- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's a Thursday, it's the 30th
- 0:16of October and today's date is an absolute banger.
- 0:21This is one of my favourite stories.
- 0:23On this day, October 30th in 1938, they decided to update the
- 0:29novel The War of the Worlds into this live radio play.
- 0:33And the way that programming worked, most of the audience
- 0:36missed the introduction where they told the audience that it
- 0:40was just a work of fiction. And when most people, most
- 0:43Americans tuned in, they tuned in to this news broadcast of
- 0:46aliens taking over and it caused mass hysteria.
- 0:50Thousands of people fled their homes and when the authorities
- 0:53tried to penalise them for causing this havoc, well they've
- 0:57done nothing wrong. No law against.
- 0:59Really well produced radio plays with lots of extras in the
- 1:03studio screaming and making it sound very real.
- 1:05Amazing that was 1938, but here we are in 2025 and we are going
- 1:12back in time to hear the words captured 2000 years ago by Jesus
- 1:18brother, inspired by the Holy Spirit writing to the Jews
- 1:22scattered around the world about how they can live to follow
- 1:26Jesus. So let us buckle up, this is
- 1:29real. No fake radio play here.
- 1:32These are the words of our God speaking to us.
- 1:34Holy Spirit, lead us, shape us by your words.
- 1:41Let's do it friends. Let's read together James
- 1:43chapter 2. My dear brothers and sisters,
- 1:56how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus
- 1:59Christ if you favour some people over others?
- 2:02For example, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed
- 2:06in fancy clothes and expensive jewellery, and another comes in
- 2:10who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes.
- 2:13If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich
- 2:16person, but you say to the poor, 1 you can stand over there or
- 2:20else sit on the floor. Well, doesn't this
- 2:24discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil
- 2:28motives? Listen to me, dear brothers and
- 2:31sisters, Hasn't God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in
- 2:36faith? Aren't they the ones who will
- 2:39inherit the Kingdom He promised to those who love him?
- 2:43But you dishonour the poor. Isn't it the rich who oppress
- 2:47you and drag you into court? Aren't they the ones who slander
- 2:51Jesus Christ, whose noble name you bear?
- 2:55Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in
- 3:00the Scriptures. Love your neighbour as yourself.
- 3:04But if you favour some people over others, you were committing
- 3:07a sin. You were guilty of breaking the
- 3:10law. For the person who keeps all of
- 3:13the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all
- 3:17of God's laws. For the same God who said you
- 3:22must not commit adultery also said you must not murder.
- 3:27So if you murder someone but do not commit adultery, you have
- 3:30still broken the law. So whatever you say, or whatever
- 3:34you do, remember that you will be judged by the law that sets
- 3:39you free. There will be no mercy for those
- 3:42who have not shown mercy to others.
- 3:44But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when He
- 3:48judges you. What good is it, Dear brothers
- 3:52and sisters, if you say you have faith but don't show by your
- 3:57actions? Can that kind of faith save
- 3:59anyone? Suppose you see a brother or
- 4:02sister who has no food or clothing, and you say goodbye
- 4:06and have a good day, stay warm and eat well, but then you don't
- 4:11give that person any food or clothing.
- 4:13What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself
- 4:18isn't enough. Unless it produces good deeds,
- 4:22it is dead and useless. Now someone may argue some
- 4:27people have faith, others have good deeds.
- 4:30But I say, how can you show me your faith if you don't have
- 4:34good deeds? I will show you my faith by my
- 4:37good deeds. You say you have faith, for you
- 4:42believe that there is one God good for you.
- 4:45Even the demons believe this and they tremble in terror.
- 4:49How foolish. Can't you see that faith without
- 4:52good deeds is useless? Don't you remember that our
- 4:56ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions
- 5:01when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
- 5:04You see, his faith and his actions worked together.
- 5:08His actions made his faith complete.
- 5:11And so it happened just as the scriptures say.
- 5:15Abraham believed God and God counted him as righteous because
- 5:19of his faith. He was even called the friend of
- 5:23God. So you see, we are shown to be
- 5:26right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.
- 5:32Rahab the prostitute is another example.
- 5:35She was shown to be right with God by her actions when she hid
- 5:39those messengers and sent them safely away by a different Rd.
- 5:43Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead
- 5:49without good works. Jesus here we are, your
- 6:01disciples, your children, your family, and we do not want our
- 6:06faith to be a shallow, tokenistic or ineffective faith.
- 6:10We want our faith to move mountains, to shape our
- 6:15behaviour, to make us move through the world in a way that
- 6:19stops people in their tracks and causes them to ask what is up
- 6:23with that person. How can they love the way they
- 6:26do? And the only way they're going
- 6:28to do that is if they see our actions shaped by our faith.
- 6:33Holy Spirit, change us. May the fruits that you grow in
- 6:40US shape us to be your Kingdom people saved by your sacrificial
- 6:46death, Jesus, claimed by the residents of the Holy Spirit
- 6:51within us, and transformed by that continuing work every day.
- 6:58We are yours and we love you, and we pray all of this in your
- 7:01name, Jesus, Amen.
