- 0:08The Book of Ruth begins in dark days,
- 0:11but even in the darkness, God was at work.
- 0:14Through loss, uncertainty, and unexpected turns,
- 0:18we discover a beautiful story of grace,
- 0:21redemption, and hope. Join Scott Pauley for this new
- 0:25study, The Gospel According to Ruth. Light for Dark
- 0:38Ruth was my great-grandmother's name, and it's a great
- 0:42Bible name. She was married to a man named Charles
- 0:46Spurgeon Riggs. That's a pretty, pretty strong name as well.
- 0:50But Ruth has always meant something to me because of
- 0:54my family heritage and their godly testimony and
- 0:58legacy left behind. But the Ruth of the Bible is
- 1:02in so many ways, I think, representative of every one of us.
- 1:07Ruth is all of us— poor, needy,
- 1:11desperate, unworthy,
- 1:13seeking. And the only thing that, that makes Orpah
- 1:18and Ruth different is that Orpah chose to stay in Moab
- 1:22and Ruth believed God had more for her.
- 1:25Orpah was content to just live her life and make
- 1:29the best of it and hope things turned out better, but Ruth believed
- 1:34by faith that God had something for her life.
- 1:39We come today in our study of this amazing little book,
- 1:42The Gospel According to Ruth, to Ruth chapter number
- 1:462. Now we've been living in chapter 1 for a while, and we've seen
- 1:49the famine and, and the darkness of this season and the
- 1:53destruction that sin brought into a family. At the end of
- 1:56chapter 1, we saw the, the moment of truth as both Ruth
- 2:01and Naomi declare again their faith
- 2:04and, and come in, in humility
- 2:08to Bethlehem, Judah— broken, empty, needy people And
- 2:12now we pick up the story in Ruth chapter 2 and verse number
- 2:161, and it's so wonderful because now we come really to the main character of
- 2:19the story. You see, Ruth is actually not the main character.
- 2:24The main character of the story is Boaz,
- 2:27because Boaz is the one through whom Ruth
- 2:31is going to find all the blessing that she needs and is
- 2:34going to become a part of a larger work of redemption that
- 2:38God is doing in this world. So we come to chapter 2,
- 2:41verse 1. And Naomi had a kinsman of her
- 2:45husband's, a mighty man of wealth,
- 2:50of the family of Elimelech, and his name was
- 2:54Boaz. That— there he is,
- 2:57Boaz. And Ruth the Moabitess said
- 3:01unto Naomi, let me now go to the field and glean ears of corn after
- 3:04him in whose sight I shall find grace.
- 3:08And she said unto her, go, my daughter. And she went and came and gleaned
- 3:12in the field after the reapers. I love this expression.
- 3:15And her hap was to light on a part of the field
- 3:19belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech. Think about
- 3:23this. Of all the fields in Bethlehem, you know what this is? This is
- 3:27the providence of Almighty God. Isn't this wonderful?
- 3:31In fact, if you come down in the same chapter to verse number 20,
- 3:35Naomi says later, blessed be he of the
- 3:39Lord who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead.
- 3:43In other words, God did this. This was not Ruth scheming.
- 3:47This was not Naomi using contacts. This was not Boaz
- 3:52making it happen. This was God.
- 3:55Salvation is always of the Lord. Every good thing
- 3:59in our lives is because of our great God.
- 4:03And so what seemed like happenstance, what seemed
- 4:08circumstantial, was really providential. Verse 4: And behold,
- 4:12Boaz came from Bethlehem and said unto the reapers, the Lord
- 4:15be with you. And they answered him, the Lord bless
- 4:19thee. I like that. Boaz— may I
- 4:23just pause and interject— this is a picture of our Lord
- 4:27Jesus Christ. He is a type, if you will,
- 4:31a symbolic person in the Old Testament of the Redeemer,
- 4:36of the Messiah. He is not the Messiah.
- 4:39He is a man like us, but he is
- 4:44going to be, as the story continues, representative of the Redeemer
- 4:48to come. And I see in this a beautiful picture of the blessing that the
- 4:52Redeemer gives and the praise that then comes back to him.
- 4:56Oh, can you hear the Lord Jesus Christ look at sinners and
- 5:00servants like us and say, the Lord be with you,
- 5:03and we should respond, the Lord bless thee? In other words,
- 5:07God has been so good to us and given us his presence, we should bless
- 5:10the Lord and we should give him praise and worship and thanks.
- 5:15Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers,
- 5:18whose damsel is this? And the servant that was set over the reapers
- 5:23answered and said, it is the Moabitish damsel that came
- 5:26back with Naomi out of the country of Moab.
- 5:30And she said, I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among
- 5:34the sheaves. So she came and hath continued even unto the morning,
- 5:37from the morning until now, that she tarried a little in the house. Then said
- 5:41Boaz unto Ruth, hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean
- 5:45in another field, neither go from hence, but abide
- 5:49here fast by my maidens. In other words, stay close.
- 5:54Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go
- 5:58thou after them. Have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch
- 6:01thee? And when thou art athirst, go into the vessels and drink of
- 6:04that which the young men have drawn. Then she fell on her face
- 6:09and bowed herself to the ground and said unto him,
- 6:12why have I found grace in thine eyes that
- 6:16thou shouldest take knowledge of me?
- 6:19Seeing I am a stranger. Now, he was certainly fulfilling
- 6:24the, the law of the day, a law of civility,
- 6:28a law of hospitality, to care for orphans
- 6:32and widows, to care for strangers, to care for the poor.
- 6:35They were allowed to come and, and to pick up the leftovers and
- 6:39all of that. I love this. Before it's done, she's not going to be getting
- 6:43the leftovers. She's going to be getting the first fruits. When you get the Lord's
- 6:46will, the Lord's way, you always get more than you ever imagined.
- 6:50But this is an amazing story. It is more than just him doing his
- 6:54duty. He begins to delight in her. He is giving
- 6:57to her not out of law but out of love.
- 7:02The story of Ruth and the Lord is really the story of
- 7:06a man in the middle. Can we call him this?
- 7:09God's middleman. That was Boaz.
- 7:12Boaz was God's middleman. He was the man between
- 7:16Jehovah God and this poor Moabitess woman that
- 7:20was the means by which the two came together,
- 7:24the means by which Ruth came to know Jehovah God and
- 7:28all of his blessing, the means by which God's eternal purpose was
- 7:32accomplished in and through Ruth. That was through Boaz,
- 7:35God's middleman. The goal of
- 7:39this study is not to know Boaz better, it's to love Jesus more. Let me
- 7:43tell you who our Lord Jesus Christ is. He is God's
- 7:47middleman. He is the God-man, the one in
- 7:50the middle through whom all of God's goodness comes to us and
- 7:55by which we are brought into all that God has for
- 7:58our life. 1 Timothy chapter 2 tells us
- 8:02there is one God And one mediator between
- 8:06God and men, the man Christ Jesus. Can I tell
- 8:10you about the man? I hear people say sometimes, uh,
- 8:13he's the man, and they mean by that he's accomplished something,
- 8:17he's arrived at something. But friend, there's nobody like the God-man,
- 8:21nobody like the Lord Jesus Christ. He is always in
- 8:25the middle, in the midst. Read the, the gospel records, you'll find Christ
- 8:29in the midst. Throughout his ministry. In the midst of the
- 8:33storm, Christ was there. In the midst of the multitudes, Christ was there. In the
- 8:37midst of the need, Christ was there. When he died, where did he die?
- 8:40On the cross in the middle, reaching to sinners,
- 8:45suspended there between God and man. And now where
- 8:48is he? He's, he's in the middle. He's right in the middle of the
- 8:53throne in heaven interceding for us. He's our go-between.
- 8:56He is the one who holds back hell and brings all of
- 9:00heaven. He is the one who brings us into
- 9:03all that God has for us. He's God's middleman. We'll return to Ruth
- 9:07chapter 2, get better acquainted not just with Boaz but
- 9:10with Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ,
- 9:13because we all need to know God's middleman.
- 9:17It is through him that we come into all that God has
- 9:22for us.
