: it's like you six or whatever. Then you'd switch goalies,
- 21:29Speaker 7: like you have a set of goalie pads. Everybody plays
- 21:31Speaker 7: goal like no parent wants their kid to play goalie.
- 21:35Speaker 7: And I would cycle through and every time that we'd
- 21:39Speaker 7: play a game, I would like, I think it really
- 21:43Speaker 7: clicked in my head that if.
- 21:45Speaker 6: They don't score, they can't win.
- 21:48Speaker 7: And like I was extremely unhealthily competitive as a child.
- 21:53Speaker 6: You know, my dad played professional.
- 21:55Speaker 7: Sports, my granddad played professional sports. My cousin played professional
- 21:58Speaker 7: baseball for twenty years. So like sort of DNA, I
- 22:01Speaker 7: can't really do much about it. And so like the
- 22:04Speaker 7: winning part was, you know, ye contagious.
- 22:08Speaker 6: I wanted to.
- 22:09Speaker 7: Win, and and my coach basically said, Kurt, if you
- 22:13Speaker 7: don't put Wyatt like in full time in the.
- 22:15Speaker 6: Net, can't have him on the team.
- 22:17Speaker 7: Because when I when I wouldn't play goal and we
- 22:21Speaker 7: went into the offensive zone, I would stay back with
- 22:24Speaker 7: the other goalie and be like we got two goalies, never.
- 22:30Speaker 6: In the score.
- 22:30Speaker 7: And then the coach was like, dude, you like, you know,
- 22:33Speaker 7: in jest, like I can't have him on the team
- 22:35Speaker 7: if he doesn't play goals.
- 22:36Speaker 6: So I played full time goal when I was like six,
- 22:39Speaker 6: you know, like I was very young.
- 22:41Speaker 7: But I just loved it because I also there was
- 22:43Speaker 7: also forget of getting psychological about it from a very
- 22:49Speaker 7: young age, like my parents are famous, right, so everywhere
- 22:52Speaker 7: you go people are looking at you. And I loved
- 22:57Speaker 7: the idea when I watched the Kings play because a
- 23:00Speaker 7: Kings fan growing up, that the goalie wore a mask.
- 23:03Speaker 7: You couldn't see him, and it was very easy to judge.
- 23:07Speaker 7: It's the goaltending and pitching is one of the easiest
- 23:10Speaker 7: things to judge, Like in sports. You can look he
- 23:14Speaker 7: has a win and a lost record, and a goals
- 23:18Speaker 7: against average and a SAB percentage. If if your goals
- 23:20Speaker 7: against average and your say percentage or like top five
- 23:23Speaker 7: in the league, you're one of the best goalies in
- 23:25Speaker 7: the league. There's just nothing you can do about it.
- 23:27Speaker 7: If I got a shout out every game, I'd be
- 23:28Speaker 7: playing in the NHL. There's nothing you can.
- 23:30Speaker 6: Do about it.
- 23:30Speaker 7: So that very cut and dry element of playing goaltender
- 23:36Speaker 7: goaltender was like appealing to me because everything else in
- 23:40Speaker 7: my life was so subjective and the world that my
- 23:43Speaker 7: parents lived in was so subjective and I was just,
- 23:46Speaker 7: you know, probably nature born that way, like I, you know,
- 23:49Speaker 7: I like things to be organized, and I live my
- 23:54Speaker 7: life like that as much as I can, so that
- 23:56Speaker 7: that psychology appealed to my to my my my brain.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Yeah, why when we go way back, I remember playing
- 24:05Speaker 4: against you actually, yeah it was at Vancouver, I think
- 24:07Speaker 4: it was. We were like eleven or twelve and seeing
- 24:09Speaker 4: your parents in the stands obviously, and I remember you
- 24:12Speaker 4: being goalie. I mean, like, I guess you get to college,
- 24:17Speaker 4: Like how do you end up at Alabama Huntsville playing
- 24:19Speaker 4: college hockey? And like how was that transition leaving? You know,
- 24:23Speaker 4: you're a kid from La Kingsta goalie and then you
- 24:27Speaker 4: end up at Alabama Huntsville, Like how does that happen?
- 24:29Speaker 7: It's it's sort of a long story, but you got
- 24:34Speaker 7: a little time. It's interesting because it all ties to
- 24:37Speaker 7: California hockey and how specifically California hockey came to be
- 24:44Speaker 7: what it is now because a lot of kids come
- 24:46Speaker 7: out of California like it's a good it's actually a
- 24:48Speaker 7: very good place to play hockey. Until you're about fifteen,
- 24:51Speaker 7: you know, it's very good. Minor hockey associations to junior Ducks,
- 24:54Speaker 7: the junior Kings, and so when I was young, the
- 24:58Speaker 7: junior teams was like a fun thing, right, but it
- 25:00Speaker 7: wasn't like it wasn't like a program. And I played
- 25:05Speaker 7: for the Burbank Golden Bears. I'm sort of going to
- 25:07Speaker 7: out some people here, but I don't care.
- 25:09Speaker 2: I love it.
- 25:10Speaker 7: Forty years old, do it. And so I played for
- 25:14Speaker 7: the Burbank Golden Bears. It's in Burbank, California, in a
- 25:18Speaker 7: place called Pickwick Arena. And we all had dads that
- 25:21Speaker 7: just like liked hockey. Like there was no one in
- 25:23Speaker 7: California coaching hockey who had any real hockey experience. Some
- 25:27Speaker 7: people did, some people didn't, you know there, but there
- 25:30Speaker 7: wasn't any.
- 25:30Speaker 6: Culture of it.
- 25:31Speaker 7: So the hockey dads who are from New York or Boston,
- 25:35Speaker 7: they'd coach the team, but they didn't really have any
- 25:37Speaker 7: like real hockey experience. One practice, this guy comes out.
- 25:41Speaker 6: My dad's there.
- 25:42Speaker 7: My dad was a professional baseball player. His dad was
- 25:44Speaker 7: a professional, but he understands sports. He doesn't understand hockey specifics,
- 25:48Speaker 7: but he understood sports and could recognize someone who was
- 25:51Speaker 7: a different This was a different level, right. A guy
- 25:54Speaker 7: comes out and he starts skating around.
- 25:56Speaker 6: He's like a coach.
- 25:57Speaker 7: He's probably thirty two thirty three at the time, and
- 26:00Speaker 7: it was like, could I swear?
- 26:03Speaker 2: Hell?
- 26:06Speaker 6: Is this guy?
- 26:07Speaker 7: Like it was like a different that nobody's seen it, right,
- 26:10Speaker 7: Like except the Kings when you went to go practice,
- 26:12Speaker 7: like look at Culver City they played, you were like
- 26:14Speaker 7: he saw those guys.
- 26:14Speaker 6: But this guy was like this was different. It was
- 26:16Speaker 6: a different, something different.
- 26:18Speaker 7: He was, you know, playing with us and skating around,
- 26:21Speaker 7: skating around everybody, and it was just like this guy,
- 26:22Speaker 7: no one even knew who he was, but he comes
- 26:24Speaker 7: off the ice of my dad bee lines for him
- 26:26Speaker 7: because I'm obsessed with hockey. I was ten years old
- 26:29Speaker 7: and my Dad's like, who are you?
- 26:31Speaker 6: What? Like, where are you from? No English?
- 26:34Speaker 7: So he set up a thing where three dudes, me,
- 26:37Speaker 7: another kid, Elliot, another kid Chris went to go like
- 26:40Speaker 7: practice with this guy in this shit whole rink in
- 26:43Speaker 7: Van e Is called Iceland, run by another guy who
- 26:47Speaker 7: I'm pretty sure was in the Russian mob because he
- 26:49Speaker 7: was One day showed up and his fingers were gone,
- 26:52Speaker 7: and it was like, howd.
- 26:52Speaker 6: All your fingers go away? Like where did your fingers go?
- 26:55Speaker 7: And he'd like had a glove and he had to
- 26:58Speaker 7: shake his hand and was like the glove fingers was
- 27:01Speaker 7: kind of like disappeared in your hand. You're like, wit,
- 27:02Speaker 7: he's like to stick my hand and bony, and you're
- 27:05Speaker 7: like that that seems insane. So these are the people
- 27:08Speaker 7: that we were dealing with, right, But my dad was like,
- 27:12Speaker 7: this is this is hockey.
- 27:14Speaker 6: It's not baseball, it's not football.
- 27:16Speaker 7: Is different, and if you want to play this, these
- 27:18Speaker 7: are the people who, like you're gonna come up against
- 27:21Speaker 7: if this is a sport you really want to end
- 27:22Speaker 7: up doing. It was good for me, good for a
- 27:24Speaker 7: kid from California who is like an affluent area. Anyway,
- 27:27Speaker 7: So Constantine comes and he starts in the first thing
- 27:30Speaker 7: that he does, he starts hacking my legs, and a
- 27:33Speaker 7: kid is shooting, and he starts shooting, and another kid
- 27:36Speaker 7: starts hacking my legs, and Constantine's like this dude's like
- 27:39Speaker 7: an ex professional hockey player in a real way. We
- 27:42Speaker 7: didn't know his story yet, and we had social services
- 27:47Speaker 7: called on us, and my dad had to talk to
- 27:49Speaker 7: the social services and be like, this isn't child abuse,
- 27:53Speaker 7: it's hockey.
- 27:54Speaker 3: It's hockey hockey.
- 27:57Speaker 7: And so my dad was like, this is awesome, Mike,
- 28:00Speaker 7: he's beating my kid up and I loved it because
- 28:03Speaker 7: it felt like hockey, if you know, this was like
- 28:05Speaker 7: the lore of what you were feeling.
- 28:07Speaker 6: I was drafted by des Moines.
- 28:09Speaker 7: Des Moines asked me to come and play in the Planet,
- 28:13Speaker 7: go to their camp, and my family advisor was like,
- 28:15Speaker 7: I think it's a good idea, and.
- 28:16Speaker 6: I was kind of like, I don't know.
- 28:17Speaker 7: I'm kind of nervous because Rock just went and it's
- 28:21Speaker 7: not a great look because I do I'm the goal
- 28:24Speaker 7: I want to be. I want to play here. But
- 28:27Speaker 7: I got talked into going. I went and played played
- 28:31Speaker 7: in the Des Moines camp without any desire to play there.
- 28:35Speaker 7: I come back because their camps before our camp, and
- 28:39Speaker 7: it was like, you know, kind of weird. I was like, no,
- 28:43Speaker 7: I'm playing here. I got a call from the coach.
- 28:45Speaker 7: I was the des Moines camp. It was good, but
- 28:47Speaker 7: I'm playing. I get cut that after camp politics, but
- 28:53Speaker 7: the cut was like congratulations, you know we're going to
- 28:57Speaker 7: release you.
- 28:57Speaker 6: You can go to des Moines.
- 28:58Speaker 7: Because I'm an American player, obviously you want to go
- 29:00Speaker 7: to the USHL. It's cool, like you don't have to, like,
- 29:04Speaker 7: you know, and I was like, I'm not going to
- 29:06Speaker 7: des Moines like I told them I'm not going. That
- 29:09Speaker 7: started like a fucked up journey for me, and so
- 29:14Speaker 7: I went to I ended up having nowhere to play
- 29:17Speaker 7: at that season, and it was like Surrey needed a
- 29:21Speaker 7: goalie and Quinnell needed a goalie and I was like,
- 29:23Speaker 7: I don't want to fuck it, like, oh my god,
- 29:25Speaker 7: what am I going to do? And then Chicago needed
- 29:26Speaker 7: a goalie and I was like, well, maybe I will
- 29:29Speaker 7: go to the USHL. I had a terrible time in Chicago.
- 29:32Speaker 7: It really fucked me up as an eighteen year old,
- 29:35Speaker 7: felt like nobody wanted you and how to deal with rejection.
- 29:38Speaker 6: Never had that happen.
- 29:40Speaker 7: I ended up leaving because it was a bad situation.
- 29:43Speaker 7: And I went to Toronto and I played in Brampton
- 29:46Speaker 7: in the OPGHL and they're like, you know, they have
- 29:49Speaker 7: those like divisions and Talbot was playing for Hamilton. I
- 29:53Speaker 7: was playing for Brampton and I had the world's fucking
- 29:56Speaker 7: greatest time. We went, We played great the team.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Do you ever expect Talbot to be a you know,
- 30:03Speaker 3: guy playing over f hundred games in the NHL at
- 30:05Speaker 3: that point or is it you know, were you just
- 30:07Speaker 3: you're not even thinking of that?
- 30:09Speaker 6: You never fucking everybody's trying to do the same thing.
- 30:11Speaker 7: You don't know, you know, and you at that time,
- 30:13Speaker 7: you know, you kind of got your head head in
- 30:15Speaker 7: the clouds a little bit where you're like, you know,
- 30:17Speaker 7: this guy's going there, and Cody google Bath is going there,
- 30:20Speaker 7: and this guy's you know, you're like prying yourselves against everybody.
- 30:25Speaker 6: Holy Cross recruited me.
- 30:28Speaker 7: I had, uh, Clarkson was was the team that really
- 30:34Speaker 7: wanted to go. I really want to go to Clarkson.
- 30:36Speaker 7: Had fucking horrible game when the Clarkson scout came twice,
- 30:39Speaker 7: and it was like nervous in my head. Bad game, No,
- 30:45Speaker 7: not going to Clarkson. And then I had a couple
- 30:49Speaker 7: like difficult situations with my like my parents being who
- 30:53Speaker 7: they were. Harvard was was a team that, like the
- 30:59Speaker 7: assistant coach had come and been. I had good grades
- 31:02Speaker 7: and you know, I was smart enough, and so it
- 31:06Speaker 7: fit like Harvard was a good fit and I was
- 31:09Speaker 7: playing with one.
- 31:09Speaker 6: I played really well. When they came.
- 31:11Speaker 7: The head coach at the time didn't want a distraction
- 31:15Speaker 7: on on the team. There's already enough distractions with going
- 31:18Speaker 7: to Harvard. And that was the reason that I was
- 31:20Speaker 7: given that, like we're you gonna go with somebody else
- 31:23Speaker 7: because we don't want that. And I'm like, I'm the
- 31:25Speaker 7: nicest guy, Like I'm put my head down and just
- 31:27Speaker 7: go to work. It's all I've ever had to do,
- 31:29Speaker 7: Like you had to fight that. I had to fight
- 31:31Speaker 7: that my whole life in hockey. It's specifically it's a
- 31:33Speaker 7: blue collar Canadian sport. For Russell Goldiehan's kid coming in
- 31:36Speaker 7: to do anything is like the fuck is this guy
- 31:39Speaker 7: a clown? Like from then you had to like play,
- 31:41Speaker 7: you know, head down for three weeks and then really, no,
- 31:44Speaker 7: he's winning games and they've done pretty good and he's
- 31:46Speaker 7: pretty good, you know, and and then like you know,
- 31:49Speaker 7: you're always you're always constantly I was fighting that, which
- 31:52Speaker 7: is guy part of my choice. I liked fighting it
- 31:55Speaker 7: because it was something that, like I said, gave me
- 31:58Speaker 7: value self worth as a person because I could do that,
- 32:02Speaker 7: fight against it and prove to myself and other people
- 32:06Speaker 7: that like, no, I'm doing.
- 32:07Speaker 6: This on my own.
- 32:08Speaker 7: There's no way that my parents can help me stop
- 32:11Speaker 7: goals going in the net, Like it's not a thing
- 32:13Speaker 7: they can help with. So I liked it, but it
- 32:17Speaker 7: also did have like a negative effect sometimes on getting
- 32:22Speaker 7: in the way of things that I'd like to do.
- 32:24Speaker 7: I just wanted to disappear and like stop the puck.
- 32:27Speaker 7: That was it, and like that. You couldn't quite do that,
- 32:29Speaker 7: you know. I had to come to terms with that
- 32:32Speaker 7: figure out how.
- 32:32Speaker 6: To do that anyway.
- 32:34Speaker 7: So it came down to Alabama and they recruited me,
- 32:37Speaker 7: and they didn't have a starting goalie, so they recruited
- 32:40Speaker 7: me and Cam, and I was gonna have the opportunity
- 32:43Speaker 7: to fight for a starting job and I just wanted
- 32:46Speaker 7: to fucking play, and so that was the best opportunity
- 32:49Speaker 7: for me to play. And I knew Cam. We had
- 32:52Speaker 7: played against each other in junior. We were always battling
- 32:56Speaker 7: it out for like, you know, like who the better
- 32:58Speaker 7: numbers in the league or whatever for the two years
- 33:00Speaker 7: that I played there. But I went into camp and
- 33:03Speaker 7: I got run off the road by car while I
- 33:05Speaker 7: was running. I was training in the off season in Muskoka,
- 33:11Speaker 7: and a car came around with a bunch of fucking
- 33:13Speaker 7: drunk kids and they ran.
- 33:14Speaker 6: Me off the road.
- 33:17Speaker 7: Yeah off, and I busted my ankle. So I got
- 33:20Speaker 7: into camp with a boot on. That was having fun,
- 33:24Speaker 7: you know. I was like I'm here, you know, I'm like,
- 33:26Speaker 7: you know, rehab my ankles. That had it on for
- 33:28Speaker 7: like a month and a half, two months, And it
- 33:30Speaker 7: was just at that point I started to be like,
- 33:34Speaker 7: is this something that I want to pursue. Continue pursuing,
- 33:39Speaker 7: Like you have to to achieve your dreams. So that
- 33:43Speaker 7: was the beginning of the end, but also the beginning
- 33:46Speaker 7: of like the greatest time of my life. Because then
- 33:49Speaker 7: about two in my sophomore year, I'd made great friends
- 33:53Speaker 7: like Ryan Brokeholder and Cam was a great friend. And
- 33:55Speaker 7: I was never competitive with Cam. You didn't have a
- 33:59Speaker 7: great season the first season we played, and it was
- 34:03Speaker 7: probably one of the better things that ever happened to
- 34:04Speaker 7: him because he he had to fight for it, you know.
- 34:07Speaker 7: And then he had an insane uh CHA tournament.
- 34:12Speaker 6: We were in the CHA at the time.
- 34:14Speaker 7: I had left, but he had a like he like
- 34:16Speaker 7: got like a shut out every game, and that's what
- 34:18Speaker 7: like put him on the map. Rangers signed him because
- 34:20Speaker 7: he's undrafted free agent, and like he just took off
- 34:25Speaker 7: from there. And and Cam was always really good at
- 34:27Speaker 7: using his size. He just was, you know, had a
- 34:32Speaker 7: level head and he was, you know, a dependable person.
- 34:37Speaker 7: So you know those things. I think like it all
- 34:40Speaker 7: really lined up for Cam in the right way. But
- 34:42Speaker 7: he was a big dude who knew how to use
- 34:43Speaker 7: his size, and I was smaller and I'm only six
- 34:47Speaker 7: feet six one, and I wasn't the most talented. I
- 34:50Speaker 7: could think my way around the game well, like I
- 34:53Speaker 7: could manage a game well, you know. I knew when
- 34:55Speaker 7: to move the pucker, knew when to freeze the puck.
- 34:57Speaker 7: I knew how to talk. I knew how to talk.
- 34:58Speaker 7: I knew how to be a good leader. I knew
- 35:00Speaker 7: how to like be those types of things I was
- 35:02Speaker 7: good at. But I wasn't like the most talented goalie,
- 35:06Speaker 7: like you know on Planet Earth. I always knew how
- 35:08Speaker 7: to like kind of fight my way up to make
- 35:10Speaker 7: it work. It just got to the point where I
- 35:12Speaker 7: was like, God, it a hard fight to continue when
- 35:17Speaker 7: you start looking into the crystal ball and being like,
- 35:18Speaker 7: do I want to play in Peoria when I'm twenty nine?
- 35:20Speaker 3: Like is that r Yeah, those questions.
- 35:23Speaker 4: The rumor is is you broke a lot of hearts
- 35:26Speaker 4: over in Netherlands, in Germany from our mutual friend there.
- 35:29Speaker 4: Why that's that's the rumor. After Alabama Huntsville. A lot
- 35:33Speaker 4: of broken hearts over there, but I have I have
- 35:36Speaker 4: to oh, yeah, we're talking about Pete cart right, a
- 35:40Speaker 4: lot of broken hearts over there. But I got to
- 35:42Speaker 4: ask though, like, you know, obviously you know your dad,
- 35:47Speaker 4: and you said he played professional sports or he played
- 35:50Speaker 4: professional baseball obviously big time a list actor.
- 35:54Speaker 2: You know, how did you lean on your dad?
- 35:57Speaker 4: I guess you know, because you're playing, you're playing pro
- 35:59Speaker 4: hockey and then you transition to acting. You know, how
- 36:02Speaker 4: much did you you know, talk to your dad and
- 36:04Speaker 4: and you know, take his advice through all.
- 36:06Speaker 7: This sports much much more with sports, because because there's
- 36:15Speaker 7: a thing, you know, there's a link between people's kids
- 36:19Speaker 7: who've played professional sports and their their children their fathers
- 36:23Speaker 7: who played professional or mothers who played professional sports. And
- 36:28Speaker 7: so that to me was like really really, this like
- 36:33Speaker 7: unbelievably important relationship that I had with my dad because
- 36:39Speaker 7: he knew how to talk to me when things were bad, like,
- 36:43Speaker 7: you know, when things weren't going well as a as
- 36:45Speaker 7: a sports psychologist almost you know, and he knew when
- 36:48Speaker 7: to push me when I wasn't. He could recognize when
- 36:51Speaker 7: you're not working hard, He can recognize when you're not
- 36:55Speaker 7: like putting yourself into the program. He could recognize when
- 36:59Speaker 7: we went to Vancouver, what kind of coach and what
- 37:02Speaker 7: kind of mentality you need to be to play this position.
- 37:06Speaker 7: Like he didn't know how to play the position, but
- 37:08Speaker 7: he knew, like when you step into the battle's box
- 37:11Speaker 7: in baseball, it's a very specific place, and your brain
- 37:15Speaker 7: is going to all of these different places, and like
- 37:17Speaker 7: you have to be able to practice perfect and then
- 37:19Speaker 7: let it go. And sometimes you get caught in these
- 37:22Speaker 7: cycles as an athlete that if you can't get out of,
- 37:26Speaker 7: you'll find the door out. And if you don't have
- 37:28Speaker 7: a parent who understands how to like show you the
- 37:31Speaker 7: other doors in the room that are possible like you have,
- 37:35Speaker 7: it's harder. And so with my dad, he understood what
- 37:40Speaker 7: professional sports and being a professional athlete gave him. My
- 37:43Speaker 7: dad was much more talented to baseball than I was
- 37:45Speaker 7: at hockey, and I was much more talented at baseball
- 37:47Speaker 7: than I was a hockey. But it gave me a
- 37:49Speaker 7: sense of self worth that it was like separate from
- 37:52Speaker 7: the identity of my father, and he understood those elements
- 37:55Speaker 7: of it. So when he was when I was twelve
- 37:57Speaker 7: or sitting in his car outside that shitty ice drink
- 37:59Speaker 7: and he was like, Okay, do you want to do
- 38:01Speaker 7: this is something you want to do? And I was
- 38:02Speaker 7: like yes, unequivocally yes. So I had to move. I
- 38:06Speaker 7: was still living in LA. But then we started to
- 38:08Speaker 7: look at like where would we move?
- 38:10Speaker 6: Where would you go?
- 38:11Speaker 7: Would you go to a boarding school, did you go
- 38:13Speaker 7: to you know, play a junior hockey? Would you play
- 38:17Speaker 7: there's this WHL league that like you get drafted and
- 38:19Speaker 7: that I got drafted by the Prince George Cougars when
- 38:22Speaker 7: I was fourteen. I went to their camp, had a
- 38:25Speaker 7: great camp, but had to make then the decision of
- 38:28Speaker 7: like is this the track you want to go?
- 38:30Speaker 6: Because you couldn't play?
- 38:31Speaker 7: You play one second of an exhibition game in your
- 38:34Speaker 7: toast for NCAA.
- 38:36Speaker 3: I wanted to ask you something quick about your dad
- 38:39Speaker 3: and miracle on ice and you know, for you do
- 38:44Speaker 3: you remember that time and like that because you talk
- 38:46Speaker 3: about like you talked about early on, how you know
- 38:50Speaker 3: you have your team winning the Pee Week tournament. That
- 38:54Speaker 3: kind of gives a spark to LA as much as
- 38:56Speaker 3: you know Gretzki and and there's so many little moments
- 38:59Speaker 3: in LA but in the US in general that you know,
- 39:03Speaker 3: these hockey iconic movie just introduced new fans America on
- 39:06Speaker 3: ice has won that did you did? He kind of
- 39:08Speaker 3: lean on his knowledge of seeing you and and and
- 39:11Speaker 3: any good stories you have from that time.
- 39:13Speaker 7: Yeah, So they wanted me to play young Herb and
- 39:17Speaker 7: I was like, well, I can you know not doing that.
- 39:19Speaker 7: I was in Vancouver playing junior hockey. Yeah, they were
- 39:23Speaker 7: filming at the same time we were shooting. So like
- 39:26Speaker 7: we'd go play in Abbotsford and that was one of
- 39:28Speaker 7: the rinks they used. And in Abbotsford they would shoot
- 39:32Speaker 7: after we'd play. So we'd play Abbotsford and then the
- 39:37Speaker 7: like all of the crew where they're watching the game.
- 39:39Speaker 7: So we'd have like, you know, three hundred fans that
- 39:41Speaker 7: weren't you know, they're they're they're the crew, but they
- 39:45Speaker 7: would come on after we would play. So my dad
- 39:47Speaker 7: was there to go to work after I'd play my game,
- 39:51Speaker 7: which was hysterical and funny for everybody. So Gavin O'Connor, uh,
- 39:57Speaker 7: the director, like didn't you know he wasn't a hockey player.
- 40:00Speaker 6: He was a football player. And my dad was like,
- 40:03Speaker 6: why don't you go to why practices?
- 40:05Speaker 7: You can go in the locker room, see what the
- 40:08Speaker 7: locker rooms like, practice through the locker rooms, like during
- 40:12Speaker 7: a game, go sneak in the corner and like listen to,
- 40:15Speaker 7: you know, the speeches the coach gives, see how the
- 40:17Speaker 7: players interact.
- 40:20Speaker 6: You know, it was a bunch of like sixteen to
- 40:22Speaker 6: twenty one year.
- 40:23Speaker 7: Old dudes age and all of these players, you know,
- 40:27Speaker 7: some of the younger guys were dudes who were like
- 40:30Speaker 7: gonna go. Carl Alsner played on my team. We had
- 40:33Speaker 7: a bunch, We had a few NHL Future NHL ors,
- 40:36Speaker 7: Race Awata, rest.
- 40:37Speaker 6: In piece Rey, and they.
- 40:41Speaker 7: Were going over stuff and it just wasn't working. Like
- 40:44Speaker 7: Gavin was like, it feels staged. It feel doesn't feel real.
- 40:46Speaker 7: Come on, get into it. My dad was like, fuck
- 40:49Speaker 7: it stop, we're playing a game. We're just gonna play
- 40:53Speaker 7: and I'm coaching this team, and this guy's coaching this team,
- 40:56Speaker 7: and a steak dinner is on the line or whatever
- 40:59Speaker 7: they put on the line. My dad may have even
- 41:00Speaker 7: put money on the line, I'm not sure. And they
- 41:04Speaker 7: better like five hundred bucks a dude or whatever whoever wins,
- 41:08Speaker 7: and all of a sudden it turned into a hockey game,
- 41:10Speaker 7: there were fights, there were like things going. It started
- 41:14Speaker 7: to feel real. And then they do set up plays
- 41:16Speaker 7: like that that were like goals that happened. They needed
- 41:20Speaker 7: to look like the goal that happened, like the Eruzioni
- 41:23Speaker 7: famous goal where like runs on the ice like that
- 41:26Speaker 7: was a very set up play. But they were able
- 41:27Speaker 7: to fill out the rest with like a real hockey
- 41:31Speaker 7: game and with real hockey players, and they just shot
- 41:34Speaker 7: it and like it became that's why that movie feels real.
- 41:39Speaker 7: And so they they they used what they had and
- 41:42Speaker 7: like it really was interesting.
- 41:44Speaker 6: But yeah, they didn't. They wanted me to like to play,
- 41:47Speaker 6: you know, one of the other goalies, and I was like,
- 41:51Speaker 6: I'm not doing it, you know, like this isn't what
- 41:53Speaker 6: I'm doing.
- 41:53Speaker 7: I'm glad that everybody's having a good time, and but
- 41:57Speaker 7: like I was sixteen years old, seventeen years old and
- 41:59Speaker 7: trying to make my life in hockey like that was
- 42:02Speaker 7: not going to obviously help. So but there was a
- 42:06Speaker 7: lot of interesting good stories from that. It was very
- 42:09Speaker 7: good for my dad, I think, a very good time
- 42:12Speaker 7: and he's just said recently in interviews his dad died,
- 42:16Speaker 7: my grandfather died being during filming and they came up
- 42:21Speaker 7: to him.
- 42:21Speaker 6: The ad skated up to him and he knew because
- 42:24Speaker 6: his dad was sick, and he was.
- 42:26Speaker 7: Like, my dad died, right, And he's like yeah, he's like,
- 42:29Speaker 7: give me five minutes. They thought they were gonna like
- 42:30Speaker 7: shut down filming.
- 42:32Speaker 6: You know, my dad was going to go home. And
- 42:33Speaker 6: I was like, no, it's give me five minutes.
- 42:35Speaker 7: And he skated around and he realized in that moment,
- 42:37Speaker 7: he said that like, oh, I'm playing my dad, like
- 42:41Speaker 7: I'm playing Bang.
- 42:42Speaker 6: Wow, I'm playing her Brooks.
- 42:45Speaker 7: I'm playing bang because that was my that was my
- 42:47Speaker 7: grandfather with baseball, and so he was able to translate
- 42:51Speaker 7: what baning was for players and specifically that type of
- 42:55Speaker 7: player and bringing a team together, making them believe in
- 42:58Speaker 7: themselves beyond just who they were as a hockey player,
- 43:01Speaker 7: and bringing themselves to the game and all the shit
- 43:05Speaker 7: good coaches do and uh. And that was a moment
- 43:09Speaker 7: for him that he really realized, like, oh, I'm playing
- 43:11Speaker 7: my dad.
- 43:12Speaker 4: That's that's really profound and and well, that's that's an
- 43:16Speaker 4: incredible story and.
- 43:18Speaker 3: A tear to my end. I know, right right, this
- 43:21Speaker 3: went back bring it to comedy.
- 43:25Speaker 2: I want to go back to.
- 43:26Speaker 4: This is forty because I remember This is forty and
- 43:29Speaker 4: a buddy of mine from Anchored Alaska, Matt Carl was
- 43:33Speaker 4: playing for the Flyer.
- 43:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's telling me. He's like, hey, I'm gonna
- 43:36Speaker 2: be in this movie. This is forty.
- 43:37Speaker 4: We're shooting done, and there's other players like James Enreensdyke's Mardinal,
- 43:42Speaker 4: you know, And that's where I really I'm like, hey,
- 43:44Speaker 4: I know that guy.
- 43:45Speaker 2: That guy looks at me. It looks like why Russell,
- 43:46Speaker 2: I remember seeing you.
- 43:47Speaker 4: But let's let's go to you know, you get into
- 43:49Speaker 4: goon too, and you know you put the pads back on,
- 43:52Speaker 4: and how did that feel being a goon too? Being
- 43:55Speaker 4: in that role and being a hockey player.
- 43:57Speaker 6: Again, so very interesting.
- 44:00Speaker 7: I went to for the list is forty piece, I
- 44:03Speaker 7: went and did an audition. You know, you're auditioning now
- 44:06Speaker 7: I'm now now I'm an actor. Having a hard time
- 44:08Speaker 7: making the transition. My agent was always like, you're like
- 44:11Speaker 7: happy Gilmour. I go into agent, go into auditions and
- 44:13Speaker 7: be like, Hi, I'm here for the audition, but I'm
- 44:15Speaker 7: actually a hockey player.
- 44:16Speaker 6: Like you can't get.
- 44:17Speaker 7: Rid of it, Like doesn't happen overnight? You know, like
- 44:20Speaker 7: it's time and and there was an audition for a
- 44:23Speaker 7: jud Apatow movie and I was like, okay, like cool,
- 44:26Speaker 7: you know what's the character.
- 44:27Speaker 6: Well, he's a hockey player.
- 44:28Speaker 2: I was like, okay, this is I got it.
- 44:32Speaker 1: I could do it.
- 44:34Speaker 7: Confidence is through the roof and you get like you
- 44:37Speaker 7: get sides, you get like a page and a half
- 44:39Speaker 7: to read, you memorize your lines.
- 44:41Speaker 6: I go in and I do it. It's with his
- 44:42Speaker 6: wife too, so like you know, it's a little added pressure.
- 44:45Speaker 7: But I'm like I got this. And then he goes, okay, great,
- 44:48Speaker 7: Like I do the lines and he's like, now just
- 44:51Speaker 7: ad lib and I'm like I don't know how to
- 44:55Speaker 7: do that. Like I didn't go to like acting school,
- 44:58Speaker 7: you know, I was a hockey player six months ago.
- 45:00Speaker 7: And now I'm in this room and I'm totally intimidated
- 45:03Speaker 7: because you're ma.
- 45:04Speaker 6: And he's like, no, no, no.
- 45:05Speaker 7: Just like you know, talk about like hockey, and I
- 45:08Speaker 7: was like okay. And so I started talking about hockey,
- 45:11Speaker 7: and it weirdly got to like the summer where I
- 45:15Speaker 7: was like, yeah, we go to the lake, like you know,
- 45:18Speaker 7: like talked about like my summer as hot, and it
- 45:20Speaker 7: really worked. It was like, oh, okay, this is easy
- 45:22Speaker 7: for me. I got the job and when I showed up.
- 45:25Speaker 7: I was always very nervous when I was on a
- 45:27Speaker 7: movie set because I felt out of place because I
- 45:29Speaker 7: had just been fucking playing hockey a year ago, and
- 45:33Speaker 7: it was like, this was so antithetical to what I'm
- 45:36Speaker 7: doing now, but I do love it and I want
- 45:38Speaker 7: to make it. And these guys show up, Matt Carl,
- 45:40Speaker 7: James Van, He's like e La Perrier, Scot Heart and
- 45:42Speaker 7: all and and those guys were way more me than
- 45:48Speaker 7: anybody that I had worked with up to that point.
- 45:51Speaker 7: They were like, oh fuck, okay, like you guys are
- 45:55Speaker 7: I know you? This is easy And so that was
- 45:59Speaker 7: really comfortable, and I became really comfortable very quickly because
- 46:03Speaker 7: I was with like friends. Ends then when Goon Too
- 46:06Speaker 7: came along, I had really that had been some time,
- 46:09Speaker 7: and I had pushed away hockey because.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Of a lot of great hockey players.
- 46:13Speaker 7: In that a lot some fucking like and it was
- 46:17Speaker 7: and it was so goon Too. We shot in Barry
- 46:22Speaker 7: and we shot at the arena at the Colts Arena, and.
- 46:25Speaker 6: I show up on the bus.
- 46:27Speaker 7: There's like a bus scene and I show up on
- 46:29Speaker 7: the bus and I like sit down on my like
- 46:30Speaker 7: seat in my mark and I look around on it.
- 46:33Speaker 7: There's other dudes on the team who are filling out
- 46:35Speaker 7: the team that aren't the main actors. And I'm like, Dylan,
- 46:38Speaker 7: like I played hockey with you, and you and you
- 46:40Speaker 7: and you was like all these other hockey players that
- 46:41Speaker 7: had played with and I was like.
- 46:42Speaker 2: What the fuck are you guys?
- 46:43Speaker 6: We're in the movie.
- 46:45Speaker 7: And that part of that movie was like so fun
- 46:48Speaker 7: for me, just because I got to go back and
- 46:50Speaker 7: do it again.
- 46:51Speaker 6: It's not something that like you try not to. I
- 46:53Speaker 6: don't want to be one of those people.
- 46:54Speaker 7: Never want to be one of these people that like
- 46:56Speaker 7: I was I should have been this, or I was
- 46:59Speaker 7: really good or like you know, I'm like, no, I
- 47:01Speaker 7: wasn't that good. I would you know you're that good?
- 47:04Speaker 7: Play like you know? And so I tried. I was
- 47:07Speaker 7: in the process of like shedding that part of my
- 47:09Speaker 7: life and just being able to be like enjoy being
- 47:13Speaker 7: a fan again and enjoy enjoy the enjoy the game
- 47:15Speaker 7: in a different way. And so but it was a
- 47:18Speaker 7: lot of fun to go out and just like play
- 47:20Speaker 7: shinny at lunch, Like it was so fun you know.
- 47:25Speaker 3: I mean it's you talk about those moments, and I
- 47:27Speaker 3: guess that probably helped you transition in acting, is having
- 47:30Speaker 3: those roles of playing athletes. You mean, you play a
- 47:32Speaker 3: football player, baseball player, hockey player. But I you know,
- 47:36Speaker 3: I'm I. I couldn't have you on without I geek
- 47:38Speaker 3: out on Marvel. Then you know, you playing John Walker
- 47:42Speaker 3: and in that role, to me is such an underrated
- 47:46Speaker 3: role in the cinematic universe because it is like the
- 47:49Speaker 3: duality of of you know, the good guy, what's a
- 47:53Speaker 3: good guy that's actually a bad guy, that kind of
- 47:55Speaker 3: you know, you talk about the antithetical side of things.
- 47:58Speaker 3: So how was that for you? Like, because John Walker
- 48:00Speaker 3: is kind of like a misunderstood enforcer that's just not liked.
- 48:05Speaker 3: And I kind of tie it back into hockey, like
- 48:06Speaker 3: how was that for you playing that? And and and
- 48:10Speaker 3: was there any parallels for you between that and hockey?
- 48:13Speaker 7: So when I got the part, and I've said this
- 48:16Speaker 7: a few times now, like they they they showed me
- 48:19Speaker 7: that you don't you don't know what you're auditioning for.
- 48:20Speaker 7: They showed me a picture. They brought me to the
- 48:23Speaker 7: office and we're like, this is who you're playing? And
- 48:25Speaker 7: it's it was Captain America like in his suit, and
- 48:29Speaker 7: I was like it was my joke because I was
- 48:31Speaker 7: a kid on Christmas who like didn't want the president.
- 48:33Speaker 6: I was like thanks, Like I don't.
- 48:35Speaker 7: Want to play cat, Like that's a fucking death sentence,
- 48:38Speaker 7: Like I don't want to do that. They're like, oh no,
- 48:40Speaker 7: it's this other character. He turns into US agent. He's
- 48:43Speaker 7: like a bad guy bizarre world time. And I was like, okay,
- 48:45Speaker 7: that's interesting, Like there's like an interesting take there. And
- 48:50Speaker 7: we had I had a guy with this person will
- 48:52Speaker 7: remain unnamed. I had a person on my team who
- 48:54Speaker 7: is really good, but everybody fucking hated him, and like
- 48:59Speaker 7: but that you had to play with him, you know,
- 49:01Speaker 7: like there's you have no choice, Like if he gets
- 49:03Speaker 7: into a fight, like you're getting into a fight, you know,
- 49:05Speaker 7: you go to a bar and he strews shut up,
- 49:08Speaker 7: like you're there and you're gonna be there because he's
- 49:11Speaker 7: on your team.
- 49:11Speaker 6: It's that thing. It's not not healthy, but it's like
- 49:14Speaker 6: what it breeds.
- 49:16Speaker 7: And I kind of thought of him because he was
- 49:19Speaker 7: actually like very insecure.
- 49:21Speaker 6: That was his thing.
- 49:22Speaker 7: He was good hockey player, but insecure, like so insecure,
- 49:28Speaker 7: and you kind of I always spent a lot of
- 49:30Speaker 7: time being like you're awesome, You're a great hockey player, great,
- 49:33Speaker 7: but you just always default to like dick and you're like,
- 49:37Speaker 7: why are you why do you have to be such
- 49:38Speaker 7: a dick? Like you're good and you're actually like a
- 49:41Speaker 7: sweet person on the inside when you get to know you,
- 49:44Speaker 7: but then like you just turn into a dick. And
- 49:47Speaker 7: so I thought of him a lot when when I
- 49:51Speaker 7: was playing, because he was kind of John. He'd fight,
- 49:56Speaker 7: he was a good fighter, like he could mix it up.
- 50:00Speaker 7: You kind of loved having on your team. He kind
- 50:01Speaker 7: of needed him on your team, but you also kind
- 50:03Speaker 7: of hated him when you know sometimes off the ice,
- 50:07Speaker 7: where it was like you don't have to be a
- 50:09Speaker 7: fucking dick. You can just like you know, go do
- 50:11Speaker 7: be a dick on the ice and then be cool off.
- 50:14Speaker 7: And like, so I did take that guy and put
- 50:17Speaker 7: him into that character as an and try and play
- 50:20Speaker 7: the misunderstood element of him, and added a lot to
- 50:23Speaker 7: that in the first show of like this person's a
- 50:26Speaker 7: misunderstood person because he's very good at his job and
- 50:28Speaker 7: he's been trained to do this, but he's not been
- 50:30Speaker 7: mentally he's not mentally fit to be the captain of
- 50:34Speaker 7: the team.
- 50:35Speaker 4: You're sorry to cut out your latest monarch. You're playing
- 50:39Speaker 4: a version of your of your father. Yeah, what has
- 50:42Speaker 4: that been like with your like working with.
- 50:46Speaker 3: To bury him? Eh?
- 50:47Speaker 6: Yeah, it was, it was. It was.
- 50:49Speaker 7: I was so nervous because we very intentionally not work together,
- 50:54Speaker 7: you know, like it was like, this is you, this
- 50:57Speaker 7: is me, and like we'll do our own things. And
- 50:59Speaker 7: then this came along and I was like, that was
- 51:01Speaker 7: It's a good idea, you know, it's a really good
- 51:03Speaker 7: casting idea, Like can we make them show as good
- 51:06Speaker 7: as the casting idea can be? And it was great
- 51:11Speaker 7: to work with, Like we never talked about movies, you know,
- 51:14Speaker 7: and it was really cool because we both actually work
- 51:17Speaker 7: very similarly, you know, only we have differences too, but
- 51:21Speaker 7: for the most part where we see things quite similarly
- 51:24Speaker 7: and never have really talked about it.
- 51:26Speaker 3: Well, you guys have such a great athletic background. I mean,
- 51:30Speaker 3: your movie career has been amazing to watch. I mean,
- 51:33Speaker 3: this has been so much fun to chat with you.
- 51:35Speaker 3: But before we leave you, I want to ask you
- 51:37Speaker 3: quickly talk about Lake how or you rep in the
- 51:40Speaker 3: merch give us a quick one. I like the swag
- 51:43Speaker 3: right now, and I'm expecting a lot of this swag
- 51:46Speaker 3: after you tell us a little bit about Lake hou.
- 51:49Speaker 6: Nate tried it in Colorado at the event.
- 51:51Speaker 7: It's like, so, my my good close friend. His wife
- 51:57Speaker 7: is my wife's best friend. Rich he's a producer. We
- 51:59Speaker 7: got on a family vacation. He grew up in Geneseos
- 52:04Speaker 7: from New York and he grew up on a lake.
- 52:08Speaker 7: I grew up going to Lake Rosso and Canada. So
- 52:11Speaker 7: we went to Canada. For your viewers who don't know,
- 52:15Speaker 7: two hours north of Canada, it's this a place called Muscoca. Yeah,
- 52:18Speaker 7: we had friends there and it's it's magic. It's magical area.
- 52:22Speaker 7: Every hockey player and planet Earth now who like signed
- 52:25Speaker 7: a new contract like buyactly in Muscoca and uh, like
- 52:30Speaker 7: the Lyndrosses were there, and like everybody had a fucking
- 52:32Speaker 7: cottage and now really everybody has a cottage on I
- 52:35Speaker 7: think McDavid has one.
- 52:36Speaker 6: I'm sure Boston Matthews, everybody's got one.
- 52:39Speaker 3: They all do. Yeah, I mean there's yeah.
- 52:41Speaker 7: They've all got cottages because and now they have a
- 52:44Speaker 7: really good situation for playing and practicing in the off season.
- 52:47Speaker 7: In Muscoca where like I'd go then you always need
- 52:49Speaker 7: a goalie, you know. So it was like Chelios was
- 52:51Speaker 7: out and Jason Arnott came out and those dudes who
- 52:55Speaker 7: had cottages were practicing, and it was a little different
- 52:58Speaker 7: back then. That was twenty five years ago, so like
- 53:00Speaker 7: you know, the training regiment was was a little different
- 53:03Speaker 7: for those guys than are probabably is now for like
- 53:05Speaker 7: McDavid what he's doing in the off season. But anyway,
- 53:09Speaker 7: we went up there every year and every good thing
- 53:11Speaker 7: that like ever happened.
- 53:12Speaker 6: To me as like a young adult, like it happened
- 53:15Speaker 6: fucking there, like.
- 53:15Speaker 7: It's the lake. It was just like it was the best.
- 53:18Speaker 7: It's so everybody's got a lake story.
- 53:20Speaker 6: It's time stops. It's just the group. It's just it's
- 53:24Speaker 6: a unique.
- 53:26Speaker 7: Geographical place where like have a campfire, you drop everything
- 53:30Speaker 7: and you're like with people present. It was the best.
- 53:33Speaker 7: We connected over that and we were like nothing's like
- 53:35Speaker 7: branded around lakes and we were drinking high noon, which
- 53:39Speaker 7: was fine, but it wasn't like for us, it was like.
- 53:41Speaker 6: A little sugary. It had that like aftertastem like.
- 53:43Speaker 7: It's kind of be like a beer replacement, like something
- 53:46Speaker 7: that I can hold and drink and like drink three
- 53:49Speaker 7: or four of and not get tired of because it's
- 53:51Speaker 7: so much sugar. And so we were like, well they're drunk.
- 53:54Speaker 7: We're like, let's start up. Let's start our own company.
- 53:56Speaker 7: He calls me a month later and he's like, do
- 53:58Speaker 7: you want to do this? And I was like, fuck, yeah,
- 54:00Speaker 7: let's do it. Like I don't know any about the
- 54:01Speaker 7: drinks industry, neither do you. Like, let's go find out.
- 54:04Speaker 7: In November early November, we tech you know, he's he's
- 54:10Speaker 7: a buffalo guy. So he's like sabers Bill's Mafia, like
- 54:14Speaker 7: a season ticket holder.
- 54:16Speaker 6: And and I've got gone.
- 54:18Speaker 7: Up there a lot, and like those the Western New
- 54:20Speaker 7: York is, there's a specific specificity about Western New York.
- 54:23Speaker 6: They're so proud of their sports teams.
- 54:24Speaker 7: They're very like proud people loyal, and it reminded me
- 54:28Speaker 7: a lot of Canadians and where I spent most of
- 54:31Speaker 7: my young adult life, and so it made me feel
- 54:33Speaker 7: like very at home. And I was like, oh, these
- 54:34Speaker 7: are these people. I connect more to these people than
- 54:36Speaker 7: I do, Like it's somebody in La and so I
- 54:41Speaker 7: I've been I was texting, and I was like, they
- 54:43Speaker 7: were talking about the Sabers and the Savers were fucking
- 54:45Speaker 7: terrible again in the beginning of the season, and I
- 54:47Speaker 7: was like, if the fucking Sabers make the playoffs, I'll
- 54:50Speaker 7: jump in lake I'll slam a Lake hour from a
- 54:53Speaker 7: beer saber and jump in Lake Erie. Done cut to
- 54:57Speaker 7: like the greatest run in Hottree. So April eighteenth, I
- 55:05Speaker 7: am going to be going to Buffalo, flying from my
- 55:08Speaker 7: home to Buffalo to fifth because I'm a man of
- 55:10Speaker 7: my word and I'm gonna like, we're like gonna get
- 55:13Speaker 7: the Buffalo News and whatever and be like I'm gonna
- 55:15Speaker 7: fucking lead the charge into Lake Erie. It's thirty four
- 55:18Speaker 7: degrees right now, and I'm gonna spend fifteen seconds, one
- 55:22Speaker 7: second for every year the Buffalo didn't make the playoffs
- 55:25Speaker 7: and one one second for good luck, and i will
- 55:28Speaker 7: lead the charge into Lake Erie and keep my word
- 55:31Speaker 7: and it is I am.
- 55:32Speaker 6: I'm nervous, dude.
- 55:34Speaker 3: What clip that? What a way to end the show?
- 55:38Speaker 3: White Russell is jumping into the fucking lake. I'll be
- 55:43Speaker 3: the Buffalo Sabers fanned up. You better drink, you better
- 55:46Speaker 3: chuck that out of the saber. They got those sabers.
- 55:50Speaker 6: We're gonna get the beer Sabers, the Lake Hour Sabers,
- 55:53Speaker 6: whatever the fuck you want to call it. I'm gonna
- 55:55Speaker 6: see We're gonna jump into Lake Erie.
- 55:58Speaker 3: Well, Why Russell, thank you so much. I appreciate it.
- 56:02Speaker 3: And we're gonna see in Buffalo and Chippewas.
- 56:04Speaker 7: Yep, you will, naked running down with icycles hanging out
- 56:08Speaker 7: on my ass.
- 56:20Speaker 1: Great stuff once again from Why Russell. A huge fan
- 56:23Speaker 1: of Nathan, as you can tell now, a huge fan
- 56:24Speaker 1: of j D's. He's got stories for days. So once again,
- 56:26Speaker 1: thanks to him for joining us and making the time
- 56:28Speaker 1: cinephil and sixty is normally when I app but I'm
- 56:30Speaker 1: going to hand the ball to my Mantal Pinchowski are
- 56:32Speaker 1: fearless producer who's also a huge cinema fan and a
- 56:36Speaker 1: director and a producer and a writer. His documentary is
- 56:39Speaker 1: called The Whalers. It's coming on NHL Network, where Nate,
- 56:41Speaker 1: j D and I all work. It's premiering April thirteenth.
- 56:44Speaker 1: I watched it when it was previously airing. Where did
- 56:47Speaker 1: air and nesson? I think somewhere Talerybussess and why were
- 56:49Speaker 1: those networks I watched.
- 56:51Speaker 3: I was on a few RSNS.
- 56:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I watched some one of the rs sciences, but
- 56:53Speaker 1: it was terrific. Obviously, my buddy John forsln H thirty
- 56:56Speaker 1: years old, very dapper, very young, living back in the
- 56:58Speaker 1: day in Hartford, and your boy Howard Balden really is
- 57:01Speaker 1: the star of this. Not one of the Baldwin brothers.
- 57:03Speaker 1: It's not related to Alec Steven raylose guys, but he
- 57:05Speaker 1: really was the guy was founding father in many ways
- 57:08Speaker 1: of the Whaler's team. Painful to them to see the
- 57:10Speaker 1: Whaler's team leave. I moved to Connecticut in twenty ten,
- 57:13Speaker 1: and it was always amusing to me just how much
- 57:15Speaker 1: Whaler's paraphernialia was there. I mean, years after one of
- 57:18Speaker 1: the hottest selling jerseys T shirts, everything was still Whaler's.
- 57:21Speaker 1: I went to the Civic Center. It was like whatever
- 57:23Speaker 1: music on ice, you take the kids and go see
- 57:24Speaker 1: a circus or something. I couldn't believe there's NHL games
- 57:26Speaker 1: played here. I understand why people are upset in the
- 57:29Speaker 1: luxury sweets, et cetera, but the passion for the Whalers
- 57:31Speaker 1: runs deep. Save the whale. What is it about the
- 57:34Speaker 1: Whaler's talent that even made you want to make this documentary.
- 57:37Speaker 5: So my partner on the project, Pat Pickens, wrote a
- 57:41Speaker 5: book about the Whalers, so we started talking about that,
- 57:44Speaker 5: and then we started discussing adapting it into some sort
- 57:47Speaker 5: of documentary. We got a generous contribution from his alma mater,
- 57:54Speaker 5: Sacred Heart University, Nice and we.
- 57:56Speaker 3: Were on our way. From there.
- 57:57Speaker 5: We got I think close to three dozen different interviews
- 58:00Speaker 5: with people in the Whalers universe, players, owners, coaches, as executives.
- 58:06Speaker 5: And it premiered on like you mentioned, a bunch of
- 58:09Speaker 5: rsns last year, s n Y, NBC Sports Boston, I think,
- 58:13Speaker 5: NBC Sports Philly. And now we are excited we're going
- 58:16Speaker 5: to have our We're going national on NHL Network. So
- 58:19Speaker 5: it will premiere on April thirteenth, which is the anniversary
- 58:23Speaker 5: of the Whalers last game, and they'll continue to air
- 58:26Speaker 5: it over the next year or so on NHL Network.
- 58:29Speaker 3: So very exciting. Check it out.
- 58:31Speaker 5: I think they're already running promos on the network for
- 58:33Speaker 5: the premiere, So yeah, very exciting.
- 58:36Speaker 3: The Whalers are the best of all time.
- 58:38Speaker 1: The jersey's unbelievable, how to Torboti Steve Grimson, who is
- 58:41Speaker 1: one of the featured people among the three dozen interviews, STU,
- 58:43Speaker 1: are you going to make the rounds? Tal Like? If me,
- 58:45Speaker 1: j D and Nate are doing NHL Tonight or NHL now,
- 58:47Speaker 1: are we going to have you on as a guest promoting?
- 58:49Speaker 1: That's the more important thing. Are we doing a cross
- 58:51Speaker 1: over here? You're gonna be a HL network?
- 58:53Speaker 5: I think they're inviting former Whalers players.
- 58:56Speaker 3: No, I want you now.
- 58:59Speaker 5: I approve of that decision.
- 59:01Speaker 3: I'm going to say that I would fucking skewer you.
- 59:04Speaker 2: You and then we better all three be together too.
- 59:06Speaker 3: You mean you'd have nowhere to hide on there.
- 59:09Speaker 5: I'd have you live for twenty minutes working me until
- 59:13Speaker 5: that sweat that's night, that sweat starts glistening on my
- 59:16Speaker 5: those eyes, he'd be.
- 59:18Speaker 1: Swinting in the hole. That'll be a issue because this guy,
- 59:20Speaker 1: he's a terrific documentary just can't see very well. But
- 59:22Speaker 1: other than that, his vision certainly comes across In the
- 59:25Speaker 1: Whalers That shall network April thirteenth. I've got an NHL
- 59:28Speaker 1: Now this Friday. I'm going to ask the producer right now, like,
- 59:30Speaker 1: can we give Talpin chefskiwn for a light. I think
- 59:31Speaker 1: he'd be good for.
- 59:32Speaker 3: A segment Friday. You get this Friday?
- 59:34Speaker 1: Yeah, this Friday?
- 59:35Speaker 2: You on with me?
- 59:36Speaker 4: No?
- 59:36Speaker 3: Not?
- 59:36Speaker 5: The Pat Pickens lives in New Jersey, so he might
- 59:39Speaker 5: he might pop pot Pat Pickens.
- 59:41Speaker 1: Maybe here, Pad Pickens. All right, we'll see if he
- 59:43Speaker 1: comes by Buffalo's back. Savers have officially clinched the playoff spot,
- 59:46Speaker 1: first time in fourteen years. With that, the longest playoff
- 59:49Speaker 1: dra NHL history is officially over. We know how long
- 59:52Speaker 1: this fan base has been suffering. At the same time,
- 59:54Speaker 1: Sabers players have complained at times, but the number of
- 59:56Speaker 1: opposing fans making noise there, Jad, you were there this year.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: I was there this year.
- 1:00:01Speaker 6: Nate.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: I'm sure you've been there many time as a player
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: obviously is a fan, broadcaster, et cetera. This atmosphere, Jadi,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: I can't imagine how nuts are gonna be going to
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: key Bank Center. This is gonna be awesome.
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: Oh my key Bump Center. Right now. I tell you what,
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: chip Awah Street, the brothels will be full, the rubbin
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: tugs will be plentiful, wings, the wings will be full
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: full Tommy Love, there's not enough chickens in the world
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: to feed the fan base, came in and gave out
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: your in the playoffs those bills, that's your spot. Barbell
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: Tavern the best place of all time. H Yeah, man,
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: we'll so well deserved the fans. That's We're just also
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: happy for the fans. I think collectively, as as NHL
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: fans and broadcasters, I think everybody. It was my favorite
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: team growing up, Pat Lafontaine and and you know, it's
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: just that whole era to me was amazing. And to
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: see Lindy Rough back again, it's pretty funny. And was
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: he the last He was the last coach since they
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: made the playoffs? Right, was that it? Yeah, it was
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: him the last time, which is insane that man ever
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: stopped by again. A lot of credit. We talked about
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: Kevin Adams earlier in the show. Congratulations to Kevin Adams.
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: I think every winn he's just sitting there like picking
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: skin tags off his head like he's any on this one.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: I'll want to say is that Lindy Ruff never never
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: moved away from Buffalo. That's most impressive thing to be
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: thirty five years that guy's had a house in Buffalo.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Asked that December A second. I know you played here,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: I know this is your second govermnent of coaching, but
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: at some point he didn't feel like, yeah, maybe I'll
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: find some roots. No, never left my home in Buffalo.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: When I think of Buffalo, I'm thinking of Lindy.
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: Ruff, so so do I. Ironically enough, he coached against me.
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: In my first NHL game was against Buffalo. Two thousands
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: of guys everywhere, and they were loaded. They were loaded.
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: That's when you thought that Buffalo sabers. I mean they
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: had Drury and Brear, that was Finagains, call Campbell Miller.
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: They were loaded. That was my first NHL game. I
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: played two minutes. I digress though, though.
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: So I listen two minutes more than yeah.
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: I mean it's two minutes and they were a wagon
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: and they were good and and now they're a wagon again.
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: And I think you got a credit even you got
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: to credit the scouting staff and like you said, like
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: Jad said, Kevin Adams, everyone, because it's finally all come
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: together and it's it's working.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: It's like a well oiled machine.
- 1:02:23Speaker 6: Now.
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: I mean they're winning games differently, and I mean some
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: you saw the way they beat Tampa. I mean they're
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: they're the real deal, like they're gonna be uh you
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: know they I mean, Jad, I saw you say that.
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: I think on the network you said like they could
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: go to the final, and they could.
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: They really could.
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: They're that deep, they have everything, and there's no reason
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: why Lindy Ruff couldn't be the Coach of the Year
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: this year as well.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: I mean, I mean he could be for sure.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: Catching I'm catching flak online right now because I put
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: my top three for Jack Adams. I went Cooper and
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: in no particular order. I just went Cooper, Bedner and
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: Dan Muse, and I have Dan Muse winning it, just
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: because none of us thought big team Dan Muse, Big Dick,
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: the Dan Mue boos. But I think Lindy. You know
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: a lot of people I had gullets in Lindy Roff
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: as my like honorable mentions, and people skewered me for
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: not putting Lindy Roff. So I was just I was
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: just fighting.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: Well, the people pouring cold water will point it when
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: the team is that shitty for so long, like eventually
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: the world will turn. Like if you're so crappy, eventually
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: you're gonna hit on a few of these picks.
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: You mentioned Steve Eiserman quickly, Like, if I'm Detroit right now,
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: i am calling Kevin Adams and I'm making the gym
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: change now whether they make the playoffs or not, Like.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: Gon gonna wait to be the playoffs first.
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: They make the playoffs, it doesn't matter. They're not gonna win. No,
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: what's in the Come on, Detroit's cooked, right, it's even
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: if they do, it's it's gonna be quick, Yeah, quick
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: and easy, because I was watching that game. Larkin looks
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: injured right now. Guy's gutting it out big time.
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: Just a different team, like they look like a different team,
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: like since a month and a half yeard.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: Yeah, team that's also done. As the Florida Panthers Sabers
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: officially clinching their first playoff appearance in four ten years,
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: two time defending champions are officially out third team in
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: hockey history to miss the playoff to winning consecutive titles.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: They joined the sixty nine to seventy Montreal Canadians and
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: thirty seven to thirty Detroit Red Wings. Now three straight
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: Cup final appearance. There's numerous players appear in the four
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: Nation's face off, an Olympics a long story may not
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: be the worst thing for this team. Plus the top
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: pick this summer. It's crazy to thick Natee. But normally
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: when this happens, you go, wow, it's to change you
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: the guard end of the run and yet most but
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: I think we got Yeah, we'll be back next year.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: Absolute Cup contender.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: Yeah, the third old Ropendope, they're coming back.
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: They're going They're gonna win the first ten games of
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: the season and just stomp everybody next year guaranteed, like
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: the Yeah, this team is still prime to win this
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: This season was an anomaly when you lose Barkoff to
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: not you know, in training camp, Chuck's hurt for half
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: the season. I mean they had every obstacle in front
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: of them, and then Marshawn had injuries. I mean they
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: went through so many I mean Koulakoff, I mean there's
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: so many guys that got it hindered for their team.
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: I could keep going, but it's just they couldn't catch up.
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: It finally caught up to them, and I think for
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: next year though, it's they're gonna be in the Cup
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: conversation again next season, no question.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: Man.
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: They know how to tank though easy Billy's Edo got
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: the word out crazy. They're just like, well, you look
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: at the guys, I mean, the list of injured players
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: in their team could make a Stanley Cup run. Yeah,
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: like right now, it's crazy. It's like it's it's everybody.
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: I think Ka Chuck's the only one that's playing right
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: now in ver Haegy. But yeah, they'll be back. I'm
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: not worried at all. That's his easy, peasy.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: Close up shop. Here an inchhel and script. We gave
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: some love to Alexandro Vetchen this time Flowers once again too.
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: Sidney Crosby might seem like just another week in the
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: life as Sid the Kid. But three points Sunday against
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: Florida twenty first consecutive point per game seasons all time record.
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: I had a Wayne Gretzy's nineteen and if that was
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: enough said, also passing Steve Eiserman speaking of Iijerman seventh
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: on the all time points list, and JD warswith Novechkin.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: We're not sure if he's coming back next year. We
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: know Sid's coming back next year, maybe the year after that,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: and the Penguins are going to the playoffs.
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: They are I heard somebody say, I heard God, I
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: heard fucking ace. Say you think crowds will get two
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: thousand points? Wow? Answer, I hate agreeing with I don't
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: think he gets I think it's way too much. He's
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: that like seventeen what is he a seventeen hundred?
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: I look at him.
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: That's fucking egregious by him. But I think he plays
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: another three years. I think, well, I'd like to see it.
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: I think I think he goes to one more Olympics.
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: To your point, I think he does the last Olympics
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: on the fourth line and they win a gold medal
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: and he retires right after, just takes his clothes off,
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: spanks it on live TV in Nice, France, and then
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: just goes off to mar bea.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: One thousand, seven and fifty nine points Nate over under
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: does he get to two thousand? Now forty one away?
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: How many years is that?
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: That's three year?
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: Eighty points? He just played just be a point of
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: game station.
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: Yeah, eighty points okay?
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: So yes, yes, yes, yes, good, yes, yes, yes, yes on.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: On yes yes, and he just passed my favorite player
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: of all time Stevens.
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: Actually, now that you did the math, yeah, I couldn't
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: do the math in my head that quick. Yeah, I'll
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: take it. I'm in.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: I'll take right.
- 1:07:19Speaker 6: Even.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: Listen, sixty points for four seasons, he'll dip a little bit.
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: He's to be a point a game player.
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: So that's not bad either. I can do yeah, I
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: mean you could.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: Probably will be a point per game player.
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: Again, I saw in the notes. Are we not going
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: to talk about the KHL scandal? Well, maximum contois, you
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: want to do.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: We can go ahead.
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: You have you heard that?
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: I did hear about it.
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: I know one of the guys that's an important on
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: that team, So you have you have some inside It
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: is pretty funny.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: Okay, I might as well thought that. Okay. So former
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: Anaheim Ducks forward Max kum Twa during his recent playoff
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: game with Box It's too close to come quat come Twa.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: The camera worn by the referee in that game captured
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: his coach, former n Slava Koslov, even as team is
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: saying they don't like him, all while the opposing team
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: repeatedly accused him of slew fotting their players. So the
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: question to Nate Thompson and Jason demrrise, have you ever
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: seen any players openly admit to disliking their own teammate
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: I'll go first flyers from Chechmonic, absolutely the bipolar goaler.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: They shoot his head and warmups hated him.
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a couple of guys that won't name names
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: that like, yeah, collectively disliked. There's a couple guys. But
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: this is just I know a couple of the import
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: I know an import on that team, and I kind
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: of reached out and was like, dude, this is how
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: bad is this? And guys were like, like, he found
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: out and apparently he like screenshotted and put it into
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: the import chat because it was like imports that were
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: shit talking to him. Oh, and it was like him
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: and the import chat and guys like guys are just like, yeah,
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: you're you're a douchebag. It's like it's like kind of known,
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: Like I can't It's insane. I've never seen anything like that,
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: being openly disliked by all your teammate. It's gonna be hard,
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: especially in Russia being isolated. But how about that Russian
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: ref just no fucks given, oh, seriously posting it to
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: his YouTube channel whatever it was. Yeah, that's how funny
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: is that's ruthless? Oh but imagine you gotta go into
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: the room the next day, and your own coaches like
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: this guy stinks.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: What about the whole league?
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: The whole league, like everybody legend.
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: Yeah that's tough.
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: Oh you gotta fight every game?
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: Yeah you really do.
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: I mean, now, because how many chirps have you done
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: in the NHL where you went to guys and you're like,
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: you know, nobody likes you on your team. I use
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: that so many times.
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: I've used that more than two A v's question. Yes,
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: there are definitely guys that you don't like and that
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: guys don't like on their own team, and you use
- 1:09:45Speaker 4: that one.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: In honor of why Russell gave us an extended cut,
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: there'll be an unrated cut in which Nate and JD
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: will tell me and tell wholess people were You will
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: not hear it. We will hear it. Thanks for checking

- 1:09:56Speaker 1: minute episode. We know you loved it. We'll see you
