- 0:01Yeah, Mississippi State obviously played
- 0:03probably their best offensive game of
- 0:05the year against Miss the other night.
- 0:07Um, you know, made double digit threes
- 0:11for the third time in conference play
- 0:12and they're 3 and 0 when they do that.
- 0:15So, uh, you know, had a great, um,
- 0:18overall game offensively and
- 0:20defensively. Had a lot of step up from a
- 0:22lot of the guys. Um, so they're, you
- 0:25know, playing well right now and they're
- 0:26playing with a lot of confidence and,
- 0:28uh, you know, that's when this team's
- 0:29good. So, um, you know, Hubard obviously
- 0:32is again just another great guard, um,
- 0:36that, you know, we're going against one
- 0:37of the best probably the best scoring
- 0:39point guard in our league. And, um, you
- 0:42know, he's probably licking his chops
- 0:43right now after, you know, some of the
- 0:45performances some of the guards have had
- 0:46against us as of late. So, our guys got
- 0:48to really step up and um you know, be
- 0:51excited about that matchup because uh
- 0:53you know, he's he's an elite uh scoring
- 0:55point guard and um so yeah um another
- 1:00great test on the road. So, take any
- 1:03questions.
- 1:07>> Awesome.
- 1:15Stephen, just obligatory checkup on
- 1:18Keshan Hall whether you expect him to to
- 1:20play on Wednesday.
- 1:22>> Yeah, had a great practice yesterday and
- 1:23he's out there getting shots right now.
- 1:25So, hope for another great practice
- 1:26today.
- 1:28>> You talk about Hubard and just kind of
- 1:30the challenge that that he faced. He's
- 1:32got battoint game. Just what do you have
- 1:35to do against a guy that may shoot it
- 1:37every single time he touches the ball
- 1:38and he they run so much stuff through
- 1:40him?
- 1:40>> Yeah. No, he's he's a handful. um you
- 1:44know, with with how much we switch, you
- 1:45know, it's going to be relying on
- 1:47everybody to be able to uh you know, sit
- 1:49down and guard, but you know, if you try
- 1:52and take away his three ball, he drives
- 1:53right around you and can get to the rim
- 1:55and then get to the foul line. And if
- 1:56you back up on him too much, you know,
- 1:57he's got the ability to elevate over the
- 2:00top and and knock down shots at a really
- 2:02high level. So, he just he does a lot of
- 2:04really good things and uh you know, he's
- 2:06just really really difficult to contain
- 2:09and uh you know, back-to-back 30-point
- 2:12games. Um, you know, he's just
- 2:16really, really good offensive player and
- 2:18uh just presents a ton of challenges for
- 2:20our defense.
- 2:27>> Yeah, I mean, you mentioned the in your
- 2:29open about Mississippi State kind of
- 2:30having more confidence of late. Just you
- 2:33mentioned the three-point shooting. What
- 2:34are you guys going to have to do as a as
- 2:35a three-point defense in this game,
- 2:37especially after, you know, you just saw
- 2:39AUF in in that last game have a good
- 2:41performance? What are you guys going to
- 2:41have to improve on?
- 2:42>> Yeah, a lot of those were just bad
- 2:44closeouts, honestly. Um, you know, he
- 2:47hit three threes on our after we like on
- 2:51the under OB's when we got matched up
- 2:53and we closed out to him like we were in
- 2:55zone still and instead of like because
- 2:57we were supposed to go from zone to
- 2:58manto man and uh we closed out short on
- 3:02a you know great three-point shooter
- 3:04that already made multiple threes. So I
- 3:06I have no idea how that's possible. Um,
- 3:09so it it was more our closeouts than it
- 3:11was anything, you know, whereas
- 3:12Hubard's, you know, um, you know, if you
- 3:16don't, you know, if you don't close out
- 3:17with a high hand on him, he's going to
- 3:18knock shots down, and then if you aren't
- 3:19pressed up into the ball, you know, he's
- 3:20just going to be able to drive by you
- 3:22and get you off of them and get to a
- 3:24step back. So, our closeouts had a lot
- 3:27to do with um, his shooting in, you
- 3:30know, the Arkansas game. It was just
- 3:32lazy, bad closeouts. So, we got to fix
- 3:34that.
- 3:36Jeff,
- 3:37>> if you have a sense that this is going
- 3:38to be mean extra for Murf, any wisdom or
- 3:42guidance for him?
- 3:43>> Well, we're going to his favorite
- 3:44habachi restaurant tonight. So, I know
- 3:47he's really excited about that. Um,
- 3:50no. I mean, you know, um, one of the
- 3:54things that was really important to Murf
- 3:55before he came here was that he
- 3:57graduated from Mississippi State and,
- 3:59uh, he wanted to have that degree
- 4:00because,
- 4:02you know, he put a lot of time and
- 4:04effort into that program and, um, you
- 4:07know, it was important to get, you know,
- 4:09his diploma from there because he has a
- 4:11lot of love for that place and I credit
- 4:12him for that. uh he could have come here
- 4:14and taken a few extra courses to get his
- 4:16degree at Auburn, but uh you know it
- 4:18meant a lot to his mom and his grandma
- 4:20that he got his degree from there. So I
- 4:23know Murf's you know got a lot lot of
- 4:25love for you know coach Jans and
- 4:26everything that he and his staff did for
- 4:28Murf. Um and uh you know I know he's
- 4:32excited about you know the opportunity
- 4:33to go back and you know compete against
- 4:35some former teammates and uh obviously
- 4:37you know it'll I'm sure there will be
- 4:39some hostilities there. Um but you know
- 4:41he's he's excited about it.
- 4:45>> Hey coach, can you talk about how y'all
- 4:46are keeping that momentum up after this
- 4:48losing streak that's going on?
- 4:51>> Yeah, I think it's it's a good question.
- 4:53You got to kind of try and keep things
- 4:54in perspective. Um you know, you look at
- 4:57the last six teams that we've played
- 5:00in their previous five games, they're
- 5:03combined 30 and six, and two of those
- 5:05losses came to Auburn. So
- 5:09find me a tougher six game stretch than
- 5:11what we just faced, you know. Um,
- 5:15so that's one. And you know, you look at
- 5:18three of those games, right? It's a one
- 5:21or two possession game in the last two
- 5:23minutes. Um, and then obviously we play
- 5:25one of those games without our best
- 5:26player. So, you got to try and keep
- 5:29things in perspective as best you can.
- 5:31Also, while realizing there's some
- 5:33there's a lot of thing, not a lot of
- 5:34things, there's things that we got to do
- 5:35to be able to change some of those
- 5:37outcomes. Um, you can't panic. Um, which
- 5:42I know people are doing right now, which
- 5:43is fine. They can panic all they want.
- 5:45Um, we're going to stay consistent and
- 5:47locked in on what we do because what we
- 5:49do works and it's shown to work. like
- 5:52had a quote the other day I saw that I
- 5:54thought was really good and I thought
- 5:56was really relevant to our guys
- 5:59um as far as like just belief
- 6:03it um belief stems from experience
- 6:06reinforced by evidence.
- 6:08So you know the evidence is beating
- 6:11Texas, beating Florida, beating
- 6:14Arkansas, beating NC State, beating St.
- 6:16John's, you know. Um, so we've shown
- 6:21what we're capable of doing. Um,
- 6:24so that's where my belief comes from,
- 6:26you know, knowing that our guys are
- 6:27capable when they're at their best to,
- 6:30you know, go win the games. Um, we
- 6:31played six really good teams. We played
- 6:33six NCAA tournament teams. We played six
- 6:35teams in the top six in our league. We
- 6:37went two and four in those games and we
- 6:38had opportunities to win three of the
- 6:40other ones. So, um, that's that's how
- 6:43you try that's how you keep momentum
- 6:44going or trying to keep positive
- 6:46momentum going is just, you know, trying
- 6:48to recognize that, you know, while we
- 6:50want to win all those games, we went
- 6:52through a tough stretch and, uh, you
- 6:54know, we're doing a lot of the we're
- 6:56doing a lot of the right things, but,
- 6:58you know, none of that means it doesn't
- 7:00mean anything if we don't learn from it
- 7:01and and grow from it and try and be
- 7:03better for it and, uh, you know, take
- 7:06the things that we learned in that six
- 7:07game stretch and try and apply them, you
- 7:10you know, against a really good
- 7:11Mississippi State team.
- 7:13>> Stephen, you mentioned a week or so ago
- 7:15just uh breaking down all the the threes
- 7:17that opponents have taken and made and
- 7:19trying to find a pattern or anything
- 7:21that any anything popped up that really,
- 7:24you know, jumps out at you on that?
- 7:26>> Yeah, I think it's just um it it it's
- 7:30different each game. Um the last game
- 7:33was just bad closeouts. Like that was
- 7:35really disappointing because we hadn't
- 7:36really had that in the previous games.
- 7:38It was, you know,
- 7:40bad help. Um but I would rather give up
- 7:43threes off bad help than give off threes
- 7:45on just lazy closeouts. So um you know
- 7:48each game's going to be different. Um
- 7:51but you know we we got to do a better
- 7:53job first off stopping the ball and we
- 7:55didn't do a good job of that against
- 7:56Arkansas. Um Auff was way too
- 7:58comfortable and you know he hasn't made
- 8:00more than four threes all year. made
- 8:02seven against us and uh you know it's
- 8:04it's a six-point game or a four-point
- 8:06game with like six or seven minutes left
- 8:08and um you know that makes a huge
- 8:11difference in games like that. So first
- 8:14off we got to do a better job in our
- 8:15closeouts of not allowing just you know
- 8:18stand still threes. Um if we do that you
- 8:22know that at least gives us an
- 8:23opportunity to defend the other ones.
- 8:27We talked about after the game on
- 8:28Saturday night, but t more on Tahad just
- 8:30when he's playing offense like this and
- 8:32you guys can, you know, go down the
- 8:34stretch with with some momentum. I mean,
- 8:36how big is that for y'all on offense
- 8:37when he's performing like it's not just
- 8:39shooting the ball better, but you know,
- 8:40getting downhill and creating?
- 8:41>> Yeah, it's been great. I mean, Tahad
- 8:44has, you know, played a lot better
- 8:45offensively the last three games. And
- 8:47man, I like I thought about this the
- 8:49other day. I haven't given him enough
- 8:50credit this year for just a lot of the
- 8:52things that he's done. um because he's
- 8:54he's one of he's you know our best
- 8:56player, our best returning player, our
- 8:57only returning player and um you know we
- 9:00expect so much out of him that you know
- 9:02I haven't given him enough credit for
- 9:04what he's had to go through this year
- 9:05and uh he's been great on and off the
- 9:07floor the last three or four games and
- 9:09it's great to see you know his offense
- 9:11and the confidence that he's having. I
- 9:13want to say he has like 21 assists in
- 9:14the last three games which is
- 9:16phenomenal. He's been great. So, um, you
- 9:18know, I texted his dad and his agent
- 9:20yesterday and, you know, they got
- 9:22nervous when I texted him. I was like, I
- 9:23got I got to do a better job of giving
- 9:25you guys more good stuff because he's
- 9:26there's so much good with Tahad. He's
- 9:28been a great teammate. Um, trying to be
- 9:30a better leader on the floor. So, you
- 9:32know, if he can keep this up, you know,
- 9:35um it's going to bode well for us as,
- 9:37you know, as we come down the stretch
- 9:39here. Um, so he's starting to play well
- 9:41at the right time and, um, you know, um,
- 9:45if the rest of us can, you know,
- 9:46continue to
- 9:49keep growing and, uh, stay consistent
- 9:51and stay bought in, uh, like they have
- 9:53been, we'll we'll be in a good spot.
- 9:58>> And then, you know, Elijah got off to a
- 10:00rough start against Arkansas, but he hit
- 10:01some shots there in the second half. Did
- 10:03you kind of see him maybe, you know,
- 10:04maybe a little spark there towards the
- 10:06end of the game with with him
- 10:07offensively? Yeah, I mean it was good to
- 10:09see him knock down a few shots, but he
- 10:11was just way too tentative in the first
- 10:1230 minutes. Like he was just way too in
- 10:14between on everything he did offensively
- 10:16and defensively. And for him to be uh an
- 10:19effective player, he's just got to just
- 10:21be 100% committed to whatever he's doing
- 10:23in that moment, whether it's driving the
- 10:25ball to the basket or taking an open
- 10:27shot or a close out or, you know, a
- 10:29rotation on defense. like he can't do
- 10:32anything halfway because when he does
- 10:33everything when he does things at 100%
- 10:35and full speed he's unbelievable and
- 10:37he's incredibly effective and I thought
- 10:38in the Arkansas game he was just a
- 10:40little too stagnant a little too caught
- 10:42in between decisions on what he was
- 10:45trying to do and for him to be effective
- 10:47he he can't do that so for him it's like
- 10:49you just got to be assertive man you
- 10:51just got to you know make your mind up
- 10:52and go do it because when you do do
- 10:54those things like you know there's not a
- 10:55lot of people that can compete with you
- 10:57in those situations so um you know, need
- 11:01need him to, you know, play well down
- 11:04the stretch and, you know, hopefully
- 11:05couple those threes late will give him
- 11:07some some confidence moving forward. I
- 11:09thought he had a couple great drives
- 11:10late in that game, too, in the second
- 11:11half. Just, you know, I just thought it
- 11:13just took 30 minutes for him to kind of
- 11:14get comfortable and he's got to get
- 11:15comfortable quicker in games in order to
- 11:17be effective.
- 11:19>> Anything else for coach?
- 11:21>> All right. Thanks guys.
