- 0:00Welcome to Frontline Static, a podcast that helps bridge the
- 0:03gap between healthcare workers and 1st responders and
- 0:05everything in between. Hey Haley, thanks for joining me
- 0:14today. I really appreciate you taking
- 0:16time to be on. I know you're like kind of in
- 0:18between jobs and you have a lot going on right now, so I
- 0:22appreciate you being on today. Yeah, no problem.
- 0:25Let's start out with you just telling everyone a little bit
- 0:28about yourself, a little bit of your background, whatever you'd
- 0:30like to share. Yeah, so I've been a nurse for
- 0:34five years. I've been working in the ER and
- 0:38I've been wanting to get into flight.
- 0:40And so I actually saw Janessa's podcast.
- 0:47That's how I came across her, and then looked her up on
- 0:49Instagram. And then I had already started
- 0:54to apply for some flight jobs and I wasn't really getting
- 0:57anywhere with them. And so I was like, I need to do
- 1:00something different. And so I saw that she was
- 1:03offering some coaching. And so I was like, you know
- 1:05what? I don't normally do something
- 1:07like this or anything, but I'm just going to take that leap of
- 1:11faith. And I signed up and it's been
- 1:15super, super helpful. So I'm actually now
- 1:18transitioning to work part time in flight.
- 1:21I got a job offer and part time in the ICU.
- 1:26Nice at Cardiovascular ICO. Yeah.
- 1:30And what's interesting, you know, about about you and about
- 1:35everybody that I meet is it's always the same thing too.
- 1:39It's always like, I never do this kind of thing, but I was
- 1:41like, I'm going to take a chance on.
- 1:42It. And so let me ask you as far as
- 1:47like coaching, because I'm sure have you had coaching before?
- 1:51I took like a leadership class in college and we did like a
- 1:55little bit of coaching, but this is, this is definitely something
- 1:59very different than what I'm than what I.
- 2:02Do and I wonder this like for you, is it the experience of it
- 2:06and what what we do in it? Is it what you thought it would
- 2:09be? That's kind of it's it's hard
- 2:14to. Heard to quantify that or just
- 2:17say that necessarily a lot of like I feel like what we do is
- 2:21have a conversation and it's not so much you telling me what to
- 2:24do. It's you helping me get to the
- 2:26decision that I kind of already know is right.
- 2:29But I there's some sort of like something hindering me from
- 2:34making that move kind of thing. So it's like a very.
- 2:38It's a very organic thing and I've actually like I look
- 2:42forward to it when we. Do it.
- 2:44So, yeah, me too. I really look forward to working
- 2:47with you as well. And it's just like something
- 2:50about you. If you come in and you want
- 2:53coaching, like you feel coachable, like you just get so
- 2:56much more out of it. Yeah, and.
- 2:58I really think that's what you've taken.
- 3:00Yeah, yeah, I definitely have gained a lot of.
- 3:06Like self-awareness and just like making how it's helped me a
- 3:09lot to make decisions. About stuff, let's talk about
- 3:14you had mentioned there was the point where you were like doing
- 3:18everything to get into flight, but you weren't going anywhere
- 3:21by yourself. So tell me what change for you
- 3:25like adding just that coaching piece of it together?
- 3:29So I think. A big change kind of happened
- 3:33when we talked a lot about mindset and shifting that to,
- 3:38you know, you're just putting in applications to, you know what,
- 3:42like doing something more than that.
- 3:44So we kind of came up with this theme that we're just going to
- 3:47do whatever it takes to get it done.
- 3:50And I just kind of took that into my conversations with these
- 3:55flight companies and you know, we redid my resume.
- 4:01And because I had already kind of thought like, Oh yeah, my
- 4:03resume's good, but then you shared me, shared with me yours.
- 4:08And so I think that really like took it to the next level and
- 4:12then just encouraging me to take my CEN and I feel like that mind
- 4:19shift change of just doing whatever it takes to get it
- 4:22done. Really helped like that.
- 4:24That made stuff happen and from that is how I got my job offer.
- 4:30Yeah, I think what happens is that often, and we've talked
- 4:33about this a little bit too, over the course of our
- 4:34conversations and even today as overachievers like, we think
- 4:38there's so many things that we have to do.
- 4:40Yeah. Like we got to put in this
- 4:42application, we got to fix this, we got to make this perfect.
- 4:45But really like it. It starts with our mindset on
- 4:49it. It starts with our thought that
- 4:50we have like what is that one thought that's going to drive us
- 4:54to continue to take action. Yeah.
- 4:57And when we kind of I pulled out of you what the thoughts were
- 5:02that you really believed this one of do whatever it takes is
- 5:07what kind of drove you to keep doing the next thing.
- 5:11Yeah. Yeah, for sure.
- 5:13And I think just getting to that point where you like, trust
- 5:17yourself, you know, to to get get stuff done is where you
- 5:23really have to be when you're, you know, trying to make career
- 5:27moves or changes and just being willing to be uncomfortable.
- 5:32And I think that that helped me a lot like.
- 5:36That decision that it's like I'm not just going to like put in
- 5:39applications and hope that something happens Like I'm going
- 5:42to be actively chasing after these companies.
- 5:46Like you know, I I got phone numbers and e-mail addresses
- 5:51from a bunch of different places and I just talked to whoever I
- 5:55could talk to that would you know, that would take my call or
- 6:00e-mail me back kind of thing and I think.
- 6:03Through that, that was the kind of stuff where, you know, like a
- 6:07lot of companies, they'll look at that and they'll be like,
- 6:09wow, this girl, she really wants it.
- 6:12And I think that that really reflected and you know, that
- 6:16goes hand in hand when you're just, I'm just going to do
- 6:19whatever it takes. I'm going to make that phone
- 6:21call, even if it's. Awkward, because we were at that
- 6:25point, right? Where I I I think I just came
- 6:27out to you. I don't know how many sessions
- 6:29we're in, but I'm like Haley. We've done all these things and
- 6:34you're like, I'm feeling a little down.
- 6:36Yeah. You know, like I've done
- 6:37everything that I can. And I said, like, we what right
- 6:40now we need to, like just put aside applications.
- 6:44We need to just talk about, like, how are you feeling about
- 6:46this? Like where do you want to be And
- 6:48you're feeling about it. And that's when things really
- 6:50changed for you. Yeah, yeah, I.
- 6:53Thought not for you. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:55I had gotten a like a rejection letter or something.
- 6:58And so I was feeling like a little bit down in the dumps
- 7:01about it. And so that's when we had that
- 7:04conversation. We had decided like we're just
- 7:07going to, we're going to go all in, we're just going to do
- 7:09whatever it takes. And yeah, that's definitely when
- 7:12that shifted and yeah, and stuff came, came, you know, it it
- 7:20became something from that so. And something really poignant
- 7:24that we talked about today on our session too was that you
- 7:29didn't realize. And I think this is what stops a
- 7:32lot of people from getting into flight or not even just getting
- 7:35into flight, but going to that next step that they want to get
- 7:39to is they start to feel comfortable and where they're at
- 7:42and. You.
- 7:44Mentioned something like I thought it was always going to
- 7:46be an ER nurse. So it looks like a little bit
- 7:48about that because I think that everybody can relate to that
- 7:52thought that you're having, especially people who have been
- 7:54doing it for so long. It's hard to take that next
- 7:57step. Yeah, for sure.
- 7:59So in nursing school, I decided that I wanted to work in the ER
- 8:03and I was like super pumped about it.
- 8:07I like, lived and breathed. The ERI worked as a tech in
- 8:11nursing school in the ER and then they hired me on.
- 8:16And I loved it. Like, I thought I was going to
- 8:19be an ER nurse for the next my whole career, honestly.
- 8:24And then a couple years in, I learned about flight nursing.
- 8:27And I thought, oh, that's pretty cool.
- 8:29But there's like a requirement you have to have three years of
- 8:31critical care experience. And I think I was around like
- 8:34year two when that happened. And so I was like, oh, this is,
- 8:39you know, this is kind of fun or whatever.
- 8:42I think I'd be interested in doing that, but you know, I'm
- 8:45not qualified yet, so I'll revisit it, you know, later on
- 8:49or whatever. And then I ended up moving and
- 8:53I. Did myself a disservice, I
- 8:57thought to myself, you know, it would be kind of cool to try
- 9:00something new, like to go work in the ICU.
- 9:03Or I could have applied at the time.
- 9:05I could have applied for a flight job.
- 9:07But I kind of doubted myself a little bit.
- 9:09And I thought, like, well, what if I'm not really as good a
- 9:11nurse as I thought I was? And maybe, you know, I just
- 9:15happened to be really good in this, ER that I worked in
- 9:17before. And so I.
- 9:21I applied for another ER job, got the job.
- 9:24And don't get me wrong, I did well.
- 9:27I moved up in management. I was the charge nurse.
- 9:29I was the CNC for our unit. You know, I I was doing good,
- 9:35but I wasn't reaching my full potential.
- 9:38And so then I just kind of got kind of got tired and so I was
- 9:44like, you know what I needed? I need to make some moves.
- 9:47I need to do something. So that's when I decided to
- 9:51transition into flight. And so I had put in some
- 9:56applications, didn't really get anywhere.
- 9:58And then that's where Janessa and I hooked up.
- 10:01And then it it really, yeah, it it really changed from from
- 10:08there. And then I recently made the
- 10:11decision to like change and move over to the ICU.
- 10:15Part time just to kind of help me with like learning devices
- 10:20and ECMO different stuff that you just don't get it exposure
- 10:24to in the ER and it was really hard to leave the ER.
- 10:29There was definitely some tears and there was definitely like a
- 10:32grieving process because it had some.
- 10:34It had been something that I thought that was going to be
- 10:37there forever, but. That's, you know, it just wasn't
- 10:41the case. I was ready to move on to bigger
- 10:44and better things and so it was hard, but I'm so happy that I
- 10:50did it because you know, I I needed to move on.
- 10:55Yeah, and I think that happens a lot.
- 10:57Like, I think we see a lot of people in this career that end
- 11:00up staying wherever they are because they are.
- 11:02Comfortable, Yeah. Yeah.
- 11:04It it was it. It it's super hard to leave
- 11:08where you're. You know, where you feel like
- 11:10you're the expert in that area and that's that's where I was,
- 11:13You know, I I was feeling good. I was the resource person for
- 11:17everyone. It felt, you know, it felt good.
- 11:20But I needed to challenge myself and I needed to expand my
- 11:23knowledge and I needed to grow. And these were the things that,
- 11:28you know, I needed to take that leap of faith and go into, for
- 11:33me, uncharted territories or waters or whatever.
- 11:37Yeah, and. And what was the difference like
- 11:43for you that you said, like, you know, when people are
- 11:46comfortable being in that area and doing it for so long?
- 11:50Like, what was it for you that was like, because of course,
- 11:54none of us want to be uncomfortable.
- 11:55Yeah, right. So what was it for you that was
- 11:58like, no, I need to do this. I think for me, like I've always
- 12:03been kind of like a high achiever.
- 12:05In life and even like in high school and college, like, I
- 12:09always like, moved on to the next thing.
- 12:11But kind of in my nursing career, I kind of gotten
- 12:15comfortable with just being in one area.
- 12:18And so in a way, like through through coaching, that helped me
- 12:24kind of relapse back on to who I actually am as a person and
- 12:30expand my knowledge and grow because.
- 12:34I had just become so comfortable where I was and I feel like I'd
- 12:39let myself like over the last like year to become complacent
- 12:43with where I was. And from that, you know, in that
- 12:47place you just kind of grow bitter and you grow tired and
- 12:51you lose your passion. And I think that's kind of where
- 12:54I was at was. I wasn't feeling passionate
- 12:57about what I was doing. I wasn't feeling excited about
- 13:00it. In fact, I got to the point
- 13:02where I was honestly dreading going to work.
- 13:04And that's a that's a that's a far place from being, you know,
- 13:08five years ago where I was like, I loved the ER, like I was so
- 13:14excited to go to work every, you know, every week.
- 13:18And so I I feel like. Kind of making making that move
- 13:24to like okay. I'm I'm growing I'm doing the
- 13:26next thing really helped reignite that passion that I
- 13:29have for nursing and for just adventuring and you know and
- 13:34that's kind of what moving on to like doing new things is, is
- 13:38you're you're entering a new adventure.
- 13:40Yeah. How do you think coaching
- 13:42helped? You come to that?
- 13:43Because I I do think a lot of people think as far as like the
- 13:46flight part, like I don't just coach people who want to get
- 13:48into flight, but obviously that's what you came to me for.
- 13:51But I think people think, oh, I'm just going to give them
- 13:53advice and I'm just going to tell them what to do.
- 13:56But that's nothing what I do. I don't give any advice or.
- 13:59So how did that piece of coaching really help you come to
- 14:02that knowledge of yourself? I think it helped me trust
- 14:05myself. I've kind of gotten to the point
- 14:08where I, like, doubted myself a little bit and I just wasn't
- 14:11willing to, you know, take that leap of faith and it wasn't so
- 14:16much that you like. Told me, yeah, you like.
- 14:20You didn't tell me what to do. It was you gave me the
- 14:23confidence to trust myself, that I knew what was best for myself
- 14:29and I was willing to take that leap of faith.
- 14:34So I think that was the big thing, is that you just helped
- 14:37me get to the point where. You know, I was.
- 14:41I was willing to to trust myself.
- 14:43Yeah, yeah. And now we're at the point to
- 14:45where, you know, what I want to offer to you is when you start
- 14:49to feel those moments of doubt, like again, like you did when we
- 14:52first started working together, to trust yourself and go back on
- 14:55now this piece of evidence that you have that it does work for
- 14:58you. Yeah, yeah, I yeah, super,
- 15:01super, super helpful. I want to talk about 1 area in
- 15:05the application process because I I've seen this with every
- 15:08single client that I've coached into flight is that they all
- 15:13come to me and I've talked about this in some other interviews
- 15:16and they all say this is my one 2-3 and four of what I want for
- 15:19a flight company and almost 100% of the time it's not their
- 15:25number one choice. So kind of tell me like.
- 15:28And and you know, a lot of the thoughts too are like, well,
- 15:31should I even put an application in for this company?
- 15:34Because it's not really on my radar or I don't know what I
- 15:37think about it. And I always coach people that,
- 15:40hey, let's just put as many as we can in so we can get as much
- 15:43experience and get as many offers put out there for us as
- 15:46we can. So what was your experience with
- 15:48that part of it? Because I knew when we talked
- 15:51about there's a little bit of resistance.
- 15:53Yeah, yeah, no, for sure. So I applied for three different
- 15:58flight companies and I ended up getting rejected from my #1,
- 16:04which was a little sad. And then my number two, they
- 16:10they honestly didn't really even contact me back.
- 16:14And so my #3 that I actually. So I applied for multiple bases
- 16:19within that one company. And they I was like kind of
- 16:26hesitant at all, like I went to the interview, the first
- 16:29interview I was like, I don't know if I like this, but I was
- 16:34like, you know, I'm going to go back for the second part, like
- 16:36obviously I'm not going to not going to do that.
- 16:40So I went back and then they ended up offering me the job and
- 16:45through working with them over the past like you know.
- 16:49Six weeks, 8 weeks. They have been incredibly
- 16:54supportive and just very helpful in navigating the first, you
- 16:58know, couple months of getting into flight because there's a
- 17:02lot of things that have to happen before you even get to
- 17:05fly. And so they've just been really
- 17:07helpful at getting those things done.
- 17:11And yeah, I've I've been super, super.
- 17:16Happy with them and it's just kind of funny because they were
- 17:19my third option. But I'm I'm so glad that I went
- 17:22with them because they, yeah, they have been really helpful
- 17:29and just very, you know, on on my side, on my team, like
- 17:34they've really been pushing me, but also just.
- 17:39Supportive of what I want to do and how I want to do it.
- 17:42And, you know, willing to work with me and my schedule to get
- 17:47it done, yeah. And what do you think like
- 17:49coaching has done for you? Because I know there was a lot
- 17:51of different little tiny decisions that you had to make
- 17:54throughout the whole process of applications, throughout
- 17:56acceptance, even to now you know, deciding whether you're
- 18:00going to stay PRN part time with your current job, all of that.
- 18:04How is coaching really kind of helped you make some of those
- 18:06decisions or? In that way of like just getting
- 18:11clarity for you. Yeah, I think the biggest thing
- 18:15with coaching is that again, like, it's just helped me trust
- 18:20myself to make the right decisions And it.
- 18:25Yeah. And it's not even like, oh,
- 18:26you're telling me what to do because I'm sure you have
- 18:30amazing advice because you've been in that, you know place
- 18:34before. But.
- 18:37It's just like giving me the will, like the the confidence to
- 18:43make those decisions because I think a lot of times like same,
- 18:47you know, same with like coaching and therapy.
- 18:50It's not necessarily like, oh, they'll give you advice.
- 18:53It's like you already know what you want.
- 18:57It's just how much you trust yourself.
- 19:00To get what you want. And so I think that's been the
- 19:04biggest thing with coaching that's helped me is it's like I
- 19:06already knew what decisions I needed to make.
- 19:08I just needed to trust myself to make those decisions, take those
- 19:12leaps of faith to, you know, stretch, stretch myself.
- 19:18And so that's that's what I would say has been the the most
- 19:22helpful thing And yeah, and. This is not normally something
- 19:27that I ever would do, but I was just really in a place where I
- 19:31was like I need something more to help me because I'm feeling
- 19:35like I'm going backwards. And so I'm yeah, I'm so thankful
- 19:40because it it really has helped a lot.
- 19:42And you definitely have put in the work too, like something
- 19:45that you had mentioned before. Maybe our previous session was
- 19:48like, I don't feel overwhelmed and stressed, like, is there
- 19:51something wrong with that? Because everybody's telling me I
- 19:55should, but I think that's just a testament to you trusting
- 19:59yourself. Yeah, yeah, I think, you know,
- 20:03I. I'm trusting myself and I have
- 20:05already put in like all the hard work I've gotten, all of my
- 20:09certifications. I like to start flight.
- 20:11I only needed 11 certification that I didn't have, and you need
- 20:16like 8 certifications to fly. Like I'd already done all that
- 20:20stuff. I'd taken my CEN like like I'd
- 20:25put in the hard work. I just needed to promote myself
- 20:29and I needed to kind of show off.
- 20:32To these flight companies, who I was and what I was, so and for
- 20:38your coaching, I feel like that's that's what really
- 20:41helped. Yeah.
- 20:43What is like? I kind of want to wrap it up
- 20:46with like 3 different questions for you.
- 20:48But what's like one piece of advice that you got maybe even
- 20:53early on in your career that's kind of really helped carry you
- 20:57to this point of success in nursing of where you are now?
- 21:01Yeah. So it's kind of funny I get
- 21:07asked this because, you know, I do like precept people a lot at
- 21:12work and often times like nurses will ask me that, like how do I,
- 21:18how do I become like you? How do I get so much knowledge
- 21:20or whatever? And I think the biggest advice
- 21:24that I I tell people is. Seek out educational
- 21:29opportunities because they will always be there.
- 21:31Hospitals work so hard, like they want to retain staff, they
- 21:36want to keep their staff and like they want to move them up
- 21:39the ranks. You know that they want to that.
- 21:42So if you want to learn stuff, they will teach you.
- 21:46I think the other thing is just like going to work with the
- 21:50mindset that it's like, I'm going to learn something new
- 21:52today. I'm going to do something I've
- 21:54never done before and then just. Putting yourself in those
- 21:58situations, like, you know, it's may not be the case at like it
- 22:03inpatient units, but certainly in the ER if you want to be in
- 22:07those trauma rooms, we'll get all your stuff done and your
- 22:10your patients and then when a trauma comes in, put yourself in
- 22:14there. You know, tell that lead nurse
- 22:16like, hey, what can I do to help.
- 22:17And even if it's like not an important role, you're still
- 22:21providing yourself the opportunity to watch and learn
- 22:24because a lot of. How you learn in the emergency
- 22:28room or just as a nurse is you see it.
- 22:32So and that's how you retain knowledge is also it's you're
- 22:35like, Oh yeah, I remember that one time I I had this patient or
- 22:39there was this patient and this happened.
- 22:43So yeah, just immersing yourself in whatever you can get your
- 22:46hands in, like go to work with the mindset that I'm going to
- 22:49work for 12 hours, I'm going to work hard and I'm going to see
- 22:52as much as I can do. Yeah, yeah.
- 22:55And then my last question that I have for you is, you know, you
- 23:01see it so eloquently now because it's taken, you know, time and
- 23:05now you're over that hump. You know what it's like to trust
- 23:08yourself, but you also know what it's like to stand at the end of
- 23:12that high dive and be scared to take the job.
- 23:15So what would you say to the person that's like off the end
- 23:19of that high dive, scared to take the jump, knows that they
- 23:22got it to get to the next thing for themselves, and knows that
- 23:25they have to trust themselves? What is it that you say to that
- 23:29person? I think my advice for somebody
- 23:36in that place would just be like, just take that leap of
- 23:40faith like it's going to be scary.
- 23:43It's going to be hard. It's going to be terrifying,
- 23:47maybe, but just do it because you will look back, you know,
- 23:53six months from now and you will thank yourself for doing it.
- 23:56Never view being uncomfortable as a bad thing.
- 24:00Like being uncomfortable means that you are learning and that
- 24:03you are growing, and growing is a good thing.
- 24:07It may not be fun, but it's a good thing because it's going to
- 24:10get you where you want to go. So just just do it.
- 24:14Yeah, just just do it. And an exercise that we did and
- 24:17I think was really pivotal for you too.
- 24:19And you can tell me if it was different, but we talked about
- 24:23you already in that flight suit. Yeah.
- 24:27And she, you know, especially in your difficult time where you
- 24:30were like, I've done everything. I put in the applications, I
- 24:33keep hitting this wall with them.
- 24:35And I said, I said, Haley, let's think about the you who's
- 24:39already there. You bought your flight suit.
- 24:42You're ready to go. What is she saying to you about
- 24:45this moment? I think that that was really
- 24:48helpful for you then to make your decision from that.
- 24:51Yeah, yeah. That definitely, like drove me
- 24:54because it was like I'm somebody who like once I like, say
- 24:59something, or once I decide like I'm going to do it, like I do
- 25:02it. And it doesn't matter if I'm
- 25:04going to, like, scrape my way or I'm going to, you know, fight to
- 25:08get there, like I'm going to do it.
- 25:09And so I think that helped me a lot because it was like, it's
- 25:13going to happen. Like I've already envisioned it.
- 25:15It's going to happen. And so I just had to put in the
- 25:18work. To do it.
- 25:20Yeah, I love that. Well, thank you for being on,
- 25:24Haley. Is there anything else that we
- 25:25didn't cover that you want to say or that you want to add at
- 25:30the end of this or you feel like we pretty much summed it up?
- 25:33Yeah, I think, I think the biggest thing that I could
- 25:37offer, like advice wise to people was just just trust in
- 25:41yourself. I think a lot of times we just
- 25:43have so much selfdoubt about ourselves and it's not because
- 25:48you know that's who we are. It's just like that's where
- 25:51we've gotten. So just just trust yourself
- 25:55because I promise like it's going to be worth it.
- 25:58And you, you already know the answers, you just.
- 26:02You just have to trust yourself. Yeah, I love that.
- 26:04And I appreciate you trusting me, like reaching out to me and
- 26:09trusting me to help you, you know, go through this process.
- 26:12Because that is what it's about for me is showing other people
- 26:16like, really what they already have in them and that they're
- 26:19capable to get to every single thing that they want to.
- 26:22And that's what coaching is about for me.
- 26:25Yeah. So I look forward to helping you
- 26:28maintain this level of trust and like get you new to the next
- 26:31level of getting into flight. So I'm happy we're going to
- 26:34continue to work together, but I really appreciate you being on
- 26:37today and taking the time to have this discussion about it.
- 26:41For sure, Yeah. Thank you.
- 26:43Okay bye. Bye.
- 26:56I'm a.
