- 0:00Speaker 1: Well with shift gears from covering women's basketball. The first
- 0:03Speaker 1: hour or two talking with Dan Hurley and yukon men's
- 0:06Speaker 1: basketball as we get set for the final two weeks
- 0:09Speaker 1: of the month of November that starts on Tuesday for
- 0:11Speaker 1: the Huskies against East Texas A and M. But Dan
- 0:15Speaker 1: last couple of games or three games into the season
- 0:17Speaker 1: three to zero, ninety two, ninety and ninety points offensively,
- 0:21Speaker 1: but getting there's been a little interesting the first three games.
- 0:25Speaker 1: The progression and some of the good things you saw
- 0:28Speaker 1: coming up last Wednesday in the win over La Mooine.
- 0:32Speaker 1: After a bit of a slow start, it seems like
- 0:34Speaker 1: you guys are starting to get into a little bit
- 0:36Speaker 1: of a rhythm.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Yeah. I just think, Bob, we're.
- 0:41Speaker 3: You know, we're we've got so many new players and
- 0:45Speaker 3: we're relying on a number of younger players.
- 0:49Speaker 2: So I just think going into.
- 0:51Speaker 3: The year, you know, in this kind of really great
- 0:56Speaker 3: stretch that we've had, Yeah, the last two years, uh,
- 1:01Speaker 3: you know, we've we we've we've lost so many really
- 1:04Speaker 3: important players that, uh, you know, this is a group
- 1:08Speaker 3: that's gonna obviously have to improve a lot over the
- 1:12Speaker 3: course of the entire season. I don't know that we'll
- 1:14Speaker 3: ever get to a point where we're like a maintenance
- 1:17Speaker 3: phase where we're just you know, I just think that
- 1:20Speaker 3: we're we're a team that is so new and and
- 1:25Speaker 3: and is young in a lot of key spots and
- 1:28Speaker 3: uh just gonna be a work in progress and just
- 1:31Speaker 3: gonna have probably have to have a higher level of
- 1:33Speaker 3: patients than you know that I that I had, particularly
- 1:37Speaker 3: last year when we had such an older, veteran, well
- 1:40Speaker 3: rounded team.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Yeah, what did you see differently on Wednesday? Dan? Offensively? Again,
- 1:45Speaker 1: it was a bit of a slow start, miss some
- 1:47Speaker 1: open threes, good looks, they just didn't fall. But what
- 1:50Speaker 1: did you see differently, say offensively or even big picture
- 1:53Speaker 1: from when from Wednesday's game to what you saw against
- 1:55Speaker 1: New Hampshire.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I think well, number one, I think a positive
- 1:59Speaker 3: thing was we stuck to the script of the type
- 2:03Speaker 3: of shots we wanted. And it was our first game
- 2:07Speaker 3: in a couple of years, or it's the first game
- 2:10Speaker 3: that we've had since we really dived in on on
- 2:12Speaker 3: on on the analytics of the type of shots we
- 2:15Speaker 3: want to shoot, and we actually avoided taking any mid
- 2:18Speaker 3: range shots the entire game, so we literally took uh,
- 2:23Speaker 3: you know, took threes and and deep paint twos and
- 2:26Speaker 3: free throws, which is where we want to be.
- 2:29Speaker 2: You know, obviously we you know, we're high assists.
- 2:32Speaker 3: I think twenty four assists to seventernals, which is obviously
- 2:35Speaker 3: always a positive number. And I thought that, you know,
- 2:39Speaker 3: to start the game, we we got a lot of
- 2:42Speaker 3: good looks at threes.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Uh, you know, a lot of them just kind of
- 2:45Speaker 2: rimmed out on us.
- 2:46Speaker 3: But uh, it just looked more cohesive on offense and
- 2:50Speaker 3: uh and more efficient. Obviously the level of competition is
- 2:54Speaker 3: going to arise significantly. But this game, this type of
- 2:59Speaker 3: schedule I think is important, you know, for for for
- 3:03Speaker 3: this team. I think this team needed, uh an early
- 3:06Speaker 3: season schedule like this because we've got obviously a lot.
- 3:09Speaker 1: To work on, right in one more game with the
- 3:12Speaker 1: Texas A and M and then then you get some
- 3:14Speaker 1: toughies going out in MAUI. What about defensively coming in?
- 3:18Speaker 1: Lemoine runs a lot of good stuff. They had piled
- 3:20Speaker 1: up a lot of points per game in the eighty
- 3:21Speaker 1: eight points per game in their first couple of games,
- 3:24Speaker 1: holding the thirty five shooting the stuff that they ran.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Were you surprised at all when how well that things
- 3:29Speaker 1: went defensively for your team.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, you know, when we watched their game
- 3:33Speaker 3: versus Syracuse and and uh, you know, they're they're up eight,
- 3:37Speaker 3: uh you know, midway through the second half and and
- 3:41Speaker 3: have a chance to tie the game in the last possession.
- 3:43Speaker 3: I think you're you're you're looking at the game and
- 3:46Speaker 3: and uh yeah, and obviously it uh you know, it
- 3:49Speaker 3: was a little scary putting up eighty four points in
- 3:52Speaker 3: the Dome or what have you or whatever they ended
- 3:56Speaker 3: up with. But yeah, that they're you know, they're a
- 3:58Speaker 3: good offensive team.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Uh.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I think our defense has probably you know, been
- 4:04Speaker 3: better than I thought it would be at this point,
- 4:07Speaker 3: even though obviously we're not playing the best teams on
- 4:10Speaker 3: our schedule. But I think I've been encouraged, you know,
- 4:14Speaker 3: by being in the right spots and just the attention
- 4:19Speaker 3: to detail that the group takes. Obviously, Kamani and Luke
- 4:23Speaker 3: do a great job with the scouts, and I think
- 4:25Speaker 3: the preparation, you know, we're not disrespectful of our opponents,
- 4:28Speaker 3: like we prepare for Lemoyne and New Hampshire same way
- 4:33Speaker 3: we prepared for Purdue, And that helps.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Yeah, it certainly does. Alex off to a good start.
- 4:39Speaker 1: He's been super efficient shooting the basketball. He is what
- 4:43Speaker 1: twelve assists or thirteen assists, twelve blocks, I mean his
- 4:47Speaker 1: block effort so far. Yes, I know it's not the
- 4:49Speaker 1: biggest teams you've been playing, but he reminds me a
- 4:52Speaker 1: little bit not being the tallest guy on the floor,
- 4:54Speaker 1: kind of what Page did last year for the women's.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Yeah, well he's doing it.
- 4:58Speaker 3: And when you know, when he's being attacked in one
- 5:02Speaker 3: on ones, you know he's not you know, he's not
- 5:05Speaker 3: the center at the front of the rim Patrick Ewing
- 5:09Speaker 3: back in the day. You know, like this is like
- 5:11Speaker 3: you know, he's he's switching onto smaller guards. In the past,
- 5:15Speaker 3: you know, Alex uh you know, has had you know,
- 5:18Speaker 3: some trouble kind of keeping people in front of him.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Now he's keeping people in front of him and you know,
- 5:24Speaker 3: contesting their shot or blocking their shot.
- 5:26Speaker 2: He's just winning a lot of one on one battles.
- 5:29Speaker 3: And then you know he's you know, for what Alex
- 5:32Speaker 3: lacks with maybe off the chart athletic ability, he does
- 5:36Speaker 3: have length and obviously he's got a basketball brain thatworks overdrive,
- 5:42Speaker 3: so he's able to anticipate, uh, and react quicker than
- 5:46Speaker 3: most human beings.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Dan, did you sense that IQ when he first stepped
- 5:50Speaker 1: on campus.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I think watching him play and that he wasn't
- 5:56Speaker 3: always the type of player.
- 5:57Speaker 2: We went for.
- 5:57Speaker 3: I think, uh yeah, I think players like Alex I
- 6:03Speaker 3: would have maybe looked for more athleticism or a little
- 6:08Speaker 3: more sizzle with the maybe creativity or something with the basketball.
- 6:13Speaker 3: I mean, Alex was not a player that I generally
- 6:18Speaker 3: had recruited over the course of my career, but I
- 6:22Speaker 3: think we started to see a major need, especially as
- 6:26Speaker 3: like a positionless three four four three type of player
- 6:30Speaker 3: that could be a hub of your offense, a stretch
- 6:33Speaker 3: a stretch player, a mismatched player, and somebody that well
- 6:38Speaker 3: we knew we had to change our offense after those
- 6:41Speaker 3: first round flameouts in the instant A tournament. You know,
- 6:45Speaker 3: the way that you get better on offenses recruiting, you
- 6:48Speaker 3: know guys that are really good offensive players, that are
- 6:51Speaker 3: smart and work tirelessly on their game.
- 6:55Speaker 1: What about his leadership.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Getting better, Bob, And it's surprising and I think gets
- 7:01Speaker 3: you know, I'd say, when he got on campus, one
- 7:03Speaker 3: of the things that we were talking internally about is
- 7:07Speaker 3: he was so introverted when he got here to a
- 7:12Speaker 3: painful point where we were wondering if he would be
- 7:16Speaker 3: able to keep it together on game night or whether,
- 7:21Speaker 3: you know, whether he was had some type of quietness
- 7:26Speaker 3: to him that was a little bit scary when we
- 7:31Speaker 3: let the people into the building on game night. But
- 7:34Speaker 3: Alex has got this alter ego where he is this
- 7:38Speaker 3: kind of really quiet, laid back guy. But then when
- 7:41Speaker 3: the game starts, he's got an alter ego that he
- 7:44Speaker 3: switches to and his personality changes when he takes the
- 7:48Speaker 3: basketball court.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Good stuff.
- 7:51Speaker 1: More with Dan It's the U con men's Basketball Coaches
