- 0:06Speaker 1: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 0:11Speaker 1: best inside of your Utes. Let's get back to OC
- 0:14Speaker 1: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Oh, our long nightmare is over.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Football is back, and that means we get to check
- 0:26Speaker 3: in with the best in the business from Paramount Sports.
- 0:28Speaker 3: His name is Lee Sterling, and for entertainment purposes, he
- 0:32Speaker 3: will guide us through the lines on a college football weekend.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Lee Sterling, good friend of the show. How are you, sir?
- 0:39Speaker 4: I'm great. I am terrific. First time in a long time,
- 0:44Speaker 4: took a long vacation, went to Norway. You ever been there?
- 0:47Speaker 2: I have never been to Norway. I've been to Sweden,
- 0:49Speaker 2: but not Norway.
- 0:50Speaker 4: Yep. Put it on your bucket list. The fjords are
- 0:53Speaker 4: incredible with the waterfalls and the glaciers and the people.
- 0:57Speaker 4: That's a country that has figured it out. I didn't
- 1:01Speaker 4: know they ended up finding oil offshore in 69, and
- 1:06Speaker 4: they just keep reinventing and just keep taking that money.
- 1:11Speaker 4: They're making it and investing it, and every person gets
- 1:15Speaker 4: a nice return every year, a nice paycheck, and they
- 1:17Speaker 4: get free health care. There's no homeless. The only problem, well,
- 1:22Speaker 4: there's two problems. It gets cold in the winter, and
- 1:26Speaker 4: you're six hours ahead. Following sports is practically impossible.
- 1:31Speaker 3: That is tough, but shout out to Norway.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Maybe I'll have to pay a visit sooner than later.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Man, great to have football back, Lee, and excited to
- 1:40Speaker 3: have you back on.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Let's dive right into the lines here.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Coming up for this weekend, uh, Oregon Boise state and
- 1:47Speaker 3: the ducks are big time favorites here. This is not
- 1:51Speaker 3: in most people's opinion, the Boise state of old that
- 1:54Speaker 3: might be more capable of pulling off an upset like
- 1:56Speaker 3: this one. It's also not the Oregon of old. This
- 1:59Speaker 3: is one of the top payrolls in college football.
- 2:02Speaker 2: How do you see it?
- 2:03Speaker 4: Well, here's the problem with Boise. They just don't have
- 2:05Speaker 4: the money. They can't keep their players. They're able to
- 2:08Speaker 4: keep their quarterback, but not much else. So, uh, Last
- 2:12Speaker 4: time they played Oregon, they had to scramble. The Ducks
- 2:17Speaker 4: had to score with 10 minutes to go on a
- 2:19Speaker 4: 100-yard kickoff return to tie that game up and then
- 2:25Speaker 4: win it on the last play of the game. I
- 2:28Speaker 4: think this is going to be a different game than
- 2:30Speaker 4: two years ago. So the only difference is they have
- 2:33Speaker 4: two new coordinators, and that actually might help them in
- 2:36Speaker 4: game planning. I don't think Boise knows what to expect here,
- 2:40Speaker 4: and any of those kids who are around two years ago,
- 2:42Speaker 4: there's a lot of them, they're going to be forewarned,
- 2:45Speaker 4: and I think they're going to want to lay one
- 2:47Speaker 4: here on Boise. So Boise switching conferences went to a
- 2:52Speaker 4: much weaker conference. I don't like the switch here. I
- 2:55Speaker 4: think the Ducks' role here behind Dante Moore, sometimes you've
- 2:59Speaker 4: got to lay it if you want to play it here. Ducks, 45-17.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Do you believe Oregon is a national championship contender because
- 3:08Speaker 3: it's championship or bust for them from here on out
- 3:11Speaker 3: as long as Uncle Phil's writing checks on this payroll?
- 3:14Speaker 3: Is this a year where they're national championship contenders for you?
- 3:17Speaker 4: It's the only year that they have a chance, but
- 3:20Speaker 4: I still think that there's a couple other teams that
- 3:22Speaker 4: are just better than them, and they just have the
- 3:25Speaker 4: DNA to pull it off. But how great would it
- 3:29Speaker 4: be if the Ducks faced Miami and Mario faces his
- 3:34Speaker 4: old team? That would be something.
- 3:36Speaker 2: That'd be awesome.
- 3:38Speaker 3: The old master versus the successor and Dan Lanning trying
- 3:42Speaker 3: to get it done up there.
- 3:42Speaker 2: That'd be a fun storyline. All right. We're the home
- 3:46Speaker 2: of the Utes.
- 3:46Speaker 3: We will see the Aggies of Utah State, not this
- 3:49Speaker 3: coming weekend, but the following for week three. Utah State
- 3:53Speaker 3: are 12 and a half point favorites against Idaho State,
- 3:57Speaker 3: a big sky team, much like the one Utah played
- 4:00Speaker 3: last night. The Aggies lost their starting quarterback, Bryson Barnes.
- 4:05Speaker 3: He's in the Canadian Football League now.
- 4:08Speaker 2: They're favorites here, but not by much. How do you
- 4:10Speaker 2: see it?
- 4:10Speaker 4: Well, I still think that there's a talent discrepancy here.
- 4:14Speaker 4: And I think that Hill said, I think that he's
- 4:19Speaker 4: going to be good enough for them. Here's a guy that,
- 4:22Speaker 4: you know, can run and throw the football. He's played
- 4:25Speaker 4: against good competition, you know, being at BYU. And I
- 4:28Speaker 4: like some of their transfers. You don't know them. I mean,
- 4:31Speaker 4: they're not big names, but some of these guys, I
- 4:35Speaker 4: think they did some really good scouting. They played a
- 4:37Speaker 4: lower level school, especially on defense teams. Comic colleges like St. Thomas,
- 4:42Speaker 4: Mississippi Valley State, and also, like I said, they always
- 4:47Speaker 4: get guys from BYU looking to get more playing time.
- 4:50Speaker 4: So I like Utah State here. I think the home
- 4:53Speaker 4: field advantage is big here. And also, I think their
- 4:57Speaker 4: special teams will be improved over last year, where they're
- 5:00Speaker 4: only ranking 113th out of 134 teams. So they get
- 5:04Speaker 4: those return games going with Jacob's. Javon Jacobs, Sarah, they're
- 5:09Speaker 4: going to be tough to beat. I like the, I
- 5:11Speaker 4: like the Aggies here. I think they went in cover here,
- 5:13Speaker 4: 35 to 20.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Speaker 2, maybe one of the headline games of this
- 5:19Speaker 3: opening weekend, which lacks, if I'm being honest with slacks,
- 5:21Speaker 3: like big time premier match-ups, but from a brand value standpoint,
- 5:25Speaker 3: and certainly from a headlines, a recent headline standpoint, Clemson
- 5:29Speaker 3: LSU carries a bit of intrigue to it. LSU for,
- 5:35Speaker 3: as far as we know, is going to have a
- 5:36Speaker 3: couple of former NFL guys on the roster after winning
- 5:40Speaker 3: that case yesterday, they are ranked Clemson is not at
- 5:44Speaker 3: least not in the preseason LSU, 10 point favorites.
- 5:48Speaker 2: How does this one play out?
- 5:49Speaker 4: Yeah. And I think that, you know, dabble, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 4: he might have an expiration date on his stay here
- 5:56Speaker 4: in Clemson. So you watched him last year. I mean,
- 6:00Speaker 4: everything that could go wrong, went wrong. His quarterback, Kate Klubnick, who,
- 6:04Speaker 4: you know, there for four years, everyone thought after the
- 6:07Speaker 4: freshman year, he's going to be the next coming, never
- 6:10Speaker 4: got it done. They finished seven and six. He goes
- 6:12Speaker 4: to the Jets training camp and looks great. So probably
- 6:16Speaker 4: wasn't the kid, probably the coaching and getting him to
- 6:19Speaker 4: play at a high level. They even lost four of
- 6:21Speaker 4: the top five defensive linemen. We're not able to get
- 6:23Speaker 4: the best out of those guys. There was projections two
- 6:26Speaker 4: years ago that three or four of those guys were
- 6:28Speaker 4: going to be top 10 picks. LSU had trouble running
- 6:32Speaker 4: the football last year, just 104 rushing yards per game.
- 6:36Speaker 4: They've got to pick that up. Only 10 rushing touchdowns.
- 6:39Speaker 4: They ranked 118th out of 134 teams running the football. But,
- 6:43Speaker 4: you know, you get the best offensive tackle, maybe a
- 6:45Speaker 4: kid that goes in the first round from Colorado, another
- 6:48Speaker 4: couple guys there, a couple receivers in the transfer portal
- 6:53Speaker 4: that will open up the passing game. And Sam Leavitt,
- 6:55Speaker 4: when he's healthy, and he is right now, he may
- 6:57Speaker 4: not be in four or five weeks. They're going to
- 7:00Speaker 4: be a team that is going to be tough to
- 7:02Speaker 4: reckon with. So I know Dabo would like to finish
- 7:05Speaker 4: strong here, maybe have a big season, move on to
- 7:09Speaker 4: Alabama as alma mater, but I don't think it's going
- 7:12Speaker 4: to be happening. This place is going to be rocking.
- 7:14Speaker 4: They say they might blow the top off the stadium
- 7:17Speaker 4: here on Saturday night. LSU rolls here, LSU Tigers, 30
- 7:22Speaker 4: Clemson Tigers, 17.
- 7:23Speaker 3: We certainly haven't heard the last Lee of this like
- 7:26Speaker 3: big picture stuff with pro players coming back in and LSU,
- 7:31Speaker 3: they're the ones who are willing to die on this hill.
- 7:34Speaker 3: The sec is like, no, we're not going to let
- 7:36Speaker 3: this happen. So I mean, is this going to be
- 7:38Speaker 3: a storyline that plays out through the season or are
- 7:40Speaker 3: we going to shelve it until after it's done?
- 7:44Speaker 4: I think it's not going to play out for more
- 7:45Speaker 4: than a week, 10 days, and then they'll have to
- 7:48Speaker 4: decide which way to go. But, I mean, LSU is
- 7:51Speaker 4: kind of caught in the middle. They're saying they need
- 7:54Speaker 4: to play the kids, and the conference is saying, no,
- 7:56Speaker 4: you don't. So, you know, maybe we need to open
- 7:59Speaker 4: up a new TV station. You know, you have court TV.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Call it sports court TV. There's at least one case
- 8:06Speaker 4: going on every week everyone wants to see that involves sports.
- 8:09Speaker 4: There's at least one athlete or ex-athlete. you know, that,
- 8:13Speaker 4: that has a court case is arrested. Can you imagine
- 8:15Speaker 4: you got, you know, guys on the scene, here we go.
- 8:18Speaker 4: We got a Georgia offensive lineman pulled over for 85
- 8:22Speaker 4: and a 25, you know, show the footage there. How
- 8:25Speaker 4: great would that be?
- 8:26Speaker 2: Wow.
- 8:28Speaker 3: No limit on the stuff we could get in this
- 8:30Speaker 3: year of college football, obviously.
- 8:33Speaker 4: All right.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Um, High expectations for BYU as they start their season
- 8:38Speaker 3: under Kalani Satake. After a little minor athletic department turmoil
- 8:43Speaker 3: in the offseason, I don't think anything that affects players,
- 8:46Speaker 3: but certainly a distraction for Kalani and some of the
- 8:48Speaker 3: coaches with that whole Brian Santiago situation. They are massive 51.5-point
- 8:54Speaker 3: favorites against Utah Tech, who is still a pretty recent
- 8:58Speaker 3: addition to Division I football. Can BYU cover on a
- 9:03Speaker 3: line this fat?
- 9:05Speaker 4: It seems like one of the few schools that's able
- 9:07Speaker 4: to play some of these schools in Utah tough is
- 9:10Speaker 4: Weber State. Isn't that where you went to school also
- 9:12Speaker 4: to finish your career?
- 9:13Speaker 2: Weber State, yes. Utah Tech, though? Utah Tech.
- 9:17Speaker 4: No, no. Utah Tech, I mean, the talent, I was
- 9:20Speaker 4: watching their game last week. They just don't have the
- 9:22Speaker 4: players right now. And, you know, it just depends on
- 9:25Speaker 4: how long the BYU keeps their starters in. They have
- 9:29Speaker 4: Arizona next week, which is a big game. So I
- 9:32Speaker 4: think they're going to keep their starters in at least
- 9:34Speaker 4: three quarters. And I just think Utah Tech, I mean,
- 9:38Speaker 4: they should be playing probably NAIA Division III ball. They're
- 9:42Speaker 4: just not at this level just yet. fear Bachmeier and
- 9:46Speaker 4: also LJ Martin should have huge games. And I think
- 9:48Speaker 4: they're going to try to get some of the young receivers,
- 9:51Speaker 4: you know, and, and some of the transfer guys, some action.
- 9:55Speaker 4: So I like BYU. I think they win this game here,
- 9:57Speaker 4: 65 to six.
- 10:00Speaker 3: BYU covers according to Lee Sterling on a 51 and
- 10:03Speaker 3: a half line, um, paramount sports.com. What else can our
- 10:09Speaker 3: people know about what you're doing as we start off
- 10:11Speaker 3: this college football season?
- 10:14Speaker 4: So this is what I want to do today. I
- 10:17Speaker 4: know people listen. I know people like to have some
- 10:21Speaker 4: fun and would like to win. I'm going to give
- 10:23Speaker 4: them three free selections for tonight. I have three plays
- 10:27Speaker 4: I like tonight and caution nothing. So we've won 32
- 10:31Speaker 4: out of 33 seasons. I'm a former college quarterback. This
- 10:35Speaker 4: is all I do. Study tapes. I think I'm able
- 10:39Speaker 4: to figure some things out that most people can't. We've
- 10:41Speaker 4: won six of the last seven Super Bowls, six of
- 10:43Speaker 4: the last seven national championship games. You want to get
- 10:47Speaker 4: three free plays, go to paramountsports.com where it says join
- 10:50Speaker 4: our mailing list on the homepage, paramountsports.com. Join our mailing list.
- 10:56Speaker 4: Just fill that out. Within 30 minutes, we will email
- 10:59Speaker 4: you the three plays for tonight. I know if I
- 11:01Speaker 4: win for you, go 2-1 or 3-0 and put some
- 11:04Speaker 4: jingle in your pockets. You're going to want to consider
- 11:06Speaker 4: me for the future. Also, the UFC. We've won 13
- 11:10Speaker 4: of the last 15 cards and got robbed, I thought,
- 11:15Speaker 4: last week. Did you watch the Jenkins-Woodson fight?
- 11:18Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Okay. it was clearly one, one out of the judges
- 11:24Speaker 4: and the, I think it's the 15 ring side of observers.
- 11:27Speaker 4: They had it one, one watched the last round of
- 11:31Speaker 4: that fight. We had Jenkins plus one 25. I thought
- 11:34Speaker 4: he dominated the round. I don't think woods had landed six,
- 11:37Speaker 4: seven punches the entire round. He shakes his head, you know, no,
- 11:41Speaker 4: every time he gets hit. But, uh, I thought it
- 11:44Speaker 4: was one of the biggest robberies. One of the judges,
- 11:46Speaker 4: I've never seen his name before who judged the fight
- 11:49Speaker 4: at a, out of Shanghai. But, you know, I guess
- 11:51Speaker 4: they pick up some guys. They don't want to fly people,
- 11:54Speaker 4: you know, halfway around the world. But I thought it
- 11:57Speaker 4: was a really bad decision, cost us a winning card.
- 12:00Speaker 4: But looking to get back on track, we do that well.
- 12:03Speaker 4: And we have a super saver card, five selections, including
- 12:06Speaker 4: a max wager, 40 and 50 unit selection, just $ 25.
- 12:11Speaker 4: Check it all out, paramountsports.com.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Lee, we got less than a month until the UFC
- 12:17Speaker 3: returns tonight. to Salt Lake city and no announced main
- 12:20Speaker 3: event yet.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I know. Crazy. They got it. They got to
- 12:24Speaker 4: figure it out.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Lee.
- 12:26Speaker 2: You're the man.
- 12:27Speaker 3: I'm glad we're doing this again this year. Appreciate you
- 12:29Speaker 3: joining us. We'll talk again next week.
- 12:31Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 12:32Speaker 2: See you.
