Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: A few questions about the plastic bag ban
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Remember the excitement, the pride at being first, the proclamations
- 0:05Speaker 1: of cleaning up our world and making it better for tomorrow.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I'm talking about the single plastic use bag band on
- 0:12Speaker 1: twenty eighteen, Remember that. A few salient points to note
- 0:16Speaker 1: this morning, sixty years on from when it was announced.
- 0:19Speaker 1: There's a report out this morning on plastics. The use
- 0:23Speaker 1: of plastic is expected to treble globally by twenty sixty,
- 0:27Speaker 1: most of it in Africa and Asia. Plastic waste will
- 0:31Speaker 1: also treble by twenty sixty. Half of it will end
- 0:35Speaker 1: up in the landfill. Less than a fifth of it
- 0:39Speaker 1: will be recycled. So well done, you know, our pack
- 0:43Speaker 1: and save efforts, We're really doing well for the world.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Who's profiting from this? That's the other thing I wonder.
- 0:50Speaker 1: I don't know how much supermarkets make every time I
- 0:53Speaker 1: forget my reusable plastic bags and I have to buy
- 0:56Speaker 1: the paper ones. But the price of the paper one
- 0:58Speaker 1: the other day that I paid was four cents, And
- 1:01Speaker 1: I can remember when they first started telling them, it
- 1:03Speaker 1: was like ten or twenty cents, So there's been a
- 1:05Speaker 1: bit of inflation going on since then. And now they've
- 1:09Speaker 1: got Christmas trees printed on them. How much extra is
- 1:13Speaker 1: that costing. I don't want a Christmas tree on my
- 1:17Speaker 1: paper bag, thank you very much. I want the paper
- 1:20Speaker 1: bag not to break just because I put some wet
- 1:22Speaker 1: milk in it, so annoying. In Australia, coson Wall was
- 1:27Speaker 1: apparently profit. This was after they changed their rules profit
- 1:32Speaker 1: seventy one million dollars a year off their reusable bags.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Now I don't know what the number is here. I
- 1:40Speaker 1: have no idea, but I would have thought we'd be
- 1:45Speaker 1: asking ourselves a few questions. Do I want us going
- 1:47Speaker 1: back to plastic bags? No, I don't necessarily want us
- 1:50Speaker 1: going back to plastic bags, but could we please know
- 1:54Speaker 1: a couple of things. Where are our bags actually ending
- 1:59Speaker 1: up in the ocean in the first place or was
- 2:01Speaker 1: that other people's bags? You know? Were you throwing your
- 2:04Speaker 1: plastic bag in the ocean when you went and checked
- 2:06Speaker 1: the beach? Were the bags from Countdown, New Zealand? I
- 2:11Speaker 1: don't know. And how much are the supermarkets making out
- 2:15Speaker 1: of us for the bags that break before we get
- 2:17Speaker 1: them to the boot of our cars. Just a couple
- 2:20Speaker 1: of things I'd like to note. For more from early
- 2:23Speaker 1: edition with Ryan Bridge, listen live to news talks. It'd
