- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is.
- 0:14Friday. Oh, it's Friday the 13th, did
- 0:17you realise that? Oh, just just realising that
- 0:20now. Friday the 13th, we are going to
- 0:22have a great day, irrespective of what Black Cats and ladders
- 0:26leaning against walls might do around us.
- 0:29It is a day that the Lord has made and we will rejoice and be
- 0:33glad in it. Yes, because it's Friday at the
- 0:35end of the week, and no matter what your week has looked like
- 0:38or your weekend looks like ahead, it is a moment to stop
- 0:41and read a Psalm together. And today, today we read Psalm
- 0:46144, which is one of these rare royal psalms.
- 0:50It's not a lament. It's not a Psalm of praise, It's
- 0:53a royal Psalm. And the royal psalms are all
- 0:56about the psalmist writing a Psalm as king, king of their
- 1:00country. And this Psalm is actually a
- 1:04prayer for National Safety. This is a Psalm where David
- 1:09prays that God would protect his nation and bless them with times
- 1:15of peace. Ah, yes, that sounds wonderful.
- 1:19So how about you and I put down the busyness of what's happening
- 1:22in our heads and our hearts and our days ahead and past and come
- 1:28before the God of the universe, our King, as we read a Psalm of
- 1:34David, Psalm 144. Praise the Lord, who is my rock.
- 1:50He trains my hand for war and gives my fingers skill for
- 1:55battle. He is my loving ally and my
- 2:00fortress, my tower of safety, my rescuer.
- 2:07He is my shield and I take refuge in him.
- 2:12He makes the nations submit to me.
- 2:17O Lord, what are human beings that you should notice them?
- 2:21Mere mortals that you should think about them, for they are
- 2:26like a breath of air. Their days are like a passing
- 2:31shadow. Open the heavens, Lord, and come
- 2:35down. Touch the mountains so they
- 2:39billow smoke. Hurl your lightning bolts and
- 2:43scatter your enemies. Shoot your arrows and confuse
- 2:48them. Reach down from heaven and
- 2:52rescue me. Rescue me from deep waters, from
- 2:57the power of my enemies. Their mouths are full of lies.
- 3:03They swear to tell the truth, but they lie instead.
- 3:09I will sing a new song to you, O God.
- 3:14I will sing your praises with A10 stringed harp for you grant
- 3:20victory to kings. You rescued your servant David
- 3:24from the fatal sword. Save me.
- 3:28Rescue me from the power of my enemies.
- 3:31Their mouths are full of lies. They swear to tell the truth,
- 3:37but they lie instead. May our sons flourish in their
- 3:42youth like well nurtured plants. May our daughters be like
- 3:48graceful pillars carved to beautify a palace.
- 3:53May our barns be filled with crops of every kind.
- 3:59May the flocks of our fields multiply by the thousands, even
- 4:0310s of thousands. And may our oxen be loaded down
- 4:09with produce. May there be no enemy breaking
- 4:14through our walls, no going into captivity, no cries of alarm in
- 4:21our town squares. Yes, joyful are those who live
- 4:26like this. Joyful indeed are those whose
- 4:31God is the Lord our Lord. Let us buck the trend of wanting
- 4:47more, more and more with gratitude.
- 4:51With gratitude to you and all your provisions that you just
- 4:57pour so generously all through our lives.
- 5:02Thank you for all that you give us, for your love, your
- 5:06provision and your presence and all of those things that you
- 5:12give us that punctuate our days with moments of joy and pleasure
- 5:18and fulfilment. We are your children and it is
- 5:23in you that we find our true vocation and the only way that
- 5:28we'll nurture and satisfy our soul.
- 5:33Thank you that for so many generations you have been
- 5:37blessing your people and that we now, here today, stand in your
- 5:43blessing and your provision. Ah, we thank you so much, our
- 5:49loving, caring God, and we pray all these things in the saving
- 5:55name of your Son Jesus, Amen.
