- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Hey there, welcome to the Modern Etsy Seller Podcast and What You're Wondering, the segment where I answer one specific Etsy question in under five minutes.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: I'm Melissa, a busy working mom with two profitable Etsy shops, and I help other busy women make money with Etsy and print on demand.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: In today's episode, I'm answering the question: do I really have to fill out my Etsy about section?
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: And my answer is yes, you should definitely fill it out.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: But don't let it slow you down.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: You don't need to spend nearly as much time on it as some sellers do.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: This is one of those parts of setting up an Etsy shop that people can really overthink.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: You know, feeling like they need this perfectly written story about why they started their business, what inspired them, who they are, how their products came to be.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: And then they spend way too long writing, tweaking, rewriting.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: When the reality is that most of your buyers are never even going to read it.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Some will, and for those buyers, your about section can help them learn a little bit more about you and the business they're buying from and ultimately build trust.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: But that's not the main reason I think you should fill it out.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: You should fill it out because Etsy wants to see a complete shop.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Etsy has continued to move toward looking at your shop more holistically.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Search isn't just about putting the right keywords in your title and tags anymore.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Etsy is also looking at the quality of the listing, the quality of the shop, your customer service, and the overall experience that you're creating for buyers.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: And Etsy has specifically said that having a completed about section can help with your visibility in search.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: So for me, this is one of those things where I'm going to give Etsy what Etsy is asking for.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: If they're telling me that a completed about section can be a positive signal for my shop, I'm going to complete it.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: But that does not mean I'm going to spend three hours writing it.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Keep it simple.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Tell people a little bit about you, what your shop's about, what you create.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Give them enough to understand that there's a real person and a real business behind the shop and then move on.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Keeping in mind that your about section does not need to be perfect, it just needs to be complete.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: So to summarize, fill it out.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Not because your about section is suddenly going to be the thing that makes someone buy your product, but because it's one more piece of creating a complete shop and giving Etsy the information it's telling us it wants to see.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: All right, that's it for today.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: But before you go, if you've been enjoying the podcast, I'd love it if you would take a minute to leave a rating and review.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: It helps more Etsy sellers find the show, and your feedback helps me create more of the episode you want to hear.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you next time.
