[rock music] I know this theme. I know this song.
• 0:12
[rock music] Hey, welcome to the radio program, everybody.
• 0:28
This is Full Spectrum Cycling, show number 281, if I'm not mistaken. Uh, I think you are correct. I c- It's what it says on the, the cheat sheet here, so. Mine was loading improperly, so
• 0:42
I, I believe it is all correct now. I believe in you. I- JK. Mm-hmm. That's JK over there with the, uh- Hi... Public Image Limited- Hi... shirt on. And playing the part of Tony tonight is, uh, Donardo. I'm not Tony.
• 0:52
[laughs] But I did work with him. Right. Yeah. [laughs] I wanna be him. [laughs] Uh, Tony's, I guess, feeling under the weather. Uh, I'm Sven, of course, and this again is Full Spectrum Cycling.
• 1:05
And we'll see you next week. Bye. See you later. Later. [laughs] Crush in- Boy... to the variety pack time. I don't even know what happened last week. I've kind of lost track of almost the whole week somehow. Oh, right.
• 1:19
[laughs] I planned to do my, you know, some miles towards my 100. Mm-hmm. Now, shoulder's hurting like the thing. Oh, yeah, yeah. But- That's always... It's getting better. Yeah.
• 1:30
Next week when it's cold out I'll have to put in some extra miles and warm up. Sure, sure. Uh, jumped on Steve, went down to, uh, uh, the WMSE
• 1:42
front of studio just to hop on the hop because the Boogie Bang was doing their live remote. On the hop? On the hop, yeah. No way. So. W- was that last Wednesday? Saturday. Oh, Saturday. Okay.
• 1:53
'Cause I know I heard him talking about it. I thought it was... D- are they doing it more often now? They're trying to. I mean- It's, it's a good-... it's a good time. It- It's a good bit.
• 1:59
They, it's roll around on the hop and... Yeah. Chris Treater did, um, one a few months ago, and this was- Right on... the second one. And... So Boogie Bang, what happened to Craig McNeill?
• 2:13
Like, he used to be there with, uh- Barry?... Barry. Yeah. I just, I'm not sure. And, and I, I've seen him. I saw him at RW 24, but, like, he just disappeared. Oh, sometimes they just eject.
• 2:24
[laughs] I guess they'll return. And I- I- I mean, it's all volunteer. I mean- Mm-hmm... apart from the... It's, uh, it's the greatest- Position... greatest radio station in the world. Oh, yeah.
• 2:34
[laughs] But, you know, I don't know 'cause Tony's not here, so we don't have any actual on air WMSE anywhere. Oh, maybe I got something in my bag. Well, the artwork is from WMSE. Oh, there we go.
• 2:43
All this art is from WMSE. Ask me. Oh, there. Adjacent. For their, like, February art thing. I usually buy a piece or two. Nice. We'll see how that goes this year. It's gotta be something.
• 2:53
I need some more, uh, some more, um, Newsky stuff. I like the Newsky stuff. Uh- He's pretty great. Didn't he just put a book out? Yeah, he did. Yeah, I think he did. He did. Okay.
• 3:03
And he's been playing around too with the band or with the him. Yep, yep. We, uh- Good stuff... biked around Lake Michigan, Alicia and I, and we were in, uh, Charlevoix something. I think that's the name- Okay...
• 3:15
of the town. Sure, on the other side of the pond. On the other side of the pond. And, and it was like, we went out and there was Newsky playing. We're like, "Newsky, yeah." [laughs] It was, it was awesome.
• 3:25
It's one of those right on things. Yeah. Yeah. It was great. Yeah. Yeah. My first, uh, I believe you were there as well, first introduction to Newsky was at, uh, Lebowski Fest playing the- Mm-hmm...
• 3:35
atrium of the, uh, um- Pabst Theatre?... Pabst Theatre. Yep. Like, in just an afternoon- Right... lunch concert or whatever the day of them playing Lebowski in Cathedral Square. Full on White Russian- Yeah... action.
• 3:48
Oh, God, I miss Lebowski Fest. Come on back. [laughs] It was so, it was so grand. [laughs] I... It hasn't been here for a while, but it should come back. Mm-mm. Yeah. Um, have I...
• 4:00
I think I mentioned my buddy Wick before. He's, uh, Wick Wickster on Facebook. [laughs] He's a bike industry guy. He used to be part of CORE. I don't know exactly what he's doing now, but he's been around forever.
• 4:11
But if he doesn't look like the Dude- [laughs]... nobody else looks like the Dude. Never takes- [laughs] And when we did trade shows, when those were a big thing back before the, uh, the big 2020, uh, pandemic thing,
• 4:22
they, their booth always had, like, a 20-foot bar behind the curtain. Oh, brilliant. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Good stuff.
• 4:32
[laughs] Um, he had gotten his truck stolen and he, and his trailer, and he does, like, cyclo-cross events, other cycling events on the West Coast mostly. Oregon, Washington, and such over there.
• 4:43
Uh, but I guess he got it back, so I don't know if all the gear's in it. Haven't heard yet, but, uh, that's kind of the Lebowski tie-in there. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yes. Uh, hey, hey, you know what's coming up?
• 4:55
Hey, hey, hey, really soon is the winter bike party over at Amorphic- Mm-hmm... which will be December 4th, Wednesday night, if you're in Milwaukee that day. Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday? Be a good day to pop in.
• 5:07
There's gonna be some s- people that ride all year rounds telling you stuff about how they make that work for them. And since we haven't had snow for a few years, I guess it's not really that hard- It's not r-...
• 5:16
for anybody anymore. [laughs] Right, right, right. It's more, yeah, it's more of a cold, cold prevention. It's like, oh, sideways rain. Uh, yeah. That's the only thing that stops me. What about ice? Uh, don't. Yeah.
• 5:29
There's- No, studded tires. Whatever. I got off my studded tire bike- It, it, it-... and fell to the ground. Yeah. It gives you the, it gives you more confidence. What's, uh- And a, and a bit more stick.
• 5:40
I, if you are on- But- If you're on a fat bike with studded tires, I think it's a lot like riding on gravel. You've got pretty decent traction. Yeah. Until you- Until you don't.
• 5:49
Until you, yeah, until stuff goes kind of- That's what I mean. [laughs] That's what I mean. But, but you mentally... You know, I mean, you have the confidence. Right. You know?
• 5:56
But just don't take too much for the confidence. Yeah. You know?
• 5:59
Uh, I s- uh, uh- I've just biffed on ice way too many times that I- Yeah, I had, was mine- I respect, I res- Was, was it- I fear and respect that damn ice...
• 6:08
was mine last year or the year before when I did the skid into the, into the ice. [laughs] Like, directly into the ice. Yes. I, I... So we used to be across the, across from Morphic in that big building, right? Yes.
• 6:23
Like 150, 200 feet away. Yeah, yeah. So I'm like, "I'm gonna roll over there on the bike with the slicks on in the snow- [laughs]... and the whatever," and, "Oh, I'm just gonna make a nice skid in the snow."
• 6:32
Well, unfortunately it wasn't gravel and snow, it was, it was snow and ice. [laughs] Oh, yeah. Zoop. Oh, did that hurt. Yeah, you get up and you're like, "Oh, yeah. I'm fine. I'm fine."
• 6:44
Isn't that amazing how the body says, "I'm fine. I'm fine." Oh, yeah. And it's only like an hour later we realize, "I think I broke something." Yeah. Ah. Yeah, I don't know if I broke anything that day, but...
• 6:53
[laughs] Yeah, that's when I did the, uh- My pride, for sure. Yeah.
• 6:57
Uh, when I slipped, fell, tore bicep and jammed thumb, but didn't really know that at the time, so the next morning was- There might have been other, other, uh, uh- Numbing agents... circumstances. Yeah.
• 7:08
[laughs] Numbing agents that kinda dulled the reaction time, but not that bad. I was just walking, that was the thing. And, uh- Oh, no...
• 7:18
but then I got up in the morning to meet these guys to go down to the Polar Bear and watch the dips go in the dip, and it was progressively, like, ah, I can't really use my left arm at all. Oh. But I'm biking still.
• 7:30
I'm just like, "Okay, well, we're just gonna do this one-handed aren't we?" And then it was just like, ah, I think it's a very good idea if I go home. [laughs] Everyone wanted to go to the swinging door.
• 7:43
All right, I'll do that. Oh, yeah, that's funny. I'm like, "I don't think I can make it." Wait, wait, did you say, "It's a good idea I should go home," and then you went to the swinging door? No, no, no, no.
• 7:50
That's what I heard. I just think you already said- No, they were going to the swinging door- Oh, okay. [laughs]... but I was like, I'm like, "Uh," the call of the door was dissuaded that much. I was like, "Oh, no, no.
• 7:59
This is just a poor idea." I tried to do that without hearing anything. I think I didn't call into the call-in studio call screener line. Oh, oopsie poopsie. So, oh well. I don't know what's going on here.
• 8:12
Is something bad? No, it just means that I didn't set it up for a call-in yesterday. Oh. Hey, Mark, if you're calling in, we'll get at you next week. [laughs] Or I could do it now and... We'll just talk.
• 8:23
You guys, you guys talk amongst yourselves. We were. [laughs] I'll, I'll, I'll talk about my winter bike. I have the asymptotic bike. I have a Raleigh Tourist with rod brakes, right?
• 8:36
So the, they pull up and hit the rim from the underside. Oh. You have to have special rims for that. And I've got studded Schwalbe tires on there. Mm.
• 8:47
And the bike cannot be disassembled because everything is rusted shut. [laughs] Oh, yeah. Except for the drive mechanics, right? [laughs] Um,
• 8:56
but when you pull the rod brakes, you slow down quickly, but you never actually stop. So you have to put your foot down to- Oh, a little, a little Freddy-... to stop, right... a little Freddy Flintstone on it?
• 9:08
But when you take off, it's really slow, too. So everything is smooth and groovy, and that's what you want on snow and ice. Mm-hmm. You want smooth and groovy, and this bike is unstoppable. Oh. It's... Is it a good bike?
• 9:24
No, but it's unstoppable. Good- I love that bike... good for this. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. It's good, uh- Yeah, that's like my purple beater. It- It's just perfect for- What you need it for... yeah.
• 9:34
When like, okay, on this bike, you know, okay, a flat in here and I don't wanna deal with it, and this, that, and the other. Okay, da, right, and beh, beh, beh, beh. So all these people have these- Oh, here. Here it is.
• 9:42
Boom... they have like $5,000 bikes, and I'm like, "This was 150 bucks and I put like 50 bucks worth of tires on." Nice. It's done.
• 9:51
Albeit, albeit the clunker is very in line to usurp my purple alt as the- Oh, like the new back clunker choice?... the winter clunker. Just the, just the, yeah, default bike of- Ready to roll. Yeah. Just like, ah.
• 10:07
Speaking, speaking of clunkers, uh, mostly for Milwaukee folks I'd imagine, but anybody's interested in that found piece of machinery in the other room, the, the Jamis... Ooh, excuse me. Hey. It's kind of a burpy beer.
• 10:18
Yeah. Um- They are known for it a little. It is, um, uh- Isn't it?... it is a Jamis Boss Cruiser, which is a coaster brake bike. Ah. Uh, it's Ruth Wiles, but- Oh, yeah...
• 10:28
she said anybody, anybody is interested in it, she'd w- willing to let it go for a very reasonable price. And it's a, it's a cool bike. It's got handlebars about yay wide.
• 10:38
It's got a nice, uh, milk rack, milk, uh- Oh, right, right, right... milk crate rack on the front of it. And it's coaster brake, which is, you know, awesome. Yeah. It can be. You know what I'd love?
• 10:48
If you can mentally get in your head. I'd love a coaster brake that if you backpedaled gently, you could backpedal. And it's, holy shit, and then you, then you actually activate the coaster brake. Oh.
• 10:58
But you, you get- But I love to backpedal. Yeah. Just like- Right?... strolling down the street, like moonwalking- Yeah, yeah... when you're riding? Yeah. Backpedaling is a thing for me, right?
• 11:06
But, but it would be like akin to a, like clipping. You know what I mean? Like, like clipping your, like clipless. Yeah.
• 11:14
I think mentally I'm getting, for the coaster, you'd have to like do a little shimmy with your foot. Oh, right. I, I just meant holy shit. To activate it. I meant like, like panic mode.
• 11:25
It's just like- And then the brakes go... some sort of a, some sort of G-force or, or some kinda- Well, like your seatbelt... wha-pow, wha-pow. It's like your seatbelt.
• 11:33
You can lean forward, you can lean forward, but then when something happens it locks in place. Right. That's what I want for the coaster brake. How does it know? How does it know? What? It's magic. Yeah.
• 11:41
How does it know? [laughs] I think it's called physics. [laughs] That's magic. Yeah. It's with numbers. [laughs] Very, very true. All right, I'm gonna stand up. I can't stand the squeaking. [laughs] Oh, right on.
• 11:56
[squeaking] That's, um, that's, say, your 1960s era kinda mod chair, you know? So... Yeah, and it does have the orange Julius kinda- I got new orange chairs in the other room, but you know, those are new Yeah.
• 12:11
Can't sit in that. Well, I mostly got them 'cause that table in there is a lot taller, and th- and these don't go up and down, so you'd be... Like, the table would be, like, right here. That'd be weird.
• 12:22
[laughs] That'd be, like, strange. Speaking of Orange Julius, we saw Modest Mouse the other night. That was a pretty fun show. It was like one, the one voice- [laughs]... and that was it, right? You know?
• 12:34
Is he the only original guy left? So it turns out everybody... Th- they're touring doing The Good News for Bad News People, whatever that... You know what I mean? It's like Good News for People Who Like Bad News.
• 12:46
They're redoing that album. Everybody who made that album is alive, but only he was on tour. [laughs] Gotcha. It was like- Oh, okay. Yeah. But, you know, it's Modest Mouse voice.
• 12:58
[laughs] Like, can you imagine the band without him? It's like they'd be perfect, but wait a second. Hold on. Oh, yeah. Yeah. The dance. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Where, where were they playing? Excuse me. Good Lord.
• 13:09
I- Riverside. Riverside. Messing around with stuff here. Yeah. Sorry to say, was the- Messing around... sorry to ask, was the security just a pain in the ass? Eh. The TSA line, I mean. No, not really.
• 13:25
You can- I mean, first of all- You don't have... No, you didn't... I'm old, and they, like, they just see the gray hair, and they're like, "Just get in." Oh. You know, I did this- [laughs] I did this...
• 13:35
when I walked in. What was it? I didn't drop pants or anything. No, I had, I [laughs] I had, I had something in my pocket. [laughs] And then it was like something went off. Beep, beep, beep, beep. Okay, then you're good.
• 13:50
[laughs] I'm like, "What? Did I just, like, Jedi mind trick this guy without even, like, thinking or knowing I did that?" That's like how I used to go on airplanes, right?
• 13:57
I, I have it in my pocket 'cause it was wood, and it's like I clear everything- Yeah... and, and then go to the bathroom at 30,000 feet and just walk out just like, "I think I'm the highest guy on this airplane."
• 14:11
[laughs] I loved that. I don't do it. I, I... Nah, I, I, I love Jesus. Can't do that anymore. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. You can't smoke anything on a airplane, not even your little- I bet I could get away with it...
• 14:23
weird- I totally bet I could get away with that. How hard is it to hold your hit till it's gone and then into the little trash canny thing? Like super, super- Yeah. Well, no.
• 14:33
Like the super, uh- 'Cause it's, it's, uh, got some good suction. Yeah. Yeah. But you have to time it. You gotta time it. Don't cough. Yeah. Right? No coughing. But, but that's the thing, you gotta cough to get it out.
• 14:42
[laughs] [laughs] I mean, it's such a... What to do, what to do world. [laughs] See, these are the thoughts. These are the conspiracy theories I like, not the creepy, painful- [laughs]... dangerous ones.
• 14:57
[laughs] All righty. Good stuff. [laughs] Uh-oh. Uh, Ian. Oh, let's do that. Are we at the top of the hill? We'll talk about Ian- Oh, I'm- We'll talk about Ian once we're on the top of the hill,
• 15:08
just because you're, you're re-upping there. Yeah. JK brought a Three Floyds- Whoa... variety pack today. Our first [laughs] space, space whistle, or speed castle, or whatever. Speed castle. Speed castle.
• 15:22
World ending Pilsner. For a, for a Pilsner- Yeah, it's pretty good... it's, it's very tasty. It's- It's totally good... um, it's- Five, six... it's not- I would do it. Yeah. I would do it.
• 15:32
If I found that at a bar, I'd be like, "Yeah, sure." I kind of miss, uh, uh... What was the company? Kompie, as I called them. That was where Space Whistle was from. Ah, there it is. Space Whistle.
• 15:42
That's why the name was sounding familiar. Space Whistle. [laughs] Uh, the, the next... Uh, what's next on the... Turbo Reaper is the next, next on the list here. Which is the normal- Clearly I'm not keeping up...
• 15:56
7% IPA. It's not normal. [laughs] Without warning, something's dawning at our latest West Coast style IPA awaits your defenseless thirst.
• 16:09
[laughs] As colossal hop aromas ride in harmony with tropical and citrus notes, you better run for cover. Yeah. There is no other. They always have just great art, and most of the time their beers have really hit well.
• 16:23
Three Floyds is good. Yeah. I mean, this is seven, but it never... It doesn't, for me, doesn't taste like a seven. It's not like super heavy heavy. Denaro stood up. [burps] It's all about dig- You have to let it- Yeah.
• 16:39
Get those digestive- If your trash over here-... tracts going. Gotta go for a walk. Yeah, go like this. Good twist. Wait, I can't do that. Okay. Uh, oh, yeah, range of motion, huh?
• 16:49
Literally I have like- Have you, have you been using your elastics? No, I have a pulley system. It's like a torture device. Oh, I thought you- And you pull up and down like this, and yeah. I think I saw a picture of you.
• 16:58
Didn't you have, like, the little wind on one- Yeah, that had the-... weird machine? [laughs] That was... You put it in, and it goes... There's a picture of me asleep- Yeah... on the [snores].
• 17:10
So how far post-op are you? [laughs] Uh, five weeks. And you're out of the chair now, or are you- Oh, God, no. That's long gone. I'd like... I'm actually... I'm fine. I just... You know, I'm trying to be good.
• 17:22
I don't wanna hurt it again, right? And so- Yeah. Not, not till- But I'm like, "When- Not so soon anyway... when can I bike?" You know? Yeah. But it's all fine. But I, I, I go to...
• 17:31
I went to physical therapy, and they're like, "Can you do this?" And I'm like, "Yeah, I can do that." "Can you do this?" "Yeah, I can do that." And they're like, "What's the matter with you?"
• 17:38
  And I'm like, "I don't know."
• 17:39
Like [laughs] Well, the one that got me, and e- even hurts on this even though he claims that it's no tear or anything, it's just bruised or something, is when you're unloading the dishwasher.
• 17:47
I don't know if you do that at your house. No. But when you put that... You make that motion like this with the plates to put them up on the shelf.
• 17:54
That's the one that kept being like, "Yeah, that's not ready yet to do that." That's exactly the same thing. Like, grab the milk out of the fridge and do this. That's not gonna happen, not again on the milk. Because mm.
• 18:04
Yeah, yeah. [laughs] It's not gonna happen. Uh, our buddy Ian from Bicycle Benefits- Mm.
• 18:11
Uh, local, local guy now, I guess, 'cause he's, he s- sent me a text today and said, uh, "What do you think about doing a River West social ride next spring that would be like a weekly thing?"
• 18:23
Like, seem, sounds like a good idea to me. Right. Some of the, some of the rides that kinda had been happening seem to have tapered a little bit.
• 18:31
Uh, I'm not sure what the best night would be, you know, if there's still a Tuesday night ride or a Wheelie Wednesday or whatever, but I like the idea. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And he's- But maybe s-...
• 18:39
kinda just looking for b- looking for ideas, maybe brainstorm a little bit if there's something like, well, we could just go to bars around River West, I guess.
• 18:48
[laughs] You know, it's like there's plenty of 'em, but, you know. But that's kinda what everybody does anyway. Right.
• 18:53
So what, what else might kind of fit in and, and be fun and at least one maybe non-alcoholic stop per ride possibly? I don't know. That's my idea. Right on. Yeah. You could just go to the- Like the Annie- Go to-...
• 19:06
Eddie pie rides. Yeah, go to the bookstore. Go to the, you know, go to the jazz estate gallery thingy. Jazz, what's it called? Jazz- Jazz Gallery. Jazz Gallery of... Yeah. Oh, you mean on, uh- Center Street...
• 19:19
Center, yep. There's plenty of businesses- Oh, yeah... in River West that are not- The Falcon... not all... Oh yeah, the Ball. That would be a good place to- They do-... either start or end. They do a Tuesday swing,
• 19:32
swing dancing. Swing- Really? Is that, is that the same group of cats that used to be up at the old Shorewood Post, do you think? No, it's all greasy- [laughs]... like Hustler and Larry Flynt-y.
• 19:41
No, uh, yeah, it's like swing dancing. [laughs] [laughs] Oh, boy. Oh, boy. Uh, you know what's coming up? 'Cause I thought about it as I said it, and I was like, well- Okay, we, we talked-... swing dancing, yes.
• 19:54
The swing dancing. We talked winter party. You know what's coming up right after that, on the Saturday after the winter party, is Global Fat Bike Day/Santa Rampage, already coming up here in a couple weeks.
• 20:05
Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. I'll just ride my fat bike on Santa day, maybe. Yeah. It's, uh, there's a bunch of listings- That's how I split the difference...
• 20:14
on, if you go to the show notes, there's a bunch of listings of places around. There's a lot of them in Wisconsin that are doing, there's Stevens Point and Eau Claire and, you know, Milwaukee and Madison.
• 20:24
Pe- lots of places doing their own version of the Santa Rampage, which I assume has some fat bike angle. Mm-hmm. I don't know if I mentioned this before.
• 20:33
I know I s- was thinking about it, but I don't know if the words came out of my mouth. Can you hear the words [laughs] coming out of my mouth? Um- [laughs]...
• 20:40
so a, a guy picked up some, some wheels today, and, uh, his, uh, girlfriend or partner picked them up for him, and she works for the Bike Fed, and is stationed down at the Wheel & Sprocket on Beecher Street- Sprocket...
• 20:53
with, with access to all that that entails of people who run, own, and/or work at that place. And there was, uh, there was some hubbub, bub, about Huge Ass
• 21:06
being like it's come, it's 10, it's been 10 years now, for criminy's. That's- But- Yeah... is it, with no snow, is it still a thing? It's actually part of my notes here w- Yeah...
• 21:17
before I even talked to her about that, was like, what about moving Global Fat Bike Day to- North... like January or February- Yeah... when we may have a better chance of snow? That's what make, yeah.
• 21:27
Um- Definitely makes sense. At least in a good chunk of the United States 'merica. I don't know about- Yeah...
• 21:33
overseas, how they're, how they're dealing with these, uh- I mean, Huge Ass, at this point, just kinda seems like almost like cyclocross. Or- On fatties... for mountain bikes on m- But on-...
• 21:43
mountain biking on fat bikes or-... fat schlaggins and flag and hammer schingies. There is that element, of course. But yeah, I mean- In order to be... I know, I'm getting in the Swedish chef there.
• 21:52
[laughs] But that's all the, you know. I think it's, you crushed- I, I have a shrinking, I have a shrinking- Oh...
• 21:58
and shrinking more percentage of my German heritage the more I'm, people are doing interest, Ancestry.com and whatever. That Turbo Reaper- It's all the French-... is tasty beer... and the Luxembourgers, man.
• 22:08
It's the Luxembourgers. I am a Luxembourger. Yep. By the way. Aren't you, too, somewhat? Yep. I'm- Yep, yep. He- No, no, no. Officially. Oh, you- Do you, do you have a- No... passport? No. No, no. Okay.
• 22:16
But I mean- Passport... in the lineage. I can move. So does he have to whack you to get to the- He's gonna have to like-... thorn?... do something. The, the, the, the, the thro- The throne?... thro- the thorn?
• 22:25
The throne. Throne. I think we're far enough apart- [laughs]... that he's gotta start all over again. [laughs] Unless you got Bermish. Do you got Grandpa Bermish on your side? Do I have Bermish?
• 22:35
We're related, by the way. [laughs] Does it show? How, how many cousins away? Does it sound show? [laughs] We're cousins. Yeah. I don't know. I mean, it's complicated. We're not inbred.
• 22:49
His, his grandma- So we're not like [laughs]... his grandma and my grandma were cousins, and- And my grandma [laughs]...
• 22:54
and their brother, their husbands were cousins, so it was like a double cousin wedding, cousin, cousin, cousin. [laughs] It's like- Not inbreeding, though. Just- Well, people-... far enough away...
• 23:06
people say your mom is your cousin, and your, you know, y- you could, your sister. Yeah. It's, everybody's your cousin. Sweet. It's Ame- it's w- Wisconsin, we- [laughs]... we're allowed to do this. Exactly.
• 23:17
You know, I looked at, looked this up. I heard that we could marry our first cousin in Wisconsin. And, and- I was like, "That's disgusting."... until what year? You still can. Oh, okay.
• 23:27
[laughs] Today, you can marry your first cousin as long as she is over 50. What? So you can't have babies with your first cousin. Oh, okay. But you can marry 'em. Well, then that- You can hold out- That's a-...
• 23:38
for 50 years you can hold out of pure love, and then marry your first cousin. Huh. That's a weird- When you can't have a baby. That's a we- Isn't that weird? That is weird. A strangely thoughtful statute. [laughs] Yeah.
• 23:49
That would be for the- I mean, full of thought, like- That'd be only for the woman, right? I mean- 'Cause the guy can probably have babies until he's 85. Yeah, or maybe- Like Tony Randall or somebody like that.
• 23:58
[laughs] Tony Randall. He- Let's just go there. 85, right? [laughs] What the- [laughs] That was a, I- I mean- Well done. That was a v- fine, fine curve ball. [laughs] I was not expecting it. Good, good on him.
• 24:09
[laughs] Good on him. However, but, like, you have a kid, and now you, you... There's no way he's there past 100 Well, yeah, even if they're in, that would be the kid's only 15. What a way to bring a kid- Yeah...
• 24:20
into the- No. You think it was, like, an oops or... I can't speak to that. He was such an acrobat and such a sexual acrobat in the world. [laughs] Like, I kind of... I hate to say it, though.
• 24:33
Like, given who he was, uh, like, uh, his TV persona, I love that. Yeah. I love that. I was like, "What? Are you kidding?" Smag. Smag. [laughs] Yes. Yes, indeed.
• 24:47
Uh, okay, so here's something that I don't wanna forget before we get out of this, which is coming. Um, next week is Thanksgiving. That's the noise gate, by the way. Thanksgiving. Sorry. It goes k- k- k- k-.
• 25:03
It just, like, it'll cut in. Anyway- [laughs] Next week's Thanksgiving, so I'm thinking we should, uh... I'll, I'll...
• 25:08
We'll do the show the same night, but I'll post the show on Wednesday so people that are traveling can listen to the show- Del Satan... or watch us- Brilliant... on YouTube. Brilliant.
• 25:16
Because everybody's gonna be traveling apparently, except for us. I'm not. Well, I'm traveling to Brookfield. [laughs] I'm going to We- [laughs] I'm going to West Bend. Ooh, you're going far afield. Mm-hmm.
• 25:28
Don't they have to close you? Bernardo, what's your, what's your Spanx-giving plan? We're, we're, we're bringing, we're bringing family in from, uh, Appleton.
• 25:35
Uh, every year Alicia wants to, does a themed Thanksgiving, so this year is, uh, show tunes- [laughs]... which I hate, but I th- Show tunes? I, I 3D printed Emmy Awards and everybody... or Tony Awards. Huh.
• 25:48
Everybody gets a Tony Award. And- That's like a participant award, right? Yeah, yeah, right. Everybody gets one. Uh, um- Are they life-size? Yeah, they're real.
• 25:56
I looked it up and I, I made it the right thing, so, you know, we gotta paint the top silver, but- I thought you were gonna say they're all little Tony Burgers. [laughs] Do you 3D-print parts for the- [laughs]...
• 26:06
for the business? All the time. Yeah. It... Oh my God, it saves us thousands of dollars. Uh, like not even close. It, this to-... The printer was 1,500 bucks. We saved 5,000 this year. Right on. It's not even close.
• 26:21
And how big a thing can it make? Well, you know. I mean, uh- Are, are they-... 10 by 10... so do you have to- By 10... do 'em in pieces and then glue 'em together? So yeah. Yeah. We have...
• 26:31
Like something that's, like, too big we have to make in two parts, and I've learned how to... I used to make, like, fancy little clips that snap into each other. That, that sucks. I'm- Just make glue.
• 26:41
Just put some glue in there. Well, no, no. I do, uh, uh, like nut and bolt, and so I- Oh... I make a opening for a nut and bolt, and then you just squeeze it together and glue it. Nice. And it's... Now it's invincible.
• 26:52
Uh, a guy that's been on the show before, Mr. Andrew Zahn, uh, he of the RW24 planning committee, is, uh, 3D printing, uh, some... You know, he does it quite a bit.
• 27:02
And he made some kinda RC plane with it, and I'm curious. I gotta see if it actually flies because in my opinion, 'cause I've been doing RC forever, it was heavy. Speaking of RC, look at those little trucks right there.
• 27:16
Those are- Right... those are fun for blasting around. That's a sexy little number. It's a little- I saw that earlier... it's a little crawler. You can do some crawling with those things.
• 27:22
[imitating car engine] Um- Does it go up a wall? It doesn't quite do a wall right now, unless you had a winch maybe. Mike, do you remember when I gave you a, a Jeep like this, Mighty Mo?
• 27:32
It wasn't a Mini Mighty Mo, but it was a Mighty Mo, and you'd go vroom, vroom, vroom. Uh-huh. It had a flywheel in it- [laughs]... and it would go 70 miles an hour down the road. [laughs] Do you remember that?
• 27:40
And then you lost it. I remember that. I'm still holding that against you. [laughs] How old am I, 60? And how- Fuck, I'm holding it against you... is he five years younger than you are? Yeah, yeah. Eight years.
• 27:49
I'm still mad. Yeah. [laughs] How, how many years is that? That's, like, 50 years of rage. [laughs] Just built up for this moment. I told your mom. For this moment. I just told your mom at your wedding. I told your mom.
• 27:59
[laughs] I'm still mad at him. [laughs] By the way, if you haven't watched, uh, JK's nuptials on the porch at the old Morris mansion, uh, that's... What show was that? 279 or something? It's in- Yeah.
• 28:10
You can see the picture. Go check out- That was great... JK. It, it was the best wedding I've ever been to, I think. It was simple and beautiful. And- No, it was awesome... you know, came from a place of love, baby. Aw.
• 28:22
Yeah. Aw. The, so the place where Wendy and I got married isn't even there anymore. [laughs] It was, like... Well, it was Boaters on the River, which used to be a really- Oh. Oh, I remember... a really cool place. Yeah.
• 28:32
Yeah, yeah. And we did everything there. We didn't do the church. We did e- we did the ceremony there. Everything there. We didn't have to go anywhere.
• 28:37
And it was a, it's a, was a really nice place, but it's, it's- Yeah... gone now apparently. Yeah, that just came up recently of, uh, I don't know, things gone and whatever on one of the social things.
• 28:47
But my dad used to work at Vilda Park across the way. Oh, yeah. Was that a g- Now it's Mequon- Is that a golf course?... Golf Club or whatever. Golf course. Yeah, yeah. Da, da, da, da, da, da. But yeah.
• 28:57
And then, yeah, uh, my grandma, uh, Aunt Theresa, Aunt Tess, um, she would always, like, occasionally be like, "Oh, let's do a Easter," you know, something. You know, just get together quick.
• 29:12
And it's like, oh, yeah, ooh. Did you call her- Even as a little kid... did you call her Tess or Theresa? No, Grandma. Grandma. Yeah, right. It was Grandma. Of course, yeah. Grandma. Grandma.
• 29:20
She was Aunt Tess to me, but she would sneak me down and give me her homemade schnapps. Did you ever do that? [laughs] Oh, yeah. Holy crap, it had crystals all over the mouth. She's like, "Try a little bit of this."
• 29:29
It's like- And she's, like, this high- Yeah, she was, yeah... with her little headband. She was fully on it, yeah. [laughs] She's fully on it. Was that, was that what the schnapps do to you after 20? I don't know.
• 29:38
I was like, "Okay, I'm 13." I'm like... [laughs] You know, fucking, that was awesome. Yeah, schnapps are like... You don't really know you're drinking the alcohoosie there. But who makes that?
• 29:49
Like, do you know a- anybody that makes schnapps? No, I wouldn't even know- No. Right?... exactly how to make it. She made schnapps. Huh. Well, like, it's not like she had it. She made it. Sweet.
• 29:59
And [laughs] Uh, yeah, but she had the- Obviously. [laughs] Yeah, she had, like, the, she had, like, the p- the cedar pickling rooms or- [laughs] Right, right, right... or curing rooms- Right... or whatever. Like,
• 30:08
for being a weird, normal-looking basement in Menomonee Falls- [laughs]... it had a lot of weird shit in the basement. Yeah. Interesting. [laughs] People don't sit in their house this much anymore. Right...
• 30:21
yeah, I don't know. My, my grandfather had the, had the big bar. He was an Elk. He had his buddies over. He had big, huge family things, and it was in a room not much bigger than this studio, I wouldn't think.
• 30:32
And there would be, like, 30 people in there. [laughs] In the, in the basement of his house on Oakland Avenue with a fireplace down there, and the flagstone, and the bar, and the- Oh, god... yeah. What's wrong with that?
• 30:41
No, no. I love that. It was, it was- No, we end... Like, uh, Barb's kid and my, it, we ended up wrestling on what we thought was, like, padding, ended up being, uh, insulation. [laughs] Was it asbestos?
• 30:54
Oh, I don't know what it was. But it hurt. Oh, yeah, yeah. [laughs] So we had to take turns getting, like, scrubbed down in Benadryl and taking baths.
• 31:02
[laughs] Or wh- what, what was it, whatever that pink shit was that, like, got all the crap out of you? Yeah, Owens Corning? I don't know. I don't know. Pink, pink fiberglass?
• 31:10
[laughs] It's just explaining a lot of what- No, you know what? You know what? [laughs] What's going on. I got, I got the scratch going here now. Oh, Margie. [laughs] Man.
• 31:18
Um, you guys been following the, you know, the sit-down restaurants like, uh, Red Lobster and Applebee's, and all these places are losing... They're losing restaurants all over the place.
• 31:29
I think Red Lobster even went bankrupt. They're on their way back out now, and their new, their new president is like, "We're bringing back hush puppies." That's all it takes. I, I didn't even... I had to...
• 31:40
No way, I didn't even know what a hush puppy was. It's like batter dropped into f- Yeah... into oil. It's fried batter. It's fried batter. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, no, that's a thing. I... Yeah. Yeah.
• 31:50
Apparently that's a big thing- No, it's a-... in, in the N- in the Carolinas and whatnot. Jingle King, yeah. Jingle King's- That's, I get... Maybe that's why I know it. I went to- Yeah...
• 31:56
I was, I, I lived in Chapel Hill, well, Durham for a long time, so. It's a college town. Chapel Hill is Durham, is... Duke is in Durham, but they don't like Durham. Duke has a wall around themselves. Oh.
• 32:08
It's a triangle of- Right? And th- There's, like, a weird- Durham is another area... it's a weird triangle of hatred... however, Durham's kickass. Uh, in- Yeah... in the last 20 years it's exploded. It, it's great.
• 32:20
So did Asheville until it didn't. Right. Sad, sad days in Asheville. All right, everybody. Did I ever tell you, did I tell you about Marshall, where our studio is? Uh- The river... oh, yeah.
• 32:33
It w- uh, I think you told us, but you didn't tell us on the show, did ya? I guess I didn't tell you guys, sorry.
• 32:37
'Cause you guys were, you were in Asheville for the- Yeah, so the studio is on a island in the French Broad in Marshall, North Carolina.
• 32:44
On Monday, the French Broad was a foot and a half deep, and on Thursday it was 20 feet deep. The- Jesus. Wow. Wow. Like, it, we w- our studio's on the second floor.
• 32:55
The entire first floor of the school was destroyed, and the water went right up to the floorboards of the studio. If you look at our studio, nothing happened. Wow.
• 33:05
But the whole building is filled with silt and, and just- Is, is it, is it still sound, the building? Yeah. Well, I don't know. It's- I guess so... it, it's brick or- I mean, these, they've had, they have floods.
• 33:15
You know, you live on a river, you expect a flood. Right. Yeah. Right? A couple, two or three feet here and there. Right. [laughs] But 20. [laughs] The, they lost whole cities. Yeah. Oh, shit.
• 33:23
Whole cities got washed away. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was crazy. Well, we've talked about our, uh, some people we know in Boone, which is 15 miles away- Mm-hmm... or something maybe. Mm-hmm.
• 33:32
I don't know if it's upstream probably. But it's up a little bit. Yeah. But they had, I don't know, eight feet of water come through and destroy... It's powder coating. She's a bike builder. Right. Uh, a, a lot of stuff.
• 33:42
They lost a lot of stuff, and even washed out- Oh, that's too bad... it washed out the bridge that you had to go over to get to their house and stuff like that.
• 33:49
And through the help of the bike community and many other people, I'm sure, they have gotten back on their feet more quickly than they planned, so that's a good thing.
• 33:58
That, that whole w- that whole community, like, bandied together like you wouldn't believe. Their, everybody was on top of it. They had a fashion show, and there was, everybody was wearing their cleanup gear.
• 34:09
[laughs] People are walking up in cleanup gear, and it was, it was pretty hilarious. With the big old rubber boots on. Yeah, right? Yeah, yeah. Right. Right on. Cool.
• 34:16
Well, good pull there, JK, with the DiNardo guest today. Oh, I, I was walking around- That's called pro-... I was walking- It's called producing. It's all timing. Yeah, yeah. The world- Yeah...
• 34:26
the, the universe provideth. [laughs] Uh, uh, just out of curiosity, is the- Thank you, Mark... is DiNardo a completely unique name, or are there other DiNardos in the world?
• 34:34
Not with my spelling, but there's another DiNardo who's almost exactly my age, and it's Ornette Coleman's son. Wow, okay. The drummer, Denardo Coleman. Does he ha- does he have the apostrophe or no apostrophe? No, D-E.
• 34:47
Aha. So you're- Ah... you're, you're Deapostrophe. I'm the apostrophe. Yeah. I'm the crux of the biscuit. Right, right. Okay. Or %$39 or whatever that is in- [laughs]... in Mike's world. What the fuck?
• 34:59
W- what happened there? Like, we had punch cards in the '30s, and that's it. You can't have any special symbols in... You can't have apostrophes, you can't have hyphens, you can't have quotes, 'cause that's all special.
• 35:14
And then they use that for everything else. I, uh, never mind. [laughs] Typewriter got clever. Yeah. Right? All right. Everything was better. All right, DiNardo, thanks for being on the show. Thank you. I'm out of here.
• 35:26
Uh. [laughs] We'll do this again next week. Uh, maybe Tony'll be back, I hope, hopefully. And, uh- Get well, Tony... good on ya. Get well, Tony. Have some soup. Put a hot towel on your head.
• 35:42
