- 2:35Speaker 1: stuff out the way you all ready for tonight. Grace
- 2:41Speaker 1: is what we're talking about. Grace everyone. I feel that
- 2:47Speaker 1: that word is so powerful for the times that we
- 2:52Speaker 1: are in right now, and a lot of people don't
- 2:56Speaker 1: understand just a little of it can go such a
- 3:02Speaker 1: long way. So I have an author that is coming
- 3:05Speaker 1: up tonight that's gonna tell us about her book. Y'all.
- 3:10Speaker 1: You know I'm a cover girl, right. I loved us
- 3:14Speaker 1: book cover. It is so awesome. It is one of
- 3:18Speaker 1: those books that you give a family member, and for me,
- 3:23Speaker 1: it would be my granny if she was still here.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I can see her got this book and just putting
- 3:27Speaker 1: it by the Bible, just sitting up there just so
- 3:30Speaker 1: people can look at the cover. I am so so
- 3:34Speaker 1: honored to have miss Dorothy bullaware with us tonight. Come
- 3:40Speaker 1: on up, girly, come on up. Hello. I am I
- 3:50Speaker 1: am afraid. How are you?
- 3:52Speaker 2: I'm good. I'm happy to be here with you today.
- 3:55Speaker 2: That's how I am.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I am so honored to have you here tonight. But
- 4:01Speaker 1: before we go any further, tell us a little bit
- 4:04Speaker 1: about yourself.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Wow, just a little bit, huh.
- 4:09Speaker 3: I am a child of God and a recipient of
- 4:16Speaker 3: extravagant grace. I am a writer, a preacher. Everything ever
- 4:25Speaker 3: having to do with church I've done or am learning
- 4:28Speaker 3: to do. At this point. I have I have. Next week,
- 4:32Speaker 3: I will have been married fifty seven years and I
- 4:37Speaker 3: have Okay, I'll give you a minute.
- 4:40Speaker 1: A little pretty.
- 4:43Speaker 3: I have four children and you know, sons in love.
- 4:49Speaker 3: And I have five granddaughters and two great grandsons, and
- 4:54Speaker 3: my family is just the light of my life and
- 4:57Speaker 3: so I thank God for them every day. I'm a
- 5:01Speaker 3: journalist right now with Word in Black, and so people
- 5:05Speaker 3: can see my writing on that website. It is a
- 5:09Speaker 3: black owned press company and our work is strictly digital.
- 5:15Speaker 2: And that's a little bit.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Word in black, y'all. Remember that. Yeah, no test to replay.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I'm a do So what made you want to become
- 5:30Speaker 1: an author?
- 5:32Speaker 3: I have absolutely no idea. I've always been a writer.
- 5:38Speaker 3: People have always complimented me on my writing, and friends
- 5:42Speaker 3: have said to me, you need to write a book.
- 5:45Speaker 3: I did not do that until after I retired. The
- 5:49Speaker 3: first time I was writing and editing for the Afro
- 5:54Speaker 3: American newspaper I hope you know about that oldest continuously
- 6:02Speaker 3: I reading family owned black newspaper in the country, yes,
- 6:07Speaker 3: one hundred and thirty three years. So I worked for
- 6:10Speaker 3: them for a long time. And when I retired the
- 6:13Speaker 3: first time, the Lord started to tell me about writing
- 6:17Speaker 3: a book. Because it wasn't ever anything that I ever said.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I wanted to do.
- 6:22Speaker 3: I love to read books, but I never even thought
- 6:24Speaker 3: about writing books except for what my friend said to me.
- 6:29Speaker 3: So that's what I did. When I retired. I wrote
- 6:32Speaker 3: my first book and I was sixty five years old.
- 6:37Speaker 3: So it's never too late.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Now. See hold up, you are not y'all. Y'all need
- 6:48Speaker 1: to get that melani in your system. You see this
- 6:50Speaker 1: beauty right here? Do you see this beauty that is
- 6:53Speaker 1: on the screen. Get the melanin in your.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Stop because I wouldn't have thought then, Well, if I've
- 7:01Speaker 3: been married fifty seven years, you know I can't be
- 7:04Speaker 3: but so young.
- 7:08Speaker 1: You right? Okay, See I kind of miss math class.
- 7:13Speaker 1: You should see me helping my daughter with her math.
- 7:15Speaker 3: That's me.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I just put it on the paper. The teacher'll tell you.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Yeah. But I mean I didn't start writing.
- 7:25Speaker 3: I mean I wrote professionally as a journalist, but I
- 7:27Speaker 3: didn't start writing books until I was sixty five.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Oh my god, So how did it feel to have
- 7:34Speaker 1: that first book in your hand? Once you published?
- 7:38Speaker 3: So exciting, I'm telling you, And the Lord gave me
- 7:42Speaker 3: a particular pattern timetable in everything, and the first book
- 7:50Speaker 3: I had published by a Vanity Publishing company, and when
- 7:55Speaker 3: I looked at the services they offered, I realized, because
- 7:58Speaker 3: of my experience as a writer and editor, a lot
- 8:00Speaker 3: of those things I could do myself. So when I
- 8:04Speaker 3: did the second book, I published it myself on KDP
- 8:09Speaker 3: on Kendle Direct Publishing, and that's what I've been doing
- 8:12Speaker 3: ever since then.
- 8:14Speaker 1: So how many books do you have out right now?
- 8:17Speaker 3: I think I have eleven. Oh yeah, I think I
- 8:21Speaker 3: have eleven. Now those are the ones that I have
- 8:23Speaker 3: written myself. I have some other books that I have
- 8:26Speaker 3: curated where other people have written chapters in the book,
- 8:31Speaker 3: so I don't take credit for those, but I have
- 8:33Speaker 3: eleven that I've written totally myself.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Awesome. So how is being a journalist help you with
- 8:44Speaker 1: your writing?
- 8:49Speaker 3: Being a journalist has exposed me to a lot of situations,
- 8:55Speaker 3: a lot of people. I have learned a lot having
- 9:00Speaker 3: been a writer for a long period of time. It
- 9:06Speaker 3: helps me with my writing to a degree because I'm
- 9:11Speaker 3: sort of a freestyle writer when I do my books,
- 9:15Speaker 3: and it's a different thing than when I'm doing articles,
- 9:19Speaker 3: you know, when I have to be concerned about format
- 9:22Speaker 3: and and all that kind of thing.
- 9:24Speaker 2: It's it's a really different thing.
- 9:26Speaker 3: So it's a whole different feeling when I'm doing work,
- 9:30Speaker 3: writing for work, and when I'm writing books.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Okay, so how does your family feel about you being
- 9:39Speaker 1: an author?
- 9:41Speaker 3: They were pretty exciting excited about it. When I did
- 9:46Speaker 3: my first book, my middle daughter was also doing a book,
- 9:49Speaker 3: so we pretty much published at the same time.
- 9:52Speaker 2: So that was that was in witing.
- 9:54Speaker 3: And then this year one of the books I did
- 9:59Speaker 3: was published simul taneously with my other daughter and her daughter,
- 10:03Speaker 3: so we had three generations publishing in December together.
- 10:08Speaker 1: But that is awesome.
- 10:11Speaker 3: I try to stay ahead of the game and you know,
- 10:13Speaker 3: keep them encouraged all the time. And my friends too.
- 10:18Speaker 3: It's like, you can still do it. Whatever it is
- 10:20Speaker 3: you want to do, you can still do it, and
- 10:22Speaker 3: you can always try something new. It's no need to
- 10:26Speaker 3: sit down and be old. Anybody could do that.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Truly, anybody can do that. So what is what is
- 10:38Speaker 1: your writing style? If you had to place yourself in
- 10:42Speaker 1: a box, and I know a lot of people do
- 10:44Speaker 1: not like to be placed in a box and I
- 10:46Speaker 1: hate people in the box. But if you were to
- 10:49Speaker 1: be placed in this box and you have to do
- 10:53Speaker 1: a genre style for your writing, which genre would it be?
- 10:59Speaker 1: And why did you use that one?
- 11:01Speaker 3: Well, it's it's nonfiction, okay, inspirational. Oh, and I call
- 11:10Speaker 3: it conversational because when I'm writing, I feel like I'm
- 11:14Speaker 3: talking to a particular person, and so I just I
- 11:17Speaker 3: just my writing I think sounds like I'm having a
- 11:20Speaker 3: conversation with somebody. So a lot of it is story format.
- 11:26Speaker 3: I'm telling a story of an experience I've had or
- 11:29Speaker 3: something I've learned, or I'm telling a scriptural principle and
- 11:36Speaker 3: easy to read language.
- 11:40Speaker 1: I like that. All of my years working at a library,
- 11:44Speaker 1: I've never heard of a book genre being conversational. I
- 11:50Speaker 1: love that.
- 11:53Speaker 2: But that's my mindset. When I'm writing.
- 11:55Speaker 3: I'm writing to somebody who might not understand something, especially
- 11:59Speaker 3: you know. My stuff is on grace, it's on prayer,
- 12:03Speaker 3: it's on particular principles. One of my favorite books is
- 12:09Speaker 3: Make Yourself at Home in God's Love, and it's that
- 12:15Speaker 3: and that answers the question does God love me? Because
- 12:20Speaker 3: most of us believe that God loves the world, God
- 12:23Speaker 3: loves the church, God loves the old people, and God
- 12:27Speaker 3: loves the children, But we don't have that specific knowledge
- 12:31Speaker 3: that God loves me, that God made me for his
- 12:36Speaker 3: own pleasure, and he loves me the way I am.
- 12:41Speaker 3: He's not gonna leave me the way I am, but
- 12:43Speaker 3: he loves me just the way I am today. And
- 12:47Speaker 3: so that book has again the forty days, so it's
- 12:51Speaker 3: forty days of scripture and encouragement all about the love
- 12:58Speaker 3: of God.
- 13:01Speaker 1: You just blew my mind. This is nothing because I'm sorry,
- 13:05Speaker 1: you're you're absolutely absolutely right, absolutely right, because when I
- 13:10Speaker 1: thought about it, I don't say God loves the world,
- 13:13Speaker 1: God loves the kids, God loves the older individuals, God
- 13:20Speaker 1: loves the church. But you're Raldom. You ran You hardly
- 13:24Speaker 1: hear anybody said God loves me. You did that. You
- 13:30Speaker 1: just blew my mind with that. And I can I
- 13:34Speaker 1: can really count on my fingers how many times I
- 13:37Speaker 1: said God loves me. Wow.
- 13:42Speaker 3: I have had the experience as a pastor to be
- 13:46Speaker 3: preaching and or teaching and to see somebody get it.
- 13:52Speaker 3: And sometimes it's somebody who's young and never heard it before.
- 13:57Speaker 3: But I have seen people who have been in church
- 13:59Speaker 3: there entire lives, and you can tell when they get it.
- 14:04Speaker 3: You see something change on their face, you see nicey
- 14:08Speaker 3: tears run out of their eyes. But it's that that
- 14:11Speaker 3: In that moment, they finally understand that God has specific
- 14:17Speaker 3: pointed love of them and just for them.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Man, you mean that light bulb came on? It is
- 14:25Speaker 1: literally on, Like I can't, I can, I can barely
- 14:29Speaker 1: put on. Wow. God loves you, trees, absolutely.
- 14:36Speaker 3: He has your face engraved on the palm of his hand.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Now that's right out the Bible. I didn't make that up.
- 14:45Speaker 2: He has your face engraved on the palm of his hand.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Okay, see all right, see okayes, get it together, get
- 15:00Speaker 1: it together. Don't you do it? Don't you do it?
- 15:03Speaker 1: Don't you just start crying. I use to start crying.
- 15:10Speaker 1: So this cover I love it. It makes me smile
- 15:19Speaker 1: and it makes me laugh. You guys, here's your chance
- 15:23Speaker 1: to see the cover of her book, thirty one Days
- 15:27Speaker 1: of Grace.
- 15:49Speaker 3: I think it's the joy of knowing God's grace. And again,
- 15:56Speaker 3: we talk about grace, we say it's the unmerited favor
- 15:59Speaker 3: of God, or we lift up grace as something I
- 16:03Speaker 3: have that somebody else doesn't have. But grace again, is
- 16:08Speaker 3: something that God extends to us just because God chooses to.
- 16:15Speaker 3: He's never gonna run out of grace. There's always going
- 16:18Speaker 3: to be enough grace for everybody who chooses to be
- 16:21Speaker 3: a recipient of his grace. And the thing is that
- 16:26Speaker 3: He loves us, and he does not allow us to
- 16:32Speaker 3: suffer the things that we could suffer as a result
- 16:36Speaker 3: of our behavior. He receives us into the family of
- 16:41Speaker 3: God forgiving our sins and clothing us in the righteousness
- 16:46Speaker 3: of Jesus Christ.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Now that's something to celebrate.
- 16:56Speaker 1: What means you want to do the book thirty one days?
- 17:00Speaker 2: Grace principally that.
- 17:04Speaker 3: But let me tell you something about what happened with
- 17:07Speaker 3: the book I had. I had not been writing for
- 17:11Speaker 3: a while, and so grace came to me to be
- 17:16Speaker 3: to begin writing again. And I knew I wanted to
- 17:23Speaker 3: be something with a number. But I listen, I get
- 17:26Speaker 3: all my instructions from the Lord through the Holy Spirit. Okay,
- 17:31Speaker 3: So I started on the book. I wrote every day,
- 17:35Speaker 3: and so at the end of thirty one days, the
- 17:37Speaker 3: book was finished. I am pastor at large at a
- 17:43Speaker 3: church called The Hill in Jessup, Maryland, and the leaders
- 17:49Speaker 3: had a retreat right around the time I was finishing
- 17:52Speaker 3: the book, and one of the presenters, a profit from
- 17:57Speaker 3: DC Bishop band de Cisco, gave a presentation at the retreat,
- 18:04Speaker 3: and she was talking about unique ways of giving and
- 18:10Speaker 3: some incidents that had happened at her church. And while
- 18:14Speaker 3: I was listening to her, it came to me that
- 18:18Speaker 3: this could be a unique way for me to give.
- 18:22Speaker 3: And so when I finished the book, I gave it
- 18:26Speaker 3: to my church as a fundraiser for a huge project
- 18:32Speaker 3: that we have coming up called Project Ephesus. And so
- 18:36Speaker 3: every diamond dollar that comes through this book goes to
- 18:40Speaker 3: the Hill because it's my joy to be a part
- 18:45Speaker 3: of the gracegiving that's going to make Project ephicis happen.
- 18:50Speaker 3: And you know, get the information out anyway, get the
- 18:54Speaker 3: word out anyway. I even had our pastor, who was
- 18:57Speaker 3: Bishop Antoine oh M Clerken right forward for this book.
- 19:02Speaker 3: So this book means a lot to me, and I
- 19:04Speaker 3: hope it means a lot to the future of our church.
- 19:10Speaker 1: So what your readers look forward to when they read
- 19:13Speaker 1: this book.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Little bits of little bits of things. The first thing
- 19:17Speaker 3: you'll see is a scripture about grace, and then you
- 19:22Speaker 3: will see either an inspirational writing. You might see some
- 19:28Speaker 3: quotes from somebody other than myself. Every day is something
- 19:33Speaker 3: different from thirty one for thirty one days.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Okay, so you should really treat this like a journal
- 19:42Speaker 1: for grace.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, okay, I'm.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Loving the I'm loving there.
- 19:49Speaker 3: So if I pick up, if I pick up Day
- 19:51Speaker 3: twenty four, it says grace is for everyone. The thing
- 19:54Speaker 3: I love about grace is that it can never run out.
- 19:58Speaker 3: The thing I love about grace is that it is
- 20:00Speaker 3: multi layered and multi colored. According to Eugene Peterson's interpretation
- 20:05Speaker 3: in the message, his point is that there's no limit
- 20:08Speaker 3: to God's grace, whether you're purple or pink green, or
- 20:12Speaker 3: gray blue or black, or whether you're a child of
- 20:14Speaker 3: the rainbow. There are no boundaries, there are no specifications,
- 20:19Speaker 3: there is no one upon whom God's grace cannot operates.
- 20:32Speaker 1: I really think this is grace is something that we
- 20:35Speaker 1: need right now. Grace, understanding, empathy, love, We need those
- 20:45Speaker 1: things right now because the stuff that's going on in
- 20:48Speaker 1: this world it is bananas, and bananas is really not
- 20:54Speaker 1: the word I can use or would like to use,
- 20:57Speaker 1: but it's the first thing that comes in the mind.
- 20:59Speaker 1: And I think if we are all can take a
- 21:01Speaker 1: moment just to just focus on that, it will make
- 21:05Speaker 1: things just, It'll make it better. Yeah, I won't say
- 21:10Speaker 1: it will solve everything, that it will make it.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Better, because we want grace for ourselves, but we're not
- 21:16Speaker 3: always so fast to give other people the same grace
- 21:21Speaker 3: that we want.
- 21:23Speaker 1: And that's one thing I had to realize as where
- 21:27Speaker 1: I'm working at, a lot of the people that come
- 21:32Speaker 1: in they just need a little bit of grace, a
- 21:36Speaker 1: little bit of patience, and a little bit of understanding.
- 21:39Speaker 1: So sometimes I have to forget what I have going
- 21:43Speaker 1: on and understand that that's what they need. And I've
- 21:49Speaker 1: even helped one lady one time where I work at,
- 21:53Speaker 1: and just helping her made me forget about everything else
- 21:57Speaker 1: I had going on. So you never know how you
- 22:03Speaker 1: show that grace, give that grace, and give that patience
- 22:07Speaker 1: and give that understanding, how.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Would it affect your exactly?
- 22:13Speaker 1: And God got all of it. He's just saying, just
- 22:18Speaker 1: listen to me. I got you. There's a reason why
- 22:20Speaker 1: that word grace is in the bouty and you're giving
- 22:24Speaker 1: us thirty one days to figure So remember offline, I
- 22:34Speaker 1: told you I had some fun questions.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Oh oh you.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Hard right, So here we go.
- 22:45Speaker 4: Here we go your book, Who would you like to
- 22:53Speaker 4: play if your book had a main character and it
- 22:56Speaker 4: was a female and it was a female.
- 22:59Speaker 1: God, I'll spoil artists. Who would you want to be
- 23:04Speaker 1: that female? And why did you choose them?
- 23:09Speaker 2: Yeah? That's a fun one, all right, Yolanda Adams.
- 23:14Speaker 3: Oh, because she sings one of my favorite songs, The
- 23:18Speaker 3: battle is not yours, it's the Lord's.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Okay, I see it, I see it. Yeah. Now it's
- 23:27Speaker 1: a male.
- 23:28Speaker 3: Oh lord, And why it's got me tied Trivia because
- 23:34Speaker 3: he gives me so much energy, just.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Me and my daughter. We love we love it. Oh
- 23:44Speaker 1: my god, we love him. Yeah, my baby, Oh my god,
- 23:48Speaker 1: we loved in this house. Hey, Ti, Tripa, we come
- 23:53Speaker 1: back to Charleston again. We apologize if you missed your
- 23:55Speaker 1: last show, but it was on the school night. Can
- 23:58Speaker 1: you come on a weekend? Please? You can't be coming
- 24:02Speaker 1: on a motive of a week But yes, I love Ti,
- 24:09Speaker 1: I love it, I love it, I love it. We're
- 24:11Speaker 1: gonna take this a step father. We're making your book
- 24:19Speaker 1: into a movie. We want to do a soundtrack that
- 24:24Speaker 1: has a mass choir mm hmm, because Lord knows, I
- 24:29Speaker 1: haven't on this Pandora kick with these mass choirs and
- 24:33Speaker 1: the later remember them days. If you could choose one
- 24:37Speaker 1: mask choir or a conductor.
- 24:44Speaker 3: No, I want the mass choir will Avenue Baptist Church
- 24:47Speaker 3: in Houston, Texas.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Oh, I never heard about Nama people.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Boys, check them out and I got a Baptists in
- 24:57Speaker 3: fact that they're doing the recording this week. That's a
- 24:59Speaker 3: good they are.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Ooh okay, okay, I'm been on this mass choir kick.
- 25:08Speaker 1: I love the song I cannot remember. The church is
- 25:11Speaker 1: right across my house. You got tray and they got
- 25:14Speaker 1: the song called You Fight On. I love that song.
- 25:19Speaker 1: And it's the reason reason why I love the song
- 25:25Speaker 1: because I remember being a church kid when I grew
- 25:29Speaker 1: up all for my grannies. One of my grannies, I
- 25:33Speaker 1: never even went to her church, but when I went
- 25:36Speaker 1: there and her house on the weekend, I have no choice.
- 25:40Speaker 1: You get up, you go to church. And it was
- 25:44Speaker 1: funny because I was saying Easter speeches and I had
- 25:47Speaker 1: to go to two churches to do them. But it's
- 25:51Speaker 1: just something about that footstumping on the floor, that that
- 25:59Speaker 1: cow fell, that oh my god, the hand clapping, the
- 26:05Speaker 1: double clap, that.
- 26:08Speaker 3: The tambourines, Oh what God, Joe.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Actually, I'm sorry Lord, and I'm sorry grannies, but I'm
- 26:19Speaker 1: I'm gonna reveal this what I actually didn't like going
- 26:21Speaker 1: to service during the day. I go to the Usher anniversaries.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Oh my god, they have to come in and they're
- 26:30Speaker 1: doing a little walk, but you can double.
- 26:32Speaker 2: That's right.
- 26:35Speaker 1: I'm sorry, y'all, I just went down. I'm just like,
- 26:40Speaker 1: it's you don't have that nowadays, man, You just you
- 26:45Speaker 1: can't find it nowadays. And notice I said, I love
- 26:50Speaker 1: time tripping, the honor the past in order to see
- 26:55Speaker 1: the future. So and I ain't finished with you yet now, No, ma,
- 27:03Speaker 1: I'm the boweler. No. Lifetime loved the soundtrack, they loved
- 27:10Speaker 1: tie Trivia, and they loved Yolanda and your movie did great. Okay,
- 27:17Speaker 1: now they want to do an autobiography on you. Would
- 27:22Speaker 1: you give the honor of playing you? And why.
- 27:28Speaker 2: Alfred Wooded?
- 27:32Speaker 1: Oh I haven't heard him even loon? And why do
- 27:38Speaker 1: you choose her?
- 27:39Speaker 3: The first time I saw Alfred Woodard, it was before
- 27:43Speaker 3: we had clear DC stations, and so when you wanted
- 27:48Speaker 3: to watch something on Channel twenty, you had to watch
- 27:50Speaker 3: it through so much fog and whatever that stuff was
- 27:54Speaker 3: that you could barely see it.
- 27:56Speaker 2: But one of the first things I saw was Alfred wooded.
- 27:59Speaker 3: Doing the your poem for colored Girls, and she did
- 28:03Speaker 3: the poem somebody took all my stuff and she's she's
- 28:09Speaker 3: been my best actress every since then.
- 28:11Speaker 2: So I would definitely want her to play my partner.
- 28:14Speaker 1: I love it. I love it. See the questions weren't
- 28:19Speaker 1: that bad there?
- 28:23Speaker 2: They weren't.
- 28:25Speaker 1: But before we close out, what would you like to
- 28:27Speaker 1: say to your old readers you're new readers and the
